The Music Department held a very
important place in high school activities this year. Miss Thora
Hinshaw, musical director, received her training at Drake, where she
studied under Dean Cowper, and at Northwestern. Miss Hinshaw was
very popular with the high school boys and girls, as her large classes
will testify. The one containing the greatest number was the
Girls' Glee, whose enrollment was about 125. They sang on several
occasions and on every appearance were received enthusiastically.
The Boys' Glee Club was composed of thirty-five members. On the basis of a few experienced singers, our instructor brought order out of chaos and developed a chorus of male voices which would be a credit to any high school. After testing the voices, Miss Hinshaw placed the ones she considered best in the cantata. The remaining number all others who cared to enter were allowed to join the Mixed Chorus. The class in Musical Appreciation was not so large this year, but some excellent work was done. With the aid of several new records for the Victrola, our instructor developed in her pupils a love for good music and an admiration for the classical masterpieces. The whole class went to Des Moines during the winter and heard Chas. Gounod's great opera, "Faust," presented by the Chicago Grand Opera Company. The High School Orchestra reorganized early in the fall and under the leadership of Miss Hinshaw had a very successful year. They rendered selections at the Declamatory contest and at numerous other programs. Several of last year's members were lost by graduation, one by death, and one by enlistment, but new members were added to take their places. The orchestra deserves almost as much credit for the success of the operetta as the principals themselves. They practiced regularly and made their assistance a wonderful asset to the musical element of the play. The following constituted this year's members: |
