Louie August Hargens, Sr. (1913 - 1997)

Louie August Hargens, Sr. was born September 25, 1913, the son of George and Matilda Schultz Nemitz Hargens. He died Friday, May 9, 1997 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa at the age of eighty-three.

Louie was born and grew up on the family farm north of Ricketts. He was baptized in Christ and later confirmed in the Lutheran Faith at the St. Paul Lutheran Church near his home and received his education in St. Paul's Lutheran School and at Soldier Township rural school in District 9.

After completing his education, Louie first began his farming career, helping the family on the farm as he did while in school. In April of 1942, at the age of 28, Louie entered the U.S. Army and served his country in Europe during World War II. He was stationed at Camp Forest in Tallahoma, Tennessee where he received emergency medical training for one year receiving his orders for Europe. While stationed at Camp Forest, Louie served with the 449th Medical Collecting Company and began driving the ambulance and was responsible for transporting soldiers to and from the sick bay or hospital. During this time, he also served as camp cook.

Later that year, Louie met Eva Alcorn, and on February 6, 1943 the couple were united in marriage at the Tallahoma Lutheran Church in Tallahoma, Tennessee. The couple settled in an apartment near the camp for eight months before Louie was sent to Europe for the war effort. November 13, 1943, Louie left for Europe and Eva returned home to live with her family, awaiting her husbands return.

While in Europe, Louie served his country in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe, and was decorated with a Silver Star, European-African-Middle-Eastern Theater Ribbon, three Overseas Service Bars, one Service Stripe and a Good Conduct Medal. In November of 1945, upon completing his duties in Europe, Louie, Eva, and their first child, Louis Jr., returned to Iowa where they settled on a farm and were blessed with the birth of six more sons.

Louie felt most comfortable with his family and doing the work he loved so much, fanning and raising live stock. He devoted his life to his family, farming and caring for the land he felt God blessed him with. He was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather who was proud of his family, and was a sincere custodian of the land as evidenced by winning awards in the sixties for soil conservation. He was one of the first farmers in the region to begin terracing. His wisdom and charity were illustrations of his sincere Christian faith, and compassion for those in need. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hanover Township; American Legion Homer Hall, Post #66; Berne Coop in Ute and a former member of the National Farmers Organization.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Alvin; one sister, Dorothy Henkel; one granddaughter, Heather Hargens; three half-brothers, Walter, Ernest, and William Nemitz.

Survivors include: his wife, Eva of Charter Oak; seven sons, Louis Jr. and his wife, Susan of Schleswig; George of Sioux City, Iowa; William and her wife, Jody of Council Bluffs; Robert and his wife, Lori of Des Moines; Roger and his wife, Jane of Johnston, Iowa; Jack and his wife, Gayla; and Dean and his wife, Diane of Denison; twenty-one grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Esther Turner and her husband, Belton of Sun City, Arizona; Elonore Meggers and her husband, John of Charter Oak, and two sisters-in-law, Emma Hargens of Ricketts and Dena Nemitz of Denison.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., Tuesday, May 13, 1997, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hanover Township, Charter Oak. Rev. Eugene Ernst officiated the service and grave side services held at St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery. Shirley Stull provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Henry Henningsen, singing "Amazing Grace" and congregational hymns "Abide With Me" and "How Great Thou Art". Honorary pallbearers were: Jeanette Hargens, Johnna Hargens, Brandee Hargens, Carey Hargens, Mandy Hargens, Celeste Durant, Jennifer Durant, Emily Hargens, James Nemitz, Kristi Hargens, Amy Hargens, Pam Hargens, Glen Henkel, Terry Vogt, Leon Maas, Brandan Hargens, Nicholas Hargens and Brett Durant. Pallbearers were: Michael Hargens, Joseph Hargens, Jordan Hargens, Heath Hargens, Tanner Hargens, Justin Hargens, Travis Hargens and Ryan Hargens. Military Honors were American Legion Homer Hall Post No. 66, Charter Oak, Iowa. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak was in charge of arrangements.

Margaret Katherine (Miller) Krohnke (1910 - 1981)

Margaret Krohnke Dies July 13 At Sioux City

Margaret Katherine Krohnke was born on August 8, 1910 at Charter Oak, Iowa, the daughter of Nicholas and Elizabeth Mitchell Miller. She died on Monday, July 13, 1981 at St. Joseph Hospital, Sioux City, Iowa at the age of 70.

Margaret received her early education in at St. Boniface Catholic School in Charter Oak. She later graduated from the Charter Oak High School. Prior to her marriage, Margaret taught school for twelve years.

On June 21, 1939, Margaret was united in marriage to Harold Krohnke at Charter Oak. Together they made their home on a farm near Schleswig. Margaret taught school in Mapleton for three years and for four years taught at St. Lawrence Catholic School in Carroll. In 1975, they moved to Charter Oak during their retirement.

Margaret was active with 4-H girls in Schleswig and served on the Crawford County 4-H Committee. She was chairman of the Crawford County Cancer Society, was a past president of the Crawford County Womens Farm Bureau, was instrumental in forming the Charter Oak Library, and was a member of the Golden Oaks Senior Citizens at Charter Oak. She was also a life long member St. Boniface Catholic Church and a past member of St. Boniface Guild.

In addition to her parents, Margaret was preceded in death by two step brothers, Myron and Leo and one step sister Rita.

Survivors include, her husband Harold of Charter Oak, one daughter, Beth of Denver, Colorado, one son, Francis of Schleswig and four grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 15, 1981 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Charter Oak. Burial was in St. Boniface Cemetery. Father John Vakulskas officiated at the Mass and Graveside Rites. Serving as pallbearers were LeRoy Mathews, Melvin Miller, Wilbert Prussing, Gene Henningsen, John Bahnsen and Gaylen Bahnsen.

Norma Bertha (Rix) Briggle (1913 - 1973)

Mrs. Norma Bertha Briggle, daughter of the late Hugo and Julia Schultz Rix was born Feb. 20, 1913, and died at her home in Ricketts on July 21, (1973) at the age of 60. Lutheran faith and confirmed in the St. Paul's Lutheran church. She attended Ricketts and Hanover schools.

On May 20, 1937 she married Paul Briggle of Ricketts. They made their home in Ricketts. To this union a son was born. Mrs. Briggle was a member of St. Lukes Ladies Aid and an active member of St. Lukes Lutheran Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters, Edna, Leona and Mary. Survivors include her husband Paul, son Paul Edward Jr. of Ricketts, two grandchildren and a brother, Alfred Rix of Omaha.

Funeral services were held July 24 at St. Luke's Lutheran church in Ricketts with Rev. Mark F. Boecker officiating. Burial was at the Hanover Township Cemetery. Huebner Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Opal Naomi (Yankey) Whiteing (1916 - 2003)

Opal Naomi Whiteing was born on a farm in Crawford County near Denison, Iowa, February 4, 1916, daughter of Ira John and Mabel Ethel Shives Yankey. She was raised on the farm in East Boyer Township where she received her early education at East Boyer #2 rural school before being graduated from the Denison High School with the Class of 1933. Having received Normal Training Course during high school Opal taught for two years at Stockholm #9 rural school. Through the years she often spoke of her teaching experience with great fondness.

On October 10, 1936, Opal was united in marriage with Frederick Earl Whiteing at the First Methodist Church in Denison, Iowa. Their union was blessed with two children, Carol Anne and Merlin. They made their home on the family Century Farm in Hayes Township until 1995 when they moved to Denison, Iowa.

During the years on the farm, in addition to being a busy farm wife, mother and homemaker, Opal was a 4-H leader for 15 years, held all the offices for Farm Bureau Women, held numerous offices in the Olive Branch Chapter No. 205, Order of Eastern Star, Vail, Iowa and participated in the Friendly Homemakers Club. In later years both Earl and Opal enjoyed the Tall Corn Campers Club.

Opal was an extremely talented woman with energy and enthusiasm for life and a wonderful homemaker. She enjoyed new challenges of all kinds, an interesting recipe, craft project, brainteaser or card games and sewing projects. She was known for her quick step, capable hands and kind heart. Her greatest accomplishment was quilting with the Willing Workers Quilter Club and her quilting talents have been shared with her family and friends. Most of all Opal was a loving wife and mother. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, handiwork, gardening, traveling, camping, painting and reupholstering, always striving to do better. For many years the Whiteing family enjoyed spending Saturdays with the Everett and Bernice Crane family. In addition to her community and family activities Opal was a long time member of the United Presbyterian Church in Vail where through the years she was church treasurer for 21 years, Sunday School Teacher, assisted with their youth programs, Elder, President of the United Presbyterian Women and a Circle Chairperson.

Opal died early Saturday, September 6, 2003 at the Denison Care Center, Denison, Iowa. At the time of her death she had been blessed with 87 years, 7 months and 2 days.

Opal was preceded in death by her parents, Ira and Mabel Yankey, and one brother, Curtis Yankey and sister-in-law, Arlonne Yankey.

Those remaining to cherish her memory include her husband of over 66 years, Frederick Earl Whiteing now residing at the Denison Care Center, Denison, Iowa, one daughter, Carol Anne and her husband Ronald Borgstahl of Spring Hill, Kansas, one son, Merlin E. Whiteing and wife, Marie of Mapleton, Iowa, four grandchildren, Leigh Anne Frith and husband, the Rev. Mark Frith of Olathe, Kansas, Kaye Lynn Borgstahl of Gardner, Kansas, Charles Whiteing and wife, Janet of Slater, Iowa and Jane Whiteing of Ames, Iowa, four great-grandchildren, Aaron and Hannah Frith of Olathe, Kansas and Andrew and Aiden Whiteing of Slater, Iowa, one brother, Donald Yankey and wife, Roberta of Denison, Iowa, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, September 10, 2003 at the United Presbyterian Church in Vail, Iowa with Rev. Dr. Richard J. Shaffer, Jr. and Rev. Mark Frith officiating. Music for the service included Marie Whiteing singing "The Lord Is My Shepherd" and "I Know Who Holds Tomorrow" and the congregation singing "Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art". Ruth Noelck served as organist. Pallbearers were David Yankey, John Kempf, Ron Cose, Allan Natvig, James Whiteing and Russell Borkowski. Interment was at the Vail Cemetery, Vail, Iowa. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was privileged to be in charge of arrangements and services where an Eastern Star Service, conducted by the Olive Branch No. 205, Order of Eastern Star, Vail, Iowa, was held at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 9, 2003.

Peter Francis Joseph McGinn (1911 - 1983)

Peter Francis Joseph McGinn was born on June 2, 1911 near Denison, Iowa, the son of John and Margaret Sullivan McGinn. He died May 20, 1983 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, at the age of 71.

Peter received his primary education at St. Rose of Lima Catholic School in Denison. He later attended the Denison Public Schools graducating from Denison High School. After the completion of his education he farmed with his uncle. During World War II, Peter served in the United States Navy. After his release from the Military he returned to Crawford County.

On Sept. 2, 1946, Peter was united in marriage to Ruth Petersen at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison. Together they farmed north of Dow City for fifteen years before moving into Denison. At the time of his retirement, Peter was manager of the Iowa State Liquor Store in Denison. Peter was a long time member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. He was a past member of the Knights of Columbus. He was active in community affairs and well known for his activities with the Democratic Party.

In addition to his parents, Peter was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister. Survivors include his wife, Ruth of Denison, one daughter Mary McGinn of Denison; five sons, Phillip and Bernard both of Grand Lake, Colo., Stephen, Charles and Neil all of Fort Worth, Texas. Also surviving are three brothers, Donal McGinn of Dunlap, Marion McGinn of North Port, Fla. and Paul McGinn of Beltsville, Md. and one sister, Veronica (Mrs. Harvey Pettit) of Fredericksberg, Va. as well as other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held May 23, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison. Burial was in St. Rose of Lima Catholic Cemetery. Father Lloyd W. White and Father Allan Reicks afficiated in the mass and grave side rites. A parish rosary was recited at the funeral home the evening prior to the funeral. St. Rose of Lima Choir provided music for the services. Pallbearers were Reynold Marten, Pat Houston, Bob Schraeder, Eldon Handepopf, Wayne Steinkuehler and LaVern Boyens. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Ralph Hans Miller (1914 - 2000)

Ralph Hans Miller was born July 18, 1914, the oldest son of Charlie F. and Emma Tedsen Miller. He died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa, Monday, May 15, 2000 at the age of eighty-five.

Ralph was born in Grant Township, Ida County, near Ida Grove, Iowa. He was baptized in Christ on July 18, 1915 at the Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Church in Schleswig by Rev. W. R. Weizeler and later confirmed there on September 24, 1944 by Rev. R. F. Rinne. At the age of five and a-half years, he moved with his family to a farm in Cooper Township, Monona County, near Mapleton, Iowa. Ralph received his education at Cooper Center Number 5 School and after completing his education, he worked as a farmhand in Crawford County.

On December 10, 1938, Ralph was united in marriage to Arlene Louise Kropf at Vermillion, South Dakota and were blessed with the birth of three children, Lometta Mae, twins Barbara and Bobby. The couple started farming on March 1, 1939 in Woodbury County near Oto, Iowa for four years. March 1, 1943, the couple moved to Crawford County and farmed until January 4, 1956, when they had a farm sale and moved to their present home in Schleswig. After moving to Schleswig, Ralph worked at the Schleswig Lumber Yard and various jobs, including janitor in the Schleswig-Ricketts Community School for six years. He also drove a school bus for three years, retiring June 1, 1980.

Ralph was a devoted member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, their Brotherhood Organization and the Schleswig Community Club. He was also treasurer of the Sunday School, sang in the Barber Shop Chorus and in church as a soloist and a member of the church choir. Ralph was a very loving and caring husband, father and grandfather whose family was very important to him. He loved cars, polka and band dancing and was the social director of the Schleswig Community Club for hiring bands. In his leisure time, Ralph enjoyed traveling, collecting smoking pipes and four and eight track tapes.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Carl Miller. Survivors include his wife, Arlene of Schleswig; two daughters, Lometta Mae Bielenberg and her husband, Dale of Englewood, Colorado; Barb Beeck and her husband, Larry of Schleswig; one son, Bobby Miller and his wife, Janis of Plankinton, South Dakota; eight grandchildren, Troy Bielenberg and his wife, Karen, Tracy Morrell and her husband, Jamie; Dawn Lehnert and her husband, Scott; DaNae Krutzfeldt and her husband, Paul, Danielle Wingrove, Kardel Miller and his wife. Kim, Kamden Miller and his wife, Samantha, and Klayton Miller; one sister, Emma Jean Edgington and her husband, Frank of Mapleton; one brother-in-law, Lyle Kropf and his wife, Jean of Kiron; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, May 19, 2000 at the Church of Christ in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Bob Fritzmeier officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Dorothy Jessen provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Rubie Kastner singing, "How Great Thou Art" and "I Know Who Holds Tomorrow". Those serving as pallbearers were: DaNae Krutzfeldt, Danielle Wingrove, Troy Bielenberg, Kamden Miller, Dawn Lehnert, Klayton Miller, Kardel Miller and Tracy Morrell. The family invited everyone to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Women's Guild. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of arrangements.

Marvin Fredrick Woebke (1927 - 1995)

Marvin Fredrick Woebke was born March 6, 1927, in Crawford County, Iowa, the son of William and Helen Lehmann Woebke. He died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa on Thursday, February 16, 1995 at the age of sixty-seven.

Marvin grew up on a farm in Crawford County and was baptized in Christ on July 3, 1927 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and confirmed there on December 25, 1950. He received his education in a rural school near his home. He entered the U.S. Army on June 26, 1945 and received an honorable discharge on December 1, 1946, subsequently entering the U.S. Marines on September 12, 1951 and after receiving an honorable discharge on October 1, 1952, he returned to Denison to farm.

On November 14, 1954, he was united in marriage to Joann Fretz from Denison, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison by Rev. Carl Schmidt. The couple made their home in Denison and were blessed with the birth of two children, Deb and Dan. Marvin was employed for thirty years at Ted's Champlin Gas Station and D & L Service and for the past eight years at Dan's Redemption Service with his son. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and the Denison V.F.W. He was a loving husband and a devoted father and grandfather. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing, picnics with his family and toy trains. He also loved to watch stock car racing and NASCAR racing.

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Herman, Albert and Alvin. Survivors include his wife, Joann of Denison; one daughter, Deb Reinhart and her husband, Kerry of Odebolt, one son, Dan Woebke and his wife, Kris of Denison; three grandchildren, Stephanie Jo Reinhart of Odebolt, RaShel Rae and Daniel Marvin Woebke, Jr. of Denison; two brothers, Walter Woebke and his wife, Lorraine of Ida Grove; William Woebke and his wife, Helen of Forest Grove, Oregon; four sisters, Helen Ladwig and her husband, Melvin of Ida Grove; Alma Poggensee and her husband, John of Denison; Frieda Adams and her husband, Albert Jr. of Denison; Betty Klink and her husband, Robert of Westside; also two sisters-in-law, Marilyn Woebke of Manilla and Bernice Woebke of Arion and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Monday, February 20, 1995 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa with Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. Philip E. Bloch officiating the service and grave side rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Henry Henningsen singing "How Great Thou Art" and "The Old Rugged Cross" and congregational hymn "What a Friend We Have in Jesus." Honorary Pallbearers were: Stephanie Jo Reinhart, RaShel Rae Woebke and Daniel Marvin Woebke Jr. Pallbearers were: Richard Werneburg, Robert Heckmann, John Poggensee, Larry Landgraf, Robert Klink and Rob Klink. Military Honors were V.F.W. Post No. 2504, Denison. The Zion Dorcas Society served a lunch at the church for all in attendance at the service. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Lucille (Smith) Crane (1920 - 1996)

Lucille Crane was born February 11, 1920, the daughter of Richard and Clara Voege Smith. She died at the St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska on Monday, March 11, 1996 at the age of seventy-six.

Lucille was born in Jackson Township, Crawford County, north of Westside. She received her education at the Vail Community School, until the age of six, when she moved with her family to a farm northwest of Denison and continued her education at Goodrich No. 8. After receiving her education she lived at home and subsequently received her practical nursing course at the old hospital in Denison. She was employed in a tuberculosis hospital in Oakdale, Iowa and then returned home to the farm to help her brother and parents. In 1946, the family moved to a farm northwest of Vail in Milford Township. Her father, Richard, passed away in 1948 and Lucille continued to live with her mother and brother.

Lucille was united in marriage to Ira Crane in 1961 at the United Presbyterian Church in Vail. They settled on a farm near Vail for one year, before moving to their home in Vail. Lucille was employed as a receptionist in Dr. Flood's Vail office for twelve years before retiring. In her leisure time she enjoyed embroidery work, crocheting, quilting, reading, gardening and raising African violets. While at the Manilla Manor, she enjoyed bingo, reading, TV and radio, and especially visiting with her family.

She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Vail, past president of the Church Women's Association and Sunday school teacher. Also a fifty year member of the Eastern Star in Vail, the Past Worthy Matrons, a charter member and past president of Crawford County Past Matrons and member and past president of Willing Workers.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Ira on November 8, 1995, two brothers, Lloyd and Clifford, one daughter, Amy Meyer and one son, James Crane.

Survivors include two daughters, Eva Mae Chamberlain of Tucson, Arizona; Anna Marie Olson and her husband, Henry of Irwin; one son-in-law, Don Meyer and his wife, Jolene of Carroll; eight grandchildren and four foster granddaughters; five great-grandchildren and four foster great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Frances Boham of Council Bluffs; Lois Petska of Hershey, Nebraska; Betty Crane of Schleswig; one aunt, Lois Smith of Independence, Iowa; also many cousins.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, March 14, 1996 at the Presbyterian Church in Vail, Iowa. Rev. Thomas Buzbee officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Westside Cemetery in Westside, Iowa. Kevin Freese provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Glenn Freese singing "How Great Thou Art" and "In the Garden." Those serving as pallbearers were: Henry I. Olson, Paul C. Olson, Joe Thelen, Jack Boham, Jim Meyer, Louis Popp, Bill Crane and Dick Blair. There was an Eastern Star Service at 7.30 p.m., Wednesday at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Presbyterian Women. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Martin Frederick Spiegel (1923 - 2006)

Martin Frederick Spiegel was born June 21, 1923, the son of Harry and Mahela (Neubaum) Spiegel. He died at Eventide Nursing Home in Denison, Iowa, November 21, 2006, at the age of 83.

Martin was born on the family farm in rural Charter Oak, Iowa, baptized July 22, 1923, and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith on April 5, 1936 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hanover Township. He graduated from Charter Oak High School with the class of 1940. When Martin's father died suddenly in November of 1943, he began helping his mother take care of the family farm.

On September 16, 1945, Martin was united in marriage to Lois Ann Thomsen at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hanover Township. To this union three children were born. Together they continued to farm and in 1983 received a Century Farm award. In September 1995 the couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. In their later years Martin and Lois enjoyed going on bus tours together. Lois preceded Martin in death on January 25, 1997.

Martin devoted his life to caring for his family. He loved living and working on the farm. He was a 4-H leader and served on the extension council for many years. From 1976-1984 he served as a supervisor for Crawford County. He also held numerous offices at St. Paul Lutheran Church, was a delegate for the LCMS National Conventions, and was in charge of the cemetery board for many years, helping assist with the history and maintenance of the church. Most recently, he served on the board at Eventide Nursing Home.

In addition to his loving wife, Lois, Martin was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Harold in 1922, and his sister, Alvina in 1938.

Those left to cherish his memory include two sons, Richard and his wife Debbie, Mark and his wife Linda, all of Charter Oak; one daughter Lori Mozer and her husband, Dennis, of Rock Valley, Iowa. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 25, 2006 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hanover Township, Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. Eugene Ernst officiated the services and grave side rites held at St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Hanover Township, Charter Oak, Iowa. Organist Shirley Stull provided the organ accompaniment for the congregational hymns: "How Great Thou Art," "Lift High the Cross," and "Jesus, Lead Thou On." Those serving as pallbearers were: Russell Westphalen, Dean Bohlmann, Mike Ashbrook, Randy Bohlmann, Gailen Meseck, and Jerry Stull. Ruth M. (Algoe) Schmidt (1928 - 2007)

Ruth M. Schmidt was born on the farm west of Vail, Iowa, where she lived all of her life, November 10, 1928, the daughter of John Robert and Celinda Frances North Algoe. She was baptized at the United Presbyterian Church in Vail December 9, 1928, and confirmed there March 22, 1940. She received her early education, through the third grade, at the East Boyer #2 rural school and then attended Vail Public School through the 11th grade before being graduated from Denison High School with the class of 1949. She later attended C E School of Commerce in Omaha, Nebraska being graduated in 1962 with a JR Accounting Degree.

On February 28, 1968, Ruth was united in marriage with Raynard Schmidt at the Little Brown Church at Nashua, Iowa. They made their home on the farm west of Vail. In addition to being a busy homemaker, farmwife and mother, Ruth was employed through the years in the Dietary Department at Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, a school cook from 1958 until 1962 at Ar-We-Va, was employed in accounting at Marvin's Provisions from 1962 until 1964, and from 1964, until her retirement October 10, 1975, Ruth was employed as a Billing and Payroll Clerk at IBP in Denison. Following retirement Ruth and Raynard enjoyed spending the winter months at their home in Arkansas.

Ruth was a lifelong member of the United Presbyterian Church in Vail where she was a member and past president of the United Presbyterian Women and a member of the Willing Workers Quilting Club. She was an over 60 year member of the Olive Branch Chapter #205, Order of Eastern Star, Vail, Iowa, having served as Worthy Matron in 1952. In her spare time she enjoyed spending time with family, crocheting, quilting, reading and writing letters.

Ruth died Tuesday morning, February 6, 2007, at Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. At the time of her death she had been blessed with 78 years, 2 months and 26 days.

Including her parents, John and Celinda Algoe, Ruth was preceded in death by her first husband, Harold Albert Fett, two brothers, James and Ralph Algoe and three sisters, Bernice Crane, Lucille Carlson and Muriel Algoe.

Those remaining to cherish her memory include her loving and caring husband of over 38 years, Raynard Schmidt of Vail, one daughter, Barbara and husband, William Adams of Vail, one granddaughter, Melissa Adams of Vail, many nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, February 9, 2007, at the United Presbyterian Church in Vail, Iowa, with the Rev. Kevin J. Freese officiating. Music for the service was provided by Glenn Freese singing "In the Garden," "The Lord's Prayer" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" with Ruth Noelck serving as organist. Honorary pallbearers included Henry I. Olson, Ronald G. Crane, Margie Jordan, Marge Fett, Dale and Evelyn Crane, Henry J. and Anna Marie Olson, Albert and Marilyn Glienke, Gordon and Marilyn Fett and Gene and Marlene Schneider. Pallbearers were David R. Blair, Timothy Baughman, Terry Glienke, Darrell Schmidt, Dean Schmidt, Delbert Schmidt, Paul C. Olson and Byrle Algoe. Interment was at the Vail Cemetery, Vail, Iowa. Following the interment the family invited everyone to return to the church and join them for fellowship and a luncheon prepared and served by the United Presbyterian Women. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements where at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, February 8, 2007, an Eastern Star Service was held conducted by the Olive Branch Chapter #205, Order of Eastern Star, Vail, Iowa.

Edward Fred Jepsen (1925 - 2006)

Edward Fred Jepsen was born on February 2, 1925, the son of Edward P. and Elsa Beeck Jepsen. He died Wednesday, November 29, 2006 at the St. Luke's Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa at the age of eighty-one.

Edward was born on a farm near Charter Oak, Iowa. He was baptized in Christ on May 3, 1925 at the Evangelical Reformed Church in Schleswig, Iowa by Rev. Mauch and later confirmed there on April 30, 1939 by Rev. Rinne. He entered the United States Army on July 19, 1944, serving with the Military Occupational Specialty Honor Guard Company F 309 Regiment 78 Infantry Division during WWII. He was stationed in France, Belgium and Germany. Edward received his honorable discharge on May 18, 1946 having received an Army of Occupation Medal, Germany European African Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal and a Purple Heart. He returned to Crawford County and farmed for twelve years and then worked for various farmers, subsequently working for Lewis Clausen for thirty-three years.

On May 8, 1949, Edward was united in marriage to Dorothy Pauline Ackelbein at the St. Paul's Parsonage Hanover Township, Charter Oak by Rev. Nagler. In July of the same year, Edward became·a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. The couple made their home on a farm and were blessed with the birth of three sons. Edward was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hanover Township, Charter Oak. His hobbies included fishing, gardening, puzzles and he loved listening to music.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Deloris, one brother, Arnold and one brother-in-law, Robert Flink.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy of Charter Oak; three sons, Dennis Jepsen and his wife, Patricia of Schleswig; Marlon Jepsen of Charter Oak; and Kevin Jepsen and his wife, Tama of Des Moines; six grandchildren, Bethany Jepsen, Cara Dorhout, Amanda McNeese, Paul Jepsen, Eric Jepsen and Michael Jepsen; and two great-grandchildren, Emma Dorhout and Jeremiah McNeese; one brother, Freddie Jepsen and his wife, Shirleen of Charter Oak; three sisters, Norma Henningsen and her husband, Marlo of Denison; Leanna Hopp and her husband, Donald of Charter Oak; Marjorie Flink of Lincoln, Nebraska; and a sister-in-law, Florence Jepsen of Schleswig; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 2, 2006 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hanover Township, Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. Eugene Ernst officiated the services and grave side rites held at St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Hanover Township, Charter Oak. Organist Shirley Stull provided the organ accompaniment for the congregational hymns, "I'm But a Stranger Here," "Be Still My Soul," and "How Great Thou Art." Those serving as honorary pallbearers were: Jeremiah McNeese, Emma Dorhout, Bethany Jepsen, Amanda McNeese, and Cara Dorhout. Helen Emma Ida Lilie (Schultz) Petersen (1922 - 1998)

Helen Emma Ida Lilie Schultz Petersen McKee was born February 8, 1922, the daughter of Carl and Anna Nemitz Schultz. She died at her home in Denison on Tuesday, September 8, 1998 at the age of seventy-six.

Helen was born in Hanover Township, Crawford County, Iowa and was baptized in Christ on February 26, 1922 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hanover Township and later confirmed there on March 25, 1934 by Rev. Runge. She grew up on the family farm and received her education at St. Paul's Lutheran School, Hanover Township.

On February 16, 1941, Helen was united in marriage to August F. Petersen at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. The couple farmed in Crawford County for twenty-five years and were blessed with the birth of seven children. August died January 12, 1966. February 6, 1971, Helen was married to Dennis McKee in Papillion, Nebraska. They were divorced in July of 1998.

Helen was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Denison and the Denison Senior Center. She was a loving and caring mother and grandmother. She cherished family gatherings, decorating and getting ready for Christmas and the holidays. In her leisure time, Helen enjoyed plants, crocheting, playing Bingo and cards at the Senior Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, August, four brothers, Ben, Paul, Edgar and William Schultz and one step-sister, Minnie Huebner.

Survivors include four sons, Roger and his wife, Maria of Omaha; Gorden and his wife, Jo; Richard and his wife, MarJean, all of Denison; Scott and his friend, Karen of Sunnyvale, California; three daughters, Margorie Bruhn and her husband, Curtiss of Denison; Sharon Wellendorf and her husband, Dale of Ida Grove; Gail McLaughlin and her husband, Doug of Hubbard, Nebraska; fifteen grandchildren, Cindy Petersen and her husband, Robert Borneff, Mark Petersen and his wife, Kimberly; Brenda Birchard and her husband, Benton; Heidi Young and her husband, Patrick; Brent Bruhn and his friend, Carol; Starla Struck and her husband, Brian; Kyle Petersen and his wife, Jennifer; Michelle, Crystal and Ashley Petersen; Shane and Trina Wellendorf, Nichole, Brooke and Zackary McLaughlin; seven great-grandchildren, Theodore Petersen; Austin and Avery Birchard; Stephanie and Steven Young; Kayla and Dylan Struck; two sisters, Viola Dorale of Charter Oak; Erna Kastner of Kiron; two brothers-in-law, Elmer Petersen and his wife, Lorna of Schleswig; Louis Petersen and his wife, Lorna Ann of Denison; many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, September 11, 1998 at the Zion Lutheran Church, Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. Daniel Gifford officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery, Schleswig, Iowa. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Renee Miller singing "How Great Thou Art" and congregational hymn "Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus." Lillian Blanche (Stephenson) Busch (1925 - 2003)

Lillian Blanche Busch, daughter of Fred and Mary Maude Turner Stephenson, was born April 3, 1925 on a farm in Willow Township, Crawford County, Iowa. Upon being graduated from the Denison High School in 1944, she was employed at the Montgomery Ward Store.

On August 2, 1944, Lillian was united in marriage with Norman L. Busch at Denison, Iowa. In 1946 they moved to Stillwater, Minnesota where they were blessed with the birth of two daughters. In 1951 they moved to Deloit, Iowa after purchasing the Deloit Grocery Store, which they operated for fifteen years. Lillian retired in 1957. In her spare time Lillian enjoyed gardening, flowers, rocks, playing cards, entertaining, reading and traveling. For fifteen years she and Norman spent the winter months in Winter Haven, Florida.

Following Norman's death March 18, 1999, Lillian had resided at Reed House in Denison, Manilla Manor, Manilla, Iowa and Black Hawk Lifecare Center in Lake View, Iowa. Having been baptized and confirmed on February 23, 1986 at the United Methodist Church in Deloit she was currently a member of the First United Methodist Church in Denison. For over fifty years she was a member of the Deloit American Legion Post 690 Auxiliary. She enjoyed doing for others and will be greatly missed by all whose lives she touched.

Lillian died Wednesday morning, August 27, 2003 at the Black Hawk Lifecare Center in Lake View, Iowa. At the time of her death she had been blessed with 78 years, 4 months and 24 days.

Including her parents and her husband, Lillian was also preceded in death by one brother, Wayne Stephenson, and by one sister, Ardis Ehl.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 30, 2003 at the First United Methodist Church in Denison, Iowa, with the Rev. Alberta Ervin officiating. Music for the service was provided by Erin Bilsten singing "On Eagles Wings" and the congregation singing "Old Rugged Cross" and "The Hymn of Promise" with Nancy Miles serving as organist. Pallbearers were Donavon Gierstorf, Paul Frese, Ronald Mesenbrink, Roger Brink, Bill Brink and Mike Busch. Interment was at the Kiron Cemetery, Kiron, Iowa. Edward William Beermann (1919 - 1994)

Edward William Beermann was born September 4, 1919, the son of Henry and Olga Weller Beermann. He died at his home in rural Denison on Sunday, June 19, 1994, at the age of seventy-four years.

Edward was born on a farm south of Denison in Nishnabotna Township. He was baptized in Christ by Pastor William Freese on September 29, 1919 and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison on March 20, 1932. He received his education in a rural school near his home and graduated from the Defiance Community High School with the class of 1936.

He was united in marriage to Carmen Rath on March 29, 1942 at her parents' home in rural Denison by Rev. C.W. Schmidt. The couple was blessed with the birth of five children. Edward loved his family and was a kind and considerate husband and father who had a deep and sincere devotion for his Lord and Savior. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and a member of their voters' assembly.

In his early years of farming he worked with his family on the home farm. After marriage he settled on his own farm north of Defiance for eleven years. In 1953 he moved to his farm south of Denison where he successfully farmed and remained after retiring.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one infant brother, Alvin, twin infant sisters, one sister-in-law, Leone Beermann and one son-in-law, Darlo Jensen.

Survivors include his wife, Carmen, of Denison;·five daughters: Judy Winterrowd and her husband, Rev. Donald of Battle Creek; Marjorie Jensen of Harlan; Nancy Roehl and her husband, Roy of Winslow, Arizona; Connie Ahrendsen and her husband, Larry of Manning;·and Kathy Cook and her husband, David of Slater. Also, thirteen grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers: Walter Beermann of Denison; Harold Beermann and his wife, Joan of Defiance; four sisters: Alma Denker and her husband, Clarence of Denison, Dorothy Christoffersen and her husband, Lyle of Audubon; Irene Boeck and her husband, Gaylord of Schleswig; and Lorena Fink and her husband, Mervin of Denison. Other survivors include:·sister-in-law, Myrtle Rath of Denison, Gertrude Christiansen of Denison and one brother-in-law, Bob Rath and his wife, Garnet of Denison.

Loueen E. (Bielenberg) Petersen (1926 - 1997)

Loueen E. Petersen was born May 3, 1926, the daughter of Robert and Malinda Jacobsen Bielenberg. She died at her home in Denison, Iowa, Sunday, November 16, 1997 at the age of seventy-one.

Loueen was born near Vail, Iowa, where she lived with her parents. She was baptized in Christ and later confirmed on April 6, 1941 at the Zion Lutheran Church, Denison. She received her education at a rural school near her home and graduated from the Denison High School, with the class of 1944.

On May 30, 1945, Loueen was united in marriage to John J. Petersen at the Zion Lutheran Parsonage in Denison by Rev. C.W. Schmidt. The couple made their home in Denison for one year, before moving to a farm in Hanover Township, where they lived until returning to Denison in 1969. Loueen was employed at Farmland Foods from 1968, until retiring in 1989. In 1981, she was honored with an award for working five years, without missing a day.

Loueen was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Denison, where she taught Sunday School for several years. She was a very loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother whose number one priority was her grandchildren. In her leisure time, she enjoyed reading, flowers and gardening.

She was preceded in death by her father and one brother, Ronald in infancy. Survivors include her husband, John J. of Denison; three daughters, Linda Kruse and her husband, Verdean and sons, Todd and Troy of Ida Grove; Janice Steinkuehler and son, Chad of Denison; Lottie Krajicek and her husband, Ed and children, Kristina, Kari, Kellie and Jason of Dunlap; four sons, Loren (Pete) Petersen and his wife, Sandee and daughter, Jenny of Manilla; Joe Petersen and his wife, Tina and children, Nicholas and Ashley of Omaha; Jerry Petersen and children, Jeff and Grasha of Fort Collins, Colorado; Lyle Petersen and his wife, Saralee and daughter, Laura of Fort Dodge; six great-grandchildren; her mother, Malinda Bielenberg of Denison; two brothers, Don Bielenberg of Sacramento, California; Daryl Bielenberg of Denver, Colorado; one sister, Lanida Bielenberg of Omaha; many nieces, nephews and friends.

William E. Hanlin (1922 - 1994)

William E. Hanlin was born April 30, 1922, the son of Wilbur and Mae Goeury Hanlin. He died at the Marian Health Center in Sioux City, Iowa on Thursday, April 14, 1994 at the age of 71 years, 11 months and 14 days.

William was born on the family farm in Geneva, Nebraska and attended a rural school near his home. At the age of 13, his father died and William subsequently lived with his aunt and uncle on their ranch in Gillette, Wyoming until entering the U.S. Army in 1942. While in the Army, he served his country in Germany during WWII. After completing his military duties in 1946, William returned to Wyoming where he rejoined his aunt and uncle on the ranch. In 1949 he settled in Vail, Iowa where he made his home on Carl Brandburg's farm where he worked.

On March 28, 1951, William was united in marriage to Catherine Reisz at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison. The couple settled on a farm east of Vail and were blessed with the birth of three children. They farmed various farms in the Crawford County region until October of 1989 when ill health forced his retirement to Vail.

William was a loving and caring husband and father who enjoyed occupying his leisure time with his grandchildren. He liked watching people, fishing and playing cards and was very fond of his dog. He is a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Vail, the Vail American Legion and DAV member.

William was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Robert, and one sister, Doris. Survivors include his wife, Catherine of Vail; one son, Richard and his wife, Becky of Schleswig; two daughters, Joanne Banks and her husband, David of Staples, Texas and Eileen Quandt and her husband Ron of Kiron, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two brothers: James and his wife, Viola of Fairbury, Nebraska, John and his wife, Carol of Neligh, Nebraska; and two sisters, Margaret Fahlberg and her husband, John of Geneva, Nebraska and Ruth Roemmich and her husband, Art of York, Nebraska.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, April 18, 1994 at the St. Ann's Catholic Church in Vail, Iowa. Fr. Victor Ramaeker served as Celebrant of the Mass with interment at St. Ann's Catholic Cemetery in Vail. Irene Feilmeier provided the organ accompaniment for the St. Ann's Family Choir. Deloris Jean (Kroeger) McDole (1926 - 1986)

Deloris Jean McDole was born March 21, 1926 in Crawford County, Iowa the daughter of William and Katherine Dorenkamp Kroeger. She died July 1, 1986 at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison at the age of 60. Deloris spent her early years on a farm in Soldier Township and received her early schooling in the rural schools. She was baptized and later confirmed into the Lutheran faith.

On Aug. 19, 1946 Deloris married Iven Ewoldt and they made their home on a farm near Ricketts. Later they moved into Ricketts where she was a telephone operator for many years. Deloris later moved to Denison and was employed as a cashier for Cronk's Café for the past fifteen years.

On Feb. 14, 1980 she was united in marriage to Wilson McDole of Soldier at the Zion Lutheran Church at Denison. Mr. McDole died in October of 1985.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Deloris was preceded in death by one sister. Survivors include her children, Roger Ewoldt and wife, Rhonda of Arpin, Wisc., Richard Ewoldt and wife, Yvonne of McMinnville, Ore., Linda Ewoldt of Denison; ten grandchildren and two brothers, Pete Kroeger of Belmond and Arlo Kroeger of Denison.

Funeral services were held July 4, at 10:30 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Burial was in the Crawford Heights Memorial Gardens in Denison. The Rev. Kurt Kaiser officiated at the services. Mrs. Fred Rabe was the organist and Mrs. Sue Rosener was the soloist. Pallbearers were Maynard Albertsen, Carlie Beermann, Bill Blair, Richard Rosener, Eric Skoog, and John Skoog. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Janae Ardis (Mesenbrink) Meyer (1926 - 1988)

Janae Ardis Meyer was born on May 31, 1926, at Denison, Ia., the daughter of Benjamin and Mildred Brady Mesenbrink. She died on Sunday, May 22, 1988 at the Clarkson Hospital in Omaha, Neb., at the age of 61 years, 11 months and 22 days.

Janae was baptized on April 8, 1928, in the United Methodist Church in Denison and was confirmed on Dec. 23, 1956, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Janae grew up in Denison and received her education in the Denison Community School system.

She was united in marriage to Marvin Meyer of Manning, on March 2, 1944 at Denison. They made their home in Denison, and were blessed with three children. Marvin died on Dec. 26, 1984. Janae continued to make her home in Denison. She was employed as custodian for the Denison Community School from April of 1977 until her death. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, and the VFW Auxiliary, of which she was past president.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three brothers: Russell, Donavon and Benjamin Mesenbrink Jr.

Survivors include two sons, Benjamin of Council Bluffs, and Leslie R. of Kansas City, Mo.; one daughter Sue and her husband, Mark Merrell of Kansas City; one brother, Jarvis and his wife, Twyla of Dike; and one sister, Virginia and her husband, Robert Boeck of Denison.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 25, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison with Pastor James W. Ristvedt officiating at the services and grave side rites at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Mrs. Morris Kuhlmann was organist for Larry Boeck as soloist and congregational singing. Selections were "Abide With Me," "Twenty-third Psalm" and "I Know That My Redeemer Lives." Serving as pallbearers were Gordon Knights, Verle Massman, Davis Huskey, Edward Ladwig, Scott Schurke and Steve Speake. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison.

LaVerne Alma Dorothy (Steinkuehler) Malone (1920 - 1941)

Services for Mrs. Wayne Malone were held at the Lutheran church Wednesday afternoon at 2, in charge of the Rev. C. W. Schmidt, with interment in Oakland cemetery. Pallbearers were Eddie Sprang, Albert Hast, Paul Block, Wm. Andrew Granger, Wilbur Andresen and Earl Rogers.

LaVerne Alma Dorothy Steinkuehler was born June 20, 1920, near Buck Grove, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Steinkuehler, and her early youth was spent on a farm near Buck Grove.

Nov. 9, 1939, she was married to Wayne Malone and this union was blessed with one son.

About two weeks ago the departed, with her husband and son, went to Walnut, where she became ill and was taken to the University hospital at Iowa City last Friday. Medical help, however, proved of no avail and she passed away last Saturday afternoon at the hospital, at the age of 21 years, 4 months and 1 day.

She is survived by her husband and son, Leo: her parents, of near Buck Grove; six brothers, Reinha, Elmer, Alvin, Victor, Orville and Donald; one sister, Mrs. Matilda Grell, Denison, and her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Hollander, Manilla.

She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church in Denison in March, 1941.

LaMae Mary Ann (Moeller) Miller (1923 - 1996)

IDA GROVE, Iowa - LaMae Mary Ann Miller, 73 of Ida Grove, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 1996, at the Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Ida Grove, with the Rev. Benjamin Ray officiating. Burial will be in Morgan Township Cemetery near Schleswig, Iowa. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present from 2 to 4 p.m., at Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Ida Grove.

Mrs. Miller was born Sept. 12, 1923, in Crawford County, Iowa, to Robert and Violet (Friedrichsen) Moeller. She graduated from Schleswig High School in 1941.

She married Raymond R. "Buster" Miller on Sept. 30, 1945, in Schleswig. The couple owned and operated Buster's Produce in Schleswig until 1953, when they moved to a farm northwest of Ida Grove. From 1958 to 1960, they operated a bakery in Ida Grove. From 1964 until retiring, she worked at Horn Memorial Hospital. The couple moved into Ida Grove in 1967. He died Nov. 23, 1988.

She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where she was involved in Presbyterian Women and had served as clerk of session. She was also a member of American Legion Auxilary, and had been active in 4-H when her children were growing up.

Survivors include four sons and their wives, Daryl and Jeanne of Battle Creek, Iowa, Duane and Mary Jo of Urbandale, Iowa, Randy and Kimberly of Ida Grove, and Michael and Carla of Iowa City, Iowa; one daughter and her husband, Vicki and Ron Mildenstein of Iowa City; 13 grandchildren, Timothy, Christi, Jennifer, Jill, Jeremy, Gretchen, Zachary, Gabrielle, Danielle, Noah, Nathan, Jimmy, and Sara Jane; one brother, Robert Moeller of Le Mars, Iowa; three sisters, Charlene and her husband Howard Iversen of Vail, Iowa, Maxine Hansohn of Bettendorf, Iowa, and Sharon and her husband Charles Bandow of Denison, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one granddaughter, Beth Ann; one grandson, Thomas; and one brother, Richard Moeller.

Margaret Nancy (Green) Maack (1920 - 1998)

Margaret Nancy Maack was born October 11, 1920, the daughter of David and Ida Kusel Green. She died on Friday, September 25, 1998 at her home in Charter Oak, Iowa at the age of seventy-seven.

Margaret was born in Jerauld, South Dakota, where she lived with her parents and received her education. She was baptized in Christ and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak, Iowa on July 30, 1939.

On December 5, 1940, Margaret was united in marriage to Herman Maack in Spencer, Iowa by Rev. O.C. Geisler. The couple settled on a farm in Hanover Township, Crawford County, Iowa, where they continued to live until moving to Schleswig in 1966. Margaret was employed by Horn Memorial Hospital and worked for Home Health Care. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. She loved to play the organ and do art work and in her leisure time Margaret also enjoyed sewing and ceramics.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Herman on November 23, 1976, one son, Allyn on September 10, 1993, and one great-grandson, Lance on December 17, 1994.

Survivors include three sons, Larry Maack and his wife, Leila of Charter Oak; Loren Maack and his wife, Christine of Anchorage, Alaska; Gailyn Maack of Miami, Florida; one step-son, Ronnie Maack and his wife, JoAnn of Charter Oak; six grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, September 30, 1998 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. Daniel Gifford officiated the service and grave side rites held at the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Charter Oak, Iowa. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Larry Boeck singing "Nearer, My God, to Thee" and "Beautiful Savior" and congregational hymn "I Know that My Redeemer Lives". Pallbearers were: Aaron Cornelius, Jesse Huisinga, Duane Wessel, Dave Meseck, Lyle Meseck and Kyle Plagge. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Dorcas Society. Orrin Albert Moeller (1921 - 2001)

Orrin Albert Moeller was born June 15, 1921, the son of Oscar Asmus and Elsie Baker Moeller. He died Thursday, December 20, 2001 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa at the age of eighty.

Orrin was born in Schleswig, Iowa and was baptized in Christ at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig on July 24, 1921 and later confirmed there on April 5, 1936. He attended the Schleswig Community School, receiving a certificate for perfect attendance and never being tardy at the age of seven.

Orrin lived at home working with his father for the City of Schleswig. He also helped his grandmother with the care of his invalid mother and later his father. After his parents death he lived for a couple of years in a trailer home in Schleswig, before moving to the Schleswig Retirement home. When his health became too severe to live alone he entered the Eventide Nursing Home. For a short while he lived at the Denison Care Center, then returning to Eventide.

Orrin was a lifelong member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. He thoroughly enjoyed his nephews and niece, especially when they were little. He also enjoyed socializing with family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his grandparents, Albert and Henrietta Baker and his aunt, Hilda Baker. Those who remain to cherish his memory include one brother, P.J. Moeller and his wife, Barb of Schleswig; two nephews, Ross Moeller and his wife Pam, Scott Moeller and his fiancée, Kristi Hargens; one niece, Terri Webb and her husband, Jack, and their families, all of Denison.

Funeral services were held 1:30 p.m., Sunday, December 23, 2001, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. Rev. Merle Mahnken officiated the service and grave side rites held at Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Organist Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "Lift High the Cross", "Let All Together Praise Our God", and "I Know That My Redeemer Lives". Those serving as pallbearers were: Aaron Moeller, Amy Moeller, Jack Webb, Scott Moeller, Ross Moeller, Ryan Webb, and Jesy Webb. The family invited everyone in attendance to return to the church and join them in fellowship and lunch served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of the arrangements.

Paul Frederick Lueck (1921 - 1981)

Paul Frederick Lueck was born June 7, 1921, in Washington Township, Crawford County, the son of Fred and Minnie Bertha Hitz Lueck. He died Aug. 5, 1981 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, at the age of 60.

Paul was baptized as an infant and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He received his early education in rural schools as the family made their home on a farm near Denison. After the completion of his education, Paul was employed by various farmers in the area for many years. Shortly after the establishment of the Farmland Foods plant in Denison, Paul began his career with Farmland. He had been employed with the meat packer for over 23 years.

Paul was a member of the American Legion in Denison and a member of the American Legion and V.F.W. in Schleswig since his release from the military after serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include one sister, Mrs. Frieda Lingle of Denison, and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were Aug. 8 at 2 p.m. at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery with full military rites. The Rev. Jack Heck of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison officiated at the services. Pallbearers were Glen Dieber, Roger Greder, Virgil Hast, August Hast, Jr., Melvin Hoffmeier and Don Murray. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Selma Katherine Louise (Retman) Dercien (1921 - 1963)

Mrs. Fred Dercien died at the Sunders Rest Home on Aug. 31 (1963) after a lingering illness. She had been hospitalized since January in hospitals in Iowa City and at Denison.

Selma Katherine Louise Retman, daughter of Louis Retman and his wife, Malinda, nee Krayenhagen, was born at Buck Grove on July 6, 1921. In early infancy she was baptized and later was affiliated with the Zion Lutheran church of Denison by the rite of confirmation.

On Sept. 16, 1940, she was wed to Fred Dersien and to this marriage one son was born. They made their home in Denison since that time.

Her funeral service was held at the Zion Lutheran church on Sept. 4, with the Rev. Carl W. Schmidt officiating. Interment was made in the Memorial Gardens with the following serving as pallbearers; Tom Clarey, Dewey Gorma, Emil Greder, Meinhard Jaacks, Jack Murphy and Walter Neumann.

Survivors are the widower, her mother, Mrs. Louis Retman of Denison; three sisters, Mrs. Lillian Reetz of Denison, Mrs. Ella Wingrove of Arion and Mrs. Edna Mae Kremin of Dow City, and son, Robert Dersien of Racine, Wis. Also surviving are three grandchildren. Her father preceded her in death.

Violet B. Simon (abt. 1922 - 2001)

Violet B. Simon, 79, beloved "Mom", Grandma, Sister, Aunt and friend, passed away March 17, 2001 at her home in Sun City.

She was born in Vail, Iowa where she met and married Everett Simon. They moved to Phoenix in 1962.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Everett and a sister Mary Alice Nelson. Violet is survived by three children, Sandy Ellis, Chuck Simon and Larry Simon; her son-in-law James Ellis; three grandchildren; Kevin Ellis, Sharon Hoffner and Crystal Simon; one great grandson Thomas Craig; six brothers and sisters, Pearl Jepsen of Denison, Bonnie Jensen and her husband Gerald of Arizona, Earl McCollough and his wife Mary Ann of Denison; Dick McCollough and his wife Eunice; Harold McCollough and his wife Lois; and Clyde McCollough and his wife Jeanette all of Vail; many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

A memorial Mass was held Friday March 30 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joachim's Catholic Church in Sun City.

Marian Lucille (Malone) Grohmann (1921 - 1987)

BATTLE CREEK, Iowa -- Marian Lucille Grohmann, 66, of Battle Creek, died Monday (May 11, 1987) at her residence in Battle Creek after a long illness. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Frist Presbyterian Church in Battle Creek. The Rev. James Krapf will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be after 11 a.m. today in the Christensen Funeral Home in Battle Creek.

Mrs. Grohmann, the former Marian Lucille Malone, was born March 18, 1921, in Denison. She married Frank Grohmann April 11, 1958, in Spencer. The couple made their home in Battle Creek. He died June 9, 1974, in Omaha.

Survivors include three sons, Ronald Klinker of Omaha, Robert Klinker of Fort Worth, Texas, and Dale Klinker of Sacramento, Calif.; four daughters, Mrs. Ed (Janice) Hedberg of Minneapolis, Joleen Dohm of Omaha, Joann Kambers of Des Moines and Joyce Street of Winnebago, Neb.; two sisters, Mrs. Bob (Dorothy) Kamp of Sioux City and Mrs. Joe (Darlene) Trexel of Staples, Minn.; a brother, Elmer of Florida; 26 grandchildren and 11 great-grand-children.

Jenell J. (Bielow) Meseck (1952 - 1999)

Jenell J. Meseck was born December 15, 1952 the daughter of Vernon and Evelyn Hinrichsen Bielow. She died at the Bryan General Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska on Thursday, February 18,1999 at the age of forty-six.

Jenell was born in Denison, Iowa and was baptized in Christ on January 4, 1953 at the St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak, Iowa and later confirmed there on March 19, 1967. She received her education at St. John's Lutheran School and the Charter Oak-Ute Community School, graduating with the class of 1971.

After completing her education she worked at Denison Drug, until her marriage to Jerry Meseck on September 1, 1972 at St. John Lutheran Church by Rev. Albert Prouty. The couple made their home in Charter Oak. Jenell worked part-time as a secretary at St. John Lutheran Church, Rick's Clover Farm and D & J Foodtown in Charter Oak. In 1991, Jenell began working at Topko Drug in Denison, where she was employed
at the time of her death.

Jenell was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak. She was a loving, caring wife, mother and grandmother who was also their best friend. Jenell enjoyed her job at Topko where she was always willing to help people.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Evelyn in 1973 and one son, Jeremy in 1977. Survivors include her husband, Jerry of Charter Oak; two daughters, Jennifer Hennings and her husband, Tim of Ricketts; Jessica Meseck of Council Bluffs; two grandchildren, Kristin and Tyler at home in Ricketts; her father, Vernon Bielow of Charter Oak; her mother-in-law, Erma Wingrove and her husband, Jay of Charter Oak; and many other relatives and friends.

Joel Eugene Fink (1954 - 2002)

Joel Eugene Fink was born July 15, 1954, the son of Mervin and Lorena Beermann Fink. He died Sunday, October 27, 2002 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa at the age of forty-eight.

Joel was born in Audubon, Iowa and was baptized August 8, 1954 and confirmed April 7, 1968 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. He received his elementary education at Zion Lutheran School in Denison, and graduated from Denison High School with the class of 1972. After high school, Joel attended truck driving school in Texas. He then purchased his first semi tractor, a 1966 red Ford Cab Over and began Fink Trucking in Deloit, keeping his office in the basement of his home.

On August 4, 1973, Joel was united in marriage to Cathy Bengford at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. The couple made their home in Deloit, Iowa and were blessed with the birth of four children, Jennifer, Matt, Jay, and Nick.

As Joel's business grew, he expanded by adding to his fleet of trucks and trailers and purchased two buildings and a parking lot in Deloit. Due to the success of his business, Joel began hiring employees and changed the name of his business to Diamond "F" Transportation.

Today, his single semi tractor trucking business has grown to more than fifty employees, thirty-five semi tractors and fifty trailers. He was very involved in the communities of Deloit and Denison, serving on the Deloit City Council, and continuously offered his support to Denison athletic programs, the Early Childhood Development Center, and Kids Castle. He also helped the local high schools Driver Education Programs when they needed assistance with Truck Safety Courses.

He truly enjoyed his business, and considered his time there not only as his job, but also as his hobby. In his spare time, Joel liked going to Louisville, Kentucky for truck shows. He also enjoyed boating at Lake View with his family. He was a kind and compassionate person who had a special talent for lifting anyone's spirits, no matter how terrible of a day they were having. He loved his family more than anything and was a very special husband, father, grandfather, son, and brother. His bright personality left more than just an impression on those who knew him, and many are proud to call him their friend. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents. Survivors include his wife, Cathy of Deloit; four children, Jennifer Dau and her husband, Kevin of Denison; Matt of Deloit; Jay of Des Moines, and Nick of Deloit; two granddaughters, Kambrie and Kierah Dau of Denison; his parents, Mervin and Lorena Fink of Denison; three sisters, Janet Ertle and her husband, Marc of Louisville, Colorado; Jeanie Fink of Deloit; and Tami Reynolds and her husband, John of Deloit; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ray and Shirley Bengford of Deloit; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; nieces and nephews; aunts and uncles; other relatives and many, many special friends.

Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, October 31, 2002 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. David Sewing officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Deloit Cemetery in Deloit, Iowa. Organist Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for soloist Sue Rosener as she sang "On Eagles Wing's" and "How Great Thou Art". The congregational hymn was "I Know That My Redeemer Lives". John Robert Anderson (1926 - 1990)

John Robert Anderson, known by many as Bob, was born September 18, 1926, in Crawford County, Iowa, the son of John A. and Jessie Honaker Anderson. He died April 8, 1990 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa at the age of 63 years.

As a child, Bob lived with his parents on a farm North of Dunlap where he received his education. February 11, 1945, Bob committed his life to the Lord through Holy Baptism and was Confirmed in the Lutheran Faith at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Dow City, Iowa.

March 6, 1949, Bob and Rosemary Ketelsen were united in marriage and together, they made their home on a farm South of Charter Oak, Iowa. In 1952, they moved near Vail, Iowa where they remained until 1960 when they returned to Charter Oak, Iowa. In 1967, they moved to Schleswig where they lived until 1975.

Bob and Loretta Wulf were united in marriage in 1977 and together the two made their home on a farm near Schleswig and later moved to Charter Oak. Bob retired in 1989. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, before transferring his membership to St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hanover Township, and then Zion Lutheran Church in Denison where he was currently a member.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters; and is survived by: his wife, Loretta; seven daughters: Wanda Moeller and her husband Dennis of Charter Oak, Iowa; Ernestine Gierstorf and her husband Darrell of Richmond, Virginia; Rebecca Anderson and her husband Allen of Omaha, Nebraska; Roberta Meseck of Schleswig, Iowa; Nancy Friedriqhsen and her husband Burton of Denison, Iowa; Julie O'Brien and her husband Timothy of Marietta, Georgia; and Lori Meyer and her husband Jerry of Denison. Also surviving are: five step children; fifteen grandchildren; nine step grandchildren; two sisters: Betty Randol of Ricketts, Iowa, and Marilyn Mattson Jessen and her husband Johnny of Pine Bluffs, Wyoming.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 11, 1990 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Pastor Kurt Kaiser officiated at the services with interment in the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Mrs. Diane Furne was organist and Henry Henningsen was soloist. Solo selections were: "The Old Rugged Cross" and "How Great Thou Art". The Congregational Hymn was "Be Still, My Soul". Honorary pallbearers were: Arthur Boettger, Elmer Gierstorf, LeVerne Creese, Richard Greene, Murlyn Aronson, Fred Jacobs, Harvey Vetter and Arnold Detlefsen. Jolene Mildred (Clausen) Beeck (1940 - 1998)

Jolene Mildred Beeck was born April 3, 1940, the daughter of Leonard and Mildred Miller Clausen. She died Wednesday, December 2, 1998 at the St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska at the age of fifty-eight.

Jolene was born in Ute, Iowa, was baptized in Christ on May 30, 1940 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hanover Township, and confirmed on May 29, 1955 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig. She received her education at a rural school in Hanover Township and the Schleswig Community School, graduating with the class of 1958.

On October 4, 1959, Jolene was united in marriage to Larry Beeck at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig, Iowa by Rev. Wiese. The couple settled on an acreage south of Schleswig. In 1964, they moved to a farm southwest of Schleswig, purchasing the farm in 1972.

She was a very active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig, their Ladies Aid and Altar Guild. She also documented and counted the weekly offerings. Jolene was involved in community service and volunteer work, as a 4-H leader and blood drive coordinator for the Red Cross.

Jolene was a very devoted wife, loving and caring mother, grandmother and daughter. She loved being involved in family activities, socializing with friends and traveling. In her leisure time, she enjoyed working on scrapbooks.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents. Survivors include her husband, Larry of Schleswig; two daughters, Tami Walker and her husband, Drew of Bourbonnais, Illinois; Tina Beeck and her husband, GregThurman of La Grande, Oregon; three sons, Todd Beeck and his wife, Connie of Kansas City, Missouri; Michael Beeck and his wife, Tracy of Denison; Mark Beeck and his wife, Theresa of Schleswig; eight grandchildren, Krista, Shawna and Chelsey Walker, Carly Beeck, Beeck Thurman, Kirsten Beeck, Garrett and Madison Beeck; her parents, Leonard and Mildred Clausen of Schleswig; her mother-in-law, Lillian Beeck of Denison; many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Saturday, December 5, 1998 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Merle Mahnken officiating the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Art Beeck provided the organ accompaniment to his solo of "The Lord's Prayer" with Marlene Hight providing the organ accompaniment for the congregational hymns "How Great Thou Art", "The Lamb", and "Lift High the Cross." Pallbearers were Quent Strandburg, Wade Gurney, Trevis Beeck, Derek Dowty, Ken Miller, and Steve Beeck. Fellowship with the family and lunch served by the Immanuel Ladies Aid was provided at the church following the grave side rites. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of the arrangements.

Joy Dean Faye (Teut) Baak (1945 - 1994)

Joy Dean Faye Baak was born February 21, 1945, the daughter of Melvin and Clara Clausen Teut. She died at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital in Clarinda, Iowa at the age of 49 years.

Joy was born in Ute, Iowa and lived with her family on a farm near Schleswig, Iowa. She was baptized and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig.

She began her early educaton at a rural school near Schleswig and graduated from the Schleswig High School in 1963. She attended Steward's Hair School in Sioux City and began her employment as a beautician in Kiron, Iowa.

On August 31, 1968, Joy was united in marriage to Paul Baak at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. The couple settled in Denison and later moved to Arcadia. In 1972 they moved to Clarinda. The couple were blessed with the birth of one daughter, Jodi. Joy enjoyed her work and was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig.

She was preceded in death by her father, Melvin in 1990. Survivors include: her daughter Jodi Strasser and her husband, Christopher; two granddaughters, Danielle and Carissa Strasser, all of Des Moines; her mother, Clara Teut of Schleswig. Also two sisters, Janet Beeck and her husband, Robert of Denison and Marliss Lenz of Omaha; nieces, nephews and friends.


Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 28, 1994 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa with Rev. Donald Wagner officiating the service and graveside rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "How Great Thou Art" and "Nearer, My God, to Thee". Pallbearers were: Robert D. Jackson, Phill A. Judy Ann (Schultz) Hennings (1942 - 1985)

Judy Ann Hennings was born on Dec, 13, 1942, in Battle Creek, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Gertrude Schultz. She died on Saturday evening, Jan, 5, 1985, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa at the age of 42.

Judy spent her formative years in Crawford County, receiving her formal education in the Schleswig and Denison Community Schools. She graduated from the Denison High School in 1960. Following graduation, she attended a business school in Council Bluffs.

On June 5, 1966, Judy was united in marriage to Ver-deen Hennings at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Together they made their first home in Rock Port, Mo. In 1981, they returned to Iowa making their home in the Charter Oak community. Judy was an active member of the St. John's Ladies Aid, the weekly Bible class, and taught in the St. John Sunday School.

Survivors include her husband, Verdeen of Charter Oak; two sons, Brent and Bruce, both at home in Charter Oak and her mother, Mrs. Gertrude Schultz of Denison. Also surviving are one brother, Wayne Schultz and wife Betty of Denison and one sister, Ima Jean, Mrs. LeRoy Hansohn of Kiron as well as a host of other relatives and friends. Judy was preceded in death by her father Fred in 1960.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 1985, at 2 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. Burial was in the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. The Rev. L. C. Gebhardt officiated at the services. Art Beeck served as organist with the St. John's Ladies' Choir singing, Abide With Me and Kristin Kuhlmann singing The Lord's Prayer. Congregational hymns included How Great Thou Art and I Know That My Redeemer Lives. Serving as pallbearers were Curtis Schultz, Freddie Friedrichsen, James Aldag, Norman Christiansen, Robert Kroll and Harold Lorenzen. Serving as honorary pallbearers were Ralph Larson, Floyd Kesterson, Robert Johannsen, James Howschultz, Robert Miller and Robert Bodensteiner. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Charter Oak.

Keith Schwenn (1953 - 2006)

God took Keith home to be with his father on April 29, 2006. He experienced a heart attack driving thru Reno, Nevada. Life started in Denison, Iowa on February 18, 1953 when twin sons were born to Alvin and Eleanor Schwenn. He was baptized and confirmed in faith at Zion Lutheran Church. He graduated from Denison High School in 1971, lettering in football and being active in FFA.

On September 8, 1973 he was united in marriage to Jean Klemme. They were blessed with four sons; Matthew, Jared, Nickolas and Adam. His work career took many avenues; police officer, carpenter, maintenance and truck driver.

Fun times were spent coaching little league and flag football, camping and fishing; fixing up cars; refinishing houses and growing peppers to make great salsa! His "boys" were very important to him, he tried hard to keep up with their lives and activities. The main hub for gatherings was Grandpa and Grandma Schwenn's farm.

He is lovingly survived by his mother, Eleanor; sons - Matthew (Betsy); Jared (Melissa), Nickolas and Adam; twin brother, Kenneth (Kristol); sister Barbara Francis (Harry); grandchildren; Joey, Kaitlyn, Devan, Jack and Blake Schwenn; many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

His father, Alvin passed away January 29, 2006. Keith, we will remember you as a kind, gentle soul, we give you all of our love on your journey home, keep watch over us and thanks for all of the great years of being a son, father, grandfather and brother. "The Schwenn Boys"

David Sewing officiated the services and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Organist Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for soloist Troy Gehlsen singing, "The Lord's Prayer" and for congregational hymns, "I'm But a Stranger Here" and "I Know that My Redeemer Lives". Those serving as honorary pallbearers were: Joseph J. Schwenn, Kaitlyn J. Schwenn, Blake C. Schwenn, Jack T. Schwenn, Devan Schwenn, Dennis J. Fineran, Darvin Landgraf, Gregg Goodenow, William Knot and John Hansen. Pallbearers were: Matthew J. Schwenn, Jared S. Schwenn, Nickolas J. Schwenn, Adam K. Schwenn, Steve Schmidt and William Wendt. Kenneth Henry Braasch (1942 - 1992)

Kenneth Henry Braasch was born on Jan. 7, 1942, the son of Henry Martin Detles John Braasch and Mildred Margeret Quandt Braasch. He died on Sept. 13, 1992 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Ia. at the age of 50 years.

Kenneth was born on the family farm seven miles southwest of Schleswig, Ia. and attended Ricketts and Schleswig Community Schools. He was baptized in Christ and confirmed in the Lutheran faith on June 9, 1957 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig.

After completing his education, Kenneth became employed at Farmland Foods where he worked until retiring after thirty-one years and four months on Feb. 25, 1990.

On Dec. 17, 1960, Kenneth was united in marriage to Darlene Mary Monroe at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. The couple settled in Deloit and were blessed with the birth of three children.

From 1966 to 1978, Kenneth became involved in stock car racing. In March of 1984, he started Braasch Repair and in August of 1989, he began operating Okomo's Lounge, all in Deloit. In the two most recent years, Kenneth was active in modified stock car racing. He enjoyed sports and especially enjoyed deer hunting in addition to an occasional fishing trip with his friends. Bowling was an active past time as was challenging someone to a game of foosball.

Kenneth was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and an active member of the Deloit Volunteer Fire Dept. He was a loving, considerate caring husband and father who loved the thought of expanding his family with more
grandchildren. He was affectionately referred to by his friends as Ken Bud and Okomo and always displayed his happy and warm nature with a smile.

He was preceded in death by his father; one brother, Gilbert and one sister, Jo Ann Gladys Braasch. Survivors include his wife, Darlene of Deloit; one son, Kevin Braasch of Deloit; two daughters, Debra Rae Krajicek and her husband, John of Deloit and Kelly Renee Young and her husband, Craig of Omaha, Neb. Also three grandchildren; his mother, Mildred Margaret; and two sisters, Betty Jean Wulf and Connie Marie Mulligan both of Deloit.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wedneday, Sept. 16, 1992 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison with Pastor Kurt Kaiser and Pastor Philip E. Block officiating the service and graveside rites held in the Deloit Cemetery in Deloit. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for soloist Henry Henningsen singing, "How Great Thou Art" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and congregational hymn, "I'm But a Stranger Here." Pallbearers were Larry Lohrmann, Darwin Meyer, Allen Schurke, Paul Pobanz, Rick Schurke and Mark Dirks. the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Kenneth Vernon Kahl (1947 - 1998)

Kenneth Vernon Kahl was born July 17, 1947, the son of Herman and Doris Burmeister Kahl Jr. He died on Sunday, January 25, 1998, at the Immanuel Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of fifty from leukemia, which was discovered on January 8, 1998.

Kenneth was born at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, Iowa. He received his education at a rural school, near his home and the Dow City Arion Community Schools, graduating with the class of 1965. He was baptized in Christ on October 5, 1947 at the St. John's Lutheran Church, Buck Grove, Iowa and later confirmed there in 1961. After completing his education, Kenneth went to work on a dude ranch, later working on construction. After the death of his father in 1969, Kenneth returned to the family farm to continue the farming operation.

On November 27, 1976, Kenneth was united in marriage to Edith Haugen at the Duluth Cathedral Chapel in Duluth, Minnesota. The couple settled on a farm east of Dow City. Kenneth was a life long member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Buck Grove and served as treasurer of St. John's. He loved farming and toy farm machinery. In his leisure time he loved to read. He also loved weiner roasts, having coffee at Denison Seed and making people laugh.

He was preceded in death by his father and his grandparents. Survivors include his wife, Edith; two sons, Aaron and Kenneth Jr.; his mother, Doris Kahl all of Dow City; two sisters, Pamela Jahn and her husband, Dennis of Ute; Kathryn Ten Eyck and her husband, Robert of Dow City, two brothers Donald Kahl and his wife, Barbara and Trent Kahl and his wife, Donna, all of Dow City; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 1 P.M., Wednesday, January 28, 1998 at the Zion Lutheran Church, Denison, Iowa. Rev. Larry Lemke officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "For Me to Live Is
Jesus", "Just as I Am, Without One Plea" and "How Great Thou Art". Pallbearers were: Dennis Bergstadt, Duane Hollander, George Janssen, LeRoy Stover, Brent Bauer, Roger Lueck, Terry Kolln and John Shields. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by St. John, Buck Grove, Bethlehem, Dow City and Zion, Denison Ladies Aids.
