History: Bethel Baptist Church was organized in July 1852. The first church burned in August 1866 and the present church was built in 1871. The land was deeded to the church trustees in 1871 by John and Jane HENDERSON. (Jane was married to William K. MAXWELL first and they came to Decatur County in 1850).

Services were held in Bethel Church until 1970 when the membership was moved to the First Baptist Church of Leon. Bethel Cemetery has a record book of burials, one of the few cemeteries in the county with any written record. The record book is kept by Betty (Mrs. Arlo) HULLINGER of Leon. Burials shown in the book (but no tombstones) are shown in the transcription below.

Deed: John and Jane HENDERSON to trustees of Bethel Baptist Church March 16, 1871.

SURNAMES: An * means no tombstone, but plot book indicates a burial.
