Leslie George Greder (1925 - 1989)

Leslie George Greder, the son of Peter George and Cecile Iona Hulsebus Greder, was born on Nov. 24, 1925, at Buck Grove. He died on April 7, 1989, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison at the age of 63 years.

Leslie grew up on a farm near Buck Grove and attended school in Buck Grove. He furthered his education, graduating from the Denison High School with the class of 1944. On Aug. 17, 1944, Leslie entered the U.S. Army, serving his country in the European Theater. He received his discharge on July 5, 1946. upon returnig home, he worked as a mechanic in Buck Grove until 1959, when he moved to Illinois to continue his occupation as a mechanic.

On Sept. 5, 1959, Leslie and Roberta Dieber of Chicago were united in marriage in Chicago. This union was blessed with four children. Roberta died on Dec. 6, 1972. Leslie continued to make his home in Illinois until retiring and moving to Denison in July, 1988.

Leslie was baptized on May 21, 1961, in the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church at Oak Lawn, Ill., by Rev. Paul Gahl and was later confirmed in the Lutheran faith.

Preceding him in death were: his parents; his wife, Roberta and one brother, Roger. Survivors include his children: Russell Greder and his wife, Nancy of Burbank, Ill., Patricia Greder of Bloomington, Ill., Randall Greder of Bridgeview, Ill., and Roger Greder of Bridgeview, Ill.; also two grandchildren, Kristine and Kevin Greder of Burbank, Ill.; two sisters, LaRuth and her husband, John Mathies of Federal Way, Wash., and Delores and her husband, Vernon Hast of Denison; one brother, Keith Greder and his wife, Betty of Denison; nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 10, at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Paster Kurt Kaiser officiated and Mrs. Darold Kahl was organist for Henry Henningsen as soloist. Selections were "The Old Rugged Cross" and "How Great Thou Art." Interment was in South Chapel Hills Gardens in Worth, Ill.

Lois E. (Kastner) Knief (1925 - 1974)

Mrs. Cyrenus Knief Dies Following Heart Attack Sat.

Funeral services for Mrs. Cyrenus Knief were held Tuesday, January 15, 1974, at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig with Rev. R.J. Ratzlaff and Rev. A.F. Rinne officiating. Miss Becky Ratzlaff, organist, accompanied Mrs. Harlan Buffum and Mrs. Don Meyer as they sang "How Great Thou Art" and "Take Thou My Hand".

Lois E. Knief was born on July 9, 1925 in Morgan Township, Crawford County, Iowa, to Louie Kastner and his wife Lydia nee Thiede. She was baptized and confirmed in the United Church of Christ.

She married Cyrenus Knief on January 21, 1945, with Rev. A.F. Rinne officiating. To this union were born three children: Gayle, now of Denison; Gary, of Deloit; and Arla, at home. For the past number of years, she was employed as office secretary of Farmers Mutual Insurance Association of Schleswig. Mrs. Knief passed away very suddenly at home on Saturday, January 12, after efforts by Arla's fiance, Gary Laubscher and Crawford County Memorial Hospital attendants failed to revive her. She attained the age of 48 years, 6 months and 3 days.

Besides her husband and children, she is survived by her father and step-mother, Louie and Helen Kastner; two daughters-in-law, Diane (Mrs. Gayle) Knief, Jeryl (Mrs. Gary) Knief, one grandson Jason, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Lydia and a brother, Burness.

Pallbearers were: Lyle Worley, Ron Kastner, Gene Bergman, Orben Kastner, Bruce Bergren and Irwin Harm Sr. Interment was in Morgan Township Cemetery.

LaVerne M. (Harder) Haase (1922 - 2005)

LaVerne M. Haase was born October 23, 1922, the daughter of Rudolph and Ida Hamann Harder. She died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Sunday, May 15, 2005 at the age of eighty-two.

LaVerne was born in Denison, Iowa. She lived with her family on a farm near Denison and received her education in a rural school near her home. On May 18, 1947, LaVerne was united in marriage to Edmund Haase at the Zion Lutheran Parsonage by Rev. C.W. Schmidt. The couple settled on the family farm in Goodrich Township near Denison and were blessed with two children. The couple farmed together until 1975 when they purchased Harold's Club in Denison which they managed until 1993 when Edmund passed away. LaVerne remained on the farm for two years before moving to an apartment in Denison.

In her leisure time, LaVerne enjoyed the company of her family and friends. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who enjoyed short trips to see her grandchildren. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.

LaVerne was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Edmund in 1993 and her sister-in-law, Violet Boeck. Survivors include one son, Steven and his wife, Deb of Olathe, Kansas; one daughter, Kim Childress and her husband, Scott of Overland Park, Kansas; seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter, Ezra Haase and his wife, Kate and their daughter, Guinevere; Michael Haase; Elizabeth Haase; David Haase; Paul Haase; Connor Childress and Cole Childress; two brothers-in-law, Vernon Haase and his wife, Lillian and Virgil Boeck, all of Denison.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 18, 2005 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. David Sewing officiated the service and grave side rites held at Oakland Cemetery in Denison, Iowa. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment while Larry Boeck and Katie Christensen sang, "Come to Jesus". Congregational hymns were "Oh, for a Thousand Tongues to Sing" and "How Great Thou Art". Those serving as pallbearers were Michael Haase, Gary Seastrom, Dwight Boeck, Larry Boeck, Ezra Haase and Terry Boeck. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch served by the Dorcas Society. The Huebner Funeral home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Ervin Frederick Mohr (1920 - 2001)

Ervin Frederick Mohr was born on July 8, 1920, the son of Carl and Amanda Thoms Mohr. He died March 13, 2001 at the St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of eighty.

Ervin was born in Stockholm Township, Schleswig, Iowa and was baptized in Christ on October 17, 1920 in Schleswig, Iowa. He grew up in the Schleswig and Ricketts area and received his early education in the Ricketts Schools and then moved to Denison, where he graduated with the class of 1938. Ervin enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1941 and served four years, receiving and honorable discharge in 1945.

On June 25, 1947, Ervin was united in marriage to Wilma Stolz in Earling, Iowa. Ervin held various jobs and started his own business, which was building homes and home improvement. In 1967, Ervin and Wilma moved to Florida, where Ervin invested in a travel trailer supply store and worked for five years until returning to Denison in 1973.

Ervin was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, the Denison American Legion and the Golden K. He was semi-retired and enjoyed traveling and spending winters in various locations. Due to various injuries, Ervin and Wilma could no longer travel.

Ervin was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Amanda, two brothers, Clarence and Elmer Mohr. Survivors include his wife, Wilma of Denison; numerous nephews and nieces; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 17, 2001 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. David Sewing officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for solist, Eldon Hardekopf singing "The Lord's Prayer" and "Precious Lord, Take My Hand" and congregational hymn "How Great Thou Art". Pallbearers were: Milfred Nemitz, Travis Sanders, Troy Sanders, Louie Miller, Roger Mohr and Greg Miller. Military honors were American Legion Post No. 8, Denison, Iowa. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Dorcas Society. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Maxine Mary (Andresen) Jurgensen (1921 - 2004)

Maxine Mary Jurgensen was born June 20, 1921, the daughter of Gustav and Maude Richardson Andresen. She died Saturday, August 21, 2004 at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa at the age of eighty-three.

Maxine received her elementary education in a rural school near her home and graduated from the Dow City High School with the class of 1939.

On December 22, 1939, she was united in marriage to Edlef Jurgensen. The couple settled on a farm near Arion and was blessed with the birth of a daughter, Shirley. The couple farmed near Arion for five years and then moved to and farmed in the Schleswig area until 1968, when they purchased the Oasis in Denison, which they operated for ten years. Maxine and Edlef then retired and moved to Schleswig.

In her spare time, she enjoyed sewing, embroidery, baking, and in her younger years, dancing. She loved her family very much and enjoyed spending time with them, even attending as many of their sports events as possible. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Denison, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Edlef in 2001; three sisters: Bernice McCoy and her husband, Bill; Lucille Krayenhagen and her husband, Marvin; and Evelyn Kinney and her husband Reed; and one brother, Earl Andresen.

She is survived by her daughter, Shirley Kastner and her husband, Loren of Schleswig, Iowa; three grandchildren: Corey Kastner and his wife, Deanna of Sibley, Iowa; Cal Kastner and his wife, Tracy of Schleswig, Iowa; and Trudi Andernacht and her husband, Craig of Kansas City, Kansas; four great-grandchildren, Courtney Plotz and her husband, Tyler of Havelock, North Carolina; Calvin Kastner of Sibley, Iowa; and Cara and Cierra Kastner of Schleswig, Iowa; one great-great-grandchild, Tavian Plotz of Havelock, North Carolina; one sister-in-law, Esther Andresen of Schleswig, Iowa; many relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, August 24, 2004 at the United Presbyterian Church in Denison, Iowa. Dr. Richard Shaffer officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Marilynn Jepsen provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Rubie Kastner as she sang, "In The Garden" and "How Great Thou Art". Those serving as pallbearers were: Marlan Krayenhagen, Melvin Krayenhagen, Roger Friedrichsen, Robert Andersen, Donald Kinney and Dale Kinney. The family invited everyone at the service to join them at the church in fellowship and lunch served by the Presbyterian Women. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Marion (Deiber) Block (1922 - 2007)

Marion Block was born June 4, 1922 the daughter of Albert Walter and Ida Weiss Deiber. She died Saturday, January 27, 2007 at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa at the age of eighty-four.

Marion was born on a farm near Buck Grove, Iowa and received her education in a rural school near her home. She was baptized in Christ, December 20, 1922 and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith, November 5, 1944.

On February 20, 1946, Marion was united in marriage to Meinhard Block in Buck Grove. The couple made their home on a farm until moving to Denison in April 1972. She moved to Eventide in 2001.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. She was a very gracious lady who loved her family and enjoyed baking and cooking for them and was very conscientious about caring for her home. Marion enjoyed socializing with close frinds and family. She corresponded with radio stations to compliment them on their programming projects. In her free time she enjoyed painting on porcelain plates and scrap booking newspaper clippings and photographs. In her younger years she enjoyed playing the guitar.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1987, one sister, Laverne Deiber in her youth; two brothers, Wallace and Glen and her step-mother, Leona Deiber. Survivors include three brothers, Lloyd Deiber and his wife, Janice of Denison; Alan Deiber and his wife, Linda of Omaha; Ronald Deiber and his wife, Carol of Alta; two sisters-in-law, Bernadine Deiber of Denison; Lois Deiber of Sioux City; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held 11 a.m., Wednesday, January 31, 2007 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Rev. Kurt Kaiser officated the services and grave side rites held at Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Organist Karen Kahl provided accompaniment for the congregational hymns "Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me," "Just As I Am, Without One Plea," and "What A Friend We Have in Jesus. Those serving as pallbearers were: Stanley Deiber, Lucas Deiber, Terry Deiber, Nathan Deiber, Matt Deiber, and Tim Deiber.

Ralph Herbert Reincke (1920 - 2002)

Ralph Herbert Reincke was born March 4, 1920, the son of Harold and Christina Volkmann Reincke in Otter Creek Township. He died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Monday, July 15, 2002, at the age of eighty-two.

Ralph was born in Otter Creek Township near Schleswig. He was baptized in Christ April 11, 1920, by the Rev. W.R. Wetzler and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith in 1934, by the Rev. Schwidder at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. After completing his education at Otter Creek No. 3, Ralph farmed with his family.

On September 15, 1948, Ralph was united in marriage to Luella Schroeder at the Immanual Lutheran parsonage by Rev. Wiese. The couple settled on the home farm where they lived until their retiring to Schleswig in December of 1973. Ralph enjoyed helping his neighbors with various repair projects, tending flowers in their garden and spending time with his nieces and nephew and their families. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig.

Ralph was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Clarence and sister-in-aw, Elvira. Survivors include his wife, Luella of Schleswig; one brother-in-law, J. Henry Schroeder of Denison; one sister-in-law, Elsie Schroeder of Denison; nieces and newphew, Marlene Chaney and her husband, Sonny of Omaha; Mary Hamer of Carroll; Judy Koch and her husband, Gary of Fort Dodge; Tom Schroeder and his wife, Nancy of Las Vegas, Joleen Whiting and her husband, Jim of Schleswig; several great-great-nieces and nephews, other family and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, July 27, 2002 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Lee Mentink officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "How Great Thou Art", "Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound", and "I'm But a Stranger Here". Those serving as pallbearers were: Richard Schuring, Palmer Volkmann, Raynard Schmidt, Allen Stoneking, Dr. D.L. Schmidt, Gilbert Nihsen, P.J. Moeller and Nick Wilken. William Curtis Pryor (1928 - 1990)

William Curtis Pryor, the son of James Homer and Carrie Marie Highfill Pryor, was born April 24, 1928 near McKenzie, Tenn. He died Aug. 21, 1990 at his home in Schleswig, Ia., at the age of 62 years.

William grew up on a farm in Carroll County, near McKenzie and attended a rural school. After his education, he continued to help on the family farm and also did crop-share farming in the community.

William and Doris Futrell of Tennessee were united in marriage Feb. 5, 1949 in Mississippi and this union was blessed with five children. They continued to farm in Tennessee until 1950, when they as a family moved to Schereville, Ind., where William worked as a diesel mechanic, a job he held until 1960. At this time he became interested in trucking and made that his occupation, coming to Denison in 1968 and driving for Farmland Industries for 20 years. He retired in 1988 and moved to Schleswig to make his home.

Preceding William in death were his parents; one brother, Wesley and one sister, Vera. Survivors include his children: Betty and her husband, Lonnie Gibson of Troy, Ohio, Kathy and her husband, Michael Korner of Schleswig, Wilma and her husband, John McClellan of Schleswig, James William Pryor of Lebanon, Ohio and Lowell Pryor and his wife, Pamela of Schaller; 12 grandchildren; one brother, Porter Pryor of Tennessee; two sisters, Virgie and her husband, Andrew Bryant of Milan, Tenn., and Verlie Coble of Huntingdon, Tenn.

Funeral services were held Friday, at 10 a.m. at the Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig. Pastor Richard Nelson officiated at the services with interment in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. Mrs. Marlene Hight was organist and Mrs. Rubi Kastner was soloist. Solo selections were "The old Rugged Cross" and "Rock of Ages." Pallbeares were Kevin Boeck, Reese Burk, Byron Hoffmeier, Dale Lenz, Dean Martinson and Dean Wilson.

George Harold Heeren (1920 - 2001)

George Harold Heeren was born February 7, 1920, the son of Peter Jurgen and Annie Marie Boyels Heeren. He died Wednesday, October 24, 2001 at the Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan, Iowa at the age of eighty-one.

George was born in Deloit, Iowa and received his education in the Deloit school. After his education, he worked on a farm until he entered the United States Army on May 19, 1942. While serving his country, George was stationed in the Middle East, Italy and Africa, where he served as a cook. He was honorably discharged in 1945, at which time he began farming for Lacey North.

In 1945, George was united in marriage to Florence Reauwsaat in Denison. The couple was blessed with the birth of four children. The couple began farming and continued to do so until he retired due to health reasons in the late 1970's. In 1984, George was united in marriage to Cindy Feller in Harlan, Iowa. The couple made their home in Irwin, and later in Defiance.

He was a loving father and grandfather who cared for his family very much. In his spare time, he enjoyed baking pies, cookies and cakes, sewing Cabbage Patch Dolls, quilts and mending clothing. He liked canning, cooking outdoors, and playing cards with family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Jerald and Louis; and two adopted grandchildren, Mark and Nicole Feller. He is survived by his son, George Heeren Jr. and his wife, Michelle of Tempe, Arizona; his daughter Mary Jo Willett and her husband, Paul of Bent Mountain, Virginia; his adopted daughter Rhonda Friedrichsen and her husband, Burnus of Denison; two step-daughters, Janice Farley of Denison and Judy Thomsen and her husband, LuVerne of Denison; two grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; two former wives, Florence Heeren of Denison, and Cindy Larson of Earling, Iowa; three sisters, Mildred Simons of Arion; Viola Landgraf of Denison; Gladys Luft of Jefferson; one brother, Hubert Heeren and his wife, Lois of Tyrone, Oklahoma; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, October 27, 2001, at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Vicar James Krueger officiated the services and grave side rites held at the Oakland Cemetery in Denison. Organist Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for soloist Colleen Wessel as she sang "Amazing Grace", and for congregational hymns "Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me", and "What A Friend We Have in Jesus". Those serving as pallbearers were: Bruce Friedrichsen, Doug Schwarte, Mike Krajicek, Jr., George Slater, and Alvin Kohl. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Mary Irene (Fitzpatrick) Hansen (1920 - 2005)

Mary Irene Hansen was born October 16, 1920, the daughter of Maurice and Mary Dwier Fitzpatrick. She died at Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, Thursday, May 26, 2005 at the age of eighty-four.

Irene was born in County Kerry, Ireland. Following the death of her mother in 1927, Irene moved with her family to New York City. In 1929, the family moved to Crawford County. She received her education in the Denison Community High School, graduating with the class of 1939.

On September 12, 1944, Irene was united in marriage to Orville Hansen at the Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Church in Schleswig, by the Rev. A.F. Rinne. The couple settled on the family farm and were blessed with the birth of two sons. The couple moved to Schleswig in the early 1980's but continued to farm for several more years before retiring.

In her leisure time, Irene enjoyed caring for her flower and vegetable gardens, and occupied much of her time cooking and baking. In her younger years, she and Orville enjoyed bowling. She was a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother who always stayed in tune with her children and grandchildren's sporting events. She enjoyed both basketball and football both in the local arena and major league events and local track competitions. She and Orville were enthusiastic dancers to big band events and were involved in the organization of many regional dances. Lawrence Welk's Orchestra was one of their favorite big band orchestras.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother Michael Fitzpatrick in 2001; and her husband, Orville in 2004. Survivors include, two sons, Jerry Hansen and his wife, Judy of Burnsville, Minnesota; Rick Hansen and his wife, Leslie of Seattle, Washington and three grandchildren, Chad, Justin and Kyle Hansen.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 1, 2005 at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Chris Burtnett officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Wendy Bumann provided the organ music for congregational hymns "How Great Thou Art" and "I'm But a Stranger Here". Those serving as pallbearers were: Lawayne Gronau, Bob Andresen, Lorenz Schultz, Leon Clausen, Bill Aldag and Mark Gosch. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them in fellowsip and lunch at the church, served by the Women's Guild. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of arrangements.

Vera Catherine (Wulf) Preul (1926 - 1996)

Vera Catherine Preul was born June 4, 1926, the daughter of Nicholas and Martha Lackman Wulf. She died on Sunday, April 14, 1996 at her home in Deloit, Iowa at the age of sixty-nine.

Vera was born in Stockholm Township near Vail, Iowa and was baptized in Christ on July 11, 1926 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and later confirmed at the Stockholm Lutheran Church. She graduated from the Denison Community High School with the class of 1944. After receiving her Teaching Certificate, she taught in various schools in the Deloit and Kiron area.

On May 20, 1945, Vera was united in marriage to Louis William Preul at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. The couple were blessed with the birth of eight children. Throughout their lives they lived on various farms in Crawford County until 1958, when they moved to Hamlin, Iowa where they were employed for a farmer before returning to Denison in 1980. Vera was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. She was a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother who enjoyed attending sport activities that her grandchildren were involved in. She also loved animals, gardening, sewing and playing bingo.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, three brothers and a son-in-law. Survivors include her husband, Louis; eight children, Allan Preul and his wife, Linda; Ronnie Preul and his wife, Donna; Karen Schurke and her husband, Allen; Marlene Anderson and her friend, John Hatfield all of Denison; Jeanette Meurer and her husband, Don of Harlan; Randy Preul and his wife, Donna of Omaha; Gene Preul of Deloit, Terry Preul and his friend, Leah Friedrichsen of Schleswig; nineteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Harold Wulf of Deloit and Vernon Wulf of Denison; two sisters-in-law, Betty Wulf of Deloit, Katherine Wulf of Denison; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, April 17, 1996 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Pastor Kurt Kaiser and Vicar Andrew Carlson officiated the service and grave side rites held at the St. Paul's Cemetery, Charter Oak, Iowa. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Henry Henningsen singing "The Old Rugged Cross" and "On Eagle's Wings" and congregational hymn "I Know That My Redeemer Lives." Those serving as pallbearers were: Scott Anderson, David Meurer, Daniel Meurer, Jamie Meurer, Darin Schurke, Jason Preul, Greg Schurke, Mike Preul, Chad Preul and Ron Preul. Loreen E. (Ohl) Eyer (1928 - 1999)

Loreen E. Eyer was born November 1, 1928, the daughter of August and Annette Brown Ohl. She died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, Iowa, Tuesday, April 27, 1999 at the age of seventy. Loreen was born near Dunlap, Iowa and received her education at Gallons Grove Country School and the Dunlap High School.

On September 11, 1949, Loreen was united in marriage to Alvin Eyer at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. The couple made their home on the family farm in Hanover Township, Charter Oak. In 1986, Loreen moved to Denison, Iowa where she did cleaning in various homes and business in the Denison area.

Loreen was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Denison and a past member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hanover Township, Charter Oak, where she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for many years and was also a 4-H Leader. She was very fond of taking care of the children at the Presbyterian Church in Denison. Loreen was a very loving and caring mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who was respected by her family. She had a heart of gold, a very straight forward, feisty and spirited person. She was a very hard working person who enjoyed canning, baking, especially sugar cookies and sewing and patching. In her leisure time, she enjoyed watching the birds and squirrels. She also enjoyed spirited games and was a big bingo fan.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Alvin in 1994, one son, Gregory in 1972, one sister, JoAnn Mitchell and one brother, Darrell Ohl.

Survivors include two daughters, Lana Cleveland and her husband, Nick of Woodbine; Annette Stoltze and her husband, Robert Jr. of Charter Oak; two sons, Joe Eyer of Cherokee; Calvin Eyer of Charter Oak; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, her stepfather, Leon Ransom of Denison; two sisters, Loretta Segebart and her husband, Alfred of Battle Creek; Corlys Boysen and her husband, Hubert of Arthur; one brother, Francis Ohl and his wife, Vivian of Woodbine, three sisters-in-law, Virgine Ohl of Denison; Adeline Eyer of Charter Oak; Shirely Eyer of Sloan; many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Friday, April 30, 1999 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. Daniel Gifford officiated the service and grave side rites held at the St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Hanover Township, Charter Oak, Iowa. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Henry Henningsen singing "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and "How Great Thou Art" and congregational hymn "Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound." Those serving as pallbearers were: Matthew Stoltze, Cade Cleveland, Jamie Stoltze, Jason Stoltze, Kelly Ohl and Rick Ohl. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

James Ellis Stern (1922 - 1992)

James Ellis Stern was born Feb. 5, 1922, the son of Earle and Maude Hegwood Stern. He died on Sunday, May 31, 1992 at the Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D., at the age of 70 years.

James was born at his parents' home in Ida Grove, Iowa and received his education in the community school there. He graduated from the Ida Grove High School in 1940. In 1941, he moved with his family to Schleswig, and in 1942, James entered the Army Air Corps. He served his country as an electronics technician in the United States at Madison, Wis., and Chanute Air Force Base near Champaign, Ill., in addition to serving in Algiers in North Africa immediately following WWII.

After having been honorably discharged from the service in 1945, James returned to Schleswig and joined his family in the John Deere implement store they started in 1947 called Stern & Son Implement which they owned and operated until 1959.

On March 17, 1950, James was united in marriage to Valera Stender at the home of her parents in Schleswig. The couple remained in Schleswig and were blessed with two children. For a few years, James drove a school bus for the Schleswig school system and subsequently worked for the Crawford County secondary road maintenance division. He retired in October of 1986 and enjoyed occupying his time reading. He was loving husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed the entertainment of his family. He was a member of the Schleswig fire department for 25 years, the United Church of Christ, the V.F.W. Post No. 3930 and the American Legion Post No. 645, all of Schleswig.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Valera of Schleswig; one daughter, Janice Stern of Iowa City; one son, Kim and his wife, Georgia of Sioux Falls, SD; two granddaughters, Erika and Alexa Stern of Sioux Falls; and one sister, Dracia Bakke of Onawa.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, with Reverend James Schatz officiating the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery at Schleswig. Evelyn Johnson provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Rubie Kastner singing "The Old Rugged Cross" and "How Great Thou Art." Pallbearers included the V.F.W. Post 3930 and the American Legion Post 645. Military Honors were by the V.F.W. Post 3930 and the American Legion Post 645 of Schleswig. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Walter A. Huebner and Sons' Funeral Home of Schleswig.

Orlan Gene Abbe (1929 - 1997)

Orlan Gene Abbe was born September 16, 1929, the son of Albert and Hedwig Koch Abbe. He died at Marian Health Center in Sioux City, Iowa, on January 17, 1997, at the age of sixty-seven.

Orlan was born in Battle Creek, Iowa, and was baptized in Christ on October 13, 1929 and later confirmed on April 18, 1943 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Grant Township. Orlan received his early education in a rural school in Grant Township. After his father died in 1938, he helped his mother on the farm and later worked as a hired man for Bart Bielenberg.

On July 1, 1951, Orlan was united in marriage to Darlene Reimer at the Friedens Church in Schleswig. The couple farmed the family farm near Schleswig until 1993. They moved to Schleswig in August of 1990. Orlan was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig and served as an elder and trustee. He loved cattle, enjoyed socializing with family and friends at a good game of cards, fishing, and the Chicago Cubs. Orlan was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who enjoyed his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father and his brother, Vernis. Survivors include his wife, Darlene; his mother, Hedwig; two sons, Larry, his wife Anne and their children, Deanna, Crystal and Trisha; Terry, his wife Sally and their children, Alexander and Ashton, all of Schleswig; a sister-in-law, Ruby Miller of St. Joseph, Missouri; two nieces, Roberta Taylor and her husband, John of Hastings, Minnesota; Sherry Ranier and her husband, Jim of Hackettstown, New Jersey; a nephew Keith Friedrichsen and his wife, Robin of Schleswig.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 20, 1997, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Merle Mahnken officiated the service and graveside rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Roger Walter singing, "Beyond the Sunset" and "The Lord's Prayer" and congregational hymns, "Lift High the Cross" and "Abide with Me." Margaret Marie (Russmann) Hulsebus (1928 - 1998)

Margaret Marie Hulsebus was born December 2, 1928, the daughter of Fred and Mary Scott Russmann. She died Tuesday, August 11, 1998 at her home in Denison, Iowa at the age of sixty-nine.

Margaret was born in Avoca, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church, Denison. She received her education at the Denison Community Schools, graduating with the class of 1946. Margaret continued her education and received her Normal Teachers Training at Denison, Iowa. After receiving her education, Margaret taught school in Crawford County.

On June 30, 1950, Margaret was united in marriage to Delmar Rath. The couple made their home on a farm northeast of Denison and were blessed with the birth of two children. Margaret worked for the Ad-Visor Office, Crawford County Jail, and was a cashier at Cronk's Restaurant. Margaret also worked at the Two Minnie's Clothing Store, Rural Electric Cooperative, Roscoe's Jewelry, McCord Real Estate Agency and the Crawford County Memorial Hospital.

Margaret was united in marriage to Donald Hulsebus on November 14, 1992 at the Zion Lutheran Church and made their home in Denison. Margaret was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Denison, and Crawford County Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed flowers, traveling, taking photographs and playing cards in her leisure time. Margaret was a very considerate and loving person who enjoyed people and their company.

She was preceded in death by her parents and six brothers. Survivors include her husband, Donald of Denison; one daughter, Vicki Gipson of Fort Wayne, Indiana; one son, Tim Rath and his wife, Pam of Colorado Springs, Colorado; one step-son, Dean Hulsebus and his wife, Susan of Granger; three step-daughters, Linda Cooper and her husband, Tom of Moville; Carol Fink and her husband, Ed; Lori Petersen and her husband, Jeff, all of Denison; three grandsons; twelve step-grandsons and six step-granddaughters; one sister-in-law, Erma Russmann of Arion; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Saturday, August 15, 1998 at the Zion Lutheran Church, Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. Daniel Gifford officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Denison. Leonard Jepsen (1928 - 1993)

Leonard Jepsen was born on August 22, 1928, the son of William and Dora Jahn Jepsen. He died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison on Wednesday evening, December 1, 1993 at the age of sixty-five years.

Leonard was born on the family farm in Goodrich Township near Schleswig, Iowa. He received his education in a rural school near his home and subsequently farmed with his parents and brother Alfred until retiring in the late sixties. He remained on the farm where he lived with his brother, Alfred and sister, LaMorne until 1979 when they moved to their home in Schleswig.

In younger years, Leonard enjoyed fishing and fox hunting and continued to enjoy fishing in more recent years. He enjoyed socializing with family and friends in a game of cards and was challenged by assembling jig-saw puzzles. In recent years, he and his brother, Alfred appreciated the time sight-seeing together in their car. Leonard was a kind and considerate person who loved his family and the time he spent with them. He was a member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig and the Schleswig Community Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, LaMorne and three in infancy; and one infant brother. Survivors include one brother, Alfred of Denison and two sisters, Marian Quandt and her husband, Melvin of Schleswig and Elaine Whitehead and her husband, Kenneth of Omaha, Nebraska. Other survivors include one aunt, Elsa Jepsen of Denison, two nephews, Randy Quandt and his wife, Sherri of Sioux City, Iowa; Roger Quandt of Las Vegas, Nevada; two nieces, Susan Langholtz and her husband, Jeff of Norfolk Nebraska; and Cindy Schwitzer and her husband, Keith of Boulder, Colorado. Also four great-nieces and nephews: Jerry and Jennifer Langholtz at home in Norfolk; and Allison and Andrew Quandt at home in Sioux City.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 4, 1993 at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, Iowa with Rev. James Schatz officiating the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Dorothy Jessen provided the organ accompaniment for Rubie Kastner and Barb Buffum singing "How Great Thou Art" and "Beyond the Sunset." Pallbearers were: Vernon Kuehnhold, Donald Kuehnhold, Melvin Kuehnhold, Wayne Kuehnhold, Herman Jepsen, Fred D. Wiladene Marie (Slechta) Grell (1921 - 2005)

Wiladene Marie Grell was born on the farm east of Vail, Iowa, December 15, 1921, the daughter of Joseph and Agnes Starek Slechta. She was raised there, receiving her education in the rural schools and Vail High School.

On February 24, 1940, Wiladene was united in marriage with Walter Grell at Dow City, Iowa. Their union was blessed with four children, Bonnie, Dean and twins, Ronda and Wanda. They made their home on the farm north of Vail until moving to her present home at Deloit in 1974. Wiladene's adult years were spent caring for her family and as a busy farmwife and homemaker. Other than her family, Wiladene's greatest love was the ponies that she and Walter raised, having them in many parades. Countless area children were thankful to Wiladene and Walt for bringing Santa and Mrs. Claus to Denison at holiday time and afterward, giving hundreds of children rides in the wagon. Through the years thousands of area residents and passersby have experienced and enjoyed Wiladene's love of Christmas from the annual Christmas light displays at her home. In her spare time Wiladene especially loved spending time with her grandchildren, visiting with friends and family, taking care of her immaculate lawn and flowers and embroidery and quilting, having made a quilt for each family member.

Wiladene believed in being active in her community, as well evidenced by her great support of the Crawford County Fair, organizing the sew and show contest, assisting with the fair queen contest and was a twenty year leader of the Happy Helpers 4-H Club. As a lover of horses, she and Walt were charter members of the Silver Spur Riding Association in Denison. Other memberships that brought Wiladene enjoyment include her church, United Presbyterian Church in Vail, the former Helping Neighbors Club at Vail, and the Home and Hobby Club and Christian Women's Club in Denison.

Walter died July 5, 1996, and Wiladene continued to reside at their home at Deloit. Wiladene died late Wednesday, December 14, 2005, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa. At the time of her death she had been blessed with 83 years, 11 months and 29 days.

Wiladene was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Agnes Slechta and her husband, Walter. Those remaining to cherish her memory include four children and their spouses, Bonnie and William C. Winey of Deloit; Dean and Karen Grell of Vail; Ronda and Brant Hollensbe of West Des Moines Iowa and Wanda and the Rev. Kevin Freese of Battle Creek, Iowa; 11 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; one brother, Les Slechta and wife, Millie of Vail, Iowa; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Richard and Donna Grell of Omaha, Nebraska; special friends, Terry Tait, Gerald Riley and Don and Kathryn Fink; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, December 19, 2005, at the United Presbyterian Church in Vail, Iowa, with her son-in-law, the Rev. Kevin J. Freese officiating. Music for the service included soloist Glenn Freese singing, "Under His Wing" and "His Eye Is On The Sparrow" and the congregation singing, "Silent Night" with the Rev. Glenn Rankin serving as organist. Honorary pallbearers were Wiladene's granddaughters, Carmen Hoffmann, Crystal Holt, Jennifer Main, Sonda Jordan, Mia Freese and Amanda Mulligan. Pallbearers were grandsons, Joseph Grell, Justin Freese, Aaron Grell, Jarred Freese and Michael Grell and nephews, Jim Slechta and Denny Lambert. Interment was at the Vail Cemetery, Vail, Iowa. Following the service the family invited everyone to return to the church for fellowship and a meal prepared and served by the United Presbyterian Women. Lester Raymond Weifenbach (1923 - 2005)

Lester Raymond Weifenbach was born in Woodbury County, rural Mapleton, Iowa on January 23, 1923. His parents were Henry F. and Margaret (Young) Weifenbach. Lester was baptized as an infant into the Lutheran faith and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church, Battle Creek on May 9, 1937.

He was raised on a farm in the Battle Creek area and attended country school for eight years at Grant Township #3, known as Progressive Hill School. He graduated from the eighth grade on June 12, 1936, as Salutatorian in a class of one-hundred-twelve students with a grade point average of 94.3. He also received the American Legion Citizenship Award. In 1940, Lester graduated from Battle Creek High School.

Following school he assisted his father in farming. He was drafted into the U.S. Army on March 15, 1946, receiving basic training at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas. Lester attended Veterinary Tech School at Fort Riley, Kansas, and was assigned to Vet. Corp, Maryland Military District, Baltimore, Maryland. He received his honorable discharge on April 19, 1947 at Fort Meade, Maryland.

On January 31, 1947, he was united in marriage to Betty E. Christiansen of Schleswig. They began farming in 1948 near Ida Grove and then in the Schleswig area. In May 1963, Les was appointed Rural Letter Carrier for the Schleswig area and retired in August 1984. He was a member of the Rural Letter Carriers Association, the Postmaster's Auxiliary, and long time member of the Schleswig Community Club. Les served as Secretary of the Crawford County RLCA for 10 years. He also served a term as Vice President of the Southwest District of Iowa RLCA and a term as their President.

Lester and Betty greatly enjoyed camping, making a number of camping trips to the Colorado Rockies, Yellowstone Park and the Black Hills. Additionally the couple enjoyed fishing trips to Minnesota. Following retirement they spent the summers in their mobile home at a resort near Alexandria, Minnesota. They also wintered in Texas for a number of years at Alamo, Texas in the Rio Grande Valley. Lester and Betty were long time members of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. Their four children, Linda, Carol, Jean, and James were all confirmed at Immanuel.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son Jim, daughter Linda, brothers Harold and Edwin, sister Louise Larson and his beloved wife, Betty. Survivors include two daughters, Carol Woebke of Kansas City, Missouri; Jean Robison and her husband, Charles Jr. of Franklin, Tennessee; a daughter-in-law, Lisa Fulton of Plattsmouth, Nebraska; a son-in-law, Thomas Russell of Lebanon, Tennessee; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four sisters-in-law, Arlene Teut of Mapleton; Evelyn Teut and her husband, Donald of Schleswig; Marilyn Neddermeyer and her husband, Herman of Ute; and Irene Weifenbach of Battle Creek; many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 26, 2005 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Lorraine (Schramm) Gunderson (1923 - 2000)

Lorraine Gunderson was born May 4, 1923, the daughter of Ed and Ella Boger Schramm. She died Saturday, July 22, 2000 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa at the age of seventy-seven.

Lorraine was born in Denison, Iowa and was baptized into Christ on September 15, 1923 at Zion Lutheran Church, Denison and later confirmed there on April 10, 1938. She received her education in the Denison Community Schools, graduating with the class of 1941.

On August 16, 1941, Lorraine was united in marriage to Harry Gunderson at the Zion Lutheran Parsonage in Denison by Rev. C.W. Schmidt. The couple made their home in rural Denison and she was blessed with the birth of five children. Lorraine was a devoted member of Zion Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday School for many years. She was active in Extension and Farm Bureau Clubs. In 1956, Lorraine was nominated and honored homemaker of the year in Omaha. In her later years, she worked at various jobs in restaurants and at Dubuque Pack for sixteen years, retiring in 1985. In her leisure time, Lorraine loved spending time with her children and grandchildren sharing the affection of a loving family.

Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Harry, and one son, Gordon on July 31, 1996. Survivors include two daughters, Susan Danielson and her husband, Dean of Denison; Lori Kline and her husband, Dennis of Schleswig; two sons, Stephen Gunderson and his wife, Bonnie of Neenah, Wisconsin; Richard Gunderson and his wife, Diane of Columbia, South Carolina; fourteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; four sisters, Eleanore Miller; Irene Eggert and her husband, Harold; Marie McCord, all of Denison; Vera McLean of San Diego, California; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 25, 2000 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. David Sewing officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "Children of the Heavenly Father", "In the Hour of Trial" and "Jesus Lives! The Victory is Won". Ray Russell Miller (1920 - 1998)

Ray Russell Miller was born September 26, 1920, the son of Robert and Hattie Mohr Miller. He died Saturday, November 21, 1998 at the Eventide Nursing Home in Denison, Iowa at the age of seventy-eight.

Ray was born in Ricketts, Iowa and was baptized and confirmed at the Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Church, Schleswig, Iowa in 1935. He received his education at the Schleswig Community School, graduating with the class of 1937. After completing his education, he moved to California, where he went to work harvesting oranges for a short time.

On September 5, 1939, Ray was united in marriage to Mary Petersen. The couple settled on a farm in Otter Creek Township, Schleswig, Iowa and were blessed with the birth of five children. Ray farmed and was a salesperson and adjustor for Farmers Mutual Insurance Company. The couple retired from farming in 1977 and made their home in Schleswig.

Ray was a member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, where he served on the Church Council and Property and Auditing Committee. He served as mayor of the City of Schleswig from January 1988 through November 1990 and on the Board of Directors of the Farmer's Lumber and Grain; Farmers Mutual Insurance Association; Morgan Cemetery Association and the Schleswig Retirement apartments. He was a very loving and caring person who loved to bowl and attended football and basketball games.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary; and one sister, Ruby Nelson. Survivors include four daughters, Patricia Jensen and her husband, Dale of Schleswig, Virginia Miller, Linda Renner, Carol Bogacz and her husband, John; one son, Dennis Miller and his wife, Kathy, all of Omaha; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, November 25, 1998 at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Gordon Hoyt officiated the service and graveside rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Dorothy Jessen provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Rubie Kastner, singing "Nearer, My God, to Thee" and "How Great Thou Art". Pallbearers were: Darryl Petersen, LaWayne Gronau, Keith Petersen, Doug Hollander, Darrell Miller and Neil McGinn. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Women's Guild. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of arrangements.

Herbert Gustav Schau (1912 - 1971)

Herbert Gustav Schau son of Gustav Schau, mother Alvina Nee Dethlefs was born Oct. 27 1912 at Ricketts.He was baptized and confirmed in St. Paul's church in Hanover township.

He married Hilda Reimers at Schleswig on Sept. 25,1940 and to this union six sons were born. His entire life was spent in the Charter Oak community and he was employed for Crawford county.

He died on Aug. 10, 1971 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital after a long illness. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Dennis.

He is survived by his wife, Hilda: five sons, Kenneth of Charter Oak, Merlin, Dewayne, Ronald and Gary at home, one grandson Robie, One sister Mrs. Alfred (Anna) Schulz, a brother Hans Schau both of Charter Oak, one half brother Clifford Baak of Newell. He attained the age of 58 years, nine months and 14 days.

Funeral services were held Aug.12 at 2:30 pm at St. John's Lutheran church in Charter Oak, Rev. Albert Prouty officiated. Burial was in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery in Charter Oak with Huebner Funeral home in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were Elmer Bockelmann, William Kuhlmann, Albert Whitenack, Ivan Ewold, Wilbert Prussing and Ray Wiegel.

Herman E. Reimers (1888 - 1980)

Herman E. Reimers was born on Nov. 3,1888 in Otter Creek Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the son of John H. and Ottilia Stegemann Reimers. He died on Sunday November 9,1980 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison Iowa at the age of 92.

Herman was raised on a farm in Otter Creek Township. He was baptized as an infant at home and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grant Township. Herman received his early education in the rural schools near his home. He later attended the West Brick School in Denison.

After attending the Denison Normal and Business College in Denison, Herman served in the U.S Army during World War I. Upon his release from the military he returned to Iowa. He farmed near Schleswig from 1922 until 1949 when he retired and moved to Schleswig. Later in 1968 he made his home with his newphew Clifford Reimers until 1975, when due to ill health he entered Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison. Herman was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. He was also a member of the Schleswig American Legion and V.F.W.

In addition to his parents, Herman was preceded in death by five brothers, three sisters and one neice. Survivors include, five nephews, Clifford Reimers, Wilbur Reimers, John Reimers, George Reimers and Otto Reimers and eight neices, Elsie Reimers, Anne Reimers, Mrs. Lucille Ress, Mrs. Hilda Schau, Mrs. Ida Day, Mrs. Leona Beckstrand, Mrs. Helen Buffum and Mrs. Edna Gardels. Also by a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday November 12,1980 at 10:30 am at the Immanuel Lutheran Church Schleswig, Iowa. The Rev. Theodore Letzring officiated at the services. Pallbearers and full military rites were provided by the Schleswig American Legion and V.F.W. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig, Iowa.

Herman Fredrick Rusch (1899 - 1974)

Herman Fredrick Rusch, 75 of Mapleton, died June 26,1974 at a Sioux City Hospital after a long illness. Services were held at 10:00 am. July 1 in St. Peter United Church of Christ at Mapleton. The Rev. Homer Perry officiated. Burial was in the Morgan Township Cemetery at Schleswig.

Mr. Rusch was born February 28,1899 at Schleswig. He married Marie Backhaus April 11,1917 at Schleswig. The couple farmed near there and moved to near Mapleton in 1919. They retired to Mapleton in 1949. Mr. Rusch was a member of St. Peter United Church of Christ 40 years, serving on its board of directors.

He was active in the Agriculture Stabilization Conservation Service (ASCS) from 1934 to 1955. He also served on the school board of St. Clair Township for a number of years.

Survivors include the widow: two daughters, Mrs. Lenhardt (Lavone) Fick of Estherville and Mrs. Edwin (Darline) Clausen of Mapleton : four sisters, Mrs. Ella Jahde of Castana, Mrs. Margaret Clausen of Bruce Wisconsin, Mrs. Elizabeth Clausen of Strom Lake and Mrs. Charles (Meta) Weir of Sioux City.

Herman Hans Boyens (1898 - 1971)

Herman Hans Boyens, son of Hans Boyens and his wife Marie (Johannsen) Boyens was born November 18, 1898 in Goodrich Township, Crawford County Iowa. He was baptized in early infancy and later confirmed in the Lutheran Faith after attending the public and Lutheran Schools. In 1914 he moved to Hanover Township.

He was married to Minnie (Jaacks) Boyens on February 22, 1922 and after their marriage they lived on the present home in Hanover Township. He passed away rather suddenly on Monday November 15 at 3 pm.

Surviving are his widow, Minnie two daughters: Marian, Mrs. Edmund Petersen of Charter Oak and Laverne, Mrs. Laverne Christiansen of Denison, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Also surviving are two brothers Edward and William of Denison, and one sister Minnie, Mrs. Rudolph Schwitzer of Denison.

He was a lifelong member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Denison and a voting member for many years. He also served as elder for several years.

Funeral services were held Thursday November 18, 1971 at 10:30 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison with Rev. C.W. Schmidt, officiating. Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist and hymns were sung by Henry Henningsen. Interment was made in the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens at Denison, with the following serving as pallbearers: Melvin Boyens, Vern Cooper, Richard Jaacks, Robert Jaacks, Roger Jaacks and Eldor Schwitzer. Huebner Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Herman Schiernbeck (1891 - 1975)

Funeral services for Herman Schiernbeck were held Tuesday July 15, 1975 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig with Rev. Theo. Letzring officiating. Mrs. Leroy Hight was the organist. The congregation sang "Rock of Ages" and the choir sang "What a Friend We Have In Jesus".

Herman Schiernbeck, son of William Schiernbeck and Emma nee Koch Schiernbeck was born September 5, 1891 at Davenport, Iowa. At the age of five, he moved with his parents to a farm near Kiron, Iowa.

On January 2, 1914 he was united in marriage to Susie Hansohn at Stockholm Township. Mr. and Mrs. Schiernbeck lived on the home place near Kiron until they retired in Schleswig in 1967. Mr. Schiernbeck was in poor health for over a year when he died at his home on July 2, 1975 at the age of 83 years, 9 months and 12 days.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons Leonhard and Lloyd, an infant daughter, five sisters and two brothers.

Survivors include his wife, Susie, one son Leslie of Omaha, Nebraska, one daughter-in-law, two grandsons and two great-grand-sons.

Pallbearers were Clarence Bielenberg, Virtus Hollander, Irwin Schultz, Herbert Miller, Irwin Kastner and Clarence Jahde. Interment was in Morgan Cemetery at Schleswig.

Herman V. Kahl Jr. (1925 - 1969)

Herman V. Kahl Jr. son of Herman and Hattie Boger Kahl Sr. was born June 29, 1925 on a farm south of Denison and died April 10 (1969) in a tractor accident near his farm home at Buck Grove at the age of 43 years. He was baptized in infancy at the Zion Lutheran church in Denison by Rev. Greene in the St. John's Lutheran church in Buck Grove.

On April 8, 1945 he was married to Doris Burmeister at Buck Grove. They made their home on a farm west of Buck Grove until 1947 when they moved to their presnt farm. To this union three sons and two daughters were born.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents. He is survived by his wife, five children, Kenneth of Council Bluffs, Donald of Dow City, Pamela, Mrs. Mike LeKron of Wichita Kan, Kathryn and Trent at home, his parents Mr. and Mrs. Herman Kahl of Dow City, one brother Earl of Denison, four sisters Mrs. Dorothy Hulsebus of Dow City, Mrs. Norma Jean Petersen and Mrs. Donna Mae Ahart of Denison and Mrs. Arlyn Schulz of New Ulm, Minn.

Funeral services were held Monday April 4 at 10 am in the Lutheran church in Denison with Rev. S.W Holstein officiating. Comfort music was provided by Mrs. Fred Rabe as organist and the Lutheran Ladies Choir. Pallbearers were Lester Hulsebus, Leroy Koch Jr., Louis W. Petersen, Ernest Ahrenholtz, Leonard Koch and Elmer Petersen. Interment was in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison, with Huebner Funeral Home officiating.

Vernon Henry Janssen (1924 - 1982)

Vernon Henry Janssen was born on May 31, 1924 at Buck Grove, Iowa, the son of Henry and Emma Janssen. He died Nov. 22, 1982 at the Crawford County Hospital, Denison, at the age of 58. Vernon was baptized as an infant and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith at St. John's Lutheran Church in Buck Grove. He spent his early years on a family farm near Buck Grove. Vernon received his formal education in the rural schools near his home.

On June 18, 1947, Vernon was united in marriage to Viola Frey in Buck Grove. Together they farmed in the Buck Grove community. Vernon was active with his farming career. He served on the American Milk Producers Board. Active in his church all of his life, Vernon held various offices and served as an elder. He was also on the Board of Directors of the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison.

Vernon was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife Viola of Buck Grove, two sons, George and Curtis of Buck Grove, two daughters, Lana, Mrs. Dennis Wellsandt of Kiron and Ruth Janssen at home. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Arlene Block and Vera, Mrs. Harry Stover both of Denison, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Nov. 24, at 2 p.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Burial was in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens. The Rev. Paul Stengel officiated at the services. Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist with the congregation singing, The Will of God Is Always Best, The Lord's My Shepherd and What A Friend We Have In Jesus. Pallbearers were Howard Holmes, Harry Martens, Ross Cadwell, Allan Arkfeld, Les Anderson and Gilbert Carstens. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Shirley Joann (Christiansen) Gehring (1925 - 1983)

Shirley Joann Gehring was born on Jan. 15, 1925 at Denison, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Adeline Wiese Christiansen. She died May 7, 1983 at the Bishop Clarkson Hospital in Omaha, Neb. at the age of 58.

Shirley was reared in the farm community of Crawford County. She received her education in the rural schools near her home. As an infant, Shirley was baptized and later during the years of her education was confirmed in the Lutheran faith.

On June 2, 1943, Shirley was united in marriage to Edward Gehring at St. John's Lutheran Church in Stockholm Township. Together they made their first home in Boyer. Shirley remained in Boyer during the time after that Edward served in the military during World War II. After his release, they remained in Boyer for a brief time before starting a farming career. Together they farmed in Crawford and later Sac counties. For seventeen years, Shirley was employed as part of the nursing staff at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison.

Shirley was preceded in death by her mother. Survivors include, her husband, Edward of Odebolt; one son, Delayne and his wife Barbara of Madera, Calif.; one daughter, LaDonna and her husband Robert Miller of Odebolt; by her father, Henry Christiansen of Denison and four grandchildren. Also surviving are three brothers, Bonard Christiansen of Schleswig, Dale Christiansen of Rochelle, Ill., and Melroy Christiansen of Kiron and two sisters, Mrs. Beverly Hammer of Boone, and Phyllis (Mrs. Loyal) Brotherson of Denison.

Funeral services were held May 10, at 10:00 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Stockholm Township. Burial was in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens near Denison. The Rev. Paul Wiegert officiated at the services. Mrs. Linda Wiegert served as organist with Henry Henningsen as soloist. Hymns for the service included, The Lord's Prayer, What A Friend We Have In Jesus and I Know That My Redeemer Lives. Pallbearers were Howard Brotherson, Steven Christiansen, Eric Hammer, Dana Christiansen, James Kropf and David Dersien. Honorary bearers were Don Cowlham, Don Pudenz, Everett Fertig, George Cowlham, Louis Thiede and Ralph Cowlham.

Norbert Herman Wordekemper (1922 - 2007)

Norbert Herman Wordekemper was born at Willey, Iowa, September 11, 1922, the son of Godfrey and Mary Korves Wordekemper. The family resided at Willey until 1932 when they moved to the farm north of Vail, Iowa. He received his education in the rural schools at Willey and Vail.

During World War II, from December 12, 1942, until his discharge, January 8, 1946, Norbert served his country in the United States Army in the Western Pacific Theater. Upon his discharge Norbert returned to the farm north of Vail where he was a grain and cattle farmer all of his life. Following his retirement he continued to reside on the farm. He was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Vail and the American Legion Post 607, Breda, Iowa. In his spare time he enjoyed socializing with friends and attending dances.

Norbert died Thursday afternoon, March 29, 2007, at the Carroll Health Center in Carroll, Iowa. At the time of his death he had been blessed with 84 years, 6 months and 18 days.

Norbert was preceded in death by his parents, Godfrey and Mary Wordekemper, two brothers, Henry and Melvin Wordekemper and two sisters, Margaret and Bernice Wordekemper.

Those remaining to cherish his memory include one brother, Lawrence Wordekemper and wife, Marie of Denison, two sisters, Helen Langenfeld of Harlan, Iowa, and Alice Roling of Early, Iowa, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, April 3, 2007, at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Vail, Iowa, with the Rev. John M. Thomas as Celebrant. Other participants in the mass included Jeff Fitzsimmons serving as Lector and Caitlin, Hannah and Megan Wordekemper serving as gift bearers. Music for the Mass was provided by St. Ann's Adult Choir with Irene Feilmeier serving as organist. Military Honors were provided by the Vail American Legion Post 65 and Westside American Legion Post 196. Interment was at St. Ann's Catholic Cemetery in Vail, Iowa. Following the interment the family invited everyone to join them at the Vail Community Building for a time of fellowship and a meal prepared and served by the St. Ann's Parish Group. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa, was in charge of arrangements where on Monday, April 3, 2007, a Legion of Mary Rosary was prayed at 4:30 p.m. and a Parish Vigil Service, led by Father John M. Thomas, was held at 7:00 p.m.

Merlin Jurgensen (1923 - 2001)

Merlin Jurgensen was born February 27, 1923 at Manning, Iowa, the son of Hans Jurgensen and Pauline Asmus. He died Sunday, July 1, 2001 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa at the age of seventy-eight. He attended rural schools in Manning and Aspinwall. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church at Manning, Iowa.

On September 16, 1943 he married Irene Isaacs at the Lutheran Church in Arcadia, Iowa. To this union two children were born, Gloria and Bonnie. Merlin was a kind and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His special interests were his family, farming, yard work and gardening. In addition to farming he worked for Manning Creamery Farm, Denison Seed Company and Pinkerton Company.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Irene of Denison; two daughters, Gloria Kuehnhold and special friend, Tom Austin of Denison; Bonnie and her husband, Duane Beyerink of Westside; six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; one sister, Arlene Nissen of Des Moines, Iowa, and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 4, 2001 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Merle Mahnken officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Manning Cemetery. Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "What a Friend We Have in Jesus", "Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me" and "Just as I Am, Without One Plea". Pallbearers were Freddie Friedrichsen, Gaylen Jepsen, Steven Schmidt, Jim Schmidt, John Cassens and Allen Thams. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Norma Ann (Anderson) Schwarz (1929 - 2006)

Norma Ann Schwarz was born October 6, 1929, the daughter of Levi and Barbara Anderson. She died Wednesday, May 17, 2006 at the Community Memorial Hospital in Missouri Valley, Iowa at the age of seventy-six. Norma was born in Kiron, Iowa and baptized in Christ on March 8, 1942. After completing her education she taught school in Schleswig and Bedford, Iowa.

On May 23, 1954, Norma was united in marriage to James Schwarz in Schleswig, Iowa. After Jim's discharge from the military service, the couple lived in California until 1956, when they returned to Iowa, making their home in Schleswig. Norma went back to teaching at the Zion Lutheran School in Denison.

She was confirmed on February 10, 1957 and became a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. She enjoyed socializing with family and friends, loved children and visits from school children and had a smile for everyone. In her leisure time, Norma enjoyed the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs, even knew the statistics of players. She also enjoyed watching television, especially football, basketball and game shows, and the challenge of a crossword or jigsaw puzzle. You could also find Norma involved in a card game of Euchre or Solitaire.

Norma was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, James in 1984, and two brothers, Duane and Ronald Anderson. Survivors include one daughter, Gail Hicks and her husband, Bill of Dunlap; one son, Mitchell Schwarz and his wife, Rebecca of Schleswig; five grandsons and three great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 20, 2006 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Merle Mahnken officiated the services and grave side rites held at Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Organist Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for the congregational hymns, "Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound", "In the Garden" and "Nearer, My God to Thee". Those serving as pallbearers were, Zachary Schwarz, Mike Anderson, Chad Hicks, Aaron Schwarz, Andrew Hicks and Will Hicks. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them in fellowship and lunch served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of the arrangements.

William L. Mullenger (1927 - 1993)

William L. Mullenger was born in Nishnabotna Township on May 17, 1927 to William Richard and Hazel Jane Shives Mullenger. Bill received his education from local schools and was graduated from the Denison High School with the class of 1945. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Division of the U.S. Navy on Dec. 29, 1950 and served until July 16, 1951. Bill was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Denison and also was a member of the American Legion.

Bill passed away at the Manning General Hospital in Manning, on Saturday evening, May 29, 1993. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 66 years and 12 days. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Donna Asmus.

Those left to cherish his memory are three sons, W.A. (Tony) of Iowa City, Todd and his wife Mary of Brentwood, TN, and Toby of Milwaukee, WI; two grandsons, William Brandon and Markus Ryan; one brother Keith and his wife Adrienne of Arizona; two sisters Lavonne and her husband Michael Flynn and Karen and her husband Michael Moreland, both of California; nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 2, 1993, at the First United Methodist Church in Denison, with the Reverend Dr. Edward Peterson officiating. Vocal selections were "Amazing Grace" and the "Lord's Prayer." Soloist was Mr. Henry Henningsen and Mrs. Karen Kahl served as organist. Honorary pallbearers included Earl Shives, Fred Strissel, Gilbert Shives, Donald Yankey, Reiney Mundt, and Mike Gross. Active pallbearers included Wendell Rollins, William Norelius, Vic McCarthy, Pat Houston, Buford Shives, and Barney Shives. Interment was in the Oakland Cemetery in Denison. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Paul Dwight Mahoney (1920 - 1971)

Paul Mahoney died Sunday morning after suffering a heart attack in Schleswig, while weighing cattle at Feeders' Supply. Funeral services were held Wednesday, September 29, 1971 at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. Rev. R. J. Ratzlaff officiated. Mrs. G. M. Johnson was the organist and Mrs. Harlan Buffum sang "Rock of Ages" and "Beyond the Sunset".

Paul Dwight Mahoney, son of Roy and Carrie, nee Petersen, Mahoney was born June 15, 1920 in Magnolia, Iowa. He was married to Viola Lewis on November 7, 1942 in Omaha.

He has been in the trucking and feed business in Schleswig for the past 21 years. He was a member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. He operated Schleswig Transfer, Mahoney's Skelly Service, and Mahoney's Gooch Feed Service. He was a member of the Schleswig Fire Department, Schleswig Community Club and Schleswig Business Men's Club. He is a past president of the Community Club. He was a loyal supporter of the Schleswig 5-Calf project.

Survivors include his wife Viola, two daughters, Phyllis (Mrs. Leon Clausen) of Schleswig and Lois of Onawa; one son Richard of Lincoln, Nebraska; six grandchildren; and two sisters Mrs. Paul (Marcella) Buffum, and Mrs. James (Eileen) Bryceson of Pisgah. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Pallbearers were Ray Abbe, Gordon Aldag, Melvin Miller, Burdell Jensen, Gerald Sonksen and Bart Bielenberg. Interment was in the Morgan Cemetery.

Lester Bernard Krueger (1925 - 2001)

Lester Bernard Krueger was born March 30, 1925, the son of Bernard and Amelia Eichstead Krueger. He died at the Dunlap Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Dunlap, Monday, November 5, 2001 at the age of seventy-six.

Lester was born in Soldier Township, on a farm north west of Charter Oak, Iowa. He grew up on the farm. He received his education in a rural school near his home, and continued to work on the farm until entering the U.S. Army on September 18, 1943. He served his country as a rifleman in England and France with the Fourth Armored Division and saw combat in battles and campaigns of Normandy, North France and the Rhineland. The decorations and citations he earned were: Victory Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, with three Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, and one Overseas Bar. After his discharge February 23, 1946, Lester returned to Crawford County.

On May 6, 1969, Lester was united in marriage to Ila Lownes. The couple lived in Charter Oak where he served the community of Charter Oak as town maintenance man from 1971 to 1987 when he retired. On March 12, 1999, Lester moved to the Dunlap Care Center.

In his leisure time, Lester enjoyed traveling and working with his hands. He enjoyed the out of doors, and always worked at fixing things. He was happiest when he had a hammer in hand. He also enjoyed socializing at a game of cards, and caring for stray animals. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Charter Oak and the American Legion Post 66 in Charter Oak.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Martin, Adolph and Arthur Krueger. Survivors include his wife, Ila in Charter Oak; one stepdaughter, Janice Kitchenmaster and her husband, Arvin of Hawarden, Iowa; one stepson, Dennis Lownes and wife, Wanda of Treynor, Iowa; eight step-grandchildren, four step-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Edward Krueger and wife, Alma of Danbury, Iowa; Loren Krueger of Charter Oak; one sister, Helma Ladwig and husband, Bill of Denison; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, November 8, 2001 at the United Methodist Church in Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. Ken Baughman officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Charter Oak Cemetery. Joyce Hanson provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Jim Riley singing "How Great Thou Art" and congregational hymns "In the Garden" and "The Old Rugged Cross". Those serving as pallbearers were: Bill Kitchenmaster, DeWayne Krueger, Fred Krueger, Nick Lownes, Ken Krueger, Bill Ladwig and Bill Butler. Military Honors were Homer Hall Post 66, Charter Oak, Iowa. Leonard A. Meggers (1921 - 2007)

Leonard A. Meggers was born February 4, 1921, the son of Alfred and Elizabeth Jaacks Meggers. He died August 20, 2007 at Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa at the age of eighty-six. Leonard was baptized in Christ December 14, 1921 and confirmed March 21, 1934 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, and also attended Lutheran school there.

On February 1, 1947, he was united in marriage to Joyce Brink and were blessed with the birth of four children, Carolyn, Kathy, Jim, and Jeff. He worked as a farm hand for Eddie Christiansen for many years in addition to working for the telephone company and the railroad. Leonard was also employed at IBP, and continued working there until his retirement. He enjoyed his grandchildren, fishing, and playing cards with his friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Elizabeth Meggers; his wife, Joyce; his son, Jeff; three brothers, Emil, Edward, and Marvin; three sisters, Minnie Frank; Edna Igou; and Esther Namanny.

Survivors include his children, Carolyn Nelson and her husband, Earl of Denison; Kathy Cornelius and her husband, Rick of Odebolt; and Jim Meggers and his special friend, Brenda Petersen of Dow City; nine grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mag Christiansen of Dow City; and Irene Jepsen of Schleswig; sisters-in-law; brothers-in-law; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m., Friday, August 24, 2007 at the United Methodist Church in Dow City, Iowa. Pastor Tom Petersen officiated the services and grave side rites held at the Dow City Cemetery in Dow City. Organist Jeanette Kuhlmann provided accompaniment for soloist EveVonne Muff as she sang "On Eagle's Wings," and for the congregational hymns "Amazing Grace," and "In the Garden." Those serving as pallbearers were Dennis Nelson, David Nelson, Cory Klink, Josh Meggers, Chris Klink, Cole Klink, and Chris Terwilleger. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them for fellowship and lunch at the Dow City Community Building, served by the Methodist Women. Mary L (Petersen) Miller (1920 - 1978)

Mary L. Miller was born on April 10, 1920 at Otter Creek Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the daughter of Fritz and Clara Grill Petersen. She died on Monday, May 29, 1978, at St. Joseph Hospital, Sioux City, Iowa, at the age of 58. Mary was raised in Otter Creek Township and received her formal education in the rural schools of the area. She was baptized and confirmed as an adult.

On September 5, 1939, Mary was united in marriage to Ray Miller at Denison, Iowa. Together they lived and farmed in the Schleswig area. In January 1977 they retired and moved to Schleswig where they have since made their home.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include her husband, Ray of Schleswig, five children, Patricia, Mrs. Dale Jensen of Schleswig, Virginia Miller of Schleswig, Dennis of Omaha, Nebraska, Linda, Mrs. Robert Renner and Carol Jean Miller both of Omaha. Also by five grandchildren, three brothers, Rowland Petersen of Denison, Harry Petersen of Deloit, and Melvin Petersen of Schleswig and by four sisters, Ruth, Mrs. Pete McGinn of Denison, Lois, Mrs. Carl Miller of Mapleton, Dorothy, Mrs. Ray Pollock of Vail and Henrietta, Mrs. Eldo Hollander of Ida Grove.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, June 1, 1978, at 2:00 p. m. at the United Church of Christ, Schleswig. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery. The Rev. Fred Moore officiated at the services. Pallbearers included Herman Carstens, Allen Janssen, Harry Gierstorf, Emmett Hollander, Elmer Reimer and Alfred Petersen.

Robert M. Flanigan (1933 - 2006)

Robert M. (Bob) Flanigan, 73, of Sioux City and formerly of Charter Oak, Iowa died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2006 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.

The Funeral Mass was held Wednesday, November 22, 2006 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton, Iowa with Msgr. Mark Duchaine officiating. Burial was in the Danbury Catholic Cemetery at Dan bury, Iowa. Visitation was held Tuesday, November 21 after 2:00 p.m. at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Robert Michael (Bob) Flanigan was born January 20, 1933, in Sioux City, Iowa to Martin and Henrietta (Murphy) Flanigan. He attended Soldier Township #5 rural school and beyond that, he was an avid reader and self-educated.

Bob was a farmer from his early childhood, working with his father and brothers on the family farm near Ricketts, Iowa. In later years, he farmed in the Mapleton, Danbury and Charter Oak area, until he was forced to retire after being injured in a fire in April 2006.

Bob was also an entrepreneur and was always willing to try a new venture. In partnership with his brother Joe, he owned an International Truck Dealership and the Mapleton Motor Company in Mapleton, Iowa. The brothers were also partners in Flanigan Brothers Grain for several years. He also started the South Sioux City Pet Spa. For the past 30 years, Bob spent part of each winter in Arizona, where he bought and refurbished houses for resale and bought cars for his Shamrock Cars business.

Bob was happiest when he could spend time having a beer with friends and reminiscing about old times. He always enjoyed stopping at small town pubs and making friends with the local residents. Bob had the Irish gift for story telling and he could find the humor in almost any situation. He was a very caring and giving son, brother and friend, always ready to help when needed. He will be truly missed by all whose lives he touched.

Survivors include one sister, JoAnne (Don) Seufert of Ute, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Nora Flanigan and Darlene Flanigan both of Mapleton; 12 nieces and nephews; Mary (Bob) Nelson of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Marty (Lynette) Flanigan of Mapleton, Benita (Roger) Uhl of Mapleton; Joann (Tim) Treiber of Danbury, Mike (Tammy) Flanigan of Mapleton, Bryan Flanigan of Mapleton, Dennis (Melissa) Flanigan of Sioux City, Colleen (Bob) Henderson of Ute, Joe (Jodi) Seufert of Carroll, Iowa, Trish Garton of Sioux City, Iowa, Jim Seufert of Aurora, Colorado, Sheila (Lance) Odom of Eagle, Nebraska; 12 great nephews and 13 great nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Joseph and Donald Flanigan.

"Wind Beneath My Wings" was played following the mass. Military Honors were accorded by the American Legion Post 8, Denison, Iowa. Inurnment will take place at a later date. Following the mass the family invited everyone to the St. Rose Parish Center for a time of fellowship and a luncheon prepared and served by St. Rose of Lima Ladies Guild. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in -charge of arrangements.

Robert Reynold Hagge (1936 - 2001)

Robert Reynold Hagge was born June 11, 1936, the son of Reynold and Henrietta Stoffers Hagge. He died Tuesday, March 27, 2001 at the St Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll, Iowa at the age of sixty-four.

Robert was born in Carroll, Iowa and received his education in a rural school in Hayes Township and graduated from the Westside High School in 1954. During his high school years he enjoyed participating in basketball and baseball. After completing his education Robert farmed with his father, until entering the United States Army in 1955. He received his honorable discharge in 1957 and returned home to the 1868 family century farm.

In 1958, Robert was married to Joyce Schiernbeck and were blessed with the birth of four children, Kevin, Michael, Randy and Brenda.

On March 1, 1991, Robert was united in marriage to Phyllis Denker at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Together they enjoyed traveling on cruises and bus tours.

Robert was a member of the United Church in Westside. He was also a member of the Alfred Rossman American Legion Post No. 196, the Diamond Lodge No. 422 A.M. and F.M. of Vail and a lifelong member of Schuetzen Verein. He was a very loving husband, father and grandfather who loved spending time with his family. Robert loved farming and in his leisure time he enjoyed bowling, golfing, socializing in cards and dancing.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Joyce, one son, Kevin, two granddaughters, Elizabeth Hagge and Kristy Jo Petersen.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis of Westside; children, Michael Hagge and his wife, Rhonda of Carroll; Randy Hagge and his fiancee, Delia of Westside; Brenda Petersen and her husband, Ross of Vail; daughter-in-law, Jane Hagge of Vail; step-children, Rhonda Cool and her husband, John of Gladstone, Missouri; Deanna Lownes and her husband, Kirby of Gilbert; Linda Thomas and her husband, Jim of Des Moines; Lori Schneckloth and her friend, Paul Trucke of Denison; Lisa Dollerschell and her husband, Scott of Sioux City; seven grandchildren and sixteen step-grandchildren; one sister, Janice Monson and her husband, Duane of Manning; many other relatives and friends.

Robert Segebart, age 64, of lda Grove, Iowa, died Friday, May 25, 2001, at the John Stoddard Cancer Center at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove, with Reverends John Schauer and Michael Saylor officiating. Burial followed in the Morgan Township Cemetery, rural Schleswig, Iowa. Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Ida Grove handled the arrangements.

Born May 1, 1937, at Dow City, Iowa, Robert was the son of John and Margaret (Krayenhagen) Segebart. As a child, he was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith. Bob grew up and received his education in Ida County country schools. He served in the Army National Guard until receiving a medical discharge in 1959.

On May 2, 1959, Bob was united in marriage to Darlene Ann Lamaak in Fairmont, Minnesota. The couple made their home in Lake View, Iowa, where Bob worked for Lake View Concrete Products Company for several years. They then moved to Schleswig where Bob was employed as a mechanic at Hollander Motors for nearly 20 years, and also farmed from 1975-1978. Following a move to LaHabra, California, Bob found enjoyment as head mechanic over a fleet of trucks, pickups, and machinery with CAL-RUSS Construction Company. In 1990, he became disabled following a fall onto concrete.

Bob and Darlene returned to Iowa in 1992, and spent the last 6 1/2 years living part-time in Parker, Colorado, helping to care for their special needs grandson, Jacob Zanger. Bob loved farming, and was a very good mechanic and handyman, helping many, many people over the years. As his four-year-old grandson, Zachary, would say, "Papa can fix anything!" He will be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Julie Ann Hanson in 1990, and son-in-law, Henry George Zanger III.

Survivors include his wife, Darlene; one daughter, Jodi Lynn Zanger of Parker, Colorado; two grandsons, Jacob T. Zanger and Zachary M. Zanger; one brother and his wife, Alvin and Darlene Segebart of Battle Creek, Iowa; three sisters, Helen Ericksen and her husband, Lyle of Holstein, Ruth Johnson of Odebolt, and Lucille Dierenfield and her husband, Ralph of Schleswig, Iowa; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
