JAMES MENDENHALL COFFIN was born Oct. 8, 1824, in Salem, Ohio, and died at his home in Leon on Friday evening, Oct. 11, 1901.

MR. COFFIN was one of the pioneer business men of Leon, having been engaged in the photograph business as early as 1858. He was of Quaker parentage and came to Iowa at an early date, settling in the estern part of the State, and came to Leon in 1857. He was twice married and was the father of twelve children. His second wife was MARY E. ELLIS, who died June 24, 1900. Six of his children survive him: EDWARD, FRANK, VIN and OLLIE, who reside in Leon; WILLIAM, of Wymore, Neb., and CYRUS, of Starbuck, Wash.

On Wednesday of last week, MR. COFFIN was stricken with paralysis from which he never rallied. The funeral was held from the home on Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Elder Castor, of the Christian Church, interment being in the Leon Cemetery.
