History: The McMurtrey brothers, John (and wife,
Eveline) and Joshua (and wife, Nancy) were early settlers coming from
Tennessee and Kentucky in 1854. They gave the land for the cemetery. Elm
Chapel (which was torn down about 1958), was located nearby to the
southwest. The name Elm Cemetery was taken from the elm timber in the
area. The Lentz brothers, who were blacksmiths, made the interesting gate which features a large metal wheel. The following news item appeared in the Leon newspaper about 1930: "Memorial service at Elm Cemetery in Morgan township was held all day May 30. A program was prepared for the event including music by the Douglas orchestra." An * means no tombstone, but indicates a known burial. |
