The Beginning of Dallas Center

The first census,
through unofficial, reported the 1878 population at 547 with "forty
thriving business concerns."
The first library, the Garfield Library, was founded in Dallas Center in 1882, through the efforts of the ladies of the W. C. T. U. The first telephone exchange, the Farmers, was organized in 1901. The first long distance telephone was at E. L. Nazarene's store. The first automobile, a White Steamer, was purchased by J. B. Simmons in 1901. The first Model T Ford car was owned by O. A. Repass about 1910. He was agent for Ford cars as Ford trucks and tractors were not yet on the market. The first electricity came to Dallas Center on January 24, 1913. |
