Hello everyone,
Yikie, this is Eliza Ann Clark Strange. She was Larry's greatgrand aunt. We
have elder cousins in Paonia, Colorado who speak lovingly of the "Strange
folks". Her son, Jack, lived in Colorado a while but then returned to Leon
where he died. Below is a story about him and his brother who was sometimes
called Bill and sometimes Jeff. Following that is a descent outline as we
know it at this point. If anyone is a descendant we would be happy to hear
from you. We do have pix of Jeff and wife and Jack when he was older.

JACK STRANGE
Jack Strange and his family lived at Midway near the Shaeffer ranch where
Jack was hired to work from time to time. Mrs. Strange took the children and
departed with an itinerant "fruit glommer" one day. She never returned nor
did she reveal her whereabouts to her husband. From that time, in about 1916
until 1925 or '26, Jack was with the Fred Shaeffer family much of the time as
a hired ranch hand or just living there between jobs.
He was a hard worker and would outdo himself when left on his own on the
ranch. He loved to surprize my father at the "incredible" amount of work he
had gotten done during his employer's absence. Jack loved children and
always bought gifts for my sister and me when he got his paycheck. He was a
teller of tall tales, which we heard many times - each time with a new twist
- and he liked to sing. I still remember a 24-verse ballad he taught me when
I was about 10 years old.
Jack worked for A.C. Botsford at harvest time some years and one summer,
probably in 1923, he leased the IX ranch from Fred Toland. The following
summer he was one of the crew who finished the Forrest Service road between
East Muddy and Colbran.
We missed Jack when, aging and afflicted with health problems, he
returned to Leon, Iowa, where he had lived as a boy.
Bill Strange, Jack's brother, came with his wife, Bertha, and 10 year old
daughter, Nina, to Ragged Mountain one spring (about 1922) and took up
residence in the John Goding house. Fred Goding commented that the family
would get up in the morning and play cards all day. Bertha and Nina didn't
like the Muddy country because we had no movie house. Bill Strange worked
for A.C. Botsford, my father and maybe other ranchers on the Muddy. The
family lived there for one summer and the following winter.
