Mildred Martha (Dieber) Lietz (1912 - 1993)
Mildred Martha Lietz, the daughter of Peter Greder and Salome Dieber, was born Feb. 2, 1912, at Denison, Ia. She attended the country schools near her childhood home.Mildred was united in marriage to Henry William Lietz at Odebolt on Dec. 29, 1937. She and Henry made their home on a farm near Webb until moving to Spencer in 1969. She was a member of First English Lutheran Church in Spencer.
Mildred passed away in Spencer on Feb. 3, 1993, at the age of 81. Preceding her in death were her parents; four brothers, Fred, Peter, Arthur and Walter; and four sisters, Clara, Selma, Ann and Edna.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Henry; one son and his wife, Norman and Deanna of Marathon; two daughters, Norma Jean and her husband, Ronald Whalen of Spencer and Carol and her husband, Ted Janes of LeMars; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Helen Mitchell of Dow City; three brothers, Kenneth of North Platte, Neb., David of Johnstown, Neb., and Paul of Clovis, Calif., as well as other relatives and friends.
Services were held Friday, Feb. 5 at 2 p.m. at First English Lutheran Church in Spencer with Reverend Walter Quandt and Reverend Chris Gugel, officiating. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery in Spencer. Organist was Mardell Knudsen and hymns were "Nearer My God to Thee" and "Abide With Me." Pallbearers were Bob Walker, Tom Walker, Raymond Conlin, Brant Lietz, Mike Walker, John Conlin, William Conlin, and Bryan Lietz. Baumgarten Funeral Home in Spencer was in charge of arrangements.

Muriel Ruth (Pollock) Brodersen (1917 - 1995)
Muriel Ruth Brodersen, daughter of Joe and Ruth Claudy Pollock was born April 4, 1917 on a farm near Denison, Iowa.She attended rural schools and was graduated from the Denison High School with the class of 1935. From 1935 to 1941 she taught in rural schools in Crawford County.
On December 27, 1940 Muriel was united in marriage to Eldon Brodersen at the Methodist parsonage in Denison, Iowa. Their union was blessed with four children; Roger, Larry, Karen and Jean. They made their home on a farm southeast of Denison.
Muriel was a lifetime member of the Denison Presbyterian Church, where she enjoyed helping in any way she was needed. She loved spending time with her family, working crossword puzzles, planting flowers and playing bingo.
In 1989 Eldon and Muriel retired from farming and moved into their home in Denison where they remained until they went to live at Eventide in October of 1993. It was here that Muriel's death occurred on Tuesday, May 16, 1995. At the time of her death she had reached the age of 78 years, 1 month and 12 days.
Muriel was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Ruth Pollock, a brother Charles and a sister Hazel.
Those left to cherish her memory are her husband Eldon Brodersen of Eventide; two sons, Roger Brodersen and his wife Rose Mary of Denison, Iowa and Larry Brodersen and his wife Linda of Charter Oak, Iowa; two daughters, Karen Johnson and her husband Dale of Wayne, Nebraska and Jean Nihsen and her husband Vernis of Denison, Iowa; two brothers, Ray Pollock and his wife Dorothy of Vail, Iowa and J.R. (Tony) Pollock and his wife Alyce of Forest Grove, Oregon; a sister Helen Powell of Denison, Iowa, twelve grandchildren and two great grandchildren; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Vernon Kuhlmann and his wife Bernice of Charter Oak, Iowa and other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held Thursday, May 18, 1995 at the United Presbyterian Church in Denison, Iowa at 10:30 am. with the Reverend Thomas Buzbee officiating. Ann Voggesser served as organist and Henry Henningsen as vocalist singing "The Lord's Prayer" and "How Great Thou Art". Pallbearers were Aaron Brodersen, Brian Brodersen, Michal Nihsen, Simone Dubois, Jennifer Johnson, and Tracie Nihsen. Honorary bearers were Jessica Johnson, Mike Pollock, Robert Pollock, Craig Brodersen, and Randall Voss. Interment was in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Myra Hamann (1915 - 2002)
Myra Hamann was born at Schleswig, Iowa on May 7, 1915, the daughter of John and Anna Hamann. She passed away on May 21, 2002. She attained the age of 87 years. Myra was received into God's Kingdom of Grace through the sacrament of Holy Baptism on August 27, 1915, and confirmed in the Christian Faith at Friedens Evangelical Church on Palm Sunday, 1929.Myra was raised at Schleswig where she attended the Morgan #7 country school, she graduated from Schleswig High School in 1933. Myra graduated from Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa Magna cum Laude in 1937. She was president and general chairman of the Sigma Tau Delta Sorority during her college years.
Myra taught in numerous schools in the area including Grand Meadows, Bagley, Manning, Storm Lake and Ida Grove. A most rewarding part of her life was seeing her students succeed in life. She was remembered by many of her students with thanks and corresponded with many of them throughout her life. Myra was a poet and a writer of stories, she especially enjoyed writing about the history of Schleswig. Many of her writings were published. Myra loved spending time with her family, she especialy enjoyed family gatherings.
Myra was preceeded in death by her parents, Anna and John Hamann and sister, Garnett Bahnsen, Garnett's husband, Martin Bahnsen and one niece, Ramona Gierstorf.
Myra is survived by Delbert Gierstort, husband of Ramona Gierstorf, and four nieces, Iona Nelson and husband Melvin of Sumers, Iowa; Ladonna Bumann and husband Richard of Castana, Iowa; Janice Weltz and husband Willie of Denison, Iowa; Joleen Schwarz and husband Ken of Plano, Texas; two nephews John Bahnsen and wife Arlis of Schleswig; Gaylen Bahnsen and wife Marvel of Schleswig.
Funeral services were held Friday, May 24, 2002 at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Juanita Gillies officiated the service and graveside rites were held at Morgan Cemetery, Schleswig. Wendy Bumann provided the organ accompaniement for congregational hymns. Thos serving as pallbearers were: Dennis Gierstorf, Joel Nelson, Steven Bumann, Alan Weltz, Travis Bahnsen, and Aaron Bahnsen. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of the arrangements.

Myrtle Eileen (Christensen) Rath (1911 - 1999)
Myrtle Eileen Rath was born March 30, 1911, the daughter of James and Mary Christensen. She died at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa, Monday, November 22, 1999 at the age of eighty-eight.Mytrle was born in Ute, Iowa and was baptized in Christ on May 31, 1924 in Ute and later confirmed on December 18, 1963 at the Zion Lutheran Church, Denison, Iowa. She graduated from the Denison High School in 1930 and later received her Bachelor and Masters degrees in education from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. After completing her education she taught school until her retirement.
On June 4, 1950, Myrtle was united in marriage to Herbert Rath in a double ceremony with her sister, Evelyn and brother-in-law, Norman Hulsebus at the Methodist Church in Dow City, Iowa. Myrtle was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. In addition to her love of teaching and history, Myrtle enjoyed traveling and needlework.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Herbert, one sister, Violet Keating, four brothers, Oscar, Harry, Leonard and twin brother, Arthur Christensen; three brothers-in-law, Werner Rath and his wife, Anita, Ed Beermann, and Walter Rath; and one sister-in-law, Clara Weller and her husband George.
Survivors include one sister, Evelyn Hulsebus of Missouri Valley, one brother, Lyle Christensen of Oceanside, California; four sisters-in-law, Gertrude Christensen of Denison; Irene Christensen of Vail; Carmen Beermann of Denison; Gertrude Christensen of Stanton, California; one brother-in-law, Robert Rath and his wife, Garnett of Denison; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 1 P.M., Friday, November 26, 1999 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "The Old Rugged Cross", "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and "Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound". Honorary pallbearers were: Margaret Kuhl, Delores Fastje, Anita Hammer, Helen Starek, Doris Culmer, Alice Watje, Alice Cose and Beth Clark. Pallbearers were: Robert Christensen, Larry Ahrendsen, Ernest Poggensee, Duane Hollander, Don Hoemann, Clark Martens and Everett Miller. The family invited everyone to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

George R. Berndt (1921 - 1991)
George R. Berndt was born May 25, 1921, the son of William and Anna Mathias Berndt. He died Dec. 11, 1991 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa at the age of 70 years.George was born on a farm in Grove Township, Shelby County, Iowa where he lived with his parents. He received his education in rural schools in both Shelby and Crawford Counties. In 1950, George purchased a farm in Milford Township, Crawford County and moved with his parents to that farm where he cared for them.
On August 4, 1973, George was united in marriage to Alyce Segebart at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison by Fr. Lloyd White. The couple made their home on the farm where George continued farming until 1991 when he retired as a consequence of ill health, and moved to Denison.
George was a kind, considerate and loving man who cared for his parents and his family, and was never too busy to give assistance to anyone in need. He occupied his free time with the serenity of fishing, the challenge of hunting and enjoyed carpenter and mechanic work. He was baptized a Christian at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Dunlap and was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison.
George was preceded in death by his father in 1952 and his mother in 1971; his brothers, Chris and Charles; and sisters, Mary Hartmann, Bertha Frazier and Sophia Berndt.
Survivors include his wife Alyce of Denison; his daughter Twila Segebart of Denison; three brothers, Fred and Olga Berndt, John and Enid Berndt, Frank and Marlene Berndt all of Denison; three sisters, Stella Hartmann of Manilla, Martha Curry of Nebraska, and Clara Ledehoff of Denison and many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian burial was held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 13, 1991 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison. Fr. Andrew Hoffmann was celebrant of the Mass and graveside rites held at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Cemetery in Denison. Jean Cornelius provided the organ accompaniment for the St. Rose choir. Pallbearers were: Randy Lilleholm, Louis Poggensee, Clarence Lappe, Glen Segebart, Pat Lappe and Larry Frazier. The family invited everyone to join them in fellowship and lunch served by the St. Rose Ladies Guild. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Walter A. Huebner and Sons' Funeral Home in Denison.

Florence Hattie Irene (Steckelberg) Hass (1921 - 2003)
Florence Hattie Irene, the daughter of Max and Anna Lamaack Steckelberg, was born March 4, 1921, on a farm in Crawford County, Iowa. At the age of 5 she was baptized and later confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla. Florence attended country school, East Boyer Township #5, and then graduated from Manilla High School in 1939. She received additional training as a nurse's assistant and a child develpment worker.On September 25, 1940, Florence was united in marriage with Marvin William Hass by Trinity Lutheran Minister Reverend Israel. Six children were born to this union. They farmed mostly in the Botna area then moved to Manning in 1953. Marvin died in an auto accident on November 25, 1954.
Florence later, on June 1, 1974, was united in marriage with Walter F. Lapel, at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning by Reverend Heincke.
Flroence [sic] worked at the Manning Plaza Nursing Home shortly after it opened. After seven years there she then worked at Woodward State Home for three years. She retired on August 26, 1980 and she and Walter continued to live in Manning. Walter died February 5, 1997.
Florence was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. In her spare time she enjoyed playing cards, watching TV, and visiting with family and friends. She did a lot of volunteer work at the Senior Citizen Center, Plaza Nursing Home and Elderbridge Agency.
Florence died unexpectedly on Tuesday, January 14, 2003 at home in Manning, Iowa. She was 81 years, 10 months and 10 days of age.
Besides her husbands, Florence was preceded in death by her parents; brothers and sisters: Henry Steckelberg, George Steckelberg, Annie Miller, Ida Hilbert, Charles Steckelberg, Minnie Bandow, Max Steckelberg Jr., Frank Steckelberg, and Walter Steckelberg; grandson Kent Koon; and two great-grandchildren Joshua Kasperbauer and Jordan Thies.
Florence is survived by six children: Ketih [sic] Hass and his wife Sandra of Manning; Kenneth Hass and wife Jolene of Loveland, Colroado [sic]; Kathryn Cooper of New Zealand; Kay and her husband Robert Subbert of Panora; Kevin Hass of Woodward; and Kurt Hass of Griswold; three step-children: Roger Lapel and his wife Theresa of Bloomington, Minnesota; Larry Lapel and his wife Donna of Council Bluffs; Beverly and her husband Richard Curlee of Omaha, Nebraska; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brother John Steckelberg and his wife Leita of Denison; in-laws Selma Carter of Manilla; Helen and husband Raymond Schuldt of Denison; Earl Schmidt of Schleswig; Vernetta Hass of Denison; Lester Hass and wife Viola of Harlan and Merlin Hass and wife Verna of Manning; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 18, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning, Iowa. Pastor Daniel Vogel officiated the service and interment held at the Manning Cemetery in Manning, Iowa. Barb Grove served as organist for congregational hymns, "In The Garden" and "Abide With Me". Those serving as Casketbearers were Teresa Kasperbauer, Lanny Hass, Lisa Hodne, Danny Hass, Jeff Cooper, Robert Subbert, Jr., Angela Hass and Anissa Irlmeier. Honorary Casketbearers were Kim Butler, Sheila Armant, Robin Birky, Michelle Hass, Heather Hass, Jennifer Cooper, Chad Hass, Elvis Hass and Florisa Hass. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them for lunch and fellowship back at the church. The Ohde Funeral Home in Manning was in charge of the arrangements.

Harold Han Nickolas Wulf (1923 - 2000)
Harold Han Nickolas Wulf was born December 22, 1923, the oldest son of Nickolas and Martha Lackman Wulf. He died Thursday, October 5, 2000 at the Rose Vista Home in Woodbine, Iowa at the age of seventy-six.Harold was born near Vail, Iowa, where he lived with his family. He received his education in a rural school near his home and the Denison High School. After completing his education he worked as a farm hand and drove for Amoco.
On March 22, 1953, Harold was united in marriage to Loretta Hoffmeier at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. The couple made their home in Deloit and were blessed with the birth of six children. They managed the Broadway Inn in Denison and later Harold drove for Amoco Oil and Russ Wulf Trucking.
Harold lived in Deloit until moving to the Rosa Vista Home due to failing health. Harold loved to fish and enjoyed socializing with family and friends in a game of cards.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents; one son, David; three brothers, Arnold, Lorenz and Rudolph Wulf; three sisters, Velma and Viola Wulf, Vera Pruel and her husband, Louie.
Survivors include four sons, Russel and his wife, Mary of Omaha; Dale; Kenneth and Robert Wulf, all of Deloit; one daughter, Connie Swift and her husband, Gaylin of Woodbine; the children's mother, Loretta Anderson of Deloit; twelve grandchildren and three step-grandchildren; one brother, Vernon Wulf of Denison; two sisters-in-law, Betty Wulf of Deloit and Kathy Wulf of Denison; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, October 7, 2000 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa. Rev. David Loeschen officiated the service and grave side rites held at the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Kiron, Iowa. Jean Cornelius provided the organ accompnaniment for soloist, Renae Claussen singing "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me". Those serving as honorary pallbearers were: Herman Schneider, Clyde McCollough, Richard Holihan, Dick Lorenzen, Paul Pobanz and John Hogan. Pallbearers were: Ronnie Preul, Gary Vetter, Randy Preul, Rick Vetter, Allan Preul and Rick Wulf. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Earl L. H. Schwingdorf (1920 - 2005)
Earl L. H. Schwingdorf was born December 12, 1920, in Willow Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the son of Henry and Elsie Kroeger Schwingdorf. He died Tuesday, August 16, 2005 at the Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, Iowa at the age of eighty-four.He was baptized in Christ on October 15, 1921 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa and confirmed on March 25, 1934, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Ute, Iowa. He received his early education at a country school and later attended Dunlap High School.
On March 16, 1941, Earl was united in marriage to Wilhelmina Wellner at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Soldier Township, Charter Oak, Iowa. The couple made their home near Schleswig, where Earl worked as a farm hand and later started farming himself. The couple later made their home south of Charter Oak, where they were blessed with the birth of two children. Earl moved to Charter oak in 1980 after the death of Wilhelmina.
Earl was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak. He was a very loving and caring husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who enjoyed his family very much. He also enjoyed spending his time farming, fishing, playing cards, listening to polka music, and visiting with family and friends.
Earl was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Wilhelmina; one brother, Werner Schwingdorf; and one sister, Clara Jahn.
Those survivors left to cherish his memory include one daughter, Bonnie Meseck and her husband, Lawrence of Charter Oak; one son, Blaine Schwingdorf of charter Oak; five grandchildren: Neal Meseck and his wife, Lisa of Exira; Brenda Christiansen and her husband, Lorne of Ute; Leon Meseck and his wife, Julie of Charter Oak; Earleen Barber and her husband, Andy of Waverly; and Paula Meseck and her fiance, Ben Monk of Vermillion, South Dakota; five great-grandchildren: Cody, Andrew, Ashton, Aric, and Hailey; nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, August 16, 2005 at the St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. Richard Merrill officiated the service and grave side rites held at the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery in Charter Oak. Brenda Christiansen provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "I'm But a Stranger Here", "Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus". Those serving as pallbearers were: Anthony Schmieder, Lorne Christiansen, Steve Langholdt, Dennis Berens, Leon Meseck and Neal Meseck. A Prayer Service was held at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak was in charge of arrangements.

Darrell E. Ohl (1926 - 1998)
Darrell E. Ohl was born near Dunlap, Iowa, October 3, 1926, the son of August Emil and Annette Mae Brown Ohl. He was raised in the Dunlap area receiving his education in the local rural schools. He was received into God's Kingdom of Grace through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism and confirmed in his Christian Faith April 14, 1940 at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Dunlap. Following his education he was employed in farming with his father and other area farmers.From December of 1948 until his dischage in December of 1951, he served his country as a Sergeant in the United States Army.
On March 29, 1952, Darrell was united in marriage with Virgine Bandow at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. They made their home in Denison where their union was blessed with four daughters, Denise, Pam, Rhonda and Shelley.
For 35 years, from 1953 until his retirement in 1988, Darrell was employed in road maintenace and mechanical work with the Iowa Department of Transportation. His retirement years were spent in Denison where he enjoyed painting, horse racing, walking, gardening, farming part time, card games and socializing with family and friends. His family was of utmost importance to him and he especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.
Darrell died suddenly Monday morning June 15, 1998 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 71 years, 8 months and 12 days. Including his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, JoAnn Mitchell.
Those who remain to cherish his memory include his wife of over 46 years, Virgine Ohl of Denison, four daughters, Denise Ten Eyck of Omaha, Nebraska, Pam and husband, Dr. Douglass Soseman of Denison, Rhonda Ohl of Denison and Shelley and husband, Bob Starman of Denison, four grandchildren, Joey Ten Eyck of Omaha, Nebraska, Christopher Soseman and Taylor and Madison Starman all of Denison, one brother, Francis Ohl and his wife, Vivian of Woodbine, Iowa, three sisters, Loretta and husband, Alfred Segebart of Battle Creek, Iowa, Loreen Eyer of Denison and Corlys and husband, Hubert Boysen of Arthur, Iowa, his step-father, Leon Ransom of Denison, nieces nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., Thursday, June 18, 1998 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison with the Rev. Kurt R. Kaiser and the Rev. Daniel G. Gifford officiating. Music for the service was provided by Gwen Ecklund singling "Just As I Am" and "Amazing Grace" with the congregation singing "I Know That My Redeemer Lives". Karen Kahl served as organist. Casket bearers included Larry Lavelle, Ronald Petersen, Steve Bandow, Wyatt Bandow, Scott Bandow and Dale Bandow. Military Honors were provided by the American Legion Post 8, Denison, Iowa. Interment was in the Nishnabotna Cemetery at Manilla, Iowa. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Carl William Beermann Jr (1926 - 1991)
Carl William Beermann Jr. was born the son of Carl and Lena Tinnamann Beermann on June 12, 1926, in Crawford County, near Buck Grove. He died on Dec. 21, 1991 at the age of 65 years, six months and nine days.Carl was born on the farm near Buck Grove where he grew up and attended a rural school near his home. He continued his education in the Denison Community High School and graduated in 1944.
He was baptized at St. John's Lutheran Church in Buck Grove on July 4, 1926 and confirmed there on Mar. 17, 1940, and has been a member of the church since that time.
On Jan. 5, 1947, Carl was united in marriage to Helen Burmeister at St. John's by the Rev. L.W. Nutzmann. The couple made their home on the farm he grew up on and lived for twenty-nine years. They were blessed with eleven children, twenty-two grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
In February of 1977, the family moved to Denison, where he worked for Builders Redi-Mix and Frehse Sheet Metal Works. For the last nine years, he was employed by the Crawford County Landfill. In his free time, Carl enjoyed collecting toy farm tractors as a hobby.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Randy in 1961 at the age of six years.
Survivors include his wife Helen of Denison; five sons: Robert and his wife Nancy of Manilla and their children, Nicholas, Nathan, Roger, Reanne aned [sic] Rose; Ron and his wife, Carol of Arion and their children, Jason, Jermey [sic] and Jennifer; Russell of Denison and his children, Michael and Allen of Dunlap, and Kayla of Denison; Richard of Dow City and his children, Amanda and Amber of Denison; and Ross of Dow City and his daughter, Rachael of Dow City. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 26, 1991 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison with Rev. Larry Lemke conducting the services an [sic] grave side rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Organ and vocal music were provided by Suzie Swarthout singing "How Great Thou Art" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus." Honorary pallbearers were Nicholas Beermann, Michael Beermann, Jeremy Beermann, Alan Beermann, Health [sic] Malone, Nathan Beermann, Jason Beermann, Roger Beermann, Craig Malone, and Chad Feser. Pallbearers were: Emerson Crampton, Chuck Ettleman, Vern Teck Jr., Jim Langenfeld, Clete Lickteig and Dale Wight.

Melvin F. Schultz (1915 - 2003)
Melvin F. Schultz was born July 15, 1915, the son of Ernest and Martha Rodewald Schultz. He died Friday, April 4, 2003 at the Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa at the age of eighty-seven.Melvin was born on a farm near Ricketts, Iowa, growing up there and receiving his education in a rural school near his home. He was baptized in Christ and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hanover Township, at the church his grandfather helped build. After completing his education, he was employed by various farmers in the area.
On April 28, 1937, Melvin was united in marriage to LaRue Brodersen at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. The couple were blessed with the birth of three children. He continued farming and rented farms south east and north west of Schleswig at various times. In 1945, he bought a farm north west of Schleswig where he remained until 1954 when he started a custom feed grinding service. In 1963, Melvin began the Feeders Supply Service and custom fertilizer business where he remained until retiring.
In his leisure time, Melvin enjoyed fishing and gardening, caring for both vegetables and flowers. He was a kind and considerate man who was devoted to his family. He was a good business man and was involved with the Schleswig community for many years. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Leo, and one sister, Matilda Nelson. Survivors include his wife of sixty-five years, LaRue of Denison; two sons, DeWayne and his wife, Denice of Danbury; Gary of Schleswig; and one daughter Connie Sheeley and her husband, Larry of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; and one sister, Melinda Meyer and her husband, Edwin of Chicago, Illinois.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, April 8, 2003 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Merle Mahnken officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "Nearer, My God, to Thee," "What a Friend We Have In Jesus" and "Beautiful Savior." Those serving as honorary pallbearers were: Orville Riessen, Ernie Riessen, Don Kline and Fred McKee. Pallbearers were: Darrell Brodersen, Kyle Brodersen, Damon Schultz, Aaron Schultz, Jason Schultz, Erick Sheeley and April Stender. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of arrangements.

Rose A. (Walde) Larson (1914 - 1999)
Rose A. Larson was born at Denison, Iowa March 11, 1914, the daughter of Paul and Marie Clausen Walde. She was raised in Denison being graduated from the Denison High School with the Class of 1931. Following high school and prior to her marriage she was employed doing secretarial work for various government agencies in Denison.On May 20, 1950, Rose was united in marriage with Wallace W. Larson at Omaha, Nebraska. Their union was blessed with one son, James. They made their home in Kiron, Iowa where they owned and operated Larson Electric for thirty-five years. They spent their retirement years in Kiron where in earlier years Rose had been an active member of the Evangelical Free Church and a volunteer for the church's activities. Following the closing of the Free Church she attended Kiron Baptist Church. In her spare time she enjoyed reading.
In January of 1996 Wallace and Rose moved to Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison. Wallace died March 9, 1996 and Rose continued to make Eventide her home.
Rose died Friday afternoon, April 2, 1999 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison having attained the age of 85 years and 21 days.
Including her parents and husband, Rose was preceded in death by three brothers, Max, Albert and William Walde and two sisters, Hattie Wulf and Minnie Moeller.
Those who remain to cherish her memory include her son, James Larson of Omaha, Nebraska, three grandchildren, Tess, Max and Jack Larson all of Omaha, one sister, Irene and her husband, Harold Smith of Carroll, Iowa, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Memorial services were held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 6, 1999 at the Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa with Pastor John Aiken officiating. Private interment was held prior to the services at the Kiron Cemetery at Kiron, Iowa. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Wilbur V. Lamp (1918 - 1993)
Wilbur, son of Edward and Laura Friedrichsen Lamp, was born Feb. 9, 1918, in Crawford County, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church near Kiron. As a youth he attended rural schools.On June 15, 1941, Wilbur was united in marriage with Phyllis Pieper at Vail. They worked on a farm for Loren Hockett for five years before starting to farm on their own in Ewoldt Township. After 35 years on the same farm they moved into their home at 61 Ann Street in Manning. During his retirement years, Wilbur and his wife cared for the Manning City Park.
Wilbur was very active as a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Manning, serving as usher and elder for many years, and as president of the congregation at one time. He was an honorary member of the Hayes Township Schuetzen Verein. In his spare time, Wilbur enjoyed fishing and trapping and refinishing antique trunks.
Wilbur was diagnosed with cancer in April of 1993, and was in failing health until the time of his death on Saturday, Nov. 6, 1993, at his home in Manning. He was 75 years, eight months and 28 days of age.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Arnold and Clifford Lamp. Survivors include his wife, Phyllis of Manning; his children: Gordell Lamp and his wife, Valda of Manning, Mahlon Lamp and his wife, Jane of Atlantic, and Jean and her husband, Rudy Roe of Des Moines; 10 grandchildren; three sisters, Deloris Sonnichsen of Denison, Marian and her husband, Bill Nicholson of Denver, Colo., and Norma and her husband, Rick Blanchette of Clifton, Colo.; a brother, Harvey Lamp and his wife, LaRoyce of Denison; aunts, an uncle, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 8 at 2 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning with Pastor Robert Riggert officiating. Fern Jensen, organist, accompanied the congregational hymns, "O God of Mercy, God of Light," "Drawn to the Cross" and "Beautiful Savior." Interment was in the Manning City Cemetery at Manning. Pallbearers included: Tom Sporrer, Myron Bogatzke, Harold Ruhde, Glen Kusel, Curtis Grimm and Larry Schultes. The Ohde Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.

Merlin John Schoening (1918 - 1989)
Funeral services for Merlin John Schoening, 70, were held Feb. 14th (1989)at Our Savior Lutheran Church at Norfolk, Neb. The Rev. Ronald Halling and Rev. Kristin Kincaid officiated. Burial was in New Lutheran Cemetery at Norfolk with military rites by American Legion Post 16 and Winter Munson Post 1644. Merlin died on Feb. 10 (1989) at Valley Lutheran Hospital in Mesa, Ariz., following a stroke.He was born Nov. 14, 1918, at Buck Grove, Ia., to Paul and Elsie Rath Schoening and was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He graduated from Primghar High School and the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. During World War II he entered the U.S. Army in September 1941, and served as warrant officer until his discharge on Jan. 6, 1946.
On Dec. 22, 1946, Merlin was united in marriage to Melva Irene Kime. This union was blessed with three daughters and one son. They moved to Norfolk in June 1946, and he became a certified public accountant. He retired in 1984.
Surviving are his wife, Melva; daughters: Judy and her husband, Tom Eans of Heber Springs, Ark., Lynda and her husband, David Uher of Norfolk and Janine and husband, Bob Cook of Norfolk; son David of Fort Worth, Texas; four grandchildren; his mother, Mrs. Elsie Schoening of Norfolk; and one Sister, Maxine and her husband, Robert Wyant of Sioux Falls, S.D. He was preceded in death by his father, Paul, and one brother Vernon.

Roy Jensen (1910 - 1989)
Roy Jensen was born April 6, 1910, on a farm northwest of Schleswig in Crawford County, Iowa. Roy was the son of John and Katie Krieger Jensen. He died November 14, 1989 at his home in Schleswig, at the age of 79 years. Roy grew up on the family farm and attended rural school.On December 9, 1931, Roy and Lillian Lafrentz of Schleswig were united in marriage at Elk Point, South Dakota. To this union two daughters were born: Lois and Linda. They farmed until 1968, at which time they retired and moved to Schleswig. Roy and Lillian were privileged to celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary in December of 1981. Roy was a long time member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Lillian, two daughters, Lois and her husband Richard Pickel of Schleswig and Linda Dirks of Cedar Rapids. Also surviving are five grandchildren: Rick Pickel of Denison, Lori and her husband Gene Kragel of Ute; Lashelle and her husband, Lloyd Carlson, Jr. of Des Moines; Scott Bielenberg and his wife Glenda of Schleswig; Christie Bielenberg of Longmont, Colorado; two great-grandchildren and one sister, Helen Johannsen of Schleswig.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, November 17, 1989 at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. Rev. Harold E. Schaible officiated at the services with interment in the Morgan Cemetery at Schleswig. Mrs. Dorothy Jessen was organist and Mrs. Rubie Kastner was soloist. Solo selections were "Amazing Grace" and "I'm Goin' Home." Serving as pallbearers were Scott Bielenberg, Lloyd Carlson, Jr., Oran Kuehl, Wayne Lafrentz, Murlin Johannsen and Gene Kragel.

Wilhelmina Bertha (Wellner) Schwingdorf (1916 - 1980)
Wilhelmina Bertha Schwingdorf was born July 6, 1916 near Ute, Iowa, the daughter of Herman and Anna Timm Wellner. She died Jan. 27, 1980 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, at the age of 63.Wilhelmina spent her early years on the family farm near Ute. As a youngster she moved with her family to a farm near Charter Oak. She received her education in the Ute and Charter Oak parochial schools.
On March 16, 1941, Wilhelmina was united in marriage to Earl Schwingdorf at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Soldier Township. They farmed near Charter Oak except for nine years when they farmed near Schleswig. Wilhelmina was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Charter Oak. She was baptized as an infant on July 28, 1916 in Ute and later confirmed on March 24, 1929 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Martin, one brother in infancy and one sister, Marie.
Survivors include her husband Earl of Charter Oak, one daughter, Bonnie, Mrs. Lawrence Meseck of Charter Oak and one son, Blaine of Charter Oak. Also by three grandchildren, Neal, Brenda and Leon; three brothers, Herman Wellner of Derby, Kan., August Wellner of Ute and Ernest Wellner of Killeen, Texas; five sisters, Helen, Mrs. Hubert Berens of Charter Oak, Ruth, Mrs. Ben Schmieder of Ute, Emma, Mrs. Gehart Langholdt of Charter Oak, Esther, Mrs. Robert Remmes also of Charter Oak and Dorothy, Mrs. Delbert Kroll of Mapleton.
Funeral services were held Jan. 29 at 1:30 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. Burial was in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery. The Rev. L.C. Gebhardt officiated at the services. Merlin Overhue (1919 - 1998)
Merlin Overhue was born February 13, 1919, the son of Frank and Bertha Weber Overhue. He died on Wednesday, August 26, 1998 at the Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton at the age of seventy-nine.Merlin was born in Randolph, Nebraska on his grandparent's farm. He lived with his parents in Wall Lake, until 1932 when he moved to Dunlap. He received his education at the Wall Lake and Dow City Community Schools. After completing his education, Merlin moved to Charter Oak in 1942. In 1943, he entered the United States Air Force and was stationed at the Army Air Force Base in Texas. He received his honorable discharge in 1944 so that he could return home to help his ailing father.
On October 7, 1945, Merlin was united in marriage to Wardene Paulsen at the Soldier Lutheran Church. The couple helped out with the family farming, until the death of Merlin's father, at which time they purchased the family farm, eight miles west of Schleswig. The couple farmed together until retiring in the late 1970's.
He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak American Legion and the Volunteer Soldiers Relief Board with Hugo Saggau and Charles Smith. Merlin was a very family oriented person who enjoyed his family coming home for visits. Farming his land was his life. In his leisure time, Merlin enjoyed playing cards, fishing and watching television.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one great-granddaughter in infancy, Kaylee Prine, two brothers, Frank Overhue and Darrell Overhue, two sisters, Eileen Kerns and Millicent Cowles.
Survivors include his wife, Wardene of Charter Oak; three sons, Alvin Overhue and his wife, Marjorie of Denison; Frank Overhue and his wife, Robi; Richard Overhue and his wife, Cindy, all of Glenwood; four daughters, Dorene Chamberlain and her husband, Wayne of Homer, Nebraska; Virgene Ryan and her husband, Jim of LeMars; Connie Overhue of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Darlene Overhue of Kansas City, Kansas; eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; one brother, Virgil Overhue and his wife, Marlis of Sioux City; two sisters, Verla Rothman and her husband Owen of Colorado Springs; Colorado; Marjorie Quartana of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Rudolph Meseck (1913 - 1994)
Rudolph Meseck was born June 17, 1913, the son of Otto and Sarah Krueger Meseck. He died Thursday, March 3, 1994 at the St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 86 years.Rudolph was born on a farm in Crawford County and was baptized in Christ as an infant on June 22, 1913 by Rev. Runge. He received his education at St. John's Lutheran School and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at the St. John Lutheran Church on Palm Sunday in 1927 by Rev. Amstein. After completing his formal education, he farmed with his family and later received his GED diploma in Mapleton. He subsequently attended WIT where he received his training as an electrician.
Rudolph was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and was active in the Lutheran Layman's League and the Lamplighters. He delivered Sunday morning service tapes to the shut-ins in the community and enjoyed passing the time visiting with them. He worked hard on the farm and enjoyed occupying his free time repairing electrical articles.
Rudolph was preceded in death by his parents, twin sisters, Lorena and Leona as children, one brother, Melvin as an infant and one brother-in-law Robert Eneboe.
Survivors include one brother, Art of Denison; two sisters, Gertrude Eneboe of Charter Oak and Evelyn Eneboe and her husband, Merle of Soldier; one niece, Susan Eneboe and three nephews, Randy, Rodney and Ricky Enebow; also six great nieces and nephews and many cousins and friends.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, 1994 at the St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, Iowa with Rev. L.C. Gebhardt and Vicar Timothy Kersten officiating the service and graveside rites held at the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery in Charter Oak. William F. Schneller (1914 - 1977)
William F. Schneller was born Aug. 25, 1914 at Milford Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the son of Joseph and Anna Schneller. He died Feb. 16, 1977 at Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison at the age of 62.William was raised, and educated in the Denison area. He was baptized at Zion Lutheran Church and was confirmed into the Lutheran faith during the eighth year of his education while attending the Lutheran School in Denison. His entire working career was devoted to farming his home place where he lived all his life.
On Sept. 3, 1944 he was united in marriage to Rose Mae Schneider at Zion Lutheran Church, Denison.
Survivors include, his wife Rose of Denison and eight children, Paul, Albert, Harold, Marcella, Marvin, Mary and Margaret, all at home Denison, and Robert of Denison. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services were held on Friday, Feb. 18, at 10:30 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Gary Hoffstetter officiating. Pallbearers included, Walter Jepsen, Kenneth Neumann, William Neumann, Donald Lilleholm, Lewis Poggensee and Arthur Lutz. Burial was in the Lutheran Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home, Denison.

Merlin Schroeder (1916 - 1996)
Merlin Schroeder was born at the family home near Manning, Iowa on February 8, 1916. He was the son of Johannes and Clara Schroeder. He was baptized on July 7, 1916, and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Zion Lutheran Church, Manning on March 29, 1931.He received his education at Hayes Township rural school. After completing his education, he assisted at the family farm and various farms in the area. In the fall of 1936, he moved to California and was employed as chef at various restaurants. He then was employed as a welder at the California shipyards until his induction into the army in December 1942, where he served in the Philippine Islands, South Pacific Theater.
On April 3, 1941, he was united in marriage to Ruth Lage. They were blessed with the birth of a daughter, Judith Ann. He was discharged from the army and returned home on January 25, 1946. The couple was engaged in farming on the family farm until January 1960, when they moved to Denison, Iowa. There he was employed as a welder at Savory's Welding Shop and then employed by Crawford County Maintenance Department until his retirement in 1978.
He was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, Denison, and a member of the Westside American Legion. Merlin was a devoted husband and father. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, bowling, outdoor sports and traveling. He especially enjoyed spending winters in Arizona for the past 10 years.
Merlin passed away July 12, 1996, in Phoenix, Arizona after a long illness. He is survived by his devoted wife, Ruth of Denison, Iowa; one daughter, Judith Ann Miller and her husband, Larry of Phoenix, Arizona; three grandchildren, Craig Miller of Phoenix, Timothy Miller and wife Shannon of Phoenix, Dawn Miller of Phoenix; one great-granddaughter, Andrea Miller; one brother, Wilbur Schroeder of Westside, Iowa; two sisters, Gertrude Christensen of Stanton, California; Phyllis Jans and husband Wayne of Westside, Iowa; also many nieces and nephews, plus a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Johannes and Clara Schroeder, one brother, Vernon and one sister, Bernice Justice.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 17, 1996 at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Dale D. Christiansen (1931 - 2001)
Dale D. Christiansen was born April 8,1931, the son of Henry and Adeline Wiese Christiansen. He died Monday, March 12, 2001 at the Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa at the age of sixty-nine.Dale was born on a farm near Vail, Iowa and was baptized in Christ at Stockholm Lutheran Church near Kiron. He was later confirmed at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig in 1946. He received his education in rural schools near his home in Crawford County and the Schleswig High School.
On February 18, 1951, Dale was united in marriage to Mildred (Millie) Hollister. In November 1951, Dale entered the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged in November of 1955. He returned to Crawford County, where the couple farmed in the Deloit area from 1956 until 1961. He then worked for various meat companies from 1962 through 1994. Dale retired in 1996 and went to work at Walmart in Council Bluffs and in Des Moines after moving there in 1998.
Dale was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Glenwood, Iowa. He was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed attending his children and later his grandchildren's school activities. Dale also enjoyed remodeling his home.
Dale was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Shirley. Survivors include his wife, Millie of Des Moines; two sons, Dana Christiansen and his wife, Barb of Urbandale; Daryn Christiansen and his wife, Kelly of Seattle, Washington; four grandsons, Zachary, Drew, Jacob and Gabriel; two brothers, Bonard Christiansen and his wife, Beverly of Schleswig; Melroy Christiansen and his wife, Betty of Boyer; two sisters, Phyllis Brotherson of Lake View; Beverly Hammer of Boone; many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 14, 2001 at the First United Methodist Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Chrisa Ferguson officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Nancy Miles provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Larry Boeck singing "What a Friend We Have in Jesus", "Amazing Grace" and "On Eagle's Wings". Honorary pallbearers were Mark Christiansen, Howard Brotherson and Robert Naylor. Those serving as pallbearers were: Steve Christiansen, Tammy Gustafson, Keith Brotherson, Leon Brotherson, LaDonna Miller and Eric Hammer. Military honors were American Legion Post No. 8, Denison, Iowa. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Methodist Women. Dana Jorgensen (1950 - 1992)
Dana, son of Allen Jorgen and Edeline Paulsen Jorgensen, was born May 3, 1950 at Denison, Iowa. The Jorgensen family made their home at Schleswig, Iowa where Dana attended school. He graduated with the Schleswig High School class of 1968. Dana furthered his education at Morningside College In Sioux City, graduating in 1972 with a bachelor of science degree, majoring in sociology with a minor in social work.On February 12 of that year Dana was united in marriage with Jeannie Schagt. Shortly after his marriage Dana attended National Guard basic training. He then lived in Minnesota, serving as intern nursing home administrator for Good Samaritan Nursing Homes. He became nursing home administrator in Arapahoe, NE and in 1976 moved to Manilla, Iowa where he was administrator of the Manilla Manor Nursing Home until 1989. Currently Dana was a student at the midwest campus of Buena Vista in Denison and also Des Moines Area Community College in Carroll.
Dana became seriously ill and was taken to Clarkson Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, later being transferred to the University of Utah Medical Center in Salt Lake City for treatment. He died there on Thursday, February 6, 1992 at the age of 41 years, 9 months and 3 days.
He was preceded in death by his father, Allen Jorgen Jorgensen. Survivors include his wife, Jeannie and their son, Christopher Jay of Manilla; his mother, Edeline Jorgensen of Schleswig; a brother, Kent Jorgensen and his wife, Dixie of Clinton; his mother and father-in-law, LeRoy and Helen Schagt of Ida Grove; a brother-in-law, Ronnie Schagt and his wife Mary of Ida Grove; two step brothers-in-law: Burdelle Knudson and wife Darnelle and Marelle Knudson and his wife, Cheryl, all of Ida Grove, IA, aunts and uncles, great-aunts and uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
In his youth Dana was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, and his church continued to be an important part of his life. Dana was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla; he served Trinity as president of the congregation, as a member of the board of education, as Sunday School Teacher, and as a member and officer of the Lutheran Brotherhood.
Dana always did his best to help make his community a good place to live, an instinct that developed at an early age when he attended Boys State and through his experience as an Eagle Scout. Dana served as a member of the Iowa Community Betterment Association, the Manilla Chamber of Commerce, and the Lions Club. He was given the Friend of Education Award by the Manilla Community School, and the Iowa Governor's Award for Community Betterment. Dana was a friend of the elderly and always took time to listen to their concerns and give expert advice through his position as nursing home administrator. He was also a member of the Southwest District of the Iowa Healthcare Association.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 11, 1992 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla with Pastor Glenn Wiechmann officiating. Marian Joens was the organist with the music being "Jesus Savior Pilot Me", and "What A Friend We Have In Jesus". Interment was at Morgan Township cemetery in Schleswig. Casket bearers were Art Joens, Mike Segebart, Mark Grundmeier, Mark Segebart, Gene Mahnke and Roland Huebner. The family of Dana Allen Jorgensen invited their friends and family to join them for lunch and fellowship following the funeral service.

Darwin A. Petersen (1927 - 1989)
Darwin A. Petersen was born in Denison, Ia., on Dec. 20, 1927, the son of Arnold and Alice Lochmiller Petersen. He died at his home in Lakewood, Calif., on April 28, 1989, after a year-long battle with lung cancer.Darwin joined the Navy in 1944, at the age of 17, serving until he retired in 1964. He settled in Lakewood, Calif., and was employed with General Telephone Co. from which he retired in 1984. Embarking on his third career, he opened his own insurance agency.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn (Williamson) ; sons, Dennis and Scott; daughter and son-in-law, Shawn (Hassett) and Michael Gasper; five grandchildren; three brothers and three sisters.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister. Local resident survivors include his aunt, Celia Hassett and his uncle, Arthur Petersen.
Services were held May 9, at St. John Lutheran Church in Cerritos, Calif. Interment was in Riverside National Cemetery with full military honors.

David Eugene Littleton (1944 - 1996)
David Eugene Littleton was born February 7, 1944, the son of Rex and Irene Andresen Littleton. He died on Saturday, March 16, 1996 at his home near Denison, Iowa at the age of fifty-two.David was born in Denison, Iowa and received his education at the Denison Community Schools, graduating with the class of 1962 and the Universal Trade School in Omaha. After receiving his education, he was employed at the Denison Auto Company and various auto repair shops in Denison.
On November 6, 1976, David was united in marriage to Diana Lillehom at the Methodist Church in Denison, where the couple settled with their two daughters. The couple lived in Massena, Iowa from 1977 until September of 1980, when they returned to Denison and David started the Easy Street Repair Shop.
He was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison, the Silver Spurs Riding Association and was the superintendent of the 4-H Horse Division Show at the Crawford County Fair. He was a loving husband and caring father and was known as Uncle Buck by his nieces and nephews. David enjoyed drawing, hunting, fishing and stock car racing. He also loved western movies, books and working around the house.
Survivors include his wife, Diana of Denison; two daughters, Tricia Littleton of Omaha, Nebraska; Debra Littleton of Sioux City, his parents, Rex and Irene Littleton of Denison; two brothers, Dennis Littleton and his wife, Maiy Ann of Woodstock, Illinois and Donald Littleton and his wife, Jo of Denison; one sister, Deanna McCullough and her husband, Tom of Vail and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, March 20, 1996 at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Chinch in Denison, Iowa. Fr. Andrew Hoffmann served as Celebrant with interment at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Jean Cornelius provided the organ accompaniment for the St. Rose of Lima Church Choir. Serving as Lector was Lonnie Popp; Altar Servers were: Sara Magnuson, Justin Magnuson and Thomas McCullough. Honorary Pallbearers: Sam Christiansen, Garry Bandenhull, Robert Schneller and Val Hennings. Pallbearers were: David McCollough, Ryan Sonnichsen, Terry Gallentine, Joe Schumacher, Delbert Sachau and Ronnie Beam. A Parish Wake Service was held at 8 p.m., Tuesday, March 19, 1996 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them for fellowship and lunch at the Parish Center, served by the Ladies Guild. Delmer Lee Clausen (1935 - 2006)
Delmer Lee Clausen was born April 24, 1935, the son of Herbert and Sylvia Janssen Clausen. He died Wednesday, December 13, 2006, at the Midland Medical Center in Papillion, Nebraska, at the age of seventy-one.Delmer was born in Schleswig, Iowa, and was baptized in Christ on June 30, 1935, and confirmed on April 2, 1950, at Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Church in Schleswig. He received his elementary education in a rural school near his home in Soldier Township.
On December 25, 1954, he was united in marriage to Lois Kuhlmann at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Ricketts, Iowa. The couple was blessed with the birth of three children.
For many years Delmer was a dedicated farmer, working first with his father and later in a partnership with his brother Verdell, feeding cattle, hogs and crop farming. Delmer owned and operated the Ricketts Oil and Feed. Prior to retiring in 1999 he worked for Teut's Oil Company in Schleswig, Iowa. Up until his death, he was doing a courier service for Bank Iowa.
Delmer was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church where he served as an elder and held various other church offices. He belonged to the Ricketts Community Club. Delmer loved driving and touring the country side. Among some of his favorite stops would include various events such as the Steam and Antique shows, the Tulip Festival in Orange City and numerous parades. He enjoyed bowling and socializing over coffee, and no one was a stranger to him. He was also very proud and talked often of his two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Lois in 1988, infant daughter Tori Lynn; his parents, Herbert and Sylvia; one brother, Verdell; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Bill and Marie Kuhlmann; sister-in-law, Marj Clausen.
He is survived by his son, Kevin of Ricketts, Iowa, daughter, Kelly McCaw, and her husband, Jerry, of Bellevue, Nebraska; two grandchildren: Brett and Christa McCaw; one brother, Ronald Clausen, of Schleswig; sisters-in-law, Kathryn Clausen, of Schleswig, Donna Berka, of Humboldt, Iowa, Betty and her husband Ron Mefferd of Gilbert, Arizona, Carol Schiltz, of Humboldt, Iowa, Lynn and her husband, Morris Holcomb, of Bellevue, Nebraska; brothers-in-law: Norman Kuhlmann and his wife, Lorraine, of Portland, Oregon; Wayne Kuhlmann, and his wife, Wonne, of Ricketts, Darrell Kuhlmann of Des Moines, Iowa; Dennis Kuhlmann and his wife Kathy, of Hastings, Nebraska; Tom Kuhlmann and his wife, Ruth, of Beaver, Pennsylvania; and many nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held for Delmer at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 16, 2006 at the St. Luke Lutheran Church in Ricketts, Iowa. Reverend Eugene Ernst officiated the service and grave side rites. Burial was at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig, Iowa. Marlene Lee was the organist and provided the organ accompaniment for the congregation hymns, How Great Thou Art," "Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound," and "The Family of God." Honorary pallbearers were Christa McCaw and Brett McCaw. Pallbearers were Richard Spiegel, Mark Spiegel, Chuck Daniels, Jerry McCaw, Lowell Tuet, and Paul Briggle. The family invited everyone to return to the church after the committal service for a luncheon served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak, Iowa was in charge of arrangements.

Dennis Plagge (1950 - 2003)
Dennis "Butch" Plagge was bom February 18, 1950, the son of William and Mildred Vogt Plagge. He died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa, Monday February 17, 2003 at the age of fifty-two years, eleven months and twenty-nine days.Butch was born in Denison, where he grew up receiving his education in the Zion Lutheran School. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at the Zion Lutheran Church. After completing his education, he farmed in the area until moving to the home farm in 1965 where he raised dairy cattle until 1983. In the mid-1980's, he began operations in commercial pig feeding and currently fed hogs for Prestage-Stoecker Farms. In 2000, Butch began the Plagge Custom Manure Pumping operation and continued feeding pigs.
On June 6. 1970, Butch was united in marriage to Patricia Carstensen at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. The couple settled on the Plagge home farm south of Denison and were blessed with three children. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who worked hard to provide for his family and ensure their happiness. In his leisure time. Butch always made time to go hunting. He especially enjoyed coyote and turkey hunting, but also enjoyed deer hunting. Fishing, camping and trips to the ocean with his family and friends were also special events he enjoyed. He enjoyed his grandchildren and looked forward to spending time with them on the farm or hunting. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.
Butch was preceded in death by his father, William; one brother, Louis. Survivors include his wife, Pat of Denison; two daughters, Brenda Hollingsworth and her husband, Dan of Jefferson City, Missouri; Barbara Plagge and her fiance Mike Krajicek Jr. of Denison; one son, Brian of Denison; three grandchildren, Brooke and Paige Hollingsworth and Brent Krajicek; his mother, Mildred of Denison; and three sisters, Delores Riley and her husband Richard of Everly, Iowa; Lois Hansen of Fonda, Iowa; Doris Bartholomew and her husband, Jim of Storm Lake, Iowa; one sister-in-law Joan Plagge of Denison; many nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, February 24, 2003 at Zion Lutneran cnurch in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. David Sewing officiated the service and grave side rites held at Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison, Iowa. Derald E. Evers (1935 - 2001)
Derald E. Evers was born at Denison, Iowa, October 25, 1935, the son of Edward Johann and Hertha Adele Maria Thomsen Evers. He was received into God's Kingdom of Grace through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison April 24, 1936 and confirmed in his Christian Faith there April 2, 1950. He was raised on the family farm west of Denison and was graduated from the Denison High School with the Class of 1953. Following high school he fanned with his father.On May 1, 1966, Derald was united in marriage with Patricia Behrendsen at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton, Iowa. Their union was blessed with two daughters, Karen and Sharon.
They made their home briefly in Schleswig before moving to a farm near the home place where, in conjunction with farming, Derald was employed at the Jo-Mart Steak House in Denison for two years. They later moved to the Evers' family farm where he farmed all of his life. When his health permitted Derald enjoyed many things including attending auctions and sales where he collected chickens and roosters for Pat, visiting with neighbors, playing cards with family and friends, fishing and tinkering outside.
In September of 1998 Derald suffered a severe stroke and entered Immanuel Lutheran Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska. From that time on he spent time there, various care facilities in the Omaha area and at home before entering the Dunlap Nursing and Rehab Center in Dunlap, Iowa on August 17, 1999. It was there that his death occurred Friday evening, April 13, 2001. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 65 years, 5 months and 18 days.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Including his parents, Derald was preceded in death by one daughter, Sharon Kay Evers, October 1, 1979.
Those who remain to cherish his memory include his wife, Patricia of Denison, daughter, Karen Evers of Denison, three sisters, Darlene Vogt of Charter Oak, Iowa, Norma and husband, Alfred Schoenfeld of Schleswig and Ardell and husband, Henry Ewoldt of Kiron, Iowa, Father-in-law, Charles Behrendsen of Mapleton, Iowa, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, April 17, 2001 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison with the Rev. Kurt R. Kaiser and the Rev. David M. Sewing officiating. Music for the service included the congregation singing "Jesus Lives!", "The Victory's Won", "Rock Of Ages, Cleft For Me" and "I Know That My Redeemer Lives" with Karen Kahl serving as organist. Casket bearers were Clark Martens, H. Dennis Bergstadt, Delaine Listamann, Roger Reimers, Ron Reimers and Dan Grill. Interment was at Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Donald Ray Bilsten (1932 - 2000)
Donald Ray Bilsten was born March 3,1932, the son of Harvey and Anna Johnson Bilsten. He died Friday, June 30, 2000 at his home in Denison, Iowa at the age of sixty-eight.Don was born on a farm in Crawford County, Kiron, Iowa. He was baptized on January 10, 1943 at the Kiron Baptist Church and later confirmed on December 29, 1957 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. He received his education at the Kiron Community School, graduating with the class of 1949. After completing his education, Don entered the United States Navy on April 7, 1950 and attained the rank of Gunner's Mate 3rd Class. Awards and honors he received were National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal and two stars. He received his honorable discharge January 22, 1954.
On August 3, 1958, Don was united in marriage to Betty Louise Petersen at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. The couple settled in Denison and were blessed with the birth of three children. For most of his life, Don did construction and concrete work with his brother, Max.
Don was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Denison, Denison American Legion and V.F.W. and the Disabled American Veterans. He was a very loving and caring husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and reading. Don also enjoyed socializing in a game of cards.
Don was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Helen Shives. Survivors include his wife, Betty of Denison; three sons, Tom Bilsten and his wife, Peggy of Phoenix, Arizona; Bruce Bilsten and his fiancee, Colleen of Olathe, Kansas; John Bilsten of Algona; three grandchildren; one brother, Max Bilsten and his wife, Marie of Denison; one sister, Ramona Koster and her husband, Vince of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; one brother-in-law, Barney Shives of Papillion, Nebraska; other relatives and many friends.

Donald John Ullrich (1931 - 2000)
Donald John Ullrich was born January 11, 1931, the son of William and Alva Bielfeldt Ullrich. He died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa on Friday, March 17, 2000 at the age of sixty-nine.Don was born in Hanover Township, Denison, Iowa and received his education in Hanover Number 1 School, near his home. He was baptized in Christ in January 1931 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa by Rev. Frese and later confirmed at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig on March 25, 1945.
On July 13, 1951, Don was united in marriage to Ramona Waldemar. The couple made their home in Schleswig for one year, before moving to a farm north of Kiron. They were blessed with the birth of three sons. Besides farming, Don also sold real estate and was a hail adjuster for many years.
Don was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig and enjoyed socializing. He was always quick to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers in infancy, Robert and Eugene and one sister, Lois.
Survivors include three sons, Kyle Ullrich and his wife, Stephanie; Dudley Ullrich and his wife, Rebecca, all of Kiron; Jeff Ullrich and his wife, Terri of Denison; a special friend, Reva Swaters of Denison; ten grandchildren, Heidi, Chris and his wife, Wendy, Holly, Hope, Adam, Levi, Sara, Drew, Danielle, and Alicia; four greatgrandchildren, Shelby, Hillary, Abbi and Bailey; two sisters, Lorraine Gierstorf of Schleswig; Helen Hanan and her husband, Jack of Pompano Beach, Florida; two brothers, Delbert Ullrich and his wife, Betty of Dakota Dunes, South Dakota; William Ullrich and his wife, Elizabeth of Ida Grove; other relatives and friends.

Donald William Bockelmann (1950 - 2001)
Donald William Bockelmann was born November 3, 1950, the son of LuVerne and Opal Kahler Bockelmann. He died at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota, Monday, October 8, 2001 at the age of fifty.Don was born in Denison where he grew up, attending the Denison schools and graduating from the Denison Community High School with the class of 1969.
On October 3, 1970, Don was united in marriage to Susan Juhl at the United Church of Rogers Park in Chicago, Illinois, and was blessed with the birth of two children. The couple settled in Council Bluffs, Iowa for a time, while Don worked for Safeway Foods. He then transferred to Denison, remaining in Denison until the fall of 1972 when the family returned to Council Bluffs.
In 1975, Don transferred to the Safeway in Fort Dodge as Produce Manager, being promoted to store manager in 1980. After Safeway Foods closed, he attended Iowa Central College in Fort Dodge, graduating in 1983 with an Associates degree in Computer Science and Accounting. He subsequently worked as a computer programmer for Schnurr and Company in Fort Dodge and later, as an Information Technologies Administrator for the Green Field Transportation Co., Inc. also in Fort Dodge.
In 1993, he graduated from Buena Vista College in Fort Dodge with a Bachelors Degree in Accounting. In 1998, he began working for the Hirschbach Motor Lines, Inc. in South Sioux City, Nebraska as a Financial Controller.
He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who cared for his family with deep interest. In his leisure time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, bicycling and gardening, and was an ISU Extension Master Gardener. He was a pilot, and enjoyed flying and riding his BMW motorcycle. He was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church, LeMars, the Elks Lodge and the Optimists Club both in Fort Dodge; and the National Rifle Association.
Don was preceded in death by his father, LuVerne and brother-in-law, Roger A. Juhl. Survivors include his wife, Susan of LeMars, one son, Donald Jr. and his wife, Jennifer of Anke-ny, Iowa; one daughter, Nicole Gottschalk and her husband, James of Fort Dodge; one granddaughter, Caitlyn; his mother, Opal Bockelmann of Denison; two brothers, Ronald of Altoona, Iowa; and David of Dow City and his fiancee, Donna Shriver of Gowrie, Iowa; his parents-in-law, Daniel R. and Elinor Juhl of Manilla; and one brother-in-law and four sisters-in-law, numerous other relatives and friends.

Donna M. (Lehmann) Groth (1931 - 1994)
Donna M. Groth was born July 6, 1931, the daughter of Ernest and Emma Grell Lehmann. She died at the Clarkson Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska on Tuesday, February 1, 1994 at the age of 62 years, six months and 26 days.Donna was born on a farm near Denison and was baptized August 2, 1931 by Rev. William Frese and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith by Rev. C.W. Schmidt on March 25, 1945 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. She began her elementary education at Zion Lutheran School in Denison and continued her education at the Schleswig Community High School, graduating there with the class of 1949.
On February 19, 1950, Donna was united in marriage to Wilbert Groth. The couple settled on a farm southeast of Schleswig where they were blessed with the birth of four children.
Donna was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed the time she spent with her family. She- enjoyed baking, embroidery, bowling and socializing with her family and friends in a game of cards. She was devoted to her Lord and Savior as evidenced by her efforts in the church having taught Sunday School and working with the Vacation Bible School. She has been a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig since 1945.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Dorthy Lehmann. Survivors include: her husband, Wilbert; two sons, Roger and his wife, Terry of Denison; Russell and his wife, Kathy of Columbia, South Carolina; two daughters, Diane Graeve and her husband, Marvin of Dneison; and Debra Hanigan of Cedar Rapids and her fiance, John Crowley of St. Louis, Missouri. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and one brother, Dale Lehmann and his wife, Dolores of St. Charles Missouri.
Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday February 4, 1994 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa with Rev. Donald Wagner officiating the service and graveside rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Angie Lehmann singing "How Great Thou Art" and "I'm But a Stranger Here" and congregational hymn "Nearer, My God, to Thee". Pallbearers were: Doug Lehmann, David Lehmann, Dennis Pirwitz, Galyn Moeller, Bryce Meeves, Dale Meiners, Larry Jensen and Keith Groth. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them for lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of arrangements.

Duane Harold Malone (1937 - 1993)
Duane Harold Malone was born on December 5, 1937, the son of Tom and Bertha Frazier Malone He died on Saturday, September 4, 1993 at the Manning General Hospital in Manning, Iowa at the age of fifty-five years.Duane was born on a farm in Harrison county, near Dunlap where he lived with his parents He was baptized a Christian in the Arion Congregational Church and received his early education in the Arion and Dow City School. After completing his education, he helped his father on the family farm.
On June 1, 1959, Duane was united in marriage to Mildred Evans in Dow City, Iowa. The couple settled on a farm near Dow City and Were blessed with the birth of three sons.
He was a loving and caring husband, father, and grandfather who devoted his life to his family. He was very proud of his purebred Angus cows and calves that he raised and was a past member of the Arion Saddle Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Bertha, four brothers, Sam, Fred, Norman and Jerry.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred of Dow City; three sons, James Malone of Dow City; Ted Malone and his wife, Sandi of Dow City; and Glenn Malone and his wife Anette of Dow City; eight grandchildren; three brothers, Max Malone and his wife, Clara Mae of Dow City; Benny Malone and his wife, Jean of Dow City; Ivan Malone and his wife, Edna of Dow City; and two sisters, Vivian Montange and her husband, Bernard "Bud" of Woodbine and Opal Bramley and her husband Raymond of Ute.
Funeral services were held at 10 A.M., Tuesday, September 7, 1993 at the United Methodist Church in Dow City, Iowa. Rev. Richard Russell officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Dow city Cemetery in Dow City. Jeanette Kuhlman provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Sheila Sliefert singing 'How Great Thou Art' and "In the Garden'. Honorary Pallbearers were Kimberly Segebart, Robert Segebart, Edward Malone, Jessica Malone, Justin Malone, David Malone, Dillon Malone and Cody Malone. Edith Pauline (Wingrove) Schneider (1934 - 1991)
Edith Pauline Schneider was born Dec. 28, 1934, the daughter of Paul and Josie Wight Wingrove. She died March 26, 1991 at the Jennie Edmundson Memorial Hospital in Council Bluffs, Ia. at the age of 56 years.Edith was born on a farm south of Dow City, Iowa, where she grew up. She began her education in the Dow City Community School system and continued her education in Denison, graduating from the Denison Community High School.
She was united in marriage to Herman Schneider Dec. 5, 1954 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison by the Rev. C.W. Schmidt. The couple made their home on a farm in Milford Twp. in Crawford County and were blessed with the birth of four children. In October of 1990, Edith and Herman moved to Deloit.
Edith was a devoted wife and loving mother who enjoyed the time she spent with her family. In her spare time, she enjoyed crocheting, fishing, reading and listening to music. Other times were spent caring for her vegetable garden and socializing with her family and friends. Her memberships included Faith Lutheran Church in Deloit, their Ladies Aid and the American Legion Auxiliary of Deloit.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, Archie Lowell in infancy and Robert.
Survivors include her husband, Herman of Deloit; four children, Marian Schuett and her husband, Randy of Deloit, Roland Schneider of Denison, LaVon Betterton and her fiance, Rick Siemer of Denison, and Jean Schneider of Cherokee; four grandchildren, Jennifer Betterton, Linnae Schuett, Joshua Betterton, and Mark Schuett; and three step-grandchildren, Heidi Schuett, Cory Schuett and Christopher Schuett; one brother, Jay Wingrove and his wife, Erma of Charter Oak and one sister, Marilin Crane and her husband, William of Vail.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 29, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, with Pastors Kurt Kaiser and Philip Bloch officiating the service. Karen Kahl served as organ accompanist to Henry Henningsen's solo arrangements of "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Nearer, My God, To Thee" with congregational singing of "What a Friend We Have in Jesus." A prayer service offered by Royl Roden was given at 8 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home. Serving as honorary pallbearers were Clifford J. Kelley, Vincent Argotsinger, Dan Mefferd Jr., Vincent Keating, Cyrenus Knief and Royl Roden. Pallbearers were Robert Schneller, Duane Schneider, Albert Schneller, Harry Riessen, Brian Riessen, and Joe Crane. Graveside rites were given at the Deloit Cemetery in Deloit, Iowa. Walter A. Edward Michael Lyon (1944 - 2006)
Edward "Mike" Lyon, 61, of Mapleton. Iowa died Monday, May 1, 2006 at his home in Mapleton following' eight years of prostate cancer and its complications.The Funeral Service for Mike was held Thursday, May 4 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton with Rev. Dr. Scott Fiege officiating. Burial was in Mt. Hope Cemetery at Mapleton. Norma Jean Dose was the organist and Georgine Wessell was the vocalist. Visitation was Wednesday, May 3 after 2:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 6:30 p.m. all at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.
Edward Michael Lyon was born May 30, 1944, to Robert Bayard Lyon and Marie (O'Meara) Lyon in Ida Grove, Iowa. He moved with his family to Schleswig, Iowa where he graduated from Schleswig High School with the class of 1962. He served his country in the Iowa National Guard. He was united in marriage to Barbara Glau May 24, 1964 in Schleswig.
Mike was a long time publisher, having been involved in the newspaper business for over 40 years. He and his wife, Barb, published the Mapleton Press, the Schleswig Leader and the Charter Oak-Ute NEWSpaper until February of 2006. He and his wife also owned and operated Lyon Photography, with a focus on wedding photography, for over 10 years. They also owned the Ink Spot, a screen printing and embroidery business until 2006.
In 1985, Mike saw the potential of using a laser writer to replace compugraphic equipment in the publishing of newspapers. He was the first in the nation to start a desk top publishing system. He sold systems in Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota and Minnesota and also consulted with publishers in many other states.
Mike received numerous awards over the years for his newspaper skills, some including the Master Editor Publishers Award, the Iowa Newspaper Association's highest honor, the INA's Distinguished Service Award, the INA's first "Friend of Iowa' Newspaper Award, and the Iowa High School Athletic Association's News Media Award. He was president of the Interstate Newspaper Association in 1984 and a member of the Iowa Newspaper Association Board for nine years serving as president and on numerous INA committees.
In the Mapleton community, Mike was a very active citizen. He was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, a member of the Mapleton Club where he served on their board and as president, helped start a Jaycee Chapter in Mapleton, served on the Mapleton Fire Department and was one of the founders and president of the Maple Valley Development Corporation. He was instrumental in bringing the Maple Valley Medical Clinic to Mapleton. For his civic contributions to Mapleton, Mike was awarded the Mapleton Outstanding Citizen Award and the Mapleton Rotary Club's Service Above Self Award, both in 2005.
Mike had a great love of the Loess Hills and the State of Iowa. Since his diagnosis of cancer, he spent as much time as he could photographing the hills, country churches and rural scenery. His photos can be found in the June E. Nylen Cancer Center. Maple Heights Nursing Home, and Mapleton City Hall, as well as in the homes of his many friends. He also published a book of his country churches along with poetry by his good friend, Georgine Wessell
Mike is survived by his wife and best friend of 41 years, Barb; two daughters, Rebecca Lyon of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Patricia Barnard and her husband. Mark, of Hugo, Minnesota; one red haired grandson, Damion Scobie of Hugo, Minnesota; one brother, Doug Lyon and his wife, Dee, of Schleswig, Iowa; one sister, Sandy Rickert and her husband, Phil, of Santa Fe, New Mexico; his mother-in-law, Marcella Glau of Mapleton; plus other family members; and many friends and associates in the tri-state area.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bob and Marie (O'Meara) Lyon and his grandparents.
Honorary pallbearers were The Mapleton Fire Department and The Mapleton Press staff. Pallbearers were Tom McNamara, Bill Monroe, Ed Maier, Keith Robinson, Steve Oberg and Todd Sadler. Arrangements were made under the direction of the Armstrong Funeral Home of Mapleton.

Eldo Albert Paulsen (1928 - 2004)
Eldo Albert Paulsen was born on December 9, 1928, the son of Albert and Caroline Hansen Paulsen. He died Wednesday, November 3, 2004 at the Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, Iowa at the age of seventy-five.Eldo was born on the family farm in Morgan Township, Schleswig, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed in the Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Church in Schleswig. He attended country school and graduated from the Schleswig High School in 1946. Eldo continued his education at an auctioneer school in Sioux City and after completing his education he returned to Schleswig to farm.
On April 23, 1950, Eldo was united in marriage to Carol Bush at the Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Church in Schleswig. The couple settled on the family farm in Morgan Township near Schleswig and were blessed with the birth of three children.
Eldo enjoyed farming, raising Chester White Hogs, Black Angus Cattle, and raising and judging rabbits. He also took great pride in numerous carpentry projects, especially the building of their family home. His hobbies included bowling and tractor pulling. He spent many years working with the 4-H program and the Crawford County Pork Producers. Eldo was an active member of the United Church of Christ, serving on the church council for several years.
Along with his wife, Carol, Eldo was preceded in death by his parents, twin sisters, Vera and Veda Paulsen, his father-in-law, Ralph Bush and a brother-in-law, Duane Davis.
Survivors include his children, Karla Cose and her husband, Gordon of Denison; Bruce Paulsen and his wife, Cindi of Schleswig: Lynette Tiefenthaler and her husband, Steve of Holstein; ten grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren; one sister, Ardene Ballantine of Fort Myers, Florida; his mother-in-law, Grace Bush of Onawa; three sisters-in-law, Donna Ree Davis of Onawa; Bethel Lamb and her husband, Ronnie of Council Bluffs: Marcia Sangamino and her husband, Dominick of Bellevue, Nebraska; a special friend, Lois Jacobs of Schleswig; many other relatives and friends. Many memories of Eldo will remain in the hearts of his family and friends forever.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, November 8, 2004 at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Chris Burtnett officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Wendy Bumann provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Sharon Kruse singing "On Eagle's Wings" and congregational hymns "How Great Thou Art" and "Lift High the Cross". Those serving as honorary pallbearers were: Stephanie Erpelding, Valerie Tiefenthaler, Krista Tiefenthaler, Shannon Paulsen, Tiffany Paulsen, Jennifer Jordan, Tasha Monthei and Amy Paulsen. Elmer Chris Petersen (1920 - 2003)
Elmer Chris Petersen was born September 13, 1920, the son of Chris and Minnie Boger Petersen. He died Tuesday, November 4, 2003 at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa.Elmer was born on a farm in Hanover Township, near Denison. He was baptized in Christ on October 1, 1920 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and later confirmed there on April 5, 1936 by Rev. William Frese. He received his education in a rural school in Goodrich Township. After completing his education, Elmer helped his father on the family farm.
On January 3, 1942, Elmer was united in marriage to Lorna Hulsebus. They settled on a farm northwest of Denison for fifty-four years. Elmer also sold P.A.G. Seed Corn for many years. The couple were blessed with the birth of four children. In 1996, they moved to the Schleswig retirement apartments.
Lorna passed away on December 3, 2001 at Eventide and on December 24 Elmer suffered a stroke and moved to Eventide on January 8, 2002.
Elmer was a devoted life-long member of Zion Lutheran Church, where he served as an elder. He enjoyed playing cards with the guys in Schleswig. In earlier years, Elmer and Lorna enjoyed dancing and fishing. Elmer especially loved visits from his great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Lorna, infant daughter, Donna Loueen, one great-grandson, Tryston Lindberg, two brothers, Merlin and August and one sister, Ida Eggert Vogt.
Survivors include two sons, Virtus Petersen and his wife, Barbara of Denison; Dale Petersen and his wife, Jacalyn; one daughter, Virgene Fredericks and her husband, Richard, all of Schleswig; ten grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren; one brother, Louis Petersen and his wife, Lorna of Denison; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Hulsebus of Denison; Betty Petersen of Omaha, Nebraska; one brother-in-law, Gerald Hulsebus and his wife Mary of Denison; many other relatives and friends.
