Twice Told Tales - 35 Years Ago
October 30, 1980

Gene Gilbert, Jim Mahan and Chuck McKern of the Leon Southern Iowa Utilities Company were honored by the Iowa Southern Utilities for over 20 years of service. Leon ISU Company was honored as the outstanding company for service, cleanliness and orderliness. Chuck McKern was the Leon manager.

Franklin Main was chosen as Watershed Person of the year for the 14 county Region 9. He was a member of the Decatur County Soil Conservation board. He was chosen for his work on the Little River Watershed.

Lewis Webster, vocational agriculture instructor at the Central Decatur Schools, was selected as a regional winner in the Teacher Division of the Iowa Soil Conservation Awards Program. He would compete with 7 other winners for the State Soil Conservation Service Teacher of the Year.

The community of Garden Grove was saluted on WHO radio. WHO selected Garden Grove in its “Iowa - The Beautiful Land” series.

Shari Ridgway, Lisa Bettin, Christine Deemer, 4-H members from Decatur County, would attend the American Royal 4-H Conference in Kansas City. Marilyn Ridgway will accompany the young ladies.
