Leon, Decatur County, Iowa
Alice Viola Chastain, age 89 of Leon, Iowa, daughter of George Castle and Carrie Ann (Smith) Redman, was born March 16, 1914 near Van Wert, Iowa and died March 21, 2003 at Westview Acres in Leon.
Viola graduated from Leon High School. She married Ware Chastain December 12, 1936 in Bethany, MO. To this union four children were born: Brenda Lou, Robert Rane, Linda Sue, and Cynthia Lynn.
The family lived in rural Leon, where Viola was an active farmwife and mother. She raised chickens, gardened and canned. She willingly chauffeured her children to and from many school activities and sports and loved watching them participate.
Viola was very competitive in both Ladies' Gold League and Ladies' Bowling League. She bowled with her sisters Peg and Louise. Viola and Ware enjoyed playing cribbage and pitch, gardening together, and traveling. Viola also liked to play scrabble. In earlier years, she was active in the White Hall Community Neigborhood Club. Viola was baptized into the Van Wert Methodist Church, later becoming a member of the Loving Chapel United Methodist Church in Leon.
Viola loved "her Ware" and was a very devoted wife for 61 years. Described by her children as the "best mom ever", Viola was loving and supportive.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Ware on December 26, 1997; brother Harry Redman; sister Margaret Watson; and infant sister Hazel Redman.
Viola is survived by her children: Brenda (Maurice) Fulton, Bob (Kathy) Chastain; Linda (Bill) Chastain; and Cindy (Roy) Havens all of Leon; 10 grandchildren: Shelle (Mike) Mosher, Scott (Rhonda) Fulton, Vallie Chastain, Daniel (Amy) Chastain, Luke Chastain, Cayle Chastain, Callie Chastain, Angie Ricono, Nick (Jill) Ricono and Kate Havens and 9 great-grandchildren; sister Louise Perry of Van Wert, brothers Jack (Irene) Redman of Osceola, and Jimmie (Betty) Redman of Van Wert; sister-in-law Forence Redman of Mitchelville, and aother relatives and friends.
