Decatur County Journal

The following is taken from the Centerville Iowegian:

Friends of CLARENCE GARDNER and MISS ESSIE STONE were greatly surprised

Wednesday noon to learn that they had been married at ll o'clock, had

gone to the l2:30 Burlington train and departed for Des Moines without

the news becoming known. The wedding took place at the home of the

bride's parents, MR. and MRS. A.C. STONE, on E. Maple, Rev. W.P.

Stoddard, of the first M.E. Church, performing the ceremony. Only

immediate relatives were present. No sooner had the couple left on

their journey than their friends got busy, however, and before long the

window in the Continental Drug Store, of which MR. GARDNER is manager,

showed the handiword of ingenious minds and deft hands. An onion patch

represented the garden in which the "gardner" with his rake had been

busy but he was still busier with a wheelbarrow bearing a "stone" and on

a string uniting the "gardner" and the "stone" was a placard with the

word: "united." These young people are well known and popular in the

city. The bride, by her attractive personality, has made many friends,

while the groom has become established among the young business men of

the city and has the warm friendship of a large circle of acquaintences.

CLARENCE is a son of J.D. GARDNER, of Decatur City.
