History: Bethel Baptist Church was organized in July 1852. The first church burned in August 1866. The last church was rebuilt in 1871. The land was deeded to the church trustees in 1871 by John and Jane Henderson. Jane's first husband was William K. Maxwell and they came to Decatur County in 1850. Services were held in Bethel Church until 1970 when the membership was moved to the First Baptist Church in Leon. Bethel Cemetery has a record book of burials, one of the few cemeteries in the county with any written records.
