The Home Economics department, under the efficient management of Miss Anne McCullough, is still holding its place as one of the leading departments in the Perry school work.  During the year special attention has been directed to problems suggested by the war.  In cooking, the classes have been learning to Hooverize, and in sewing, they have made garments for relief work.

In the cooking department the girls have given a series of dinners, the first of which was a dinner served by the ninth and tenth grade girls to soldiers from Camp Dodge.

The Normal Training girls served several dinners.  The menus, which were for six, could not come to more than one dollar.  The classes have also made out wheatless and meatless menus which they used for their cooking lessons.

The sewing this year has been used not only as a means of teaching the girls to sew, but as a means of helping others as well.  The first semester the girls donated their sewing to the Red Cross sale, which was held at the Lincoln building,  They also sewed on articles furnished by the Red Cross.  Another good work done by the sewing classes was the making over of old garments for the Perry poor children.  The grade classes have been doing some sewing for the Belgian babies.  In every way the students have tried to keep in step with the spirit of the times by practicing economy, in the matter of cooking and dress, by lending a helpful hand to the needy, by assisting the government, in learning the lessons of economy and sacrifice and patriotism.
