Decatur County Journal
April l8, l90l
JOSHUA ADAMS was born in Indiana, February l8, l8l9 and died at his
home
near Westerville, Iowa, April 6, l90l, aged 82 years, l month and l7
days, the cause of his death being heart trouble. January l5th he
visited his son, ALONZO and family and was not able to be out of the
house but a few times after returning home. He bore his sufferings
with
great patience. During all the long weeks he was never known to murmur
or complain.
He was united in marriage to TEMPA C. SMITH in Lee County, Virginia,
in
l84l, who preceded him to the spirit land April 24, l893. To this union
nine children were born. Five still survive him, and all reside in
this
county. They are as follows: JAMES, of Grand River; JOSEPH, of
Decatur; REBECCA, wife of JOHN VANDERPOOL, of Westerville; MARY E.
LEE,
a widow who resided with her father on the old homestead, and ALONZO,
of
Van Wert. Besides these children, twenty-three grandchildren and ten
great grandchildren are left to mourn the loss of a devoted parent
and
grandparent. They moved from Virginia to Tennessee in a short time
after their marriage and from thence to the state of Iowa in l85l,
first
settling in Davis County, in a short time moving from there to the
western part of the state and in the year l867, moved to Decatur County,
purchasing his present home of Rev. F. Edwards. There being no
improvements but the house, he and his good wife went to work to make
a
comfortable home. They endured a great many of the cares and hardships
of pioneer life, but by industry, honesty and economy they gained a
pleasant, commodious home. But seven of the early settlers of his
neighborhood survive him.
UNCLE JOSHUA, as he was familiarly called, united with the Baptist
Church in his early manhood, and through all the sorrows and troubles,
as well as sunshine, he lived a devoted Christian life. His funeral
was
held at the Christian Church, April 8th, preached by his pastor, Rev.
Joseph Edwards. Text I Cor. l5th chapter. His favorite song, "Will
Jesus Find us Watching," was sung, after which the body was followed
by
his children, friends and neighbors and laid beside his wife in the
Wheelis Cemetery to await the resurrection morn.
