Ray Pollock (1915 - 2003)
Ray Pollock was born March 18, 1915, on a small farm in the hills southwest of Denison, Iowa. His parents, Joe Pollock and Ruth Claudy Pollock, were a farmer and a schoolteacher. Ray was raised with his brothers, Charles and Joe (Tony), and sisters, Helen, Muriel and Hazel. He attended country school and one year of high school in Denison. The family survived the great depression and the drought of the thirties. As a youth, Ray attended farm sales, one of which turned into a riot. The sale was to go down in history as one of the many penny sales structured in an effort to save farms from foreclosure during the hard times of the depression. His first entry into the world of business was with his brother, Charles, when they bought a 1935 Chevy truck and entered the trucking industry. They hauled cattle to the stockyards in Omaha and coal from the coal mines near Jefferson, Iowa.
In 1938, he met and married Dorothy Petersen. During their courtship, they attended dances where Lawrence Welk and his band played. His wife, Dorothy, said that even though he attended dances, he did not like to dance. They started their married life as tenant farmers moving from farms near Denison, Manilla, Schleswig and Vail. In 1955, they purchased 40 acres of land near Vail and have lived there ever since. The couple had two sons, Robert and Glenn. He farmed with horses and used them until 1943 when he found his team dead, struck by lightning. He purchased a used Farmall F20 tractor that was still in his possession and operating condition at his death.
In 1993, Ray, his tractor and dog, Reggie, were featured in the April edition of The American Farm Tractor. On the farm near Vail he raised purebred Hampshire hogs, ran a small trucking business and bought and sold horses. His trading of horses sent him as far as the state of Maine, where he delivered a semi-trailer load of workhorses to haul logs from the forest of that northeastern state. When he retired from farming, he was still using the old style, now new style, of farming, rotating crops and using natural fertilizer.
In his later years, he helped his son, Robert, with his recycling business. His pleasure in life was fishing. On his last fishing trip, he caught his biggest fish ever, a 30 inch catfish. He enjoyed meeting and talking to friends, among whom his quiet sense of humor always made him welcome. He was interested in who you were, whom you were related to and where you lived. His pickup truck gave him pleasure by allowing him to tour the countryside, keeping an eye on the crops and livestock throughout the area.
He was born, lived and will be buried in Crawford County, Iowa. He worked hard all his life as a farmer, but his hardest work was done in the last year of his life. He suffered through four surgeries and many months in hospitals and nursing homes.
Ray died Saturday evening, September 20, 2003 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll, Iowa. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 88 years, 6 months and 2 days. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Denison.
Including his parents, Ray was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Pollock and two sisters, Muriel Brodersen and Hazel Voss.
Those remaining to cherish his memory include his wife of nearly 65 years, Dorothy Pollock of Vail, two sons, Robert Pollock and wife, Mary of Denison and Glenn Pollock of Omaha, Nebraska, two granddaughters Lori and husband Steve Nelson of Harlan, Iowa and the Rev. Lanette Plambeck of Sioux City, Iowa, four great-grandchildren, Brianna, Brooke and Brandon Nelson of Harlan and Meghan Plambeck of Sioux City, one brother, Joe (Tony) Pollock and wife, Alyce of Forest Grove, Oregon, one sister, Helen Powell of Denison, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was an ordinary man to many; but to the people who knew him he was far from ordinary. I do not know who said it, "No man buries his father without saying I wish I had known him better." We all wish we had known him better. Rest in peace, Ray.
