Elmer Herbert Schluter (1912 - 1969)

Funeral services were held Thursday, May 15 in the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig for Elmer H Schluter, with Rev. F.A. Wiese officiating. Mrs. Ray Schmidt was the organist. The choir sang "Be Still My Soul" and the congregation sang "Savior I Follow On."

Elmer Herbert Schluter, son of Henry Schluter and his wife Elise Wollenberg was born in Sac County on May 19th, 1912 and died at his home, 4 miles east of Schleswig on May 12, 1969.

He was married to Leona Cook on January 1, 1936 by Pastor Frehse of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. The couple lived in the Early and Westside communities and for the past 26 years on a farm 4 miles east of Schleswig. He was baptized at the Wheatland Presbyterian Church, confirmed by Pastor Strelow at the Immanuel Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his widow Leona; four children, Shirley, wife of Glenn Ehlers of Arcadia, Bonnie wife of Fred Wutzke of Denison, Norman of Odebolt, and Marlene of Kansas City, Missouri, and seven grandchildren. The following brothers and sisters; Emil of Wall Lake, Anna Kroeger of Carroll, Katherine Garrells from Long Beach, California, Lillian Schaeffer of Ida Grove, Henrietta Holmes of California, George of Arion, Edward of Ida Grove, Mayme Karstens of Nemaha. He attained to 56 years, 11 months and 24 days.

The pallbearers were Vern Kruse, Art Lafrentz, Frank Sailer, Edlef Jurgensen, Harold Lafrentz and Valgene Hennings. Interment was in the Morgan Cemetery.

Elmer Fred Stockfleth (1913 - 1971)

Funeral services for Elmer Stockfleth were held Tuesday, February 16, 1971 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig with Rev. F.A. Wiese officiating. Mrs. Ray Schmidt was the organist. The choir sang "Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me" and the congregation sang "There is an hour of peaceful Rest".

Elmer Fred Stockfleth, son of Fred Stockfleth and his wife Alvina Miller, was born in Woodbury County on August 22, 1913. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Ute.

On February 26, 1944 he was married to Edna Gran from Soldier, Iowa. After marriage the couple farmed in the Mapleton area. In 1948 they moved to the Schleswig community where they rented and some years ago, bought the farm which is now the home place.

He is survived by his wife, Edna of Schleswig; two sons Dale of Chicago, Illinois and Roger at home; two sisters Mrs. Mabel Hollenbeck and Doris, wife of Frank Sorenson, both of Sioux City; three brothers Harold of Mapleton, Alvin of Schleswig and Ernest of Kingsley. He was preceded in death by four brothers. He attained to 57 years, 5 months and 22 days.

Pallbearers were Edwin Rusch, Fred Jacobs, Elmer Reiner, Wm. Aldag, Ernie Reisson, and Bruce Hamemann. Interment was in the Ute Cemetery.

Emily Erma (Henningsen ) Schurke (1919 - 1974)

Emily Erma Schurke, daughter of John and Bertha Henningsen was born on a farm in Crawford County October 17, 1919 and died at her home near Deloit, Sunday, May 20, 1974 at the age of 54.

Mrs. Schurke was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She attended rural schools. In 1941 she married Alvin Schurke of Deloit. They had seven sons and one daughter. They made their home on the farm near Deloit.

She was preceded in death by her father, John Henningsen and one son, Byron.

Survivors include her husband Alvern, Her mother Mrs. Bertha Henningsen, of Denison, one daughter Karen, six sons, Kenneth, Allen, and Keith of Denison, Ricky, Jerry, and Mark all of home, three grandchildren, four brothers Walter, Milroy, Harold and Henry all of Denison, three sisters Mrs. Rudolph (Mildred) Heide, Mrs. Harry (Irene) Sachau and Mrs. Bernice Nihsen, all of Denison.

Funeral services were held at the Zion Lutheran Church, Denison on Wednesday, May 22, 1974. Rev. Vernon Dorn officiated. Burial was at the Crawford Heights Memory Garden. Huebner Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Emma A. (Thomsen) Petersen (1908 - 1981)

Emma A. Petersen was born on October 27, 1908 at White Lake, South Dakota, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Nathan Thomsen. She died September 17, 1981 at University Hospitals in Iowa City, Iowa at the age of 72.

Emma came to Iowa at a very early age when her family moved to Crawford County. She made her home on a farm north of Dow City attending the rural schools near her home.

On January 18, 1928, Emma was united in marriage to Hans Petersen at Denison. Together they made their first home in Dow City. Later they moved to Denison where they made their home for eight years before returning to Dow City. In 1957 they moved to Schleswig, where they have since continued to make their home. In 1977, Emma spent a year working as a house parent for the Sheltered Workshop in Denison.

Emma was a life time member of the United Methodist Church in Dow City. She was also a member of the Rebekah Lodge.

In addition to her parents, Emma was preceded in death by two sisters.
Survivors include her husband Hans of Schleswig, two sons Robert of Omaha and Donald, of Harlan and one daughter, Audrey, Mrs. Jack Lambert of Sioux City. Also, by eight grandchildren, one great granddaughter, 15 foster grandchildren, two brothers, Peter Thomsen of Denison and Thomas Thomsen of Dow City and two sisters, Mrs. Dora Strickland of Omaha and Bertha (Mrs. Charles) Newland of Denison.

Funeral services were held September 19, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Denison officiated at the service. Pallbearers were Beryl Garrett, Alan Garrett, Jack Garrett, Arlen Peterson, Doug Peterson, Glenn Peterson and Gary Newland. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Erhard Donald Frederick Krohnke (1907 - 1971)

Erhard Donald Frederick Krohnke born January 8, 1907 at Ricketts, died Tuesday, November 16, 1971 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital at the age of 64 years, 10 months and 8 days. He was the son of George Krohnke and Anna A. Tech Krohnke.

He was baptized in Charter Oak Lutheran Church and as a young man worked on farms around Schleswig.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Jurgen, who died in action in 1944 in World War II, Sister Doris and stepmother Bessie Krohnke.

Survivors include Irene, Mrs. Wilbert Johansen, Schleswig; Violet, Mrs. Albert Grell, Ricketts; Walter A. Krohnke of Sioux City; Everett Krohnke, Canada; step brother Cecil Phillips, Soldier and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Friday, November 19, 1971 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison with Rev. Harry L. Strong officiating. Interment was in Morgan Township Cemetery, Schleswig with the following pallbearers, Deane Grell, Lyle Grell, Dr. Kenneth Johannsen, Roger Johannsen, Howard Krohnke and Walter Steckleberg.

Erna (Matzen) Detlefsen (1913 - 1980)

Erna Detlefsen was born August 9, 1913, the daughter of Heinrich and Anna Matzen in Norderbrarup, Schleswig, Holstein, Germany. As a young girl she was confirmed into the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Germany. After graduating from high school she furthered her education attending an all-girls vocational school where she learned home economics and nursing.

Upon the end of her schooling, Erma was employed at the hospital in Kapelln, Germany for one and one-half years. It was there she met Hans Detlefsen, her husband to be, who at the time was a chauffeur for his brother in law, Dr. Brown. Hans came to America first and then invited Erna and her parents to come over for a visit. It was while her parents were here that Erna was united in marriage with Hans Detlefsen July 12, 1937 at Schleswig, Iowa.

They went back to Germany for the honeymoon and made their home there. Erna and Hans helped her parents in the seed and nursery business. They also had a dairy farm and a special artificial breeding station of dairy cattle for Schleswig, Holstein, Germany. It was there that Erna gave birth to a daughter, Erika, on July 3, 1942 and on July 27, 1943; she gave birth to a son, Guenter.

After World War II, Hans preceded his family to the United States of America and Erna and their two children were admitted to America on January 24, 1948. They made their home in Schleswig, Iowa and after Erna received her citizenship at Sioux City, Iowa, on March 28, 1950, they bought a house in Schleswig where she has since resided.

Erna was active with her husband in caring for their beautiful gardens and home which she loved so much. She also helped Hans manage their two apartment houses in Denison.

Erna died Sunday, April 20, 1980, at Horn Memorial Hospital in the Ida Grove, Iowa, following a long illness. At the time of her death she had attained the age of 66 years, 8 months, and 11 days. Erna was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her husband, Hans of Schleswig, her daughter Erika and husband Robert Ragsdell of Millington, Tennessee and Scott and Brad Detlefsen of Schleswig.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 pm Wednesday, April 23, 1980, at the Maxwell Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa with the Rev. Gary Clark officiating. Comfort in music was provided by Henry Henningsen as soloist and Mrs. Fred Rabe as organist. Casket bearers included Rovanis Preul, Richard, Preul, Gary Preul, Howard Christiansen, Jeffery Ragsdell and Scott Detlefsen. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery at Schleswig, Iowa.

Ernest Schwidder (1904 - 1972)

Announcement has been received of the death of Pastor Ernest Schwidder of Seattle, Washington, where he was serving as assistant pastor of the Trinity Lutheran Church of Seattle. He died on Thursday May 18th (1972) after a short illness.

Pastor Schwidder served Immanuel Lutheran Church of Schleswig from 1929 to 1942. Pastor Schwidder served Immanuel very capably in the change-over period in the history of Immanuel. The problems at that time were the change-overs from the German to the English language and the years of the depression followed by the drought. During his years of service, Immanuel experienced a substantial growth in membership.

While at Schleswig, the Schwidder had two children: Lucille, now Mrs. H. Kruse of Portland, Oregon and Ernst Carl who is an ecclesiastical designer and artist. His wife Florence died a number of years ago. Pastor Schwidder was born at Oelwein, Iowa on October 30, 1904. He is survived by his present wife, Opal.

Esther (Eggen) Braase (1903 - 1961)

Funeral services for Mrs. Herbert Braase were held Saturday at the United Church of Christ (E & R). A quartet composed of Mrs. Edwin Jepsen, Mrs. B.J. Behrmann, Mrs. Ernie Grell and Mrs. Harlan Buffum sang, "Jesus Savior Pilot Me" and "Heaven is My Home". They were accompanied on the organ by Mrs. John H. Evers; Rev. Walter Baumgartner read the following obituary:

Mrs. Herbert Braase nee Esther Eggen was born April 27, 1903. She was baptized in the Lutheran church, Charter Oak, Iowa on June 20, 1903 by the Rev. Amstein. On the first day of April 1916 she was confirmed by the Rev. Reuben from Mapleton, Iowa. Esther attended the Lutheran parochial public school, the public school at Soldier and Mapleton.

In 1922 she was married to Herbert Braase. To this union one son was born. Mr. and Mrs. Braase lived near Schleswig most of their lives, Mr. Braase being in the oil business. Mr. Braase was a devoted member of the local United Church of Christ, formerly known as the Evangelical Church. She was well liked and a devoted mother and grandmother.

Mrs. Braase seemed to be in excellent health until shortly before Christmas. An exploratory operation revealed that cancer was so far advanced that only a miracle could restore health. She died Thursday morning at 5:15 am. During the last few weeks she had at her bedside Mindy Kuhn, a beloved nurse.

Surviving are her grief-stricken husband, Herbert, one son and daughter in law, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Braase, three grandchildren, Colleen, Darla, and Jena; Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Eggen of Denison; three sisters and one brother; Heide, Mrs. Peterson of Charter Oak; Florence, Mrs. Roland Paulsen of Galva; Harold Eggen of Ute, Helen, Mrs. Ben Kroll of Sioux City and one sister in law, Mrs. Roland Struck.

Burial was made in the Morgan Cemetery. The pallbearers were; Herbert Teut, Leonard Teut, Leonard Teut, Gordon Nahnsen, George Else, Albert Paulsen and Raymond Bahnsen.

Everett Henry Gronau (1910 - 1973)

Gronau, Everett Henry of rural Kiron, Iowa was born on May 25, 1910 in Ida County. His parents were Fred Gronau and Alvena nee Schurke.

He was baptized at St. John's Lutheran Church in Stockholm Township and confirmed at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison by Pastor Frese. He was married May 30, 1948 to Bernice Bramstedt at St. John's Lutheran Church in Stockholm Township by Rev. Winter. All of their married life they lived northwest of Kiron.

The couple was active in church affairs. Mr. Gronau was a member of the voters assembly and recently concluded three years of service as a trustee of the congregation while his wife has served the congregation as an organist for a number of years.

He died Monday morning March 26, 1973 of a heart attack at his home at the age of 62 years, 10 months and one day.

Funeral services were held at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig on Wednesday, March 28 at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor F. A. Weiss officiating. Mrs. Ray Schmidt was the organist. The choir sang "Jesus Lead Thou On" and the congregation sang "Just as I Am." Interment was in the Morgan Township Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers: Herbert Baker, Vernis Giermann, Vernie and Donald Ullrich. Huebner Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

James Joseph Keating (1915 - 1978)

James Joseph Keating was born Aug. 14, 1915 near Denison, the son of James and Nora Keating. He died Jan. 23, 1978 at Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, after a long illness at the age of 62.

He was raised on the family farm in Hanover Township and received his formal education in the rural schools. For a period of time before his marriage he farmed with his father.

On Jan. 31, 1940 he was united in marriage to Marie Gremonprez at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. Together they made their home on the farm where James was raised. They continued to live there all of James' working career. James was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and served more than 30 years as a Director on the Board. He was a past member of the Knights of Columbus.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one daughter in infancy, one sister, Loretta and one brother in infancy.

Survivors include, his wife Marie of rural Denison, two daughters, Pat, Mrs. Richard Sullivan of Soldier, and Margene, Mrs. Jim Havick, Avoca, and five grandchildren. Also by six sisters, Irene, Mrs. Oscar Christensen of Vail; Marie, Mrs. Louie Evers of Soldier; Lucille, Mrs. Arnold Gallagher of Manilla; Marg, Mrs. Gary Malams of Clinton; Kay, Mrs. Louie Riddle of Carroll and Rita, Mrs. Mark Huebner of Clinton and one brother, Leo Keating of Denison.

Funeral services were held Jan. 25, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. Burial was in St. Rose of Lima Cemetery. Officiating at the Mass and graveside rites were Father Lloyd W. White, Father Gene Walding, Father Harold Cooper and Deacon Bob Sullivan. Pallbearers included, Bob Christensen, Kevin Gallagher, Mike Riddle, Darryl Petersen, Mark Sharrar and Richard Keating. Honorary pallbearers were Walter Rupp, Lloyd Messenger, Lawrence Groen, Vernon Schroeder, Art Boettger and Clarence Schillerberg. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Jane E. (Maas) Pickel (1910 - 1999)

Jane E. Pickel was born July 1, 1910, the daughter of August and Della Clubine Maas. She died at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa, Tuesday, May 4, 1999 at the age of eighty-eight.

Jane was born on a farm five miles northwest of Danbury, Iowa. She was baptized in Christ and confirmed on June 6, 1936 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig, Iowa. After completing her education, Jane helped her parents at home and later worked in the Herman Jepsen home.

On September 14, 1929, Jane was united in marriage to Peter Pickel at the Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Parsonage in Schleswig, Iowa. The couple farmed in the Schleswig area before moving to Schleswig in 1961. After moving to Schleswig, Jane began cooking at the Schleswig School until retiring in 1982. Jane and Peter were caretakers of the Morgan Cemetery for twelve years, and caretakers of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig for seventeen years.

Jane was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig and their Ladies Aid. She was a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother. She loved flowers and doing yard work, raising vegetables and canning. Jane also enjoyed butchering chickens and selling them.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Peter on April 30, 1998, one great-grandson, three brothers, Elmer, Harm and LeRoy Maas. Survivors include three sons, Bernhard Pickel and his wife, Betty of Mapleton; Richard Pickel and his wife, Lois of Schleswig; Wilbert Pickel and his wife, Betty of Sac City; four daughters, Evelyn Stamm and her husband, Eugene of Omaha; Rubie Kastner and her husband, Rawlo of Schleswig; Beverly Rix and her husband, Allen of Manning; Dorothy Rix and her husband, Larry of Des Moines; nineteen grandchildren; thirty-three great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Glenn Maas of Mapleton; many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, May 7, 1999 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Merle Mahnken officiated the service and graveside rites held at the Morgan Cemetery. Pre-service music "What A Friend We Have In Jesus," "I Look To The Shepherd" and "Amazing Grace" were provided by her daughter Rubie Kastner. Marlene Hight accompanied the congregation with "Jesus Savior Pilot Me" and "Jesus Still Lead On." The special service music was "How Great Thou Art" and "Sheltered In The Arms Of God," also performed by Rubie Kastner. Pallbearers were grandsons, Dennis Stamm, David Stamm, Glenn Pickel, Scott Rix, Todd Rix, Ross Kastner, Doug Pickel and Rick Pickel. Honorary pallbearers were granddaughters Shelly Carlson, Tammy Johnson, Rachel Bruns, Donna Shaw, Lori Kragel, Debbie Strohm, Regina Klahn, Traci Ewoldt, Diann Pickel, Sara Vote and Terri Rosener. Everyone was invited for lunch, served by the Ladies Aid. Huebner Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Jerry Meeves (1913 - 1996)

Jerry Meeves was born June 13, 1913, the son of Henry and Mathilde Ohl Meeves. He died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa on Monday, June 17, 1996 at the age of eighty-three.

Jerry was born in Boyer Township, Crawford County, Iowa near Dunlap and was baptized in Christ and later confirmed on April 14, 1928. He received his education in a rural school near his home and in 1928 he moved with his family to Denison and continued his education at the Denison Community School.

On December 16, 1943, Jerry was united in marriage to Mathilda Mesenbrink Schiernbeck at Council Bluffs, Iowa. Jerry was employed at Boynes Trucking in Denison, Kortman Implement in Charter Oak and subsequently Farmland Foods Inc.

Jerry was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. He was a kind and loving person who was always willing to help others. He enjoyed taking care of lawns, gardening and was especially fond of John Deere Tractors.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, three brothers, Henry, Charlie and Edward Meeves, one sister, Marie Herrig, one step-son, Alvin Smith and special friend and companion, Elsie Timm. Survivors include one sister, Agnes Christiansen of the Dunlap Care Center, one sister-in-law, Velma Meeves of Dunlap, one aunt, Emma Ohl of Dunlap; Orval and Kay Timm and family, and five step-granddaughters, Donna Holmer, Linda Gober, Sheila Smith; Sheri Hoard and Terry Clark.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m., Thursday, June 20, 1996 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Pastor Kurt Kaiser and Vicar Andrew Carlson officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Larry Boeck singing "Nearer, My God, to Thee" and "Amazing Grace" and congregational hymn "How Great Thou Art." Honorary pallbearers were Kevin and Mary Bohm and Henry and Marie Willer.

Johannes Carl Wilken (1918 - 2004)

Johannes Carl Wilken was born June 5, 1918, the son of Matthaeus and Wilhelmine Wohlert Wilken. He died Saturday, July 10, 2004 at Jennie Edmundson Memorial Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa at the age of eighty-six.

He was born on a farm in Morgan Township, near Schleswig, Iowa where he lived with his parents. He was baptized July 24, 1918 and confirmed in 1934 by Rev. Kielhorn. He received his education in rural Morgan No. 5. After completing his education, Johannes helped his family on the farm. In 1949, Johannes and his brother and sister started farming on the Otto Hollander farm. In 1953, they moved to the Wohlert farm until retiring to Schleswig in 1983.

Johannes was a faithful member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. He was a hard worker, loved children and had a heart of gold. In 1980, Johannes, Nick and Margaret were able to vacation in Hawaii, which the three of them enjoyed very much.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Frederick, who died in infancy; and his sister, Margaret in 1995. He is survived by his brother, Nick Wilken of Schleswig; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 13, 2004 at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Chris Burtnett officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Organist, Tammy Neubauer provided the music for congregational hymns "How Great Thou Art" and "I'm But a Stranger Here." Those serving as pallbearers were: Michael Boettger, Robert Boettger, Mark Knudsen, David Boettger, Grant Wilken and Jeff Lehan. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch served by the Women's Guild. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of arrangements.

John F. Meggers (1914 - 1998)

John F. Meggers was born February 25, 1914, the son of John J. and Edith Zage Meggers. He died Friday, May 29, 1998 at the Dunlap Care Center, Dunlap, Iowa at the age of eighty-four.

John was born on a farm in Hanover Township, Denison, Iowa and received his education in a rural school near his home. He was baptized in Christ, October 14, 1914 at the Zion Lutheran Church, Denison, Iowa and later confirmed there on April 5, 1928. After completing his education, John worked with his dad on the Meggers family farm. In 1947, he started carpentry work in the Schleswig area, until moving to Charter Oak in 1961, when John went to work with Charley and Norman Kiepe and Herman Rosburg.

On August 22, 1978, John was united in marriage to Elonore Hargens Meggers at the Zion Lutheran Church, Denison, Iowa by the Rev. Jack Heck. The couple made their home in Charter Oak and spent many wonderful years together.

John was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak and was a very faithful Christian. He was a loving caring husband who in his leisure time enjoyed playing cards. John also loved woodworking, making gun, bath and kitchen cabinets and never really retired from the carpentry business.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Peter Meggers; three sisters, Rose Meggers, Minnie Pirwitz and Adela DeMey; two brothers-in-law, Alvin and Louis Hargens Sr.; one sister-in-law, Dorothy Henkel; three half-brothers-in-law, Walter, Ernst and William Nemitz.

Survivors include his wife, Elonore of Charter Oak; four sisters-in-law, Eva Hargens, Emma Hargens and Dena Nemitz, all of Denison; Esther Turner and her husband, Belton of Sun City, Arizona; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, June 1, 1998 at the St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. L. C. Gebhardt and Vicar Kent Pierce officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery, Schleswig, Iowa. Art Beeck provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "I Know That My Redeemer Lives" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus." Pallbearers were: Herman Rosburg, Louie Hargens Jr., Darlo Pirwitz, Paul Bockelmann, Don Leitz and Bill Hargens. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them for fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak was in charge of arrangements. The family would like to acknowledge the prayers, memorials, flowers, food and cards of sympathy, and politely thank each and everyone for their kind considerations. Rather than acknowledging each with a card of thanks, they would prefer using the money for postage as a memorial in John's name for other useful causes.

John Frahm Stapleton (1911 - 1987)

John Frahm Stapleton was born at Larchwood, Iowa July 16, 1911, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Stapleton. John attended Denison schools, graduating from Denison High in 1928. He was an active member of the Denison DeMolay. After graduation John attended Iowa State College where he belonged to the Delta Upsilon fraternity.

In 1934 he was married to Vernetta Hollaender also of Denison. Three daughters were born to this union. From 1936 to 1946 he was employed by the U.S. Army Engineers, administering real estate activities in Iowa, Missouri and Kansas. Joining the J.C. Penney Company in 1946, he supervised real estate negotiations for store locations in seven central and southwestern states from his Dallas, Tx. Office.

After retiring in 1971 John was employed as a real estate consultant to various retail organizations. Following a lengthy illness, John died at Baylor University Hospital in Dallas, Tx. on May 13, 1987. Interment was in the family crypt at Restland Cemetery.

John was preceded in death by his wife Vernetta and his mother. Surviving are three daughters, Kay (Mrs. N. Rutherford) Sao Paulo, Brazil, Viky (Mrs. Alex Caudell) Oklahoma City, Ok., Terri (Mrs. Dennis Robinson) Dallas, Tx.; two brothers, Paul and James, Los Angeles, Calif.; and two sisters, LaVonne and Peggy, Los Angeles, Calif.

John Henry Carstens (1916 - 2004)

John Henry Carstens, son of Herman Edward Carstens and Anna Nee Woock Carstens was born on June l, 1916 in Crawford County, Iowa and died June 6, 2004 at the Bayard Care Center in Bayard, Iowa at the age of 88 years and 5 days.

John grew up in the Crawford County, Ida Grove, Iowa area and attended a county school there until the 8th grade. On June l, 1939, he was united in married to Mildred Boger. They were the parents of five children, Judy, Jon A., Jack, Jeff and Juhl. They made their home in the Denison area where John farmed until moving to the Yale-Bagley area.

John worked in the stockyard for Oscar Mayer for twenty years until his retirement in 1976. John enjoyed working with livestock and being outside. He often helped haul livestock in his pick-up truck for those who had no truck. John also enjoyed dancing, in his earlier days, playing cards and was also good at carpentry.

John was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mildred; two brothers, Les and an infant brother Darrell. He is survived by one daughter, Judy Bly of Waterloo, Iowa; four sons, Jon A. and Jack, both of Bagley, Juhl of Yale, Jeff and his wife Julie of Guthrie Center; one brother, Verdene Carstens and his wife Mary Jean of Aurora, Colorado; one brother-in-law, Jerry Boger; two sisters-in-law, Arlene Carstens and Audrey Steffen; 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, many other relatives and many, many friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on June 10, 2004 at the Hastings Funeral Home in Jefferson, Iowa. Pastor Larry Monthei of Hope United Methodist Parish in Bagley offered words of hope. Marilyn Hoskinson provided the music for congregational hymns, "Rock of Ages" and "One Day at a Time." Those serving as honorary casket bearers were Merle Chaloupka, Lauren Cabelka, Jerry Barcus, Jake England, Howard Accola and Eddie McCartney. Casket bearers were Jon Carstens, Jeff Carstens, Jack Carstens, Juhl Carstens, Brian Rath and Barry Rath. Interment was held in the Dodge Township Cemetery in Bagley, Iowa. The Hastings Funeral Home in Jefferson was in charge of the arrangements.

John Henry Gosch (1919 - 1988)

John Henry Gosch was born on August 1, 1919, near Wall Lake, Iowa, the son of Edward and Adela Ericksen Gosch. He died on March 30, 1988, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, at the age of 68 years.

John received his early childhood education in a rural school in Sac County. He was baptized on January 19, 1921, in the Presbyterian Church in Wall Lake. He was confirmed at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig on May 16, 1948.

On February 13, 1944, John and Phyllis Ernst of Schleswig were united in marriage at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Grant Township, Ida County, Iowa. To this union four children were born. After marriage they made their home on various farms in the Schleswig area, moving to a farm near Denison in 1956, where they continued to make their home. He devoted his entire adult life to farming. He was a votingĀ· member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig and had served as a trustee.

John was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Howard John Gosch in 1952, and one grandson, Timothy Gosch in 1982.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis of Denison; one son, Marc Gosch and his wife Sharon of Denison; two daughters, Cynthia Gosch of Indianola, Iowa, and Janet and her husband Brad Roecker of Omaha, Nebraska; five grandchildren; one sister, Vera Moore of Tucson, Arizona; and two brothers, Eugene Gosch and his wife Mary of Ida Grove and Wayne Gosch and his wife Arlene of Arthur.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 2, 1988, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. Pastor Kenneth Hessel officiated at the services and graveside rites at the Grant Township Cemetery, Ida County. Mrs. Marlene Hight served as organist for congregational singing "Jesus Christ is Risen Today" and "I Know That My Redeemer Lives." ServingĀ· as pallbearers were Melvin Petersen, Harry Petersen, Virgil Schmidt, Orville Hansen, Norman Friedrichsen and Lorenz Schultz.

John Henry Maack (1910 - 1978)

John Henry Maack was born on May 6, 1910 at Hanover Township, Crawford County, the son of John and Mary Maack. He died on Tuesday, May 23, 1978 at Methodist Hospital, at Omaha, Nebr., at the age of 68. John was raised in Hanover Township. He was baptized and later confirmed in the Lutheran Faith, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Charter Oak.

On Dec. 19, 1945 he was united in marriage to Cecil Smith at Denison. Together they made their home on a farm south of Denison for eight years moving to a farm south of Vail, where they lived for thirteen years. Later they owned and operated the C and J Cafe in Manilla for a number of years before working for the County Home near Denison. John retired in 1976 and has since continued to make his home in Manilla.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by one infant daughter, Judy, two grandchildren, two brothers, and one sister.

Survivors include, his wife Cecil of Manilla; three daughters, Mary, Mrs. Ronald Rasmussen of Manilla, Jane, Mrs. Thomas Murphy of San Diego, Calif., and Norma, Mrs. Dennis Wamboldt of Denver, Colo. Also by seven grandchildren, two brothers, Walter and George of Denison, and two sisters, Ella, Mrs. Emil Meggers of Denison and Meta, Mrs. Falter Jepsen of Barnum.

Funeral services were held on Friday, May 26, 1978 at 2 p.m. at the Huebner Funeral Home, Denison. Burial was in the St. Rose of Lima Cemetery. The Rev. Victory O. Hoyer officiated at the services. Pallbearers included: Willis Maack, Robert Jepsen, Wayne Jepsen, Merlin Maack, Charles Meyer and Lynnel Meyer.

John Henry Moeller (1914 - 1996)

John Henry Moeller was born October 25, 1914, the son of John D. and Frieda Jensen Moeller. He died Sunday, February 4, 1996 at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison at the age of eighty-one.

John grew up on the family farm in Otter Creek Township near Schleswig. He began his early education in a rural school near his home and continued his education in the Schleswig Community High School graduating there with the class of 1932. He was baptized in Christ on March 31, 1928 at the Friedens Evangelical Reformed Church and confirmed there on March 29, 1931.

On June 3, 1945, John was united in marriage to Bernice Else at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grant Township, Ida Grove, Iowa. The couple settled on the family farm near Schleswig and remained there until retiring in 1976 when the couple moved to Schleswig. On April 14, 1946 John became a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, until the church closed in 1969, at which time the couple became members of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. In June of 1995, the couple celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary.

In his early days of school, John was active in various 4-H programs and participated in the International Cattle Show, held in Chicago, for which he received an award. More recent years found him enjoying his leisure time watching sports and various other programs on TV. Additionally, he challenged his mind with word games that were published in the newspaper.

John was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, George and Hugo and one sister, Louise Hinrichsen. Survivors include his wife, Bernice of Schleswig; one sister, Jessie Jaacks of Denison; two sisters-in-law, Maxine Gronau of Denison; and Eileen Ostermann and her husband, Bob of Holstein.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, February 7, 1996 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Patrick Sparling officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "Just as I Am, Without One Plea," "The Lord's My Shepherd, I'll Not Want" and "I Know That My Redeemer Lives." Those serving as pallbearers were: Russell Ostermann, Palmer Moeller, Douglas Gronau, Dale Gronau, Andrew Flagge and Jon Jaacks. The family invited everyone in at attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of arrangements.

Hans Henry Thun (1902 - 1976)

Hans Henry Thun, son of Johannes and Wiebke Boyens Thun, was born on a farm in Morgan Township August 23, 1902 and died Friday, November 5, 1976 at Eventide Nursing Home in Denison, at the age of 74 years, 2 months and 13 days.

Mr. Thun was raised on a farm in Hanover Township. He attended rural schools. He was baptized in infancy by Pastor Almsted in St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak and confirmed in Zion Lutheran Church, Denison.

He continued to farm until moving to Charter Oak in 1938 where he was employed in the implement business until retiring in 1970. Due to ill health, he has made his home at Eventide Nursing Home for the past 10 months.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include five sisters, Mrs. Hilda Schoenfeld of Charter Oak, Anna, Mrs. Carl Hiller of Charter Oak, Mrs. Martha Woebke, Charter Oak, Mrs. Lydia Eggert, Denison, Edna, Mrs. Arthur Naab of Charter Oak, four brothers, August, of Ricketts, Herman and Henry of Schleswig, and Louie of Charter Oak, several other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Monday, August 8 at 1:30 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, Charter Oak with Pastor Henry Friedrich officiating. Mrs. Paul Clausen served as organist and the St. John's Women's Choir sang "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" and "Heaven Is My Home." Pallbearers were John Kortman, LaVern Freerking, Arnold Schmidt, William Kiem, John Meggers and Hans Schau. Interment was made in Morgan Township Cemetery. Huebner Funeral Home was in charge of services.

Hans Petersen (1908 - 1983)

Hans Petersen was born on August 15, 1908, at Schleswig Holstein, Germany, the son of Herman and Anna Holst Petersen. He died on Saturday evening, October 29, 1983, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa, at the age of 75.

Hans was raised and educated in Germany. In 1925 at the age of seventeen, he moved to the United States, making his home in the Schleswig community. He worked as apprentice for the Peter Jepsen Construction Company.

On December 1, 1933, Hans was united in marriage to Frieda Engleking in Schleswig. Together they made their home in the Schleswig community. Hans established the Petersen Construction Company in 1944. He remained active in business all of his life. For several years he served on the Schleswig City Council.

Hans was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife in June of 1963. Survivors include one son, Carlton of Schleswig, two daughters, Lee Ann Petersen and Joleen Petersen both of Omaha and by two grandchildren, Kimberly and Kurt. Also surviving is one brother and two sisters all of Germany.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, November 1, 1983, at 10:30 a.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. The Rev. Richard Nelson officiated at the services. Mrs. Leroy Hight served as organist with Immanuel Lutheran Choir singing. Hymns for the services included "Rock of Ages" and "How Great Thou Art". Serving as pallbearers were Eldred Gronau, Herbert Miller, Vernis Aldag, Kevin Lafrentz, Ray Miller and DeWayne Sonksen.

Hans Pickel (1904 - 1981)

Hans Pickel was born May 22, 1904, in Germany, the son of Peter and Anna Grauman Pickel. He was raised and received his education in Germany. After his schooling Hans learned the blacksmith trade. At the age of 21, Hans came to America and moved to the Charter Oak and Schleswig area.

On Jan. 22, 1932, Hans was united in marriage to Amanda Jepsen at Sioux City. They made their home on a farm near Schleswig and Hans operated a blacksmith shop at his home. In 1965, they retired and moved to Denison where he had since resided.

Hans had a devout love for children and for many years donated countless hours caring for the Little League Ball Diamonds in Denison. Four weeks ago Hans entered the Bishop Clarkson Memorial Hospital in Omaha. He passed away Aug. 17 (1981) at the hospital at the age of 77 years, two months and 25 days.

Hans was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Walter, one daughter, three brothers, Arthur, Henry and Arnold Pickel, and two sisters, Meta and Marie.

He is survived by his wife, Amanda of Denison, two daughters, Mrs. Leslie (Cindy) Campbell of Dumas, Tex., and Mrs. Joseph (Mary) Busch of Silverdale, Wash., three grandchildren, two brothers, Peter Pickel of Schleswig and Bernhard Pickel of Germany, and two sisters, Elsie and Anna, both of Germany and Jerry Owings of Sioux City.

Funeral services were held Aug. 19 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison with Kurt Kaiser, D.C.E. officiating. Pallbearers were Bernhard Pickel, Wilbert Pickel, Edwin Jepsen, Vernon Jepsen, Vernon Kuehnhold and Don Kuehnhold. Interment was in the Morgan Cemetery at Schleswig. Maxwell Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Hans Peter Kroeger (1884 - 1964)

Funeral services for Hans Peter Kroeger were held Wednesday, June 10, 1964, at the United Church of Christ (E & R). Mrs Ray Marten and Mrs Ernie Grell sang "In the Garden" and "Just as I am" accompanied on the organ by Mrs Broder Petersen. Rev Walter Baumgartner read the following obituary:

Hans Peter Kroeger son of Peter J Kroeger and his wife Nancy, nee Boysen, was born in Morgan Township, Crawford County, Iowa, August 5, 1884. He was baptized in infancy, and later united with the Lutheran Church in Hanover township. He spent most of his life on the farm west of Schleswig. He attended the rural school and later enrolled in the Business College at Denison, Iowa.

On June 26, 1926, he was united in marriage with Elma Kruse. To this union two children were born, Lois and Eugene. Mr and Mrs Kroeger spent most of their lives on the farm, until retirement. In 1944 they moved to the town of Schleswig.

Mr Kroeger was in fair health most of the time, and enjoyed a quiet retired life. A few days ago, he became ill with pneumonia. He was rushed to the Crawford County Memorial Hospital where he died Sunday evening, June 7, 1964. He attained the age of 79 years, ten months and two days.

Surviving are: his wife, Elma, at Schleswig; two children, Lois, Mrs Clarence Wiese of Schleswig and Eugene of Mason City, Ia; two brothers, Wm of Ricketts and Hugo of Longmont, Colo; two sisters, Mrs Julia Grill and Mrs Alvena Lohse both of Schleswig; one son-in-law, Clarence Wiese; and two grandchildren, Marcia and Gail Wiese, and other relatives and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Elsie.

Burial was made in the Morgan Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Donald Kroeger, Earl Schwingdorf, Werthus P Grell, Edwin Schmadeke, Johannes Breckling, and Herman Mundt.

Harry Schultz (1897 - 1965)

Funeral services for Harry Schultz, who died on February 23rd at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital after a lingering illness, were held at the United Church of Christ on Friday, Feb. 26, 1965. Mrs Ernie Grell and Mrs Ray Martens sang, "Nearer My God to Thee", and "Lead Kindly Light." They were accompanied on the organ by Mrs Broder Petersen. Rev R. J. Ratzlaff officiated.

Harry Schultz, son of Fred Schultz and Lena Groth was born on February 12, 1897 in Schleswig. He was a life time resident of the Schleswig community, farming a mile west of town. He attained the age of 68 years and 11 days.

He is survived by one sister, Mrs Frank Peters, and a half-brother, Harry Suckstorf. Two nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by a half-sister, Maggie Suckstorf in December of 1964 and a half-brother, John Suckstorf.

Burial was made in the Morgan cemetery. The pallbearers were: Ralph Struck, Hugo Reimer, Hans Wellendorf, Milton Wassgren, Burness Kastner and Alvin Stockfleth.

Helena (Wohlert) Schwartz (1892 - 1973)

Mrs. John Schwartz, 81, of Denison, died November 19, 1973, at a Denison rest home. Services were at 2 p.m. November 21, 1973, at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison with the Rev. R.J. Ratzlaff officiating. Burial was in Morgan Township Cemetery near Schleswig.

Mrs. Schwartz, the former Helena Wohlert, was born April 3, 1892, near Schleswig. She was married February 24, 1915, at Schleswig. They farmed near there. He died in 1946 and she moved into Denison.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Erlin (Caroline) Ewaldt of Harlan; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother Johannes of Ida Grove; and a sister, Mrs. Matt (Minnie) Wilken of Schleswig.

Helen Lucille (Bidlack) Cadwell (1924 - 1986)

Helen, daughter of Earl and Frances Simmerman Bidlack, was born March 4, 1924 near Manilla, Iowa. She attended country schools near her home and was graduated from Manilla High School in 1943.

On November 17, 1943 Helen was united in marriage with Hal Cadwell at Rockport, Mo. After her husband was discharged from the service they farmed around Manilla and were still residing on their farm northeast of Manilla. Helen was a member of the United Methodist Church in Manilla, the United Methodist Women; the Mary Martha Bible Study Group; the Friendly Farmer's Club; and the Denison chapter of TOPS.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, and by a brother, Roy Bidlack. Helen is survived by her husband, Hal, of Manilla; by five children: Bonnie and her husband, David Bartels, of Des Moines; Leonard Cadwell and his wife, Vicky, of Manilla; Dean Cadwell and his wife, Valerie, of Des Moines; Verne Cadwell and his wife, Denise, of Manilla; and Cindy and her husband, Dave Peterson, of Tulsa, Okla.; by 13 grandchildren: David and Nathan Bartels; Shari, Jeremy, Rodney, Nicholas, Ben, Jacob, Emily, Andrea, Laura, and Michael Cadwell; and Joshua Petersen; by one sister, Ruby, Mrs. Roy Heiman of Manilla; by an aunt, Mabel Bidlack, of Ann Arbor, Mich.; and by nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 15, 1986, at 2:00 p.m., in the United Methodist Church, Manilla. Officiating were Pastor Sushil Joseph, United Methodist Church, Manilla; and Reverend Frank Christ, First Presbyterian Church, Manilla. Organist was Barbara Agan. Vocalist was Kay Rutherford. Interment was in the Nishnabotna Cemetery. Pallbearers were Larry Cadwell, Lynn Cadwell, Paul Weible, Keith Cadwell, Roger Heiman, and Dudley Heiman. Honorary pallbearers were Bryan Cadwell, Lyle Abel, Leslie Abel, and Neil Cadwell. Ohde Funeral Home in Manilla was in charge of arrangements.

Henry Frederick Beermann (1896? - 1965)

Henry Frederick Beermann, the son of Henry Beermann, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, and Sophie (Rothermund) Beermann, was born in Heemsen. At the age of one year he came with his parents to America, settling in Crawford county, where he grew to manhood.

He was married to Olga Weller on March 1, 1916. After their marriage they resided on farms in Nisnabotny and Washington Townships until coming to live in Denison in 1949. On Nov. 8 he was taken to the Memorial hospital and died on Nov. 19 (1965) at 7 p.m.

He is survived by his widow, three sons, Walter and Edward of Denison and Harold of Defiance; four daughters: Mrs. Alma Denker of Denison; Mrs. Dorothy Christoffersen of Audubon; Mrs. Irene Boeck of Ida Grove and Mrs. Lorena Fink of Deloit; thirty grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren. Also surviving are one brother, Herman of Ireton and two sisters: Mrs. Anna Bruns and Mrs. Emma Burmeister of Denison. A son, Alvin, and two twin daughters who died in infancy, one grandson, three brothers and one sister preceded him in death.

Mr. Beermann was baptized in infancy and on March 29, 1896 was confirmed in Zion Lutheran church of Denison. He was a voting member of this church and served as a trustee for a number of years.

Funeral services were held at Zion Lutheran church on Nov. 22, with the Rev. Carl W. Schmidt officiating. Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist and selections were sung by the Lutheran Ladies choir. Interment was made in the Lutheran Cemetery. The following served as pallbearers: Donald Beermann, Robert Beermann, Ronald Beermann, Alan Boeck, Dale Christoffersen and Darlo Jensen.

Harry Gunderson (1917 - 1966)

Harry Gunderson, son of George Gunderson and Rita (Berry) Gunderson, was born in Chandler, Minn., on June 23, 1917. After the death of his parents he came to live in Crawford county, making his home with Mr. and Mrs. William Simons and then with Mr. and Mrs. John Jessen. He served with the armed forces of the Nation during World War II.

He was baptized in infancy and later confirmed in the Zion Lutheran church in Denison. His death occurred at the Crawford County Memorial hospital on Dec. 11.

His funeral service was held at the Huebner Funeral home on Dec. 13 with the Rev. Carl W. Schmidt officiating. Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist and hymns were sung by the Lutheran Ladies Choir. Interment was made in the Memorial Gardens cemetery with the following acting as bearers, Robert Haberman, Donald Rotert, Harold Stender, Arnie Moulds, Roy Stegeman and Johnnie Stender.

He was married to Lorraine Schramm who survives along with the following children, Gordon of South Sioux City, Neb., Susan, Steven and Richard of Denison; three brothers, Martin of Canada, Andrew of Oregon and Edward of South Dakota and two sisters, Mrs. Dola Simons of Worthington, Minn., and Mrs. Lindermann of Indiana.

Henry J. Bielenberg (1906 - 1972)

Funeral services were held Saturday, February 12, for H. J. Bielenberg at Moline, Kansas. He died on February 9, 1972. Services were held at the Methodist Church and burial was made in the Moline Cemetery. The pallbearers were: Bart Bielenberg, Ben Bielenberg, Don Bielenberg, Vern Hamer, Dave Ware and Jack Clarkin.

Henry J. Bielenberg was born September 19, 1906, at Schleswig. He was the eldest son of William and Mattie Bielenberg. He graduated from Schleswig High School in 1923 and from the University of Iowa. He operated a bowling alley here for many years and farmed north of town for several years. For a period of time he worked in the Matin Bomber plant in Omaha.

He married Vera Snodgrass of Moline, Kansas in August, 1946. In 1953 with his wife and daughter they moved to Aransas Pass, Texas where they operated a motel. In 1970, they sold the motel property and moved to Moline, Kansas to take care of Mrs. Bielenberg's aged father. He was a member of the Methodist Church and of the Lions Club.

Survivors include: his wife Vera, one daughter Mary Patricia Vickery of Texas, his twin brothers Bart of Schleswig and Ben of Texas.

Harold E. Justice (1914 - 1999)

Harold E., son of Ralph W. and Alta Chamberlain Justice, was born July 16, 1914, at Defiance, in Shelby County, Iowa. He graduated from Manilla High School in 1932. Following his graduation he started farming.

On August 24, 1937, he was united in marriage with Anna Marie Rasmussen in Dow City, Iowa. Three children were born to this union. They lived on a rented farm one and one-fourth miles east of Manilla, Iowa which they purchased in 1941.

In 1948 they bought the locker plant in Manilla from Jim Anderson and moved to town for six years. In 1954 they returned to the farm until 1966, when they built a home and moved back to town. Harold worked as a bookkeeper for Rasmussen Lumber Company for one year, with Farm Co-op for two years, and then as City Clerk from 1969 to 1978, when he retired.

On October 2, 1978, they moved to Bella Vista, Arkansas, returning to Iowa and settling at Orchard View in Carroll in 1989. Harold became a resident of the Carroll Health Center in 1995. Anna died on May 8, 1995.

Harold was a member of the Methodist Church in Manning. He enjoyed woodworking, playing cards, sporting events, and gardening. Harold had been in failing health for several years and died on Thursday, February 25, 1999, at the Carroll Health Center, Carroll, Iowa, at the age of 84 years, 7 months, and 9 days.

Besides his wife, Harold was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Kenneth Justice; Earl Justice; and George Justice.

He is survived by three children: Richard Justice and his wife Nedra of Henderson, NV; Sharon and her husband Dale Judson of Cherokee, IA; and Sarah and her husband Mark Lucht of Brea, CA; 6 grandchildren: Darin Justice and his wife, Jeralee, Derek Justice; Teresa and her husband David Walker; James Scott; and Matthew and Katie Lucht; two great-grandchildren: Zachary and Rebecca Walker; four brothers; Clifford Justice and his wife Frances of Irwin, IA; Russell Justice and his wife Darlene of Irwin, IA; Amos Justice and his wife Arlene of Carroll, IA; and Howard Justice and his wife Norma of Ankeny, IA; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Services were held Friday, March 12; 1999 at 10:00 A.M. at the Ohde Funeral Home in Manilla, Iowa. Reverend David Clark of First United Methodist Church in Carroll, Iowa officiated. Song selections were "How Great Thou Art" and "Amazing Grace" with Kathy McLaren as organist. Honorary casketbearers were Darin justice, Derek Justice, Teresa Walker, James Scott, Matthew Lucht and Katie Lucht. Interment was at Nishnabotna Cemetery in Manilla, Iowa. The Ohde Funeral Home in Manilla was in charge of arrangements.

Harold George Schillerberg (1916 - 1997)

Harold George Schillerberg was born November 28, 1916, the son of Herman and Augusta Tech Schillerberg. He died at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa, Monday, May 12, 1997 at the age of eighty.

Harold was born on a farm in Hanover Township, near Ricketts, Iowa, where he lived with his parents. He was baptized in Christ on December 21, 1916 at St. Paul Lutheran Church Hanover Township and later confirmed there on April 7, 1929. He received his education at a rural school near his home. After completing his education, Harold helped on the family farm and various farmers in the area.

On December 25, 1941, Harold was united in marriage to Darlyne Christiansen. The couple settled on a farm near Ricketts and were blessed with the birth of six children. The couple farmed for twenty-five years, raising hogs and dairy cows and was one of the first to use conservation terracing. While
farming, he also did his own mechanic and carpeting repairs.

After being involved in a farm accident, they owned and operated the Delux Motel in Ida Grove, Iowa for eight years. The couple retired January 1, 1974 making their home in Schleswig, until 1991 when they moved to an apartment in Denison entering the Eventide Senior Housing.

Harold was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Denison and several card clubs. He was a former member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig, where he served as an elder for two years and former member of St. Paul Lutheran, Ida Grove, and Zion, Denison. He was a very loving husband, caring father and grandfather.

In his earlier years, Harold enjoyed golfing and fishing trips with his family. In his leisure time he enjoyed reading, mysteries, the newspaper and especially westerns. He also enjoyed helping his wife, doing woodworking, making picture frames and doll beds for his family.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Clarence Schillerberg, two sisters, Milda Backhaus and Alice Aldag.

Survivors include his wife, Darlyne of Denison; five daughters, Nancy Barango of Chicago, Illinois; Lois Hofer and her husband, Rev. Paul of Aurora, Colorado; Shirley Kloes of Chicago, Illinois; Lois Hofer and her husband, Rev. Paul of Aurora, Colorado; Shirley Kloes and her husband, Tom of Menasha, Wisconsin; Susan Smillie and her , husband, Gene of Dearfield, Illinois; Alice Schillerberg and her husband, Michael Albrich of Portland, Oregon; one son, Edward Schillerberg and his wife, Peggy of Norwalk, Iowa; sixteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; one brother, Merle Schillerberg of Charter Oak; two brothers-in-law, LeRoy Christiansen and his wife, Wilma of Portland, Oregon and Harry Backhaus of Denison.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, May 16, 1997 at the Our Savior Lutheran Church Denison, Iowa. Rev. Patrick Sparling officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Diane Furne provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Henry Henningsen singing "How Great Thou Art" and congregational hymns "Nearer, My God, to Thee", "What a Friend We Have In Jesus" and "I Know That My Redeemer Lives". Those serving as honorary pallbearers were: Morelle Christiansen, Elwood Christiansen, LaVonne Murray, Shawn Hopkins, Curtis Stender and Keith Gordon. Pallbearers were: Justin Schillerberg, Shane Schillerberg, Rodney Backhaus, David Stender, James Stender, Scott Hofer and Patrick Kloes. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Womens Guild. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Harold Stender (1917 - 2001)

Harold Stender was born February 25, 1917, the son of Carl and Anna Jepsen Stender. He died Monday, April 23, 2001 at his home in Denison, Iowa at the age of eighty-four years and two months.

Harold was born in Willow Township, where he lived with parents. He was baptized in Christ on May 19, 1917 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and later confirmed there on March 29, 1931. He received his education in the Denison Community Schools, graduating with the class of 1934.

Harold was united in marriage to Genevieve Malone. To this union two daughters were born, Sande and Cheryl.

On February 24, 1968, Harold was united in marriage to Nadine Wilson in Omaha, Nebraska. Harold was a life long farmer and worked at the post office in Denison for eighteen years, where he was Post Master for a number of years.

Harold was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, the Denison City Council and many farm organizations. He loved life and doing things with others, including his involvement with the Democratic Party of which he was a life long member.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Genevieve Stender King and a son-in-law, Edward Kloewer.

Survivors include his wife, Nadine of Denison; two daughters, Sande Sleister and her husband, Wayne Zeigler of Olathe, Kansas; Cheryl Kloewer of Albany, Oregon; one step-daughter, Pam Wilson of Denison; five grandchildren, Tony and Mike Sleister of Olathe, Kansas; Donavon Kloewer and his wife, Nan of Whidbey Island, Oak Harbor, Washington; Jeanna Ecker and her husband, Blake of Albany, Oregon; Mitchel Kloewer and his wife, Katrina of Norfork, Virginia; nine great-grandchildren, Andrew and Gavin Kloewer, Trey and Heydin Ecker, Nicolaus and Alexander Sleister, Donnie, Donnabelle and Edmar Kloewer; and two great-great-grandchildren; many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, April 26, 2001 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. David Sewing officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Oakland Cemetery in Denison. Jean Cornelius provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Renae C. Claussen singing "How Great Thou Art" and "On Eagle's Wings". Honorary pallbearers: Shannon O'Neill Gebers, Erin O'Neill Gleason, Lori Lonneman, Mary Kay O'Neill, Ryan O'Neill, Kevin O'Neill, Tari O'Neill and Jill Smith. Pallbearers were: Donavon Kloewer, Mitchel Kloewer, Mike Sleister, Tony Sleister, Sean O'Neill and Jeana Ecker. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Harold William Blunk (1916 - 2000)

Harold William Blunk was born January 13, 1916, the son of William and Dora (Messenbrink) Blunk. He died Tuesday, March 28, 2000 at the St. Luke's Regional Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa, at the age of eighty-four.

Harold was born on a farm in Hanover Township, Ricketts, Iowa and received his education in a rural school near Denison, Iowa. He was baptized in Christ and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. After completing his education, Harold helped his family on the farm.

On June 23, 1941, Harold entered the United States Army and due to a health problem was honorably discharged. He returned to the Denison area and farmed until moving to Anthon, Iowa, where he farmed and owned and operated a body and welding shop, until retiring in 1980. Harold was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Anthon, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Hazel Blunk, Dorothy O'Neal and Lucille Schwartz.

Survivors include one brother, Donald Blunk and his wife, Joyce of Kiron; one sister, Irene Schneider of Desert Shores, California; many nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 31, 2000 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Rev. Michael Harman officiated the service and grave side, rites held at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Stockholm Township in Kiron. Lois Gronau provided the organ accompaniment for the congregational hymns "Just as I Am, Without One Plea" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus". Those serving as pallbearers were: K.E. Barney Shives, Darrell Bowen, Denny Blunk, Lonnie Blunk Dave Willier and Terry Blunk. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them in fellowship and lunch served by the Ladies Aid. Harold William Trulsen (1916 - 1993)

Harold William Trulsen was born July 16, 1916 near Ricketts, IA to William and Louise (Sturm) Trulsen. He grew up in the Ricketts area where he farmed and later worked at the lumber yard.

On Jan. 17, 1940 Harold married Erma Ackelbein. She passed away March 3, 1948. On April 10, 1949 he was united in marriage to Gertrude Klaus in Ute. In 1963 the couple moved to Ida Grove. He worked for the county until 1979 when he retired. Harold was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove.

On Sunday, Sept. 5, 1993, Harold passed away at the age of 77 years at the Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Erma; two sons, Ronald in infancy and Harold George Trulsen on July 12, 1950; one grandson, Kirt Jessen on Jan. 8, 1970.

Survivors include his wife Gertrude; two daughters and their husbands, Joleen and Stanley Nading of Galva, and Marlene and Stanley Crum of Galva; one son Bruce and his wife Shirley Trulsen of Carroll; 13 grandchildren, Tami Jensen, Terry Nading, Traci Regennitter, Tasa Madsen, Renee Jessen, Michael Jessen, Todd Crum, Travis Crum, Shannon Crum, Kyle Crum, Matthew Crum, Ashley and Nichole Trulsen; six great grandchildren, Derek Jensen, Stephanie Jensen, Caleb and Shantel Regennitter, Devin and Danielle Madsen; one sister, Jeannetta Knief of Deloit.

Services were held Wednesday, Sept. 8, 1993 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove. Reverends Dennis Schultz and Andrew Currao officiated. Burial was in the Morgan Township Cemetery near Schleswig. The Ciha Funeral Homes in Ida Grove was in charge of arrangements.

Harry C. Gierstorf (1915 - 1984)

Harry C. Gierstorf was born on Sept. 21, 1915 in Morgan Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the son of William and Emma Vohlmann Gierstorf. He died April 12, 1984 at St. Luke's Medical Center in Sioux City, at the age of 68.

Harry was raised on a family farm in Hanover Township. He received his education at St. Paul's Lutheran School in Hanover. Harry was baptized as an infant and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith at St. Paul's Lutheran Church.

On Dec. 1, 1940, Harry was united in marriage to Lorraine Ullrich at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. Together they made their home on the Gierstorf home place in Hanover Township. In 1971 they retired from the farm and moved into Schleswig. For several years, Harry operated an upholstery business in his home in Schleswig. For sixteen years, he drove a school bus for the Schleswig Community School.

Harry was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hanover Township until 1976 when he became a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. He was active in the Lutheran Laymens League.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include, his wife Lorraine of Schleswig, one son Allan of Schleswig, two daughters, Lois, Mrs. Lanny Oakes of Brookville, Penn., and Mary, Mrs. Garlyn Lyman of Eldridge. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on April 16, at 10:30 a.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. The Rev. Richard Nelson officiated at the services. Mrs. Don Thompson served as organist with the Immanuel Ladies Choir. Hymns included, Asleep In Jesus and The Lord's My Shepherd. Pallbearers were Melvin Schroeder, Herbert Bohlmann, Edwin Bohlmann, Leonard Clausen, Delbert Gierstorf and Elmer Gierstorf. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Harry D. Schwanz (1914 - 1992)

Harry D. Schwanz was born on a farm northeast of Deloit, Iowa, May 18, 1914, the son of Andrew and Johanna Darling Schwanz. He was raised on the farm and received his formal education in the Deloit Grade School. Following his schooling he worked on various farms in the area.

On December 23, 1939, Harry was united in marriage with Mildred Iversen at the Friedens Evangelical Church Parsonage in Schleswig. Their union was blessed with two children, Arlo and Karen.

Following their marriage Harry continued working for area farmers until 1944 when he began farming on his own in the Crawford, Ida and Sac County areas. Since 1964, Harry and Mildred had resided in Denison where they had the privilege of celebrating their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 1989. Harry's entire life was devoted to farming and he greatly enjoyed playing cards with his friends.

Harry died Sunday morning, May 10,1992, at the Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, Iowa. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 77 years, 11 months and 22 days. He was a member of the United Church Of Christ in Schleswig.

Including his parents, Andrew and Johanna Schwanz, Harry was preceded in death by three brothers, Edson, Clarence and Lester Schwanz, and one sister, Gracie Schwanz.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Mildred Schwanz of Denison, one son and his wife, Arlo and Julie Schwanz of Denison, one daughter, Karen DeLong of Denison, five grandcnildren, Matthew Keating and his wife, Linda of Phoenix, Arizona, Mary Keating of Mesa, Arizona, Brian and Brenda Schwanz of Denison, and Michael DeLong of Denison, his step-mother, Bess Schwanz of Storm Lake, Iowa, two sisters and their husbands, Mary and Carl Lamaak of Schleswig, and Dorothy and Donovan Determann of Odebolt, one brother and his wife, Paul and Marie Schwanz of Denison, one sister-in-law, Marie, Mrs. Lester Schwanz of Schleswig, two half brothers and their wives, LeRoy and Pearl Schwanz of Storm Lake, and Wilbert and Lila Schwanz of Alta, Iowa, and one step-sister, Betty, Mrs. Marvin Sands of Galva, Iowa. Also surviving are nieces, nephew, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 13, 1992, at the United Church Of Christ in Schleswig, Iowa, with the Rev. James. M. Schatz officiating. Music for the service was provided by Dave Anderson singing "Old Rugged Cross" and "Amazing Grace" with Dorothy Jessen serving as organist. Honorary Bearers included Leslie Sahl, John Lorenzen, and Earl Hennings. Casket bearers were Matthew Keating, Brian Schwanz, Harold Henningsen, Walter Krock, Robert Crampton and Donald Kragel. Harry F. J. Groth (1918 - 1994)

Harry F.J. Groth was born on a farm in Goodrich Township, Crawford County, Iowa, December 22, 1918, the son of Charles Max and Caroline Petersen Groth. He was received into God's Kingdom of Grace through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism November 29, 1921 at Friedens Church in Schleswig and confirmed In his Christian faith as an adult at Immanuel Lutheran Church May 16, 1948.

Harry was raised on the farm and received his formal education at Goodrich Township Number Three rural school near his home. Following his schooling he began his life time career of farming the home place.

On September 16, 1945, Harry was united in marriage with Gladys Burmeister at St. John's Lutheran Church in Buck Grove, Iowa. They made their home on the Groth family farm where their union was blessed with three children, Earl, Sheila and Tom. After moving to Schleswig in 1982, Harry continued to maintain his active interest in the farm until his death. In his spare time he enjoyed playing cards with family and friends.

He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church In Schleswig, a member of their men's club dartball team, a former Trustee of the church and a member of the Crawford County Farm Bureau.

Harry died late Thursday, March 31, 1994, at Marian Health Center In Sioux City, Iowa. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 75 years, 3 months and 9 days.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Caroline Groth. Those who remain to cherish his memory include his wife of over 48 years, Gladys Groth of Schleswig, three children, Earl Groth and his wife Teresa of Denison, Sheila Groth of Schleswig and Tom Groth of Denison, two grandchildren, Carri and Kevin Groth of Denison, one sister, Louise Maack of Denison, nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

Harry's funeral ceremony was held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, April 4, 1994, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa with the Rev. Donald R. Wagner officiating. Music for the ceremony was provided by the congregation singing "Come to Calvary's Holy Mountain", "I Know That My Redeemer Lives" and "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" with Marlene Hight serving as organist. Casket bearers included Milroy Groth, Wilbert Groth, Daryl Pedersen, Randy Ulton, Mark Burmeister and Donald Kahl. The committal ceremony and interment was at Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Harry John Backhaus (1910 - 2002)

Harry John Backhaus was born January 15, 1910, the son of William and Emilie Schumann Backhaus. He died Monday, February 4, 2002, at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa at the age of ninety-two.

Harry was born on a farm in Ida County and was baptized in Christ on April 3, 1910 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grant Township and later confirmed on April 5, 1925 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. He received his education in a rural school near his home. After completing his education Harry farmed with his father.

On February 7, 1932, Harry was united in marriage to Milda Schillerberg at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hanover Township. The couple settled on a farm in Ida County, until 1942 when they purchased a farm south of Westside. Along with farming, which was more than an occupation to him, Harry sold Crows Seed Corn for over twenty-five years. They retired from farming in 1979 and moved to Denison in the spring of 1980. Harry moved to the Eventide Lutheran Home in August of 1997.

Harry was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and the Voter's Assembly. He was a member of the Schuetzen Verein of Westside and also served as director of Hayes Township School No. 5. Harry enjoyed visits from his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and the phone calls received from his children. He also enjoyed trains, socializing in a game of Mouser, and going for rides with his very good friend, Herman Garbe. In his leisure time, Harry enjoyed attending dances with his wife and loved to listen to Polka music.

Harry was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Milda in 1994; one daughter in infancy; one grandson, Todd Yockey; and two sisters, Ella Hamann and Bernice Bruhn.

Survivors include one daughter, Virginia Donnelson and her husband, Lyle of Glenwood, Iowa; one son, Dennis Backhaus and his wife, Margaret of Westside; six grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Darlyne Schillerberg of Denison and one brother-in-law, Merle Schillerberg of Charter Oak; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday, February 9, 2002, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. David Sewing officiated the service and grave side rites held at Manning City Cemetery in Manning. Organist Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for soloist Mandy Matthew and for service hymns: "What A Friend We Have in Jesus", "Beautiful Savior", and "I Know That My Redeemer Lives". Those serving as honorary pallbearers were: Carl Backhaus Jr., Burdell Jensen, Herman Garbe, Alfred Heinse, Robert Wiebers, Alden Backhaus, Jeannette Licht, Fred Backhaus, and Alice Gates. Those serving as pallbearers were: Dr. Scott Anderson, Rodney Backhaus, David Backhaus, William Backhaus, Jerry Backhaus, and Larry Orrico. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them in fellowship and lunch served by the Dorcas Society. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Harry R. Hagemann (1916 - 1985)

Harry R. Hagemann was born Sept. 28, 1916 in Morgan Township, Crawford County, Iowa. He died on Monday morning, May 6, 1985, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison at the age of 68.

Harry was raised on his family's farm in Crawford County. He received his formal education at St. Paul's Lutheran School, Hanover Township.

Harry farmed for many years with his father on the family farm. After retirement from farming, he moved into the Ricketts community where he made his home during the remaining years of his life.

Preceding Harry in death were his parents, Carl and Johanna.

Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Frieda Jeschke and Mrs. Elsie Norman of Denison; and two brothers, Alfred of Charter Oak and Paul of Ricketts. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 8, 1985 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hanover Township. Burial was in the St. Paul's Cemetery. The Rev. S. W. Holstein officiated at the services and graveside rites. Mrs. Joe Ewoldt served as organist for the services. Congregational hymns for the services included Just As I Am and I'm But A Stranger Here. Serving as pallbearers were Wayne Kuhlmann, Allen Hagemann, Don Hulsebus, Harvey Miller, Arthur Bohlmann and Charles Green. Harvey Carl Miller (1914 - 2006)

Harvey Carl Miller was born May 9, 1914, the son of Carl ana Minnie Bohlmann Miller. He died Sunday, November 26, 2006 at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa at the age of ninety-two.

Harvey was born in Hanover Township near Ricketts, Iowa. He was baptized in Christ on June 14, 1914 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hanover Township, Charter Oak, Iowa and confirmed there on April 4, 1929. He received his education in a rural school near his home. Harvey entered the United States Army on April 23, 1941, serving his country until receiving his honorable discharge on May 14, 1943.

On September 21, 1954 he was united in marriage to Betty Butler in Omaha, Nebraska. The couple settled on his family farm in Hanover Township and were blessed with the birth of one daughter, Beverly.

In 1965, the couple moved to Denison arid Harvey began working for Bohlmann Inc. where he worked for forty years. He was a loving father and grandfather who loved his granddaughters very much. In his spare time, Harvey enjoyed fishing, woodworking and refinishing furniture and polka dancing with Betty. He was a hard worker and took pride in taking care of his home. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and the Denison American Legion Post 8.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betty; two sisters: Adelia Schultz and her husband, Paul; and Edna Moore and her husband, Orville; and one sister-in-law, Viola Miller.

He is survived by his daughter, Beverly Vandenhull and her special friend, Tom Miller of Denison; two granddaughters: Diana Vandenhull and her fiance, Rick Bauer, and Kacie Vandenhull, all of Denison; one sister, Hilda Miller and one brother, Carl Miller, both of Denison; several nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, November 29,2006 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. David Sewing officiated the services and grave side rites held at Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison, Iowa. Organist Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for the congregational hymns, "How Great Thou Art," "Nearer, My God, to Thee," and "Amazing Grace." Those serving as pallbearers were: Gary Vandenhull, Tom Miller, Rick Bauer, Dennis Huebner, Milfred Nemitz, and Adam Gosch. Military honors were provided by the American Legion Post 8 of Denison, Iowa. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them in fellowship and lunch served by the Dorcas Society. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Harvey Henry Lamp (1916 - 2004)

Harvey Henry Lamp was born April 4, 1916. the son of Edward and Laura Friedrichsen Lamp. He died Wednesday, October 27, 2004 at the Eventide Nursing Home in Denison at the age of eighty-eight.

Harvey was born in Botna, Iowa, receiving his formal education in a rural school near Manning. Before entering the service, he was employed as a fireman by the North Western Rail Road and as a truck driver for Lacy North.

On December 25, 1939. Harvey was united in marriage to La Royce Pieper in Denison, Iowa. The couple made their home in Vail, Iowa and were blessed with the birth of two daughters.

On September 18, 1944. Harvey enlisted in the U.S. Army at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. He served in the South Pacific during WW II with the 77 Hq 305th Combat Infantry. While serving in the infantry, he was wounded in action in the Asiatic Pacific Theater on May 12, 1945, for which he was decorated with the Purple Heart. Other decorations he earned include the Philippine Liberation Ribbon. Good Conduct Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Service Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star and the Victory Ribbon. The battles and campaigns he participated in include: the Philippine Islands, Okinawa and Japan and the battle of the Ryukyus. After completing his military duties, he was Honorably Discharged on April 11, 1946 after which he returned to his family in Vail.

Soon after his return to the area, Harvey began his career in farming. La Royce worked along side her husband on the farm and continued working with him after they moved to the farm in Milford Township. The couple remained there until their retirement, at which time Harvey began working for Crawford County Conservation. The couple then moved to Eventide Senior Housing where they resided for fifteen years.

Harvey enjoyed music, polka dancing. playing the drums and the accordion. He was a long time volunteer at area nursing homes and the senior center entertaining residents and guests with his musical talents. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who cared for his family with love and devotion. He taught them music and enjoyed playing in a band that he started in the mid 1950's that lasted until 1982. In addition to teaching his children music, he also taught other interested students the accordion and piano and was very proud of the accomplishments of those he mentored.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Wilbur Lamp, Arnold Lamp and his wife, Lucille, and Clifford Lamp and his wife, Pat; three brothers-in-law Yale Piper, Robert Archer, Walter Sonnichsen: and his wife, La Royce, on Saturday, October 23, 2004.

He is survived by his two daughters: Laura Faye Kinney and her husband, Butch of Vail. Iowa; and Carolyn Kay Bukacek and her husband, Roger of Denison; five grandchildren: Shelley Weller and her husband, Gary; Susan Ernst and her husband, Sean; Penney Simpson and her friend, Wayne; Marc Kinney and his wife, Danielle; and Tammy Rice and her husband, Scott; fourteen great-grandchildren: three sisters: Delores Sonnichsen of Denison; Marian Nicholson and her husband, Bill of Denver, Colorado; and Norma Blanchette and her husband, Rick of Clifton, Colorado; one sister-in-law, Phyllis Lamp of Manning, Iowa; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, October 30, 2004 at the United Presbyterian Church in Denison. Iowa. Dr. Skip Shaffer officiated the services and grave side rites held at Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Organist Ann Voggesser provided the organ accompaniment for the congregational hymns, "Ivory Palaces" and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere". Eldon Hardekopf served as soloist, singing "The Lord's Prayer". Those serving as pallbearers were: Wayne Iverson, Nathan Adams, Mark Kinney, Gary Weller, Sean Ernst, and Scott Rice. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them in fellowship and lunch served by the Presbyterian Women. The Walter A. Huebner & Family Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Jacqueline Lee (Jess) Powell (1940 - 1994)

Jacqueline Lee (Jess) Powell passed away April 28 (1994) at Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames, following an extended illness. Jacqueline, daughter of Harwin and Dorothy (Maas) Jess, was born April 15, 1940 in Battle Creek.

She was baptized and confirmed at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, Iowa. She attended Charter Oak consolidated School for thirteen years where she was active in athletics, music drama and student government. She graduated salutatorian of the Class of 1958. Powell was a member of Rainbow Girls and served as president of the Crawford County 4-H Council. She attended Iowa State University where she received a bachelor of arts degree in graphic design.

While attending Iowa State University, she met Kirwin D. Powell, and they were united in marriage on Sept. 1, 1961 in Schleswig. This union was blessed with two children, Jill Denise and Trent Kirwin. For the past twenty years, Jacqueline and her family have resided in Ames.

She was an active community volunteer and was a member of the Chapter AA, P.E.O.; Alpha Phi Sorority Alumni Club, Mother Club and corporate board; the Mary Greeley Medical Center Art and Beautification Committee;and Collegiate Presbyterian Church and bible study group. For many years, she was employed by Coe's Flowers in Ames.

Immediate survivors include husband, Kirwin D. Powell of Ames; daughter, Jill Gabel and husband David, Cedar Rapids; brothers Dr. James D. Jess, wife Janice and daughter Danielle, Latimer, and Dr. Joel H. Jess, wife Tammy and daughters, Diane and Lauren, Pekin, Ill.; sister Judith A. Hines, husband Linne, children Jennifer, Bradonand Kenton, Ankeny.

Jacquline was preceded in death by sister Jennifer C. Jess and paternal grandfather Hans Jess and maternal grandmother Clara (Ehler) Maas.

Visitation was Saturday from noon to 1 p.m. in the Helser Chapel of the Collegiate Presbyterian Church in Ames with the service following with Reverend Dr. Arthur F. Sundstrom officiating. Internment is at Ames Municipal Cemetery. Memorial contributions will be sent to Cancer Research at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.

Joseph Peper (abt. 1956 - 2007)

Private graveside services for 51 year old Joseph Peper of Des Moines, formerly of Schleswig were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 4 (2007) at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Rev. Shawna Beeman officiated at the service. Those serving as pallbearers were Brian Welle, Jerrod Frahm, Jeff Frahm and Jerry Welle.

He passed away Tuesday, May 29 at his home in Des Moines.

Survivors include his father, Raymond Peper Sr. of Denison; one brother, Raymond Peper Jr. of Fort Worth, Texas; two sisters, Jane Frahm and her husband, Jim of Gowrie, Iowa and Barbara Siebrecht and her husband, Roger of Las Vegas, Nevada; and other relatives and friends.

Joyce Mae Petersen (1947 - 2006)

Joyce Mae Petersen was born May 10, 1947, the daughter of Emil and Lillie Bohlmann Petersen. She died Tuesday, July 25, 2006 at her home in Schleswig, Iowa at the age of fifty-nine.

Joyce was born in Denison, Iowa and was baptized in Christ June 15, 1947 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig and was also confirmed there on April 15, 1962. She received her education in Schleswig schools, graduating with the class of 1965.

On March 2, 1968, she was united in marriage to Darryl Petersen at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. The couple made their home in Schleswig and were blessed with the birth of two sons.

Joyce helped Darryl on the family farm until their retirement in 1994. In 1995, she began working at the Crawford County Jail as a Jailer; a position she held until the time of her death. In her spare time, Joyce enjoyed playing with her grandchildren and spending time with her family, visiting with friends, fishing with her husband, and enjoying life. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig.

She was preceded in death by her father, Emil Petersen; one brother-in-law, Tom Petersen; and one niece, Sandy Ramer. She is survived by her husband, Darryl of Schleswig; two sons: Jay and his wife, Tricia of Dunlap; and Chad and his wife, Danae of Schleswig; four grandchildren: Conlan, Kylie, Martia, and Tessa; her mother, Lillie Petersen of Schleswig; one sister, Norma Hanrahan and her husband, Don of Omaha, Nebraska; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Harry and Nellie Petersen of Denison; one brother-in-law, Jim Petersen and his wife, Madeline of Farmington, New Mexico; and one sister-in-law, Judy Cose and her husband, Gayle of Denison; many nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 28, 2006 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Merle Mahnken officiated the services and grave side rites held at Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Organist Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for the congregational hymns, "How Great Thou Art", "Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound" and "I Know that My Redeemer Lives". Those serving as honorary pallbearers were: Andrew Friedrichsen, Shannon Cose, Patrick Hanrahan, and Stacy Kelly. Those serving as pallbearers were: Dave Friedrichsen, Alan Nemitz, Jason Cose, Darvin Landgraf, Bruce Kelly, and Jeff Cose.

Lance Leonard Petersen (1952 - 1988)

Lance Leonard Petersen was born March 15, 1952 in Denison, Ia., the son of Leonard and Arlis Wegner Petersen. He died July 29, 1988 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison at the age of 36 years.
Lance was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, and was baptized on April 20, 1952, and was confirmed on April 3, 1966.

He graduated from the Charter Oak-Ute High School in the class of 1970. After graduation he farmed with his father and drove a truck for various people in the area. In 1976 he started driving for the Keating Truck Line in Charter Oak, and in 1978 bought his won truck tractor. In June of 1987 Lance discontinued his trucking business because of ill health.

Lance is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents and his paternal grandmother.

He is survived by his parents Leonard and Arlis Petersen of Ute; two brothers: Lynn and his wife, Valerie of Spokane, Wash., and Layne of Webster City; four sisters: Lori and her husband, Byron Christman of Ute, Lorene and her husband, Dennis Reimer of Schleswig, Leanne and her husband, Darrell Neu of Pueblo, Colo., Leesa and her husband, Joel Kuhlmann of Ute; nine nieces: Jessica, Amber and Lacey Christman, Min-di, Kimberly and Jodi Reimer, Mikenzie Petersen, and Joshlyn and Lindsey Neu; one nephew, Lee Kuhlmann; his paternal grandfather August Petersen of Denison, aunts, uncles, cousins and a great host of friends.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Aug. 1, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Pastor Kurt Kaiser officiated at the services and the grave side rites at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Mrs. Darold Kahl was organist for Henry Henningsen as soloist and congregational singing. Selections were "How Great Thou Art," "The Lord Is My Shepherd, I'll Not Want" and "Asleep in Jesus! Blessed Sleep." Serving as pallbearers were Dwight Goslar, Melvin Goslar, Kenneth Hicks, Rod Kunze, Russell Maack, Arlo Schoenfeld, Dan Throckmorton and Dean Vogt.

Lavone A. (Swenehart) Peterson (1933 - 2005)

CORRECTIONVILLE, Iowa - Lavone A. Peterson, 72, of Correctionville died Tuesday, March 15, 2005, at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, Iowa, following a brief battle with cancer. Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Grace Lutheran Church in Correctionville, with the Rev. Andrew J. Carlson officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Barker Funeral Home in Correctionville.

Lavone Swenehart was born Jan. 21, 1933, to Robert and Mabel (Hoist) Swenehart, in Crawford County, Iowa. She attended Schleswig (Iowa) High School in 1951. She furthered her education at Wayne Teacher's College.

In 1954, she married Chuck Peterson at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. They made their home in Correctionville. Four children were added to this union, Jim. Sue, Dave and Nancy and four grandchildren blessed the family, Nicole, Kenton, Rachel and Ben.

Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Chuck; her children, Jim and Laurel of Lennox, S.D., Sue and Mike Bubb of Sioux City, David of Palm Springs, Calif., and Nancy and Kendall Schoen of Ida Grove, Iowa; and four grandchildren, Nicole Peterson of Naperville, Ill., Kenton Peterson of Lennox, S.D., and Rachel and Ben Schoen of Ida Grove, Iowa.

Lois Jean (Jensen) Pickel (1936 - 2007)

Lois Jean Pickel was born May 19, 1936, the daughter of Roy and Lillian Lafrentz Jensen. She passed away on Saturday, March 31, 2007, at the Kavanagh Hospice House in West Des Moines, Iowa, at the age of seventy years.

Lois was born and raised in the Ida Grove/Schleswig, Iowa area. She was baptized in Christ, July 19, 1936, at the Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Church in Schleswig. She began her education in country school and then graduated from Schleswig High School, with the Class of 1954.

On July 3, 1954, Lois was united in marriage to Richard Hans Pickel at the Lutheran Church in Worthington, Minnesota. The couple made their first home in Omaha at the Offutt Air Force Base, where Richard served during his military service. In 1957, they returned to Crawford County and farmed for several years, before settling on the family farm northwest of Schleswig. In 1996, the couple moved into their home in Schleswig.

Lois was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, where she was confirmed on December 19, 1954, and took care of the cradle roll for several years. She helped her husband with the farm and with his insurance paper work, in later years. She enjoyed traveling with her children, fishing, camping, scrapbooking, and playing the clarinet in the Schleswig German Band.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Richard, in 2001.

Survivors include one son, Richard D. Pickel of Des Moines; two daughters, Lori Kragel and her husband, Gene of Ute; Lashelle Carlson and her husband, Lloyd Jr. of Norwalk; three grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; one sister, Linda Miller and her husband, Robert of Springville, Iowa; many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 3, 2007 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Merle Mahnken officiated the services and grave side rites held at Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Organist Marlene Hight provided accompaniment for the congregational hymns "How Great Thou Art," "My Hope is Built on Nothing Less," "Sheltered in the Arms of God," and "Lift High the Cross." Special service music was provided by Rubie Kastner singing "What A Friend We Have in Jesus," and "I Look to the Shepherd." Those serving as pallbearers were Murlin Jonannsen, Scott Bielenberg, Dale Lafrentz, Bernhard Pickel, Rawlo Kastner, and Larry Rix. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of the arrangements.

Thomas Harry Petersen (1947 - 1999)

Thomas Harry Petersen, age 51, passed away Sunday, April 25, 1999, after a valiant battle with lung cancer at St. Vincent Hospital and Health Center.

Tom was born June 13, 1947, to Harry and Nellie Petersen in Denison, Iowa. He graduated from high school in Schleswig, Iowa. Tom worked 10 years as a salesman for Kar Products and 11 years as parts manager for Cummings Power.

In 1982 he married Kathy Holbrook in Billings. Together they had one daughter, Cammie Jo. Tom enjoyed golfing at Par 3, snowmobiling around Cooke City and speed boating at Cooney Dam, with many friends. He is on his Goldwing in the sky. He took particular pleasure in spending quality time with his grandson, Jeremy. "I miss you, buddy."

Survivors include his parents, Harry F. and Nellie Petersen of Deloit; his wife, Kathy, daughter, Cammie Jo, grandson, Jeremy Michael, all of the family home in Billings; a sister Judy (Gayle) Cose of Denison; two brothers, Jim (Madelyn) Petersen of Farmington, N.M. and Darryl (Joyce) Petersen of Schleswig.

Memorial Mass was held noon Thursday, April 29, at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Billings. A visitation was held from 7-8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 28, at Dahl Funeral Chapel. Memorial will be distributed to Northeran Rockies Cancer Research Center, The American Cancer Society as well as other organizations important to Tom. The family has entrusted Dahl Funeral Chapel with the arrangements.

Wilbert Glenn Pickel (1939 - 2006)

Wilbert Glenn Pickel, age 66, of Sac City, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, June 18, 2006, at his home. Willie, as most people called him, was born August 14, 1939, in Schleswig, Iowa, the son of Peter and Jane (Maas) Pickel.

He attended Otter Creek No. 9 Country School and graduated from Schleswig High School in 1959. He continued his education at a mechanics school in Kansas City. He was baptized on September 3, 1939, and confirmed on May 24, 1953, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig.

On September 22, 1962, Willie was united in marriage to Betty Zahrobsky at the Grace Lutheran Church in Fort Dodge. They made their home in Sac City and he began working as a mechanic for Tommy Johnson Chevrolet in September 1963. He continued working at the Chevy garage until December 1981 when he began working for the City of Sac City in the Parks Department, retiring in May 2005.

Willie enjoyed being a "Hobby Farmer", especially doing field work and scouting out farm sales. In his spare time you could find him watching a Western movie, but most important to him was spending time with his family and friends, playing card games and reminiscing about the past.

He is survived by his wife, Betty; son, Glenn and Sherri of Sac City; two daughters, Sara and Curt Vote of Clive and Rachel and Chad Bruns of Madrid; two granddaughters, Morgan and Erica Bruns; brother, Bernhard "Ben" and Betty of Mapleton; four sisters, Evelyn and Gene Stamm of Omaha, Rubie and Rawlo Kastner of Schleswig, Beverly and Allen Rix of Manning, and Dorothy and Larry Rix of Des Moines; and sister-in-law, Lois Pickel of Schleswig. Other survivors include Betty's mother and family, Helen Zahrobsky, Don and Marge Zahrobsky, Roy Zahrobsky, Leon and Gloria Zahrobsky all of Fort Dodge, and Eileen and Ed Olson of Owatonna, Minnesota and his nieces and nephews and many friends.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Peter and Jane; brother, Richard; and father-in-law, Edward Zahrobsky.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, June 21m 2006, at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Sac City with Pastor Mark Thompson officiating. Farber & Otteman Funeral Home of Sac City was in charge of the arrangement where visitation was held on Tuesday from 5 to 8.
