Twice Told Tales - 50 Years Ago
October 28, 1965


The officers of the Leon Jaycees were installed at their charter banquet held at the school lunchroom. Officers of the club were Jerry Hall, president; Bob Boord, interior vice president; Eldon Spidle, exterior vice president; Jerry Hines, secretary and Rev. David Dugan, treasurer. Following the banquet, a dance was held at the Veterans Hall with the Chuck Elliott orchestra furnishing the music.

The Band Boosters of the Central Community school were sponsoring a trip for senior band members to Des Moines where they were to hear the United States Marine Band at KRNT Theatre.

Don Marshall, Jim Scott, Orville Reed, Thoral Rex and Harry McBee of Leon; Harold Foltz of Mt. Ayr and Bob Hughes and Maurice Guys of Des Moines returned from two weeks spent elk hunting in western Colorado.

Marie Davenport, Rova Johnston and Marlene Scott were chairmen for the kid’s Halloween party at the Leon Country Club.

W.F. Craig of Davis City observed his 90th birthday October 24 at his home. A cooperative dinner was enjoyed by 52 relatives, including two sisters, his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Five members of the Central Leon high school band tried out for a chair in the 1965 All-State Band. Students taking part were Jim Rash, Alan Spohnheimer, David Elson, Bob Frye and Doug Storey. Their band director was Marvin Post.

Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Petty became the parents of Chris Melton born at the Decatur County Hospital on October 18. He was welcomed home by sister Terri. Grandparents were Mr. and Mrs. Lefty Vanderpool, all of Leon.

Marriage License: James M. Hickman, 34, and Linda R. Oiler, 25, both of Lamoni.
