VAN WERT NEWS:

The entire community was shocked Wednesday evening when the news came that HARRY CARNAHAN, baggageman on the morning passenger going north, had been shot by Dr. McKay, of Osceola. About five o'clock he, in company with Dr. McKay, Dr. Campbell and Wm. McNeff, left town to go hunting. They had taken their supper with them and when they got in Mr. Adams' pasture about 3 l/2 miles west of town prepared to eat their supper. CARNAHAN had just seated himself on the ground and Dr. McKay, in order to scare Dr. Campbell, placed his rifle between Campbell's legs and fired, striking CARNAHAN right above the hip. He did not see CARNAHAN. The wounded man was brought to the Palace Hotel and medical officials summoned from Osceola and a consultation was held. He was taken to Des Moines Thursday morning in hopes of saving his life through the assistance of the x-ray and an operation, but before they reached Des Moines he was suffering with a serious attack of pneumonia. He was taken to the hospital at Des Moines where the bullet was removed but Thursday evening he passed away.

He was taken to his mother's home in Oskaloosa Friday, and Saturday was laid to rest in the Oskaloosa Cemetery. He will be missed by his many friends in this city as well as his companions on the trains. He always spoke a kind word to everybody. He was a favorite among the young people and one of the most accomplished young men of this city. He has boarded in this city for almost two years. He was forty years of age. He was well liked here and every person in town speaks well of the unfortunate man. He was always ready to care for the sick.
