FORMER DECATUR COUNTY PEOPLE IN ANNUAL MEET

Decatur County Picnic Held in Los Angeles Was Enjoyable Event

MRS BLANCHE KING, now secretary of the Decatur County Association in Los Angeles, furnishes the Journal-Reporter with the following account of the recent annual picnic held there: The fourteenth annual picnic of former residents and visitors from Decatur County, Iowa, was held in West Lake Park in the sun room of the boathouse on January 21, 1933. After the picnic dinner, the meeting was called to order by the president MRS. STELLA ALLEN DUDLEY. Election of officers followed. MISS EVA SMITH, secretary last year is president by rotation. MRS. BOWSHER make a motion that MRS. KING be secretary for next year. Motion carried. MISS EVA SMITH then read a most interesting letter from MISS NORA BIGGS, who was the founder of the organization. She sent her best wishes and sincere thoughts for the association. MISS BIGGS' letters are always appreciated and we hope to receive more of them. The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. MR. BOWSHER made a motion that MRS. DUDLEY write the letter to the Leon Journal-Reporter for ROBERT PALMER, now in England, to read. MR. PALMER was one of the first members of the organization and we hope that he reads his letter, and lets us hear from him. MRS. DUDLEY promised to write this letter at once. A motion was made and carried that hereafter the picnic be held in the boathouse instead of out under the trees. The sun room of the boathouse, overlooking the lake, is an ideal place for the meeting. It is private and also protects the members from the hot rays of the sun, and yet gives us a perfect view of the entire lake, flowers, birds and park. It is with the deepest regret that we record the death of one of our most faithful members, MRS. GRACE HOWARD, who passed away January 7, 1933, in Los Angeles. MRS. HOWARD always looked forward to our picnic, and we will miss her very much. Each member and visitor was asked to say a few words. Each was very interesting and brought back many memories of former days, and comparisons of Iowa and Beautiful California. The meeting was closed by all joining in the singing of "America". The remainder of the afternoon was spent in visiting. Those attending were as follows: M. E. WASSON, 140 S. Larchmont blvd.; BLANCHE WOODARD KING, 1267 So. Rowan Ave.; MR. and MRS. D. A. BUELL, 829 Loma Ave., Long Beach; MR. & MRS. GEORGE EVANS, Long Beach; MRS. J. M. CHASTAIN, 714 W. 41st Place, Los Angeles; MR & MRS. JOHN MUSE, 225 S. Curtis St., Alhambra; MR. & MRS. H. G. The Decatur County picnic is held each year, the Saturday nearest the 19th of January and the organization would be most happy to have anyone that used to live in Decatur County, or are visiting in California, to join the meetings. The Iowa winter picnic is held in Lincoln Park the fourth Saturday of February each year. This year it falls on February 25.
