History: Some graves from a cemetery located on Elk
Creek north of the present cemetery, were moved up the hill to the
present location where Elk Chapel now stands. (See Millsap Cemetery,
which may also have been know as the "original Elk Cemetery.") The name
Elk Creek came not because there were any elk left in Decatur County
when settlers arrived, but probably from the remains of a herd. Three
different families deeded land for the “Elk Grave Yard.” It is a large
cemetery and much of the north section unused; many beautiful old trees.
Henderson Cook gave the land for the cemetery. Deed page 238 Book 34 Mar. 19, 1880 From: A.S. Ross To: Trustees Elk Grave Yard 85/100 of acre more of less Deed page 414 Book 38 Dec. 13, 1880 From: John Fortune and wife, Rebecca To: Trustees Elk Grave Yard “one acre more of less, except what wood is growing on said land.” Deed page 179 Book 37 Jul. 17, 1880 From: Alexander Cook and wife, Jane “in consideration of sum $1 in hand and paid by A.S. Ross of Decatur Co” |
