Decatur County Journal
November ll, l897
HENRY HARRISON AKES was born in Kentucky, August 28, l8l2, and died
October 26, l897, being 85 years, l month and 28 days of age at the time
of his death.
At the age of l0 years he removed with his parents to Macoupin County,
Ill. In l835 his father died, leaving him to care for the family, he
being then about 23 years old. They remained in Illinois until l836 and
then moved to Jefferson County, Iowa, where they remained until l840 and
then went to Gentry County, Mo. He was married in l84l to MISS EMILY
SEGO. To them were born nine children, six of whom survive him. His
wife died December l6, l877.
He lived with his children in Missouri until about l887, when he came to
Decatur County, where he made his home with his nephew, W.P. AKES, up to
the time of his death. It seems that hard work had always been his lot.
He united with the Christian Church when he was about 30 years of age
and has lived a devoted Christian ever since. His life and death are a
sublime triumph of Christianity. He, like Paul, desired to be with the
Lord, yet he could only say, "not my will but thine be done".
His death being sudden and enexpected, only one of his children, H.H.
AKES, JR., was permitted to be present. The funeral services were held
at the Palestine Church on Wednesday, conducted by H.A. BENNETT, and the
remains were laid in the Palestine Cemetery.
