Earliest tombstone burial: Eli Cash in 1849 History: Eli Cash took a claim in Decatur County in 1845 which his young son, William Cash, afterward entered from the government. Eli died in 1849 and was the first tombstone burial on the Cash land. Although the story goes that while traveling through in 1845 or 46, a father asked Eli Cash if they could bury their little girl on his land. This would have been the first burial, an unmarked grave in southeast corner. The cemetery is fenced with many lovely oak and hickory trees. Deed #128 was recorded on September 1st, 1899 by Wm. Cash & Lydia Cash to the Trustees of Burrell Township one square acre for cemetery purposes. |
