Frieda (Mildenstein) Hamann (1917 - 1966 )

Funeral services for Mrs Leroy Hamann were held Friday, September 16, at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Ricketts, with Rev. F. A. Wiese officiating, Mrs Allen Nedderrneyer organist accompanied by the congregation who sang "Asleep in Jesus" and "Nearer My God To Thee."

Frieda Louise, of Ricketts, daughter of Nichalous Mildenstein and Anna Schutt was born at Washta, Iowa on February 18th 1917. While still a child the family moved to this community.

She was married on January 26th, 1934 to Leroy Hamann. The couple lived at Holstein, Schleswig, in Hanover Township and for the past ten years in the town of Ricketts. Frieda Hamann has been in ill health for the past 7 1/2 years and died at the Methodist hospital at Sioux City on Tuesday, September the 13th.

She is survived by her husband Leroy of Ricketts, three daughters: JoAnn, wife of Donald Hollrah of Omaha; Donna, wife of Merlyn Mitten of Omaha and Karol, wife of Richard Knop of Ricketts. Two brothers: Elvin of Battle Creek and Marlin of Sioux City. One sister: Lorraine Christiansen of Chanute, Illinois and 4 grandchildren. She attained to 49 years; six months and 25 days.

Pallbearers were Charles Carlson, Wayne Kuhlmann, Wilbert Langholdt, William S. Kiem, William Kuhlmann and Victor Schwarz. Interment was made at the Morgan Twp. Cemetery, Schleswig, Iowa.

Frieda (Hansen) Ewoldt (1900 - 1997 )

Frieda Ewoldt was born on a farm in Hayes Township, Crawford County, Iowa, May 26, 1900 the daughter of John and Mary Lorenzen Hansen. She was raised on the farm receiving her education in the local rural schools. Following grade school she attended sewing school in Manning becoming a seamstress.

On January 28, 1920, Frieda was united in marriage with John William Ewoldt at Denison, Iowa. Their union was blessed with three children, Iven, LaVonne and Lynn. They made their homes on farms in the Crawford County area until moving to Denison in 1940.

John died January 8, 1948 and Frieda continued to reside in Denison the rest of her life. Following the death of her husband, Frieda was employed at the Manning Egg Processing Plant and as a cook at various Denison restaurants until her retirement.

She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Ricketts, Iowa, as an adult, May 20, 1959 transferring her membership to Zion Lutheran Church in Denison March 21, 1965. Frieda was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who had a great love for cooking and sewing clothes for herself and all of her grandchildren. She especially loved to sew Barbie clothes for her granddaughters. Frieda enjoyed people and loved to entertain family and neighbors treating them with the results of her culinary talents. She spent many hours of her life creating crafts and crocheting. She loved gardening, flowers and especially her tomato plants. In addition to her church membership she was a former member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

On August 2, 1993, Frieda moved to Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison and it was there her death occurred Wednesday afternoon, February 26, 1997. At the time of her death she had attained the age of 96 years and 9 months.

Including her parents and her husband, Frieda was preceded in death by one son, Lynn Ewoldt, one daughter, LaVonne Kluver, one great granddaughter, Anna Mae Ewoldt, six brothers John, Thomas, Henry, Louie and Freddie Hansen and two sisters, Rose Callendar and Anna Ewoldt.

Those who remain to cherish her memory include one son and his wife, Iven and Marcia Ewoldt of Bullhead City, Arizona, one daughter-in-law, Lorraine Ewoldt of Denison, Iowa, one son-in-law, Marvin Kluver of Mapleton, Iowa, 7 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, 9 great great grandchildren, one brother, Leroy Hansen and his wife, Margaret of Bellingham, Washington,two sisters, Minnie Lamp of Manning, Iowa and Ellen Murphy of Sacramento, California, three sisters-in-law, Anna Ewoldt of Manilla, Iowa, Milda Hansen of Denison, Iowa, and Phyllis Hansen of Victor, Iowa, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., Monday, March 3, 1997 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa with the Rev. Kurt R. Kaiser and the Rev. Daniel G, Gifford officiating. Music for the service included Henry Henningsen singing "How Great Thou Art" and the congregation singing "What A Friend We Have In Jesus." and "Rock Of Ages". Karen Kahl served as organist. Casket bearers included Jim Ewoldt, John Swanson, Larry Kluver, Kenneth Ewoldt, Roger Ewoldt and Jeff Ewoldt. Interment was in the Manning City Cemetery at Manning, Iowa. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa. was in charge of the arrangements.

Frieda H. (Segebart) Natzel (1896 - 1990 )

Frieda Henrietta Johanna, daughter of Ernest and Augusta Krauel Segebart, was born Jan. 17, 1896, near Vail, la. She attended country schools near her home in rural Crawford County.

On Jan. 23, 1918, Frieda was united in marriage with Arthur Otto Natzel at her parents' home in Hayes Township, Crawford County. They lived in Manilla where Frieda was a homemaker, raising their children. In the fall of 1961, she and her husband were confirmed at, the Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla. Frieda was a member of the Lutheran Ladies Aid and the Neighborhood Birthday Club.

Her husband died on Feb. 12, 1964, after which Frieda continued to live in Manilla. Frieda entered the Manilla Manor in June of 1985, when her health began to fail. She died there on Monday, March 5, 1990, at the age of 94 years, one month and 16 days.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Maxine Natzel, as a young girl; by a granddaughter, Sandra Natzel; two great-grandsons in infancy; a son-in-law, Thomas L. Smith and by the following sisters and brothers: Emma Bock, Elsie Ladehoff, Anna Poleske and Lena Ladehoff, three sisters in infancy; Ben Segebart and Ernest Segebart.

Frieda is survived by her children: Vernon Natzel and his wife, LaVerne of Jefferson, Margaret Smith of Johnston, and Geraldine (Jeri) and her husband, Jack Allen of Wausau, Wis.; by eight grandchildren, five step grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; nine step great grandchildren; a sister, Ella Ladehoff of Manilla; a brother, Herman Segebart of Coronado, Calif.; and by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, at 1:30 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla with Pastor Glenn Wiechmann officiating. Music was by Marian Jones, organist, and Marlene Jahn, vocalist. Selections were "Jesus Lover of My Soul," "How Great Thou Art" and "What A Friend We Have In Jesus." Interment was in the Nishnabotna cemetery at Manilla. Pallbearers were Harvey Christensen, Charles Segebart, Howard Natzel, Greg Stevenson, Tom Smith and Brad Karlberg. The Ohde Funeral Home of Manilla was in charge of arrangements.

Frieda (Engelking) Petersen (1899 - 1963 )

Mrs Hans Petersen of Schleswig passed away at her home on June 26, 1963, at the age of 64 years, 5 months and 9 days. Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 29 at United Church of Christ with the Rev. W. Baumgartner officiating. Pallbearers were: Harold Engelking, Dick Engelking, Leslie Engelking, Palmer Peters, Albert Zabel Jr. and Arthur Hollander. Organist was Mrs Broder Petersen. A duet was sung by Mrs Harlan Buffman and Mrs Byron Behrmann. Burial was in the Morgan cemetery.

Frieda Marie Petersen, daughter of Dietrich and Jacobine Engelking, was born in Soldier Township on January 17, 1899, and was confirmed at the Evangelical and Reformed Church in Schleswig.

She was married to Hans Petersen of Schleswig on December 1, 1933. She was an active member of the Ladies Guild and the Dorcas Society of the United Church of Christ. She was a member of the Rebecca Lodge. She has lived in this community since 1911.

She is survived by her husband, one son Carlton of Schleswig, two daughters, Lee Ann and Joleen of Omaha, two grandchildren, Kimberly and Kurt Petersen, one brother, Alfred Engelking of Ida Grove, Iowa, and three sisters, Rosa, Mrs Albert Zabel, Sr. of Galva, Iowa, Lena, Mrs Levi Carr of Albert Lea, Minnesota, and Amanda, Mrs Albert Getzmier of Sioux City, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Ernest, Gus and D. C. Engelking.

George P. Broders (1919 - 1979 )

Funeral services for George Peter Broders, 60, of Battle Creek, were held at the St. John Lutheran Church in Battle Creek on Wednesday, January 2, 1980. Rev. Theodore Letzring, pastor of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig officiated at the 10 a. m , services. Burial was in the Mount Hope Cemetery. He died at his home Sunday, December 30, 1979.

Mr. Broders was born January 21, 1919, at Lake Preston, South Dakota to Richard Broders and Christena (Thomsen) Broders. He married Dorothy Mae Lewis on April 24, 1946, at Topeka, Kansas. He had spent all of his adult life in the Battle Creek, Schleswig and Ida Grove communities.

Mr. Broders farmed for 33 years. He also served in the U. S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church at Schleswig.

Survivors include the widow; his mother, Mrs. Christens Broders of Ida Grove; two daughters, Linda Brown of Omaha, Nebraska and Janice Broders of Lincoln, Nebraska; two sons, Edwin Broders of Cedar Rapids and Leland Broders of Battle Creek; two sisters, Mrs. Lowell (Dorothy) Hansen of Cherokee and Arlene Griesse of Escondido, California; one brother, Richard Broders of Schaller; and two grandchildren.

Gerhardine (Brunnsen) Petersen (1896 - 1985 )

Gerhardine F. Petersen was born on July 25, 1896, in Goodrich Township, Crawford County the daughter of Gerhardt and Christine Anna Andresen Brunssen. She died on Monday morning, March 25, 1985, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, at the age of 88.

Gerhardlne spent her early years on a farm in Crawford County. At an early age she made her home with Mrs. Henry Tebbe. She received her formal education in the rural schools near her home.

On December 20, 1922, Gerhardine was united in marriage to Adolph Petersen by Pastor Freese at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Together they farmed in the Denison and Dow City areas. They later moved to Schleswig where Adolph was employed by the railroad, After Adolph's retirement from the railroad, they moved to the Ricketts community. Adolph died in November of 1961. Gerhardine was a member of the St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Ricketts and an honorary member of the St. Luke's Ladies Aid.

In addition to her parents and husband Adolph, Gerhardine was preceded in death by two sons, Melvin and Vernon, two sisters, Anna and Elsie, and son-in-law, John.

Survivors include five daughters, Irene Jors, Annetta Petersen and Diane, Mrs. Vernon Jepsen all of Ricketts, Ruby, Mrs. Don Lewis of Sioux City, and Phyllis, Mrs. Lester Rolfes of Hinton, and one son Leonard Petersen of Jacksonville, Arkansas. Also surviving are twenty-six grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren, as well as a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, March 28, 1985, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Ricketts. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. Vicar John Laatsch officiated at the services and graveside rites. Mrs Marlene Lee served as organist for the services. Congregational hymn for the services included "Nearer My God to Thee" and "I'm But A Stranger Here". Serving as pallbearers were Gerald Jors, Ronald Kluender, Rodney Jepsen, Todd Jepsen, Steve Lewis and Tom Berens.

Gertrude (Schneider) Asmus (1905 - 1983 )

Gertrude Selma Wilhelmina Asmus was born on Sept. 20, 1905 at Denison, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Martha Henning Schneider. She died Jan 5, 1983 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, at the age of 77. Gertrude was baptized as an infant in 1905 and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith in 1919 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.

At an early age she moved with her family to Montana. After her fathers death, while she was still quite young, Gertrude returned to Denison making her home with her grandparents. She received her education at the Zion Lutheran School. Prior to marriage, she was employed in Denison.

On Nov. 22, 1924, Gertrude was united in marriage to William H. Asmus at Zion Lutheran Church. Together they made their first home on a farm in East Boyer Township until 1939 when they moved to Schleswig. In 1961, they moved to Long Beach, Ca. They continued to make their home in California until 1967 when they retired and returned to Schleswig. After Mr. Asmus's death in 1978, Gertrude continued to make her home in Schleswig.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Gertrude was preceded. in death by one son Billy and two grandchildren.

Survivors include, one son Charles, of La Mirada, Ca., seven daughters, Dorothy, Mrs, Robert Wiebers, and Margie, Mrs. John Lantz both of Charter Oak, Ruth, Mrs. Virgil Schmidt of Denison, Marilyn, Mrs. Leonard Ernst of Ida Grove, LaVerle, Mrs. Wesley Berg of Odebolt, Mrs. Shirley Kastner of Kiron and Kathryn, Mrs. Verdell Clausen of Schleswig. Also surviving are 28 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren and three brothers, William Schneider of Denison, Al Schneider of Tigard, Ore. and Walter Schneider of Desert Shore, Ca.

Funeral services were held Jan. 7, at 1 :30 p.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery. The Rev. Paul Wiegert officiated at the services, Mrs. Leroy Hight served as organist with the Immanuel Ladies Choir. Hymns for the services included, What A Friend We Have In Jesus, I'm But A Stranger Here and How Great Thou Art.

Gilbert G. Boysen (1912 - 1982 )

Gilbert Gustav Boysen was born on June 27, 1912 at Denison, the son of Nickolaus and Helena Kuehl Boysen. He died April 13, 1982 at the Manilla Manor, Manilla at the age of 69. Gilbert was baptized and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He was raised and educated in the Denison community.

After his marriage to Betty Whited in Omaha, Neb., he made his home in Crawford and Ida Counties. Later he moved to Denison where he was employed for many years. After Gilbert's retirement, he continued to make Denison his home. Due to failing health, Gilbert entered the Manilla Manor in Manilla in May of 1981.

In addition to his parents, Gilbert was preceded in death by one son Curtis, one daughter Janice, three sisters and three brothers.

Survivors include, three daughters, Dorothy (Mrs. Dan) Ruser of Schleswig, JoAnne (Mrs. LeRoy) Wilwerding of Omaha, Neb., and Phyllis Boysen of Des Moines. Also surviving are three grandchildren, one great grandchild, one brother Eldore Boysen of Sioux City and two sisters, Mrs. Hedwig Naeve of Charter Oak and Mrs. Helen Kisling of Sioux City.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, April 15 at 2 p.m. at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. The Rev. Glenn Wiechmann of Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla officiated at the services . Serving as pallbearers were Ed Marth, Burdell Friedrichsen, Willard Friedrichsen, Wilbur Kuhlmann, Gene Friedrichsen and Alvin Naeve. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Gladys (Nelson) Howie (1900 - 1966)

Funeral services for Mrs. Gladys (Nelson) Howie were held at the First Presbyterian church on Feb. 25 at 1 p. m. with Rev. John H. Middents officiating. Ron King, soloist, was accompanied by Mrs. Dorothy Norman. Pallbearers were T. C. Aarestad, Clarence Dahl, Floyd Page, Rex Ruch, K. C. VanBramer and R. M. Watson. Burial was in the Bethel cemetery at Kiron with the Huebner Funeral home in charge.

Daughter of C. W. and Anna (Lnudell) Nelson, she was born Dec. 19, 1900, in Kiron. She was baptized and confirmed in Bethel Lutheran church; attended Kiron grade school and the Denison high school. After graduation she attended the University of Nebraska. She was a member of the Sigma Alpha Niota Honorary Musical Sorority. She taught in the Kiron schools before moving to Denison.

In 1924, she was married to Dr. C. L. Sievers of Denison and in 1932 they adopted a son, Allan. Dr. Sievers died in November 1952.

In 1956 she was married to M. W. Howie of Schuyler, Nebr. They made their home in Denison where she remained after his death on May 15, 1964, until Oct. 19, 1965 at which time she, moved to the Masonic Manor, Apts. in Omaha. She was an active member of the First Presbyterian church in Denison, the Eastern Star and Daughters of the Nile. The past five weeks, she had been vacationing in Phoenix, Ariz., where she died suddenly Feb, 22 of a heart ailment.

Survivors include one sister: Mrs. Herbert Fitch of Fort Collins,. Colo.; one brother, Royal I. Nelson of Lexington, Mass.; her foster son, Allan Sievers, of Philadelphia, Pa.; five foster, grandchildren; two nephews, Lt. Cmdr. Dee Nelson Fitch of Norfolk, Va. and John William Nelson of Washington, D. C.

Glee N. (Hain) Boeck (1918 - 1979)

Glee Nadine Boeck was born Nov. 8, 1918, at Buck Grove, Iowa, the daughter of Frank and Mabel Brewster Hain, She died Tuesday, June 26, 1979 at St. Luke's Hospital in Sioux City after a long illness at the age of 60 years, 7 months and 18 days. Glee was raised in the Buck Grove area and attended the local schools. Later she attended Drake University and upon graduation taught school for many years.

On June 9, 1945, Glee was united in marriage to Harvey Harry Boeck at Denison. They made their home in Denison for many years and later moved to St. Paul, Minn. On Feb. 24, 1976, Harvey preceded her in death and since that time she had resided in Sioux City. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Denison.

Glee was preceded in death by her husband and her father. Survivors include one son, Scott of Golden, Colo., one daughter Lynn of Davenport, her mother, Mrs. Mabel Hain of Sioux City and one brother Gailen Hain of Sioux City and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Friday, at the Maxwell Funeral Home in Denison with the Rev. James D. Cobb officiating. Comfort in music was provided by Henry Henningsen as soloist and Dorothy Norman, as organist. Pallbearers included David Rauch, Sidney and Steve Schrum, Delmar Mauritz, Ronald Bierma and Donald Jensen. Burial was in the Nishnabotna Cemetery at Manilla. The Maxwell Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Godfrey W. Preuss (1907 - 1964)

Godfrey William Preuss was born at Burg of Fehmarn, Germany, on Feb. 20, 1907, the son of Karl and Katherine (nee Olderug) Preuss. He was baptized in the name of Jesus in infancy and confirmed in the Lutheran church of Germany at the age of 15. He came to America in 1925 and lived with his brother, Jack in Minnesota. Staying there for one year, he then came to Iowa where he has made his home until death.

On Oct. 11, 1933 he married Eleanor Riley. The couple lived in the Denison-Deloit-Vail community all of their married life. The marriage was blessed with two living daughters, Corinne at home and Mary Catherine, (Mrs. Alan Hargens) of Denison. He was apparently in good health when stricken with a fatal heart attack on May 2.

Preceding him in death were an infant daughter and his parents. Survivors are his wife Eleanor, two daughters, Corinne and Mary Katherine, one grandchild, Gena Ann Hargens, seven sisters: Anna, Emma, Jenny and Erna in Germany, Katie, Mrs. Theodore Soenksen of Deloit; Mrs. Lena Schneider of Avoca: and Mrs. Gertrude Leder of Rochert, Minn.; two brothers, Carl of Deloit and Jack of Worthington, Minn., along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.

Interment was on May 5 at Crawford Heights Memory Gardens, the Garden of the Good Shepherd at Denison. Pallbearers were Evan Anderson, Clarence Bartlett, Melvin Dozark, Merlyn Lenz, Carroll Zimer, James Quandt.

Gustav F. Andresen (1884 - 1968)

Funeral services for Gustav Fredrlck Andresen were held at the Huebner Funeral Horne at Denison, Iowa on Saturday, December 26th, 1968 with Rev. S. W. Holstein, officiating. Music for the service was provided by the Lutheran Ladies Choir with Mrs. Fred Rabe as accompanist. The hymns sung were "Abide With Me" and "Heaven is My Home".

Gustav Fredrick Andresen, son of Andres and Minna (Dorne) Andresen was born, February 4, 1884 near Arcadia, Iowa. He was baptized and: confirmed in the Lutheran faith and attended school in the Arcadia Area. After School he worked at Odebolt and then farmed and made his home in the Arion area.

In 1900 he was united in marriage to Maude Richardson and to this union five children were born. In January of 1958 they were privileged to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary at their home in Arion.

Gus passed away at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital at the age of 84 years.

He, is survived by five children, Bernice, Mrs. Wm. McCoy of Murtough Ida., Earl of Schleswig, Lucille, Mrs. Marvin Krayenhagen of Battle Creek, Evelyn, Mrs, Reed Kinney of Denison and Maxine, Mrs. Edlef Jurgensen of Kiron, 11 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren and one brother Julius of Harlan.

He was preceded in death by both parents, his wife, Maude and one grandchild, three brothers John, William, and Peter and one sister Minna.

Pallbearers were; Robert Andresen, Dale Kinney, Donald Kinney, Loren Kastner, Marlin Krayenhagen and . Melvin Krayenhagen, Interment was made in the Garden Of Good Shepherd Crawford Heights Memory Gardens, at Denison, Iowa.

Hans H. Petersen (1905 - 1984)

Hans Henry Petersen was born Aug. 11, 1905 near Mapleton, Iowa, the son of Jurgen and Minnie Hansen Petersen. He died Dec. 2, 1984 at the Denison Care Center in Denison at the age of 79. Hans was raised in the area of Arion and Kenwood. He received his formal education in the rural schools near his home and the Charter Oak Community Schools.

He was united in marriage to Emma Thomsen on Jan 18, 1928 in Denison. Together they made their home in Dow City and later in Denison. They returned to Dow City for a brief time before moving to Schleswig in 1957. Hans and Emma spent 1977 as house parents for the Sheltered Workshop in Denison. Emma died in 1981.

Hans continued to make Schleswig his home until he was married to Lynda Schoening on March 17, 1983 in Denison. They made their home together in Denison.

In addition to his parents and his wife Emma, Hans was preceded in death by one sister, Ella and one brother, Otto.

Survivors include his wife, Lynda of Denison two sons, Robert of Denison and Donald of Harlan and one daughter, Audrey, Mrs. Jack Lambert of Sioux City, two stepsons, Donald Schoening of Beaumont, Tex. and Alan Schoening of Slater, and one step-daughter, JoAnn, Mrs. Howard Pulse of Winterset. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, six great grandchiIdren, twelve step grandchildren and one step great grandchild, one brother, Rudy Petersen of Dow City and one sister, Emma, Mrs, Everett Garrett of Dow City.

Funeral services were held Dec. 5, at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Dow City. Burial was in the Dow City Cemetery. The Rev. Dr. James Campbell officiated at the services. Mrs. Rex Kuhlman served as organist with Mrs. Jim Muff as soloist. Hymns included, "Just As I Am" and "How Great Thou Art." Pallbearers were nephews, Beryl Garrett, Alan Garrett, Jack Garrett, Larry Garrett, Glenn Petersen, Gary Newland, Arlen Petersen and Doug Petersen. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Harold H. Riessen (1924 - 2003)

Harold Harry Delbert Riessen was born July 7, 1924, in Otter Creek Township, near Schleswig, to Henry F. Riessen and Dora Hollander. He died November 18, 2003 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa. Harold was baptized on January 12, 1925 and later confirmed on March 17, 1940 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. He received his education in a rural school near Schleswig.

On December 23, 1951, Harold married Emma (Emmy) Hildegard Marie Schneider at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Harold and Emmy took up farming at various locations around Schleswig. In November of 1987 they moved from their farm west of Schleswig to a house in town. Harold also did various trucking jobs, mowing for Immanuel Lutheran Church, and later in life, errands for his family. Harold and Emmy had four children, nine grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Throughout his life, Harold enjoyed farming and being outside or on the tractor, driving his truck, bowling, going to dances while Emmy was living, playing cards, eating out and in his younger years, playing baseball with the town team. He was of German descent and spoke only German for several years and still enjoyed speaking German with others. He also loved being around his grandchildren and going to their games and events. He always had time for ice cream. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and served in various ways. He was also a member of the Schleswig Community Club.

He was a loving and kind husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Harold could easily be seen at the Schleswig Feed Store, driving around in his pick-up or on Saturday mornings, at the Denison Sale Barn. He always had a word to say and usually liked to give people a hard time in a teasing manner. He liked children and could be heard saying "give me five", and held out his hand, especially to his grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, Emmy; two sisters, Viola and Delores; four brothers, Sonny in infancy; Erwin; Herbert; and Hank; three brothers-in-law, Paul Schneider; William Schneller; and Martin Schneider; one sister-in-law, Edith Schneider; and one son-in-law, Terry Wiegel.

Survivors include his children, Carol Korwes and her husband, Jack of Ida Grove; Connie Riessen of Storm Lake, Iowa; Harry Riessen and his wife, Kay of Schleswig; and Brian Riessen and his wife, Heather of Defiance; nine grandchildren, Angelia Wiegel-Clausen, Nathan Korwes; Nicholas, Matthew, Christina, Timothy, Skielar, Sierra, and Elijah Riessen; one great-grandson, Dalton Clausen; one sister, Dorothy, one brother, Ernie and his wife, Delores; six sisters-in-law, Elfie, Reva, and Marian Riessen; Rose Mae Schneller, Shirley Schneider, and Jeannetta Knief and her husband, Cyrenus; one brother-in-law, Herman Schneider; several nieces and nephews, and many friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, November 22, 2003 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Merle Mahnken officiated the service and grave side rites held at Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Organist Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for the congregational hymns "How Great Thou Art," "Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound". "Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me", "I'm But a Stranger Here", "Onward Christian Soldiers", and for a special family song "Silent Night! Holy Night"! Those serving as Honorary Pallbearers were: Christina Riessen, Matthew Riessen, Dalton Clausen. Skielar Riessen, Elijah Reissen. Nicholas Riessen, Timothy Riessen, Angelia Clausen, Nathan Korwes, and Sierra Riessen. Those serving as Pallbearers were: Robert Schneller, Rodney Riessen, Robert Riessen, Dan Riessen, David Kult, Richard Hanlin, Joann Riessen, Laurel Kaiser, and Bruce Voog. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them in fellowship and lunch served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of the arrangements.

Harold J. Lafrentz (1906 - 1995)

Harold John Lafrentz was born December 28, 1906, the son of John and Ida Jessen Lafrentz. He died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison on Sunday, September 24, 1995 at the age of eighty-eight.

Harold was born in Otter Creek Township, near Schleswig, Iowa and received his education in a rural school near his home. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.

On December 28, 1932, Harold was united in marriage to Selma Boger at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. The couple settled on a farm east of Schleswig, where they farmed with his parents for three years, before moving to the Jessen family farm near Deloit. In the spring of 1945 they moved to a farm east of Schleswig where they resided until moving to Schleswig in 1969.

Harold was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. He was a loving husband and a caring father and grandfather. He enjoyed occupying his free time socializing with family and friends in a game of cards and was very fond of his livestock that he raised.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son in infancy; one brother, Arthur Lafrentz and one sister, Emily Kuehl.

Survivors include his wife, Selma of Schleswig; two daughters, Maedelle Hennings and her husband, Val of Denison; Connie Teut of Schleswig; one son, Donald Lafrentz and his wife, Joy of Kiron; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild; one sister, Lillian Jensen of Denison; one sister-in-law, Hilda Lafrentz of Schleswig; a very close cousin, Delbert Jessen and his wife, Genivieve of Carroll.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, September 27, 1995 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa with Rev. Donald R. Wagner officiating the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Sharon Thompson provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Henry Henningsen, singing "Just a Closer Walk With Thee: and congregational hymns "Lord Take My Hand and Lead Me" and "How Great Thou Art". Pallbearers were: Alfred Weinbrandt, Wayne Lafrentz, Richard Pickel, Dale Lafrentz, Robert Miller and Oran Kuehl. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them for lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid.

Harry Fredericks (1912 - 1987)

Harry Fredericks was born on February 1, 1912, in Hanover Township, the son of Fred Fredericks and Lizzie Vogt Fredericks. He died at his home in Schleswig on March 4, 1987 at the age of 75 years 1 month and 3 days. Harry grew up in Hanover Township and attended rural schools. He was baptized and confirmed at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison by Rev. Frese. After his mother's death at an early age, Harry worked as a hired hand for several years.

On September 27, 1942, Harry was united in marriage to Selma Koch at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Grant Township, Ida County, Iowa. To this union, one son was born. After marriage, they farmed in Grant Township until retiring in 1976 when they moved to Schleswig.

In addition to his parents, Harry was preceded in death by two brothers, LeRoy in infancy and William in 1972. Survivors include his wife, Selma; one son, James and his wife, Coleen Fredericks of Ida Grove; five grandchildren, James Fredericks Jr. of Vermillion, South Dakota, Deborah, Diane, Darla and Dennis Fredericks all of Ida Grove; four sisters, Laura and her husband, Ernst Huebner of Yakima, Washington, Mrs. Mary Bruhn of Gray, Iowa, Marie and her husband, Vernon Greder of Dow City, and Helen and her husband, Ray Spruill of Glendale, California; and one sister-in-law, Ella Fredericks Bravard of Alta. Harry was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Schleswig.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 7, 1987, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig with burial in the Morgan Township Cemetery of Schleswig. Pastor Richard Nelson officiated at the services. Mrs. Leroy Hight served as organist for congregational singing "How Great Thou Art" and "Rock of Ages". Serving as pallbearers were David Bohlmann, Stanley Fredericks, Daniel Greder, Orlan Abbe, DeWayne Sonksen and Donnie Paul Koch.

Harry Petersen (1894 - 1984)

Harry Peterson was born on December 11, 1894, near Shelby, the son of Nels and Mary Olson Peterson. He died on Sunday afternoon, April 14 at the Dunlap Care Center in Dunlap, at the age of 90. Harry spent his formative years in the Shelby area. He received his formal education in the Shelby, and Portsmouth schools.

On May 27, 1918, Harry entered the United States Army at Harlan. During World War I be served in France. He was discharged from the Army on June 14, 1919.

Harry was united in marriage to the former Mildred McGee on December 9, 1921, in Logan. Together hey farmed in the Woodbine, Dow City, and Charter Oak areas. In 1983 they retired from farming and moved into the Charter, Oak community. Harry was honored in 1981 by Wallace Farmer Magazine as the oldest active farmer in Iowa. He was a member of the American Legion for many years. In October of 1984, he entered the Dunlap Care Center due to failing health.

In addition to his parents, Harry was preceded in death by four brothers, Andrew, Martin, Fred, and Willie and one Sister, Dorothy.

Survivors include his wife Mildred of Charter Oak, two sons, Dale and wife Janice of Sac City and Walter and wife Lola of Adair, and one daughter, Mrs. Eldene Abbott of Charter Oak. Also surviving are eleven grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, and four sisters, Mary Ever, Julie Clementsen, and Pearl, Mrs. Ray Osler of Council Bluffs, and Ollie Baker of Missouri Valley, as well as a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, April 17, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Charter Oak. Burial was in the Charter Oak Cemetery near Charter Oak. The Rev. Jim Gubser officiated at the services and graveside rites. Mrs. Carol Hunter served as organist for the services with Mr. Henry Henningsen serving as soloist. Hymns for the services included Rock of Ages and Abide With Me. Serving as pallbearers were grandsons, Robert Abbot, Gene Abbott, Kevin Abbot, Dennis Peterson, Darin Peterson, Darryl Peterson, and Mark Peterson. Serving as honorary pallbearers were granddaughters Nancy Bellcock Pat Laursen, Vicki Dehner and Cindy Lundy. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner funeral Home of Charter Oak.

Harvey H. Boeck (1919 - 1976)

Harvey Harry Boeck, son of Harry and Hattie Christine Kolls Boeck was born March 9, 1919 in Manilla. He grew up in the Manilla area attending the Manilla School System. Upon his graduation he entered the Marine Corps and after his basic training he was sent with a unit to the Philippines. He was reported missing in action and was held a prisoner of the Japanese for three and a half years. He was awarded the Good Conduct, Sharpshooter, and 4 Battle Stars, the Purple Heart and Asiatic Combat Ribbon.

He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith, later transferring his membership to the Presbyterian Church.

He was united to Glee Nadine Hain of Denison by the Reverend W. L. Tillman, on June 9, 1946. They were blessed with two children a daughter Lynn and a son Scott. He sold stocks, bonds, and insurance and at the time of his death on Feb. 24, 1976 he was employed by the North Northeast Reality of Blaine, Minn.

Harvey was, preceded in death by his father Harry. He is survived by his wife Glee Nadine of St. Paul, a son Scott, a member of the Marine Corps stationed in Hawaii, a daughter Lynn, stationed in Heidelberg, Germany, his mother Hattie of Manning, two sisters, Darlene, Mrs. Elroy Schrum of Manning and Maxine, Mrs. Don Rowe of Whittier, Calif., six nephews, four nieces, and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Feb. 26 at 11 a.m, at the Maxwell Funeral Home. Rev. James D. Cobb officiated with comfort in music by Mrs. Harold Norman, organist and Henry Henningsen, soloist. Pallbearers were Keith Kelderman, Steve Schrum, David Rauch, Sidney Schrum, Robert Boeck, Donald. Jensen, and Dick Hain. Interment was in the Nishnabotna Cemetery in Manilla.

Harvey F. Neumann (1918 - 2003)

Harvey Fritz George Neumann was born February 5, 1918, the son of John and Alfrieda Miller Neumann. He died on Friday, December 19, 2003 at the Denison Care Center in Denison, Iowa at the age of eighty-five. Harvey was born near Manilla, Crawford County, Iowa. He was baptized in Christ on June 16, 1918 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa and later confirmed on April 9, 1933 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. He received his education in rural schools near his home in Crawford County.

On February 25, 1940, Harvey was united in marriage to Leora Bruns at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. The couple made their home on a farm near Manilla and were blessed with the birth of three children. In 1961 they moved to Denison. Harvey was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. He was a member of Men's Club, served a number of years on the Board of Trustees and participated in Fellowship Club. Harvey enjoyed music all of his life. He especially enjoyed hosting a Jam Session annually. He enjoyed bringing music to others. Some of his hobbies besides music were fishing, visiting with neighbors and friends, fixing small appliances, attending antique steam engine shows and traveling.

Harvey was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Leora; his brother, Vernon Neumann; a great-grandson, Austin; a sister-in-law, Betty Jean Bruns and a niece, Robin Rogers.

Survivors include three sons Darrell Neumann of Vallejo, California; Lowell Neumann and his wife, Doris of Denison; Verle Neumann and his wife, Leila of Manteca, California; three grandchildren, Tami, Todd and Shawn; four great-grandchildren, Shayne, Keaton, Nicholas and Noah; two sisters-in-law Helen Popken Neumann of Denison; Arlene Ruberg and her husband, Ray of Moville; one brother-in-law, Leonard Bruns of Bakersfield, California; many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 23, 2003 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. David Sewing officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Denison, Iowa. Organist Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for the sermon hymn, "How Great Thou Art" and also for the congregational hymns, "What A Friend We Have in Jesus", "I'm But a Stranger Here" and "I Know that My Redeemer Lives". Honorary pallbearers were: Frank and Norma Schmitz, Harvey and LaRoyce Lamp, Don and Nancy Radentz, Rick and Mary Underwood, Gordon and Jeri Hough, Jack and Delores Jessen, Charlie and Lois Kruse, Paul and Ruby Jahn, Shirley Schneider, Ruth Overhue, Florence Kepford and Les Sahl. Those serving as pallbearers were: Tami San Agustin, Todd Struble Neumann, Shawn Neumann, Lowell Neumann, Darrell Neumann and Verle Neumann.

Hattie C. (Kolls) Boeck (1900 - 1977)

Hattie Christina Kolls , daughter of Charles and Anna Blunk Kolls was born September 6, 1900 in Crawford County, Iowa.

She attended rural schools in Crawford County and on August 18, 1918 was united in marriage to Harry William Boeck in Denison, and they made their home in the area.

To this union was born two daughters, Darlene and Maxine and one son Harvey.
The family lived in Denison where Mr. Boeck had a stock buying station and Hattie helped in that operation.

Mr. Boeck passed away in May 1973 and Mrs. Boeck had made her home in Manning since that time and was a resident of the Manning Plaza, until passing away January 24, 1977.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Harry, and one son Harvey.

She is survived by her two daughters, Darlene, Mrs. Elroy Schrum of Manning, and Maxine, Mrs. Donald Rowe of Whittier, California, eleven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

One sister, Mrs. Henry Boeck of San Antonio, Texas, two brothers Ben, of Morristown Minnesota and Carl of Manilla, other relatives and a host of friends. She had been baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith and later transferred her membership to the United Presbyterian Church of Denison.

Helen (Amman) Anderson (1909 - 1985)

Helen Josephine Anderson was born on September 27, 1909 on a farm near Denison the daughter of John J William and Gracie Burmeister Amman. She died Saturday morning, November 23, 1985 at her home in Denison at the age of 76.

Helen spent her formative years with her family on the farm in Crawford County. She was baptized at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and later became a member of the Presbyterian Church. She received her formal education in the rural schools near her home and later Denison High School. Following graduation in 1928 she taught for a number of years in the rural schools in Crawford County.

Helen was united in marriage to Evan Anderson on February 14, 1942 in Rockport, Missouri. Together they made their home on a farm northeast of Vail. They were members of the United Presbyterian Church in Vail during their years on the farm. They retired from farming in 1975 making their home in Denison on May 4th, 1983.

Preceding Helen in death were her parents. Survivors include her husband Evan of Denison, one son Donald Berry and wife Joanie of Vail, and two daughters, Arlene Wiederstein and her husband Kendal of Audubon, and Jean Birney and her husband Lloyd of Denison. She is further survived by five grandchildren, Scott and Kristi Wiederstein of Audubon, and Eric, Ryan, and Carrie Bretey of Denison, one sister Hazel Lapel and husband Raymond of Vail, and one brother Arden Amman and wife Catherine of Denison, as well as a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, November 26, 1985 at 10:30 a.m. At the United Presbyterian Church in Denison. Interment was in the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison.

Helen (Johannsen) Harder (1910 - 1971)

Helen Louise Johannsen Harder of Ida Grove, Iowa, was born in Ida County on August 10, 1910. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Johannsen. She attended school in Ida County with her confirmation instruction at Trinity, Grant Township.

She was joined in marriage to Oscar Harder on March 22, 1930. After their marriage they farmed around Battle Creek for some years. In 1949, they I bought a farm north east of Schleswig, where they were living at the time of her death. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Schleswig and was very active in the Ladies Aid Society in which she held office a number of times. She died Saturday, November 13, 1971, at her home.

She is survived by her husband Oscar of rural Ida Grove; three daughters: Lois, wife of Emmett Sahl of Battle Creek, Kay, wife of Dale Reese of Garden Grove, California, and Patricia, wife of Duane Sharp of Longmount, Colorado; her father, C.R. Johannsen of Battle Creek, one brother, Robert Johannsen of Charter Oak, and 8 grandchildren. She attained to 61 years, 3 months and 3 days.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 16, 1971 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, with the Rev. F .A. Wiese officiating. Burial was in the Morgan Township Cemetery. Pallbearers were Orlan Fouts, Carl Jensen, Howard Ehler, Andrew Jessen, Theodore Aldag, and Astor Swenehart.

Henry A. Pithan (1887 - 1984)

Henry August William Pithan was born on September 13, 1887, in Stockholm Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the son of John and Wilhelmina Giermann Pithan, He died on Friday evening, October 19, 1984 at a nursing home in Fullerton, California, at the age of 97. Henry was baptized as an infant and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith at St. John's Lutheran Church in Stockholm Township. He was raised on a family farm and attended rural schools.

Henry was united in marriage to Augusta Neumann on April 20, 1912, at St. John's Lutheran Church. Together they made their home in Boyer where Henry operated a general store and post office. Later they moved to Denison where Henry managed the Farmers Union Grocery Store. He later represented the Farm Casualty Insurance Company. Mrs. Pithan died in 1942.

In 1956, Henry moved to California. He married the former Alvina Koeppen on June 11, 1956, in Las Vegas. Until the time of his retirement, Henry was employed with the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim. He had continued to reside in his home in Anaheim until most recently when he entered a nursing care facility.

In addition to his parents and his wife Augusta, Henry was preceded in death by one son in infancy, one great grandchild, two brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include his wife Alvina of Anaheim, one son, Gerhardt Pithan of Hawthorne, California; one daughter, Helen, Mrs. Albrecht Koch of Ricketts; one step daughter Leona, Mrs. Bill Moorhead of Anaheim; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, three step grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren, Also surviving are three sisters, Henrietta Pithan of Denison, Mrs. Lilly Schultz of Kiron and Esther, Mrs. John Stehr of Odebolt.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, October 24, 1984, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Stockhohn Township. Burial was in the church cemetery. The Rev. Richard Nelson officiated at the services. Lois Gronau served as organist with Henry Henningsen as soloist. Hymns included "How Great Thou Art" and "Asleep In Jesus ". Serving as pallbearers were Lester Stehr, George Pithan, Merlin Olbertz, Douglas Gronau, Gerald Gronau and LeRoy Hansohn.

Henry Baak (1912 - 1985)

Henry Baak was born on March 26, 1912,on a family farm in Crawford County, Iowa. He was baptized on April 21, 1912, and confirmed on March 28, 1926 at Immanuel Lutheran Church Soldier Township, He died Sunday morning, April 21, 1985 at Eventide Lutheran Home. Henry received his formal education in the Immanuel Lutheran School in Solider Township. He later farmed with his father for several years.

On Dec. 20, 1967, at Soldier Township, he married the former Ruth Kroll. Together they made their home on the Baak family farm. In 1978, they retired, from farming and moved into the Charter Oak community. In March of this year, Henry entered the Eventide Lutheran Home. Henry served as secretary of the congregation at Immanuel Lutheran Church for many years, and was member of the Soldier Township School Board. He was a present member of the Charter Oak Senior Center Board, and past Farm Bureau member.

Henry was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Paul. Survivors include his wife, Ruth; three stepchildren, John Sander and Gordon Sander both of Milwaukee, Wis., and Susan, Mrs. Gail Larsen of Omaha, Neb; seven step grandchildren; one brother, Julius of Denison; two sisters, Meta Baak and Verna, Mrs. Nohna Pithan, both of Charter Oak.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 23 at 11 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Soldier Township. Burial was in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. The Rev. E.E. Greene officiated at the services. Mrs. Fred Rabe provided music for the services. Serving as pallbearers. were Leslie Baak, Eddie Baak, Kenney Baak, Herbert Meyer, Charles Ferguson and Carl Bohlmann. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Henry C. Hartwig (1885 - 1973)

Henry C. Hartwig, son or the late Charles and Sophie (Boesche) Hartwig, was born April 12, 1885, on a farm near Denison and died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, July 27, 1973 at the age of 88. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Mr. Hartwig attended rural schools and graduated from Denison high school and attended Denison Normal college.

In 1910 he married Linda Knapp of Kendall, N. Y. at Kendall. They had one son. Mr. Hartwig was employed by the North Western Railroad as clerk for several years and for several years he was associated with his son in farming. Mrs. Hartwig died in 1954.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, four brothers, Herman, Carl, Fritz, Otto and a sister Lena. Survivors include a son Herbert and granddaughter.

Funeral services were held at Zion Lutheran church in Denison July 30 with Rev. Robert Maschke officiating. Huebner Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Henry F. Berndt (1884 - 1976)

Funeral services for Henry Fred Berndt were held Wednesday, October 20, 1976 at 2 p.m. at the Ohde Funeral Home, Manilla. Officiating was Pastor Victor Hoyer of Trinity Lutheran Church, Manilla. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Irwin. Pallbearers were: Albert Andresen, Hugo Ewoldt, Donald Kerr, Marvin Petersen, Leonard Grill and Harold Conrad.

Henry Fred, son of Christian and Sophia Koepke Berndt, was born January 21, 1884 near Aspinwall. He lived with his family in the Denison and Schleswig area until moving to Arcadia where he followed the trade of a barber.

He was united in marriage with Caroline Thomsen, on July 11, 1905. After two years in Arcadia they moved to a farm near Irwin, they moved to Manilla in 1957. His wife died about the time they were moving and Henry then made his home in Manilla until moving to Manning Plaza about two and half years ago. He died at the Plaza Sunday afternoon, October 17 at the age of 92 years, 8 months and 26 days.

He was preceded in death by his wife, one son Harold, one daughter, Bernice in infancy by his parents, three brothers and three sisters. He is survived by two children Ray Berndt, of Manilla and Maxine, Mrs. Ray Conrad , Irwin, eight grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter, as well as by many other relatives and many friends.

Henry F. Boysen (1899 - 1973)

Henry Fred Boysen, son of the late Broder and Lena (Ehlers) Boysen, was born May 15, 1899, on a farm in Goodrich Township, and died Feb. 4, 1973 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa, at the age of 73 years, 8 months and 10 days. Mr. Boysen attended rural schools and was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.

He was united in marriage to Inez E. Childress of Deloit on April 9, 1925 at Denison. They made their home on the farm where he was born and raised. To this union seven sons and one daughter were born.

Mrs. Boysen died on May 15, 1959. Mr. Boysen remained on the farm until he retired in 1964, at which time he moved to Denison.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and one daughter Laverne. Survivors include his seven sons, Hubert of Arthur; Leonard of Sac City, Melvin of Alton, Mo., Dean of Burlington, Burdon of Alton, Mo., Joseph of Deloit, James of Kiron, eight grandchildren, two sisters Hertha, Mrs. Johannsen of Fullerton, Calif., and Mrs. Ella Hansen of Denison, a foster sister Mrs. Mabel Spencer of Seattle, Wash. and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at Zion Lutheran church in Denison on Wednesday, Feb. 7, 1973 at 2 p. m. with the Rev. Robert Maschke officiating. Interment was made in Oakland Cemetery, Denison with the following serving as honorary pallbearers: Henry Bramley, Tom Finnegan, Edwin Greenstreet and A. L. Johnson. The following served as pallbearers: LaVerne Boyens, Henry Christiansen, Donald Fink, Elmer Rothe, Lewis Schroeder and Clarence Zitzlsperger. Huebner Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Henry B. Behm (1901 - 1973)

Henry George Behm, son of the late Henry C. and Dora Japp Behm was born in Davenport May 5, 1901, and died Sept. 2 at the age of 72. Mr. Behm attended Davenport schools. He was Baptized in the Lutheran Faith. When he was 16 years old he came to Crawford County to live with an aunt and work on farms.

In 1922 he married Freida Deiber of Denison, They made their home on farms in Washington and Nishnabotna Township until 1945, at which time they moved to Denison due to ill health.

Mrs. Behm died in 1959. Mr. Behm continued to live in Denison. He worked at the Firestone store for several years and the past 10 years he was custodian at the Home Federal Savings and Loan in Denison.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Frieda. Survivors include one brother, William, of Davenport.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Sept. 6, at the Huebner Funeral Home, Denison, with Rev. Robert Maschke officiating. Burial was at the Oakland Cemetery.

Henry J. Preul (1889 - 1988)

Henry Johannas Preul was born on April 25, 1899, the son of August and Fransico Peter Preul on a farm near Ricketts, Ia. He grew up in the area and attended rural schools. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Soldier Township.

On Feb. 14, 1923, Henry and Ardella Peters were united in marriage. This union was blessed with one son, Ardelbert. Ardella passed away on March 14, 1924. On Feb. 6, 1935, Henry and Florence Wessel were united in marriage at Charter Oak. This union was blessed with eight children.

Henry farmed and trucked, along with custom hay baling, corn shelling and threshing. As a pastime he enjoyed playing cards. Henry died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital on Saturday, Feb. 20, 1988 at the age of 88 years. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison at the time of his death.

In addition to his parents and first wife, Ardella, Henry was preceded in death by three brothers two in Infancy and Fred Preul, and five sisters: Anna Schoenfeld, Hilda Maack, Hattie Hagemann, Clara Hagemann and Ella Steckelberg.

Survivors include his wife Florence; children: Adelbert Preul and his wife Lorraine, Rovanis Preul and his wife Berneil, Janice and her husband, Howard Christiansen, all of Denison, Larry Preul and his wife, Mary of Alhambra, Calif., Gary Preul and his wife, Barbara of Denison, Joyce and her husband Guenter Detlefsen of Schleswig, Darrell Preul and his wife, Linda of Orlando, Fla., Darlene and her husband, Richard Rudner of Tulsa, Okla., and Richard Preul and his wife, Debra of Kiron. Also surviving are eighteen grandchildren; three great-grandchildren two brothers, Edward Preul and his wife, Alma of Charter Oak and Louie Preul and his wife, Vera of Deloit; and one sister, Lena Sanders of Denison.

Henry M. Braasch (1905 - 1975)

Henry Martin Braasch, son of Henry and Marie Albertson Braasch, was born February 17, 1905, in Hamburg, Germany, and died October 20, 1975, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, at the age of 70 years, 8 months and 3 days.

Mr. Braasch was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and attended school in Germany. At the age of 17 years he came to the United States and settled in Schleswig, where he was employed as a farm laborer. In 1929, he became a naturalized citizen of the United States.

He was united in marriage to Mildred Quandt at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hanover Township on April 19, 1931. They settled on a farm near Charter Oak, where he worked as a farm laborer, later working on various farms in the Charter Oak and Schleswig vicinity. In 1957 they moved to Denison, where Mr. Braasch was employed at Farmland Foods, Inc. until retiring in February 1970.

He was preceded in death by his parents. a son, Gilbert, a daughter, JoAnn, a grandchild and a brother Willie.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred, two daughters, Betty (Mrs. Arnold Wulf) of Deloit, and Connie (Mrs. Ray Mulligan) of San Antonio, Texas, one son, Kenneth of Deloit, eight grandchildren, a sister, Erna Bernhard of Germany, nieces and nephews and many friends.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p. m, on Thursday, October 23, 1975, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, with Pastor Robert Maschke officiating. Pallbearers were Louis Aldag, Fred Kruse, John Hildebrandt, Clarence Koester, William Ludwig, and Albert Petersen. Interment was made in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Hanover Township.

Henry P. Paulsen (1893 - 1968)

Henry Peter Paulsen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Henry Paulsen, was born November 27, 1893, in Crawford county near Schleswig, Iowa. He died Wednesday August 7, 1968, at the hospital in Battle Creek, Iowa, after a long illness at the age of 74 years, 8 months and 10 days.

Mr. Paulsen resided with his parents on a farm northwest of Schleswig until his marriage to Dora Hanneman on December 1, 1915, at Schleswig. After marriage he farmed in the Cushing and Correctionville vicinity and from 1925 until 1954 he and his family farmed in Soldier township, Crawford county. He retired from farming in 1954 and moved into the town of Mapleton. After about a year he began to work at the Uhl's Standard Service station in Mapleton where he worked for four years.

Mr. Paulsen was baptized on July 27, 1894, at Grant Lutheran Church and was confirmed into the Lutheran Faith on March 20, 1910, also at Grant. He was a faithful member of the Immanuel Lutheran church in Soldier township for many years and was a trustee for several years. Since moving to Mapleton he was an active member of St. Matthew's Lutheran church. Mr, and Mrs. Paulsen had celebrated fiftieth wedding anniversary in 1965.

Survivors include the widow, Dora; two daughters, Mrs. Martin (Lillian) Wodtke of Mapleton and Mrs. Merlin (Wardene) Overhue of Charter Oak, Iowa; one son, Peter, of Charter Oak; 13 grandchildren; one great granddaughter; two brothers, August, of Webster City, Iowa, and Edward of Correctionville, Iowa; one sister, Mrs. Helen Ernst of Schleswig. He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter and two sisters.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m Saturday, August 10, 1968 at St. Matthew's Lutheran church at Mapleton, Iowa. Pastor R W. Leenerts officiated. Interment was in Morgan Cemetery at Schleswig, Iowa under direction of the Walter Funeral Service of Mapleton. Pallbearers were Louis Bruhn, Melroy Ernst, Larry Johnson, Dennis Reimer, Garret Buss and Joseph Brewer.

Herbert E. Riessen (1920 - 2001)

Herbert Elmer Walter Riessen was born April 22, 1920 in Otter Creek Township, Crawford County, Iowa to Henry and Dora Hollander Riessen. He died May 6, 2001 at Willow Dale Care Center, Battle Creek, Iowa at the age of eighty-one.

Herbie was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa and received his education in rural schools. He was confirmed April 9, 1933 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig, Iowa.

He worked as a farm laborer until 1941 when he entered the United States Army. He served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater with the 32nd Infantry Division 126 Regt., G Company. Receiving the Combat Inf. Badge, two Bronze Stars, while serving in Papuan, New Guinea and Luzon, P.I. When he returned from overseas duty he served as a military policeman at Camp Fort Robinson, Arizona.

Herbie was united in marriage to Reva Krueger on January 16, 1949 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. They farmed near Schleswig and were blessed with five children. He retired from farming in 1983. Herbie then worked as a sexton for the Morgan Cemetery. In 1996 he and Reva moved to Ida Grove, Iowa and Herbie entered Willow Dale Care Center on April 22, 1997.

Herbie was a loving husband and father and served his family and friends as an example of honesty, integrity and contentment. He enjoyed bowling, playing cards and "Teasing." Socializing gave him much pleasure, especially in the company of small children. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, the Community Club, the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Red Arrow Association.

Preceding him in death were his parents; two sisters, Viola and Delores; three brothers, Erwin, Henry and infant Sonny. Herbie is survived by his wife, Reva; his children, Peggy Gallagher and husband, Jack of Slatington, Pennsylvania; Ronda Chapman and husband, Les of Grand Haven, Michigan; Bradley Riessen and wife, Diane of Schleswig, Iowa; Laurel Kaiser and husband, Kenny of Cheyenne, Wyoming and Kirk Riessen of Sioux City, Iowa; six grandchildren, four step-grand-children, and one step great-grandchild; brothers, Earnie Riessen and wife, Deloris and Harold Riessen and sister, Dorothy Riessen, all of Schleswig, Iowa.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 9, 2001 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Merle Mahnken officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Rubie Kastner singing "In My Father's House" and congregational hymns "Holy, Holy, Holy", "I'm But a Stranger Here" and "God of Our Fathers". Honorary pallbearers were: Wayne Bliesmann, Randy Braase, Bruce Braase, Lowell Teut, Larry Abbe, Terry Abbe and Bruce Aldag. Military Honors and pallbearers were the American Legion Post No. 645 and the V.F.W. Post No. 3930, Schleswig, Iowa. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of arrangements.

Herbert L. Pautsch (1902 - 1970)

Herbert Louis Pautsch, son of Robert and Rose Marie Neddermeyer Pautsch, was born August 24, 1902 at Packwanna, South Dakota and passed away January 18, 1970 at the Community Hospital at Long Beach, California. When a young man he moved to Crawford County with his parents. He was baptized in infancy and later confirmed in the Lutheran Church.

On February 20, 1924, he was united in marriage to Hedwig Louise Jensen of Denison. To this union four children were born, the oldest having died in infancy. They made their home on a farm near Deloit and Kiron for several years, later moving on a farm at Wall Lake, Iowa, before moving to California, where they have lived for the past 12 years. They managed the Garden Motel for the past nine yearn at Seal Beach, California.

Herbert was preceded in death by his parents, one infant son, one sister, Adela who died in infancy, two brothers, Ervin and Ferd.

He is survived by his wife Hedwig Louise, three children, Normadine, Mrs. Gene Vogel of Wall Lake, Iowa, Robert C. of Anaheim, California and Roger L. of Huntington Beach, California, six Grandchildren, one sister Lydia, Mrs. Charles Powell of Jefferson, Iowa, one brother George of Los Angeles, California, several other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held, for Herbert Pautsch of Seal Beach, California, Thursday January 22, 1970, 1:30 P.M. at the Peach Lutheran Church, Wall Lake, Iowa, with Rev. C. W. Schmidt officiating. Comfort in music by Mrs. Jack Nuetzman, Organist. Hymns by Mrs. Orville Herrig, Mrs. Don Becker, Don Becker and Leland Weitzel. Casket Bearers were Lloyd Leindenreick, Herman Knef, Frank Schroeder, Dale Jondle, Charles Raine and Paul Vogel. Flowers were arranged by Mrs. Leland Weitzel, Mrs. Marvin Nutzman and Mrs. Orville Herrig. Burial Was in the Morgan Township Cemetery at Schleswig, Iowa.

Herbert F. Peters (1897 - 1966)

Funeral Services for Herbert F. Peters, 69, who died Friday evening, June 10th, were held Monday forenoon at the United Church of Christ. Rev. R. J. Ratzlaff officiated. Mrs Ernie Grell and Mrs Ray Martens sang "Beyond the Sunset" and "How Great Thou Art." They were accompanied on the organ by Mrs Broder Petersen. Military honors were conducted by local Posts of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Herbert Peters, son of Claus J. Peters and Emma Schroeder was born on March 12, 1897 in Crawford county. He spent his entire life in Crawford county. He moved to town in 1904. For 46 years he has been associated with the drug store. At first he worked for Henry Boysen and later, the store was purchased from Mr Boysen. A hard community worker, he was a member of the Schleswig Community Club, Volunteer fire department, the school board and American Legion Post No. 645. At one time he served as head of all four organization simultaneously. He was also a member of the Schleswig business mens' club. He served. in the army during World War I.

He served. long hours at the drug store. Until recently it was a common sight to see "Hap" open the store before 8:00 o'clock in the morning and not close until 9:00 or l0:00 at night. A friend of young and old alike, the drug store was a popular meeting place for young people after school and during off hours.

On September 20, 1920 he married Mabel Mae Clark at Moville. They had two daughters, Lois Mae and Nora Lee.

A few weeks ago Hap complained of not feeling well. When the cause of his trouble could not be found locally he was taken to the Veterans hospital in Omaha where he underwent a lung operation. He came home over a week ago and thought to be recovering, when he died suddenly Friday evening.

He is survived by his widow one daughter, Nora Lee, Mrs Donald Kroeger, and six grandchildren: Nancy, Mike and Vanessa Kroeger and William, Reggie and Terri Jacobsen. He is also survived by two sisters, Ella Schroeder of Ida Grove, Minnie Kells of Bridgewater, S. D. and a brother, Emil of Denison.
He is preceded in death by a daughter, Lois Mae Coleman, two brothers, three sisters and four half brothers. Burial was made in the Morgan cemetery.

Herman E. Bohlmann (1892 - 1977)

Herman Ernest Bohlmann of Schleswig died on March 27, 1977, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, Iowa, at the age of 85.

He was born on March 13, 1892 at Morgan Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the son of Michael and Wilhelmina Bohlmann. As a young boy Herman received his education at the Hanover Parochial School. He was baptized and later confirmed into the Lutheran faith at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hanover Township.

On February 25, 1914, he was united in marriage to Nellie Marie Sciford at Charter Oak Township. For the next 27 years Herman with his wife farmed the home place in Morgan Township. Then they bought their own farm in Hanover Township where they lived and farmed for 24 years. In 1965 he retired and moved to Schleswig, Iowa, He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig.

In addition to his parents, Herman was preceded in death by three brothers and five sisters. Survivors include, his wife Nellie of Schleswig; three sons, Edgar Bohlmann of Omaha, Nebraska, Ernest Bohlmann of Storm Lake, and Donald Bohlmann of Omaha, Nebraska; three daughters, Mrs. Emil (Lillie) Petersen of Schleswig, Mrs. Caroline Lux of Omaha, Nebraska, and Mrs. Frank (Donna) Karas of Kansas City, Missouri , Also by 19 grandchildren, 25 great- grandchildren and 1 great- great- grandchild, and by two sisters, Mrs. Rose Schwarz of Ricketts and Mrs. Ben (Marie) Carstensen also of Ricketts, Iowa.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, March 30, 1977, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. The Rev. Theodore Leming; pastor, officiated at the services. Burial was made in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Hanover Township. Pallbearers included: Darryl Petersen, Loren Lux, Mark Bohlmann, Herbert Bohlmann, Elmer Bohlmann and Alfred Hagemann. Honorary pallbearers were Michael Bohlmann, Jeffery Karas and Larry Bohlmann.

Herman Neuhofel (1896 - 1989)

Herman, son of Timm and Rosa Holtdorf Neuhofel, was born Sept. 15, 1896, in Central City, Neb. He attended country school in the Central City area. In 1915, Herman came to the Kirkman, la., area where he worked as a farmhand. In 1918, he enlisted in the United States Army. He trained at Camp Dodge and spent nearly a year in France.

In 1920, Herman was united in marriage with Elsie Grage, the daughter of Claus Grage. To this union were born five children, Robert, Irene, Marjorie, Kenneth, and Lynn. Herman and Elsie farmed in the Manilla area and Herman also worked for Crawford County road maintenance until his retirement in 1962. He and Elsie celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Herman continued to live in the Manilla area, moving to the Manilla Manor in January of 1989. Herman helped to organize the American Legion in Manilla and was a member of the Presbyterian Church.

He died on Sunday, Oct. 15, 1989, at Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison at the age of 93 years and one month.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie; his parents; five brothers, William, Fred, Joe, Bob, and Harold; three sisters, Minnie Gudenrath, Ella Knudson, and Ina Petersen; by a daughter, Marjorie Jordon; by a son, Bob ; and a granddaughter, Tracy.

Herman is survived by a daughter, Irene and her husband, Joe Schiltz, of Manilla; by two sons, Kenneth and his wife, Sharon of Omaha, Neb., and Lynn and his wife, Pam of Conway, Ark.; by 21 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Martha Neuhofel, of Neodesha, Kan.; a son-in-law, Phil Jordan, of Sedona, Ariz.; and by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Manilla with Pastor Richard Shaffer of the United Presbyterian Church of Vail officiating. Music selections were "How Great Thou Art" and "In The Garden" by Kay Rutherford, vocalist and Trudy Saunders, organist.
Interment was in the Nishnabotna Cemetery at Manilla with Wayne Neuhofel, Rex Neuhofel, Michael Neuhofel, Robert Neuhofel, William Schiltz and Glenn Schiltz as pallbearers.

Herman Peper (1880 - 1967)

Funeral services were held for Herman Peper on Saturday, July 29, at the United Church of Christ with Rev. R. J. Ratzlaff officiating. Mrs. John Evers, organist accompanied Mrs. Ernie Grell and Mrs. Donald Meyer who sang "Old Rugged Cross" and "Abide With Me."

Herman Peper was born on February 20, 1880 at Morgan Township to John Peper and Agnes nee Mundt Peper. He died July 26 after many years of illness.

On December 18, 1912 he was married to Alma Carstensen. They farmed in Minnesota for two years in O'Brien County for ten years and after moving to Schleswig he operated a road maintainer and worked as a carpenter.

He is survived by five daughters, Florence Gunnemann (Roy), of Luverne, Minn.; Agnes Glaser (Clarence) of Hartley; Viola Graham (J. D.) of Sioux City; Lillian Anderson (Wayne) of Norfolk Nebr.; and Loranine Maiden (Ralph) of Houston, Texas and one son, Raymond J. Peper of Schleswig. He had 19 grandchildren and 36 great grandchildren. He also is survived by two brothers, Albert of Ronda, Neb.; John of Minnesota; three sisters, Annie of Van Wagner, Calif,; Hattie of Petry, Calif. and Lillian Snyder of Ponca City, Okla.

Burial was made in the Morgan cemetery. Pallbearers were Wayne Muhs, James Frahm, Donald Glaser, Daniel Mackie, LeRoy Gunnerman and Roger Seighbrecht.

Hertha (Marth) Abbe (1888 - 1984)

Hertha Katherine Abbe was born on September 2, 1888, in Hayes Township, Ida County, Iowa, the daughter of Hans and Juliana Redlin Marth. She died on Sunday afternoon, August 19, 1984, at the Willow Dale Nursing Home in Battle Creek, Iowa, at the age of 95. Hertha spent her formative years on a family farm in Hayes Township. She was baptized as an infant and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grant Township.

On November 27, 1907, Hertha was united in marriage to John F. Abbe at the parsonage at Trinity Lutheran Church. Together they farmed north of Schleswig for thirty-five years before moving to a farm in Blaine Township in Ida County. In 1951, they retired and moved into the Schleswig community. After Mr. Abbe's death, Hertha continued to make her home in Schleswig.

In 1970, she moved to Danbury making her home with her daughter and spent: her summer months with another daughter at Spirit Lake. Hertha was a life long member of the Lutheran church. For many years she was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig and was active with the Immanuel Ladies Aid.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Hertha was preceded in death by one son Leonard, one son in infancy, three grandchildren, one great-grandchild, four sisters, three brothers and four sons-in-law.

Survivors. include one son Ted Abbe and his wife Irene of Schleswig; five daughters, Mrs. Clara Stockfleth of Danbury, Mrs. Irene Paulsen of Ida Grove, Mrs. Alice Bruhn of Schleswig, Mrs. Esther Jepsen of Spirit Lake, and Lois and her husband Ray Scott of Danbury. Also surviving are fourteen grandchildren, twenty-six great-grandchildren seven great-great-grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Mabel Magnussen of Cherokee and Mrs. Edna Janssen of Ida Grove.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, August 23, 1984, at 10:30 a.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. Burial was in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery near Schleswig. The Rev. Richard Nelson officiated at the services. Mrs. Don Thompson served as organist with the Immanuel Ladies Choir. Hymns included "How Great Thou Art" and "I'm But a Stranger Here".
Serving as pallbearers were Merlin Stockfleth, Roger Paulsen, Dennis Bruhn, Terry Abbe, Gene Mauer and Robert Scott.

Hilda Albertina Baker was born on Oct. 1, 1906 on a farm near Vail, the daughter of Christian August and Albertina Born Weinbrandt Sr. She died on Nov. 24, 1986 at the Denison Care Center after a prolonged illness having attained the age of 80 years one month and 20 days.

Hilda was Baptized on Nov. 15, 1901 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla, and later Confirmed on March 20, 1921. She spent her early years on a farm and attended rural school. She moved with her parents to Denison and finished her education.

On Feb. 10, 1932, Hilda was united in marriage to Herbert Baker at her parents home. After marriage they moved to a farm in Boyer Township where they farmed for many years. They retired from farming in 1968 and moved to Denison. Hilda entered the Denison Care Center in 1983 where she was living at the time of her death.

Hilda was a long time member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Stockholm Township and later transferred to Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. For many years she was a member of St. John's Ladies Aid, Zion's Ladies Aid, and the Crawford County Hospital Auxiliary.

In addition to her parents, Hilda was preceded in death by five brothers and four sisters, one son-in-law, Gerald Jurgensen and one grandson, Roger Jurgensen.

Survivors include, her husband Herbert, one son Alfred of Omaha, Neb.; one daughter Lorraine Jurgensen of Denison; and one brother Fred Weinbrandt of California. Also surviving are nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Nov. 24, at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Burial was in the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery in Stockholm Township. The Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. James W. Ristvedt officiated at the services. Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist with Henry Henningsen as soloist. Serving as pallbearers were: Melvin Baker, Roger Baker, John Jessen, Verdell Kastner, Orville Meister and Roger Weinbrandt. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Hilda M. (Ullrich) Bergstadt (1903 - 1980)

Hilda Margaret Bergstadt was born on June 27, 1903 at Hanover Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the daughter of Claus and Mary Marquardt Ullrich. She died June 26, 1980 at St. Anthony's Hospital, Carroll at the age of 76. Hilda was baptized as an infant and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Her early years were spent on a family farm where she received her formal education in the rural schools near her home.

On February 21, 1923, Hilda was united in marriage to Harold Bergstadt at Zion Lutheran Church at Denison. They made their. home on a farm in Goodrich Township until their retirement in 1945 when they moved to Denison. Hilda was a member of Zion Lutheran Church as well as a member of the Dorcas at Zion.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband in 1969, two brothers and two sisters. Survivors include, one son Dennis, of Denison, one daughter, Vivian, Mrs. Wesley Welch of Franklin Park, N. J., five grandchildren, three great grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Mae Fisher of San Francisco, Cal.

Funeral services were held June 30 at 10:30 A. M. at the Zion Lutheran Church, Denison. Burial was in Crawford Heights Memory. Gardens. The Rev. John Lutze officiated at Ute services. Pallbearers were Eldon Broderick, Vernon Brodersen, Delbert Ullrich, William Ullrich, Albert Ewoldt, and Robert Bergstadt. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Howard S. Henry (1893 - 1974)

Howard Steven Henry, son of Steven and Lucy Clark Henry, was born March 12, 1893, at Canton, S.D. As a small boy he came to the Manilla area where he attended the rural schools. When he grew to manhood he homesteaded near Dickson, N.D., until leaving to serve his country overseas during World War I.

Following his discharge, he returned to the Manilla community where he married Freda Jensen on Jan. 18, 1922. They farmed near Defiance in Greeley Township until retiring to Minnesota in 1949. In 1963 they returned to Iowa to make their home in Irwin. Following the death of his wife on Sept. 25, 1973, Howard has made his home with his children. About six weeks ago, he entered the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines, where he died Monday evening, April 22, 1974, at the age of 81.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and six brothers and sisters. He is survived by his son, Dean Henry of Des Moines, his daughter, Mrs. John (Bernice) Crooks, Ankeny, by eight grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren and by one brother, Free Henry, Macon, Mo.

Funeral services were Thursday, April 25, at the Ohde Funeral Home, Manilla. Rev. George McMullen officiated. Burial was at the Astor Cemetery near Manilla. Masonic memorial services were held Wednesday, April 24 at the Ohde Funeral Home, Manilla, by Sordius Lodge No. 444.
