The Davis City Advance, Davis City, Iowa
Thursday, February l0, l898

Word was received here last Saturday evening that a shooting affray had occurred that day at Mercer, Mo., and that as a result one man was dead and another mortally wounded. The dead man and the wounded one were cousins, and were engaged in the mercantile business. Their name was ALLEY. The man's name who did the shooting is reported as being PETER KINDRED. He owed the ALLEY boys a store account, on which they had procured a judgment. It seems that he had been to Lineville, and had got pretty well loaded with "fire water" or in other words was partially drunk. He walked into the ALLEY store, and saying that he had come to settle with them, fired three shots, which resulted as stated above. He was at once placed under arrest and taken to jail at Trenton. Both the ALLEY boys are members of the Woodmen Lodge. The body of the dead man was buried Monday at Mercer, under the direct supervision of his Woodmen brethren. Four of the members of the Davis City Camp attended. They were: OSCAR GRIMES, JOHN TILSE, HENRY TURPIN and ALF. SPARKS. Score another black mark for strong drink!
