Hugo F. Brodersen (1897 - 1988)
Hugo F. Brodersen was born on March 29, 1897 in Otter Creek Township near Schleswig the son of George and Marie Hansen Brodersen and died April 12, 1988, at the Veterans Hospital Omaha, Nebraska, at the age of 91 years.Hugo was raised on the family farm and attended rural school in Otter Greek Township. After his schooling he continued to farm. He was united in marriage to Lillie Ericksen on January 14, 1920, at Schleswig. To this union they were blessed with three children. Hugo and Lillie lived and farmed on the family farm until 1977, at which time they retired and moved to Schleswig. Lillie died on August 26, 1982.
He was baptized on May 29, 1897, and later confirmed into the Lutheran faith at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. Hugo loved to farm and spent a lot of time fishing around the area.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two brothers, Fred Brodersen and Hans Brodersen and one sister, Edna Wieck.
Survivors include, his son, LeRoy Brodersen and his wife Genevieve of Schleswig; two daughters, LaRue and her husband Melvin Schultz of Schleswig and Beverly and her husband Clarence Borre of Arlington Heights, Illinois; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and one sister-in-law, Hilda Brodersen of Denison.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 15, 1988, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig with Pastor, Richard Nelson officiating. Burial was in Morgan Cemetery at Schleswig. Mrs. Marlene Hight was organist for congregational hymns of Rock of Ages and Nearer My God To Thee. Honorary pallbearers were Randall Borre, Darrell Brodersen, DeWayne Schultz, Gary Schultz; Larry Sheeley, Ricky Brodersen, Erick Sheeley, Jason Schultz, Aaron Schultz, Kyle Brodersen and Damon Schultz. The VFW Post No. 3930 and American Legion Post No. 645 of Schleswig were active pallbearers.

Hugo J. Kroeger (1901 - 1991)
Hugo John Kroeger was born March 17, 1901, the son of Peter and Nancy Boysen Kroeger. He died January 6, 1991 at the Manilla Manor Nursing Home in Manilla, Iowa at the age of 89 years.Hugo was born in Schleswig, Iowa where he received his formal education graduating from the Schleswig High School with the class of 1920. After graduation, he continued his education at Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa where he studied for one year. After completing his studies at Morningside College, he returned to Schleswig where he began a 39 year career as a rural mail carrier.
Not long after his return from college, Hugo and Edith Kruse of Troy, Iowa were united in marriage November 17, 1923 in Des Moines, Iowa, and were blessed with the birth of two sons. They remained in the Schleswig area until Hugo retired in 1962. They relocated their home to California to enjoy their retirement together. In 1987, Hugo and Edith returned to Iowa, living for one year in Ida Grove before moving to Denison. Hugo occupied his spare time with gardening, and remained current in farming affairs, and welcomed progress.
Preceding Hugo in death were: his parents, two brothers, Hans and William; and three sister: Julia Grill, Elsie Schwingdorf and Alvina Lohse.
Surviving are: his wife Edith of Manilla Manor; two sons, Donald Kroeger of Longmont, Colorado; and James Kroeger and his wife Patricia of Longview, Washington; five grandchildren; four great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, January 11, 1991 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa. Rev. James Schatz officiated with interment in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig, Iowa. Mrs. Karen Kahl was organist and Mr. Henry Henningsen was soloist. Solo selections were: The Old Rugged Cross and God Be With You Till We Meet Again. Honorary pallbearers were: Ben Garcia, Gerald Jors, James Kroeger Jr., Michael Kroeger and Peter Sirl. Serving as pallbearers were: William Brockman, Bruce Christie, Larry Grill, Fred Jacobs, Alan Teut and Lester Weifenbach. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Walter A. Huebner and Sons' Funeral Service in Denison, Iowa.

Ida (Hamann) Harder (1895 - 1975)
Ida E . Harder, daughter of August and Anna Nissen Hamann, was born May 25, 1895, on a farm in Washington Township, and died Jan. 22, 1975 at her home in Denison, after a short illness, at the age of 79 years.She received her education in the rural schools in the Denison area. On Sept. 4, 1919, she was united in marriage to Rudolph W. Harder in Denison. They settled on a farm near Buck Grove, and continued farming until 1945, when they retired and moved to Denison. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Ladies Aid for many years.
Mrs. Harder was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Karl, and a sister, Mrs. Anna Miller. Survivors include her husband, Rudolph, a daughter, LaVerne (Mrs. Edmund Haase) of Denison. two grandchildren, a brother, August of Council Bluffs, Ia., a sister, Mrs. William Nehls of Denison, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 Saturday, Jan. 25, 1975 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, with Reverend Robert Maschke officiating. Pallbearers were Harold Baedke, Virgil Boeck, Joseph Curnyn, Vernon Haase, James Hibbing, Victor Struck. Interment was in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery with Huebner Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Irene (Jurgensen) Bascom (1910 - 1975)
Irene Margaret Bascom, daughter of Jurgen and Theresa Reimer Jurgensen, was born Dec. 27, 1910, at Charter Oak, and died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 1975 at Crawford County Memorial Hospital at the age of 64 years, 10 months and 2 days.Mrs. Bascom was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Charter Oak. She attended the Lutheran Parochial School and the Charter Oak Public School.
On Dec. 22, 1937, she was united in marriage to John Bascom at Charter Oak. They settled in Shenandoah, where Mr. Bascom was employed by the Soil Conservation Service, later moving to Ames, where they lived until 1945 when they came to Denison. Mrs. Bascom has been in failing health for the past year.
She was preceded in death by her father. Survivors include her husband, John, two children, Jane of Denison and John L. of San Francisco, Calif., her mother, Mrs. Theresa Jurgensen of Denison, two sisters, Mabel (Mrs. Earl Hennings) of Denison and Edna (Mrs. Robert Johansen) of Charter Oak, several nieces and nephews and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 1 at the Zion Lutheran Church with Pastor Robert Maschke officiating. Pallbearers were Earl Hennings, Robert Johansen, Erwin Voss, Edlef Jurgensen, Albert Grell, and Valgene Hennings. Interment was made in Crawford Heights Memory Garden with Huebner Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Irvin R. Bartels (1898 - 1976)
Irvin Raymond August Bartels, son of Fred and Maggie Radden Bartels, was born on a farm in Monona County, near Mapleton, Aug. 8, 1898 and died at the Carroll Manor Nursing Home in Carroll, Thursday, Oct. 7, 1976, having attained the age of 78 years, 1 month and 30 days.Mr. Bartels attended rural schools, and was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church. He farmed and lived in the Mapleton and Charter Oak vicinity all his life. Jan. 16, 1921 he was united in marriage to Lula Dorale of Charter Oak.
They made their home on farms near Mapleton and later Charter Oak. They were blessed with one son and two daughters. In 1945 they moved to Ricketts. Mr. Bartels served as postmaster in Ricketts from 1950 to 1968. Mrs. Dorale died in 1965. Mr. Bartels continued to live in Ricketts until May of this year at which time he entered the Carroll Manor Nursing Home due to ill health.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lula, two brothers, Roy and infant brother. Survivors include two daughters, Bernice, Mrs. Walter Kuhlmann of Lake Elsinore, Calif., Ilene, Mrs. Emmett Petersen of Carroll, one son, Glen of Lake Worth, Fla., 7 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Mae Plagge of Mapleton, and Mrs. Myrtle Plagge of Decorah, several nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Sat. at 10:30 a.m. at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Ricketts, with Pastor Dale Werling officiating. Mrs. Loren Lee served as organist and the congregation sang Rock of Ages, I'm But a Stranger Here, What a Friend we have in Jesus. Interment was made in the Morgan Township Cemetery Schleswig. Pallbearers were Alvin Steffen, Fred Plagge, LaVern Plagge, Gene Henningsen, David Henningsen, Loren Lee. Huebner Funeral Home was in charge of services.

Irvin T. Bubke (1916 - 1977)
Irvin Theodore Bubke was born Dec. 19, 1916 at Battle Creek, the son of Emil and Anna Bubke. He died on Febr. 15, 1977 at Crawford County. Memorial Hospital, Denison, at the age of 60.As a young man he was raised and educated in the Battle Creek area. He was baptized and confirmed at the Lutheran Church in Grant Township.
In October, 1942 he was united in marriage to Wacilla Young. Wacilla died on March 1, 1951.
On June 7, 1952 he was reunited in marriage to Edyth Porter at Battle Creek. Together they continued to farm in the Schleswig area which Irvin had started in 1942, and continued until 1972.
Survivors include his wife, Edyth of Schleswig, two daughters Barbara and her husband Gailen Lyman, Rancho Cordova, Calif. and Connie and her husband Dwayne Lee, Ricketts. By eight sons, Leroy and his wife Sybil; Harlan, Tommy and his wife Cathy, Schleswig; Donald and his wife Velva, Mapleton; Mike and his wife Lila, Denison; Leon of Malaysia; Roger and his wife Shawn, Schleswig; Steven and his wife Karen, Denison; and Tim at home Schleswig, also by 18 grandchildren, by his mother Mrs. Anna Bubke of Ida Grove, a niece Pam King, four brothers Glenn Bubke, Kingsley; Marvin Bubke, Schleswig; Dwaine Bubke, Schaller and Raymond Bubke of Cedar Rapids; by three sisters Mrs. Ella Fredericks, Alta, Mrs. Ivan (Irene) Thornhill, Tucson, Ariz. and Mrs. Helen Piper of StormLake.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Febr. 17 at 10:30 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig. The Rev. Theodore Letzring officiated. Burial was made in the Morgan Township cemetery . Pallbearers included Ronald Thornhill, Russell Bubke, Gordon Bubke, Dennis Bubke, John Adamson and Jon Bubke. Honorary pallbearers included Donald Kline, Elmer Kuhlmann, Clarence Bielenburg, Bill Benson, Edward Neddermeyer and Emil Petersen. Irwin H. Bielenberg (1917 - 1985)
Irwin Henry Bielenberg was born on June 23, 1917 near Schleswig, Iowa, the son of Herman and Meta Naeve Bielenberg. He died Monday evening at his home in Charter Oak at the age of 68.Irwin spent his formative years on a family farm in Crawford County. He received his formal education in the rural schools near his home.
Irwin was united in marriage to Eva Anna Jepsen on August 29, 1938 in Des Moines. Together they made their first home on a farm in Crawford County. Irwin entered the United States Navy on April 7, 1944. His tour of duty included service on the U.S.S. Mississippi. He was discharged from the Navy on October 29, 1945. Following his military service, Irwin was employed for a number of years by Bell Telephone. He later worked a number of years for Midwest Industries on construction until retirement in 1973.
Irwin was preceded in death by his father and mother. Survivors include his wife Eva of Charter Oak, six sons, Merle of Schleswig, Richard of Fulton, Illinois, Virgil of Storm Lake, Ronald of Kearney, Nebraska, Dale of Summerville, South Carolina, and Lyle of Ida Grove, and four daughters, Shirley, Mrs. Aaron Raszler and Lois, Mrs. Richard Wiess both of Omaha, Nebraska, Barbara, Mrs. Ronald Fritz of Castana, and Linda, Mrs. Melvin Cerny of Ashland, Nebraska. He is further survived by twenty-six grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and one sister, Larue, Mrs. Lawrence Bartels of Schleswig.
Funeral services were held on Thursday November 14, 1985 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Charter Oak. Interment was in the Charter Oak Cemetery. The Rev. James Gubser officiated at the services and graveside rites. Mrs. Carol Hunter served as organist for the services. Congregational hymns for the services included How Great Thou Art and The Old Rugged Cross. Military honors were provided by Homer Hall Post No. 66. Serving as pallbearers were grandsons Michael Fritz, Dean Fritz, Kenneth Fritz, Steven Bielenberg, Richard Bielenberg, Randy Raszler, David Fritz, and Rodney Raszler.

James R. Nemitz (1937 - 2000)
James Richard Nemitz was born November 23, 1937, the son of Ernest and Agnes Garbe Nemitz. He died on Tuesday, April 11, 2000 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa at the age of sixty-two.Jim was born in Ida Grove, Iowa and was baptized in Christ on December 19, 1937 in Schleswig, Iowa by Rev. Schwidder and later confirmed on March 29, 1953 at St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, Iowa. He received his education in a rural school near his home, the St. Paul's Lutheran School in Hanover Township and Charter Oak Community School, graduating with the class of 1957. After completing his education, Jim helped on the family farm.
On June 21, 1959, Jim was united in marriage to Marilyn Eggert at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa by Rev. Schmidt. The couple made their home on a farm south of Ricketts, until 1968, when they moved to a farm near Denison. In the early 1990's Jim retired from farming and worked in the roofing business including Feller Roofing Company in Denison, until recently retiring. Jim was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hanover Township, Charter Oak. He enjoyed polka dancing, socializing, attending sporting events and playing cards.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Phillip. Survivors include his wife, Marilyn of Denison; two daughters, Janine Whited and her husband, Brian of Owatonna, Minnesota; Janelle Johnson and her husband, Joel of Denison; one son, Jim Nemitz and his wife, Emalee of Davis, Illinois; five grandchildren, Kristin and Alex Whited; Jennifer and Jeremy McMinemee; Jakob Nemitz; one sister, Lois Lewis and her husband, Glenn of Denison; and mother-in-law, Lydia Eggert of Denison; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., April 14, 2000 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hanover Township, Charter Oak, Iowa, with burial at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Shirley Stull provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns How Great Thou Art, Amazing Grace and Onward, Christian Soldiers. Those serving as pallbearers were Melvin Neddermeyer, Allan Neddermeyer, Vernon Nemitz, David Nemitz, Merle Keim and Mark Lewis. Honorary Pallbearers were Louis Hargens Jr. and Robert Meyer. A prayer service was held at 7:30 P.M., Thursday at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison.

Jerome W. Hess (1893 - 1975)
Jerome Wesley Hess was born on April 5, 1893 to Mr. Edwin. G. Hess and his wife Jane Brazell Hess, in Crawford County near Ricketts, Iowa. He passed away suddenly and unexpectedly in his home in Schleswig on the morning of Friday, June 6, 1975, at the age of 82 years, 2 months and 1 day.Mr Hess attended school at Charter Oak where he graduated from High School and the University of Iowa. He also served in the Army in World War I.
On June 5, 1920, he was married to Clara Louise Van Tuil. Three children were born to this family, Norma Jane, Robert Edward and Gerald Lewis.
He lived in Schleswig most of his lifetime where he owned and operated the Schleswig Motor Co from 1929 to 1960. He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church while living here and was also active in many local civic activities: the American legion Post, Denison Gun Club, Schleswig Community Club. He served as a member of the City Council and local school board also managing the city softball team for many years and was on city bowling teams.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and one son, Robert Edward. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Clara Hess of Schleswig and their children and families Norma Jane of Des Moines, Iowa and Gerald Lewis of Duluth, Minnesota , also a brother. Dale Hess of Des Moines, Iowa, eight grandchildren and one great- grandchild.
Funeral services were held Monday, June 9, 1975, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig with Rev. Theo, A. Leming officiating. Mrs. Don Thompson was the organist. The congregation sang What A Friend We Have In Jesus and the choir sang The Lord's My Shepherd. Interment was in the Morgan Township Cemetery with military honors by the local American Legion and V. F. W. Posts.

Jessie (Eyer) Hennings (1886 - 1971)
Funeral services for Mrs. Jessie Hennings were held Wednesday, June 16, 1971, at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Ricketts, Iowa. Rev. F.A. Wiese officiated. Mrs. Loren Lee was the organist and the congregation sang In the Hour of Trial and Asleep in Jesus.Jessie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Eyer, was born in Crawford County on October 12, 1886. She grew up northwest of Charter Oak. She was joined in marriage to Chris Hennings Sr. The couple farmed in Soldier Township. In 1919, they moved to Ricketts which became their home. Her husband died in 1953. For the past several years, Jessie's health has not been very good and she died in Claudia's Nursing Home in Denison this past Sunday, June 13. She was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband Chris Sr. and three children: Mae, Arthur and Chris Jr. Survivors include two sons Earl of Denison and Virgil of Kansas,City, Kansas, 7 grandchildren and 6 great- grandchildren She attained to 84 years, 8 months and 1 day. Pallbearers were: Gerald Eyer, Arlen Hennings, Verdeen Hennings, Lavern Eyer, Valgene Hennings and Verle Hennings.

Johanna (Detlefsen) Beam (1910 - 1976)
Johanna Beam, daughter of Jurgen and Emma (Tebbe) Detlefsen, was born on March 28, 1910 in Paradise Township Crawford County, Iowa. She died at her home in Arion at the age of 66 years, 3 months and 7 days.She was baptized in St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Hanover Township. She was confirmed in Bethlehem Lutheran Church at Dow City by Pastor Lanerne Nutzmann.
She was married to Clarence A. Beam of Dow City on August 18, 1927, at Denison, by Rev. Bingeman, They made their home on a farm until 1960 at, which time they moved to Arion. To this union eleven children were born.
She was preceded in death by her husband who died December of 1969, one son John Allen who died in infancy, her parents, one sister, Amanda, Mrs. John Ludemann.
Survivors include 8 sons: Gilbert of Dow City, Vernon of Arion, Glen of Dow City, Dale of Buck Grove, Gene of Buck Grove, Eddie of Arion, Paul of Denison, and James of Arion. Two daughters: Mrs. Tom Dalton (Evelyn) of Denison and Mrs. Oliver Osborn (Jane) of Arion, 26 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, and one brother, Arnold Detlefsen of Dow City and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Thursday, July 8, 10:30 a.m. at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church Dow City, with Rev. Paul Stengel officiating. Mrs. Darrell Ketelsen served as organist and Mrs. Richard Detlefsen sang Asleep in Jesus and Rock of Ages. Interment was made in the Crawford Heights Memorial Gardens. Eight sons served as pallbearers-Gilbert, Vernon, Glen, Dale, Gene, Eddie, Paul and James. Huebner Funeral Home was in charge of the services.

Johannes A. Bottger (1917 - 1973)
Johannes A. Bottger, son of Johannes Bottger and Martha nee Kusch, was born in Otter Creek Township, Crawford County, Iowa on January 7, 1917, and died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital on Sunday, January 28, 1973. He lived all his life in the Schleswig community, attending the rural schools and the local high school. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church, and at the time of his death was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig.He worked on various farms, was employed by the J. R. Coil Company of Ida Grove for six years and with Iowa Beef Processors for the past twelve years.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Olga and Hilda and two brothers Otto and Alfred. He is survived by his brother Raymond of Shell Knob, Missouri and his sister Irmgard Tibbs of Schleswig, and one nephew Thomas Tibbs of Clovis, New Mexico. He attained to 56 years and 21 days.
Funeral services were held at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig on Wednesday, January 31, 1973, with Rev. F.A. Wiese officiating. Mrs. Ray Schmidt was the organist. The congregation sang My Faith Looks Up To Thee and the choir sang Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me. Pallbearers were: Chris Sands, Nick Wilken, Ernie Grell, P.J. Moeller, Palmer Peters and Johannes Wilken. Interment was in Morgan Cemetery.

Johannes Breckling (1901 - 1982)
Johannes Breckling was born on August 6, 1901 in Schleswig, Germany, the son of Jurgen and Key Namanny Breckling. He died on Tuesday, February 23, 1982 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, Iowa at the age of 80.Johannes was raised and educated in Germany. He was baptized as an infant and later confirmed in the Christian faith. During the years of his early adult life he came to the United States. He made his first home in Winner, South Dakota. Later after moving to Iowa he worked in the Schleswig community. Some years later he purchased his own farm. In 1954, Johannes retired and moved to Schleswig.
On September 24, 1964, Johannes was united in marriage to Eleanor Groth Fredericks in Jackson, Minnesota. Together they made their home in Schleswig.
Johannes was preceded in death by his parents, and twelve brothers and sisters. Survivors include his wife, Eleanor of Schleswig; one step-son, LeRoy Fredericks of Schleswig; four step-grandchildren, Brian, Bryce, Brenda and Bradley; and one brother, Julius Breckling of Germany.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 27, 1982 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. The Rev. Fred Moore officiated at the services. Pallbearers included Roland Struck, Ralph Struck, Ray Bruhn, Lorenz Petersen, Nick Wilken and Johannes Wilken.

John F. Abbe (1884 - 1968)
Funeral services for John F. Abbe were held on Tuesday, July 23, 1968 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig with Rev. F. A. Wiese officiating. Organist was Mrs. Bernice Gronau. The choir sang the hymn Be Still My Soul, and the congregation sang Abide With Me.John Frederick, son of Theodore Abbe and Mary nee Stange, was born in Grant Township on December 21, 1884. He was both baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church, Grant Township. He held membership in Immanuel Lutheran Church for the past 18 years.
After his marriage to Hertha Marsh on November 27, 1907, the couple farmed for 35 years in Grant Township, and 8 years in Blaine Township, Ida County. 18 years ago, the couple retired in Schleswig. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary here in 1967. John's health has been failing for the past year and he died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital on Saturday, July 20th.
He is survived by his wife Hertha; seven children: Mrs. Clara Stockfleth of Danbury, Irene, wife of Carl Paulson of Ida Grove, Leonard of Schleswig, Alice, wife of Ray Bruhn of Schleswig Theodore of Glenwood, Esther, wife of Henry Jepsen from Spirit Lake, and Lois; wife of Raymond Scott of Danbury. 15 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and one sister Mrs. Annie Miller of Schleswig. He attained to 83 years, 6 months and 29 days. Interment was made at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Grant Township.

John Henningsen, son of Peter Henningsen and his wife, Mary, nee Lass, was born Aug. 27, 1877 in Jackson County, Ia. As a small child he came with his parents to Crawford County where he grew to manhood.He was married to Bertha Lehfeldt on July 10, 1906. Eight children were born to this union. After their marriage they resided on the farm in Goodrich township until 1946 when they came to live in Denison. One year later they moved to Deloit.
Henningsen had been in poor health in recent years being hospitalized a number of times. April 16 he was taken to the Memorial hospital in Denison and here he died April 18.
Surviving his death are his widow, the following children: Walter of Denison, Mrs. Milda Heide of Denison, Mrs. Irene Sachau of Denison, Mrs. Emily Schurke of Deloit, Milroy of Denison, Harold of Denison, Henry and Mrs. Bernice Nihsen of Denison; 30 grandchildren and two brothers, William of Denison and Rudolph of Vail. Three grandchildren preceded him in death.
Henningsen was baptized and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith. His funeral service was held from the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison April 21 with the Rev. Carl W. Schmidt of Denison in charge. Interment was made in the Oakland Cemetery. Pallbearers, were: Malo Henningsen, Kermit Henningsen, Darwin Heide, Delbert Sachau, Curtis Sachau and Robert Henningsen.

John H. Neumann (1911 - 1993)
John Herman Neumann was born on Sept. 29, 1911, the son of John and Marie Thomsen Neumann. He died on Tuesday, June 8, 1993 at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison at the age of 81 years.John was born near Ute. He was baptized on Oct. 20, 1911 and later confirmed on March 26, 1926 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. He received his education at the Zion Lutheran School in Denison. After receiving his education he worked for his Dad at the Boy's Store in Denison and as a farm hand for various farmers.
On Feb. 6, 1938 he was united in marriage to Esther Petersen of Carroll at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. The couple settled on the family farm northwest of Denison and were blessed with the birth of two daughters. In 1972 the couple moved to Denison, where John was employed by Carlyle Memorials until his retirement due to failing health. John was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. He was a caring and loving husband and father. He enjoyed socializing in a game of cards with his friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother in infancy. Survivors include his wife, Esther of Denison; two daughters: Marilyn Hansohn and her husband, Gene of Omaha and Sandra Jepsen of Olathe, KS; also four grandchildren: Hope Hansohn and Matthew, Heather and Lincoln Jepsen.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, June 11, 1993 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Pastor Kurt Kaiser and Pastor Philip E. Bloch officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Denison. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Henry Henningsen singing How Great Thou Art and I'm But a Stranger Here and congregational hymn Rock of Ages, Clef for Me. Pallbearers were: Donald Petersen, Wilbur Reimers, Butch Munson, Jim Petersen, Jeff Roeder and Tom Carlyle. The Walter A. Huebner and Sons' Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

John J. Bauer (1887 - 1975)
John J. Bauer, son of Friedericka (Bauer) and Robert Bauer was born on a farm near Buck Grove, Dec. 31, 1887, and died Friday July 4, 1975 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, having reached the age of 87 years 6 months and 3 days.Mr. Bauers' parents were born in Germany, they made their home on the farm near Buck Grove, where he was born and raised and continued to live for 75 years, until retiring to Denison in 1963.
Mr. Bauer attended rural and Lutheran Schools. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. On March 14, 1917 he was united in marriage to Minnie Nelsen of Neligh, Nebraska in Denison by Reverend William Frees. They were blessed with one son and one daughter. Their son Raymond died in 1940.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one on Raymond. a sister Emma and three infant brothers. Survivors include his wife, Minnie, one daughter Ardell, Mrs. Marvin Voss of Denison, one granddaughter, one grandson, 5 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, cousins and other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held Monday, July 7, 10:30 a.m. At the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, with Pastor Robert Maschke officiating. Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist and Henry Henningsen sang How Great Thou Art and The Old Rugged Cross. The Congregation sang, I'm but a Stranger Here, Heaven is My Home. Pallbearers were, Walter Denker, Ollie Wigg, Herman Hast, John Ruberg, Rudolph Hollander, and Walter Maack. Interment was made in the Oakland Cemetery.

John L. Boettger (1923 - 1974)
John LeRoy Boettger, son of John and Elsie Finneran Boettger was born on a farm in Hanover Township, October 8, 1923, and died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison on Friday, August 16, 1974.Jack was raised on the farm and attended rural schools. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith. He farmed in the Denison Community before purchasing the Jo Mart Steak House and Motel in 1961. The Girl's Softball Team, the Men's Softball team, the Jacks, and several bowling teams were sponsored by him. He was active in many ways toward helping the community. He served as chairman of Coffee Day for Crawford retarded children.
He was preceded in death by his mother. Survivors include his father, John of Denison, four brothers, Raymond and Hugo of Dow City, Arthur and Lester of Denison, several nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral Services were held Monday, August 19, 1974, at 10:30 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison with Rev. Robert Maschke officiating. Mrs. Robert Maschke served as organist and Henry Henningsen sang The Lord's Prayer and The Old Rugged Cross. The congregation sang Rock of Ages. The following served as pallbearers, Roger Boettger, Jerry Boettger, Terry Boettger, John Boettger, Larry Boettger and Henry Boettger. Interment was made in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens. Huebner Funeral Home was In charge of services.

Karen Rasmussen (abt 1893 - 1987)
Karen Rasmussen, 94, of Manilla died Friday at Manilla Manor. Funeral services were held Sunday at First Presbyterian Church at Manilla. Burial was in Nishnabotna Cemetery.Rasmussen was born in Denmark and came to the United States at age 17 with her brother. In San Francisco she met Peder Rasmussen whom she married in 1914. They moved to Omaha, Nebr., where Peder worked as a carpenter. In 1917 they moved to Manilla where Peder later established the Rasmussen Lumber Co.
She is survived by four sons, Leo, Otto, Jack and Bob, all of Manilla; six daughters, Anna (Mrs. Harold) Justice of Bella Vista, Ark., Elna (Mrs. Lucien) Bender of Bella Vista, Ark., Mable Prosin of Atlanta, Ga., Betty (Mrs. Bob) Harvey of Corpus Christi, Texas, Doris (Mrs. Kenneth) Loeffelman of St. Louis, Mo., and Carmen (Mrs. Jack) Heck of Bella Vista, Ark.; 34 grandchildren; 53 great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren.

Karl W. Hamann (1888 - 1964)
Karl William Hamann was born Aug. 27, 1888 and died on Sept. 28, 1964, at the age of 76 years, 1 month and 1 day. He was the son of August F. Hamann and Anna Nissen. Mr. Hamann was baptized in the Lutheran Faith in infancy and was confirmed in the Washington Township Lutheran Church on April 16. 1905.On May 6, 1914 he was united in marriage to Ida Meyer and to this union one daughter, Hilda, was born.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Hilda, and on April 21, 1958 by his wife.
Left to mourn his death is his son-in-law, Ben Stegemann, four grandchildren, one great grandson, three sisters, Mrs. William Nehls, Mrs. Emil Miller and Mrs. Rudolph Harder; one brother, August Hamann, and numerous cousins and friends.
Funeral services were held at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Rev. Frederick A. Wiese officiated. Pallbearers were Emil Bruns, William Eggert, William Ehlers, Earnest Miller, John Ruberg and William Sonnichsen. Interment was in the Lutheran Cemetery in Denison.

Kate (Koos) Arnold (1887 - 1964)
Kate Margaret Koos, the daughter of Jurgen Koos and his wife, Margaretha Wamser, was born Jan. 25, 1887 at Walnut, where she also grew to womanhood.She was married to Otto Arnold on Dec. 13, 1911. After their marriage they lived on their farm south of Denison. Here Mr. Arnold preceded her in death on Oct. 12, 1953.
She moved to Denison in 1954 where she has resided since that time. About three months ago she became ill and was taken to the local hospital late in January for six days. On March 21 she returned to the hospital and here she died on Wednesday afternoon at 4:45.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Mervin and Lucile Arnold, one granddaughter, Sharlene, by four sisters, Mrs. Anna Hansen, Mrs. Marie Koeppe and Mrs. Emma Lafrentz of Walnut and Mrs. Bertha Emmons of Oakland, Calif.; by two brothers, Marx and Henry Koos of Walnut. Two brothers, John and William; preceded her in death.
She was baptized in infancy and, later confirmed in Zion Lutheran Church. She was a member of our Ladies Aid for a number of years.
Funeral, services were held on April 11 at Zion Lutheran church. Rev. C. W. Schmidt officiating. Fred Greinke served as organist. Interment was made in the Lutheran cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers; Walter Beermann, Harry Martens, Jr., Robert Rath, Harry Christensen, Herbert Rath, and Werner Rath.

Kate (Voss) Hansen (1896 - 1962)
Mrs. Charles Hansen died at her home on Main Street on Sunday afternoon at 4:30. She had been in failing health for several weeks.Kate Voss, daughter of Claus Voss and his wife Lena nee Lange, was born June 3, 1896, in Clinton County, Ia. Later she went to Minnesota to make her home.
She was married to William Christiansen and to this union three children were born Raymond, Walter and Fern, all of whom have preceded her in death.
She was wed to Charles Hansen on Aug. 2, 1924 and to this union one child was born. They farmed in Goodrich Township until 15 years ago when they came to their present home in Denison.
Funeral services were held at Zion Lutheran church on Jan. 23 with the Rev. Carl Schmidt in charge. Interment was made in the Morgan township cemetery. Pallbearers were Carl Holtman, Peter J. Jepsen, August Petersen, Herbert Johannsen, Karl Reichert and John A. Meggers.
Survivors are one daughter, Mrs. Vernette Nehls of Denison; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two step-daughter's, Mrs. Anna Schroeder of Denison and Mrs. Elsie Schroeder of Schleswig; two step-sons, Raymond of Denison, and Vernon of Woodland Hills, Calif.; seven step-grandchildren. Three brothers: Claus of Lake Park, Harry of Isle, Minn. and Louie of Round Lake, Minn. Two brothers and one sister preceded her in death.

Kenneth H. Nemitz (1934 - 2003)
Kenneth Herbert Nemitz was born December 28, 1934, the son of August and Edna Neddermeyer Nemitz. He died Monday, July 14, 2003 on the family farm, near Charter Oak, Iowa at the age of sixty-eight.Kenneth was born on the family farm, Hanover Township near Charter Oak. He was baptized in Christ, January 20, 1935 by Rev. H.M. Zagel, also on the family farm. He received his early education at St. Paul's Lutheran School, a rural school near his home and St. John's Lutheran School in Charter Oak.
He was confirmed on April 2, 1950 at St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak by Rev. Walter Schroeder. Kenneth continued his education at the Charter Oak High School, graduating with the class of 1954. After completing his education he worked for the Charter Oak Implement and area farmers.
On June 26, 1955, Kenneth was united in marriage to Arlene Wellendorf at the Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Church in Schleswig, Iowa by Rev. Baumgartner. The couple made their home on the family farm in Hanover Township and were blessed with the birth of three children, Natalie, Debra and Pamela.
Kenneth was a devoted life long member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, where he held various church offices, including Sunday School Superintendent, Elder, Trustee and presently President of St. Paul Congregation. He was also serving as Hanover Township Clerk. He was a very loving and caring husband, father, grandfather and brother who enjoyed spending time with his family, especially on the holidays, Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas and displaying his lighted Christmas array. He was an avid farmer who also enjoyed nature, keeping the squirrels and the birds well fed. Kenneth loved woodworking, making things for his family and in later years made a Christmas gift for each of the Sunday School children at St. Paul. He enjoyed socializing with family and friends over coffee at the local coffee shop. In his leisure time, he enjoyed playing cards with his friends, attending antique auctions and collecting occupied Japan pieces. Kenneth was known for his great sense of humor.
Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents, August and Edna Nemitz; his father-in-law, Harvey Wellendorf; his grandparents, Fred and Emma Nemitz and Marvin and Augusta Neddermeyer; also one nephew, Rodney Nemitz.
Survivors include his wife, Arlene of Charter Oak; three daughters, Natalie Bohlmann and her husband, Dean of Charter Oak; Debra Sexton and her husband, Mick of Danbury; Pamela Claussen and her husband, Spencer of Schaller; five grandchildren, Brett and Derek Bohlmann, Brandi Sexton, Morgan and Hunter Claussen; his mother-in-law, Ruth Wellendorf of Schleswig; two brothers, Milfred Nemitz and his wife, Jeanette of Denison; August Nemitz Jr. of St. Joseph, Missouri; a sister-in-law, Delores Nemitz of Kiron; two brothers-in-law, Dale Wellendorf and his wife, Sharon of Ida Grove; Brian Wellendorf and his wife, Tina of Ida Grove; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, July 17, 2003 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hanover Township, Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. Eugene Ernst officiated the service and grave side rites held at the St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in Hanover Township. Shirley Stull provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Eldon Hardekopf singing Nearer, My God, to Thee and What a Friend We Have in Jesus and congregational hymns Just as I Am, Without One Plea and Abide with Me, Fast Falls the Eventide. Kenneth R. Nelson (1945 - 2005)
Kenneth R. Nelson Jr. was born November 10, 1945, the son of Kenneth R. and Evelyn Heue Nelson Sr. He died Wednesday, March 2, 2005 at the Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa at the age of fifty-nine.Kenny was born in Carroll, Iowa. He received his education at the Vail Community School, graduating from the Ar-We-Va Community High School with the class of 1964. He entered the United States Army September 2, 1965 and served with the 823rd Ordinance Company. After receiving his honorable discharge January 10,1967, he returned to Vail and worked at Marvin's Meat Provisions.
On July 27, 1969, Kenny was united in marriage to Beverly Holtman. The couple made their home in Denison and were blessed with the birth of three children. Kenny worked for the Denison Community School District for twenty-seven years.
Kenny was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Denison and a member of the Vail American Legion for thirty-seven years. He was a loving husband, caring father and grandfather who loved spending time with his family. He enjoyed dancing, entertaining at various nursing homes on his accordion and playing for dances at the Arcadia Legion Ballroom.
Preceding Kenny in death were his parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles. Survivors include his wife, Beverly of Denison; two sons, David Nelson and his wife, Michelle of Ida Grove; Delaine Nelson and his wife, Carla of Ute; one daughter, Darla Nelson of Jackson, Minnesota; five grandchildren and three step-grand-children; one sister, Mary Kay Lange of Elk Horn, Iowa; one brother, Steven Nelson of Vail; one sister-in-law, Dorothy Listamann and her husband, Delaine of Denison; two nieces; one nephew; aunts and uncles; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 5, 2005 at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. David Loeschen officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Mary Kuhlmann provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Sue Rosener singing Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound and Beautiful Savior and for congregational hymn Abide With Me. Honorary pallbearers were: Herb and Deloris Riesselman, Louie and Donna Miller, Esther William, Irma Jurgens and Elmer Lorenzen. Pallbearers were; Jerry Radcliffe, Walter Huebner, Scott Schurke, Glen Quandt, Glenn Nissen and Larry Crane. Military honors were the Vail American Legion Post 65 and Westside American Legion Post 196. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Women's Guild. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Kevin W. Lafrentz (1952 - 2001)
Kevin Wayne Lafrentz was born February 5, 1952, the son of Wayne and Nola Aldag Lafrentz. He died September 16, 2001, in Schleswig, Iowa at the age of forty-nine.Kevin was baptized March 30, 1952 and was confirmed on May 22, 1966 at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. He received his education in the Schleswig Community Schools, graduating with the class of 1970. After graduation, he drove truck, worked at Farmland Foods and began farming.
On June 15, 1974, he was united in marriage to Janet Buffum at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. The couple was blessed with the birth of two children, Amy and Brooke.
In his spare time, Kevin enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, playing cards with friends, and going to the Friday night races in Denison. Having his morning coffee with friends at Teut's and Shirley's was a daily routine. He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather who loved going to his children's activities. He was an avid sports fan, following the Schleswig Hawks, Lady Monarchs and Monarchs. He enjoyed babysitting his grandson Connor, and cooking for his family, friends, and Brooke's friends. Most of all, he was known by his family for being the best "papa". He was a member of the United Church of Christ, a past member of Izaak Walton League and the Kiron and Danbury fast-pitch Softball teams. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Schleswig Golf Course.
He is survived by his loving wife, Janet; their two daughters, Amy and Brooke; one grandson, Connor; his parents, Wayne and Nola Lafrentz, all of Schleswig; one sister, Pam Allen and her husband, Mitch of Canyon, Texas; his father and mother in-law, Harlan and Barbara Buffum of Schleswig, Iowa; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Pam and LaWayne Gronau of Schleswig; other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 19, 2001, at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Juanita Gillies and Rev. Wayne Fritzinger officiated the service and grave side rites held at Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Organist Dorothy Jessen provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns Here I Am, Lord, and You'll Never Walk Alone. Laurretta (Ullrich) Baeth (1905 - 1987)
Laurretta Mary Baeth was born September 3, 1905, in Charter Oak, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph Ullrich and Annal Holdgrafer Ullrich. She died September 6, 1987, at Morningside Care Center, Ida Grove, Iowa.Laurretta attended St. Mary's parish school in Mapleton and following graduation from a business school in Sioux City, was employed at the First State Bank, Mapleton, Iowa.
On January 30, 1928, Laurretta and Carl. L. Streck were united in marriage in Mapleton and farmed in the Mapleton and Charter Oak areas until buying the Johnny Riessen farm in 1944 and moving to Schleswig. Two sons were born to their union, one of whom died in infancy.
Carl Streck died in 1956 and Laurretta married John H. Baeth October 4, 1958. They continued to reside on the farm until moving into Schleswig in 1968. Laurretta entered the Morningside Care Center in Ida Grove in September 1985 and John currently resides at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison.
In addition to her parents, infant son and first husband, Laurretta was preceded in death by four half-brothers, three sisters and four brothers.
She is survived by one sister, Selma Scott of Eugene, Oregon; her son, Wayne C. Streck and his wife, Ruth of Clearwater, Florida; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday, September 10, 1987, at Sacred Heart Church in Ida Grove with burial at St. Mary's Cemetery in Danbury. Rev. R.W. Phillips officiated. Serving as pallbearers were Harold Riessen, Harry Riessen, Raymond Jepsen, Loren Jepsen, John Wulf and Gary Reimer.

LaVerne V. (Hinricksen) Natzel (1927 - 2003)
LaVerne Vivian Natzel was born April 10, 1927, the daughter of Andreas and Bertha Stender Hinricksen. She died Sunday, March 23, 2003 at her home in Jefferson, Iowa at the age of seventy-five.LaVerne was born in Denison, Iowa. She was baptized in Christ on June 19, 1927 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and later confirmed there on April 18, 1943. LaVerne attended country school in Goodrich Township and graduated from the Denison High School in Denison, Iowa.
On October 10, 1948, LaVerne was united in marriage to Vernon Natzel. They lived in Manilla until 1964 and then moved to a farm near Denison. In 1968 they moved to Jefferson, Iowa where she resided until the time of her death.
La Verne was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Jefferson and a former member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. She worked in dietary and laundry at the Crawford County Hospital in Denison and later at the Jefferson Manor as a nurses aide. LaVerne loved housekeeping, sewing and gardening, especially flowers. In her leisure time she loved genealogy, scrap booking and visiting with family and friends.
LaVerne was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Sandra Lee Natzel in infancy, and a brother, Louis Hinricksen. Survivors include her husband, Vernon of Jefferson, three daughters, Sharon Boyers of Columbus, Ohio; Carol Schultz and her husband, Jerry of Lake View; Beverly Stern and her husband, Marvin of Sterling, Illinois, and one son, Howard and his wife Mary of Eagen, Minnesota; seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild; one sister, Helen Hester of Denison; and one sister-in-law, Margaret Hinricksen of Denison; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m., Thursday, March 27, 2003 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Vicar David Lyons officiated the service and grave side rites held at Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison, Iowa. Organist Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for the congregational hymns Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound and What A Friend We Have in Jesus. LaVern A. Peters was born on a farm near Charter Oak, Iowa, Aug. 8, 1919, the son of William and Rosa Bahnsen Peters. When he was six years old the family moved to a farm near Buck Grove and later they moved to Denison. He received his formal education in the rural schools near their home at the Zion Lutheran School in Denison. Following his schooling, he farmed for a time before becoming a truck driver for Bill Boyens.On July 3, 1950, La Vern was united in marriage with Evelyn Fay Savery Groth at Onawa. They made their home in Denison and La Vern was employed with the Crouse Cartage Company. In 1959, LaVern a began his policeman career with the Denison Police Department and was a patrolman for the department for many years. Later in his career he was in charge of meter maintenance. LaVern retired from the force in 1981. Following his retirement, the Peters family continued to reside in Denison. LaVern was widely known for his expertise in clock repair, an occupation be enjoyed throughout his retirement years.
LaVern was stricken at his home early Thursday morning, Aug. 7, 1986, and his death was pronounced a short time later at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 66 years, 11 months and 29 days. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.
Including his parents LaVern was preceded in death by two sisters, Ardella Preul and Marie Peters who died in infancy. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Fay Peters of Denison; one son, David LaVern Peters of Denison; three daughters, Deborah, Mrs. Richard Knowles of Denison, Catherine, Mrs. Duane Jacoby of Denison and Christine, Mrs. Robert Wohlers of Logan; two stepsons, James Groth of Roseville, Minn. and Michael Groth of Carroll; and one stepdaughter, Patricia, Mrs. John A. C. Webster of White Rock, New Mexico; fifteen grandchildren; two brothers, William Peters of Carroll; and three sisters, Edna Kelm, Sadie Hoffmeier and Martha Peters, all of Denison. Also surviving is one aunt, Minnie Evers of Denison; and many nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Aug. 9 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison with the Rev. Donald D. Fraker officiating. Music for the service was provided by Henry Henningsen singing How Great Thou Art and I'm But A Stranger Here. Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist and Darcy Reimers provided special music for the service playing the accordion. Honorary pallbearers included O.H. "Bud" Webb, Ray Fouts, Paul Crouse and William Jahnke. Pallbearers were Donald Stehr, Denny Fineran, Robert Schraeder, Larry Thies, William Knott and Larry Carstensen. Interment was in the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Lawrence E. Busch (1902 - 1973)
Lawrence Ernest Busch, son of John Busch and Dora Burmaster was born April 4, 1902 on a farm near Treynor, la., where he farmed as a young man with his father.He was united in marriage to Ruby Ione Larson of Deloit on Jan. 30, 1922 by the Rev. Fulcorner of Denison. To this union three children were born, a daughter, Bonnie, Mrs. Wilbert Schramm of Winter Haven, Fla., and two sons, Norman of Deloit and Vernon of Des Moines.
In 1944 Lawrence and his wife moved from their farm north of Denison to Denison where they owned and operated two apartment houses until 1968. After his retirement he worked for the City of Denison and as patrol officer for the Denison school system until his admission to the hospital.
Mr. Busch passed away April 4, 1973 at Eventide after an extended illness from brain surgery. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Moore, Mrs. Henrietta Greenwood and Mabel Busch and his wife. In addition to his children he leaves to mourn five sisters, Emmaline Jamieson of San Diego, Calif., Bertha Graham of Reseda, Calif., Mary Schmidt of Boliver, Mo., Velma Von Fecht of Emerson and Cecelia Bees of Council Bluffs. Three brothers George of Grand Island, Neb., Clarence of Persia and Frank of McClelland. He also leaves 10 grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and numerous other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at the Maxwell Funeral Home in Denison with the Rev. Howard Ball officiating. Organ interlude was by Mrs. Jerold Irvin. Interment was in the Kiron Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers: Orville Auen, Alfred Carstens, Hershel Gabrielson, Herman Knief, Raymond Olson and Henry Luscombe. Honorary pallbearers were fellow members of the Denison Police Department.

Lea A. Nelson (1927 - 1991)
Lea Alfred Nelson as born Oct. 15, 1927, the son of William and Ruby Waggoner Nelson. He died Wednesday, March 27, 1991 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa at the age of 63 years.Lea was born on a farm in Sac County near Odebolt, Iowa, and began his formal education in a rural school near his home. He continued his education at the Kiron High School but left school in 1945 for a tour of duty with the United States Navy. After completing his responsibility with the Armed Services, Lea returned to Kiron to finish his education, graduating from the Kiron High School with the Class of 1947. After graduation, he attended a barber college in Des Moines before returning to the Kiron and Odebolt area to serve his apprenticeship for licensing as a barber.
On Aug. 9, 1948, Lea was united in marriage to Ramona Jensen in Omaha, Neb., and were blessed with the birth of two children.
Soon after receiving his barber's license, Lea purchased the barber shop in Schleswig, and served that community for twenty-two years before retiring from his barber shop to enter the construction field. He was engaged in construction for sixteen years of which five years were associated with the Petersen Construction Company in Schleswig. For two years he worked as a security guard for Dubuque Packing, and then for the Schleswig Country Club where he managed the club house for two years working part time the last year.
Lea appreciated sports of all kinds, and participated in golf as an active past time. Civic activities occupied a significant segment of his life and was a member of the town council. Additionally, he served the Schleswig community as Fire Chief and City Clerk and was a member of the board of directors of the Schleswig Golf Course. His concern for the youth of the community was evidenced by his participation as a leader of a local Boy Scout Troop. Additionally, he served as a member of the United Church of Christ's Property Committee. Woodworking was a craft in which he found particular enjoyment with and occupied much of his spare time making furniture for his grandchildren and display items. He was a member of the United Church of Christ, the American Legion, and the V.F.W. in which he participated as a member of the board of directors.
He was preceded in death by his parents. Surviving is his wife, Ramona of Schleswig; one daughter, Linda of Schleswig; and one son, Dan and his wife, Pam, also of Schleswig; three grandchildren; four sisters, Jessie Benson of Kiron, Faye Carlson and her husband, Willard of Kiron, Jean Indorf and her husband, LuVerne of Springdale, Ark., Lynne Wulf of Whiting; and two brothers, William Jr. and his wife, Golden of Kiron, and Robert and his wife, Mary of Tucson, Ariz.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 30, at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, la. with Pastor James Schatz officiating the services and the graveside rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Evelyn Johnson served as organ accompanist for Ruby Kastner's solo renditions of How Great Thou Art and The Old Rugged Cross. The American Legion & V.F.W. Post 3930 Honor Guard served as pallbearers. Leona (Namanny) Bugge (1919 - 1979)
Leona Alice Burr Bugge was born on May 8, 1919, near Charter Oak, Iowa, the daughter of John and Anna Plagge Namanny. She died on Thursday morning, February 15, 1979, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, Iowa, at the age of 59.Leona was raised on a family farm and received her formal education in the rural schools near her home. She was baptized on June 19, 1919, and confirmed on April 9, 1933, in the Lutheran faith, at St. John's Lutheran Church Charter Oak.
On December 3, 1939, Leona was united in marriage to Herbert Kroll. To this union was born a daughter who died in infancy. On April 7, 1968, she was united in marriage to Fred Burr Sr. They worked and lived in various places before making their home near Schleswig when Mr. Burr passed away.
On September 10, 1977, Leona was united in marriage to Walter Bugge at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Ricketts, Iowa. They made their home on a farm in rural Charter Oak.
In addition to her husband Fred and one infant daughter, Leona was preceded in death by her parents and one nephew. Survivors include, her husband Walter of Charter Oak, one step daughter, Karen, Mrs. Don Yates of Galva and one step son Gary of Germany. Also by five step grandchildren, one brother Elmer Namanny of Schleswig, one nephew and one great nephew.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 17, 1979, at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Ricketts. Burial was in the Genesio Township Cemetery near Traer, Iowa. The Rev. Donald Winterrowd officiated at the services.
Pallbearers included Gilbert Nihsen, LeRoy Nelsen, Glenn Deiber, Albrecht Koch, Whip Langholdt and Victor Schwarz.

Leona S. Neddermeyer (1911 - 2003)
Leona Sophia Elsie Neddermeyer was born September 17, 1911 to Julius and Emma Hansen Neddermeyer on a farm near Charter Oak, Iowa. She entered her Heavenly Kingdom on Thursday, December 11, 2003 at the Eventide Nursing Home in Denison, Iowa at the age of ninety-two years, two months and twenty-four days.Leona was baptized by Pastor Amstein on September 18, 1911 and confirmed by Pastor Amstein on March 28, 1926. Following her education in the St. John's Lutheran School, Charter Oak, she worked in many homes as a hired girl.
Leona was a special lady. Her pride and joy was helping others and her families. She enjoyed twenty-eight years of her life helping in the Raymond Kuhlmann household and caring for JoAnn and Alan following the death of Raymond's wife. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, baking and cooking.
She was a lifelong member of St. John Lutheran Church.
Leona was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Christian and Julius and one sister, Viola Pautsch. Those who remain to cherish her memory are one sister, Dorothy Neddermeyer of Charter Oak, several nieces and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, December 15, 2003 at the St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. L.C. Gebhardt officiated the service and grave side rites held at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery in Charter Oak, Iowa. Art Beeck provided the organ and also sang the solo, Lift High the Cross. The congregational hymns were: Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me, What A Friend We Have in Jesus and How Great Thou Art. Ted Butler served as Crucifier. The honorary pallbearers were Wayne & JoAnn Elwell and Alan & Linda Kuhlmann. Those serving as pallbearers were: Scott O'Neal, Brian Butler, Randy Dose, Mark Feller, Joe Peters and Tom Butler. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch served by the Ladies Aid at the St. John Lutheran Church. The Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak was in charge of arrangements.

Leona L. (Jepsen) Nelson (1914 - 2000)
Leona L. Nelson was born on a farm in Hanover Township, Crawford County, Iowa, November 4, 1914, the daughter of Emil and Christina Danielsen Jepsen. She was raised in Crawford County and received her education in Denison, graduation from high school in 1932. She went on to receive, with honors, her Bachelor of Science degree in education from Drake University in August, 1969.On April 13, 1941, Leona was united in marriage with Milton H. Nelson at Denison, Iowa. Their union was blessed with four children; Duane, Steven and twins, Lance and Linda. From 1941 until 1949 they farmed and made their home on two different farms in Stockholm Township. In January of 1949, they moved to Denison where Leona was a homemaker and a housewife.
In 1953 Leona returned to teaching after having taught in rural schools from 1933 to 1941. She then taught 4th grade in Denison for 23 years, retiring in 1977. Leona enjoyed serving her Lord after having accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior just prior to marriage. She was baptized in Black Hawk Lake at Lake View. She taught Sunday School for over 30 years and served as Sunday School superintendent for many years. She was active in women's missionary groups, Vacation Bible School and served as church clerk, treasurer and deaconess. She was a member of the Iowa State Education Association, Iowa Retired Teachers, Denison Christian Women's Club, Crawford County Historical Society and the Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed reading, traveling, word puzzles, gospel music, Bible study, history, genealogy, family get togethers and writing poems for many occasions. She authored one book entitled As the Twig is Bent.
Leona died early Saturday, February 19, 2000, at Saint Joseph Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska. At the time of her death she had attained the age of 85 years, 3 months, 15 days.
Including her parents, Leona was preceded in death, after 58 years of marriage, by her husband, Milton, ten days prior; two sisters, Dorothea Jepsen, Meta Jepsen; one brother, Edward Jepsen and one granddaughter, Stacy Joy Nelson.
Those who remain to cherish her memory include her four children; Duane Nelson and wife, Dot of Papillion, Nebraska, Steven Nelson and wife, Susan of Fayetteville, Arkansas, Lance Nelson and wife, Sandy of Denison and Linda Burlingham of Plainsboro, New Jersey, 11 grandchildren, three great-grandsons, one brother, Irwin Jepsen and wife, Patricia of Shingle Springs, California, one sister, Fredda and husband, John Presenell of Des Moines, Iowa, one sister-in-law, Irene Jepsen of Harlingen, Texas, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, February 22, 2000, at the Denison Baptist Church, Denison, Iowa with the Rev. Art Anderson officiating. Leona's Epilog was read by the Rev. Art Anderson. Music for the service was provided by the congregation singing Because He Lives, Kim Petersen singing, I Know Who Holds Tomorrow and a recording of Thank You played at the close of the service. Mary Jane Petersen served as organist. Honorary bearers included Deanne Hedglen, Kimberly Nelson, Heidi Nelson, Jay Burlingham, Jon Burlingham, Sharla Nelson, Samuel Burlingham, Bonnie Burlingham, Shauna Nelson and Seth Nelson. Casket bearers were James Gustafson, Dan Gustafson, David Nelson, Jerrod Hedglen, Harold Thomason and Jim Niblock. Interment was at the Kiron Cemetery, Kiron, Iowa. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Leonard G. Abbe (1912 - 1981)
Leonard G. Abbe was born on April 26, 1912 in Grant Township, Ida County, Iowa, the son of John and Hertha Marth Abbe. He died on Nov. 11, 1981 at St. Luke's Hospital, Sioux City, at the age of 69.Leonard was raised on a farm in Grant Township. He received his early education in the parochial and rural schools near his home.
On Sept. 20, 1936, Leonard was united in marriage to Stella Meyer in Grant township. Together they made their home on a farm near Schleswig. Leonard farmed all of his working career. After his wife's death and later his retirement he continued to make his home on the farm bear Schleswig.
In addition to his wife, Leonard was preceded in death by his father and one other in infancy. Survivors include, one daughter La Joyce, Mrs. Charles Robinson of Poway, Ca., two grandchildren and two step grandchildren, and his mother, Mrs. Hertha Abbe of Danbury. Also surviving is one brother, Ted of Schleswig, and five sisters, Mrs. Clara Stockfleth of Danbury, Mrs. Irene Paulsen of Ida Grove, Alice, Mrs. Ray Bruhn of Schleswig, Esther, Mrs. Henry Jepsen of Spirit Lake and Lois, Mrs. Ray Scott of Danbury.
Funeral services were held Nov. 14, at 10:30 a.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery. The Rev. Paul Wiegert officiated at the services. Pallbearers were Melvin Schultz, Merlin Stockfleth, Walter Gosch, Edgar Blume, Leon Gosch and Don Bielenberg. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Schleswig.

Leonard J. Abbott (1911 - 1979)
Leonard Joseph Abbott was born Sept. 26, 1911 at Vail, the son of Thomas and Barbara Fremel Abbott. He died June 1, 1979, at the Veterans Hospital,Omaha, Nebr. at the age of 67.Leonard spent his early years on a farm near Vail. He received his formal education at St. Ann's Catholic Schools in Vail. where he subsequently graduated. His family moved to the Charter Oak area in the early 1930's. Leonard worked for other farmers in the area for a period of time. He later served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Upon his release from the military he returned to Charter Oak where he worked as a trucker.
On Aug. 31, 1944 Leonard was united in marriage to Eldene Peterson at Charter Oak. Leonard continued doing long-distance trucking. Later he worked for Crawford County in road maintenance. In 1971 he purchased the service station in Charter Oak, which he has continued to operate. He was a member of the American Legion and the Charter Oak Community and Commercial Clubs.
Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters. Survivors include, his wife Eldene of Charter Oak, three sons, Robert of Omaha, Eugene of Omaha and Kevin at home in Charter Oak. Also by, four grandchildren, one brother Melvin of Council Bluffs and three sisters, Donna Creese of Denison, Dorothy, Mrs. Harold Hansen of Charter Oak and Barbara Johnson of Casper, Wyo.
Funeral services were held June 4, at 10:30a.m. at the United Methodist Church, Charter Oak. The Rev. Dennis Bailey officiated. Burial was in the Charter Oak Methodist Cemetery. Pallbearers included, Kenneth Hicks, Lance Petersen, Dean Vogt, George Wiese, Ed Jochimsen and Leonard Keating Jr. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home.

Leonard W. Namanny (1922 - 1993)
Leonard William Namanny was born October 18, 1922, the son of William and Lena Plagge Namanny. He died on Tuesday, May 25, 1993 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison at the age of seventy years.Leonard was born on a farm in Hanover Township, near Ricketts, Iowa. He was baptized on November 26, 1922 and received his subsequent education in a rural school near his home. On April 2, 1939, Leonard was confirmed in the Lutheran faith. After completing his education, Leonard worked on the family farm.
On February 6, 1943, he was united in marriage to Esther Meggers. The were blessed with the birth of eleven children and farmed in the area until Leonard entered the U.S. Army in 1945. After his discharge from the service, Leonard returned to Crawford County and was subsequently employed by Emil Hildebrandt. He had a tank wagon which he drove for several years before becoming employed at Iowa Beef Processors where he worked for twenty-three years before retiring in 1983. In his spare time, Leonard enjoyed fishing. He was a loving husband and father who was always willing to help his family when they needed him. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Kenneth, one daughter, Barb, and one son, Terry. Survivors include his wife, Esther of Denison; seven sons: Larry and his wife, Verniel of Denison; Don and his wife, Debbie of Kiron; Rick of Denison; Dave and his wife, Sherry of Schaller, Iowa; Ron and his wife, Rose of Mare Island, California; Kevin and his wife, Monica of Denison; Allen and his wife, Holly of Denison; two daughters, Elaine Chapman and her husband, Harold of Arion; and Peggy Kepford and her husband, Larry of Denison. Also, twenty-eight grandchildren, one great-grandchild; two brothers, Wilbert and his wife, Maxine of Kiron; William and his wife, Audrey of Carroll; four sisters; Marcella Peterson and her husband, Melvin of Schleswig, Donna Mae Weed and her husband, Don of Sioux City; Shirley Ahart and her husband, Bill of Denison; La Dene Hickey and her husband, Rene of Jackson, Nebraska; and one sister-in-law Dorothy Namanny of Denison.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, May 28, 1993 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Pastor Kurt Kaiser and Pastor Philip E. Bloch officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for soloist Henry Henningsen singing How Great Thou Art and On Eagle's Wings and congregational hymn What A Friend We Have In Jesus. Honorary Pallbearers were: Christine Namanny, Stephanie Namanny and Heather Namanny. Pallbearers were: Scott Chapman, Stacy Chapman, Mark Namanny, Mike Namanny, Bill Chapman and Mike Ahart. Military Honors were: American Legion Post No. 8, Denison, Iowa. The Walter A. Huebner and Sons' Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Leo N. Bechen (1910 - 1985)
Leo Nichlos Bechen was born on April 14, 1910, at Platte, South Dakota, the son of Nick and Nellie O'Rourke Bechen. He died on Thursday morning, Jan. 24, 1985 at his home in Charter Oak, having attained the age of 74 years.Leo spent his formative years in Platte, South Dakota, He received his formal education in a boarding school in Platte. He farmed with his father and brothers for several years before moving to Iowa in 1932.
On January 6, 1934, he was united in marriage to the former Ellen Odefey at the St. Rose of Lima rectory in Denison. Together they farmed in the Denison and Charter Oak areas. After retirement from farming in 1970, they moved into the Charter Oak community. Leo was a member of the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Charter Oak.
In addition to his parents, Leo was preceded in death by six brothers, Reuben, Frank, Vince, Louis, John and Nick, two sisters, Katherine and May, and twin sisters in infancy.
Survivors include his wife Ellen of Charter Oak; one son Ladean and wife Mary Ann of rural Schleswig; and two granddaughters, Cindy Heese of Moville and Nancy Denker of Denison, Also surviving are five great grandchildren; two sisters, Lena Soboski of Richland and Helen Watkins of Manilla Manor; several nieces and nephews, as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
Mass of Christian burial was held on Jan. 26; at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Charter Oak. Burial was in the S t. Boniface Cemetery near Charter Oak. Father Gene Walding officiated at the services. Mary Daniel served as organist for the Mass, with Eugene Bechen serving as soloist. Hymns for the services included Be Not Afraid and selections for Mass of Christian burial. A parish rosary was recited on Friday evening at 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Serving as pallbearers were Virgil Bechen, Merle Mesenbrink, Ray Bechen, Howard Ehlers, Bill Kane and Dr. Roger Vogt. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Charter Oak.

Leora M. (Bruns) Neumann (1917 - 2002)
Leora Marie Neumann was born May 5, 1917, the daughter of Emil and Anna Beerman Bruns. She died on Saturday, December 7, 2002 at the Reed House in Denison, Iowa at the age of eighty-five.Leora was born in Washington Township, Crawford County, Iowa. She was baptized in Christ on July 22, 1917 at St. John Lutheran Church in Buck Grove, Iowa and later confirmed on March 29, 1931 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. She received her education in a rural school near her home and the Denison Community School.
On February 25, 1940, Leora was united in marriage to Harvey Neumann at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. The couple made their home on a farm near Manilla and were blessed with the birth of three children.
Leora was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and their Ladies Aid. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, cross stitching, flower gardening and baking for her family. In her leisure time, Leora loved visiting with friends and neighbors.
Leora was preceded in death by her parents, a great-grandson, Austin, a brother-in-law, Vernon Neumann, a sister-in-law, Betty Jean Bruns and a niece, Robin Rogers. Survivors include her husband, Harvey of Denison; three sons, Darrell Neumann of Vallejo, California; Lowell Neumann and his wife, Doris of Denison; Verle Neumann and his wife, Leila of Manteca, California; three grandchildren, Tami, Todd and Shawn; four great-grandchildren, Shane, Keaton, Nicholas and Noah; one brother, Leonard Bruns of Bakersfield, California; one sister, Arlene Ruberg and her husband, Ray of Moville; many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m., Thursday, December 12, 2002 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. David Sewing officiated the service and grave side rites held at Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Denison, Iowa. LeRoy A. Nelsen, age 62, of Onawa, Iowa, formerly of Soldier and Ricketts, Iowa, died Monday, July 12, 1999 at Burgess Health Center in Onawa.LeRoy was born November 5, 1936, at Soldier, Iowa, the son of Jalmer and Eunice (Wingate) Nelsen. He was baptized as an infant on January 10, 1937 and confirmed on October 29, 1950, in the Soldier Lutheran Church. He attended elementary and high school in Soldier, graduating in 1954. He farmed near Soldier and later moved to a farm near Ricketts, Iowa. In 1991, he moved to Onawa where he was living at the time of his death. He was a member of the Soldier Lutheran Church in Soldier, Iowa.
Survivors include three sisters and their husbands, Merces and Gale Merrill of Hastings, Nebraska, Joan and Jack Smart of Sheridan, Wyoming, and Vonda and Jim Healy of Orlando, Florida; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 15, 1999, at the Soldier Lutheran Church in Soldier, Iowa, with Rev. Paul E. Anderson officiating. The organist, Mrs. Odilo Ahlers, played He Touched Me. The vocalist, Mr. Gordon Foss, sang My Faith Looks Up To Thee. Honorary bearer was Warren Healy. The casket bearers were Steven Smart, Leon Maas, Mark Smart, David Bruhn, Clayton Swenson and Willis Hansen. Interment was in the Soldier Lutheran Cemetery at Soldier, Iowa, with arrangements by the Pearson Funeral Home, Soldier, Iowa.

LeRoy D. Hamann (1912 - 1971)
Funeral services for LeRoy Hamann of Ricketts were held at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Ricketts on Monday morning, September 6, 1971. Rev. F.A. Wiese officiated. Mrs. Loren Lee was the organist and the congregation sang Asleep In Jesus and My Faith Looks Up To Thee.LeRoy Detlef Hamann, son of Ernst Hamann and his wife Mary Schiernbeck, was born at Schleswig, Iowa on January 29, 1912. He grew up in the Schleswig community.
He was married to Freda Mildenstein on January 26, 1934. Freda died on September 13, 1966. After their marriage, the couple farmed for several years. LeRoy then began working for Crawford County. His employment with the county continued for 30 years.
On April 10, 1970, LeRoy Hamann was married to Itha Sexton. After an illness of several months, LeRoy died unexpectedly on Friday, September 3, 1971 at the Onawa Hospital. He was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church of Ricketts, being instructed and confirmed by Pastor Wiese in May 1959.
He is survived by his widow Itha, three daughters Mrs. JoAnn Hollrah of Omaha, Mrs. Donna Mitten of Kansas City, Missouri and Mrs. Karol Knop of Ricketts, one step-son Larry Sexton of Alabama, his parents Mr. and Mrs. Ernst Hamann of Mitchell, South Dakota, one brother Herbert of Sturgeon, Missouri, two sisters Elsie Harper of Mitchell, South Dakota and Donna Johnson of Plankinton, South Dakota and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers Harry, Carl and Ennis. He attained to 59 years, 4 months and 4 days.
Pallbearers were: Charles Carlson, Alvie Hess, William Kuhlmann, Paul H. Claussen, Wayne Kuhlmann and Wilbert Langholdt. Interment was in Morgan Township Cemetery.
