Curler, Civil War Vet, 91 TodayOne of Three Members Remaining in Redfield Post of the G.A.R.Charles S. Curler, only Perry veteran of the Civil War, today celebrates his 91st birthday if he continues to retain his present health expects to note a few more. There was to be no particular observance of the day for Mr. Curler but friends were expected to call and offer their congratulations during the day at his home 1316 Eleventh street. [hand written - Nov 27, 1939] Only a week ago Mr. Curler with Robert G. Martin, Rippey veteran, and A.W. Armstrong, honorary member and secretary, held a meeting of Redfield Post G.A.R., at the Martin home. So far as is known the two first named are the only surviving veterans in Dallas and Greene counties and they are determined not to surrender their post charter until the end. the post is undoubtedly one of the few in the state which continues active with members paying regular yearly dues and conducting the usual business of the post, which more recently has become the occasion of recalling memories of past incidents and reminiscences. VERMONT NATIVE Mr. Curler is a native of Vermont, and was born at Ferrisburgh. He entered the Union Services when little more than a boy and during the war. Returning from service he continued his residence in the east until 1877 when he came to Iowa and three years later moved to Perry. He is a machinist by trade and was employed in the Perry roundhouse for 21 years being to retired due to his advancing years. He first became a member of Redfield Post G.A.R. in 1880 and has continued that membership since, only last week paying his annual dues with Commander Martin continuing the post in active operation. He is the father of eight childe, three died many years ago. For one of his advanced years, Mr. Curler displays considerable vigor, however, he must be careful of his health due to weakness attended upon his 91 years. His friends in the city extend him the wish for a continuance of health and the observance of more birthdays. Newspaper unknown. Transcribed and contributed by Conni McDaniel Hall January 6, 2022 |
