Declamatory Contest

On the evening of January 11, 1918, the local declamatory contest was held in the assembly of the high school.  A new trophy cup afforded an incentive for entering the contest and, although no boys participated, there were representatives in the Oratorical, Dramatic and Humorous classes.  Misses Heightshoe, McKee and McKay gave the preliminary coaching and Miss Clara Sheehan, of Drake, put on the finishing touches.  The program was as follows:

Cash prizes of $3 were awarded the contestants ranking first in each class.  These were awarded to Margaret Braman, Frieda Haupert and Lydia Weythman.  Frieda received the highest average of all the contestants, which entitled her to represent Perry at the sub-district contest.  Because only one contestant represented the Junior class, they were not entitled to compete for the trophy cup, which was awarded to the Sophomore class.  No class has ever before been barred from competing for the cup.

The usual amount of pep and class spirit, which attends every high school function, was shown.

On February 8, 1918, the sub-district contest was held at Stuart, Iowa.  As the year of 1918 appears to be different from other years in many ways, it has proven to be different in respect to the contest.  Because all four places in the Dramatic class were taken, the honor of representing Perry at Stuart fell upon Lydia Weythman, whose average in the local contest was second to Frieda's.  Although Perry failed to carry away the coveted first place in the sub-district contest, we were very proud of our representative's work, as she won second place in the Humorous class, losing the first place by only five-tenths of a per cent.
