Viola June (Mesenbrink) Martin (1920 - 1996)
Viola June Martin was born June 4, 1920, the daughter of John and Josephine Fischer Mesenbrink. She died at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa on Sunday, December 1, 1996 at the age of seventy-six.Viola was baptized in Christ on June 27, 1920 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and later confirmed there on March 25, 1934. She received her education in the Denison Community School, graduating with the class of 1938.
On December 4, 1938, Vila was united in marriage to Chester (Chuck) Martin at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison by Rev. C. W. Schmidt. The couple made their home in Denison where Viola was employed by the Montgomery Wards store for five years and by the Denison Utilities for twenty-five years.
Viola was a devoted member of Zion Lutheran Church and their Ladies Aid. She was a loving and caring wife, mother, and grandmother. She enjoyed occupying her leisure time with crafts and socializing with family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include her husband, Chuck of Denison, one son Bernard (Bud) Martin and his wife, Norma of Huntsville, Alabama; one grandson, John Martin and his wife Debbie of Grand Junction, Colorado and one granddaughter, Sarah Martin of Huntsville, Alabama.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 4, 1996 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. Daniel Gifford officiated the service and graveside rites held at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Denison. Karen Hahl provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Henry Henningsen signing "How Great Thou Art" and congregational hymns "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and "I Know That My Redeemer Lives". Honorary pallbearers were: Walt Morrison, Daymon Abbott, Don Uker and Harold Auld. Pallbearers were: Louis Mesenbrink, Merle Mesenbrink, Larry Mesenbrink, Frank Jorgensen, Denis Bergstadt and Lorne North. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid. Kenneth L. Bohlander (abt. 1933 - abt. 1994)
Kenneth L. Bohlander, 61, a retired San Diego insurance executive who was past president of the Independent Insurance Agents Association, died Saturday at Scripps Memorial Hospital-La Jolla after a brief illness. Mr. Bohlander was 61 and lived in San Diego for 26 years.He retired in 1988 as vice president and managing partner of Robson, Cavignac & Associates, a downtown firm specializing in commercial property and casualty insurance.
Mr. Bohlander, a native of Denison, Iowa, served in the Air Force from 1952 to 1956 as a flight instrument trainer. After his discharge, he attended the University of New Mexico, graduating in 1960 with a degree in business administration.
He began his career in the insurance industry in San Francisco, working six years for Fireman's Fund. Before coming to San Diego in 1968, he was employed by a Santa Ana firm for two years.
Mr. Bohlander belonged to the Lions Club of San Diego for 21 years and was active in Toastmasters, the San Diego Tennis and Racquet Club and La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club.
He is survived by Barbara North, his wife of 15 years; a daughter, Julie Bohlander, of Colorado; his mother, Elizabeth Bohlander, of Denison, Iowa; and a brother, Keith Bohlander, of St Joseph, Mo.

Lucille (Kenyon) Hansen (1920 - 1997)
Lucille Hansen was born July 26, 1920, he daughter of Oren and Iris Rounds Kenyon. She died at the Immanuel Medical Center in Omaha, Friday, October 31, 1997 at the age of seventy-seven. Lucille was born in Deloit, Iowa and received her education in the Deloit Community School.On March 27, 1940, Lucille was united in marriage to Elroy Hansen at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. The couple settled on a farm south of Denison and raised their family of three children. The couple remained on the farm until retiring to Denison in 1987.
In her leisure time, Lucille enjoyed socializing with the friends as a member of the Friday Club. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Denison and was an active member of their ladies organization. The couple enjoyed their retirement in Denison, but enjoyed the more temperate climate of southern Texas in the winter.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Eugene Kenyon and one sister, Bonnie Lee in infancy. Survivors include her husband, Elroy of Denison; one son Richard Hansen and his wife, Patsy of Cedar Falls, Iowa; two daughter, Judy Bogen of Ramsey, New Jersey; Lynnda Behrens and her husband, Merritt of Wyckoff, New Jersey; two grandchildren, one great-grandchild; one brother, Harold Kenyon and his wife, Carol of Shenandoah, Iowa; two sisters, Arley Goodwin of Fountain Valley, California; and Emogene Buffinton of Garden Grove, California; and one sister-in-law, Phyllis Kenyon of Kearney, Nebraska.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, November 3, 1997 at the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Denison, Iowa. Elder Ted Morris and Elder Bob Lewis officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens, Denison. Carrie Morris provided the organ accompaniment for the Morrison family singing "In the Garden" and "Because He Lives". Those serviced as pallbearers were: Merritt Behrens, LeRoy Childress, Jason Hansen, Jim Guthmann, Gregg Kenyon and Eric Hansen. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Pastoral Care. Dale Johannsen (1934 - 1988)
Dale Johannsen, 64, died suddenly of a heart attack where he was employed Monday, August 22, 1988, in St. Louis Missouri. Funeral services were held at the Colier Funeral Home at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, August 25, 1988, with Rev. Herbert Riethmeier officiating.Dale was born on a farm in Morgan Township, in 1934 to Theresa (Hansen) Johannsen and the late Allan Johannsen. He was baptized and confirmed in the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. He received his education in the public schools and continued it while he was in the service of his country. On December 8, 1956, he was married to Janet Armer of Vienna, Missouri. He was employed at Jefferson Printing in St. Louis for 15 years and 1 year at Direct Mail Corporation of America.
He is survived by his wife Janet; two sons, Rick and his wife Beth and Steve, both of St. Louis; his mother; two sisters, Lorna Mae and her husband Kenneth Winsor of Charter Oak, and Myrna Kay of Los Angeles, California; one brother, Roger and his wife Edna Mae of Arthur; two grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents.

May Lou (Grill) Evers (1933 - 2005)
May Lou went to be with her Lord on November 7, 2005. Born May Lou Lillie Grill to Werthus and Lillian Grill on May 16, 1933, in rural Crawford County, Iowa. She attended rural schools through eighth grade and attended Schleswig High School, graduating in 1951. She was baptized and confirmed in Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Church (United church of Christ), Schleswig, Iowa.In 1958 she was united in marriage to Everett Evers in Schleswig. To this union were born two children, Mark and Jaye Lynn.
She is survived by her son, Mark of Storm Lake, Iowa, and special friend, Barb Flaherty of Pocahontas; her daughter, Jaye Claussen and husband, Ed of Guymon, Oklahoma; grandchildren, Eric, Kyle and Kayla Evers of Storm Lake; Megan, Malinda (Lindy), and Austin Claussen of Guymon; David and Wife, Kim Claussen of Ida Grove and great-grandchildren, Kaylea and Jaxson of Ida Grove; and sister, Juliann Christie of Schleswig; nieces, nephews, and many friends. Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, Everett, and her brother, Harris Grill.
May Lou lived a life of faith and prayer. She was very involved with community activities and before retiring worked for many years at Re-New It. She was a beautiful woman who made those she cared about feel special. She loved spending time with her family and friends, playing cards, and driving truck.
Funeral services were held Friday, November 11, 2005 at United Church of Christ in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Chris Burtnett officiated the services and grave side rites held at Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Organist Wendy Bumann provided the organ accompaniment for the congregational hymns "Holy, Holy, Holy" and "Onward, Christian Soldiers". Vocalists Keith and Kevin Christie sang, "You'll Never Walk Alone". Those serving as pallbearers were: Neal Nahnsen, Jim Claussen, Mike Korner, Scott Claussen, Bill Benson, and Doug Lyon. Larry Gene Klinker (1945 - 1974)
Funeral services were held for Larry Gene Klinker, 29, of Omaha, formerly of Battle Creek, at 1 p.m. Wednesday, September 11, 1974, in the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. D. Stanley Tyner officiating. Larry passed away suddenly at the University Hospital in Omaha early Sunday morning, September 8, after a brief illness.Organ music was provided by Mrs. John Mickelsen. The hymns, "Rock of Ages" and "Softly and Tenderly Jesus is Calling" were played. Burial was at Mr. Hope Cemetery under the direction of the Christiansen Funeral Home.
Pallbearers were Kendall Furne, Ernest Rickabaugh, James Kollbaum, Tim Duff, Arland Honeywell, and Antone Pirruccello. Following the services, lunch was served in the Social Hall. The chairman, Mrs. Edith Brock was assisted by Doris Campbell, Arlene Rossow, Judy Furne, Pat Grell, Ollie Kelley, Roma Chrisholm, Liz Rice, and Marilyn Gunderson.
Larry Gene Klinker, age 29 years, 6 months, 28 days, was born in Denison, Iowa on February 14, 1945, and was baptized at the Zion Lutheran Church on April 29, 1945 by Rev. C.W. Schmidt. Larry moved with his family to Battle Creek in 1953 and attended Battle Creek Community School. For the past 12 years he was employed in Omaha working the last several years for Roberts Transfer.
He was preceded in death by his step father, Franklin Grohmann on June 9, 1974, to whom he was deeply devoted, also his sister, Judy Kay, and his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer-Malone.
Survivors include, his mother, Mrs. Franklin Grohmann; his father, Walter Klinker of Missouri Valley, Ia. ; 2 brothers, Ronald of Omaha, Robert of Fort Worth, Texas, and Dale of Armona, Calif. ; 4 sisters, (Janice) Mrs. Ed Hedberg, (Joleen) Mrs. Antone Pirruccello of Omaha, Nebr., (Jo Ann) Mrs. LeRoy Kamber of Des Moines, and (Joyce) Mrs. Theodore Parcell of Baton Rouge, La.; also his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Klinker of Denison, Ia. and many other relatives and good friends.

Leora Marie (Petersen) Guhn (1921 - 2000)
Leora Marie, daughter of William H. and Louise B. Lenz Petersen, was born September 21, 1921, near Denison, Iowa. Leora attended country school near Denison and was the youngest person to graduate from Denison High School at age fifteen. After teaching in country schools in Crawford County, she worked in the county superintendent's office.On April 21, 1948, Leora was united in marriage with Lyle E. Gruhn at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Three sons were born to this union. They made their home in the Manilla area. Leora continued to work at the county superintendent's office for a short time before staying home to care for their boys and do the books for Lyle's seed corn business. Lyle died September 7, 1993.
Leora was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla, participating in Vacation Bible School and holding several offices in the Prescilla Guild. She enjoyed the "Helping Hands Club", volunteering her time at the Manilla Manor, working in her yard and flowerbed, and spending time with her grandchildren and many cousins.
Leora had been in failing health since 1997, and on Tuesday September 12, 2000, she died at Manning Regional Healthcare Center in Manning, Iowa. She was 78 years, 11 months and 22 days of age.
Besides her husband and parents, Leora is preceded in death by a brother Raymen Petersen.
She is survived by three sons: Nyle Gruhn and his wife Lynne of Manilla; Garry Gruhn and his wife Linette of Manilla; and Mark Gruhn and his wife Jean of Carroll; seven grandchildren: Katie and Joshua Gruhn; Melissa Gruhn; Eric Hammer; Stephanie Miller; Kimberly Irlmeier; and Heather Brincks; three great-grandchildren: Sam, Sky and Mya Irlmeier; three sisters-in-law Loretta and her husband Mervin Arnold of Manilla, Doris Witt of Manning, Ethel and her husband Leo Seib of Des Moines; a brother-in-law Gene Gruhn of Mesa, Arizona; and by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, September 15, 2000 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla, Iowa. Reverend Timothy Geitz officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Nishnabotna Cemetery in Manilla, Iowa. Marian Joens served as organist for congregational hymn, "Just As I Am" and vocalist Carolann Segebart singing, 'How Great Thou Art" and "My Faith Looks Up To Thee". Those serving as honorary casket bearers were her grandchildren; Katie Gruhn, Melissa Gruhn, Stephanie Miller, Joshua Gruhn, Eric Hammer, Kimberly Irlmeier, and Heather Brincks. Those serving as casket bearers were Art Joens, Bernie Jorgenson, Roland Huebner, Mike Segebart, Mervin Arnold, and Merlin Schmelau. Iola W. Dimig, age 84, died Sunday, April 10, 1994, at Marian Health Center in Sioux City, Ia. Services were held at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton with Pastor Charles Adams officiating. Burial was in Danbury Catholic Cemetery.Iola was born March 8, 1910, on a farm near Denison, the daughter of Eric and Louise (Hartleben) Mesenbrink. She graduated from Denison High School in 1928 and completed a post graduate course in business.
She married Frank Dimig in 1936 at Ute. Frank died February 4, 1987.
Survivors include a son and wife, Bert & Marjie Dimig, Charter Oak; two granddaughters and husbands, Leah and Gary Ortner of Charter Oak and Amy & Korey Meseck of Ute; two grandson, Danny and his wife Stacey Dimig, Charter Oak and Daren Dimig of Battle Creek; and five great-grandchildren, Jamie and Jason Ortner and Derrick, Alyssa and Dylan Dimig.
Iola was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Irene; and an infant brother, Walter.
Pallbearers were Jan Bohlman, Darren Dimig, Ray Friedrichsen, Danny Dimig, Gary Ortner and Korey Meseck.

Keith Mark Johannsen (abt. 1958 - 1991)
Keith Mark Johannsen, 33, died of a brain tumor on Tuesday, Feb. 19 (1991) in a Council Bluffs hospital.Keith was born in Denison and graduated from Schleswig High School in 1975. He attended Fort Dodge Community College and University of South Dakota. He was employed as a desk clerk for Greyhound Bus Lines in Omaha until illness forced his retirement in June of 1990. He had served in the U. S. Navy and was a member of the Timothy Lutheran Church.
Preceding him in death was a sister, Susan, and a brother, Len. Survivors include his parents, Roger and LaJune Johannsen of Council Bluffs, one sister, Sherry Johannsen of Irwin; three brother: Russ of Denison, Jay of Council Bluffs and Lee of Iowa City; and his grandmother, Irene Johannsen of Schleswig.
Services were held at 11:00 a.m. Friday at Timothy Lutheran Church with the Reverend David R. Boone officiating. Burial was at 3 p.m. Friday at the Morgan Cemetery at Schleswig. Funeral arrangements were made by the Beem-Belford Funeral Home.

Laretta Sophia Marie (Arnold) Strissel (1923 - 1999)
Laretta Sophia Marie Strissel was born July 5, 1923, the daughter of Fred and Ella Haase Arnold. She died at her home near Denison, Sunday, April 18, 1999 at the age of seventy-five.Laretta was born on the Arnold family farm south of Denison and was baptized in Christ, September 2, 1923. She later reaffirmed her faith in the Lord through her confirmation vows, celebrated at Zion on March 21, 1937.
She received her education in a rural school near her home. After completing her education, Laretta helped her family on the home farm until November 12, 1939 when she was united in marriage to Fritz Strissel at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison by the Rev. C. W. Schmidt. The couple settled on the Strissel farm where Fritz had been farming since 1933. They were blessed with the birth of four children. In 1985, the couple retired from farming, but remained on the home place.
Laretta, was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who in her leisure time, enjoyed socializing with family and friends at a game of cards but was most pleased to spend time with her family, especially her granddaughters and enjoyed attending school events with them.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two daughters, Judith and Janet; and her husband, Fritz in 1993, and one brother, Elmer Arnold in 1964. Survivors include: two sons, Jerry and his wife, Dorothy of Harlan, Daniel of Denison; three granddaughters, Shannon Strissel of Boone and her fiancée, Aaron Smith of Harlan; Vicki Smith and her husband, Brad of Phoenix, Arizona; Jeri Strissel of Harlan; and one sister-in-law, Phyllis Auen and her husband, Orville of Denison; other relatives and many friends.

Gerald Elvin Lyman (1932 - 2005)
Gerald Elvin Lyman, 73, passed away in his home, surrounded by his family in Grand Junction, Colorado on December 22, 2005 after a brief illness of cancer.He was born in Deloit, Iowa on February 5, 1932 to Merrill Elvin Lyman and Thelma Fern Cose. He attended schools in Crawford County, Iowa and graduated from Schleswig High School, Iowa. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1952 and served in the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1954.
He married his high school sweetheart, Norma Jean Ernst on April 25, 1954. They had the honor of celebrating their 50th Wedding anniversary in 2004 with their family. To this union was born two children, Michele and Gayle. Gerald worked his life in the lumber industry and retired from Boise Cascade in 1992. He was active in the community and belonged to the VFW.
He is survived by his wife Norma, his children Michele (Gene) Crandall and Gayle (Marilyn) Lyman; four grandchildren, Jesse Lyman, Kelly Lyman, Brian Crandall, and Tracy Crandall. Also surviving is Gerald's mother Thelma Lyman of Denison, Iowa; brother Garlyn (Mary) Lyman of LeMars, Iowa; Gailen (Barb) Lyman of Chandler, Arizona; sisters Mavis (Stan) Skow of Mapleton, Iowa; and Linda (Bob) Quandt of Denison, Iowa; and sister-in-law Marilyn Lyman of Danville, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his father Merrill Lyman and his brother Sheldon Lyman.
A celebration of life service was held Tuesday, December 27, at 2L00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church (522 White Avenue, Grand Junction, Colorado) with Reverend Annie Rigo. Burial of Gerald's cremains will follow the service at Memorial Gardens Cemetery with military honors provided by the Grand Valley Combined Honor Guard.

Frances Clara Gloede (1928 - 2000)
Frances Clara Gloede was born February 29, 1928, the daughter of Titus and Lillian Schmidt Gloede. She died in her home at the Reed House in Denison, Friday, June 2, 2000 at the age of seventy-two.Frances grew up on the family farm in Soldier Township, Crawford County, Iowa near Ricketts. She received her early education in both a rural school near her home and Immanuel Lutheran School. She continued her education in the Denison Community High School, graduating with the class of 1948.
In 1950, Frances moved to Omaha, Nebraska and worked for Mutual of Omaha and Woodman of the World insurance companies for fifteen years before moving to Los Angeles, California in 1965. While in California, she worked as a Corporate Loan Officer for the Federal Savings and Loan in Santa Monica, remaining with the institution for thirty years, retiring in 1990.
In her leisure time, she enjoyed painting still life portraits on canvas, crocheting, needle point and quilting, creating beautiful gifts for her family and friends and enjoyed their love as they enjoyed hers. She was kind, loving and caring person who was considerate to her family and others. She lived her faith in her Lord quietly and peacefully, and found strength as she read her Holy Bible.
Frances was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Victor, Wilbur and Alvin; and one sister, Hildagard Bohlmann. Survivors include four sisters: Elvera Carlyle and her husband, Jack of Rapid City, South Dakota; Evelyn Gloede of Denison; Darlene Saunders of Charter Oak; and Una Bell Frehse and her husband, Harold of Denison; one sister-in-law, Phyllis Baak of Charter Oak; and several nephews and nieces.

Marion August Lutz (1932 - 2005)
Marion August Lutz, known to his friends as "Louie" was born October 18, 1932, the son of Paul and Hulda Handelman Lutz. He died at the Denison Care Center Friday, December 9, 2005 at the age of seventy-three.Louie grew up on the family farm in Goodrich Township near Denison. He received his education in a rural school near his home. After completing his education, he helped his family on the farm and hired out to neighboring farmers. In the late 1980's, Louie moved to Denison.
He was a kind and considerate man who enjoyed helping others as needed. In recent years he was involved in delivering food to the elderly through the Meals on Wheels program. In his leisure time, Louie socialized with family and friends and enjoyed an occasional trip to Sloan, where he liked the excitement of spirited games. He also enjoyed playing cards, mostly euchre and pinochle.
He is preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Clarence. Survivors include: five brothers, Arthur of Denison; Alfred of Omaha, Nebraska; Don and his wife, Sylvia of Denison; Vernon and his wife, Janice of Kiron; and Ervin and his wife, Barbara of Denison; nieces, nephews other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services for Emil H. Mesenbrink, 84, were held Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. from St. John's Lutheran church at Charter Oak.Mr. Mesenbrink died Saturday, Sept. 1 (1956) at his home in Charter Oak after a short illness. He had been a life-long resident of that community.
Attending from Ute were Mr. and Mrs. Harold Smith and Rosemary, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Sander and family, Mr. and Mrs. Grover Sander.
Mr. Mesenbrink was Mary and Louis' grandfather.

Johanna (Hendrichsen) Mesenbrink (1875 - 1948)
Charter Oak Times.Mrs. Johanna Mesenbrink, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Hendrichsen, was born in Jackson County, near DeWitt, Iowa, on September 2, 1875. At an early age she moved with her parents to Crawford County. She was baptized and later confirmed in the Lutheran Church, Confirmation taking place on March 26th, 1893.
On September 12, 1894, she was united in marriage to Mr. Emil Mesenbrink. They made their home on a farm in Hanover Township. In 1914 they moved to Charter Oak and have made their home there since. Nine children were born to them, four of them having died in infancy.
Mrs. Mesenbrink had been ailing for some time but her condition was not believed to be alarming until a few days before her death when she was removed to the Carroll Hospital. She did not respond to treatment and medicine and she breathed her last on August 29th (1948) at 2:45 p.m. She had reached an age of 72 years, 11 months, and 27 days.
Her parents, two sisters and two brothers preceded her in death. She leaves to mourn her loss: her husband, Emil Mesenbrink; three sons and two daughters; Rosa (Mrs. Grover Sander) Ute, Iowa; Fred, Charter Oak; Hans, Boone, Iowa; Hilda, (Mrs. Henry Waderich), Sioux City, Iowa; Carl, Charter Oak. She is also survived by two sisters and one brother: Mrs. Julia Jenkens, Mrs. Anna Mesenbrink, and Mr. Peter Hendrichsen, all of Denison, Iowa; also 12 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and host of other relatives and friends.
She received Christian burial on Wednesday afternoon with services at the Sievert Funeral Home and the Lutheran Church, the Rev. W. Schroeder officiating. Interment was made in the Hanover Township Lutheran Cemetery.

Hilda B. (Mesenbrink) Waderich (1903 - 1994)
Hilda B. Waderich was born August 1, 1903, the daughter of Emil and Johanna Mesenbrink. She died Wednesday, April 20, 1994 in Roseburg, Oregon, at the age of 90.Hilda was baptized and later confirmed in 1919 at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hanover Township, Charter Oak, Iowa.
She was united in marriage to Henry Waderich on April 8, 1925 in Ute, Ia. The couple farmed in Monona County until the early 1940's. Hilda moved to Vallejo, Ca. in Nov of 1983 and in Nov 1993 to Roseburg, Or.
She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Sioux City and at the present time a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Walnut Creek, Ca.
Hilda was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Henry in Dec of 1982; one sister, Rosena; seven brothers, Frederick, Hans, Carl, Gerhardt and three in infancy. Survivors include nephews: Dale Waderich and August Waderich, one sister-in-law, Bernice Mesenbrink; nieces: Viola Ronfeldt, Mary Jane Smith, Madeline Hazard, Charlotte Heard, Dorothy Champ, Evelyn DeMoss, Lois Jean; and nephews: Louis Waderich, Louis Sanders, Harold Mesenbrink, Bernie Mesenbrink and David Mesenbrink.

Mary Ann (Hamann) Kragel (1943 - 1992)
Mary Ann Kragel was born on October 31, 1943, the daughter of Herbert and M. Ella Thomsen Hamann. She died at her home in Denison, Iowa of natural causes on Sunday, June 21, 1992 at the age of 48 years.Mary Ann was born in Battle Creek, Iowa and grew up in Schleswig where she was baptized a Christian and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. She received her education in the Schleswig Community Schools and graduated from the Schleswig High School with the Class of 1961.
After completing her education, Mary Ann was employed by the Mutual of Omaha Insurance Company until she was united in marriage to Larry Kragel on July 8, 1962 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. The couple settled in Charter Oak and were blessed with the birth of two children.
Mary Ann worked for World Wide Meats and Farmland Industries, for a combined employment in the meat processing industry for more than fifteen years. She subsequently operated the Barnswallow Antique Mall, a career she enjoyed and one lasting for several years. She was a loving and caring mother having a quality that has indelibly influenced the lives of her children. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak.
She was preceded in death by her mother, her father and her step-father, Herman Christians. Survivors include one daughter, Kimberly K. Kragel of Boulder, Colorado and one son, Jason Edward Kragel of Denver, Colorado; her step-mother, Esther Hamann of Columbia, Missouri, her maternal grandmother, Anna Thomsen of North Hollywood, California and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 24, 1992 at the St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, Iowa. Vicar Patrick Sparling officiated the service. Art Beeck provided the organ accompaniment for soloist Henry Henningsen singing "How Great Thou Art," "Just as I Am, Without One Plea" and "The Lord's Prayer." Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Walter A. Huebner and Sons' Funeral Home in Charter Oak.

Walter W. Kortmann Jr. (1936 - 1985)
Walter W. Kortmann Jr. was born on November 21, 1936, on a family farm in Crawford County, Iowa, the son of Walter and Esther Briggle Kortmann, Sr. He died on Thursday, July 11, 1985 at the Clearfield Hospital in Clearfield, Penn., at the age of 48.Walter spent his formative years on his family's farm in Crawford County. He received his early education at St. Paul's Lutheran School, Hanover Township. He graduated from the Charter Oak High School in 1954.
Walter was united in marriage to the former Elaine Marth on August 31, 1956, at the Friedens Evangelical and Reform Church in Schleswig. Together they made their first home in Sioux City where Walter was employed by Kaplon Wholesale Grocers and later by Amour and Company. In 1958 they moved to the Schleswig community. Walter began his employment with Farmland Foods in Denison in 1959. In 1968 they moved to the Kortmann family farm east of Ricketts where he started a registered Angus operation. He was a member of the Iowa National Guard from 1954 to 1962. He was currently serving as vice-chairman and chief steward of U.F.C.W. Local 440 at Farmland in Denison.
Walter was preceded in death by his father Walter, Sr. and one sister La Verna Wiegel. Survivors include his wife Elaine of Schleswig, three daughters, Penny, Mrs. Joe Ewoldt of Charter Oak, Roxanne, Mrs. Russell Wray and Sheila Schwitters both of Denison, two grandsons, Jeremy Joseph and Dustin William, and one granddaughter, Jessica Elaine. Also surviving is his mother, Esther Kortmann of Schleswig, and four sisters, Alice, Mrs. Melvin Alberts of Hooper, Nebr., Paula, Mrs. Carl Ruchti of Ida Grove, Dorothy, Mrs. Art Lutz of Denison, Wilma Gundy of El Dorado Springs, Mo., as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Monday, July 15, 1985, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hanover Township. Interment was in the St. Paul's Cemetery. The Rev. S.W. Holstein officiated at the services and graveside rites. Joyce Green served as organist for the services with Art Beeck serving as soloist. Hymns for the services included "I'm But a Stranger Here," and "How Great Thou Art" with "Rock of Ages" as the congregational hymn. Serving as honorary pallbearers were John Simon, Donovan Brink, Robert Alberts, Robin Marth, Robert L. Hanson, and Paul David Ruchti. Serving as pallbearers were Paul Edward Briggle, George Reitano, Jeff Kloewer, Lloyd Carlson, Chris Sands, and Arnold Grote. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Maxine (Voss) Kruger (1931 - 2002)
Maxine Kruger was born August 4, 1931, the daughter of John and Hanna Jurgensen Voss. She died Friday, May 10, 2002 at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa at the age of seventy.Maxine was born in Schleswig, Iowa. She was baptized in Christ, October 9, 1931 and confirmed in the Lutheran faith March 25, 1945 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. After completing her education in a rural school in Goodrich Township, she helped on the family farm and at the age of eighteen, Maxine worked as a housekeeper for John and Mabel Rattenborg. She later cooked at the Jo Mart Steak House in Denison for many years.
On March 24, 1952, Maxine was united in marriage to Leslie Kruger at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison by Rev. Carl W. Schmidt. The couple made their home on a farm near Vail until moving to Maxine's family farm near Schleswig. The couple also farmed near Wall Lake for a few years before moving to Denison in 1961.
Maxine was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and their Ladies Aid. She loved crocheting, sewing and cooking for her family. She also loved the challenge of word search books, socializing and playing Bingo at Eventide.
Maxine was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Erwin and Gilbert Voss. Survivors include her husband, Leslie of Denison; four daughters, Shirley Van Sickler and her husband, Dennis of Ida Grove; Annette Kruger; Susan Jensen and her husband, Mark; Marilyn Kruger, all of Denison; ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild; two sisters-in-law, Marvella Voss of Schleswig and Loretta Voss of Yankton; South Dakota;·other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, March 13, 2002 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. David Sewing officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig, Iowa. Organist Karen Kahl provided the organ music for Eldon Hardekopf singing "On Eagle's Wings" and congregational hymns "Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me" and "Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound". Pallbearers were: Brandon Van Sickler, Shae Leigh Jensen, Brandi Van Sickler, Heather Jensen, Garrett Kruger, Megan Jensen, Derek Jensen and Bobbie Weber. Pallbearers were: Bryan Van Sickler, Brett Van Sickler, David Bannister; Jeff Sharkey, Chris Weber, Jack Voss and Lodean Voss. The family invited everyone at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Robert Lewis Heckmann (1931 - 2005)
Robert Lewis Heckmann was born at Schleswig, Iowa, October 31, 1931, the son of August and Anna Mesenbrink Heckmann. He was raised there and received his education in the local rural schools. During the Korean War, from February of 1952 until December of 1953, Robert served his country as a Corporal in the United States Army.On May 6, 1956, Robert was united in marriage with Georgia Marie North at the United Presbyterian Church in Denison, Iowa. Their union was blessed with one daughter, Cynthia. They made their home on the farm where Robert farmed, and in conjunction with farming, was employed for a time with Jahnke Implement in Denison. Robert farmed until retiring in 1993 and in 1996, he and Sally moved to Denison.
Although farming was his life's work and passion, in his spare time Robert enjoyed fishing, being outside, golfing, playing cards, socializing with friends and family, especially enjoying his grandsons, bowling in the Men's Bowling League, and following his beloved St. Louis Cardinals. He will also be remembered as an excellent mechanic with the ability to repair most machinery and vehicles. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Denison and the American Legion Post 8, Denison, Iowa.
Robert died early Wednesday, November 16, 2005, at Bergan Mercy Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska. At the time of his death he had been blessed with 74 years, 1 month and 15 days.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, August and Anna Heckmann and two brothers, Marvin and Edward Heckmann.
Those remaining to cherish his memory include his daughter, Cynthia and husband, David Rickert of Richland, Washington; two grandsons, Matthew Rickert of Ames, Iowa, and Jared Rickert of Cheney, Washington; special friend and companion for 16 years, Sally Carstens of Denison, Iowa; three brothers and their spouses, Bill and Delores Heckmann, Dick and Jean Heckmann and Ronnie and Elaine Heckmann, all of Portland, Oregon; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, November 19, 2005, at the United Presbyterian Church in Denison, Iowa with the Rev. Brian K. Rihner officiating. Music for the service included two congregational hymns, "God Be with You" and "Just a Closer Walk with Thee" with Ann Voggesser serving as organist. Pallbearers included Dan Haase, Mike McMinemee, James Werkmeister, Byron Hoffmeier, Rick Rasmussen and Roger Rasmussen. Military Honors were provided by the American Legion Post 8, Denison, Iowa. Interment was at Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison, Iowa. Following the interment all were invited to return to the church for a luncheon prepared and served by the United Presbyterian Women. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Norman Hans Meseck (1945 - 1987)
Norman Hans Meseck, son of Henry H. and Vera A. Hansen Meseck, was born at Charter Oak, Iowa, June 14, 1945. He was baptized July 8, 1945, by the Rev. H.A. Wagner.Norman was raised on the family farm and attended the parochial school in Hanover Township and the Charter Oak-Ute Schools. On March 23, 1959, he was confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hanover Township, by the Rev. Martin H. Leedahl. He was graduated from the Charter Oak-Ute High School with the class of 1963. From 1964, until March of 1966, Norman attended the Personnel Training Institute in Omaha, Neb., and was employed at Archer Petroleum there.
In the spring of 1966, he moved to Florida and later to Ohio. In the fall of 1966, Norman moved to Los Angeles, Calif., where he was employed with the May Company. He then was employed for many years with the Craig Corporation in Compton, Calif.
Norman became ill in May of 1986, when a malignancy was discovered, and since that time was unable to work. He died Saturday afternoon, July 4, 1987, at the Los Angeles County, University of Southern California Medical Center in Los Angeles, Calif. At the time of his death he was 42 years and 20 days of age.
Norman was preceded in death by his father, Henry Meseck, June 9, 1987. He is survived by his mother, Vera Meseck of Ricketts; one brother, Allan Meseck and his wife, Patricia, of Charter Oak; three sisters, Julie Meseck of Omaha, Neb., Cynthia and her husband, Richard Lauritsen of Fremont, Neb., and Diane and her husband, David Berens, of Superior, Neb.; five nieces, Theresa Meseck, Tracy and Stephanie Lauritsen, and Sarah and Laura Berens; and two nephews, Timothy and Thomas Meseck; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Memorial services were held at 2 p.m., Saturday, July 18, 1987, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hanover Township, with the Rev. S.W. Holstein officiating. Music for the service was provided by St. Paul's Adult Choir singing "How Great Thou Art" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" with Rachel Greene serving as pianist for the choir. Organist for the services was Penny Ewoldt. Interment was in the St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Hanover Township. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Tony Albert Ladehoff (1959 - 1994)
Tony Albert Ladehoff was born July 13, 1959, the son of Albert and Elsie Hollander Ladehoff. He died at Council Bluffs, on Thursday, June 16, 1994 at the age of thirty-four years.Tony was born in Denison, and received his education in a Council Bluffs Public School. After receiving his education he entered the United States Army for a short time before moving to Fort Morgan, CO, where he worked in various oil fields.
While in Fort Morgan Tony was united in marriage to Cindy Asklin. In September of 1993, Tony returned to Council Bluffs and was working for a roofing company. Tony enjoyed fishing and the talent of tattooing.
Survivors include three children, Christina and Jason of Fort Morgan, CO, and Cody of Manning; his parents, Albert and Elsie of Denison; six brothers, Allen Ladehoff and his wife, Elizabeth of North Carolina; Albert Lee Ladehoff of Spirit Lake; Robin Ladehoff and his wife, Janet of Irwin; Troy Ladehoff and his wife, Dorian of Gladstone, MO; John and Joe of Denison; three sisters, Joyce Stein and her husband, Warren of Sherman, South Dakota; Mary Kay Staley and her husband, Patrick of Lincoln, NE; and Brenda Ladehoff of Denison; also many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 20, 1994 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison, with Dr. Edward Peterson officiating the service and grave side rites held at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Denison. Dennis G. Carstensen (1946 - 2002)
Dennis G. Carstensen ended his fight with cancer on the evening of May 13, 2002 at home with his family. A memorial service was held Monday, May 20 at 3:00 p.m. at Alden-Waggoner Funeral Chapel. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of the funeral chapel.Born February 20, 1946 in Denison, Iowa, Dennis was the eighth of eleven children born to Julius and Anna Carstensen. The family moved to Denison in the early 1950s. While in high school Dennis was a champion pole-vaulter for the track team. He set the school record for the highest jump, 12 feet 5 1/2 inches; a record held for over twenty years. Dennis graduated from Denison High School in 1964. After high school Dennis worked at the local grain company until 1965 when he decided to join his brothers in the U.S. Marine Corps. Dennis served in the Marines for three years, spending 12 months in Vietnam.
Dennis married Carma R. Lee February 17, 1968 in Rupert, Idaho. The couple moved to Boise a year later when Dennis began an apprenticeship with Trus Joist. Dennis and Carma enjoyed dirt bike racing and other outdoor activities. Shortly after the completion of his apprenticeship, their daughter Tina was born. In the early 1980s, Dennis started his own business, Economy Welding and Machine. After closing his business, Dennis worked as a machinist and welder for MK Rail Division, now known as Boise Locomotive.
In 1993 Dennis met Gaylene Gohn and her children Angela, Charles, and Janessa. Dennis and Gaylene were married December 1, 1995. From this union, the couple had three children, TJay, Theodore, and Denisha. Dennis continued his lifelong loves of camping, hunting, and fishing with his family. In 1997 Dennis was diagnosed with a brain tumor. The cancer spread over the following year.
He is survived by his wife Gaylene; former wife Carma Pirrong; children Tina Curtis, Angela and Charles Jones, Janessa Gohn, and TJay, Theodore, and Denisha Carstensen; granddaughter Taryn Curtis; twin brother Dean and wife Loraina of Boise, Norman and wife Mary of Ida Grove, Iowa, sisters Bonitta Fineran and Patricia and Dennis Plagge of Denison, Iowa, and Audrey and Doug Broome of Waxhaw, North Carolina; numerous nieces and nephews; extended family and close friends Herb Hurlbert, Mac Hall, Betty Gohn, Patricia Gohn, Rod Corn, Bob and Loretta Gibbish, Jason Koch, Lisa and Marco Bates and children.
Dennis is preceded in death by his parents, Julius and Anna, four brothers, Johnny, Raymond, Gerald, and Clarence, and his sister Joan.

Myrna Alice (Yankey) Mohr (1936 - 1989)
Myrna Alice Mohr, the daughter of Lloyd and Laura Alice Hamblin Yankey, was born on February 10, 1936 near Vail, Iowa, and died on July 16, 1989 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa at the age of 53 years.Myrna grew up near Vail, attending a rural school and later the Westside School, graduating with the class of 1954. She furthered her education at St. Anthony School of Nursing at Carroll, Iowa, graduating as a Registered Nurse. She was employed at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital for a number of years.
On September 7, 1957, Myrna and Roger Mohr of Schleswig, Iowa were united in marriage at the United Presbyterian Church in Vail. To this union three sons were born. Myrna and Roger farmed for two years near Schleswig, before moving to Vail, where she was involved with the family business, serving as office manager. She enjoyed raising many kinds of flowers and also doing cross stitchery. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Vail at the time of her death.
Preceding her in death were her father, Lloyd Yankey and an infant sister. Survivors include her husband, Roger; her three sons: Eugene Mohr and his wife Karen of Vail; Martin Mohr and his wife Betty of Westside and Gaylen Mohr of Westside. Also surviving is one granddaughter, Lindsey Mohr of Westside; her mother, Mrs. Lloyd Yankey of Vail;·two sisters: Janet and her husband Richard Lansink of Ida Grove and Ruth and her husband Royce Noelck of Vail; her mother-in-law, Mrs. Henrietta Mohr of Denison and her step-grandmother, Gladys Yankey of Missouri Valley.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 19,1989 at the United Presbyterian Church in Vail, Iowa. Rev. Richard J. Shaffer officiated at the services with interment in the Vail Cemetery. Mr. Kevin Freese was organist and Henry Henningsen was soloist. Selection was "Nearer My God to Thee." Serving as pallbearers were Wesley Stoelk, Ralph Gehlsen, Kevin Pester, Gary Haverman, Ronald Ertz and Leonard Walde. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa.

Arnold Henry Jepsen (1930 - 2001)
Arnold Henry Jepsen, 70, of Schleswig died Monday January 15, 2001 at the Morningside Care Center in Ida Grove.Arnold was born April 20, 1930 near Charter Oak on the family farm, the son of Edward P. and Elsa (Beeck) Jepsen. He received his education at Hanover Number 5 School.
On February 11, 1951, Arnold was united in marriage to Florence Hecht at the Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Church in Schleswig. The couple made their home on the family farm until he entered the United States Army in April of 1953. While serving his country, he was a medic stationed in Germany during the Korean War. After returning home in 1955, Arnold worked for Hugo Ernst and Stanley Baker. In 1959, the couple moved to Galva and farmed until moving back to Schleswig where he worked for Feeder's Supply for 29 years, retiring in 1995. Arnold was a member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, the American Legion and the Community Club. He loved his family and enjoyed fishing and playing cards.
Survivors include his wife, Florence, of Schleswig; two daughters, Carole Johnson (husband: Christian) of Coloma, Wisconsin, and Lori Outhier (husband: Philip) of Coon Rapids, Iowa; three grandchildren, Christian J. Johnson Jr., Matthew Arnold Johnson and Shelby Lynn Outhier; two brothers, Edward F. Jepsen (wife: Dorothy); Fred D. Jepsen (wife: Shirleen), all of Charter Oak; three sisters, Norma Henningsen (husband: Marlo), of Denison; Leanna Hopp (husband: Donald), of Charter Oak; Marjorie Flink of Lincoln, Nebraska, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one infant sister, Deloris, and one brother-in-law, Robert Flink.

Military honors were American Legion Post No. 645, Schleswig, Iowa. Howard Alfred Ewoldt (1954 - 2001)
Howard Alfred Ewoldt was born January 8, 1954, the son of Erlin and Caroline Schwartz Ewoldt. He died Saturday, May 12, 2001 at the St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of forty-seven.Howard was born in Denison, Iowa and received his education in various schools in southwest Iowa, graduating from the Harlan High School in 1973. He worked for Midwest Steel in Atlantic, Iowa, later for IBP in Sioux City and subsequently at IBP in Denison. Howard also worked for Dubuque Pack for several years and Launderville Construction.
He was united in marriage to Laura Barrett of California, in Denison, Iowa. This union was blessed with the birth of one daughter, Janae. Later Howard was married to Carol Hines Spahn. Howard enjoyed helping his family put in farm fences. At the time of his death he was supervisor of shipping and receiving at Custom Ribs in Denison.
Preceding him in death was his father, Erlin in 1996. Survivors include one daughter, Janae Mallory and her husband, Robert of Council Bluffs and a grandchild to arrive in September; his mother, Caroline Ewoldt of Denison; one sister, Irene Ewoldt of Harlan; three brothers, Delbert Ewoldt of Council Bluffs; Joe Ewoldt and his wife, Penny of Vail; Earl Ewoldt and his fiancée, Michelle Hahn of Breda; one stepsister, Adella Farley and her husband, Larry of Manilla; two aunts, Mary Ewoldt of Rapid City, South Dakota; Margaret Holmes of Denison; also three nieces, four nephews, numerous cousins and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 16, 2001 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa. Rev. David Loeschen officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig, Iowa. David Ewoldt provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Penny Ewoldt singing "Count Your Blessings" and "In the Garden." Pallbearers were: Jonney Ehricks Jr., Norman Gurney, John Greder, Greg Brown, Gary Wieck and Sid Stolz. Donna Mae Hoyt (1926 - 2002)
Donna Mae Hoyt, 76, of St. Petersburg, Florida, died September 23, 2002 at Palms of Pasadena Hospital. Donna was born in Schleswig, Iowa on August 27, 1926 and graduated from Schleswig high school in 1945. She moved to Florida in 1949. She was a retired medical assistant and a Lutheran. Memorial services were held September 25, 2002 at Memorial Park Funeral Home, St. Petersburg.Survivors include two sons, William Henzler and Gilbert Henzler, both of St. Petersburg; two daughters, Eileen Stafford, St. Petersburg, and Kathleen Reese, Tallahassee; a brother, Russell Bielenberg, Tempe, Ariz.; and a sister, Beverly Christiansen, Schleswig; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Edward Marquardt (1923 - 2001)
Edward Marquardt was born June 16, 1923 on the family farm, in Crawford County, south of Schleswig. His parents were Edward and Emma Jepsen Marquardt. He passed away at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison on July 25, 2001.Edward was baptized April 30, 1924 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. He was confirmed on Palm Sunday 1938 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. He attended a rural school in Otter Creek Township.
On Jnuary 20, 1946 he married Darlene E. Kuhlmann at St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. They farmed and raised seven children in Crawford and Ida counties. After retiring from the family farm south of Schleswig in January 1992 he and Darlene moved to a home on Elm Street in Schleswig. He worked part-time at IBP for a couple of years after his retirement from the farm.
Edward was an honest, hardworking man and he was a good neighbor, husband and father. he loved farming and especially enjoyed raising livestock, he also enjoyed visiting and playing cards with family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Helen Cassens, Lenora Nehring, twin brother Edgar, one son-in-law, Steven Crum and one granddaughter, Amanda Dirks.
He is survived by his wife Darlene of Eventide, his children: Edward Marquardt and his wife Shirley of Sioux City, Rose Marquardt of Des Moines; Marsha Crum of Denison; Michael Marquardt and his wife Cindy of Boone; Wanda Corbin and her husband Marty of Defiance Jean Schmidt and her husband Jim of Schleswig; Lorna Desy and her husband Gary of Denison; Fifteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, July 28, 2001, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Shleswig with Rev. Merle Mahnken officiating the service and grave side rites. Nancy Bielenberg served as organ accompanist for the congregation hymns: "What A Friend We Have In Jesus", "Just As I Am, Without One Plea" and "Rock of Ages, Cleft For Me". Honorary Pallbearers were" Sherri Marquardt, Megen Marquardt, Melanie Vorsten, Emmalie Corbin, J'Lynn Schmidt, Jackie Schmidt and Trisha Dirks. Those serving as pallbearers were: Edward R. Marquardt, Nicholas Marquardt, Shawn Corbin, Jamos Schmidt, Steve Vorsten, Jace Schmidt, Steven Crumm, Nick Desy, and Nate Desy. Following the committal service at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig, the Immanuel Ladies Aid prepared a lunch for those attending the service. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of the arrangements.

Edwin Paul Hopp (1922 - 2003)
Edwin Paul Hopp was born January 20, 1992, the son of Leo and Caroline Rix Hopp. He died Wednesday, May 14, 2003 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.Edwin was born on a farm near Charter Oak, Iowa and baptized at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hanover Township. He attended parochial school and was confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Soldier Township, Charter Oak.
On January 6, 1946, Edwin was united in marriage to Florence Knop at Immanuel Lutheran Church. After farming for one year on land west of Schleswig, they moved to the family farm one mile north and one mile west of Ricketts. While enjoying their years of farming, Edwin and Florence were blessed with five children. They retired in 1984 and continued to make it their home.
As a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Edwin held various church offices and was an active member of the Lutheran Laymen's League. As a former member of 4-H, he encouraged his children in 4-H and the Schleswig Calf Show. Edwin was a member of the board of Directors for Farmer's Savings Bank of Ricketts, Schleswig School Board and Crawford County Beef Producers. In his spare time, Edwin enjoyed fishing, hunting and reading. He also enjoyed bowling, especially in his earlier years.
Edwin was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Gladys; and a brother, Loren. Survivors include his wife, Florence of Charter Oak, Iowa; one son, Bradley and his wife, Carol and their children, Katrina and Jedediah of Baldwin, Wisconsin; four daughters, Diane Witt and her husband, Merle and their children, John and Ann of Arcadia, Iowa and Emily Dieter and her husband, Chris and great-grandchild, Caroline, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Sandra Hammerlind and her son, Chad of St. Paul, Minnesota; Connie Souza and her husband, William and their son, Wade of Joplin, Missouri and daughter, Jaime of Baldwin, Wisconsin; and Jennifer Koegel and her husband, Mark and their children, LaKrista and Bradley of Turtle Lake, Wisonsin; also two sisters, Mildred Bohlmann of Schleswig, Iowa and Lavina Krenmeyer of Seymour, Illinois; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, May 19, 2003 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Soldier Township, Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. Eugene Ernst officiated the service and grave side rites held at the church cemetery. EveVonne Muff provided the organ accompaniment and sang How Great Thou Art" and congregational hymns "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God" and Abide With Me! Fast Falls the Eventide". Those serving as pallbearers were: Chad Hammerlind, Jedediah Hopp, Bradley Koegel, Wade Souza, Brian Hopp and John Witt. Elna Anna Agnes (Ehler) Zeitler (1923 - 2002)
Elna Anna Agnes Zeitler was born May 1, 1923, the daughter of Martin and Alma Marguarite Cohrt Ehler. She died Wednesday, June 12, 2002 at the Willow Dale Care Center in Battle Creek, Iowa at the age of seventy-nine.Elna was born in Ida Grove, Iowa and was baptized in Christ and later confirmed on March 21, 1937 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grant Township. She received her education in the Grant Township No. 6 School.
On September 19, 1945, Elna was united in marriage to Hilbourne "Joe" Zeitler in Sioux City, Iowa. The couple settled on the family farm northwest of Schleswig and were blessed with the birth of three children. After the death of Joe in 1972, Elna remained on the farm until five years ago, when she purchased a home in Arthur. She entered the Willow Dale Care Center in 2000 due to failing health.
Elna was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. She enjoyed crocheting, making quilts, collecting owls, and vegetable and flower gardening. Elna also loved to travel, especially with the Emerald Club from various banks. She was able to travel to Germany, which was Elna's dream for many years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one brother-in-law, Raymond Hinkley. Survivors inclue two sons, Denis Zeitler of Edwards, Missouri; Mario Zeitler of Noxon, Montana; one daughter Deanna Thies and her husband, Rudy of Arthur; four grandchildren, Courtney Hyland of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Dereck Zeitler of Madison, South Dakota; Nicholas Thies and Nicole Thies, both of Arthur; one brother, Orlan Ehler and his wife, Cathy of Battle Creek; one sister, Evelyn Hinkley of Apache Junction, Arizona; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, June 14, 2002 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Lee R. Mentink officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Marlene Hight provided the service music of "Nearer, My God, to Thee", "Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art". Those serving as pallbearers were: Wayne Hinkley, Dereck Zeitler, Nicholas Thies and Dean Rehm. Florence E. (Wilken) Kyle (1924 - 1996)
Florence E. Kyle, 71, Sioux City, Iowa, died Tuesday, January 16, 1996, at the home of her son in Sioux City following an extended illness. Services were held Friday, January 19, 1996, at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with the Rev. Alex T. Washington officiating. Burial was at Graceland park Cemetery.Mrs. Kyle was born December 29, 1924, in Schleswig, Iowa, the daughter of Carl J. and Anna (Meyer) Wilken. She graduated from Schleswig High School in 1942 and Morningside College in 1946.
She married Carl A. Kyle on June 15, 1947, in Schleswig. She had been a resident of Sioux City the last 48 years. She taught music and various other subjects in public schools in the Siouxland area for several years. She retired in the early 1980's.
Mrs. Kyle was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. She was an active volunteer with the Red Cross and the YWCA for several years.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Don and his wife, Blenda Kyle of Houston, Txas, and Eugene Kyle of Sioux City; a daughter, Georgene Obert of Santa Clair, California; a brother, Vernie Wilken of Denison, Iowa; two sisters, Irene Bloom of Omaha, Nebraska, and Luetta and her husband, Jack Wabschall of Littleton, Colorado; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Paul C. Kyle in infancy.

Francis LaVerne Quandt (1920 - 1977)
Funeral services for Francis L. Quandt were held Monday, Feb. 7, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Denison, with Father Lloyd W. White officiating. Interment was made at St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery, Charter Oak, with full military rites at the cemetery. Pallbearers included nephews, Eugene Quandt, David Quandt, Danny Quandt, Craig Quandt, Jene Quandt and Jerry Namanny.Francis LaVerne Quandt died Feb. 3, 1977 at Denison, at the age of 56. He was born Feb. 29, 1920 the son of Charles and Ann Quandt at Charter Oak. As a young boy he was raised and educated in Charter Oak, attending the sisters school at St. Boniface.
On Feb. 15, 1943 he was united in marriage to LaRue Ella Keller at Charter Oak. Mr. Quandt farmed for 19 years in Crawford County before moving to Schleswig in 1958. At the time of his death he was employed in Denison.
Survivors include, his wife LaRue of Schleswig, two daughters, Mrs. Tom (Maxine) Murphy, Dunlap; Marjorie E. Quandt, Omaha, Nebr.; three sons, Ronald Quandt, Dunlap; Richard Quandt, Schleswig; and Russell Quandt, at home in Schleswig, also by four grandchildren.
Six brothers, Paul Quandt, Carroll; Harold Quandt, Carroll; Robert Quandt, Council Bluffs, Norman Quandt, Carroll; Donald Quandt, Carroll; and James Quandt, Westside, by three sisters, Mrs. Raymond (Marcella) Kluver, Charter Oak; Mrs. Romanan (Evelyn) Jenkins, Kiron; and Mrs. Albert (Dorothy) Kluver of Carroll. Also by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Quandt, of Charter Oak.

Gail Margaret (Schlosser) Schmidt (1928 - 1977)
Gail Margaret Schmidt was born on May 26, 1928, at Madison, Minnesota, the daughter of Henry and Hilda Schlosser. She died early Friday morning, May 6, 1977 after a long illness at Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, at the age of 48 years, 11 months and 10 days.As a young girl, she was raised and educated in Madison, Minnesota. She graduated from the Madison High School. Gail continued her education by attending the University of Minnesota at St. Paul, graduating from the school of X-Ray and Laboratory Technology.
On November 10, 1951, Gail was united in marriage to D.L. Schmidt at Madison, Minnesota. To this union, four sons were born. Together with her husband, they made their home in Schleswig, Iowa.
Gail was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and was confirmed here on January 17, 1960. She was a member of the Immanuel Ladies Aid and at present she served as president, and has served on the Library Board in Schleswig. For many years she has devoted much time to the Cub Scouts serving as a Den Mother and in various other capacities.
She was preceded in death by her mother in 1966 and one sister, Dorothy, in 1975.
Survivors include, her husband, Dr. D.L. Schmidt of Schleswig, four sons, Fred and his wife Barbara of Sioux City, Bill of Sheldon, Bob of Brookings, South Dakota and Don at home in Schleswig. Also by her father Henry Schlosser of Madison, Minnesota, and two brothers, Wayne Schlosser of Rice Lake, Wisconsin and Don of Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Funeral services were held Sunday, May 8, 1977, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig with Rev. Theodore Letzring officiating. Mrs. Sharon Thompson was organist and the congregation sang "Rock of Ages" and "Asleep in Jesus". Burial was in Morgan Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers: Milt Wassgren, E.W. Claussen, William Petersen, Heinz Behnke, M.U. Broers, Bob O'Brien, Duane Goode and Edmund Hamann.

Frieda (Meents) Bartholomew (1920 - 1994)
Frieda Bartholomew was born in Oaks, South Dakota, August 26, 1920, the daughter of John and Anna Storm Meents Sr. She died on Sunday, February 13, 1994 at the Crawford County Memorial hospital in Denison at the age of 73.She was a loving and gentle person who was very thoughtful of others. She was a member of Skaggs Hospital Auxiliary in Branson, Missouri, and occupied her free time enjoying fishing, wood carving, painting and quilting.
Frieda was preceded in death by her parents; five sisters: Martha, Bertha, Mary, Anna and Sophia; and two brothers, John Jr. and Jake. Survivors include her husband, Reynold of Denison and one sister Margaret Paulsen of Council Bluffs.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, February 17, 1994 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa with Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. Philip E. Bloch officiating the service and graveside rites held at the St. Rose of Lima Cemetery in Denison. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Henry Henningsen singing "The Old Rugged Cross" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and congregational hymn "I Know That My Redeemer Lives". Pallbearers were: Michael Bartholomew, John Bartholomew, Walter Neumann, Delano Petersen, Kenneth Ries and Frand Peruzzi. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Hilbourne Eugene Zeitler (1922 - 1972)
Hilbourne Eugene Zeitler of rural Ida Grove was born May 25, 1922 at Bronson, Ia. His parents were Ray Zeitler and Eshter nee Anderson. He grew up in the Bronson community.For a while he worked in one of the Sioux City packing plants. He was married on Sept. 19, 1945 to Elna Ehler. After their marriage the couple began farming northwest of Schleswig where they were living at the time of his death. Mr. and Mrs. Zeitler left early on Friday morning to visit their son Denis in Missouri. South of Avoca on Aug. 4, 1972, Mr. Zeitler was killed instantly in a tragic car accident.
In 1958 Mr. Zeitler received adult instruction in preparation for membership in Immanuel Lutheran church at Schleswig. Since that time he had been a member of this congregation.
He is survived by his wife Elna, three children Denis of Edwards, Mo., Marlo of Ida Grove and Deanna at home, his mother, Esther Zeitler of Sioux City, four sisters, Irene of Omaha, Eunice of Sioux City, Velma of California and Edith of South Sioux City, Neb., four brothers, Donnie, Lester, William and David, all of Sioux City.
Funeral services were held on Monday, Aug 7 at the Immanuel Lutheran church in Schleswig with the Rev. F. A. Wiese officiating. Burial was in the Morgan Township cemetery. Pallbearers were Kent Streck, Carl Ruchti, Larry Clausen, Gene Schneider, Theodore Streck and Vernon Wolterman.
