The citizens of Leon were pained to learn on Tuesday afternoon that CAPT. E.H. ALEXANDER has passed to his reward. The cause of death was congestion of the liver, after a short illness.
CAPT. ALEXANDER was one of the pioneers of the county, and a man universally loved and respected. He was a self-made man in every sense of the term, having started in life at the very bottom of the ladder. He was well known throughout southern Iowa. In his death Leon loses a citizen who was an honor to the community.
He appeared as well as usual until Saturday, and his death came as a surprise to his friends.
The funeral will be conducted today at 11 o'clock from his late residence by the Masons, of which fraternity MR. ALEXANDER was a valued member. Interment will be made in the High Point Cemetery at three o'clock.
CAPT. ELI ALEXANDER was born in Jackson Co., Ind., March ll, l822; died at Leon May 9, l903, aged 8l years and about 2 months. He enlisted in the war with Mexico in l846 in Company F, Second Indiana Infantry. He was at the battle of Buena Vista. In l86l he enlisted in Company A, Thirty-fourth Iowa Infantry, of which he was elected captain. He was at the siege of Chickasaw Bluff, Arkansas Post, and Vicksburg.
He was married to SALLIE E. FLINN in Lawrence County, Indiana, November l, l847. They were the parents of nine children. MR. ALEXANDER came to Decatur County in l855. He lived for many years on his farm in High Point Township, but the last few years has lived in Leon. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity, and the G.A.R.
All his children, who are living, are residents of Leon, except CURTIS, as follows: CURTIS L. ALEXANDER, Hastings, Nebraska; EUGENE O. ALEXANDER; WILLIAM A. ALEXANDER; MRS. S.A. GATES, EMMA E. THOMPSON, ED H. ALEXANDER.
