William O. Krueger (1911 - 2000)
William O. was born September 22, 1911, on a farm near Wolsey, South Dakota, the son of William and Bertha Fahrnow Krueger. He died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa, Friday, January 14, 2000, at the age of eighty-eight.William was baptized in Wolsey, South Dakota and at the age of four, he moved with his family to Hanover Township, Crawford County, Iowa where they settled on a farm. He received his education in a rural school near his home, and helped his family with the farming duties. In 1925, William was confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Soldier Township, Charter Oak, Iowa.
At the age of twenty-four, William was united in marriage on July 14, 1935, to Amanda Reimer at St Paul's Lutheran Parsonage. The couple settled on the family farm and were blessed with the birth of three children. They farmed in Crawford County until retiring in 1973, when they moved to Denison. He subsequently worked as a security guard for Dubuque Packing and Farmland Industries until 1982. In 1998, William moved to the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison.
William was a loving and caring husband and father. In his leisure time, he enjoyed socializing with his family and friends at a game of cards and bowling. At other times, he enjoyed taking care of his yard, camping, and going on trips. He was devoted to his church and in earlier years, enjoyed singing in the church choir at St Paul's in Hanover Township. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and various local card clubs.
William was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Harold; one granddaughter, Darla Gray; one great-grandson, Michael Kessel; six sisters, Emma Dorale; Frieda Stier; Hulda Carstensen; Minnie Krueger; Bertha Meyer; Alma Nemitz; and one brother, Gustave Krueger.
Survivors include his wife, Amanda of Denison; one daughter, Marlene Church and friend, Mike Kaufman of Omaha; one son, Bob and his wife, Judy of Glenwood, Iowa; one daughter-in-law, Dorothy Krueger of Omaha; six grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren; and one sister, Clara Crouch living at the Manilla Manor and her husband, Harold of Irwin.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m., Monday, January 17, 2000 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Rev. Kurt Kaiser officiated the service and grave side rites held at Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Organist Karen Kahl provided the accompaniment for soloist Eldon Hardekopf as he sang "How Great Thou Art" and "I Was There to Hear Your Burning Cry" and for the congregational hymn, "Lift High the Cross". Those serving as pallbearers were: Don Krueger, Diane Krueger, Debra Ewing and Dave Kessel. The family invited everyone in attendance to return to the church and join them in fellowship and lunch served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

William H. Mumm (1918 - 1992)
William H. "Bill" Mumm was born Feb. 1, 1918 in Denison the son of Jacob and Christine Hendricksen Mumm. He attended Goodrich Center Country School in rural Crawford County.He married Irene B. Nefstead Salven on April 11, 1953 at St. John Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Bill worked as a meat cutter for Kingan and Company which later became Hygrade. He was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church and enjoyed gardening and card playing.
Bill, who was a resident of Storm Lake, died Sunday March 8, 1992 at the Buena Vista County Hospital following a brief illness.
Preceding him in death were his parents; a sister Inge; a brother Peter; a half-sister, Elizabeth Comstock and two half-brothers, Louis J. and Charles Segebart.
Survivors include his wife Irene; a step-daughter Janis and her husband James Chase of Alta; step-son Ronald Salven of Marion; three brothers, Jake and his wife Thelma of Sacramento, Calif., Carl and his wife Grace and Henry and his wife Joann all of Portland, Ore.,; two sisters, Anna Jensen of Denison and Helen and her husband Louis Schrock of Des Moines; a half-brother, John Segebart of Ida Grove; seven grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 11 at 2 p.m. at St. Mark's Lutheran Church with Reverend Victor Wenger officiating. Burial was in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Alta. The Hughes, Nelson, Fratzke Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

William L. Gehring (1915 - 1994)
William L. Gehring was born June 6, 1915, the son of Wilhelm G. and Hertha Schade Gehring. He died at the Clarkson Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska on Friday, March 25, 1994 at the age of 78 years.William was born on a farm near Dunlap, Iowa and received his education at Goodrich No. 3 near his home. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith as a youngster.
After completing his education, William farmed with his dad. On April 11, 1923, he was united in marriage to Leone Jochims at the Zion Lutheran parsonage in Denison by Rev. William Frese. The couple lived with his family until 1939 when they settled on a farm in Goodrich Township. They were blessed with the birth of two children.
In 1943, the family purchased a farm northwest of Denison where they remained until moving to town in 1983. In addition to farming, William did custom work for area farmers and worked for the ASCS office in Denison continuing his association with that office after retiring from the farm.
Since his retirement, William enjoyed working in his yard, reading and was a sports fan who had a particular fondness for baseball, and enjoyed socializing with family and friends at a game of cards. He was a loving and caring husband and father who devoted his life to his family. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and the Crawford County Farm Bureau.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Lucille; one brother, Victor and one grandson William in 1985. Survivors include: his wife, Leone of Denison, one daughter, Maxine Savery and her husband, S.K., and one son, William B. and his wife, Charlene all of Denison, three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; one brother, Louis and his wife, Darlene of Denison; and two sisters, Adele DeConnick and her husband, Joseph of Denison; and Arlene Sovinski of Suring, Wisconsin.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, March 28, 1994 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa with Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. Phillip E. Bloch officiating the service and graveside rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig, Iowa. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Henry Henningsen singing "How Great Thou Art" and "I'm But a Stranger Here" and congregational hymn "I Know That My Redeemer Lives". Pallbearers were: Edlef Jurgensen, Marlin Aschinger, Louis Petersen, Art Boettger, Roger Walde and Elmer Sahl. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them for lunch at the church, served by the Dorcas Society. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Verl G. Bartlett (1918 - 2002)
Verl G. Bartlett was born February 11, 1918, the son of William and Lena Bohnker Barlett. He died Sunday, December 29, 2002 at the Manilla Manor, Manilla, Iowa at the age of eighty-four.Verl was born near Vail, Iowa. He received his education in the Denison School District and served in the United States Navy during World War II in the South Pacific.
On October 5, 1940, Verl was united in marriage to Lois M. Skarin. The couple made their home in Denison, Iowa and were blessed with two children, Larry and John. Verl worked for Iowa Master Breeders Hatchery before going to work at the Denison Seed Company, where he worked for forty-three years and later purchased the business.
Verl was a loving husband and father who enjoyed having his grandchildren visit. He had a great love of sports and other hobbies including fishing, attending ball games, playing solitaire and was a golden glove boxing champion while serving in the Navy. Verl was a member of the United Methodist Church in Denison and the Denison American Legion and V.F.W.
Verl was preceded in death by his parents, William and Lena, two brothers, Raymond, and Floyd, one sister, Lucille and an infant brother.
Survivors include his wife, Lois of Denison; two sons, Larry and his wife, Gayle of Iowa City; John and his wife, Mary of Denison; five grandchildren, Julie Ornelas of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Beth Preul of Harlan; Kathleen Bartlett of Portland, Oregon; Brad Bartlett of Gainesville, Florida and Matt Bartlett of Tennessee; three great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Marie Hall and David Ornelas; three brothers, Clarence Bartlett of Kiron; Don Bartlett and his wife, Juanita of Denison; Ralph Bartlett of Denver, Colorado; several nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, December 31, 2002, at First United Methodist Church in Denison. Rev. Chrisa Ferguson officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Oakland Cemetery in Denison. Organist Nancy Miles provided the organ accompaniment for soloist Larry Boeck as he sang "How Great Thou Art", and "The Old Rugged Cross". Those serving as honorary pallbearers were: Harold Groen, Bob Lingle, Herschel Gabrielson, Hubert Lind and Bob Rath. Those serving as pallbearers were: Dean Ahrenholtz, John Boettger, Jeff Brus, Jeff Ahrenboltz, Terry Boettger, and Todd Brus. Military honors were provided by the American Legion Post No. 8 and the V.F.W. Post No. 2504 of Denison. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them for fellowship and lunch served by the Methodist Women. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Martin A. Krueger (1910 - 1986)
Martin A. Krueger was born near Wolsey, South Dakota, the son of Bernhard and Emelia Eichstadt Krueger. He died Thursday morning, February 27, 1986 at the Manning General Hospital in Manning, Iowa at the age of 75 years, five months and two days.Martin moved with his family to a farm near Charter Oak in 1914. He spent his childhood years in the Charter Oak area. He received his formal education at the Soldier Township School. He was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at the Immanuel Lutheran Church at Soldier Township.
Martin was united in marriage to Elsie Plotz on August 4, 1943 at the Zion Lutheran Parsonage by Rev. Carl W. Schmidt. Together they farmed in Crawford County for a number of years. In 1962 they moved to Kenwood where they purchased and they operated the Country Store. In 1980 they made their home in Charter Oak. Martin did part-time work as a carpenter for many years. He will also be remembered for his accordion playing abilities.
In addition to his parents, Martin was preceded in death by two brothers, Arthur and Adolph.
Survivors include his wife Elsie of Charter Oak, two sons, De Wayne of Dow City, and Dennis of Dennison, and two daughters, Mrs. Delaine Spreng of Sioux City and Mrs. Delores Peffer of Englewood, Colorado. He is further survived by ten grandchildren, his brothers Lester and Loren of Charter Oak, and Edward of Danbury, and his sister Helma, Mrs. Bill Ladwig of Denison, as well as other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 1, 1986 at 10:30 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Interment was in the St. Paul's Cemetery near Charter Oak. The Rev. Kurt Kaiser officiated at the services and graveside rites. Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist for the services with Mr. Henry Henningsen serving as soloist. Hymns for the services included Nearer My God To Thee and Rock of Ages. Serving as pallbearers for the services were Vernon Koeck, Wilbur Prussing, Mildred Nemitz, Henry Boettger, Clarence Denker, Wayne Kuhlmann. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Orville Thiedeman (1915 - 1999)
Orville Thiedeman was born November 11, 1915, the son of Julius and Anna Kruse Thiedeman. He died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa, Friday, August 20, 1999, at the age of eighty-three.Orville was born in Hayes Township, Westside, Iowa. After completing his education, he started farming at the age of fourteen. His father died in 1934, and Orville took over the farming operation.
On August 21, 1940, Orville was united in marriage to Verna Meyer from Westside. The couple were married in Rockport, Missouri, and made their home on a farm in Hayes Township. Orville remained on the farm until moving to Eventide Nursing Home in November of 1998.
Orville was a trustee of Hayes Township for fifty years and treasurer of the Hayes Cemetery and was involved with soil conservation, being one of the first in the region to start conservation practices. Orville was a caring father and grandfather. In addition to farming being his career and livelihood, he enjoyed it as a leisure activity. In his younger years, he enjoyed riding motorcycles and was a member of the Schutzen Verien of Hayes Township.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Gilbert and Harold, and his wife, Verna. Survivors include his son, Larry, and his wife, Jane, of Fayette, Missouri; and daughter, Joyce Neumann, and her husband, Kenneth, of Westside, Iowa; two grandchildren, Tamara Thiedeman of Kansas City, Missouri and Megan Thiedeman of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and one sister, Velma Meehan of Westside, Iowa.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., Monday, August 23, 1999 at the United Church in Westside, Iowa. Pastor Virginia Stiles officiated the service and grave side services held at the Westside Cemetery. Jean Ang provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "In the Garden" and "Just as I Am, Without One Plea". Those serving as pallbearers were: Dennis Backhaus, Rodney Backhaus, Gary Odendahl, Leon Schulte, Roger Leiting and Vince Leiting. Pauline E. (Custer) Jensen (1913 - 1989)
Pauline E. Jensen was born at Sioux City, IA., on Aug. 7, 1913, the daughter of Paul M. and Ethel I. Wands Custer. At the age of four, her family moved to a farm south and east of Moville, where she was raised. She received her education in the rural schools and the Moville High School. Following high school, Pauline attended and graduated from Cosmetology of Beauty Cultures in Sioux City. She came to Denison, Nov. 4, 1935, and was employed at Blossom's Beauty Shop.On June 9, 1936, Pauline was united in marriage with Walter J. Jensen at Denison. This union was blessed with three children, Donald "Butch", Roger and Paula. They made their home in Denison where Pauline continued her employment with Blossom until March 15, 1939, when she opened her own business, Pauline's Beauty Salon.
Walter died Feb. 14, 1973, and Pauline continued operating her shop until she retired in April of 1980. On May 1, 1980, she began employment at Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison where she was employed at the time of her death. Pauline suffered a stroke on April 7, and had been hospitalized since that time in Omaha, Neb., and Denison. Her death occurred Wednesday afternoon, May 24, 1989, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison. At the time of her death she had attained the age of 75 years, nine months and 17 days.
Pauline was baptized and joined the Ruston Avenue Methodist Church in Sioux City, later transferring her membership to the First United Methodist Church in Denison. For many years she served the Crawford County Chapter of the American Red Cross as coordinator and treasurer.
Including her parents and her husband, Walter; Pauline was preceded in death by one son, Roger Jensen, April 25, 1962; and two sisters, Aloyse McNaughton and Opal Boecher
Survivors include one son, Donald L. "Butch" Jensen and his wife, Sheryl of rural Denison; one daughter, Paula Jensen of Cedar Rapids; one granddaughter, Robin Jensen of Denison; one grandson, Shawn Jensen of Wayne, Neb.; and one great-granddaughter, Katie Jensen of Denison. Also surviving are nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 27, at the First United Methodist Church in Denison with Dr. Edward R. Peterson and the Rev. Douglas Swarthout officiating. Vocal selections included the congregation singing "Just As I Am" and JoAnne Magden singing, "Amazing Grace," "The Lord's Prayer," and "The Battle Hymn Of The Republic." Nancy Miles served as organist. Pallbearers were Clarence Friedrichsen, Neal Friedrichsen, Ross Friedrichsen, Dennis Bergstadt, Tom McGrane and Steven Speake. Interment was in the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Rex L. Littleton (1919 - 2003)
Rex L. Littleton was born May 9, 1919, the son of Frank and Pluma Slates Littleton. He died Tuesday, December 30, 2003, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa at the age of eighty-four.Rex was born near Harlan, Iowa and received his education in the Harlan Schools. When Rex was eight years old, he became very ill and was diagnosed with spinal meningitis. He amazed his doctors and overcame his illness. During his childhood, Rex enjoyed hunting with family and friends with their greyhound dogs and horses. As a young man, Rex met "the love of his life," Irene Andresen. While Rex and Irene were dating, he always escorted her to dances and the movies wearing a suit and tie.
On June 26, 1943, Rex and Irene were married at the First Lutheran Church in Omaha, Nebraska. The couple made their home in Denison and were blessed with the birth of four children.
He held several jobs throughout his life, including working at the Coca-Cola and Dr. Pepper Plants in Denison, driving a truck, and owning his own custom corn shelling business. Rex also worked on the construction of Farmland Foods, and also was employed there from 1962, until his retirement in 1981.
In his spare time, Rex enjoyed fishing, collecting John Deere tractors, and was an avid stock-car racing fan, having attended many races. He was also a childhood friend of NASCAR driver, Tiny Lund. Rex was a kind and gentle person, always ready to lend a hand with a smile. He was a friend to many and loved by all. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Denison.
Rex was preceded in death by his parents, one son, David B., one grandson, Dan P. Schroeder and one sister, Dorothy Munson. Survivors include his wife, Irene of Denison; two sons, Donald Littleton and his wife, Deb of Denison; Dennis Littleton of Crystal Lake, Illinois; one daughter, Deanna McCullough and her husband, Tom of Vail; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, January 3, 2004 at the First United Methodist Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Alberta Ervin officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Organist Nancy Miles provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Larry Boeck singing "Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound" and "How Great Thou Art". The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Methodist Women. Sadie L. (Peters) Hoffmeier (1910 - 1993)
Sadie L. Hoffmeier was born Feb. 26, 1910, the daughter of William and Rosa Bahnsen Peters. She died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison on Thursday, June 17, 1993 at the age of eighty-three years.Sadie was born on a farm near Charter Oak, Ia. And was baptized at the St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak in 1910. She received her education at St. John's Lutheran School and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith there on April 13, 1924.
After completing her education, she remained on the farm until she was united in marriage to William Hoffmeier on Feb. 28, 1929. The couple settled on a farm near Buck Grove and were blessed with the birth of one son. They farmed until Bill's death in 1972 and one year later, Sadie retired to Denison.
Sadie was a loving and caring wife and mother who devoted her life to her family. She enjoyed occupying her free time with crocheting and caring for her flowers and loved to bake. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and St. John's Lutheran Ladies Aid in Buck Grove.
She was preceded in death by her husband, two sisters and two brothers. Survivors include one son, Ralph and his wife, Marion of Denison; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Ralph Peters and his wife, Della of Carroll; two sisters, Edna Kelm and Martha Peters, both of Denison; and one sister-in-law, Edna Peters of Denison.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 21, 1993 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Pastor Kurt Kaiser and Pastor Philip E. Bloch officiated the service and graveside rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Viola Marie (Schurke) Bartlett (1917 - 2002)
Viola Marie Bartlett was born on a farm in Otter Creek Township, rural, Kiron, Iowa, January 10, 1917, the daughter of John and Marie Schultz Schurke. She was raised on the farm and received her education in the local rural schools. Following her education she remained at home and was employed in domestic work for area residents.On April 28, 1936, Viola was united in marriage with Clarence W. Bartlett at the Zion Lutheran Parsonage in Denison, Iowa. Their Union was blessed with two daughters, Beverlyrae and Sharon. They made their home on the Schurke family farm where she lived her entire life. Viola enjoyed life as a busy homemaker, farmwife and mother. Baking and cooking for family and friends were her passion and lunch and coffee were always ready when anyone came to visit. She enjoyed decorating her beautiful home and crocheted with exceptional talent. Her family was of utmost importance to her and she always cherished her visits with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Due to failing health the last five years of Viola's life was spent in and out of area hospitals and care facilities when she was not able to be at home and lovingly cared for by her husband, Clarence.
Viola died Saturday morning, May 11, 2002, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa. At the time of her death she had attained the age of 85 years, 4 months and 1 day. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Deloit and a member of their Ladies Aid.
Viola was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Everett Schurke. Those remaining to cherish her memory include her husband of over 66 years, Clarence W. Bartlett of Kiron, Iowa, two daughters and their husbands, Beverlyrae and Irvin Stehr of Odebolt, Iowa, and Sharon and Edward Warren of Council Bluffs, Iowa, five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, one sister, Elvira Baird of Council Bluffs, Iowa, one sister-in-law, LaBelle Schurke of Springfield, Missouri, nieces, nephews, other relatives, neighbors and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 15, 2002, at Faith Lutheran Church in Deloit, Iowa, with the Rev. Hilmer J. Hafner officiating. Music for the service included the congregation singing "What A Friend We Have In Jesus", "In The Cross Of Christ I Glory" and "Abide With Me". Erna Mae Aldag served as organist. Casket bearers were Kenneth Ekstrom, Allen Ekstrom, David Ekstrom, James Warren, Bud Warren and Jeff Lusvardi. Interment was at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Stockholm Township, Kiron, Iowa. Edward H. Bandow (1913 - 2005)
Edward H. Bandow was born on a farm in East Boyer Township, Denison, Iowa, January 15, 1913, the son of Louis and Adele Jaeger Bandow. He was received into God's Kingdom of Grace through the sacrament of Holy Baptism March 30, 1913 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and confirmed in his Christian faith there, April 10, 1927. He was raised on the farm and received his education in the local rural schools. After his education he farmed at home until entering the service.During World War II, from April 27, 1942 until his discharge on October 10, 1945, Edward served his country in the United States Army. He was awarded seven Bronze Stars for serving in the battles and campaigns in Rhineland, Ardennes, Central Europe, Algeria French Morocco, Sicily, Normandy and Northern France. He received the Purple Heart for wounds received in action near Drinkhausen (Dieringhausen), Germany October 29, 1944.
On January 29, 1942, Edward was united in marriage with Edna Anna Beerman at the Zion Lutheran Parsonage in Denison, Iowa. Their union was blessed with four children, Howard, Joyce, Marilyn and Donald. They made their home on a farm in East Boyer Township for nine years before moving to their farm in Westside Township where they farmed until retiring in 1978. For many years Edward and Edna enjoyed spending the winter months in Texas. In 1980 they moved from the farm to Denison. Edna died April 10, 1984.
Edward continued to make his home in Denison maintaining an active interest in his farm which he visited most summer days. One of his favorite pastimes was going for drives often to the Iowa Great Lakes Area. Due to failing health he moved to Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, December 1, 1998 where he had since resided.
Edward died Monday morning, February 21, 2005 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa. At the time of his death he had been blessed with 92 years, 1 month and 6 days.
Including his parents and his wife, Edward was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Amy Marie Johnson, two brothers, August and Gilbert Bandow and two sisters, Ella Bandow and Elsie Bandow who died in infancy.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, February 23, 2005 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa with the Rev. Kurt R. Kaiser and the Rev. David M. Sewing officiating. Music for the service was provided by Sarah Schumacher singing, "On Eagles Wings" and "Old Rugged Cross" and the congregation singing, "My Faith Looks Up To Thee." Karen Kahl served as organist. Pallbearers included Tom Scroggins, Jason Scroggins, Todd Johnson, Ron Nelson, Mark Crampton and Duane Hollander. Military honors were provided by the American Legion Post 8, Denison, Iowa. Internment was at the Nishnabotna Cemetery at Manilla, Iowa. Following the internment the family invited everyone to return to the church and join them for fellowship and a luncheon prepared and served by the Zion Lutheran Dorcas Society. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa was in charge of the arrangements.

Edwin Carl Fick (1915 - 1994)
Edwin Carl Fick was born June 24, 1915 in Mapleton, Iowa, the son of Fred and Martha (Kelm) Fick. Edwin grew up in Schleswig, Iowa, where he was confirmed and married at Immanuel Lutheran Church.On October 18, 1936 he married Pearl Higgins. In 1942 they moved to Bellevue, Nebraska, where he worked for the Glen L. Martin Aircraft Co. In 1947 the family moved to LeMars, Iowa where he worked for Northwest Iowa Power Coop as a right-of-way coordinator and later as a district manager for the Motorola Co. In 1976 he retired and moved to Longmont, Co., where he was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church.
Edwin passed away on August 20, 1994 at the age of 79 years at Life Care Center of Longmont, Colorado.
Surviving to cherish his memory are his wife, Pearl; two daughters, Judith Tucker and her husband Richard of Lakewood, Co. and Jane VanderTuig and her husband Steve of Aurora, Nebraska and one son, Fred and his wife Nancy of Longmont; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Leona Schroeder of Council Bluffs, Iowa and Beatta Bielenberg of Mapleton, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Blondina Olson and a brother, Lehnhardt Fick.
Funeral services were held on August 24, 1994 at Messiah Lutheran Church in Longmont, Co. with Rev. Kent Schnegelberger officiating. Burial was in Foothills Gardens of Memory in Longmont. Lewellen Longmont Memorial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Edwin Herman Rusch (1917 - 1998)
Edwin Herman Rusch was born March 12, 1917, the son of Christian and Minnie Claussen Rusch. He died Friday, August 28, 1998 at the Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton, Iowa at the age of eighty-one.Edwin was born on the Rusch family farm in Morgan Township, northwest of Schleswig, Iowa and was baptized in Christ on July 8, 1917 by Rev. W.R. Wetzeler and later confirmed on March 20, 1932 by Rev. Kielhorn. He received his education in a rural school near his home.
On September 12, 1948, Edwin was united in marriage to Gladys Whited at the Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Church in Schleswig, Iowa by Rev. A.F. Rinne. The couple settled on the family farm, where they raised crops and livestock. The couple retired and moved to Schleswig in 1985. Edwin was a very faithful member of United Church of Christ, Schleswig, where he served on the Church Council, was General Fund Treasurer, Vice President of Brother Hood, served on the Property Committee, and was caretaker of the church. He was also a member of the Birthday Club since 1948, NC+ Seed Corn Dealer for many years and received a twenty-five year award from the ASC, where he served as chairman for many years.
He was a very loving husband, father and grandfather who adored his granddaughters. In his leisure time, Edwin enjoyed bowling, trapping and socializing in card playing with his family and friends. He also loved going to the sale barn. In 1913, the couple celebrated their silver wedding anniversary and in 1987 Edwin was given a party in his honor for his seventieth birthday; their fortieth wedding anniversary was celebrated in 1988.
Edwin was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter in infancy. Survivors include his wife, Gladys of Schleswig; one son, Roger Rusch and his wife, Connie of Schleswig; two granddaughters, Janet Whiteing and her husband, Charles of Story City; Jamie Rusch of Council Bluffs; two brothers, Harvey Rusch and his wife, Helma of Wall Lake; Elmer Rusch and his wife; Mildred of Denison; longtime farming companion, Larry Wiebers and his wife, Pat of Schleswig; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Edwin John Glau (1911 - 1990)
Edwin John Glau, the son of John and Dora (Riessen) Glau, was born Aug. 8, 1911, in Crawford County, near Schleswig, Ia. He attended parochial schools.On Dec. 14, 1938, he married Marcella Preul in Ida Grove. The couple farmed in the Ida Grove and Schleswig areas until 1978 when they retired and moved to Mapleton. He worked for the Lyon Publishing Company which is owned by his daughter and son-in-law.
Edwin John Glau died Thursday, May 24, 1990, at the St. Lukes Hospital in Sioux City, having attained the age of 78 years, nine months and 16 days. He was a member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Mapleton.
Survivors include his wife, Marcella; a daughter and her husband, Barbara and Michael Lyon of Mapleton; a son and his wife, Roger and Kay Glau of Spencer; a sister, Mildred McKenzie of Kingman, Ariz.; four grandchildren: Becky of Sioux Falls, S.D. and Patty of Mapleton, Kirstin Glau and Cody John Glau of Spencer; and three step-grandchildren: Jason, Eric and Sarah Schultz of Spencer. Preceding Edwin in death were his parents.
Funeral services were held on Saturday at 2 p.m. at St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Mapleton with Pastor Edgar Bode officiating. Mrs. Norma Jean Dose was organist for congregational singing "Our God, Our Help In Ages Past" and "I Know That My Redeemer Lives." Pallbearers were Allen Riessen, Roger McCandless, Al Wayne Riessen, Wade Preul, Jon Sailer and Scott Bauer. Interment was in the Ida Grove Cemetery at Ida Grove.

Eldon Peter Claus Brodersen (1918 - 1995)
Eldon Peter Claus Brodersen, son of Hans A. and Alma Ullrich Brodersen was born May 12, 1918 on a farm in Nishnabotna Township. He attended rural school at Hanover #7.On December 27, 1940 Eldon was united in marriage to Muriel Pollock at the Methodist Parsonage in Denison, Iowa. Their union was blessed with four children, Roger, Larry, Karen and Jean. They made their home on a farm southeast of Denison. Eldon was a lifetime member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison where he was baptized and was confirmed in 1932 by Pastor William Freese.
Eldon loved farming which he did for most of his life along with raising livestock especially cattle. In 1961, he started Brodersen Trucking for which he hauled grain and livestock for many area farmers. Eldon also enjoyed playing bingo, drives in the country, dancing and especially spending time with his family. He loved visiting with his friends and neighbors at local coffee shops. Eldon was a loving, caring and hardworking man whom everyone got along with.
In 1989 Eldon and Muriel retired and moved into their home in Denison, where they remained until they went to live at Eventide in October of 1993. Eldon's death occurred on Friday, June 30, 1995 at St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha. At the time of his death he had attained the age of seventy-seven.
Eldon was preceded in death by his wife, Muriel, who died May 16, 1995; his parents, Hans and Alma; two brothers, one in infancy and Vernon Brodersen.
Those left to cherish his memory are his sons, Roger and his wife, Rose Mary of Denison; Larry and his wife, Linda of Charter Oak; daughters, Karen Johnson and her husband, Dale of Wayne, Nebraska and Jean Nihsen and her husband, Vernis of Denison; a sister, Bernice Kuhlmann and her husband, Vernon of Charter Oak; twelve grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Helen Powell of Denison; brothers-in-law, Ray Pollock and his wife, Dorothy of Vail and J.R. "Tony" Pollock and his wife, Alyce of Forest Grove, Oregon; and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 3, 1995 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa with Pastor Kurt Kaiser officiating the service and grave side rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Henry Henningsen singing "On Eagle's Wings" and "The Lord's Prayer" and congregational hymn "How Great Thou Art." Honorary pallbearers were: Marlo Henningsen, Craig Brodersen, Barry Kuhlmann, Lawrence Slater, Robert Pollock, Robert Jacoby, Harold Eggert, Robert DeMey, Virgil Walde, Mark Mathies, Wayne Igou and Orval Timm. Pallbearers were: Aaron Brodersen, Jennifer Johnson, Brian Brodersen, Jessica Johnson, Michael Nihsen, Simone DuBois, Tracie Nihsen. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them for lunch at the church, served by the Zion Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Eldor Petersen (1911 - 2004)
Eldor Petersen was born May 30, 1911, the son of Peter and Meta Erichson Petersen. He died Sunday, July 18, 2004 at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa at the age of ninety-three.Eldor was born in Schleswig, Iowa and received his education in the Schleswig School Systems. He was baptized in Christ as an infant and later confirmed on April 10, 1927 at the Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Church in Schleswig. After completing his education, Eldor farmed southeast of Schleswig and the Battle Creek area. He also lived in Kiron and Anthon before moving to Schleswig.
Eldor was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Alvin Petersen. Survivors include one niece, Mary Ellen Styer and her husband, Bill of Seaside, California; two nephews, Mervin Petersen and his wife, Verna of Odebolt; Richard Petersen and his wife, Marilyn of Salinas, California; a sister-in-law, Violet Petersen of Seaside, California; special friend, Helen Gries from Sioux City; several cousins, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, July 23, 2004 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Chris Burtnett officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig, Iowa. The service music was a tape of Charlotte Church singing, "Amazing Grace" and "The Lord's Prayer." Eldred Gronau (1913 - 1992)
Eldred Gronau was born on August 26, 1913, the son of Fred and Alvena Schurke Gronau. He died on Friday, March 6, 1992 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison at the age of 78 years.Eldred grew up in Hayes Township, Ida County and attended a rural school near his home. He was baptized a Christian in the Stockholm Lutheran Church and was confirmed in the Lutheran Faith at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison on April 1, 1926.
In June, 1939, he was united in marriage to Marcella Miller of Schleswig at the Friedens Church in Schleswig and were blessed with a family of two children. After having received his education, Eldred began his farming career in the Kiron and Ida Grove areas in 1940. The couple settled on the farm until 1974 when they moved to Schleswig and then retired in 1978.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Everett in 1973. Survivors include his wife, Marcella of Schleswig; one daughter, Janice Siebe of Schleswig and one son, LaWayne and his wife, Pam of Ida Grove, Iowa. Other survivors include four grandchildren: K. Lynn Siebe of Des Moines, Iowa; Kelli Siebe of Schleswig; Shari Briggle of Schleswig; and Layne Gronau of Ida Grove. Also one great-granddaughter, Brittani Briggle of Schleswig and one sister-in-law, Bernice Gronau of Schleswig.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 9, 1992, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa with Rev. Richard E. Nelson and Donald R. Wagner officiating the service and grave side rites held in the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for soloist Jane Gronau singing "Asleep in Jesus" and "I Know Who Holds Tomorrow." Pallbearers were: Kim Brockman, Gerald Gronau, Richard Pickel, Kevin Lafrentz, Melvin Miller and Abe Gronau. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Walter A. Eleanor Emilie Marguartha (Groth) Breckling (1917 - 2000)
Eleanor Emilie Marguartha Breckling was born February 10, 1917, the daughter of John and Hilda Petersen Groth. She died Wednesday, March 29, 2000 at the Eventide Nursing Home in Denison, Iowa at the age of eighty-three.Eleanor was born in Goodrich Township, Crawford County, Iowa and was baptized in Christ on August 9, 1917 at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. She was confirmed on Palm Sunday, March 20, 1932 at the Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Church in Schleswig, Iowa by Rev. Kurt Kiehlhorn. Eleanor received her education in Goodrich Number 2 School and after completing her education she helped at home.
On March 6, 1940, Eleanor was united in marriage to Walter Fredericks in the Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. The couple made their home on a farm near Berne, Iowa until moving north of Kenwood and later to the home place northwest of Denison. Walter died on November 19, 1957 and Eleanor continued living on the farm, until her marriage to Johannes Breckling on September 24, 1964, making their home in Schleswig, Iowa. Johannes died on February 23, 1982 and Eleanor continued to live in Schleswig until entering the Eventide Nursing Home in Denison on January 3, 2000.
Eleanor was a member of the United Church of Christ and their Women's Guild. She was a very loving and caring mother and grandmother who especially enjoyed her great-granddaughter, Brittney. She enjoyed visiting with her family, socializing, playing cards and dancing.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, Walter Fredericks and Johannes Breckling. Survivors include one son, Leroy Fredericks and his wife, Marlene of Schleswig; four grandchildren, Brian Fredericks of Fort Dodge; Bryce Fredericks and his wife, Beth of Denison; Brenda Fredericks of Cedar Rapids; Brad Fredericks of West Des Moines; one great-granddaughter, Brittney; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, April 1, 2000 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. Rev. Merle Mahnken officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for the congregational hymns "What a Friend We Have in Jesus," "Beautiful Savior," and "Lift High the Cross." Those serving as pallbearers were: Darrell Peterson, Wilbert Groth, Earl Groth, Herman Meiners, Don Murray and Tom Groth. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them for fellowship and lunch served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of the arrangements.

Eleanor Ann (Siemer) Mattson (1912 - 2001)
Eleanor Ann Mattson was born May 18, 1912, the daughter of Herman and Gertrude Losch Siemer. She died Saturday, March 31, 2001 at the Trinity Medical Center in Carrollton, Texas, at the age of eighty-eight. Eleanor was born on a farm near Dow City, Iowa and received her education at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic School, attending High School and graduating in 1930.On August 30, 1930, Eleanor was united in marriage to Herbert Mattson at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison, Iowa. The couple settled on a farm north of Arion and were blessed with the birth of four children. In 1944, Eleanor and her children moved to Denison, where she worked at the Armour Plant in the butter room. Later she worked in various motels and hotels, including the Neilson Hotel and the Wishbone Cafe. Eleanor moved to Texas in 1996 to be near her family.
Eleanor was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her kindness and affection will remain forever with those she loved.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter in infancy, Karen May, one grandson, three brothers, Raymond Siemer, Frank Siemer, Joseph Siemer and one sister, Agneta Jepsen.
Survivors include one daughter, Delores Marten and her husband, Louis of The Colony, Texas; two sons, Robert Mattson and his wife, Laura; Jerry Mattson and his wife, Jan, all of Carrollton, Texas; nine grandchildren, Jeff Marten, Lisa Spitz, both of Texas; Brenda Hersey of Ohio; Jay Mattson, Torrey Mattson, Ryan Mattson, all of Texas; Rick Mattson and his wife, Michelle of California; David Mattson, Tamara Mattson, both of Texas; five great-grandchildren, Jake, Renee, and Jamie Spitz, children of Lisa and Mike Spitz, Lindsay and Jenna Mattson, daughters of Rick and Michelle Mattson; three sisters, Ann Groth of Billings, Montana; Caroline Fertig; Bernadine Langroff, both of Odebolt; and one brother, Bob Siemer of Omaha; other relatives and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial was held at 9:00 a.m., Thursday, April 5, 2001 at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison, Iowa. Fr. Edward Murray served as celebrant of the Mass with interment at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Cemetery in Denison. Jean Cornelius provided the organ accompaniment for the St. Rose of Lima Choir. Pallbearers were Torrey Mattson, Jason Mattson, Ryan Mattson, Jeff Marten, Gary Bremel, and Todd Sabo. A Legion of Mary Rosary was held at 4:00 p.m. and a Vigil Service at 5:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 4, 2001 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the Parish Center, served by the Altar Society. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Eleanor Elise (Johannsen) Grill (1913 - 1971)
Eleanor Elise Johannsen, daughter of Louis and Anna Ladwig Johannsen was born in Paradise Township, Crawford County on Aug. 22, 1913. She was baptized in infancy and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Zion Lutheran in Denison. She attended the public schools and later taught in the Denison schools for a number of years.She had been in ill health in recent years and was hospitalized in Omaha and Denison a number of times. She came to the Denison hospital for the last time on July 2 and died Aug. 4 (1971) at the age of 57 years, 11 months and 12 days.
She was married to Martin Grill; he preceded her in death along with her parents and a brother Leonard.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Diane Kermode of Atlantic, a brother Arnold of Grand Rapids, Minn., a sister Inez of Hot Springs, Ark., two grandchildren, Todd and Kimberly Kermode of Atlantic and other relatives. She was a member of the Zion Evening Guild.
Funeral services were held Aug. 7 with Rev. Carl W. Schmidt officiating at the Lutheran Church. Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist and accompanied Henry Henningsen as soloist. Interment was in the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens with the following as pallbearers: Tom Johannsen, Wilmer Halverson, Bernard Duncan, Louie Johannsen, Marcus Wichmann and William Boyens.

Lloyd Winfield Cadwell (1911 - 1995)
Lloyd Winfield Cadwell was born March 14, 1911, at Manning, Iowa, the son of Alvin Winfield and Tilda Gudilla Wigg Cadwell. The family resided at Mapleton, Iowa until he was four years old when they returned to Manilla. He received his education in the Manilla Public School through the eighth grade and attended high school for one year at Lakota, South Dakota. He moved to Montana when he was age sixteen where he was employed as a ranch hand, later being employed as a performer and animal caretaker for the Seal Brothers Circus. He returned to Manilla in 1935 riding a buckskin horse the entire way from Montana.On December 15, 1933, Lloyd was united in marriage with Margaret Birdie Warner. They made their home in Manilla and past 38 years had resided at Astor in rural Manilla. Throughout his adult working years Lloyd held several different types of employment including: truck driver for Brady Transfer and Paul Knop; farming for himself for one year at Dow City; farmhand for C.A. Saunders; wool buyer for William Miller; truck driver for E.R. Longnecker; part-time employee of W. C. White Furniture and Funeral Parlor; one year for John Mundt at the Chevy Garage in Ricketts; and for 29 1/2 years he was employed for the City of Manilla as electrical lineman and water maintenance man, retiring in 1975. Following his retirement he was employed for ten summers for the Manilla Telephone Company. In the early 1930's he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps stationed in Arkansas working in the forestry service and as cook and baker. For many years he was on the special police force in Manilla and in the 1930's and 40's he was a professional wrestler.
Lloyd was a man of many talents and interests including rodeos, wrestling, dancing polkas and waltzes, going to auctions, playing the piano and mouth harp, cards, family sing-a-longs, and listening to old time country and western music. He enjoyed his large gardens, especially raising tomatoes and sharing his plentiful bounty with those less fortunate. He loved people, especially enjoying spoiling the children and helping the elderly and down and out.
On February 7 of this year tragedy struck and the Cadwells lost their home and possessions in a house fire. Since that time he had made his home with his daughter, Karen and husband Wayne Plagman at Irwin.
Lloyd died Thursday afternoon, November 16, 1995 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 84 years, 8 months and 2 days. He was baptized at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Irwin and was a member of the United Church in Manilla, Iowa.
Including his parents Lloyd was preceded in death by two sisters, Mabel Miller and Erma Cadwell who died in infancy, four brothers, Vernon Cadwell and three in infancy, Judson and twins, Ray and Roy Cadwell, two half-sisters, Maud Ward and Maurine Willson, one half-brother, Willis Cadwell, son-in-law, Elmer Lanoue, daughter-in-law, Dixie Turner Cadwell, father and mother-in-law, Jesse and Hedvka Warner, and two brothers-in-law, Harry and William Warner.
Those who remain to cherish his memory include his wife, Margaret Cadwell of the Little Flower Haven in Earling, Iowa, five children, Elsie Lloydene Cadwell of Manilla, William Stanley Cadwell and special friend, Suk Adams of Manilla, Karen Alice and husband, Wayne H. Plagman of Irwin, Juanita Kay and husband W. "Johnny West" Heyn of Colorado City, Colorado, and Margaret "Midge" Smith and husband Roland of Defiance, 17 grandchildren including two grandsons raised in their home, Gregory Cadwell and wife, Sheryl and Jeffrey Malone of Manilla, one foster granddaughter, 23 great-grandchildren, two sisters, Grace King of Defiance and Alma "Randy" and husband, Christopher Yager of Council Bluffs, Iowa, nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
Memorial services were held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, November 20, 1995 at the United Methodist Church in Manilla, Iowa with the Rev. Ken Ritchie officiating. Music for the service was provided by Kay Rutherford singing "In the Garden" and "Amazing Grace" with Ruth Joens serving as organist. Margaret (Meseck) Meyer (1910 - 2000)
Margaret Meyer was born on a farm in Charter Oak Township, Crawford County, Iowa, May 25, 1910, the oldest of nine children born to Theodore and Ella Hopp Meseck. She was received into God's Kingdom of Grace through the sacrament of Holy Baptism June 19, 1910 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hanover Township and confirmed in her Christian Faith in March of 1926 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Soldier Township. She was raised on the farm receiving her education in the local parochial schools.On February 22, 1931, Margaret was united in marriage with Henry O. Meyer at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Soldier Township, with the Rev. Von Gemmingen officiating. Their union was blessed with three daughters, Marilyn, Ruth Ann and Renee. They made their home on the farm one and a half mile north of Ricketts where Margaret enjoyed helping her husband with the farm work and raising her family. In 1975, they retired and moved to Ricketts where they resided until moving to Denison in July of 1982.
Henry died September 30, 1982 and Margaret continued to make her home in Denison. In 1992, due to failing health, Margaret made her home with her daughter, Renee and Butch Miller in Denison until moving to Eventide Lutheran Home in June of 1994. In earlier years when her health permitted she enjoyed gardening, flowers, her pet cats and playing cards. She had the ability to remember dates and found great enjoyment in remembering family and friends with birthday greetings.
Margaret died Monday evening, May 29, 2000 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison. At the time of her death she had attained the age of 90 years and 4 days. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.
Including her parents and husband, Margaret was preceded in death by two daughters, Ruth Ann as an infant in 1944 and Marilyn Iversen, June 15, 1981, three brothers, Henry Meseck, Delaine Meseck and Merrill Meseck and two sisters, Lucille Kelm and Lila Topf.
Those who remain to cherish her memory include one daughter, Renee and husband, Butch Miller of Denison, son-in-law Donald Iversen of Encino, California, four grandchildren, Sheryl Iversen of Oceanside, California, Jennifer and husband, Pastor Steve Bagnall of Lewisville, Minnesota, Camille and husband, John Shipley of Hanover Park, Illinois and Elliott Miller and wife, Kari of 29 Palms, California; four great-grandchildren, Ann and Paige Bagnall of Lewisville, Minnesota, Jack Shipley of Hanover Park, Illinois and Sierra Miller of 29 Palms, California; one brother, Edgar Meseck and wife, Elvera of Schleswig; two sisters, Ellen Jepsen of Denison and Delores and husband, LeRoy Bumann of Schleswig; three sisters-in-law, Esther Meseck of Charter Oak, Pauline Meyer of Manilla and Erma Wingrove of Charter Oak, two special nieces, Myra McFarland of Schleswig and Judy Neitzke of Tilden, Nebraska, many other nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, June 2, 2000 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa with the Rev. Kurt R. Kaiser officiating. Music for the service was provided by Larry Boeck singing "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and the congregation singing, "Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me" and "Lift High the Cross." Karen Kahl served as organist. Casket bearers included Gary Meseck, Dennis Jepsen, Ron Kelm, Dwayne Lee, John M. Dorfler and Ross Thul. Interment was at the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Soldier Township, Ricketts, Iowa. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Oral H. Riley (1917 - 1993)
Oral H. Riley was born the son of Harry and Launa Eagle Riley, Jan. 14, 1917. He died at the Denison Care Center on Thursday, Oct. 14, 1993 at the age of seventy-six years. Oral was born in Lawrenceville, Ill. and received his education in Fairfield, Ia. As a young man, he moved with his family to Deloit.On Dec. 5, 1937, Oral was united in marriage to Elenora Schurke at the Zion Lutheran Parsonage by Rev. C.W. Schmidt. The couple settled on a farm near Deloit where they were blessed with the birth of eight children. He was a caring and loving husband and father who devoted his life to his family. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison where he and his family were baptized and confirmed and was a school board director in Milford Township for 37 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Robert in March of 1991; one son-in-law, Raymond Johnson in 1983; two brothers, James and George; and two sisters, Helen and Mary Alyce.
Survivors include his wife, Elenora of Deloit; one son, Gerald and his wife, Sharon of Deloit; six daughters, Phyllis Otto and her husband, Merlin of Alta, Darlene Reetz and her husband, Gaylon of Deloit, Bernice Vetter and her husband, John of Arcadia, Pauline Johnson of Mondovi, Wis., Anna Mae Hikins of Deloit, and Linda Riddle and her husband, Gary, of Ute. Also 24 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; one brother, William and his wife, Gladys of Denison; and three sisters, Lorene McCollough of Vail, Dorothy Boldin of Denison and Ada Helkenn and her husband, Art, of Schleswig.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1993 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison with Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. Philip E. Bloch officiating the service and graveside rites held in the Garden of Devotion, at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens. Karen Kahl served as the organ accompaniment for soloist, Renae Cay Claussen singing, "On Eagles Wings" and "I'm But a Stranger Here" and the congregational hymn, "I Know That My Redeemer Lives." Those serving as pallbearers were Gaylon Reetz Jr., Andrew Hikins, Jeffrey Vetter, Michael Otto, Douglas Riley, James Hikins, LaVern Reetz, Craig Reetz, James Vetter and Mark Riley. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them for a lunch at the church, served by the Dorcas Society. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Phyllis Jessie (Jacobs) Brotherson (1918 - 2005)
Phyllis Jessie Brotherson, the daughter of Phillip and Adeline (Wiese) Jacobs and her stepfather, Henry Christiansen, was born February 10, 1918, in Little Rock, Arkansas. At young age, her family moved to rural Crawford County in Iowa where she attended country school.On April 12, 1936, Phyllis was united in marriage to Loyal Brotherson at the Wheatland Presbyterian Church Parsonage. After their marriage, they made their home on a farm in rural Crawford County. Eight children were born to this union. Phyllis was a dedicated wife and loving mother and grandmother.
Her early-married years were spent with her children on the farm, but in 1967, she began working at the Crawford County Hospital in Denison. In 1970, Loyal and Phyllis moved off of the family farm and into Denison where she continued working at the hospital until her retirement in 1982. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Vail, as well as the Crawford County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed spending time with her friends, dancing, playing cards and especially being with her family.
Loyal, her husband of fifty-five years, died on September 19, 1991. After his death, Phyllis remained in Denison until 1999, when she moved to Lake View, Iowa. Phyllis died at the Lake City Hospital in Lake City, Iowa on October 6, 2005, having attained the age of eighty-seven years, seven months and twenty-six days.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Adeline Christiansen; her grandson, Mark Brotherson; her great-grandson, Patrick Brotherson; her sister, Shirley Gehring; and her brother, Dale Christiansen.
Phyllis is survived by her children: Howard Brotherson and his wife Dolores of Wall Lake, Iowa; Leon Brotherson and his wife Jolene of Avoca, Iowa; Sandra and her husband Jim Roth of Wall Lake, Iowa; Jerilyn and her husband Gene Schulte of Lake View, Iowa; Keith Brotherson and his wife Ilene of Waukee, Iowa; Rebecca and her husband Bob Rodman of Whiting, Iowa; Starr and her husband, Doug Maasen of Missouri Valley, Iowa and Todd Brotherson and his wife Debbie of Denison, Iowa; twenty-nine grandchildren, fifty-three great-grandchildren; her brothers and sister Bernard Christiansen and his wife Beverly of Schleswig, Iowa; Beverly Hammer of Boone, Iowa; Melroy Christiansen and his wife Betty of Boyer, Iowa; her sister-in-law Millie Christiansen of Des Moines Iowa; nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.
A prayer service was held at 7:00 p.m., Sunday, October 9, 2005, at the Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa, with the Rev. Don Gibson officiating. Music for this service included a recording of "Sweet By and By." Private family inurnment was held Monday, October 10, 2005, at Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Ralph Walter Bohlmann (1918 - 1997)
Ralph Walter Bohlmann was born August 13, 1918, the son of Rudolph and Hedwig Kortman Bohlmann; He died Monday, October 13, 1997 at his home in Denison, Iowa at the age of seventy-nine. Ralph was born on a farm in Morgan Township, Charter Oak. He was baptized in Christ September 10, 1918 at St. Paul Lutheran Church Hanover Township and later confirmed there on March 20, 1932. He received his education at the St. Paul's Lutheran School in Hanover Township and the Morgan No. 9 School.On December 6, 1942, Ralph was united in marriage to LaVerne Streck at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig. The couple made their home on a farm in Hanover Township for three years, before moving to the home place in Morgan Township and farming until 1980, when they retired. The couple continued to live on the farm, until 1989, when they moved to Denison. In recent years the Bohlmann farm was awarded the designation of being a Century Farm for continuous ownership in the same family for one hundred years. He also worked for his brother, Orville at Bohlmann Inc., delivering stock tanks in six different states. Ralph was a past member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, where he was a member for seventy years and served on every church board and also past president of the Ricketts Phone Company.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church for the past nine years and a very active member of the National Farmers Organization. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and using quotes and quips. He enjoyed playing the concertina and accordion. In his leisure time, Ralph enjoyed fishing, bowling, and was a NASCAR and Minnesota Viking fan. He had been in failing health and was cared for at home, by his loving wife, LaVerne.
Ralph was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, LaVerne of Denison; one daughter, Sheryl Norenberg and her husband, Charles of Odebolt; one son, Randy Bohlmann of Charter Oak; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; three brothers, Victor Bohlmann and his wife, Vernet of Jefferson; Edwin Bohlmann and his wife, Lenora of Onawa; Orville Bohlmann and his wife, Clara of Denison; two sisters, Leola Ault and her husband, Truman of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Estella Rahn of Denison; many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, October 16, 1997 at the Zion Lutheran Church, Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. Daniel Gifford officiated the service and grave side rites held at the St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Hanover Township, Charter Oak. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "What a Friend We Have in Jesus," "Abide with Me! Fast Falls the Eventide" and "I Know that My Redeemer Lives." Those serving as pallbearers were: Kent Bohlmann, Robert Rollefson, Mark Spiegel, Gailen Meseck, Gary Streck and Butch Jensen. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Dorcas Society. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements. The family would like to acknowledge the prayers, memorials, flowers, food and cards of sympathy and politely thank each and everyone for their kind considerations. Rather than acknowledging each with a card of thanks, the family would prefer using the money for a memorial in Ralph's name.

Stanley Joseph Bukacek (1918 - 2001)
Stanley Joseph Bukacek was born August 14, 1918, the son of Joseph and Josephine Stehlik Bukacek. He died at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Friday, October 5, 2001, at the age of eighty-three. Stanley was born on a farm near Vail, Iowa. As a child, he lived with his patients in the Vail and Westside area, and received his education in a rural school near his home, and helped his father farm.On July 20, 1941, Stanley was united in marriage to Maryalyce Riley. The couple settled on a farm near Vail and was blessed with the birth of two sons. He farmed for John Stehlik and then, William Slechta, making their home west of Vail for twenty-six years. In 1969, he and Maryalyce moved to Deloit and Stanley worked for Tenhulzen farms for several years. He subsequently worked for the Denison Municipal Utilities until his retirement when he began caring for Maryalyce during her illness. In recent years he moved to Eventide apartments.
Stanley was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Denison. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, enjoying his grandchildren and family visits. He collected ball point pens with advertising as a memorabilia of past businesses.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Maryalyce in 1987; and one sister, Blanche Anderson. Survivors include two sons, Stan and his wife, Jackie of Charter Oak; and Roger and his wife, Carolyn of Denison; eight grandchildren: Lori Mumm and husband, Bryan of Charter Oak; Penney Simpson and Wayne Iverson of Valley Center, Kansas; Darien Bukacek of Omaha; Tammy Rice and husband, Scott of Lincoln, Nebraska; Tawnya LiaBraaten and husband, Keith of Papillion, Nebraska; Jason Beermann, Jeremy Beermann and Jennifer Beermann of Ute; and six great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Velma Agnes Kathrina (Volkmann) Bliesmann (1916 - 1998)
Velma Agnes Kathrina Bliesmann was born October 4, 1916, the daughter of Jacob and Agnes Grell Volkmann. She died Tuesday, November 24, 1998 at the Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove at the age of eighty-two. Velma was born in Morgan Township, Schleswig, Iowa where she lived with her parents. She received her education at the Schleswig Community School, graduating with the class of 1935.On August 25, 1937, Velma was united in marriage to Walter Bliesmann at the Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Church, Schleswig, Iowa. The couple settled on the family farm north of Schleswig and were blessed with the birth of two children. Velma was a member of the United Church of Christ, Schleswig. She was a very loving and caring mother and grandmother who had a deep love for her family. In 1994, she moved to Ida Grove to be near them. Velma enjoyed reading in her leisure time.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Walter in 1994. Survivors include one daughter, Mary Ann Schultz and her husband, Allen; one son, Wayne Bliesmann and his wife, Ina Mae, all of Ida Grove; two grandchildren, Christine Comstock and her husband, Doug of Denison and Michael Bliesmann of Boone; one sister, Luella Thul of Schleswig; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, November 28, 1998 at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Gordon Hoyt officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Walter August Harm (1915 - 1990)
Walter August Harm, the son of Martin and Bertha Brodersen Harm, was born May 26, 1915, near Denison, Ia., and died Feb. 8, 1990, at the Clarkson Hospital in Omaha, Neb., at the age of 74 years. Walter grew up on a farm and attended a rural school. After his education he worked on the family farm, helping his mother after the death of his father.Walter and Regina Vore of Denison were united in marriage April 1, 1948, at Manilla. They enjoyed sharing their lives with two adopted sons. His life was spent farming, an occupation he enjoyed. He was baptized a Christian and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and was a lifelong member of the church. He was also a Trustee of the Denison Township.
Preceding him in death were his parents. Surviving are: his wife, Regina; his sons, Randall Harm and his wife, Joan of Denison, and Richard Harm and his fiancée, Georgia Kroll, both of Phoenix, Ariz.; two grandchildren, Brian and Tabitha Harm; and one sister, Helen Comstock.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Feb. 12, 1990, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Pastor Kurt Kaiser officiated at the services with interment in the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Cemetery in Denison. Mrs. Karen Kahl was organist and Henry Henningsen was soloist. Solo selection was "How Great Thou Art." The congregational hymns were, "Rock of Ages" and "Nearer My God to Thee." Serving as pallbearers were: Vincent Keating, Wesley Freml, Verdell Brus, Ralph Evers, Carl Muff, Richard Brodersen, Roy Deiber and George Gress. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Walter A. Huebner and Sons' Funeral service of Denison.

Lorane Dorothy (Kahler) McGrath (1917 - 1979)
Lorane Dorothy, daughter of Bernard and Leona Wieck Kahler, was born Feb. 23, 1917 at Waltham, Minn. She graduated from the Denison High School in 1936 and then attended the VanSants Business College in Omaha. She taught in the Schleswig schools until 1945.She was united in marriage with Ralph H. McGrath July 19, 1941, at Tacoma, Wash. After her husband was discharged from the Armed Forces, they returned to Manning to make their home. Since 1962 Lorane has been employed at the Federal Crop Insurance Corporation at Carroll. Her husband, Ralph died July 21, 1972. Lorane was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Manning, the Martha Circle of the church and a member of the WaTan Ye Club.
Following a lengthy illness, she died Mar. 25, 1979, at the Manning General Hospital at the age of 62 years, 1 month and 2 days.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Roland. She is survived by two daughters, Sandra, Mrs. Ray Sorensen of Prairie Village, Kans. and Vicki, Mrs. Jeff Hannasch of Cedar Rapids. By three grandchildren, Eric and Mathew Sorensen and Jonna Hannasch. She is also survived by two sisters, Mildred, Mrs. Leslie Slechta of Vail and Mrs. Opal Bockelmann of Denison as well as other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Mar. 27 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Manning. Officiating was the Reverend Joel Wright. Organist was Mrs. Odessa Wycoff. Interment was in the Manning Cemetery. Pallbearers were Wilbur Hill, Allan Johnson, J. Darall Darr, Glen Jensen, Ronny Frahm and Merlin Struve. Margaret Mary (DeConnick) Keating (1913 - 2007)
Margaret Mary Keating was born October 21, 1913, the second child of Peter B. and Emma Gremonprez DeConnick. She died Thursday, March 1, 2007 at the Eventide Nursing Home in Denison, Iowa at the age of ninety-three.Margaret was born in Goodrich Township, Denison, Iowa and baptized in Christ at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison. She graduated from the Denison High School and obtained her teaching certificate at Buena Vista College. After completing her education she taught school in the Denison area.
On June 4, 1934, Margaret was united in marriage to Leonard Keating at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. The newspaper article announced "Popular Denison Couple Weds." It also stated Margaret has been one of the county's most efficient school teachers. She is known to all as a young lady of pleasing personality and is held in high esteem by her many friends.
After their marriage, the couple moved to Chicago for a short time until the death of her mother-in-law when they returned to Denison. In 1937 they moved to Vail for four years then back to Denison. In 1944 they moved to the Marshall Farm north of Charter Oak, subsequently moving to town in 1949 into the same house Margaret resided in until her health caused her to reside at the Denison Care Center and Eventide.
Margaret worked as a cook and baker at Cronk's Cafe for many years. She then became employed at Farmland Foods until her retirement. Margaret was best known for her wonderful tea rings, caramel rolls, apple fritters, angel food cakes, fudge and chocolate pies which were a big hit at all the benefits and auctions. She enjoyed water color painting, china painting, ceramics, crafts, reading, gardening and embroidering quilt blocks to make beautiful quilts for her family. She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Charter Oak and their Ladies Aid. She was also a member of the Charter Oak Community Club, Charter Oak Clubettes, Charter Oak Legion Auxiliary and served as a 4-H Leader.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Leonard Sr. on June 9, 1976, her son John "Jack" on June 8, 1968, her grandson, Jason Jurgens on May 6, 1990, two sisters, Amelia (Mae) Wolfe and Maxine Lange and one brother, Bernerd "Duke" DeConnick.
Margaret is survived by her children, Leonard Jr. and Mary Ellen Keating of Charter Oak; Mike Keating and special friend, Pam Prell of Ute; Paulette and Tony Mechura of Arlington, Texas; Carol Rosburg, and Nancy and Jim Jurgens, all of Charter Oak. Also special nieces Mary Ann and John Kellogg of Omaha, Patty Reinhardt, and Mary and Bob Fitzsimmons of Wisconsin whom Margaret helped raise; sixteen grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren, twenty-eight great-grandchildren, fourteen step-great-grandchildren, ten great-great-grandchildren, and seven step-great-great-grandchildren. Sisters-in-law, Grace Keating of Denison; Beth Reinhardt of Wisconsin; and Doris DeConnick of California. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and dear friends.
Mass of Christian Burial was held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 10, 2007 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Charter Oak, Iowa. Fr. Donald Slaven served as celebrant of the mass and grave side rites held at St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery in Charter Oak. Kellie Peterson served as pianist, Jim Jurgens as soloist, and Kellie and Tim Peterson and Lynne Glackin served as vocalists. Altar servers were Kami Kuhlmann, Ashton Yossi, Tarin Clausen, and Brock Yossi. Alfred Edward Johannes Jepsen, was born on October 30, 1923, the son of William and Dora Jahn Jepsen. He died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison on Friday morning, June 17, 1994 at the age of seventy years.Alfred was born on the family farm in Goodrich Township near Schleswig. He received his education in a rural school near his home and subsequently farmed with his parents and brother Leonard until retiring to Schleswig in 1979.
He enjoyed fishing, fox hunting and loved to work in his garden. He loved socializing with family and friends in a game of cards and was challenged by assembling jig-saw puzzles. In recent years, he and his brother, Leonard appreciated the time sight-seeing together in their car. Alfred was a kind and considerate person who loved his family and the time he spent with them. He was a member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig and the Schleswig Community Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, LaMorne and three in infancy; two brothers, Leonard who died December 1, 1993 and one infant brother.
Survivors include: two sisters, Marian Quandt and her husband, Melvin of Schleswig and Elaine Whitehead and her husband, Kenneth of Omaha, NE. Other survivors include two nephews, Randy Quandt and his wife, Sherri of Sioux City; Roger Quandt of Las Vegas, NV; two nieces, Susan Langholz and her husband, Jeff of Norfolk, NE; and Cindy Schwitzer and her husband, Keith of Boulder, CO. Also four great-nieces and nephews: Jennifer Langholz at home in Norfolk, NE; Jerry Langholz and his wife Darla of Alamogordo, NM; Allison and Andrew Quandt of Sioux City. One aunt Elsa Jepsen of Denison.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Monday, June 20, 1994 at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, with the Rev. James Schatz officiating the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Dorothy Jessen provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Art Beeck singing "Beyond the Sunset" and "Nearer, My God, to Thee". Honorary Pallbearers were: Roger Quandt, Edwin Jepsen, Vernon Jepsen, Vernon Kuehnhold, Melvin Kuehnhold, Keith Schwitzer, Arnold Jepsen, Herman Jepsen, and Donald Kuehnhold. Pallbearers were: Randy Quandt, Jeff Langholz, Louis Gehring, Edward Marquardt, Fred Jepsen, Edward Jepsen, Wayne Kuehnhold and Freddie D. Jepsen. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them for lunch at the church, served by the Women's Guild. The Huebner Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Alfred F. Schoenfeld (1929 - 2002)
Alfred F. Schoenfeld was born November 2, 1929, the son of Herbert and Anna Preul Schoenfeld. He died March 31, 2002 at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison at the age of seventy-two. Alfred was born in Hanover Township, Charter Oak, Iowa and was Baptized in Christ on December 22, 1929, and confirmed March 25, 1945 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hanover Township. He received his elementary education at Hanover Country School No. 8.On September 10, 1952, he entered the United States Army, serving his country in Korea during the Korean War with the 92nd Armored Field Artillery Battalion. During his service, he was awarded his high school diploma while in Korea, having earned a 92.6 grade point average. He was also awarded numerous medals including the Korean Service medal, the Good Conduct medal, the National Defense Service medal, the United Nations Service medal, and several Bronze Service Stars.
On October 10, 1954, Alfred was united in marriage to Norma Evers at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. The couple was blessed with the birth of three children. The couple began farming in Schleswig and continued to do so until his retirement in 1992. Since then, Alfred worked at Terra Chemical and Farmers Arcadia Coop until the time of his death.
Alfred was a very loving and understanding husband, father, and grandfather, who took exceptional interest in and never missed his children's activities, especially in sports and other school events. He had a special fondness for his grandchildren, calling his grandsons his "buddies" and his granddaughters his "tooties". He was known for his constant smile, telling jokes and laughing. In his spare time, Alfred enjoyed deer hunting, and was one of the first in Iowa to receive a deer hunting license when deer season first opened in 1954. He enjoyed working with his neighbors, especially if there was a plowing bee for someone, playing cards, and visiting with everyone in the feed store. He also enjoyed trips out west to Winner and Pierre, South Dakota to purchase cattle.
He was active in his community, and was very instrumental in obtaining the Army tank in the park in Schleswig. He was an active member of the American Legion and served as a Color Guard Pallbearer. He was currently serving as the Commander of the Veterans of Foreign War. He was a board member of the Morgan Cemetery Association, the Schleswig Community Club and an original member of the Schleswig Calf Show. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig where he served as Treasurer and as an Elder.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Delbert, three brothers-in-law: Howard Keim, Ralph Vogt, and Derald Evers; and one sister-in-law, Maryln Schoenfeld.
He is survived by his loving wife, Norma of Schleswig; two sons: Lydell of Schleswig; and Leon and his wife, Janell of Manning; and one daughter, Calise Thygesen and her husband, Wes of Audubon; seven grandchildren: Kelsey, Adam, Spencer, and their mother, Carla Schoenfeld, of Schleswig; Derrick and Lexie Thygesen of Audubon; and Kalina and Keaton Schoenfeld of Manning; one sister, Narlean Keim of Charter Oak; two brothers: Norman Schoenfeld of Schleswig. and Alvern Schoenfeld of Arizona; three sisters-in-law: Darlene Vogt of Charter Oak; Pat Evers of Denison; and Ardell Ewoldt and her husband, Henry of Kiron; nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 3, 2002 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Merle Mahnken officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "Lift High the Cross", "On Eagle's Wings" and "I Know that My Redeemer Lives". Honorary pallbearers were Marlowe and Diana Schultz, Leroy and Marlene Fredricks, Dave and Janice Nemitz,Verdell and Marlyn Kastner, Merlin and Ruth Maack, Robert and Janet Beeck, Jerrod and Lisa Reimer and Dan Comstock. Military Honors and serving as pallbearers were the V.F.W. Post 3930 and American Legion Post 645. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of arrangements.

Alice Laurie (Krantz) Schneckloth (1920 - 2003)
Alice Laurie Schneckloth was bor November 3, 1920, the daughter of Henry and Lena (Fish) Krantz. She died Wednesday, June 11, 2003 at tht Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison Iowa at the age of eighty-two.Alice was born in Manilla, Iowa. She received her education from the Manilla High School. After graduation, Alice worked as a telephone operator until the 1950's at which time she began working for the Denison Newspaper. She remained at the newspaper until her retirement in the early 80's.
On May 10, 1956, Alice was united in marriage to Herman Schneckloth in Sioux City, Iowa. The couple was blessed with the birth of one son. Alice enjoyed fishing, playing golf and shopping. She was particularly fond of watching her family participate in sports.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include her son, Scott Schneckloth of Denison; four grandchildren, Tatum McGinn and her husband, Aric of Manilla, Shannon Schneckloth, Jared Schneckloth, Dylan Schneckloth and their mother, Lori Schneckloth all of Denison; and one great-granddaughter, Taryn McGinn of Manilla.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, June 13, 2003 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Thomas Buzbee officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Nishnabotna Cemetery in Manilla, Iowa. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "I'm But a Stranger Here", "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and "I Know That My Redeemer Lives". Those serving as pallbearers were: Jared Schneckloth, Bruce Guyett, Denny Reiser, Doug Haase, Mark Dirks and Kevin Jahn. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at Cronk's Restaurant. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Alvern Albert Hopp (1927 - 1999)
Alvern (Skip) Albert Hopp was born July 19,1927, the son of Emil and Minnie Jahn Hopp. He died Monday, November 29, 1999 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, Iowa at the age of seventy-two.Alvern was baptized in Christ August 21, 1927 at St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak by Rev. A. Amstein, and was confirmed April 6, 1941 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hanover by Rev. Wagnor. He received his education in rural schools near his home including both St. Paul Lutheran School in Ricketts, and St. John Lutheran School in Charter Oak.
On May 21, 1950, Alvern was united in marriage to Shirley E. Riddle at St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak by Rev. Walter Schroeder. The couple made their home in Charter Oak, where they were blessed with the birth of three daughters and two sons.
Alvern worked at and later owned the Skelly Gas Station for twenty years. He was also employed at Farmland Foods from 1964 to 1965. In 1969, Alvern began driving a school bus and later became a custodian at the Charter Oak School until 1989, at which time he retired due to health reasons.
He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed spending time with his family. In his spare time, Alvern enjoyed playing cards, cooking, reading and wood working. He liked to collect and make toys and farm machinery.
Alvern was preceded in death by his parents; one son and one daughter, both at birth; one grandson, Lucas Paul Whitmore; one sister, Loraine; and two brothers, Clarence and Raymond.
He is survived by his wife Shirley; two daughters, Debra Preul and her husband Richard of Kiron; and Kimberly Kurtz and her husband Jerry of Gering, Nebraska; one son, Carman Hopp and his wife Susan of Kiron; nine grandchildren; one great-grandson; three sister-in-laws, Lydia Hopp of Denison; Maxine Nystrom of Minneapolis, Minnesota; and Joyce Dethlefs of Sioux City, Iowa; two brother-in-laws, Harry Riddle and his wife Rita of Seattle, Washington; and Clifford Riddle of Mobile, Alabama; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, December 1, 1999 at the St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. L. C. Gebhardt officiated the service and grave side rites held at the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Charter Oak. Art Beeck provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "How Great Thou Art", "Asleep in Jesus" and "Go, My Children, with My Blessing". Those serving as pallbearers were: Charles Ferguson, Donald Hopp, Otto Kunze, Edgar Kuhlmann, Gary Wellner, Dale Hopp and Marvin Dethlefs. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak was in charge of arrangements.
