Alumni

 

     Tom Tiernan, '07, entered the officers' training camp at Fort Snelling and was commissioned as a first lieutenant.  He is now at Camp Custer, Battle Creek, Mich., and attends school a part of each day in preparation for some future work.

     William Murphy, '15, was recommended by Senator Kenyon as qualified for entering the Naval Training School at Annapolis and is now fourth classman, having entered last June.

     Ray Turner, '13, enlisted in the navy last August.  He is the 6th Division of Engineers on the U. S. S. Vermont and has gone on several long cruises.

     Leo Roberts, '14, is in the non-aviation branch of the army.  He is located at Aviation Camp, Waco, Texas.

     Orville Balsbaugh, '10, is in the main part of the French army and is in Co. D, 13th Railway Engineers.  A letter received from him March 27th says they are waiting for the Germans to start their drive.  He is afraid the war will not be over this year unless Japan joins the allies.

     George Balsbaugh, '10, went to Camp Dodge March 4th and was in Co. M, 3d  B. U., 163d Depot Brigade.  He is now at Camp Deveris, Ayer, Mass., in 7th Casual Detachment, 33d Eng. Bldg. 578.

     Harold White, '13, enlisted in the Aviation Division of the Signal Corps, but is still in school waiting to be called.  He passed the state bar examination and received permission from War Department to remain in school and get his degree.

     Vernon Stockton, '11, enlisted at Denver and is now first sergeant, 301st Cavalry, at Camp Fremont, California.

     Darwin Staley, '16, is stationed at Camp Cody, New Mexico.  He is in the 126th Field Artillery and is clerk in the office of Battery S.

     Jerome Deeney, '16, is a member of the Hospital Corps, Iowa Field Hospital 134, Camp Cody, New Mexico.  Jerome was at the border for several months during the Mexican trouble.

     Paul Anderson, '11, is a mechanical engineer in Co. E, 313th Engineers, at Camp Dodge.  He has been promoted to corporal.

     Gene Rouse, '16, enlisted in the Chicago University Red Cross Unit and is now stationed at Fort McPherson, Atlanta, Ga.

     Howard Wickham, '13, is practicing dentistry at Great Lakes, Ill., and has been commissioned as a lieutenant.

     Other graduates of P. H. S. who have enlisted are:  Herman Elsasser, '12; James O'Conner, '14; John Pendy, '15; Edwin Elsasser, '10; Gene Rouse, '16; Leo Spurrier, '13; Howard Wickham, '13; Hugh Davidson, '15; Archer Richards, '14; Paul Anderson, '11; Will Fyfe, '12; Jean McCammon, '15; Charles Stoner, '06.

     Louise Diddy, '14, last summer traveled with the Jones Chautauqua.  She was pianist and soprano soloist and manager of the Lyric Club, composed of a violinist and reader.  Last winter she was with Acme Lyceum Bureau and manager of a musical trio called the Harvard Concert Co.  This coming summer she expects to be with the Travers-Wick Chautauqua in a Mendelsshon (Mendelssohn) Quintet.

     The following members of the class of '17 are attending college:  Dwight Briggs at Grinnell and Ruby Frazier at Dranke; Helen Rolleston at Iowa City; Helen Graham at Springfield, Mo.; Lucile Cross is studying music at Brookings, S. D., and the following are attending at Ames:  Helen Elliot, Mildred Searles, Rachael Morfoot, Harold Borg, Donald Overton, Clifford McTaggert and Evelyn Rowe.
