The Frank and Bessie Overholtzer Family

William Franklin Overholtzer came to Decatur County with his parents (William and Mary Long Overholtzer) in 1877. On December 6, 1880, he was united in marriage with Mary Bessie Day, daughter of Daniel and Olive Day of Grand River. To this union were born three children: Minnie Hazel (Mrs. E. J. Hines), Walter Franklin and Zora Grace (Mrs. Roy Brammer).

During his active life, Frank was engaged for many years in faming (sic), then managed a grain and elevator business for the areas of Grand River, Beaconsfield, Ellston, Van Wert and Weldon.

The entire family belonged to the Grand River United Methodist Church in which Bessie was a very active member. Bessie was also a member of the Twentieth Century Club and Royal Neighbors.

Hazel taught school at various locations in this area as well as teaching music at Grand River and Leon for many years. Her husband, Dr. E. J. Hines, practiced dentistry in Decatur County for over fifty years and was director of the Grand River band for approximately fifteen years.

Walter first farmed west of Grand River and later operated the Overholtzer cafe for eighteen years.

Zora taught at the Woodard School until after her marriage then joined her husband in operating the Brammer Cafe until they moved to Spencer, Iowa. They later moved to Dubuque, Iowa, and operated the Brammer Super Value for many years.

William Franklin Overholtzer was born July 18, 1868, and deceased Jan. 26, 1943.

Bessie Day Overholtzer was born Feb. 23, 1874, and deceased May 24, 1966.
