(Obituary 1)DIES IN SIOUX CITY HOSPITAL
Miss Mary Sanders of Charter Oak Dies at German Lutheran Hospital in Sioux City Tuesday
ACUTE ATTACK APPENDICITIS
Deceased Born in Willow Twp. Nov. 26, 1902 - Funeral Held on Friday of Last Week
Tuesday evening the community was shocked to hear of the death of Mary Sanders at the German Lutheran hospital in Sioux City. Mary had attended school Thursday and Friday morning was taken with an acute attack of appendicitis. She grew rapidly worse and on Sunday afternoon was taken to Sioux City for an operation in hope of saving her life. From the time of the operation, Sunday evening, her life was despaired of and Tuesday evening at 6 o'clock death claimed the young life. Mary, being the only daughter, was her mother's companion. She was a member of the ninth grade in high school and dearly beloved by her companions, six of who acted as pall bearers.
She was born in Willow Township, Nov. 26, 1902, and died on March 20, 1917. Funeral services were held in the M. E. Church Friday morning, Rev. Mahood officiating and the remains taken to Dow City and laid to rest by the side of a little sister who preceded her ten years ago. Besides her father and mother she leaves to mourn her untimely death three brothers and host of friends. The entire community grieves with the bereaved one over their loss.
(Obituary 2)
A YOUNG LIFE CALLED
Death visited Charter Oak this week. A young girl, just budding into womanhood, was called from earth seemingly before her lifework was begun. And yet, who knows that this little girl had not fulfilled the entire mission for which she was sent here? Who knows that she was not just an errand bearer, bringing joy and comfort into the hearts of her people, carrying them over a crisis in their lives, and now her work done, she has been recalled to the God who gave her? Who knows?
Certain it is that she has gone in her purity, before the blighting temptations of earth have been put upon her. There is no question of her future, while there is always an element of doubt with us older people who have no doubt made mistakes - bad mistakes sometimes. She has bidden us good bye, her soul unsullied, her spirit as pure as the snows from heaven. Almost we should rejoice over her good fortune, instead of grieving over our disappointment. Yet who would not grieve? Our sympathy goes out to that father and mother who have lost their only girl. The great King, the King over all Kings, has called her to his service, and we of earth must swallow our sorrows. He works for the good, not of individuals, but of the human race, and this little girl was needed in his service.
Mr. and Mrs. John Sander grieve today over the death last evening of their little girl Mary, a favorite among the schoolgirls, almost idolized at home. She was taken sick last Friday, and it was seen that she was in extremely bade shape. Sunday she was taken to Sioux City, but it was too late. The body was filled with pus, and there was little use to fight for the life. Nevertheless, while there is life, there is hope, and the surgeons and nurses did all they could for her. She closed her eyes about six o'clock last evening for that long sleep that knows no awakening on earth.
She was brought home this morning, and the funeral has been arranged for Friday morning at half past nine in the Methodist church. Then she will be taken to Dow City to be laid away by the side of other members of her family.
Susie Mary Sander was born November 26, 1902 in Willow Township, and died March 20, 1917, aged 14 years, 3 months, and 24 days.
She leaves to mourn her death her parents and three brothers. One sister died ten years ago. Before departing this life, she gave every evidence of having her peace made with God, and was ready and willing to cross over to the other shore, where sorrow and pain are no more, and one of the last things she said was she was near the mountain top, and sang a verse of the song - "Faith of Our Fathers, Holy Faith" - clearly and distinctly, and the spirit took its flight to the God who gave it.
