John Calvin Akes


John Calvin Akes, son of Henry Donathon Akes and Lizzie Mae (Bullard) Akes, was born September 2, 1908 in Decatur County, Iowa and died February 24, 1993 at the Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa at the age of 84 years, 5 months and 22 days.

He attended Washington Country School west of Leon, Iowa.

He was united in marriage to Emma Pauline Deemer on December 2, 1933. To this union were born two children, Susie May and Henry Calvin.

John enjoyed fishing, driving his car and eating at the Diary Queen.

Preceding him in death were his parents, wife Pauline, on November 11, 1981; daughter Susie Mae Wilson on November 29, 1992; son Calvan Akes on November 29, 1980; brother Stephen Akes, June 1971; grandson Richard Wilson February 1973; and great granddaughter Jamie Lewis.

Survivors include son-in-law Bill Wilson, Henderson, CO; six grandchildren Donna Frost and husband Kevin of Leon; Billie Sue Lewis of Commerce City, CO; Shirley Blakely and husband Daniel of Thorton, CO; John Wilson and wife Kathy of Commerce City, CO; Robert Wilson and wife Wanda of Wyoming, IA; Karen Wilson of Henderson, CO; twelve great grandchildren. Angie Frost; Daniel, James and Cindy Blakely; Jason and Joshua Lewis; Jeremy, Steven, Amanda, Travis, Ashley and Jenefer Wilson. Two sisters Gladys Eastin and husband Oscar of Leon; Sarah Butcher of Dubuque, IA; and two brothers (his twin) Bill and Harley both of Leon.

Graveside services were held at 2:00 PM Saturday February 27, 1993 at the Leon cemetery with the Rev. Max Carmicheal officiating.

The Slade-O'Donnell Funeral Home were in charge.
