This cemetery is on private property. And, should only be visited on Memorial Day. Nearest town: Davis City
History: Now abandoned, very little is known of this cemetery or the families buried here. It is located between the house and farm buildings on the west side of the drive, overlooking the valley to the west. It is fenced, has no gate and is overgrown with weeds, briars and some iris. Before Highway 69 was built, the road came up the hill from the west, then south to the old house which was located north of the cemetery. There are mounds of other unmarked graves. This cemetery is also known as, Asback or Ashburn Cemetery. LOOKUPS: Not sure if anyone would be interested in this information
or not but can get it if you are. My husbands grandfather lives on the
outskirts of Davis City and on his land there is an old cemetery that the
latest dates on the stones are 1910. We know from talking to him that it's
called the GORE CEMETERY. It used to have a separate road that went to
it from behind his property and after time and land changes the only way
to it is through his property. There are about 20-25 stones that we can
see visibly but there are other markers there that are somewhat hidden.
This is a cemetery that has not been seen by many people for a long time
except for us family members due to the fact that nobody knew of it. There
are no records that it even existed because the records were lost in the
fire that took the Decatur County Courthouse years ago. We do know
that some of the names are GORE on the stones but there are others as well.
