Introduction

While working with the Denison Review 1917-1919 newspaper articles for my personal genealogy search, I became aware of another story in the papers - the one leading up to and including information and the effects of WW I in Crawford County. Young men started enlisting, marriages increased, and war was declared.

As I started reading I felt it would be of interest to the descendants of these young men if I put in print and made available the names and some of the history I found in the papers.

I have also included some brief articles that reflected the feelings of that time and place, and they are listed in the Topic Index under such headings as FLAG.

Also included are letters home from the soldiers. I would recommend a letter written by Pearl Gary who was a nurse overseas. She writes after the censorship is lifted and her letter gives a very interesting perspective. (1-1-1919).

When checking a name by date please read all articles under that date as, many times, there are two or three items for the same person under one date. There are also other names in these articles but I chose to only list the name of the person mentioned as the one with military involvement.

Additional Notes

There were a lot of pages I didn't copy since I was only pursuing my family backgrounds. If part of a write-up is missing and you feel it might be important to your search, you can order the Denison Review microfilm for that date and obtain the whole article.

I know there will be many names not included as I did not copy all pages, but am entering those names and articles which I do have and hope it is of help for those searching for information.

I chose to type the names exactly as the paper printed them. Some were very difficult to read due to size and copy clarity but I do know from working with Crawford County information over the years that several of the names are misspelled, so please check carefully for names spelled similarly to those for which you are searching.

I have included the date of each article in the paper and also indicated, when possible, the name of the city name under which the article was included.
