Louise Margaret (Carstensen) Saggau (1911 - 1981)

Louise Margaret Saggau was born July 9, 1911 at Milford Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the daughter of Hans and Cecelia Ohde Carstensen. She died Jan 24, 1981 at Eventide Lutheran Home, Denison, at the age of 69.

Louise spent her early years on a family farm. Later her family moved to Denison. She completed her education in the Zion Lutheran School.

Louise was united in marriage to Carl Edward Saggau on Nov. 3, 1935 at Denison. They made their home in Denison where they operated a business. Mr. Saggau died in 1951 after which, Louise continued to operate their business for many years. Louise was baptized as an infant and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Zion Lutheran Church. She has been a member of Zion Lutheran Church all of her life.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Louise was preceded in death by one brother Lawrence.

Survivors include one brother Raymond of Denison and a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Jan. 27 at 2 p.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church, Denison. Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery. The Rev. Jack Heck officiated at the services. Serving as pallbearers were Vernon Carstensen, Robert Carstensen, Russell Bubke, Rick Carstensen, Larry Carstensen and Dale Carstensen. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Mary Irene (Keating) Christensen (1912 - 2002)

Mary Irene Keating Christensen was born in Denison, Iowa February 17, 1912, the daughter of James and Nora Fitzpatrick Keating. She died Sunday, February 17, 2002 at her home in Vail, Iowa at the age of ninety.

Irene received her elementary education in country schools and St. Rose of Lima Catholic School. She graduated from Denison High School in 1931. After graduation she attended Buena Vista College in Storm Lake where she received her teaching certificate and spent the following four years teaching in East Boyer country schools in the Charter Oak - Soldier area.

On May 29, 1935 she was united in marriage to Oscar Christensen at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison, Iowa and they were blessed with the birth of four children. The couple owned and operated a Standard Oil Service Station in Denison until 1940 at which time they moved to a farm south of Vail. In 1951 they purchased a farm north of Vail and has been the homestead since. Irene remained on the farm following Oscar's death in 1991.

Irene was a kind and loving wife and mother who worked very hard attending the needs of her family. Throughout her life she devoted herself to helping and caring not only for her family and friends, but anyone she was able to help in any way. She was noted for her excellent bread baking and spent many hours baking, cooking, sewing, gardening and canning.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar in 1991, three brothers, James, an adopted brother, Leo, a brother in infancy, one sister, Loretta at the age of nine and four brothers-in-law, Louis Riddle, Les Beerman, Louis Evers and Mark Huebner.

Survivors include three daughters, Marie Baumhover and her husband, Jim; Loretta Christensen; Pat Mielk and her husband, Jim, all of Carroll; and one son, Bob Christensen of Vail. Also seventeen grandchildren and twenty-five great-grandchildren; five sisters, Marie Evers of Soldier; Lucille Gallagher and her husband Arnold of Manilla; Marg Malam of Waterloo; Kaye Riddle of Carroll; Rita Huebner of Omaha; two sisters-in-law, Marie Keating and Anna Keating, both of Denison. Also surviving are many are many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, February 20, 2002 at the St. Ann Catholic Church in Vail, Iowa. Fr. John Thomas served as Celebrant and Fr. Robert Brown served as Con-celebrant. Irene Feilmeier provided the organ accompaniment for the St. Ann's Family Choir. Honorary pallbearers were Lori Christensen, Lisa Christensen and Jodi Christensen. Pallbearers were B.J. Christensen, Kevin Baumhover, Mike Mielk and Dan Mielk. A Legion of Mary Rosary was held at 4:00 p.m. and a Scriptural Wake Service at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Huebner Funeral Home. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Altar Society. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Raymond H. Schmidt (1910 - 1998)

Raymond H. Schmidt was born on November 26, 1910 on a farm in Otter Creek Township Crawford County, Iowa, the son of George and Clara Petersen Schmidt. He died at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison on Friday, September 11, 1998 at the age of 87 years.

Ray was baptized at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison on March 5, 1911 and later confirmed there in 1923. His education began in a rural school near his home and later graduated from the eighth grade from Zion Lutheran School in Denison. After finishing his education, he began working for Fred Brodersen Electric and Appliance Store in Denison, and then went to work for his father on the family farm in Otter Creek Township.

On August 17, 1932 Ray was united in marriage to Garnet Else. The couple settled in Schleswig where Ray drove the Skelly Tank Wagon. Ray later joined the United States Army and served his country in Okinawa during World War II; he then returned to Schleswig and in 1947 started Modern Appliance with his father-in-law Julius Else and later added hardware items.

In 1978 Ray and Garnet retired but he enjoyed his hobby of making and refurbishing duck decoys; spending wonderful days fishing and working around their cabin at Lake View. Ray also loved collecting antiques and was an active member of the Crawford County Historical Society; the Schleswig Business Men's Club, the Collectors Club, the V.F.W. and the American Legion in Schleswig and a longtime member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. He was a very loving and caring man who loved to celebrate Christmas with his family.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Irene in infancy, his beloved wife Garnet who died August 25, 1992. Survivors include two sisters: Edna Mae and Viola Schmidt of Denison; one brother, Vernie Schmidt and his wife Helen of Cody, Wyoming; many nieces, nephews other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held 2 P.M., Monday, September 14, 1998 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa with Rev. Merle Mahnken officiating the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Marlene Hight served as organist with the congregation singing: "How Great Thou Art," "Just as I Am, without One Plea" and "Onward, Christian Soldiers." Honorary pallbearers were: Leonard Hollander, Michael J. Goodin, Allen Stoneking, Donald Meyer, Robert Skarin, Arlen Meseck and Chris Sands with the American Legion and V.F.W. Post 3930 of Schleswig, serving as pallbearers and providing military honors for the services. Following grave side rites, a luncheon was served at the church by the Immanuel Ladies Aid for those attending the services. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of the arrangements.

Vernette Agusta Katherine (Miller) Schultz (1916 - 1998)

Vernette Agusta Katherine Schultz was born December 27, 1916, the daughter of Henry and Bertha Dethmann Miller. She died at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Monday, October 26, 1998 at the age of eighty-one.

Vernette grew up on the family farm in Otter Creek Township, southeast of Schleswig, receiving her education in the Otter Creek School near her home. She received her salvation through Holy Baptism, June 20, 1917 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and was confirmed in Christ, March 29, 1931 at the Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Church in Schleswig by the Rev. Kielhony. After completing her education, she remained at home helping her parents.

On March 25, 1934, Vernette was united in marriage to Harold Schultz at the Immanuel Lutheran parsonage in Schleswig. The couple settled on the Schultz family farm where they were blessed with the birth of two children. In the mid-fifties, the family moved to their home in Schleswig.

Vernette was sincere to her faith in Christ as evidenced by the love and care she provided her husband and children. Additionally, she volunteered her efforts with community associations including: charter memberships in the Crawford County Memorial Hospital and Eventide Auxiliary's; School Mothers; Women Farm Bureau Auxiliary and was a Red Cross Volunteer. As a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, she taught Sunday school for twenty-one years, and a lifelong Ladies Aid member.

In her leisure time, Vernette enjoyed painting designs with stencils; she was fond of her flower and vegetable gardens, caring for them with diligence. Additionally, Vernette enjoyed socializing with her family and friends at bowling competitions and was a member of the Schleswig Bowling League.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Harold in 1984. Survivors include her Carol Neddermeyer and her husband, Ervin and son, Curtis and his wife, Janice all of Schleswig; and six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, October 29, 1998 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig. Rev. Merle Mahnken officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery, Schleswig. Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "How Great Thou Art," "My Hope is Built on Nothing Less" and "Beautiful Savior." Those serving as pallbearers were Marc Neddermeyer, Todd Neddermeyer, Dakin Schultz, Wade Schultz, Dawn Clinton, Jeff Clinton and Greg Schultz. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of arrangements.

Wernes P. Dethman (1917 - 1997)

Wernes P. Dethman was born on a farm in Goodrich Township, Crawford County, Iowa, June 29, 1917, the son of Herman and Lucie Petersen Dethman. He was received into God's Kingdom of Grace through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism August 19, 1917 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa and confirmed in his Christian Faith there March 20, 1932. He was raised on farms in Crawford County receiving his education in the rural schools and Denison High School. Following his schooling he was employed in Denison for L.T. Petersen, Fairmont Creamery and the State Highway Commission.

On November 10, 1940, Wernes was united in marriage with Ann Kruthoff in Denison. They made their home in Denison where their union was blessed with three children, Wernes, Diane and Paul. During World War II, from April 1, 1942 until his discharge October 22, 1945, Wernes served his country in the United States Army. He served at Normandy and Rhineland and was awarded two bronze stars and the Purple Heart.

Upon his discharge he returned to Denison where he was employed as a rural mail carrier from 1949 until his retirement in 1978. He spent his retirement years in Denison where he was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church, Zion Voters Assembly, Lutheran Layman's League, American Legion Post 8, Denison, Iowa, American Association of Retired Person, Disabled American Veterans, Rural Letter Carrier Association having served as a past president and a member and past president of the Golden K Club.

On October 2, 1996, Wernes moved to Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison where he had since resided. Wernes died Wednesday afternoon, March 5, 1997 at Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 79 years, 8 months and 6 days.

He was preceded in death by his father, Herman Dethmann, his mother, Lucie Dethmann Klink and his step-father, August Klink.

Those who remain to cherish his memory include his wife of over 56 years, Ann Dethmann of Denison, Iowa, three children, Wernes W. Dethmann and his wife, Ruby of San Antonio, Texas, Diane DeKok of Sioux City, Iowa, and Paul Dethmann of Idaho Springs, Colorado, three grandchildren, Amie DeKok of Sioux City, Iowa, Erich Dethmann of San Antonio, Texas and Kevin Paige of Tallahassee, Florida, two brothers and their wives, Roy C. and Marjorie Dethmann and Leonard and Emma Lee Klink all of Denison, Iowa, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 P.M., Saturday, March 8, 1997 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa with the Rev. Kurt R. Kaiser and the Rev. Daniel G. Gifford officiating. Music for the service included the congregation singing "How Great Thou Art," "Beautiful Savior" and "I Know That My Redeemer Lives" with Glenn Rankin serving as organist. Casket bearers included Kenneth Lueck, Bernhard Petersen, Rick Klink, Alan Klink, Erich Dethmann, Amie DeKok, Kevin Paige and Dale Kruthoff. Interment was in the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison, Iowa. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Louis Henry John Gehring (1919 - 2006)

Louis Henry John Gehring was born February 6, 1919, the son of Wilhelm and Hertha Schade Gehring. He died at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center in Cherokee, Iowa, Friday, April 7, 2006 at the age of eighty-seven.

Louis was born on a farm in Goodrich Township near Denison, Iowa. He was baptized in Christ on April 25, 1919 and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith September 1, 1936 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. He received his education in a rural school near his home. After completing his education, he began farming, working for neighbors and relatives. He also worked for Gosch Blacksmith Shop in Schleswig.

On October 10, 1941, Louis was united in marriage to Darlyne Farley in Maryville, Missouri. The couple made their home on the farm and were blessed with the birth of four children. The couple later moved to Vail, Iowa where he began driving trucks for Hoffman Trucking. Louis and Darlyne moved back to the farm several years later, before moving to Denison.

He was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who enjoyed dancing and playing cards with his family. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren in various sporting events such as soccer and softball. He was an expert checkers player, having never been defeated and was always willing to play a game when the occasion arose.

Louise was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Sandy; two grandchildren, Kraig Steinkuehler and Ally Chisholm; three sisters: Adele DeConnick, Arlene Sovinski and Lucille Gehring and two brothers, William Gehring and Victor Gehring. Survivors include: his wife, Darlyne of Denison; two daughters, Deb Steinkuehler and her husband Don of Denison and Denise Chisholm and her husband Stanley of Ida Grove, Iowa; one son Terry and his wife, Carol of Orion, Illinois; six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Leone Gehring of Denison.

Funeral Services were held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, April 11, 2006 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa. Vicar Douglas Bergelin and Rev. Kurt Kaiser officiated the services. Organist Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for the congregational hymns "Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound" and "Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me." Grandchildren serving as pallbearers were: Kevin Steinkuehler, Michael Gehring, Rhonda Webber, Jamie Chisholm, Katie Chisholm, and Amanda Drey. Great-grandchildren serving as honorary pallbearers were: Lindsey Chisholm, Dominic Drey, Hailey Chisholm and Logan Drey. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them in fellowship and lunch at Cronk's Restaurant in Denison. Inurnment was held Wednesday at Oakland Cemetery in Denison. The Huebner Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Marie Alma (Kuhlmann) Magill (1917 - 1994)

Marie Alma Magill was born on September 28, 1917, the daughter of William and Theresa Ossenkop Kuhlmann. She died on Tuesday, October 4, 1994 at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison at the age of seventy-seven years.

Marie was born on a family farm near Charter Oak. She was baptized a Christian and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith in 1931 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. She received her formal education in ST. John's Lutheran School, graduated from the Charter Oak High School with the class of 1935, entered Denison Normal College and after receiving her training she taught grade school near her home.

On May 20, 1939, Marie was united in marriage to Melvin Magill at Jackson, Minnesota. The couple settled on a farm north of Charter Oak and were blessed with the birth of three children. The couple lived on the farm for fifty years.

Marie was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, where she dedicated her life to her Lord and Savior by becoming deeply involved with Christian Education, at St. John's for forty years. She was a member of the 500 Club, Silver Spur Riders Association, Farm Bureau, 4-H activities, St. John's Centennial Steering Committee and volunterred her free time to the Annual Cancer Society fund drives. She enjoyed family activities and baking, earning a Betty Crocker award.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband in 1992. Survivors include: one son, William and his wife, Lucia Lincoln of Charter Oak; two daughters, Bonnie Fisher and her husband C.F. of Bettendorf, and Melva Jane Kinney and her husband, Richard of Fort Collins, Colorado; seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Also two sisters, Esther Kruse of Denison and Florence Hildebrandt of Eventide; one brother, Raymond Kuhlmann of Charter Oak; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, October 7, 1994 at the St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, with Rev. L.C. Gebhardt and Vicar Glenn Niemann officiating the service and grave side rites held at the St. John's Cemetery in Charter Oak. Art Beeck provided the organ accompaniment and sang "The Lord's Prayer." Congregational hymns were: "Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me" and "Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound." Honorary pallbearers were; Mr. and Mrs. Emil Bielfeldt, Mr. and Mrs. Walt Schmeider, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Borgstahl, Mr. and Mrs. Harwin Jess, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Kuhlmann Jr., Mr. Elmer Kutschinski, Mrs. Beverly Weiss, Mr. Leslie Baak and Mr. Lee Magill. Pallbearers were; Ronald Paulsen, Alan Kuhlmann, Valgene Kruse, Wayne Elwell, Wayne Henry and Floyd Boger. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them for lunch at the church served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak was in charge of arrangements.

Raymond J. Kollbaum (1913 - 1983)

Raymond J. Kollbaum was born on December 31, 1913 at Climbing Hill, Iowa, the son of Fred and Rose Trinckelbach Kollbaum. He died on Wednesday afternoon at the Crawford Memorial Hospital in Denison at the age of 69.

Ray moved to a farm northwest of Schleswig. He received his formal education in the rural schools near his home. After the completion of his education he was employed in the farm community and later in the Blacksmith Shop in Schleswig.

On January 10, 1937 Ray was united in marriage to Mabel Nihsen at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. In 1938 they moved to Kiron where Ray established a Blacksmith Shop. Ray became the Case Implement Dealer in Kiron in 1957. Due to health, he turned over to his son and continued to farm near Kiron. For the past number of years, Ray has continued to make his home in Kiron where he was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church.

In addition to his parents, Ray was preceded in death by one son Wayne, two brothers and seven sisters.

Survivors include his wife Mabel of Kiron, one son Doug of Kiron, one daughter Nola Rae Knapp of Sioux City and eleven grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, Fred Kollbaum of Kiron and John Kollbaum of Schleswig and seven sisters, Marie Prussing of Denison, Hilda Paulsen of Sioux City, Mabel Christian of Denison, Esther, Mrs. Ben Lackman of Denison, Margaret, Mrs. Clifford Wissink of Storm Lake, Berdina Nemitz of Denison and Rose, Mrs. Melvin Nielsen of Ida Grove as well as a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 13, 1983, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. Rev. David Nelson and rev. Fred Moore officiated at the service. Hymns included, Take My Hand Precious Lord and Goin' Home. Serving as pallbearers were Jack Neumann, Elroy Koch, LaVern Boyens, Clarence Bartlett, John Schultz and Rollin Auen. Honorary Pallbearers were LoWayne Nihsen, Lonnie Nihsen, Vernus Hihsen, Delmar Johnson, Richard Kollbaum, Norman Boger, Vilbert Prussing, Bernard Lackman, Mark Kollbaum, Ronnie Johnson, Larry Johnson, Jim Kollbaum, Ed Boger, Ken Boger, Mark Nielsen, Dennis Killbau, Jerry Wissink, Robert Wissenk, Charles Lackman, Leroy Paulsen, Kenney Paulsen and Duane Paulsen. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison, Iowa.

Viola Doria (Bargenquast) Snyder (1914 - 1996)

Viola, daughter of Fred and Margaret Wendt Bargenquast, was born February 7, 1914, south of Manilla, Iowa. She grew up in the Manilla area. After finishing her schooling, she went to work to help support her family because her father had died.

On November 19, 1930, Viola was united in marriage with Edward Lorenzen. One daughter, Betty, was born to this union. They farmed near Botna and then moved to Arizona. Edward died in 1937 following lung surgery, Viola moved to Manilla.

On July 30, 1942, Viola was united in marriage with Frances Dale Snyder at Papillion, Nebraska. Four children, Karen, Gloria, Francis, and Gail were born to this union. They farmed in the area until 1965 when they moved into Manilla. In 1967 they began working as caretakers at the Shelby County Farm. When her husband, Dale, retired in 1975, they returned to Manilla. Dale died on September 16, 1995.

Viola was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church and Priscilla Guild, as well as the American Legion Auxiliary. She was an avid letter writer and enjoyed baking, quilting and gardening. Playing pinochle was also one of her pastimes.

In the summer of 1996, Viola's health began to fail and she died at the Manning General Hospital, Manning, Iowa, on Thursday, November 7, 1996, at the age of 82 years and 9 months.

Besides her husbands, Viola was preceded in death by 3 brothers: one in infancy, Otto Bargenquast, and Elmer Bargenquast.

Viola is survived by her children Betty and her husband Juan Polledo of Kalispell, MT; Karen Foster, of Blair, NE; Gloria and her husband, Frank Boeck of Manilla, IA; Francis Snyder of Manilla, IA; Gail Snyder and his wife Tami, of Waterloo, IA; 12 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; 4 brothers: Frank Bargenquast of Manilla; Fred Bargenquast of Council Bluffs, IA; Roy Bargenquast and his wife, Barbara of Council Bluffs, IA; and Leo Bargenquast and his wife, LaVonne, of Avoca, IA; 3 sisters: her twin, Leona Schlichting of Grandview, WA; Ruby and her husband, John Weber, of Yakima, WA; and Margaret VanHorne of Nashville, TN; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Services were held Sunday, November 10, 1996 at 2:00 p.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla, Iowa. Pastor Timothy Geitz officiated the service. Music was provided by the congregation singing "Beyond the Sunset," "Amazing Grace," and "Rock of Ages" played by Ruth Joens who served as organist. Interment was in the Nishnabotna Cemetery in Manilla, Iowa. Casketbearers were Dara Jorgensen, Shane Boeck, Steve Jorgensen, Glenn Foster, Jennifer Foster, and Kant Foster. Honorary casketbearers were Brittany Snyder, Hilary Snyder, Sharon Manning, Pam Jones, John Huckins, Jr., Terri Davis, and Casey Huckins. The family wishes to express their gratitude for your kindness evidenced in thought, word, and deed.

Martin Carl Schnoor (1919 - 2001)

Martin Carl "Snorky" Schnoor was born December 28, 1919, the son of Ferdinand and Ida Bramstedt Schnoor. He died June 4, 2001 at the Denison Care Center at the age of 81 years.

Martin was born on the family farm in Willow Township near Ute where he grew up. As an infant, he was baptized a Christian at St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. He began his education in a rural school near his home until the eighth grade. After his education, Martin worked for Hedwig's father on the Schmieder family farm. Martin was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak in 1934.

On January 20, 1946 Martin and Hedwig Schmieder were united in marriage at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ute, and were blessed with the birth of five children. After marriage Martin began farming in Crawford County until his retirement in 1981. He worked part time helping Bill Magill farm until 1991 when he moved to Ricketts, Iowa. Martin enjoyed being around his family. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak.

Surviving are his wife, Hedwig of Ricketts; his son, Douglas and his wife, Mariann of Dow City; two daughters, Theresa and her husband, John Howrey of Minot, North Dakota; Debra Preftakes of Ankeny, Iowa. Also surviving are six grandchildren: Tammy and her husband, Brian Zehner of Dow City; Tracey and Troy Schnoor of Dow City; J. Lance Howrey of Superior, Colorado; Jason Howrey of Fargo, North Dakota; and Adam Schnoor of Ankeny, Iowa and 3 great-grandchildren, Shannon, Jennifer and Benjamin Zehner of Dow City. Also one sister, Elsie Schnoor of Charter Oak and one brother, Fred Schnoor and his wife, Fern of Mapleton; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m., Thursday, June 7, 2001, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. Eugene Ernst officiated the services and grave side rites held at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery in Charter Oak. Marjorie Neddermeyer provided the organ accompaniment for vocalists Jim and Nancy Jurgens as they sang "How Great Thou Art," and "Amazing Grace," and for the congregational hymn "Just as I Am, Without one Plea." Those serving as honorary pallbearers were: J. Lance Howrey, Jennifer Zehner, Tammy Zehner, Jason Howrey, Benjamin Zehner, Shannon Zehner, Tracey Schnoor, Troy Schnoor, and Adam Schnoor. Willis Alfred Carstenson (1927 - 1998)

Willis Alfred Carstenson was born April 6, 1927, the son of Peter Carstenson and Edna Asmus Carstenson Ransom Wolfe. He died September 10, 1998 at St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 71.

Willis was born on a farm in Crawford County near Denison and received his education in Crawford County Rural Schools. He was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. After completing his education, Willis began working as a farmhand for different farmers in the county. Additionally, he was employed at the Denison Bottling Company, Armour's Egg Plant and worked in construction for the Larby Construction Company. Willis also farmed with George Dieber from 1951 to 1969. On August 30, 1977, he started working for the Denison Street Department and remained there until retiring on April 1, 1992.

On November 4, 1954, Willis was united in marriage to Georgia Dieber at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Georgia died September 8, 1969. On October 22, 1987, Willis was united in marriage to Joleen Petersen at the Denison Care Center. In his leisure time, Willis enjoyed listening to Country Western music and watching TV. Additionally, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards and was fond of dog racing.

He is preceded in death by his father, Peter Carstenson; mother, Edna Wolfe; one brother, Ronald Carstenson; his step-father, Clarence Ransom Sr.; and half-brothers, Earl, Jim, Clarence Jr. and William Ransom, Dale, Darrell and Jim Ransom; half-sister Darlene Meeves.

Survivors include: his wife, Joleen; one sister, Donna Kroll of Denison; half-sisters: Julie Jepsen and her husband, Dennis, Diana Schloesser and her husband, Melvin, Marvel Bruning and her husband, Ron all of Denison; Carol Goeppner, Norma Bean and her husband, Paul all of Fort Dodge, Iowa; Janis Woods and her husband, Glen of Rose Hill, Iowa; and Vera Jentzen and husband, William of Westside, Iowa; one half-sister-in-law, Carol Ransom of Defiance; and half-brothers: Kenneth Ransom and his wife, Beulah of Denison; Larry Ransom of Manning; Tom Ransom and his wife, Diana of Deloit; and Bob Ransom of Ft. Dodge; several step sisters and brothers. Also many nieces, nephews, a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m., Monday, September 14,·1998 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa with Rev. Gordon Hoyt officiating the service and grave side rites at the Oakland Cemetery in Denison. Dorothy Jessen provided the organ accompaniment for soloist Rubie Kastner solo selections: "Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me" and "In the Garden." Those serving as pallbearers were: Charles Slater, Leonard Reis, Jack Mathies Dave Nemitz, Verdell Brus and Bob Zeimen. Inez I. (Molony) Richey (1920 - 1994)

Inez I. Richey was born Oct. 9, 1920, the daughter of Michael and Selma Otto Molony. She died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison on Monday, July 18, 1994 at the age of 73 years. Inez grew up on a farm south of Denison and received her early education in a rural school near her home and at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic School. She continued her education at the Denison Community High School where she graduated with the Class of 1938. After graduation, Inez moved to Chicago where she was employed as a waitress and check girl in a steakhouse before moving to California where she was employed in the same position there for six months.

She returned to Chicago where she worked as a waitress until she was united in marriage to Jack Richey on Jan. 2, 1942. The couple settled in Chicago and were blessed with the birth of one son. In March of 1942, she returned to Denison and lived with her parents when her husband joined the U.S. Armed Service. In 1943, she was reunited with her husband at Ft. Knox, Kentucky and subsequently returned with her son to Denison when Jack was based overseas. Upon returning from his war duties, she joined her husband in Tuscola, Ill. where they remained until 1948 when they returned to Denison.

The couple owned and operated the G & I Tap in Denison for 27 years. She enjoyed reading, traveling and purchasing antiques and always looked forward to socializing with family and friends at bingo games. She was a member of St. Rose Lima Catholic Church in Denison, their Ladies Guild and the V.F.W. Auxiliary.

Inez was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Joe; one sister, Ruth and her husband, Jack in 1988. Survivors include her son, Jay and his wife, Diana of Boulder City, Nev.; one step-granddaughter, Leslie Adams of Minden, Nevada; and four sisters, Nellie Pieper, Eileen Johnson and Grace Hass and her husband, Warren all of Denison and Kathleen Petersen and her husband, Cyrenus of Schleswig.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 23, 1994 at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison. Father Andrew Hoffmann served as Celebrant with interment at (sentence not completed). Jean Cornelius provided the organ accompaniment for St. Rose of Lima Choir and soloist Lydia Johnson singing, "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling." Pallbearers were Craig Petersen, Mike Johnson, Steve Johnson, Dave Peters, Rick Jones and Randy Hass. A Legion of Mary Rosary was held at 4 p.m. and a Parish Prayer Service at 8 p.m., Friday, July 22 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them for lunch at the parish center, served by the St. Rose of Lima Ladies Guild. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Lois Ann (Thomsen) Spiegel (1926 - 1997)

Lois Ann Spiegel was born September 7, 1926, the daughter of Rudolph and Elsie Nelson Thomsen. She died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa on Saturday January 25, 1997 at the age of seventy.

Lois was born at Ute, Iowa and was baptized in Christ on September 22, 1929, at the United Methodist Church in Charter Oak and confirmed in the Lutheran faith on June 7, 1946, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hanover Township. She grew up around Charter Oak and graduated from the Charter Oak High School with the class of 1944.

On September 16, 1945, Lois was united in marriage to Martin Spiegel at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hanover Township. Together they farmed for fifty-one years and were blessed with the birth of three children. In September 1995, the couple were honored to celebrate their fiftieth wedding anniversary with an open house.

Lois devoted her life to caring for her family and grandchildren. She enjoyed teaching Sunday School and confirmation classes for many years, and also taught in rural schools for a period of time. She truly enjoyed being outdoors, especially helping Martin on the farm. She raised a very large garden, loved cooking, canning and grew many beautiful flowers and house plants. Lois and Martin also enjoyed going on bus tours together. Lois had a beautiful soprano voice, and enjoyed singing in the church choir. A memory she treasured was the honor of singing in the Christmas Eve Service at St. Paul with her three oldest grandsons.

She was preceded in death by her parents. Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Martin, two sons, Richard and his wife, Debbie; Mark and his wife, Linda all of Charter Oak; one daughter, Lori Mozer and her husband, Dennis of Early; eight grandchildren, Ryan and Christopher Spiegel, Seth; Nathan and Melissa Spiegel; Nicole, Jarod and Joshua Mozer; one aunt, Mabel Nelson of Charter Oak; and many other relatives, friends and neighbors.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 25, 1997 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. Eugene Ernst officiated the service and grave side rites held at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hanover Township. Lorraine (Klinker) Gierstorf (1923 - 1992)

Lorraine Gierstorf was born on January 25, 1923, the daughter of William and Olga Schroeder Klinker. She died on Tuesday, April 28, 1992 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison at the age of 69 years.

Lorraine was born on a farm in Hanover Township. She was baptized on February 18, 1923 and confirmed on April 5, 1936 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hanover Township. She received her formal education in rural schools, graduated from the Charter Oak High School with the class of 1940, entered Normal College and after her training she taught in a rural school.

On September 23, 1945, Lorraine was united in marriage to Elmer Gierstorf at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. The couple settled on a farm near Schleswig for eight years and then moved to William Klinker farm near Charter Oak, until the couple moved to Charter Oak in 1982.

Throughout her life, she was devoted to her husband, and family. After her children had grown, she continued her affection of her grandchildren and occupied her spare time caring for her flowers, gardening and cooking. She dedicated her life to her Lord and Savior and was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak, their Ladies Aid, Aid Association for Lutheran, Eventide Auxiliary, and the Charter Oak Clubetts.

She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, Elmer of Charter Oak; one son, Ladean and his wife, Jane of Norwalk, Iowa; two daughters, Faylene Kluever and her husband, Jerry of Ankeny, Iowa and Linda Healy and her husband, Tom of Moorehead, Minnesota; and ten grandchildren, Todd and Shelly Kluver, Chad, Erick and Cory Kluver, Emily, David and Shelby Gierstorf, and Dawn, Staci and Sara Healy. She is also survived by one brother, Donald Klinker and his wife, Pat of Leon, Iowa and one sister, Evelyn Bohlmann and her husband, Art of Charter Oak. Also many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 1, 1992 at the St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak with Pastor L.C. Gebhardt and Vicar Patrick Sparling officiating the service and grave side rites held at the St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery Hanover Township in Charter Oak, Iowa. Angela Gebhardt provided the organ accompaniment for the St. John's Ladies Choir singing "How Great Thou Art" and "Asleep in Jesus! Blessed Sleep" and congregational hymn "What a Friend We Have in Jesus". Pallbearers were: David Gierstorf, Dennis Klinker, Chad Kluver, Cory Kluver, Erick Kluver and Todd Kluver. Louis William Petersen (1928 - 2006)

Louis William Petersen was born June 27, 1928, the son of Christian and Minnie Boger Petersen. He died Sunday, August 13, 2006 at the Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa at the age of seventy-eight.

Louis was born on a farm near Denison, Iowa and received his education in a rural school near his home. After completing his education he began farming, until entering the United States Army on January 21, 1953. On December 16, 1954, he received his honorable discharge and returned to Crawford County to continue his farming career.

On October 3, 1954, Louis was united in marriage to Lorna Deiber at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. The couple made their home on the family farm and were blessed with the birth of two children. Louis retired from farming in 1974 and worked at Schneider's Sales and Service. He worked at Nelson's Park from 1985 until 1996.

Louis was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, the Voters' Assembly and their Men's Club. He was also a member of the Denison American Legion. Louis was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who loved playing with his great-grandchildren. He liked working with small engines and was great with numbers, could figure anything in his head and enjoyed doing number puzzles. In his leisure time, Louis enjoyed fishing, going to the casino, socializing with family and friends and attending auctions.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, William Petersen in infancy, Elmer Petersen and his wife, Lorna and August Petersen and his wife, Helen; one sister, Ida Vogt and her husband, Frank and his brother-in-law, Henry Eggert.

Survivors include his wife, Lorna of Denison; one son, Jeffrey Petersen of Fremont, Nebraska; one daughter, Vicki Koeppe and her husband, Frank of Ricketts; eight grandchildren, Jeremy, Jacqueline, Jed, Josh, Jordan and Kristen, Nicholas and Jeri, William, Amanda and Derek Meyer and three great-grandchildren, Emma Koeppe, Jayden Meyer and Owen Petersen; and one sister-in-law, Shirley Caldwell and her husband, Bob of Buck Grove; other relatives and friends.

Memorial services were held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, August 17, 2006 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser officiated the service with inurnment at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns, "How Great Thou Art" and "Just as I Am, Without One Plea." Soloist, Eldon Hardekopf sang, "Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound" and "On the Wings of a Snow White Dove." Honorary pallbearers were: Jacqueline Petersen, Jeremy Petersen, Joshua Petersen, William Koeppe, Jedidiah Petersen, Nicholas Koeppe, Jordan Petersen and Amanda Meyer. Vincent William Schneider (1925 - 2000)

Vincent William Schneider was born March 25, 1925, the son of Henry and Alma Kahler Schneider. He died at the St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska on Friday, March 17, 2000 at the age of seventy-four.

Vincent was born in East Boyer Township, Denison, Iowa and was baptized in Christ on June 19, 1925 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and later confirmed there on March 17, 1940. He received his education at the East Boyer Number 6 School, near his home. After completing his education, Vincent helped on the family farm, until entering the United States Army in 1951. He served in the Korean War and received his honorable discharge in 1953.

On March 21, 1954, Vincent was united in marriage to Frieda Louise Lorenzen at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison by Rev. Schmidt. The couple settled on a farm near Denison and were blessed with the birth of four sons. Vincent farmed until retiring and then worked with his son, Terry at Schneider Sales and Service. Vincent was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Denison and a former member of the American Legion and Trustee for Trinity Lutheran Church, Manilla. In his earlier years, he was active in 4-H and later as a leader of the East Boyer Rustlers. He enjoyed metal detecting, playing bingo and having coffee with his friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers-in-law, Walt Bandow and Leonard Fritz. Survivors include his wife, Frieda of Denison; four sons, Eugene and his wife, Teresa of Gowrie; Terry and his fiancée, Pauline Bobert of Denison; Dale and his wife, Kathy of Denison; Merle and his wife, Susan of Des Moines; six grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy Fritz of Denison; one brother-in-law, John Lorenzen and his wife, Ruby of Denison; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m., Monday, March 20, 2000 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Rev. Kurt Kaiser officiated the services and grave side rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment and Ann Lorenzen provided the piano accompaniment for soloist Kim Lorenzen as he sang "On Eagle's Wings" and "I Was There To Hear Your Borning Cry" and for congregational hymn "I Know that My Redeemer Lives". Vernon F. Hollrah (1925 - 2004)

Vernon F. Hollrah was born June 12, 1920, to Carl and Anna Clausen Hollrah on a farm in Hanover Township, Crawford County, Iowa near Charter Oak. He entered into his eternal home Monday, April 5, 2004 at the Denison Care Center in Denison, Iowa at the age of eighty-three.

Vernon was baptized July 11, 1920 in St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hanover Township, Charter Oak, Iowa. He received his education in grade schools in Paradise and Hanover Townships and one year at St. John's Lutheran School in Charter Oak. Vernon was confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church, Charter Oak on March 25, 1934. He attended Charter Oak High School for one and one-half years. After that he assisted his parents on the family farm.

At age fifty, Vernon was able to attend G.E.D. classes and was awarded a State High School Equivalency Certificate. Vernon enlisted in the army in January 1942. After thirteen weeks of basic training he was assigned to Company 7, 126th Infantry Regiment, 32nd Infantry Division. During World War II he served three years and four months overseas from April 1942 to September 1945 in New Guinea and the Philippines. He was wounded in April 1945 on Luzon Island in the Philippines. After the war ended in September 1945, Vernon received an Honorable Discharge and was awarded the Purple Heart, the Silver Star Medal, the Bronze Star Medal, five battle stars and several unit citations.

Vernon entered into the farming business in 1946. On February 22, 1948, Vernon was united in marriage to Leona Baak of Ricketts, Iowa at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Sioux City, Iowa. The couple made their home on the family farm near Charter Oak and were blessed with the birth of three children, Kent, Jane and Dean. Vernon and Leona moved into the town of Charter Oak in 1978. He continued farming until retiring in 1985.

Vernon worked at the West Central Iowa Sheltered Workshop in Denison, Iowa for three and one-half years. Then he accepted a position at the Soil Conservation Service in Crawford County where he worked for ten years and retired in 1998. Vernon was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Charter Oak since childhood. As a voting member of St. John's congregation, he willingly served on various committees and held many offices. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Laymen's League and St. John's Lamplighters. Vernon was a life member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Anna Hollrah and one brother, Leland. He is survived by his wife, Leona; children, Kent and his wife, Georgia Hollrah of Denison; Jane and her husband, Lance Lafleur of Madison, Nebraska; Dean and his wife, Deborah Hollrah of Danbury, Connecticut; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild; two sisters, Evelyn Meyer of Hemet, California; and Aldene Winquist of Denison; one brother, Donald Hollrah of Hudson, Florida; one brother-in-law, Kenneth and his wife, Arlene Baak of Ricketts; many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, April 8, 2004 at the St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. L.C. Gebhardt officiated the service and grave side rites held at the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery. Organist Art Beeck provided the organ music for congregational hymns "Crown Him with Many Crowns", "What a Friend We Have in Jesus", "I Know That My Redeemer Lives" and "Abide With Me". Palmer John Moeller (1927 - 2003)

Palmer John Moeller was born April 22, 1927, the son of Oscar A. and Elsie Baker Moeller. He died Wednesday, January 1, 2003 at the Bryan LGH Medical Center in Lincoln, Nebraska, at the age of seventy-five.

P.J. was born in Schleswig, Iowa and was baptized in Christ on May 29, 1927 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig and later confirmed there on April 6, 1941. He received his education at the Schleswig Community School. After completing his education he drove a batch truck during the construction of Highway 59 and worked for other local trucking companies. P.J. entered the United States Army on July 10, 1951, and served his country with the 109th Second Combat Engineering Battalion. He received his honorable discharge in April 1953 with a Korean Service Medal, a Bronze Service Star and a United Nations Service Medal. After P.J.'s discharge, he returned to the Schleswig area, where he continued trucking.

On February 21, 1958, P.J. was united in marriage to Barbara Jepsen at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. The couple made their home in Schleswig and were blessed with the birth of three children. They operated Agneta and PJ's Bar from 1961 until 1973. P.J also drove school bus during this time. In 1974, P.J. and Barb, along with their children owned and operated Moeller Trucking Company until retiring in 1989; but continued to be active in the business until the time of his death.

P.J. was a devoted and life-time member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. He was also a life-time member of the Schleswig V.F.W. Post No. 3930 and a volunteer fireman for fifteen years. He was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather who loved his family and enjoyed attending his children and grandchildren activities. He never spoke any unkind words of anyone. In his leisure time, P.J. enjoyed socializing and dancing.

P.J. was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Orrin Moeller. Survivors include his wife, Barbara of Schleswig; two sons, Ross Moeller and his wife, Tami; Scott Moeller and his fiancée, Kristi Hargens; one daughter, Terri Webb and her husband, Jack, all of Denison; twelve grandchildren; and other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, January 4, 2003 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Merle Mahnken officiated the services and grave side rites held at Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for soloist Barb Buffum as she sang "Shall We Gather at the River", "On Eagle's Wings", and for the congregational hymns "How Great Thou Art" and "Onward, Christian Soldiers". Phyllis M. (Ernst) Gosch (1924 - 2006)

Phyllis M. Gosch was born April 11, 1924, the daughter of Theodore and Hilda Jurgensen Ernst. She died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Sunday, October 8, 2006, at the age of eighty-two. Phyllis was born on the family farm near Schleswig, Iowa where she grew up, receiving her education in a rural school near her home. She was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in the Grant Township south of Ida Grove, Iowa.

On February 13, 1944, Phyllis was united in marriage to John H. Gosch at Trinity Lutheran Church. The couple settled on a farm southeast of Schleswig and were blessed with the birth of four children. The couple remained on the farm until John's death in 1988 and Phyllis moved to Schleswig.

Phyllis was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who had an inspiring faith in her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She especially enjoyed her children and grandchildren and occupied her leisure time socializing with family and friends at a game of cards, sewing and mending; making homemade sauerkraut; baking buns, cinnamon rolls and mashed potatoes to be remembered. Her extended family included her neighbors for whom she had a deep and lasting affection. Other social activities included senior citizen and fellowship clubs. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig; Ladies Aid, serving three times as secretary; LWML, serving as secretary in 1990 and 1991; and various quilting groups.

She was preceded in death by one son, Howard in 1952; her husband, John in 1988; two grandchildren, Timothy Gosch in 1982 and Jacob Gosch in 1988. Her parents in 1983; a sister, Carol Schmadeke; and a brother, Vernon Ernst.

Survivors include: one son, Marc Gosch and his wife, Sharon of Denison; two daughters, Cindy Gosch and Janet Roecker and her husband, Brad all of Indianola; seven grandchildren: David, Matt, Chris, Nathan and Jamie Gosch;·Haley and Mitchell Roecker; one brother, Merle Ernst and his wife, Lois of Schleswig; one sister, Audrey Munson and her husband, Jim of Bauzite, Arkansas. One brother-in-law, Louis Schmadeke and his wife, Dorothy of Arthur; and sister-in-law, Darlene Ernst of Schleswig. Other special friends include Davahn Lovan (David) and her children, Mercedes and Alex of Denison; Donna Burns of Indianola; other nieces, nephews, relatives and neighbors.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 10, 2006 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Merle Mahnken officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Grant Township, Ida Grove, Iowa. Organist Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns, "What a Friend We Have in Jesus", "Just as I Am, Without One Plea" and "I Know that My Redeemer Lives". Honorary pallbearers were: Deloris Riessen, Leola Schultz, Melvin Flynn, Bill Benson, Carmen Schmidt, Darlene Ernst, Shae Hansen, Lance Moore and the Zamago Family. Pallbearers were: Tim Schmadeke, Nathan Gosch, Marc Gosch, David Gosch, Matt Gosch, Chris Gosch and Jamie Gosch. Willard Nicholas Friedrichsen (1923 - 2005)

Willard Nicholas Friedrichsen was born June 19, 1923, the son of Bernhardt and Rosa Boysen Friedrichsen. He died Saturday, February 19, 2005 at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa at the age of eighty-one.

Willard was born on a farm northeast of Kiron, Iowa. He was baptized in Christ, September 25, 1923 and later confirmed December 25, 1952. After completing his education, he farmed for Byron Moeller until entering the United States Army on April 18, 1945. Serving with the Battery F 152 Company (Airborne) as a mess sergeant and was qualified as a parachutist and rifleman. He served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. Willard was decorated with the Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal, Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Army of Occupation Japan Medal. After receiving his honorable discharge December 31, 1946, he returned to Denison and managed the Main Inn Bar and Restaurant.

On September 20, 1954, Willard was united in marriage to Ruby Segebart at the St. John Lutheran Church in Deloit by Rev. L.S. Winter. The couple settled in Denison and were blessed with the birth of three children. Willard worked at Farmland Foods in Denison from 1958 to 1986. He also did some fencing and worked at the Jeff Hinze Tree Service.

Willard was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. He was a loving husband, caring father, grandfather and great-grandfather who enjoyed reminiscing about days gone by with his family. He loved family picnics with his family, special times with his grandchildren and taking them to softball, baseball, basketball, football, soccer and volleyball games. He enjoyed gardening, woodworking and in his leisure time he enjoyed fishing with his brothers. Willard and Ruby were honored to celebrate their fiftieth wedding anniversary with all of their family present.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Arlo and Burdell Friedrichsen and one sister-in-law, LaVeda Segebart. Survivors include his wife, Ruby of Denison; two daughters, Carolyn Boeck and her husband, Dwight; Diana Wiges and her husband, Doug, all of Denison; one son, Raymond Friedrichsen of Redondo Beach, California; eight grandchildren, Sarah and Glenn Carlson, Jason, Christopher and Rachel Boeck, Jeffrey and Amanda Bevar, Jennifer Bevar, Hannah Wiges and Stephanie Friedrichsen, and four great-grandchildren; one brother, Gene Friedrichsen of Onawa; sister and brothers-in-law, Dorothy Friedrichsen of Denison; June Albrecht and her husband, Raymond of Lompec, California; Evelyn Merritt and her husband, Larry of Rock Rapids; Ernest Segebart of Denison; Larry Segebart and his wife, Kathy of Clinton; Charles Segebart and his wife, Joan of Schleswig; Billy Segebart of Dow City; Carol Meyer and her husband, Steve of Belmond; and Jimmy Allen Segebart of Knoxville, Iowa; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 .a.m., Tuesday, February 22, 2005 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. David Sewing officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and "I Know That My Redeemer Lives." Soloist, Eldon Hardekopf sang "The Old Rugged Cross." Pallbearers were: Raymond Friedrichsen, Burnus Friedrichsen, Byron Friedrichsen, Bruce Friedrichsen, Jason Boeck and Chris Boeck. Military Honors were the Denison American Legion Post 8. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Merrill Elvin Lyman (1913 - 1983)

Merrill Elvin Lyman was born Aug. 17, 1913, near Dunlap, Iowa, the son of Pearl and Olive Leytham Lyman. He died Nov. 28, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, at the age of 70. Merrill spent his formative years on a family farm near Dunlap. He received his formal education in the rural schools near his home. He later helped with the family operation.

On Feb. 15, 1932, Merrill was united in marriage to Thelma Cose at Deloit. Together they farmed in the Schleswig and Kiron areas until moving to Denison in 1965. While in Denison, Merrill was employed with Denison Seed until his retirement in 1977.

In addition to his parents, Merrill was preceded in death by his brother Dale. Survivors include, four sons, Gerald and his wife Norma of Grand Junction, Colo., Sheldon and his wife Marilyn of Danville, Ill., Garlyn and his wife Mary of Denison and Gailen and his wife Barbara of Las Cruces, N. M. and by two daughters, Mavis and her husband Stan Skow of Mapleton and Linda and her husband Robert Quandt of Denison. Also surviving are fourteen grandchildren, one great grandson and two brothers, Dean Lyman of Newell, and Howard Lyman of Roseville, Cal.

Funeral services were held Nov. 30, at 1:30 P.M. at the United Methodist Church in Denison. Burial was in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens. The Rev. Dr. Scott Woodworth officiated at the services. Glenn Rankin served as organist with Henry Henningsen as soloist. Hymns included, How Great Thou Art and Safe In The Arms Of Jesus. Pallbearers were Don Bartlett, Herschel Gabrielson, Victor Struck, Vincent Keating, Milfred Nemits and Robert Arnold. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison.

Rule A. Jenkins (1910 - 1987)

Rule A. Jenkins was born in Shelby County, Iowa, Sept. 18, 1910, the son of William Andrew and Mary Helen Holcomb Jenkins. He was raised on a farm near Dow City, Iowa, and received his education in the rural schools near his home. Following his schooling he was employed as a farmhand for area farmers.

In October of 1938, Rule was married to Dorothy Linden. They were the parents of four children, Rena, Ron, Sharon and Dale. They made their home on farms in the Kiron area.

On November 18, 1966, Rule was united in marriage with JoAnne McFarland at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. They made their home in Denison where Rule was employed at Farmland Foods. In 1968, Rule and JoAnne purchased Fred's Cafe in Denison. Rule retired from Farmland in 1970 due to failing health. Since that time he had assisted JoAnne in the operation of the cafe when his health would permit him to do so.

Rule died early Sunday morning, Sept. 13, 1987, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Ia. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 76 years, 11 months and 25 days. He was a member of the Wesleyan Church in Denison.

Rule was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, LaRette and Eugene Jenkins.

He is survived by his wife JoAnne Jenkins of Denison; four children, Rena and her husband Carroll Skarin of Kiron, Ronald Jenkins and his wife Elaine of Colorado Springs, Colo., Sharon and her husband, Wayne Baker of Kiron and Dale Jenkins of Ida Grove; two stepsons, Kim McFarland and wife Vicki of Sioux City, and Kevin McFarland and his wife, Cheryl of Odebolt; two step-daughters, Margie and her husband, David Mick of Cedar Rapids, and Beth Wright of Jackson, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; four brothers Jesse Jenkins of Denison, Ancil Jenkins and his wife, Edith of Dunlap, Romanan Jenkins and his wife, Evelyn of Kiron and Wilbert Jenkins and his wife, Marcella of Couer D Alene, Idaho; and one sister, Helen Lyman of Newell. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 15, at the Wesleyan Church in Denison with the Reverend Douglas Swarthout officiating. Music for the service was provided by Suzi Swarthout playing and singing "How Great Thou Art" and "He Holds The Keys." The congregation sang "The Old Rugged Cross." Pall bearers included Fred Clements, Jack Greene, Richard Adams, William Borgstahl, Chuck Williams and Bill Siglin. Interment was in the Dow City Cemetery, at Dow City. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Mervin M. Arnold (1918 - 2004)

Mervin M., son of Heinrich Otto and Katharina (Koos) Arnold, was born March 21, 1918 on a farm nine miles south of Denison, Iowa. He was received into God's Kingdom of Grace through the sacrament of Holy Baptism at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison on July 21, 1918 by Reverend Frese. Mervin was confirmed in his Christian Faith on March 29, 1931. He received his early education in country school, attended 7th and 8th grades at Zion's Parochial School and graduated from Denison Community High School in 1936. Following high school, Mervin farmed with his father on the family farm.

On May 28, 1939 he was united in marriage to Lucille Ruth Hansen at the Lutheran Parsonage in Walnut. Their union was blessed with one daughter, Sharlene. The couple continued farming on the family farm until Mervin was elected to the Crawford County Board of Supervisors in 1962. He served on the board through 1974. Due to his failing health the family moved to Denison in 1978 and later moved to Manilla.

Through the years, Mervin enjoyed many leisure activities, including card playing and traveling. He was a member of Zion Men's Club and an active participant in bowling, having bowled in four leagues and attended several state and national bowling tournaments. Mervin also enjoyed fishing and owned a cabin in Minnesota for 22 years. Mervin was a loving husband, father and grandfather. His wife Lucille passed away November 9, 1992. On February 18, 1996, Mervin was united in marriage with Loretta Petersen and they continued living in Manilla.

Mervin died unexpectedly in his home on February 26, 2004, at the age of 85 years, 11 months and 5 days. Preceding Mervin in death are his parents, wife Lucille and grandson-in-law Michael Friedrichsen.

Mervin is survived by his wife Loretta; daughter Sharlene and husband Kenneth Hansen of Denison; three granddaughters: Marsha and husband John Stoll of Mokena, Illinois; Michelle Friedrichsen of Odebolt; and Marie Hansen of Council Bluffs; great-grandson Dylan Friedrichsen; step-children David Petersen of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Barb and husband Greg Swanson of Loveland, Colorado; three step-grandsons: Nathan Swanson of Durango, Colorado; Nicholas Swanson of Loveland, Colorado; and Max Petersen of Salt Lake City, Utah; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held on Monday, March 1, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla, Iowa. Pastor Mark N. Mueller officiated the service and interment, held at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Denison, Iowa. Bonnie Lorenzen provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns, "What A Friend We Have In Jesus", "Behold A Host Arrayed In White", and "How Great Thou Art". Those serving as casketbearers were Phillip Blum, Harold Olson, Jr., Lynn Olson, Nyle Gruhn, Garry Gruhn and Mark Gruhn. Honorary casketbearers were Harold Olson, Sr., Dick Gross, Alvin Bandow, Junior Carstens, Joe Schiltz, Bill Rogge, Arlo Clausen, Dennis Rasmussen and Don Pedersen. The family invited everyone at the service back to the church for lunch and fellowship. The Ohde Funeral Home in Manilla was in charge of the arrangements.

Ruth Lucille (Petersen) McGinn (1914 - 2002)

Ruth Lucille McGinn was born April 20, 1914, the daughter of Fritz and Clara Grill Petersen. She died November 21, 2002 at her home in Denison, Iowa at the age of eighty-eight. Ruth was born on a farm in Otter Creek Township and received her education in a rural school near her home. After school, she went to work for Henry and Lizzie Lafrenz in Denison, and later, worked at the Fair Store.

On September 2, 1946, Ruth was united in marriage to Peter McGinn. The couple settled on a farm near Kenwood, Iowa and were blessed with the birth of six children. The couple farmed until moving to Denison in 1962. Ruth began working at the Beacon Drive-in, a job which she held for many years. She had an inspiring love for her family and friends, and a tremendous sense of humor. She loved sports, especially Iowa football and basketball, the Chicago Bears, and golf. She also enjoyed reading, traveling, making and visiting friends. She was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Peter; one brother, Rowland Petersen; one sister, Mary Miller; two sisters-in-law: LuVerne and Lorraine Petersen; two brothers-in-law: Carl Miller and Eldo Hollander.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary McGinn of Denison; five sons: Philip and Bernard of Grand Lake, Colorado, Stephen of Denison, Charles and his special friend, Sue Hudson of Ft. Worth, Texas, and Neil and his wife, Danita of Denison; three grandchildren: Nathan, Daniel and Miriah; two brothers: Harry Petersen and his wife, Nellie of Denison, and Melvin Petersen and his wife, Marcella of Schleswig; three sisters: Lois Miller of Mapleton; Dorothy Pollock and her husband, Ray of Vail; and Henrietta Hollander of Schleswig; two brothers-in-law: Paul McGinn and his wife, Peggy of Mellville, Delaware, and Harvey Pettit of Fredricksburg, Virginia; four sisters-in-law: Eileen Hanson and her husband, Richard of Dunlap, Berniece McGinn of Ryan, Iowa, Georgene Albrecht and her husband, Fritz of Springfield, Nebraska, and Juanita McGinn of Spotsylvania, Virginia; other relatives and many friends.

Mass of Christian Burial was held 11:00 a.m., Monday, November 25, 2002, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison, Iowa. Fr. Edward Murray served as Celebrant of the Mass and grave side rites at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Cemetery in Denison. Organist Jean Cornelius provided the organ accompaniment for the St. Rose of Lima Choir. Sunday prayer services included a Legion of Mary Rosary at 4:00 p.m., and a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m., at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Servers of the Mass were: Conor Heiden, Conrad Heiden, and Colin Marten. Those serving as pallbearers were: Keith Petersen, Brian McGinn, Rickie Dykes, Eldon Hardekopf, Myron Peters, and Joel Franken. Michael J. Fitzpatrick (1919 - 2001)

Michael J. Fitzpatrick was born May 27, 1919, the son of Maurice and Minnie McGwire Fitzpatrick. He died Friday, January 12, 2001 at the Iowa Veteran's Home in Marshalltown, Iowa at the age of eighty-one.

Michael was born in County Kerry, Ireland. After the death of his mother in 1927, Michael moved with his family to the United States and settled in New York City. In 1929 the family moved to Crawford County. Michael received his education in the New York City Catholic School, the Pocahontas Pomery Catholic School and the Denison School.

In October of 1941, Michael entered the Coast Artillery, (A.A.) located at Camp Davis, North Carolina. He was honorably discharged in October of 1945 and returned to the Schleswig area where he worked for various farmers in the area.

Michael was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison. He was very active in the VFW Schleswig Post, State Deputy Inspector and Dept. Chief of the State of Iowa VFW.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his sister, Mary Irene Hansen and her husband Orville of Schleswig; two nephews, Jerry and Judy Hansen and their children Chad and Justin of Burnsville, Minnesota; Rick and Leslie Hansen and Kyle of Seattle, Washington; and other relatives and friends.

Ruth Pauline (Mesenbrink) Hopkins (1917 - 1987)

Ruth Pauline Hopkins died on March 14, 1987 in Sacred Heart Medical Center, Spokane. Rosary services were held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 18, at the Bonners Ferry Funeral Home chapel. Memorial services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 19, at St. Ann's Catholic Church with Fr. Donald Simmons officiating. Interment followed in Grandview Cemetery.

Ruth P. (Mesenbrink) Hopkins was born to Frank and Vinnie Mesenbrink on May 26, 1917, in Denison, Ia. She was raised and received her education in Denison.

In 1936 she followed the Mesenbrink family to Bonners Ferry where she met and married Tom Hopkins. Out of their 49 years of marriage five children were born. Ruth loved her family and maintained a good home for them. She loved her plants, sewing, crafts, and needlework. She was a member of the Firemen's Auxiliary for four years and maintained a 24 hour answering service for dispatching police and fire department calls. She was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church and a past member of St. Rose's Guild and the Altar Society.

Ruth is survived by her husband, Tom; five children, John of Spokane; Patricia A. Marion of Rochester, N.Y.; James of Post Falls; Pauline Rainey of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; and George of Bonners Ferry.

Ruth had 10 grandchildren, Danielle Hopkins; Bill, Lyle and Rich Purinton; Patti Jo, David, and Annette Hopkins, and Tom, Bob, and Marc Rainey. She is also survived by four sisters and two brothers, Marie Servoss, Helen Garver and Leonard Mesenbrink all of Bonners Ferry; Bob Mesenbrink of Olympia, Wash., and Lois Board of Louisville, Kty. Ruth was loved dearly by everyone who knew her. We will miss her terribly.

Mildred Dorthea Emma Hargens, age 85, of Battle Creek and formerly of Ida Grove, died Friday, January 23, 1998, at Willow Dale Care Center in Battle Creek, Iowa. Funeral services were held 10:00 a.m. Monday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Battle Creek. Burial followed in Morgan Township Cemetery, rural Schleswig. Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Ida Grove was in charge of the arrangements.

Born August 1, 1912, in rural Schleswig, Iowa, Mildred was the daughter of Willie and Leonora (Stender) Miller. She attended country school in Morgan Township, and was baptized and confirmed in the Friedens Church in Schleswig.

On September 12, 1937, she married Edwin J.H. Hargens in Battle Creek. The couple farmed in Ida County until retiring in 1982, when they made their home in Battle Creek. Mildred was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Battle Creek, where she was a member of the Ladies Aid and Church choir. She taught Sunday School for 23 years. Spending time with her family and socializing with friends were among Mildred's favorite things.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; four brothers-in-law, Laurits Rasmussen, August Miller, and Orville and Emil Hargens, and a sister-in-law, Vernett Rasmussen.

Survivors include one sister, Meleta Schultz of Schleswig; two brothers-in-law and their spouses, Clarence and Frances Hargens of Spokane, Washington and Ray and Hattie Hargens of Ida Grove; four sisters-in-law, Florence Miller of Ida Grove, Lydia Hargens of Holstein, Margaret Hargens of Arthur and Frances "Sadie" Barrett and her husband, Don of Ida Grove; and several nieces and nephews.

Ruth Wilhelmina (Kroll) Baak (1917 - 1998)

Ruth Wilhelmina Kroll Sander Baak was born May 18, 1917, the daughter of John and Anna Specht Kroll. She died at the Elkhorn Manor in Elkhorn, Neb., Thursday, October 29, 1998 at the age of eighty-one.

Ruth was born on the family farm north of Charter Oak. She was baptized in Christ June 10, 1917 and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith at St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, March 29, 1931. While she was still young, Ruth moved with her family to North Charter Oak and received her education at St. John's Lutheran School and the Charter Oak High School, graduating with the class of 1935.

May 6, 1939, Ruth was united in marriage to George E. Sander of Charter Oak. The couple settled in and around the Charter Oak area and were blessed with the birth of three children. Ruth owned and operated the Kenwood Country Store which she continued operating after her husband's death in 1954. In 1958, she moved to Charter Oak where she raised her family and cared for her parents until their deaths.

On December 20, 1967, Ruth was united in marriage to Henry Baak of rural Charter Oak. They made their home on the Baak family farm until 1975 when they moved to their present home in Charter Oak. Ruth was very active in her church, her community and the Senior Center, having been a cofounder and charter member. She enjoyed socializing with her many friends at various social events including quilting and playing cards at the center. She was a loving and caring mother and grandmother who enjoyed traveling to see her family.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husbands, George Sander and Henry Baak; one sister, Margaret Beck and one nephew, Michael Kragel. Survivors include two sons, John Sander and his wife, Caroline of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin; and Gordon Sander and his wife, Rose Mary of West Allis, Wisconsin; and one daughter, Susan Larsen and her husband, Gale of Omaha, Nebraska; seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; two sisters, Leona Kiem and her husband, Floyd of Frederick, Maryland and Marilyn Kragel and her husband, Paul of German Town, Wisconsin; several nieces, nephews and many friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 1, 1998 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Soldier Township, Charter Oak. Rev. Eugene Ernst officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Charter Oak Cemetery, Charter Oak. Brenda Christiansen provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Rubie Kastner who sang, "In the Garden" and "The Old Rugged Cross" and congregational hymn, "Nearer My God to Thee." Those serving as honorary pallbearers were Julie Serkowski, Sarah Sander, Karen Gotz, and Amy Sander. Pallbearers were Scott Serkowski, Duane Bollom, Jeremie Gotz, Chad Larsen, Scott Sander, Tim Sander and Ryan Larsen. A prayer service was held at 6 p.m. Sunday, November 1, 1998 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak. The family invited everyone at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak was in charge of arrangements.

D. Duane Anderson (1924 - 1996)

D. Duane "Andy" Anderson, 71, of Ames died Saturday at his home of complications arising from a possible stroke. Funeral services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames, with the Rev. Thomas Prochnow of the Gilbert Lutheran Church officiating. Military rites will be conducted at the memorial chapel, by the Ames American Legion Post. No. 37. Burial will be at a later date.

Born in Kiron, Mr. Anderson was the son of Levi A. and B. Faye (Waggoner) Anderson. He was a longtime resident of the Ames area and married Margaret M. Koprek on June 17, 1948, in Ames.

Having attended Iowa State University, Mr. Anderson was employed as a right-of-way technician with the Iowa Department of Transportation. He retired in 1983. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of the American Legion Post No. 37. He was also a member of the Iowa State University Fan Club.

Mr. Anderson is survived by four sons, Michael Anderson of Gilbert, Mark Anderson of Greeley, Colo., Kraig Anderson and Douglas Anderson, both of rural Story City; nine daughters, Kristin Couture of Napier, Linden Snyder of Humboldt, Loris Blask of Baileyville, Ill., Lael Peterson of Gilbert, Kathleen Steenhagen of Roland; Holly Coder of Athens, Ga., Rosemary Anderson of Mount Village, Ark., Susan Anderson of Harlan and Nancy Stolte of Des Moines; 30 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one sister, Norma Schwarz of Dunlap.

He was preceded in death by one brother and one grandson. Visitation was held at Stevens Memorial Chapel, with the family present.

Lorna A. (Listamann) Moeller (1932 - 1992)

Lorna A. Moeller was born the daughter of Henry and Lillian Meggers Listamann on May 27, 1932. She died at her home in rural Denison, on Wednesday, January 13 (1992) at the age of sixty years.

Lorna was born on a farm in Washington Township, nine miles south of Denison. She was baptized a Christian on September 10, 1932 at the Zion Lutheran church in Denison and received her ' early education in a rural school in Hanover Township until the seventh grade when she entered the Zion Lutheran School. She was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Zion on April 14, 1946 by Rev. C.W. Schmidt and subsequently attended the Denison Community High School where she graduated with the class of 1950. In her senior year in high school, Lorna became employed at the First National Bank in Denison, where she worked until the summer of 1953.

On January 6, 1952, she was united in marriage to Gilbert Moeller at Zion Lutheran Church by Rev. C.W. Schmidt. She joined her husband, in the service, in the summer of 1952 and in 1954, the couple returned to Iowa to settle on a farm in Paradise Township. They were blessed with the birth of six children. They farmed in Paradise Township until 1979 when they settled in their home on a farm in Hanover Township.

Lorna was a past member of Zion Lutheran Church and their Ladies Aid Society. She was currently a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Denison and was also a member of their Ladies Guild. She was devoted to her Lord and Savior through her church and Bible study groups.

She was a loving wife and caring mother and grandmother who provided her family with a memorable affection and devotion. She enjoyed her grandchildren and the time they spent with her shall always be remembered. In her free time, Lorna enjoyed sewing, caring for her flower and vegetable gardens and cooking.

She was preceded in death by her parents; twin sons. Dale and Darrell; two brothers, Erwin Listamann in 1992 and one in infancy; and one grandson, Shane Michael Jacobsen. Survivors include her husband Gilbert of rural Denison; and four daughters: Rhonda Harrington and her husband, Mike of Sioux City, Iowa; Pam Jacobsen of Kansas City, Mo.; Paula Lambert of Denison; and Thelma Hollander and her husband, Ron of Fort Dodge. Also five grandsons, three granddaughters, three brothers: Walter Listamann and his wife, Cheryl; Delaine Listamann and his wife, Dorothy; and Donald Listamann and Myra Keim all of Denison.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, January 16 (1992) at the Our Savior Lutheran Church in Denison. Dianne Furne provided the organ accompaniment for Henry and Marge Henningsen singing "How Great Thou Art" and congregational hymns "I'm But a Stranger Here" and "Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me". Pallbearers were: William Ahrenholtz, Leonard Ahrenholtz, Willis Ahrenholtz, Clarence Denker, Milfred Nemitz and Warren Hawn. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Walter A. Huebner and Sons' Funeral Home in Denison.

Lorraine Helen (Schulze) Seils (1931 - 1997)

Lorraine Helen Seils was born February 3, 1931, the daughter of Erwin and Helen Weiss Schulze. She died at the St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, Wednesday, July 9, 1997 at the age of sixty-six.

Lorraine was born in Humboldt, Iowa and was baptized in Christ on March 1, 1931 at the Zion Lutheran Church, Humboldt and later confirmed there in May of 1944. She received her education at the Humboldt Community School, graduating with the class of 1948 and received her teaching certificate from Lutheran College in Decorah, Iowa. After completing her education, Lorraine taught at the Hanover Township School.

On June 1, 1951, Lorraine was united in marriage to Loren Seils at Zion Lutheran Church, Humboldt. The couple settled on a farm north of Ricketts and were blessed with the birth of three children.

Lorraine taught in the Maple Valley School District from 1963, until retiring in 1994. While teaching she received her B.S. in Elementary Education from Parsons College. She served as the church organist at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Soldier Township for twenty-five years. In 1994, the couple moved to Denison and Lorraine acted as a substitute teacher for the Denison Community School. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Denison, their Fellowship Club and the National Education Association.

Lorraine was a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed her family. In her leisure time, she enjoyed reading, flowers, music and traveling.

Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents, and one sister in infancy. Survivors include her husband, Loren of Denison; two daughters, Renee Neddermeyer and her husband, Marion of Charter Oak; Merry Petersen and her husband, Bruce of Schleswig; one son, Douglas Seils and his wife, Jaclynn of Charter Oak; seven grandchildren, Timothy and James Seils, Aaron, Christy, Eric and Ashley Neddermeyer and Jordan Petersen, one brother, Vernon Schulze and his wife, Jackie of Humboldt, Iowa.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, July 12, 1997 at the Zion Lutheran Church, Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kasier and Rev. Daniel Gifford officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Karen Kahl provided the Organ accompaniment for soloist, Eldon Hardekopf singing "It is No Secret" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and congregational hymn "Just as I Am, Without One Plea". Those serving as honorary pallbearers were: Christy Neddermeyer, Ashley Neddermeyer and James Seils. Pallbearers were: Aaron Neddermeyer, Eric Neddermeyer, Jordan Petersen, Timothy Seils, Gailen Meseck, Bob Flanigan, James Else and Leon Maas. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Dorcas Society. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Margaret Ann (Bagford) Carlson (1942 - 1993)

Margaret Ann Carlson was born on August 15, 1942, the daughter of Harry and Mary Yvonne Mattingly Bagford. She died at the Heartland East Hospital in St. Joseph, Missouri on Saturday, January 23, 1993 at the age of fifty years.

Margaret was born on a farm near Wilmington, Ohio. She was baptized April 18, 1954 and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Concordia Lutheran Church in Dayton, Ohio on March 18, 1962. She grew up in the region and received her education in the Clarksville Community Schools and graduated from the High School there with the class of 1960. After completing her education, Margaret was united in marriage to Lloyd Carlson in Kettering, Ohio. The couple lived in Ohio for about one and one half years. They then moved to Omaha, Nebraska where they lived for two and one half years before settling in Ricketts.

While in Crawford County, Margaret was employed at the Denison Bulletin, Charter Oak Bank and Dubuque Packing. She also operated the Ricketts Grocery Store in Ricketts. She was a kind, considerate and loving wife and mother who cared for her family with affection. She was particularly joyful of her grandchildren; and enjoyed offering a helping hand to those in need.

Margaret was involved in many community and social activities. She served as mayor of Ricketts and was active with the EMT First Response Team and the E911 board. Interests that occupied her free time in addition to her family include: crocheting, camping and other crafts. She enjoyed collectibles that included Owls and enjoyed the peacefulness of reading. She was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Ricketts; their ladies aid; the Volunteer Fire Department; and the Physcian Recruitment Board.

She was preceeded In death by two infant sons. Survivors include her husband, Lloyd of Ricketts; two daughters, Lisa Ray and her husband Russell of Rosendale, Missouri; LaDonna Carlson of Galva, Iowa; two sons, Lloyd and his wife, Lashelle of West Des Moines, Iowa; and Logan of Fort Sill, Oklahoma; three grandchildren, Alissa and Austin Ray with their parents in Rosendale, and Lance Carlson with his parents in West Des Moines. Also surviving are her parents, Harry and Mary Yvonne Bagford of Clarksville, Ohio; and two sisters, Ada Schler and her husband Jacob of Phoenix, Arizona; Vicki Charlton and her husband, Joseph of Carmel, Indiana; and one brother, Barry Bagford of Clarksville, Ohio.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, January 26, 1993 at the St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Ricketts, Iowa with Pastor Robert Hines officiating the service and grave side rites at the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery in Charter Oak, Iowa. Natalie Bohlmann provided the organ accompaniment for soloist Penny Ewoldt and congregational hymns "What a Friend We Have In Jesus" and "Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me". Pallbearers were: Stephen Claussen, Robert Schreiber, Bob Matthiesen, Paul Briggle, Brian Boland and Brent Kelm. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Walter A. Huebner and Sons' Funeral Home in Charter Oak.

Melvin Edward Gustafson (1930 - 1997)

Melvin Edward Gustafson was born on a farm In Sac County, Iowa on May 19, 1930, the son of Richard and Minnie Nelson Gustafson. He grew up in the Kiron area, and attended school there and was graduated from Kiron High School with the class of 1947. Melvin started working as a teenager for Wallace Larson at the Hardware and Electric Store.

On September 8, 1951, Melvin was united in marriage to Emeline Schultz at the Evangelical Free Church in Kiron. Their union was blessed with three children: Rick, Joel and Cindy. They made their home in Kiron. In 1955 Melvin and Emeline ran a Sundries store in Kiron. In 1957 Melvin went to work in Schleswig as a salesman for Hollander Motors until 1986, and also delivered bundles of the Sioux City Journal around to various towns during 18 of those 29 years. In 1986 Melvin went to work for Johnson Motors in Denison where he remained until his retirement on t October 1, 1996.

Melvin accepted Christ as his Savior as a teenager. He was baptized at Bethel Lutheran Church in Kiron on July 20, 1982. He was an active church member and served on the church council. Melvin was in the National Guard for over 9 years and served on flood duty at Council Bluffs in 1950. He was also very active in his community serving as Mayor of Kiron from January 1968-1973 and again from 1976-1983. He was on the Fire Department for over 20 years and served as Fire Chief for a time. He served as President of the Community Club, and also served on the Crawford County Conservation Board. Melvin enjoyed golfing and bowling in his leisure time.

Melvin died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital on Thursday morning, September 25, 1997. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 67 years, 4 months, and 6 days.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents. Melvin was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Those left to cherish his memory in their hearts include his wife, Emeline of Kiron, Iowa; two sons and their wives, Rick and Vicki Gustafson of Ogden, Iowa, Joel and Kim Gustafson of Denison, Iowa and one daughter, Cindy Buck and her husband, Tracy of Carroll, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; one brother, Vernon Gustafson and his wife, DeArliss of Denison, Iowa; and one sister, MayDelle Hoefling and her husband, John of Rockford, Illinois, other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held 2:00 p.m. Monday, September 29, 1997, at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Kiron, Iowa with Rev. Victor N. Johnson officiating. Music for the service was provided by Hanford Ecklund singing, "In Times Like These We Need A Savior", "Rock of Ages" and "How Great Thou Art" with the congregation singing, "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" with Margaret Ann Buller serving as organist. Casketbearers included Phil Didier, Wayne Neumann, Dennis Wellsandt, Gerald Langholdt, Roland Talcott, and Bob Crampton. Burial was in the Kiron Cemetery at Kiron, Iowa. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.
