Girl's Athletics

The basketball season is over and tennis has begun.  The girls are the owners of the south tennis court, which is used in all the recreation hours from sunrise until sunset.  They have not yet held a tournament, but expect to have one before school closes.

During the winter months, when the tennis court was covered with snow, the girls of P.H.S. had work in the gymnasium.  This work was divided into two divisions - the girls of the Freshman class under Miss Tilton's supervision, and the girls of the other classes with Miss Jennings in charge.

The girls of the Freshman class did some splendid work with the Indian clubs and dumb bells.  These girls also spent part of their time in basketball practice..  They had three teams, of which the best was chosen to compete with the other classes.

The other division spent all their time in basketball practice.  Every class had a team.  Although the Seniors had not had a team in their last two years of high school work, they were able to capture second place in the class tournament.  They had two good forwards.  Gertrude Cox made the field baskets, and Kathryn McCleary seldom missed a basket from the foul line.

The Juniors' team were champions.  They never lost a game.  The opposing team knew better than to Susan McCarthy get her hands on the ball; if she did get cornered by her guards, Lois Kugler was there to get the ball.  Frieda, the champion of all players, was their center, with quick little Gertrude Bell as side center.  And what forwards could make a basket with Helen Roberts or Loyaline Fike as guards?

The Sophomores claim the champion guard.  When a Junior forward was asked why she missed a basket, she replied, "Margarite Glass was guarding me."  When the Junior and Freshmam (Freshman) teams met, all agreed that Frieda and Leona were twins in playing center.  Salome Hindert, forward on the Freshman team, deserves much credit.

Each division met one evening every week for practice.  An added inspiration was given to basketball and gym work when the board of education installed a very fine shower for the use of the girls.  This increases very much the pleasure and healthfulness of the exercise.
