Subject: OBITUARY - MABEL ALLEN.
Date: Monday, August 06, 2001 8:30 PM

Decatur County Journal
August 6, l903

MABEL, daughter of MR. and MRS. A. E. ALLEN, was born near Pleasanton,
Iowa, August, 22, l883, where she lived until eleven years ago when she
moved with her parents to Weldon, Iowa, where they lived four years.
They then moved to Stansberry, Mo., where they resided four years,
moving back to Weldon last February, where she died July 28, l903.
MABEL attended the high school at Stansberry and would have graduated in
a few weeks had she remained.

She was a consistent Christian, a member of the M.E. Church, attending
all its services until the last Sabbath of her life. She had not missed
Sabbath school for two and a half years until last Sabbath. When the
church bell rang she said: "I will have to break my record today." She
was a bright, loving Christian and the sweet influence of her daily life
will remain with many in the years to come. She was sick only a few
days but she seemed to wither like a lily in the sun. Everything was
done that could be to prolong the sweet life so dear to all but in
vain. JAMES G. GARFIELD, to whom she was to have been married, was with
her through all her short sickness, helping her parents to care for
her. Her sister, MRS. KELLEY, came the day before she died, after whose
coming she sank rapidly.

The funeral services were conducted by her Pastor, Rev. W.H. Doyle, at
the M.E. Church in Weldon, after which they drove to Leon where the dear
body was laid to rest by her dearest friend. Her uncle, JAMES
GRANDSTAFF, of Leon, took charge of the funeral and six of her girl
friends bore the casket to the grave. A large concourse of people were
present. Among those from abroad were: F. OTIS GRANDSTAFF, Burlington;
MR. and MRS. JOHN KELLEY, Carcondale, Ill.; MISS DAISY HOUSTON, MISS
BIRDIE BESSINGER and MRS. C.A. RATCLIFF, Stansberry, Mo.; MRS. DR. E.C.
MACY, DR. and MRS. O.E. MACY, MISS ELIZA WILLIS, Pleasanton, and a great
number from Leon.
In peace she lived,
In peace she died;
Her life was asked,
But God denied.

ONE WHO LOVED HER.
