Martha A. (Nordine) Winey (1912 - 1999)
Martha A. Winey was born on February 11, 1912 in Milford Twp., Crawford County, Iowa, the daughter of Lillie E. Flodine and Erik Gustaf Eriksson Nordine, and passed away on October 8, 1999, at the age of 87 years. Martha was the widow of Carlyle B. Winey, who preceded her in death on September 26th, a mere 12 days apart, and at which time they had been married 67 years.Martha's father died when she was six months old and her mother married Hjalmar Johnson. Her mother died when Martha was six years of age. Martha grew to womanhood living with her beloved step-grandmother, Mrs. Marie Johnson, widow of Charley, and her children, Frithluf (Frithjof), Frank, Linne, Chase and Hannah. Martha was known by her foster family name of Johnson until her marriage.
Martha attended rural schools and Deloit High School. Summer school classes at State Teachers College, Cedar Falls, provided her with a teaching certificate. She taught at Paradise Country School #4 for two years prior to her marriage, after which she was no longer allowed to teach due to a ruling that forbid married women to teach school.
Martha was united in marriage on November 14, 1931, to Carlyle B. 'Dugan' Winey. To this union was born two children, Carolyn and Charles. They made their home for many years in Deloit, Iowa. They moved to Denison in 1947 and this remained their home until November 1997 when they moved together to the Denison Care Center.
After moving to Denison, there was a shortage of teachers and Martha was practically drafted into the teaching field. She took night courses to renew her teaching certificate and taught at a rural school in Morgan Twp. for three years. She then taught Junior High classes in Kiron and Dow City while continuing her education at night and via correspondence classes. After spending five years at Ar-We-Va in Vail teaching fourth graders, she joined the Denison School system where she taught primary level in Kiron before moving to Denison to teach fourth grade. Martha earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa in 1950. After completing 30 years of teaching, she retired in 1975 at the age of 63. Martha felt teaching was "a most satisfying and rewarding profession."
Martha and her husband enjoyed a wide circle of friends who joined them in camping, outings, fishing, visiting and card playing. After retiring, she indulged herself in various hobbies including quilting, crocheting, Swedish weaving, embroidery, handicrafts, gardening and traveling with her husband exploring the United States while visiting friends and family and writing family genealogy. The last hobby turned into a real project, consuming 20 years of research on the Winey family, including trips to Pennsylvania from whence the Wineys came.
Her book of Wineys was published in 1990 to the delight of Wineys across the country. Her correspondence with family members continued until the time of her death. She continued researching the genealogy of her mother's and father's families. Martha was a member of the First Methodist Church, VFW Auxiliary, Legion Auxiliary, ISEA, NEA, ISTA, AARP, Retired Teachers Assoc., Crawford County Hospital Auxiliary, Coachmans' Assoc., Cutty's and Good Sam's Clubs.
Martha's greatest love was for her husband, Carlyle, and her beloved children, Carolyn and Charles. She especially enjoyed her 7 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Martha and Carlyle observed their 50th wedding anniversary in 1981 with a reception planned by their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
