Elizabeth (Brocksen) Bohlander (1910 - 2006)
Elizabeth Bohlander was born May 28, 1910, the daughter of Gus and Alma Rehder Brocksen. She died Friday, June 9, 2006 at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa at the age of ninety-six.Elizabeth was born in Westside, Iowa. She was baptized in Christ, October 19, 1918 and later confirmed as an adult at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison by Rev. William Frehse. She received her education in a rural school near her home. Elizabeth was united in marriage to Lester Bohlander, September 2, 1932 in Westside. The couple settled on a farm in Paradise Township and were blessed with the birth of two sons. The couple farmed together until 1966 when they moved to Denison. After moving to Denison, they worked together as custodians at Zion Lutheran Church.
She was a wonderful mother and grandmother who loved the company of her family and friends. She loved to bake, sew, garden and play cards. Having grown up with five brothers and four sisters, she had a passion for teaching children and especially enjoyed babysitting her own grandchildren, as well as other children. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Zion's Ladies Aid, Lamp Lighters, the Crawford County Hospital Auxiliary and the Eventide Auxiliary.
Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Lester; one son, Kenneth; five brothers and four sisters. Survivors include one son, Keith and his wife, Michelle of Kansas City, Missouri; four grandchildren: Julie Holmes, , Devon Bohlander and Alyssa Bohlander; and two great-grandchildren, Ariel and Hunter Holmes.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., Monday, June 12, 2006 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. David Sewing officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Jeanette Venzke provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "Be Still My Soul" and [sic] The Lord's My Shepard". Soloist Eldon Hardekopf sang, "How Great Thou Art". Those serving as pallbearers were: Dwight Boeck, Dennis Huebner, Elvin Hensel, Jerry Baker, Dan Nelson and Jim Bral. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Elizabeth G. (Brasky) McLarnan (1918 - 2004)
Elizabeth G. McLarnan was born April 9, 1918, the daughter of George and Gertrude Richardson Brasky. she died January 18, 2004, at Trigg Memorial Hospital in Tucumcari, New Mexico at the age of eighty-five.Eliabeth was born in Denison, Iowa. After receiving her education, she began teaching. After retiring from teaching, she moved to Tucumcari, New Mexico, where she was an active member of the First Baptist Church, teaching the Adult 6 Sunday School Class. She was also a member of the WMU, Polly Scott Group. She was also a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary in Denison.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Herman in 1958; one infant daughter, Judith Ann and a brother, Joe Brasky.
She is survived by her daughter, Alta "A.J." Williams of Tucumcari, New Mexico; two sons, Richard and his wife, Sherry of Denison; and Joe Williams and his wife, Carol of Denison; two grandchildren, Joseph Charles Williams, Jr. of Florida; and Jo Lynn Fravel of Sedelia, Missouri; two step-grandchildren, Michele Williams of Des Moines, Iowa; and Jamie Henningsen of Denison; three great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, January 24, 2004 at the Denison Baptist Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Mark Aurand officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Mary Jane Petersen provided the organ accompaniment for congregational singing "Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound" and "In the Garden". Those serving as pallbearers were: John Ballantine, Harold Thomason, John McMullen, Phill Pletcher, Lance Nelson and Rex Garside. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Fellowship Team. Elizabeth Nance Wilhelmina (Klink) Jepsen (1915 - 2006)
Elizabeth Nance Wilhelmina Jepsen was born on December 20, 1915, the daughter of William and Martha Petersen Klink. She died Tuesday, May 16, 2006 at her home in Denison, Iowa at the age of ninety.Elizabeth was born on a farm in East Boyer Township. She was baptized in Christ on March 21, 1916 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and later confirmed there on April 13, 1930. She lived with her parents on a farm and received her education in a rural school near her home.
On February 6, 1935, Elizabeth was united in marriage to Fred W. Jepsen at the Zion Lutheran Parsonage in Denison by Rev. William Frese. They made their home on a farm south of Charter Oak, in Willow Township and were blessed with the birth of five children. Fred passed away on April 16, 1970 and Elizabeth continued to live on the farm until moving to Charter Oak in 1974. She worked as a cleaning lady at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison for a few years. Then she did cleaning for Dr. Huber's Office in Charter Oak until retiring in 1986. Elizabeth remained in Charter Oak until 1999, when she moved to an apartment in Denison.
Elizabeth was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, their Ladies Aid since March 3, 1953 and Altar Guild since April 14, 1982. She was also active in Zion's Evening Guild and Fellowship Club. She enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening. In her leisure time, Elizabeth enjoyed crocheting and quilting for her children and grandchildren and playing cards.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Fred, a great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Jepsen; two brothers, John and William Klnk [sic]; and one sister, Clara Henningsen.
Survivors include three daughters, Delores Meyer and her husband, Robert of Denison; Marjorie Poggensee and her husband, Robert of Treynor; Jerri Grundmeier and her husband, Mark of Belmond, Iowa; two sons, Kenneth Jepsen and his wife, Betty of Marshalltown; and Roger Jepsen and his wife, Becky of Dunlap; fifteen grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, six step-greatchildren; a sister-in-law, Esther Jepsen of Spirit Lake; many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 19, 2006 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Vicar Douglas Bergelin officiated the services and grave side rites held at Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Organist Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for the congregational hymns, "Abide With Me! Fast Falls the Eventide", "Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound" and "I know that My Redeemer Lives". Those serving as Honorary Pallbearers were Wesley Henningsen, Robert Beeck, Doug Dowty, Gerald Klink, Ronald Henningsen, Byron Weiss, and Larry Beeck. Those serving as Pallbearers were Crai Grundmeier, Lincoln Jepsen, Matt Jepsen, Derek Hill, Jeremy Jepsen, Jason Jepsen, and Scott Meyer. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them in fellowship and lunch served by the Ladies Aid and Evening Guild. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Ella A. (Retman) Wingrove (1919 - 1988)
Ella A. Wingrove was born on Aug. 24, 1919, in Crawford County, Ia., the daughter of Louis H. and Malinda Krayenhagen Retman, and died on July 18, 1988, at her rural farm home near Dow City, at the age of 68.As a child, Ella received her education in a rural school near Dow City, and helped her family at home. As an adult, Ella worked for the Armour Company in Denison, and for eight years at the Jo Mart Steak House in Denison.
On Dec. 12, 1942, Ella and Bryce H. Wingrove of Arion, were united in marriage at Brownwood, Texas, and they were blessed with two children. As a family, they lived on the family farm near Dow City until Bryce died on Nov. 25, 1979, and Ella then moved to Denison where she made her home until her death.
Ella enjoyed the farm and spent much time there attending her flowers and yard. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Bryce; and one sister, Selma Dersien. Survivors include her son Roger and his wife, Mary Jo of Denison; her daughter JoAnn and her husband, Ralph Reisz of Denison; two grandchildren; and two sisters: Lillian and her husband, Ray Reetz of Wall Lake, and Edna Mae and her husband, Howard Kremin of Dow City.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Thursday, July 21, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, with Pastor James W. Restvedt officiating at the services and grave side rites at the Dow City Cemetery in Dow City. Mrs. Darold Kahl was organist for Henry Henningsen, soloist, and congregational singing. Selections were "The Lords Prayer," "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Just As I Am." Serving as pallbearers were David Kremin, Steve Kremin, James Bielfeldt, William Ahart, Robert Ahart and Wilber Ahart.Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison.

Ella C. (Preul) Steckelberg (1915 - 1983)
Ella C. Steckelberg was born on a farm north of Ricketts, Iowa, Aug. 4, 1915, the daughter of August and Fances Peters Preul. She was baptized when she was an infant and was later confirmed into the Lutheran Faith at the St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. Ella was raised on the family farm and received her education at the rural school near their home.In 1934, Ella was united in marriage with Howard Halterman at Charter Oak. To this union five children were born, Delos, Bernice, Connie, Joleen, and Beverly. They made their home in the area before moving to Bayard. Later they moved to a farm near Manilla and while living there Howard died in 1943.
Ella and her family continued to reside on the farm and on June 24, 1945, Ella was united in marriage with Walter Steckelberg at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. They made their home in Denison for a time and in 1962 moved to a farm west of Denison. In 1970 they moved to the Crawford County Home near Arion which they managed until retiring and moving to Denison in 1977.
Ella died, Dec. 2, 1983, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison. At the time of her death she had attained the age of 68 years, 3 months, and 28 days. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and the Ladies Aid of the Church.
Ella was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband Howard Halterman, one daughter Beverly Halterman, four sisters, Anna Schoenfeld, Hilda Maack, Hattie Hageman, and Clare Hageman, and one brother, Fred Preul.
She is survived by her husband Walter Steckelberg of Denison, four children, Delos Halterman of Denison, Bernice, Mrs. Donald Koesters of Council Bluffs, Connie, Mrs. Gene Henningsen of Ida Grove, and Joleen Ricketts of Denison, 11 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, one sister, Lena Sanders of Charter Oak, and three brothers, Henry Preul of Denison, Edward Preul of Charter Oak, and Louis Preul of Denison. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 P.M., Dec. 5, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, with the Rev. Jack D. Heck officiating. Comfort in music was provided by Henry Henningsen singing "My God And I" and the congregation singing "Rock of Ages" and "I Know That My Redeemer Lives" with Mrs. Fred Rabe as organist. Honorary bearers included her grandsons, Shannon Henningsen, Richard Koesters, Timothy Ricketts, and Delos Halterman. Pall bearers were Alfred Schoenfeld, Donald Hulsebus, Lyle Meyer, Loren Langholz, Robert Steckelberg, and Alvein Bandow. Interment was in the Charter Oak Cemetery at Charter Oak. The Pfannebecker-Maxwell Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Ella F. (Backhaus) Hamann (1913 - 2000)
Ella F. Hamann was born August 22, 1913, the daughter of William and Emilie Schumann Backhaus. She died Friday, April 14, 2000, at the William Dale Care Center in Battle Creek, Iowa, at the age of eighty-six.Ella was born on the family farm near Schleswig and was baptized in Christ on October 15, 1913 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Ida Grove, Iowa by Rev. A. W. Brauer and later confirmed on April 8, 1928. She received her education in the country school, Morgan Number 5, near her home.
On May 9, 1937, Ella was united in marriage to Ennis Hamann. They made their home in Schleswig and were blessed with the birth of one daughter, Judith. In 1947, Ella and Judith settled on the farm. Ella continued living there until moving to the Willow Dale Care Center in Battle Creek in February, 1998.
Ella was a devoted member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. She enjoyed the outdoors, working in her garden, baking, cooking, and raising chickens and livestock.
She was preceeded in death by her parents, one sister, Bernice Bruhn and her husband, Irwin and one sister-in-law, Milda Backhaus. Survivors include one daughter, Judith Walden and her husband, Edward of Fort Salonga, New York; one brother, Harry Backhaus of Denison; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10 A.M., Tuesday, April 18, 2000 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Merle Mahnken officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Grant Township, Ida Grove, Iowa. Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Henry Henningsen singing "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and congregational hymns "How Great Thou Art" and "I Know that My Redeemer Lives". Those serving as pallbearers were: Rodney Backhaus, Jerry Backhaus, David Backhaus, Bill Backhaus, Jason Kragel, Ronald Groth, Ryan Kragel and Roger Groth. Elmer Carl John Bohlmann (1913 - 1996)
Elmer Carl John Bohlmann, the son of August and Lydia Fester Bohlmann was born April 29, 1913. He died on Thursday, May 16, 1996 at the Crawford County Memorial in Denison, Iowa at the age of eighty-three.Elmer was baptized in Christ in May of 1913 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Soldier Township by Rev. A.D. Greif and later confirmed there on April 1, 1928 by Rev. Otto Von Gemmingen. He received his education in a rural school near his home and the Immanuel Lutheran School, Soldier Township.
On December 29, 1940, Elmer was united in marriage to Mildred Hopp at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Soldier Township. The couple made their home on a farm near Ricketts until 1949, when they moved to a farm north of Schleswig. In 1985, the couple retired and moved to their home in Schleswig. The couple were blessed with the birth of two children, Faylenne and Eugene.
Elmer was a loving and devoted husband and father who especially enjoyed watching his grandsons grow up and having them visit. He enjoyed farming, feeding cattle and hogs and socializing with friends and neighbors over a cup of coffee. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig where he served as an elder, a trustee and was the treasurer of the Lutheran Laymen's League for many years. He also enjoyed the fellowship of the Dart Ball League at Immanuel.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Eugene on July 4, 1951, two sisters, Esther and Edna; two brothers, Raymond and Erwin. Survivors include his wife, Mildred of Schleswig, one daughter, Faylenne Slechta and her husband, James of Vail, two grandsons, Steven Slechta and his wife, Kelly of Omaha and David Slechta of Vail, one sister, Irma Maas of Schleswig; one brother, Carl Bohlmann and his wife, Hildegard of Charter Oak.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, May 20, 1996 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Patrick Sparling officiated the serrvice and grave side rites held at the St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Hanover Township, Charter Oak, Iowa. Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "Nearer, My God to Thee", "The King of Love My Shepherd Is", "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and "Nearer, My God to Thee". Those serving as pallbearers were: Robert Andresen, Steven Slechta, David Slechta, Leon Maas, James Else and Merle Witt. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of arrangements. The family would like to acknowledge the prayers, memorials, flowers, food and cards of sympathy, and politely thank each and everyone for their kind considerations. Rather than acknowledging each with a card of thanks, they would prefer using the money for postage as a memorial in Elmer's name for other useful causes.

Elmer Carl Kutschinski (1910 - 2003)
Elmer Carl Kutschinski, was born June 13, 1910, the son of Carl and Louise Jahn Kutschinski. He died on February 17, 2003 at 3:00 p.m. at the age of 92.Elmer was born and raised on the family farm north of Charter Oak, Iowa. He was baptized and later confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church. He received his education at Charter Oak Township rural school District 5 and St. John's Lutheran School. Elmer devoted his entire life to the family farm in Charter Oak which continues to be operated by his daughters and Allan Neddermeyer.
On December 8, 1939 Elmer married Thelma Goodall of Mapleton, Iowa at St. John's Lutheran Church. The couple continued living on the family farm and were blessed with the birth of four children; Frances, Sandra, Gail and Roxann. He farmed until retiring in 1973 at which time he moved to town. In his retirement he enjoyed playing cards with neighbors and friends. Elmer also enjoyed his many visits to see children and grandchildren in Colorado, Arizona, Arkansas and Nevada.
Elmer was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a lifetime member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Crawford County Farm Bureau and one of the founders of the Charter Oak Senior Center.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Thelma; one son, Gail; two brothers, Ernest and Arthur Kutschinski; and two sisters, Erna Friedrichs and Olinda Schultz.
Survivors include three daughters, Frances Mills of Phoenix, Arizona; Sandra Kelley and her husband, Michael of Bella Vista, Arkansas; Roxann Kutschinski and her husband, John Cleaver of Ft. Collins, Colorado; five grandchildren, Robert Armstrong, Christine Woodard, Kevin Kelley, Bonnie Cleaver and Sean Cleaver; one great-grandson, Trey Woodard; one brother, Alvin Kutschinski and his wife, Dorothy; one sister, Irene Lee and her husband, Francis, all of Charter Oak; many other relatives and friends.

Gebhardt officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison, Iowa. Elmer Fredrick Wenzel (1910 - 1990)
Elmer, son of Hugo and Hilda Marie Tollegaard Wenzel, was born Jan. 19, 1910, near Manilla, Ia. He was baptized on April 10 of that year at Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla, and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith on April 13, 1924. Elmer attended country school.On Dec. 31, 1938, Elmer was united in marriage with Ellen Kuhl. Two children, Joann and Wayne were born to this union. Elmer farmed just east of Manilla. Ellen died on Oct. 10, 1969.
In 1970, Elmer was united in marriage with Mildred Schwieso. In 1975, they retired and made their home in Manilla. This past fall Elmer became a resident of the Manilla Manor Nursing Home. He died there on Friday afternoon, Jan. 5, 1990, at the age of 79 years, 11 months and 17 days.
Besides his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents. Elmer is survived by his wife, Mildred of Manilla; by his children, Joann and her husband, Carl Rankin, of Des Moines and Wayne Wenzel of Des Moines; by six grandchildren, Jeffrey Overholser of Huxley, Michael Overholser of Germany, Rhonda Finney of Corydon, Laura Overholser of Iowa City and Christina and Cameron Wenzel, both of Des Moines; by four great-grandchildren, Nicole, Kyle, Kari and Chad Overholser; by a brother, Rockley Wenzel of Frazee, Minn.; by other relatives and friends.
Elmer was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla. He was quite artistic and enjoyed painting pictures in acrylics.
Services were held Monday, Jan. 8, 1990, at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla with Pastor Glenn Wiechmann officiating. Music was "How Great Thou Art" sung by Marlene Jahn and Laurie Powers; "I Know That My Redeemer Lives" and "Abide With Me" by the congregation with Marian Joens as organist. Pallbearers were Art Joens, Melvin Holdsworth, Jim Macumber, Bernie Jorgensen, Harold Holdsworth and Marvin Vennink. Honorary pallbearers were Ray Holdsworth, Larry Thomssen, Warren Wiese, Louie Muhlbauer and Harry Behrend. Interment was in Nishnabotna Cemetery in Manilla.

Elmer Walter Jacob Spack (1911 - 1980)
Elmer Walter Jacob Spack was born on June 2, 1911, near Buck Grove, Iowa, the son of Michael and Emily Deiber Spack. He died Aug. 14, 1980, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, Iowa, at the age of 69.Elmer was raised west of Manilla. He received his formal education in the rural schools near his home. After the completion of his education, he worked with his father on the farm.
On June 27, 1932, Elmer was united in marriage to LaVerne Hamann at Elk Point, S.D. They made their first home in Denison. In 1938, they moved to a farm north of Deloit later moving to the Grand Junction area. After returning to Denison for a short time, Elmer continued his farming and purebred hog operation on a farm in the Boyer area.
Elmer was baptized as an infant and later as an adult was confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church at Stockholm Township.
Elmer was preceded in death by his father and one brother. Survivors include his wife LaVerne of Kiron, one son Kay Allen of Point Arena, Calif., one daughter, Lynne, Mrs. Abe Gronau of Denison and his mother, Mrs. Emily Spack. Also by seven grandchildren, one brother Clifford of Aspinwall, and one sister, Esther, Mrs. Ed Jochimsen of Charter Oak.
Funeral services were held Aug. 16, at 2:00 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, Stockholm Township. Burial was in St. John's Cemetery. The Rev. Paul Wiegert officiated at the services. Pallbearers included, Lowell Rickers, Herbert Johannsen, Don Edwardson, Don Vote, Arnold Zarestky and Loren Keairnes.

Garnet Agnes Louise (Else) Schmidt (1910 - 1992)
Garnet Agnes Louise Schmidt was born on November 29, 1910 on a farm in Grant Township in Ida County, the daughter of Julius and Ella Bendixen Else. She died at her home in Schleswig on Tuesday, August 25, 1992 at the age of 81 years.Garnet was baptized at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Grant Township on December 30, 1910 and was confirmed there on April 5, 1925. Her education began in rural school near her home and continued at the Schleswig Community High School where she graduated with the class of 1929.
After finishing her education, she began her employment at the Herman Schmidt Grocery Store where she remained until August 17, 1932 when she was united in marriage to Ray Schmidt. The couple settled in Schleswig where Ray drove the Skelly Tank Wagon. In 1947, Ray and Julius Else started Modern Appliance in Schleswig and later took on hardware items. They moved into the present location in Schleswig in 1955 where they remained until retirement in 1978.
In her free time, Garnet enjoyed needle point, crocheting and socializing with several bridge clubs in the area. Additionally, Garnet enjoyed collecting cupie dolls, birds and salt and pepper shakers. She loved the tranquility of the water and enjoyed Lake View.
She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig for nearly forty-five years, and served as the church organist for many years in addition to serving as choir director in 1976.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother Julius J. Else as an infant in 1923. Survivors include her husband, Ray, and one brother James Else and his wife Marlyn of Schleswig.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 28, 1992, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig with Pastor Donald R. Wagner officiating the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for soloist Henry Henningsen singing "How Great Thou Art" and "The Lord's Prayer." Honorary Pallbearers were: Edgar Marquardt and Leonard Hollander. Pallbearers were: Michael J. Goodin, Elmer Bohlmann, Robert Skarin, Allen Stoneking, Donald Meyer and Chris Sands. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Walter A. Huebner and Sons' Funeral Home in Schleswig.

Garnet (Ernest ) Bruhn (1912 - 1989)
Garnet Bruhn, age 77, of Mapleton, died Sunday, Oct. 15, 1989, at the Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, Ia., after a short illness.Services were held on Tuesday, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton with Pastor Les Kimball officiating. Burial was in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Mapleton. A prayer service was held on Monday evening at the Walter Funeral Home in Mapleton.
Mrs. Bruhn, the former Garnet Ernest was born on Jan. 10, 1912, to Rudolph and Helen (Paulsen) Ernest on a farm near Schleswig, Ia. She lived near Schleswig until her marriage to Louis Bruhn on Feb. 2, 1930, at Schleswig. After marriage they farmed in the Charter Oak-Ute and Mapleton area. They moved into Mapleton in 1974. Mr. Bruhn died July 17, 1986.
Mrs. Bruhn was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, LCW, LWML, past president at Immanuel, and a Sunday school teacher. She belonged to the Senior Citizens task force and advisory board.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Lowell and a brother. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Wayne (Lois) Harmening of Carroll; three sons, Virgil of Mapleton, Curtiss of Denison and David of Charter Oak; 16 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Laverne Eyer, Dale Bruhn, Orville Groth, Virtus Brockman, Dennis Bruhn and Loren Knutzen. Honorary Society was the Senior Citizens.

Garnet Helena Friedericke (Borgstahl) Arnold (1915 - 2003)
Garnet Helena Friedericke Arnold was born January 12, 1915, the daughter of John and Agnes Neumann Borgstahl. She died Sunday, July 6, 2003, at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa, at the age of eighty-eight.Garnet was born in Webster, Minnesota, and was baptized in Christ on February 7, 1915, and confirmed in May of 1927 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Webster. She attended parochial school in Webster and rural school in Denison. After completing her education, she worked as a housekeeper for several families and worked at Evelyn's Café in Denison. On April 3, 1938, Garnet was united in marriage to Robert Arnold at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. The couple settled on a farm south of Denison and were blessed with the birth of two daughters. In addition to taking care of her family and their home, Garnet worked along side Robert with the farm chores.
She was a very loving wife, mother, and grandmother, who enjoyed needlework, flower and vegetable gardening, baking wheat bread, and making home-made apple butter. She also enjoyed family trips and visits with her grandchildren. Garnet considered her family, church, education, and music to be very important. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa, the Dorcas Society, and taught Sunday School for many years. She was a member of her neighborhood club and enjoyed playing pinochle with her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Olga Keske and her husband, Bill; five brothers: Arthur and his wife, Dora; Walter and his wife, Matilda; Gerhardt and his wife, Esther; William and his wife, Rose; and Roland and his wife, Vernetta; two sons-in-law: Earl Kahl and Gary Schroeder.
She is survived by her husband, Robert of Denison; two daughters: Dorothy Kahl of Nora Springs, Iowa; and Carolyn Schroeder of Waterloo, Iowa; five grandchildren: Robert Kahl and his wife, Stephanie of Omaha, Nebraska; Daniel Kahl and his fiancée, Melanee Kelley of Radford, Virginia; Jill Kahl of Waterloo, Iowa; Andrea Schroeder of Denver, Colorado; and Aaron Schroeder of New Orleans, Louisiana; one sister, Marcella Jenkins and her husband, Wilbert of Storm Lake, Iowa; other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 9, 2003 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev Kurt Kaiser and Vicar David Lyons officiated the services and grave side rites held at Oakland Cemetery in Denison, Iowa. Organist Jeanette Venzke provided the organ accompaniment for the soloist Larry Boeck as he sang "How Great Thou Art," and for congregational hymns "Just As I am, Without One Plea," and "I Know That My Redeemer Lives." Those serving as pallbearers were: Andrea Schroeder, Robert Kahl, Jill Kahl, Aaron Schroeder, and Daniel Kahl. The family invited everyone in attendance to return to the church and join them in fellowship and lunch served by the Dorcas Society. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Garnet Lorraine (Brockman) Friedrichsen (1915 - 2000)
Garnet Lorraine Friedrichsen was born at Hayes Township, rural Ida County, Iowa, October 9, 1915, the daughter of Henry and Rosina Thiede Brockman. She was received into God's Kingdom of Grace through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism October 28, 1915 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grant Township and confirmed in her Christian Faith March 24, 1929 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. She received her education from Schleswig High School.On March 11, 1939, Garnet was united in marriage with Leroy Friedrichsen at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. Their union was blessed with one daughter Eileen. They made their home on the family farm near Schleswig and it was there they raised their daughter.
Leroy passed away October 12, 1981, and the following year Garnet moved into Schleswig. In November of 1999, she moved back to the farm to make her home with her daughter and son-in-law. Due to failing health she entered Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City on June 27, 2000. On July 28, 2000 she moved to Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison and it was there her death occurred Saturday August 19, 2000. At the time her of her death she had attained the age of 84 years, 10 months, and 10 days.
Garnet was member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. After Leroy died she went to several senior citizen functions where she enjoyed visiting and dancing. She also enjoyed her many card clubs but, most important to Garnet were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Including her husband, Garnet was also preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include one daughter Eileen Streck and husband Marvin of Schleswig, three grandchildren, Sonya Sherrill and husband David of Sioux City, Iowa, Ryan Streck and wife Deborah of Muscatine and Brent Streck and wife Laurie of Omaha, Nebraska and two great-grandchildren, Tess and Todd Sherrill both of Sioux City.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, August 22, 2000 at the Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa, with the Rev. Merle Mahnken officiating. Music for the service was provided by Larry Boeck singing "How Great Thou Art" and "Old Rugged Cross." Marlene Hight served as organist. Casket bearers included Brent Streck, Ryan Streck, David Sherrill, Palmer Moeller, Clarence Friedrichsen and Donald Kluver. Interment was at the Morgan Township Cemetery at Schleswig, Iowa. Following the interment the family invited everyone to Shorty's in Schleswig for lunch and fellowship. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

George Adolph Wendt (1916 - 1996)
George A. Wendt, age 79, of Ricketts, died Tuesday, March 5, 1996, at Denison, Iowa.Services were held 1:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Ricketts, with Pastor Eugene Ernst officiating. Burial was in Immanuel Cemetery, Soldier Township, rural Charter Oak, Iowa. Certa Teut was the organist for the service and the congregation sang, "I'm But A Stranger Here" and "What A Friend We Have in Jesus."
George Adolph Wendt was born August 10, 1916, on the family farm in Crawford County, Iowa, the son of William Carl and Ella (Engelke) Wendt. He was baptized on August 19, 1916 by Pastor Theo. Wolfram and confirmed June 1, 1931 by Pastor Krog at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Ute, Iowa. He attended rural grade school near his home. On March 28, 1943, George married Mahela Kruse at Mapleton, Iowa. The couple lived in the Ute, Mapleton and Ricketts area where he farmed and trucked.
George was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church in Ricketts. He was also a member of the Monona County Saddle Club and the Community Club in Ricketts for a number of years. George enjoyed playing dart ball for the church.
Survivors include his wife, Mahela; a daughter and her husband, Darlene and Gary Price of Council Bluffs, Iowa; two sons, Gary Wendt of Denison, Iowa and Richard (Rick) Wendt of Mapleton, Iowa; four grandchildren, Laurie and her husband, Mike Sheil of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Gary Jr. and his wife, Misty Wendt of Ute, Iowa, David Price of Manilla, Iowa and Brandy Wendt of Denison, Iowa; two sisters, Mildred Brummer of Denison and Lucille "Lu" Grefe of South Sioux City, Nebraska.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Elenora and one infant brother.
Pallbearers were Gary Wendt Jr., Ronald Engelke, Wayne Stephenson, Mike Sheil, Robert Kroll and Melvin Goslar. Arrangements were made under the direction of the Armstrong Funeral Home of Mapleton.

George Virgil Else (1912 - 1993)
George Virgil Else was born August 27, 1912, the son of Gustav and Minnie Riessen Else. He died on Monday, April 12, 1993 at the Carroll Health Center in Carroll, Iowa at the age of eighty years.George grew up on the family farm in Morgan Township near Schleswig. He received his education in a rural school near his home and graduated from the Schleswig Community High School with the class of 1930.
After completing his education, George began farming with his family. On June 5, 1935, he was united in marriage to Lucille Hansen at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. The couple settled on a farm in the region and were blessed with the birth of two children.
He continued his farming career for nearly thirty years before combining his farming activities with the insurance industry at the Farmers Mutual Insurance Company of Schleswig. After retiring from farming, the couple settled on an acreage west of Schleswig and George began his full time service with Farmers Mutual Insurance Company. He subsequently served as a director and was their Secretary Treasurer for a number of years. In December of 1962, Lucille died and George remained at home and continued his insurance activities.
George was united in marriage to Edna Huebner on November 28, 1965 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. The couple settled at his home west of Schleswig. In 1985, George retired from his position as Director of Farmers State Bank in Schleswig and in 1987, the couple moved to Mesa, Arizona where they lived until 1990 when they returned to Iowa and settled in Carroll.
George was very active in community affairs in Schleswig and volunteered his services in various activities, including the Schleswig Community Club where he was one of the founders of the Community Club Building. He was also one of the founders of the Schleswig Calf Show Days. He was a loving husband and father whose kindness and generosity shall be remembered by those he loved. He was a member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig.
George was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Lucille; one brother, Edgar Else; and one sister-in-law, Mary Else. Survivors include his wife Edna, of Carroll; two sons, Morelle of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Dale Huebner and his wife, Mary of Carroll; two daughters, Marlys Grell and her husband, Lyle of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and Sally Sullivan and her husband, Tom of Carroll. Also, twelve grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, one brother, Arthur G. Else of Long Beach, California and one sister-in-law, Frieda Else of Schleswig.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 14, 1993 at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, Iowa. Pastor James Schatz officiating the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig, Iowa. Dorothy Jessen provided the organ accompaniment for soloist Rubie Kastner singing "I'm But a Stranger Here" and "How Great Thou Art." Honorary Pallbearers were Dwayne Andreson, Robert Reimer, Eddie Claussen and Larry Clausen. Pallbearers were Edward Edsen, Fred Johnson, Dennis Bruhn, Rich Evans, Al Sedore and Ron Lahr. The Walter A. Huebner and Sons' Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of arrangements.

George H. Hoemann (1918 - 1996)
George H. Hoemann was born January 14, 1918, the son of Herman and Winifred Breyfogle Hoemann. He died at the St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska on Tuesday, March 26, 1996 at the age of seventy-eight.George was born on a farm near Primghar, Iowa and received his education at the Sutherland School, graduating with the class of 1934. After receiving his education he was employed at various jobs, until 1942 when he entered the United States Army served his country during WW II and the Korea War. He attained the rank of Master Sergeant.
On June 1, 1950, George was united in marriage to Joan Naviaux at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Omaha. The couple made their home on a farm south of Denison and were blessed with the birth of seven children. The couple retired from farming in 1979. George continued working for the ASCS office, and in the crop insurance industry as an agent and adjuster. George was a very faithful husband, loving and caring father and grandfather, who was known as Papa to his grandchildren. He enjoyed reading, telling jokes, loved to fish in Minnesota and was very keen with numbers.
He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Joan of Denison; five sons, George H. Hoemann Jr. of Knoxville, Tennessee; John Hoemann of Denison; Jim Hoemann of Englewood, Colorado; Jeff Hoemann and his wife, Ann of Des Moines; Jerry Hoemann of Dallas, Texas; two daughters, Peg Graeve and her husband, Bernie of Ankeny, Iowa; Pat Crawford and her husband, Terry of Denison; seven grandchildren; three sisters, Margaret Hinrichsen and her husband, Louie; Bonnie Segebart and her husband, Harold, Dorothy Hoemann; two brothers, Kenneth Hoemann and Donald Hoemann and his wife, Fola all of Denison, and a brother-in-law John Naviaux and wife Mary of Lincoln, Nebraska, nieces and nephews.
A Parish Wake Service was held at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, March 28, 1996 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m., Friday, March 29, 1996 at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison, Iowa. Fr. Andrew Hoffmann served as Celebrant with interment at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Military Honors were conducted by American Legion Post No. 8, Denison, Iowa. Jean Cornelius provided the organ accompaniment for St. Rose of Lima Church Choir. Honorary pallbearers were: Kenneth Hoemann, Leo Fitzpatrick, Don Hoemann, Vernon Lueck, Eldon Olson and Bob Paup. Pallbearers were: Roger Brodersen, Larry Brodersen, Gary Tiefenthaler, Kim Tiefenthaler, Terry Crawford and Bernie Graeve. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them for fellowship and lunch at the Parish Center, served by the Ladies Guild. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

George Maack (1912 - 1996)
George Maack was born on a farm in Hanover Township, rural Charter Oaks, Iowa, February 9, 1912, the son of John and Mary Dorale Maack. As an infant he was received into God's Kingdom of Grace through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hanover Township and confirmed in his Christian Faith there August 2, 1925.He was raised on the farm and received his education in the rural schools near their home. Following his schooling he was employed as a farmhand for area farmers.
On February 2, 1941, George was united in marriage with Esther Gluesing at the St. Paul Lutheran Parsonage, Hanover Township. They made their home on a farm in Otter Creek Township and he was employed as a farmhand, later moving to a farm at Battle Creek, Iowa. During World War II, from May of 1942 until November of 1945, George served his country in the United States Army. Upon his discharge he returned to the farm at Battle Creek for one year before moving to a farm southeast of Schleswig where he farmed for eight years. They then moved to Denison where he was employed in carpentry and masonary work for a year. In 1957 they moved to Monterrey, California where George was employed as a carpenter for eight years before returning to Denison in 1965. After their return to Denison he was employed as a carpenter for Schultz Construction and Larry Wiebers. From 1972 until his retirement he was self-employed as a carpenter.
Esther died April 2, 1973 and George continued to reside and work in Denison. During his retirement years he resided in Denison spending his summers in the Iowa Great Lakes region enjoying his favorite hobby of fishing.
George died Wednesday afternoon, February 21, 1996 at his home in Denison, Iowa. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 84 years and 9 days. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, American Legion Post 8 and the Ninus L. Hunt V.F.W. Post 2504 all of Denison, Iowa.
Including his parents and his wife, George was preceded in death by four brothers, Walter, Edward, Ernest and John Maack and three sisters, Ella Meggers, Meta Jepsen and Frieda Maack.
Those who remain to cherish his memory include two sisters-in-law, Hattie Gluesing and Louise Maack, both of Denison, Iowa, many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, February 24, 1996 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa with the Rev. Kurt R. Kaiser and Vicar Andrew Carlson officiating. Music for the service was provided by Henry Henningsen singing "How Great Thou Art" and "Old Rugged Cross" with the congregation singing "Rock Of Ages." Karen Kahl served as organist. Casket bearers included Charles Maack, Clarence Friedrichsen, Robert Jepsen, Larry Gluesing, Merlin Maack and Harold Fink. Military Honors were provided by American Legion Post 8, Denison, Iowa.

George P. Meseck (1910 - 1989)
George P. Meseck, the son of August and Ida Henning Meseck, was born on February 22, 1910 on a farm in Charter Oak Township. He died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa on June 21, 1989 at the age of 79 years.George grew up on a farm and attended the Immanuel Lutheran School in Soldier Township. After his education he helped on the family farm until his marriage to Elsie Krueger of Ricketts, Iowa on May 26, 1940 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Soldier Township. This union was blessed with five children.
George and Elsie farmed near Ricketts, Iowa the home he maintained until several months ago, when he entered Denison Care Center.
George was baptized as an infant and in 1924 was confirmed in the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Soldier Township. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and also a member of the Lutheran Layman League at Soldier.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Elsie in 1979; one sister, Leona Meseck and two grandchildren. Survivors include his children: Karen and her husband Paul Aschinger of Vail, Gailen Meseck and his wife Vickie of Charter Oak, Dennis Meseck and his wife, Georgia of Charter Oak, Georgene and her husband Mike Schaben of Defiance and Vickie and her husband Larry Flammang of Mapleton. Also surviving are 20 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Walter Meseck and his wife Vera of Charter Oak and three sisters, Esther Hennings of Ute, Eleonora Rabe of Ricketts and Erma Ockenga of Nevada, Iowa.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 24, 1989 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Soldier Township. Pastor S.W. Holstein officiated at the services with interment in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. Miss Brenda Meseck was organist and Mrs. Karen Mauser was soloist. Selections were "How Great Thou Art," and "The Old Rugged Cross." The congregational hymn was "Nearer My God to Thee." Serving as pallbearers were DuWayne Meseck, Lawrence Meseck, Deryl Hennings, Warren Hennings, Delbert Rabe and Milroy Rabe. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak, Iowa.

Kenneth Inghram Hutchinson (1917 - 1998)
Kenneth Inghram Hutchinson was born on a farm in Milford Township, Crawford County, Iowa, September 18, 1917, the only child of Georg Marion and Frances Myrtle Inghram Hutchinson. He was raised on the farm and received his education in the Milford Center School before being graduated as Valedictorian from the Denison High School with the Class of 1934. He furthered his education at Iowa State University, where he was a member of Delta Sigma Phi fraternity and was graduated with honors in 1939. Upon graduation he returned to the farm in Milford Township.On June 4, 1941, Kenneth was united in marriage with Mildred Ruth Crane at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Their union was blessed with five children, Kenneth E., Keith, Nancy, Kerry and Cherith. They farmed in Milford Township northeast of Denison, moving to their present farm in 1952. Kenneth took great pride in farming and was an avid practitioner of conservation methods to preserve the land for future generations. He raised Aberdeen Angus cattle and grew corn, soybeans, and other crops. Kenneth retired in 1982 but continued to reside on the farm. He maintained an active interest in the farm operations and particularly, enjoyed mowing the lawn, pruning the trees, and other yard work. Kenneth's greatest love in life was his family. He especially enjoyed raising their children and spending time with the grandchildren and with Milly's family.
He was an active member of the United Presbyterian Church in Vail where he had served as an Elder, Deacon and Clerk of the Session. For several years he served as a Director of the Federal Land Bank and from 1951 until his death he served on the Board of Directors of the Crawford County Trust and Savings Bank in Denison.
Kenneth died Wednesday morning, April 1, 1998 at St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 80 years, 6 months and 13 days. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Those who remain to cherish his memory include his wife of over 56 years, Milly Hutchinson of rural Denison; five children, Kenneth E. Hutchinson of San Jose, California; Keith Hutchinson and his wife, Glenda, of Lancaster, Texas; Nancy Hutchinson of Evansville, Indiana; Kerry Hutchinson of Roselle Park, New Jersey; Cherith and husband, Joseph Thelen, of rural Denison; seven grandchildren, Jeff Hutchinson of Richmond, Virginia, Ken Hutchinson attending Texas A&M University, Andria Hutchinson of White Plains, New York, and Christopher, Andy, Melissa and Danny Thelen of rural Denison; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, April 4, 1998 at the United Presbyterian Church, Vail, Iowa, with the Rev. Sue Babovec officiating. Music for the service included soloist, Glenn Freese, singing "How Great Thou Art" and "In The Garden" and the congregation singing "Amazing Grace" and "He Leadeth Me." Kevin Freese served as organist. Casket bearers included Frank Hawley, Henry Olson, LeRoy Childress, Terry Prickett, Roger Dreeszen and Glenn Schultz. Kenneth J. Thams (1912 - 1994)
Kenneth J. Thams was born November 23, 1912, the son of Herman and Paulina Schroeder Thams. He died at the Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa on Tuesday, October 25, 1994 at the age of eighty-one years.Kenny was born on a farm in Goodrich Township near Schleswig, Iowa. He attended school in Otter Creek Township and continued his education in the Schleswig Community High School where he graduated.
As a young man, he helped his father on the farm until 1934 when he started the Thams Insurance and Real Estate agency. In May 9, 1941, Kenny was drafted into the U.S. Army where he served his country during WWII. After completing his first tour of duty, he was returning home when Pearl Harbor was attacked by the Japanese. Kenny was then recalled to active duty and served his second tour of overseas duty. His service overseas lasted for more than two years and served in New Guinea and Luzon. He was decorated with the Good Conduct Medal, Bronze Arrowhead and the American Defense Service Ribbon. After completing his military duties on November 13, 1945, he returned home and continued his insurance and real estate agency.
On September 20, 1949, Kenny was united in marriage to Imelda Lengeling at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll, Iowa. The couple settled on the farm near Schleswig and were blessed with the birth of one son. Soon after their marriage, he opened his insurance real estate and investments firm at 21 Cedar St. in Denison where they remained until 1968 when they moved to their present location on Broadway.
Kenny was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison, their Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post No. 8 in Denison, the V.F.W. and American Legion Post 3930 in Schleswig and the Kiwanis Club in Denison.
He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Imelda, "Tootie" of Denison; one son Allen and his wife Judy of Denison; three grandchildren: Todd in Indianola and Troy and Traci at home.
Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Friday, October 28, 1994 at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison, Iowa. Fr. Andrew Hoffmann served as Celebrant with interment at Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig, Iowa. Jean Cornelius provided the organ accompaniment for the St. Rose of Lima Parish Choir. Honorary Pallbearers were: Clarence Friedrichsen, Murlin Jurgensen, Melvin Petersen, Harry Petersen, Wilbert Groth, Milroy Groth, Paul Schwanz and Earl Schmidt. Pallbearers were: American Legion Post and V.F.W. of Schleswig. Military Honors were: American Legion Post #645 and V.F.W. Post #3930, Schleswig. A Rosary was held at 4 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, October 27, 1994 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them for lunch at the parish center, served by the St. Rose of Lima Ladies Guild. Kenneth Justice (1910 - 1973)
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on January 18, 1973 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla for a well-known citizen of the community, Kenneth Justice, 62. Pastor Ronald E. Meyer officiated, Mrs. Marvin Kuhl, organist, accompanied the trio, Howard, Harry and Bill Ahrenholtz sang "I Know My Redeemer Lives," "What A Friend We Have in Jesus" and "How Great Thou Art." Casket bearers were Ted Krogh, Wayne Steckelberg, Harold Nieman, Wayne Justice, Richard Justice and Ray Jorgensen. Interment was in the Nishnabotna cemetery at Manilla.Kenneth, son of Ralph and Alta Chamberlain Justice, was born Feb. 11, 1910 at Panama. As a baby he moved to Defiance with his family; at the age of 9 to a farm near Manilla.
He was united in marriage with Katherine Krogh on Feb. 6, 1932 in Marysville, Mo. This union was blessed with a son and a daughter. They farmed in the vicinity of Defiance and Sac City before moving to the home farm place east of Manilla. They moved to Manilla about 10 years ago. Kenneth operated a feed store in Manilla until suffering a heart attack about six years ago when he was forced to retire.
He died suddenly on Monday morning, Jan. 15, 1973 at his farm at the age of 62 years, 11 months and four days. Kenneth was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla and of the Manilla Community Club. He was preceded in death by his father in 1970.
He is survived by his wife Katherine, his daughter Alta, Mrs. Merlin Nulle of Westside and his son Larry of rural Manilla, five grandchildren, his mother of Manilla and seven brothers, Earl of Urbana, Ill., Harold of Manilla, George of Botna, Amos of Red Oak, Clifford of Irwin, Russell of Irwin, and Howard of Ankeny, as well as many relatives and friends.

Laura M. Ruch (1910 - 1999)
Laura M. Ruch was born on a farm in Washington Township, east of Buck Grove, Iowa, December 28, 1910, the daughter of George and Salome Greder Ruch. She was received into God's Kingdom of Grace through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism at St. Peter and Paul Lutheran Church in Washington Township.Laura was raised on the family farm and received her education in the local rural schools. In 1928 the family moved to the farm they purchased south of Vail. For many years Laura lived and worked in California returning to Vail to care for her parents. In addition to caring for her parents she was employed at Marvin's Provisions in Vail for several years. Following retirement she resided in her own home in Vail until June of 1997 when she moved to Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison due to failing health.
Laura was an active member of her community when health permitted enjoying the quilting group and could be counted on to help in the kitchen at various community events. She loved children and was especially fond of her great nieces and nephews. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Vail and the Olive Branch Chapter No. 205, Order of Eastern Star, Vail, Iowa.
Laura died Tuesday afternoon, November 23, 1999 at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison. At the time of her death she had attained the age of 88 years, 10 months and 25 days.
Including her parents she was preceded in death by one sister, Margaret Farrell and two brothers, Walter and Arthur Ruch.
Those who remain to cherish her memory include two sisters-in-law, Leona "Jackie" Ruch and Doris Ruch both of Vail, Iowa, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 27, 1999 at the United Presbyterian Church in Vail, Iowa with the Rev. Sue Babovec officiating. Congregational hymns for the service included "How Great Thou Art," "Sweet Hour Of Prayer" and "Amazing Grace" with Ruth Noelck serving as organist. Casket bearers included Ron Ruch, Phil Ruch, Darrell Ruch, Scott Ruch, Randy Ruch, Mike Ruch and Ron Cornelius. Interment was at the Vail Cemetery, Vail, Iowa. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements where an Eastern Star service was held at 7:30 p.m., Friday, November 26, 1999, conducted by the Olive Branch Chapter No. 205, Order of Eastern Star, Vail, Iowa.

Laurence Thomas Griffin (1918 - 2003)
Laurence Thomas Griffin was born December 30, 1918, the son of Dennis and Edna McNertney Griffin. He died Sunday, August 3, 2003 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa at the age of eighty-four.Laurence was born in Denison, Iowa and received his education in a rural school near Buck Grove, Iowa. After completing his education he worked for area farmers and later in Sioux City at the air base, where he built runways.
On February 26, 1942, Laurence was united in marriage to Florence Riessen in Fremont, Nebraska. The couple made their home in Sioux City for two years, then moving back to the Denison area, where Laurence farmed and later went to work at World Wide until retiring. Laurence enjoyed fishing, reading, dancing to a good polka and watching old westerns and comic shows.
Laurence was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Clement and a great-granddaughter, Alena Montoya. Survivors include his wife, Florence of Denison; one daughter, Sharon Ross and her husband, Charles of Littleton, Colorado; three grandchildren, Brenda Vogt and her husband, Mark of Aurora, Colorado; Carla Knoblauch and her husband, Rick of Apache Junction, Arizona; Charles Ross Jr. and his wife, Jody of Littleton, Colorado; five great-grandchildren, Ron Montoya, Crista Montoya, Katie Vogt, Lindsay Vogt and Corey Ross; three sisters, Denise Watje of Denison; Eileen Heiden of Denison; Theresa Rohr of Cleveland, Ohio; one brother, Joe Griffin and his wife, Betty of Denison; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, August 7, 2003 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Gordon Buchholz officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig, Iowa. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Larry Boeck as he sang "What a Friend We Have in Jesus." The congregational hymns were "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Nearer, My God, to Thee." Honorary Pallbearers were Donald Watje and Mike Riessen. Those serving as pallbearers were: Don DeMey, Jr., Jerald Riessen, James Clark, John Halbur, Jay Heiden and Kevin Jahn. Laverna F. (Hansen) Jensen (1911 - 1994)
Laverna F. Jensen was born November 22, 1911, the daughter of Tony and Mary Janssen Hansen. She died at the Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove on Sunday, May 22, 1994 at the age of eighty-two years.Laverna was born on the family farm in Ida County. She was baptized in 1912 and later confirmed at the Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Church in Schleswig, by the Rev. Mauch. She received her education in rural schools near her home and subsequently helped her family on the farm.
January 18, 1933, Laverna was united in marriage to Walter Jensen in Schleswig. The couple settled on his family farm and were blessed with the birth of two children. In 1949, Walter died and Laverna remained on the farm until August of 1963 when she moved to Schleswig. She then became employed at the kitchen for seventeen years. In May of 1985 she moved to the Schleswig Retirement Apartments.
Laverna was a loving and devoted wife and mother who took pride in caring for her family. In her leisure time she enjoyed quilting and cooking and had fond memories of the years she worked at the school. She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig; their Ladies Guild; the senior citizens group; and the Schleswig farmetts.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Survivors include: two sons, Dale and his wife, Pat of Schleswig, Dennis and his wife, Karen of Arvada, CO; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; one brother, Orville Hansen and his wife, Irene of Schleswig; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 26, 1994 at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, with Rev. Russell Duncan officiating the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Dorothy Jessen provided the organ accompaniment for soloist Rubie Kastner singing "In the Garden" and "Nearer, My God, to Thee." Pallbearers were: Norman Friedrichsen, Leon Clausen, Roger Friedrichsen, Alan Sedore, Dennis Bruhn and Lowell Teut. LaVerne Helen (Hamann) Spack (1912 - 1993)
LaVerne Helen Spack was born June 14, 1912, the daughter of Albert and Dora Kuhl Hamann. She died at the Manilla Manor on Monday, Nov. 8, 1993, at the age of 81 years.LaVerne was born on a farm near Manilla. She was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla and later confirmed there. She received her education in the Manilla Community School and graduated from there with the class of 1930.
After completing her education, LaVerne worked at the Bliesman Candy Kitchen in Denison until she was united in marriage to Elmer Spack on June 27, 1932, in Elk Point, S.D. The couple settled in Denison and were blessed with the birth of two children. They began farming north of Deloit in 1938, later in Grand Junction and the Boyer area. In 1960, they moved to Boyer, where they owned and operated the Spack Lounge until retiring in 1975. In 1980, LaVerne moved to Denison until entering the Manilla Manor in August of 1990.
LaVerne was a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother, who enjoyed occupying her free time with cooking and sewing. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Kiron, their Ladies Aid, and Quilting Circle.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Elmer in 1980, and one brother, Elmer.
Survivors include one son, Kay Spack and his wife, Ruth of Point Arena, Calif.; one daughter, Lynne Gronau and her husband, Abe of Schleswig; also seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; four sisters-in-law, Lou Hamann of Denison, Shirley Spack of Manning, Arlene Jensen of Manning and Esther Jochimsen of Charter Oak.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 11 at the St. John's Lutheran Church in Kiron, with Reverend Hilmer Hafner officiating the service and grave side rites held at the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery at Kiron. La Verne Minnie (Holtorf) Kragel (1914 - 1990)
La Verne Minnie Kragel was born March 8, 1914 on a farm near Ute, Iowa, the daughter of William and Lena Goslar Holtorf. She died Aug. 2, 1990 at the Denison Care Center in Denison, Iowa at the age of 76 years.La Verne grew up on the family farm north of Ute and attended a rural school and later furthered her education at St. Paul's Lutheran School in Ute. After completing her education, she helped on the family farm.
On January 28, 1932, La Verne was united in marriage to Paul Kragel of Charter Oak, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ute. This union was blessed with five children. They made their home on a farm south of Charter Oak where together they resided for over forty years. After retiring from the farm they moved to Charter Oak, making this their home until May, 1989 when she entered the Denison Care Center.
La Verne was baptized March 24, 1914 and later reaffirmed her faith in Christ April 11, 1927 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ute. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak at the time of her death.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Ruth Borcherdt; one grandson, Dustin White; and one brother-in-law, Marlin Kragel.
Survivors include her husband, Paul Kragel, Sr. of the Denison Care Center; her children, Paul Jr. and his wife, Bernadine of Schleswig; Gary and his wife, Vernetta of Smithland; Larry of Charter Oak; Mary Ann Kragel of Charter Oak; Marlene and her husband, Wesley White of Denver, Colo.; and Mark of Sioux City. Also surviving are twelve grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; one sister, Edna Kragel of Charter Oak and one brother, Walter Holtorf and his wife, Maurine of Denison.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 6, 1990 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak with Pastor L.C. Gebhardt and Vicar Andrew Currao officiating. Mrs. L.C. Gebhardt was organist and Henry Henningsen was soloist. Solo selections were: "How Great Thou Art" and "Abide With Me." The congregational hymn was "I'm But a Stranger Here." Interment was in the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery at Charter Oak. Honorary pallbearers were Donald and Marlene McCall. Lavern Anna Susie (Schmidt) Zage (1917 - 2006)
Lavern Anna Susie Zage was born February 12, 1917, the daughter of Albert and Hulda Peters Schmidt. She died at the Denison Care Center, Saturday, March 25, 2006 at the age of eighty-nine.Lavern was born in Goodrich Township, Crawford County, Iowa, and was baptized in Christ; April 15, 1917 at Zion Lutheran Church, Denison, and on March 29, 1931 she was confirmed there by Pastor William Frese. Lavern grew up on the family farm and received her education in a rural school near her home.
On March 16, 1937, Lavern was united in marriage to Fred A. Zage by Pastor William Frese. They made their home on a farm in Otter Creek Township and remained there for twenty-six years. They moved to Denison in 1963. Fred passed away January 27, 1991.
Lavern was employed at Johnson Drug, cooking and baking for their lunch counter, and also at Auld's Greenhouse. What Lavern enjoyed the most was being a good homemaker; she was especially fond of flowers and gardening, baking and decorating cakes, sewing and tending to her pet Kitty. In her younger years she loved to play the accordion. Lavern was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. On June 7, 2000, she moved to the Denison Care Center.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; sister, Vernetta Paulsen; brother, Ronald Schmidt; sister-in-law, Adela Holtman and her husband, Carl; and brother-in-law, Marvin Zage.
Survivors include, nieces, nephews: Roseann and Reynold Gehlsen of Denison; Ronald and Faylene Paulsen of Charter Oak; Dorothy and Delaine Listamann of Denison; Beverly Nelson of Ida Grove; Larry Schmidt of Marina, California; sister-in-law, Leila Zage of Schleswig; her special friends, Ray & Della Fouts of Dunlap; great-nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Lavina Barbara (Stoltz) Roecker (1910 - 2006)
Lavina Barbara Roecker was born on September 12, 1910, on a farm near Portsmouth, Iowa to Michael and Josephine Meier Stoltz. She died Sunday, December 31, 2006 at the Denison Care Center in Denison, Iowa at the age of ninety-six years, three months and nineteen days.Lavina was one of thirteen children. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary's Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Iowa. She attended school at St. Boniface Catholic School in Westphalia, Iowa.
On August 26, 1930, Lavina was united in marriage to Frank C. Roecker at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Defiance, Iowa. To this union five children were born. Following their wedding, the couple resided on various farms near Defiance and Manilla, Iowa. In 1946, they purchased a farm near Schleswig, Iowa, where they lived until retiring in 1966 when they moved to Schleswig.
She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. She enjoyed playing the organ and dancing. She loved gardening and canning and was an excellent cook. Lavina was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Charter Oak until making her home at the Reed House in Denison in August of 1998. She then became a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frank in 1969. Also three sons Norbert, Marvin and Rolland; two grandchildren Doug and Sheri; one great-granddaughter; one step-son Donald; step-son-in-law Harold Schroeder; and one step-great-grandson; brothers Frank, George and Bernard; sisters Lena, Mathilda, Mary, Rose, Ann, Lenora, Eva, Margaret and Helen.
She is survived by her children Kenneth Roecker of Schleswig; Charla Knapp and her husband, Munn of Plattsmouth, Nebraska; three daughters-in-law, Theda Roecker of Syracuse, Nebraska; Linda Roecker of Story City, Iowa; and Diane Roecker of Des Moines; step-daughters Edna Schroeder of Denison; Norma Rowedder and her husband, Ivan of Schleswig. Also step-daughter-in-law, Joyce Roecker of Manning; eighteen grandchildren; twenty-seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; nine step-grandchildren; thirteen step-great-grandchildren and two step-great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Anita (Ludeman) Rath (1915 - 1988)
Anita Rath was born on July 15, 1915 in Schleswig-Holstein, West Germany, the daughter of Henry and Louise Thomas Ludeman. She died on June 29, 1988 at the Bishop Clarkson Hospital in Omaha, Neb., at the age of 72 years, 11 months and 14 days.Anita spent her early childhood years on a farm in West Germany. She was baptized as an infant and was confirmed on May 17, 1929 in the Lutheran faith in Germany. When she was 14 years old she and her family immigrated to the United States. Anita became a citizen of the United States on January 4, 1940.
She was united in marriage to Werner Rath of Denison on August 10, 1936 at Yankton, S.D. Together they made their home on a farm near Denison for 49 years. Anita and Werner moved to Denison in 1985 where she lived at the time of her death. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.
Anita was preceded in death by her father, Henry Ludeman and her husband Werner, who passed away on December 27, 1985. She is survived by one son; Robert and his wife Darlene of Houston, Texas; three daughters: Karen and her husband Darrell Slechta of Denison, Donna and her husband Everett Miller of Denison, Cindy and her husband Terrence Ross of Columbus, Neb.; and her mother Louise Ludeman of Denison.
Also surviving are 11 grandchildren and 6 step grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one step great-grandchild, one sister, Magda and her husband Leslie Sahl of Denison and one brother, Ernest Ludeman and his wife Violet of Nevada, Ia.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 2, 1988 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Pastor Kurt Kaiser officiated at the services and grave side rites at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Edna (Toll) Kelm (1915 - 1994)
Edna Koeppen Kelm was born June 14, 1915, the daughter of Eskil and Alvena Samuelson Toll. She died at the Marian Health Center in Sioux City, Ia., Monday, July 4, 1994 at the age of seventy-nine years.Edna was born in Huron, South Dakota, where she was baptized in Christ. At a young age, she moved with her parents to Charter Oak, Ia. Where she received her education in the Charter Oak Community Schools, and graduated from Charter Oak High School with the Class of 1933. She was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at the St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak.
On August 30, 1933, Edna was united in marriage to Louis Koeppen. The couple settled on a farm near Castana and were blessed with the birth of four daughters. While on the farm, Edna enjoyed occupying her time caring for her flower and vegetable gardens, crocheting and socializing with family and friends at dances. Christmas time was her favorite season of the year.
In 1965, the couple retired from farming and moved to Mapleton in 1966. On December 20, 1969 Louis died. On December 7, 1974, Edna was united in marriage to Louie Kelm and the couple remained in Charter Oak. Edna was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, the Clubetts, Sunshine Club, an active member of the Senior Citizens Center, the LLL and VOCO.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Louis Koeppen and Louie Kelm; one sister, Mildred and her stepfather, Clarence Brockman.
Survivors include four daughters, Marlene Marth and her husband, Ed of Ricketts, Shirley Dunlop and her husband, Bill of Moorhead, Marge Thiel and her husband, Harry of Glendale, Ariz., Jan Yockey and her husband, Jimmie of Smithland; and one step-son, Ronald Kelm and his family of Charter Oak. Other survivors include twelve grandchildren; three step grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren; and three step great grandchildren; one sister, Esther Pithan of Longview, Wash., and other family members and friends.

Edna Luella (Asmus) Wolfe (1911 - 1997)
Edna Luella Wolfe was born May 23, 1911, the daughter of William Henry and Anna Matilda Schurke Asmus. She died Monday, December 8, 1997 at the Crawford County Hospital in Denison, Iowa, at the age of eighty-six.Edna was born on a farm west of Denison, where she lived with her parents. She was baptized in Christ, August 6, 1911 at the Zion Lutheran Church, Denison, Iowa and later confirmed on March 28, 1926 in Charter Oak, Iowa. Edna received her education in a rural school in Paradise Township and at the Zion Lutheran School, Denison.
She was united in marriage to Peter Carstensen in 1927 and to this union three children were born, Willis, Donna and Donald.
In 1931, Edna was united in marriage to Clarence Ransom and the couple were blessed with the birth of seven sons, Kenneth, Bob, Larry, Tom, Darold, Dale and Jim and seven daughters, Norma, Carol, Janis, Marvel, Diane, Julie and Darlyne. In 1972, Edna was united in marriage to Joseph Wolfe.
Edna was a life long member of Zion Lutheran Church, Denison. She was a very loving and caring mother, grandmother and great grandmother who loved having her family and friends around her and looked forward to Sunday dinners with them. She always had an open door to anyone in need of a place to stay or something to eat. Edna enjoyed cooking, flowers, watching birds and squirrels from her window at home and had a great sense of humor and enjoyed telling jokes.
Edna was preceded in death by her parents; her step-mother, Maurine (Miller) Asmus; her husbands, Peter Carstensen; Clarence Ransom and Joseph Wolfe; four sons, Donald, Darold, Dale and Jun; one daughter, Darlyne; six step-sons, Earl, William, Clarence Jr and George Ransom, Jack and Orville Wolfe; two step-daughters, Beulah Wolfe and Evelyn Schultz; five brothers, Edward, William, Alfred, Marvin and Loren Asmus; one sister, Elfrieda Hopp; three half-brothers, Harold, DeWaine and Ervin Asmus; one half-sister, Mary Ann (Asmus) Sterud.
Survivors include, five sons, Willis Carstensen and his wife, Joleen; Kenneth and his wife, Beulah; and Bob, all of Denison; Larry of Manning; Tom and his wife, Dianna of Deloit; seven daughters, Donna Kroll of Denison; Norma Bean and her husband Paul; and Carol Goeppner all of Fort Dodge; Janis Woods and her husband, Junior of Rose Hill; Marvel Bruning and her husband, Ron; Diane Schloesser and her husband, Melvin; Julie Jepsen and her husband, Dennis, all of Denison; one step-son, Virgil Wolfe of Sacramento, California; four step-daughters, Vera Jentz and her husband, Bill of Westside; Ellen Lahr and her husband, Dean of Dow City; Goldie Anderson of Nevada; Maxine Hobsen of Ames; one half-brother, Alvin Asmus and his wife, Eleanor of Brookings, South Dakota; three half-sisters, Arlene Kutz and her husband, Kenneth of Brookings, South Dakota; LaVon Lane her husband, Brian of Flandreau, South Dakota; Lois Teal and her husband, Roger of Brookings, South Dakota; fifty-eight grandchildren; ninty-nine great-grandchildren and sixteen great-great-grandchildren. Edna was a wonderful mother, who was always there for her children and will be greatly missed.
Funeral services were held at 11a.m., Thursday, December 11, 1997 at Zion Lutheran Church, Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. Daniel Gifford officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Oakland Cemetery, Denison. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Henry Henningsen, singing "The Old Rugged Cross", "Amazing Grace" and congregation hymn "What a Friend We Have in Jesus". Pallbearers were: Derek Schloesser, Shane Ransom, Scott Jepsen, Tim Tornow, T.J. Ransom and Rick Smith. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Dorcas Society. Edna Mae (Ewoldt) Hester (1918 - 1989)
Note: Year of death was shown on her husband's (Edward) obituary as October 6, 1989. It was not shown on newspaper clipping of her obituary..Edna Mae Hester, the daughter of Henry C. and Alvina Puck Ewoldt, was born on Jan. 12, 1918, in Hayes Township, Crawford County, Ia. She grew up in the Aspinwall area, attending the rural schools. She helped in the family home as well as various other homes in the area as needed.
On Feb. 15, 1945, Edna and Edward Hester were united in marriage in the United Methodist Parsonage in Denison. This union was blessed with one daughter. Edna and Edward made their home in Buck Grove for 44 years. She worked for the Longnecker Produce Station in Manilla for nine years.
Edna was baptized in the Lutheran faith as an infant and became a member of the Methodist Church in 1945. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in 1945. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Dow City at the time of her death.
Preceding Edna in death were; her parents; one brother, Ralph Ewoldt; and one nephew, Dennis Ewoldt.
Survivors include her husband Edward of Buck Grove; one daughter, Darlene Hester of Buck Grove; one brother, Albert Ewoldt and his wife LaVerna of Denison; two sisters, LaVerne Kohnekamp of Charter Oak and Arla and her husband, Walter Hansohn of Kiron; and one sister-in-law, Helen Hester of Denison.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, at the United Methodist Church in Dow City. Rev. Emmanuel Tabelisma officiated at the services with interment in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Mrs. Gaylord Sliefert was organist. The congregational hymns were "How Great Thou Art", "Amazing Grace" and "In The Garden". Servicing as pallbearers were Arlo Clausen, Dale Ewoldt, Albert Hester, Theodore Miller, Ralph Hansohn and Emery Christoffersen. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison.

Edna M. (Gran) Stockfleth (1919 - 1995)
Edna M. Stockfleth was born July 28, 1919, the daughter of Christian and Maude Braden Gran. She died on Wednesday, January 4, 1995, at the Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, Iowa at the age of seventy-five years.She was born on the family farm, near Soldier, Iowa where she lived with her parents. She was baptized as an infant and later confirmed on December 3, 1933 at the Soldier Lutheran Church in Soldier, Iowa. Edna received her education at a rural school near her home and graduated from the Soldier High School with the class of 1936. After receiving her Teaching Certificate from the Normal College in Cedar Falls, she taught in various Monona County rural schools for several years.
On February 26, 1944, Edna was united in marriage to Elmer Stockfleth at the Lutheran Parsonage in Ute. The couple settled on a farm near Ute and subsequently moved to Mapleton and were blessed with the birth of two children. Edna and Elmer moved to the Schleswig area in 1950 where they farmed until Elmer's death. Edna was employed by the Schleswig Public School, where she worked in the office for fifteen years and was awarded a plaque in recognition to her efforts.
Edna was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig and past president of their Ladies Aid. She was also a member of the Crawford County Hospital Auxiliary and an officer of the Schleswig V.F.W. Auxiliary.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Elmer, in 1971. Survivors include two sons, Dale and his wife, Holly of Lenexa, Kansas and Roger of Schleswig; one granddaughter, Heidi Stockfleth of Lenexa, Kansas; two brothers, Roy Gran of Lake View; Merrill Gran and his wife, Bette Jo of Soldier and four sisters, Lillian Gran of Mapleton; Dorothy Jahn and her husband, Ervin of Gillette, Wyoming; Beulah Jespersen and her husband, Bud of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Nadine Friedrichs and her husband, Don of Charter Oak and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, January 9, 1995 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa with Rev. Donald Wagner officiating the service and grave side rites held at the St. Clair Cemetery in Ute, Iowa. Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for Roger Walter's solos of "How Great Thou Art" and "I'm But A Stranger Here". Pallbearers were: Craig Friedrichs, Neil Stockfleth, Edwin Rusch, Bruce Hanneman, Elmer Reimer and Jim Gran. The Immanuel Lutheran Ladies Aid served a lunch at the church for all in attendance at the service and grave side rites. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of the arrangements.

Edna Sophie Josephine Beermann (1911 - 1993)
Edna Sophie Josephine Beermann was born in September 17, 1911, the daughter of Carl and Ida Krauel Beermann. She died on Tuesday, September 7, 1993 at the Jenny Edmundsen Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa at the age of eighty-one years.Edna was born in East Boyer Township, Crawford County, Iowa and received her education in a rural school near her home. She was baptized on October 15, 1911 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and confirmed there on April 13, 1924 by Rev William Frese. After completing her education, she remained on the family farm until November 1974, when she moved to her present home in Denison.
She was happiest with her family at reunions, she enjoyed the out of doors, working with livestock and socializing with her friends at the Senior Center. She was a life long member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.
She was preceded in death by her parents one brother, and two sisters. She is survived by cousins, relatives and many friends that loved her very much.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, September 9, 1993 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa, Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. Philip E. Bloch officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Denison. Martha Bloch provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "How Great Thou Art", "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and "I Know That My Redeemer Lives" Pallbearers were: Herschel Gabrielson, Harveu Neumann, Harold Beermann, Walter Beermann, Clarence Denker and Maclyn LaRue. Edward Bartel Wigg (1918 - 2006)
Edward Bartel Wigg was born October 31, 1918 the son of Ole and Marie Christensen Wigg. He died Sunday, March 5, 2006 at the Morningside Rehab and Care Center in Ida Grove, Iowa at the age of eighty-seven.Edward was born in Manilla, Iowa and was baptized May 11, 1919 in the Astor Church in Astor Iowa and later confirmed on October 31, 1937 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. He received his education in the Manilla and Nishnabotna Community Schools.
On February 16, 1941, Edward was united in marriage to Lucinda Heide. The couple made their home on various farms in the Schleswig and Ricketts area. In 1975 they moved into their new home in Schleswig, which they built themselves. Edward owned and operated Ed's Seamless Gutters from 1976 until 1984. After he retired, Edward worked as a handy-man fixing, repairing and building new furniture for family and friends until 2004. He made curio cabinets for his children and all of his grandchildren. He made a baby crib for the great-granddaughters and crafted wooden barns for the great-grandsons. In the winters when his garage was too cold for him to work in, he quilted. He made numerous quilts for all of his family members.
Edward was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. He was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who loved spending time with his family. He enjoyed camping, fishing, dancing and bowling. Edward and Lucinda bowled in the Ricketts Lanes on a mixed couple's team for twenty-eight years. Edward also enjoyed watching baseball and football games on television and listening to Polka music on the radio. On February 16, 2006, Edward and Lucinda were blessed with sixty-five years of marriage.
Preceding Edward in death were his parents; one daughter, Gladys Wigg; two sisters, Helen Hultsch and her husband, Larry; Twyla Messenbrink and her husband, Jarvis; and brother-in-law, Raynor Schlimmer.
Survivors include his wife Lucinda of Schleswig; two sons Glenn Wigg and his wife, Jerrie of Schleswig; Dale Wigg and his wife, Bonnie of Sioux City; one daughter, Beverly Peters and her husband, Gary of Schleswig; nine grandchildren, Bambi Schrader and her husband, David of Story City; Brandon Wigg and his wife, Katja of Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri; Bridget Baer and her husband, Dennis Bonderant; Brett Wigg and his wife Julie of DesMoines; Shelly Kinch and her husband, John of Frisco, Texas; Jaysen Wigg and his wife, Lisa of Garland, Texas; Shawn Peters and his wife, Roshanne of Platte City, Missouri; Heidi Tessler and her husband, Brian of Cedar Falls; and Dirk Peters and his wife, Andrea of Des Moines; nineteen great-grandchildren; one sister, Vera Schlimmer of Cedar Falls; one sister-in-law, Luella Neubauer and her husband, Leslie of Battle Creek; many other relatives and friends.

Merle Mahnken officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Edward E. Baak (1913 - 1998)
Edward E. Baak was born September 7, 1913, the son of Richard and Ida Rickert Baak. He died Wednesday, October 28, 1998 at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, at the age of 85.Known as Ed to his family and friends, he was born on the family farm, two miles west of Ricketts. He was baptized in Christ, September 28, 1913, and later confirmed in the Lutheran Faith, April 10, 1927, and also received his education at Immanuel Lutheran School.
Edward helped his father farm and began his career repairing farm machinery at the age of thirteen. In 1934, he was united in marriage to Elsie Hesse, of Mapleton, and they were blessed with the birth of four children. In 1956, Elsie died after suffering a long illness.
In 1941, Edward was drafted by the war board to repair farm machinery. He was authorized priority to purchase tools and parts through the war board. He continued farming the family farm and also did custom threshing with his father and Uncle Ernst.
In 1957, Ed was united in marriage to Phyllis Kunze Gloede. She and her five children joined Ed on the family farm, and they were blessed with the birth of two children.
Also, in 1957, Ed started buying used tractors, which he overhauled and repainted. He sold over 2,200 used tractors. He truly enjoyed working in his machine shop where he machined parts that could not be purchased. It was often said that if he couldn't find the part, he would make it. In 1969, Ed moved his implement dealership and repair shop into Charter Oak. After retiring in 1987, he continued occupying his time selling his farm machinery and continued using his machine shop skill designing and making many wood crafts.
On October 25, 1993 Edward suffered a stroke and had resided at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Elsie; children Richard and Beverly and one grandson, Scott Gloede.
Survivors include his wife, Phyllis, nine children, Maureen Petersen and husband, Larry, Ron Gloede and wife, Judy, all of Charter Oak; Kathleen Schau and husband, Irv of Cedar Rapids; Roger Gloede and wife, Tracey of North Sioux City, South Dakota; Drene Briggle and husband, Paul of Ricketts; Allen Gloede of Omaha; Randy Gloede of Phoenix, Arizona; Pam Tripp and husband, Tony of Charter Oak; Tami Baak and friend, Kevin of North Sioux City, South Dakota; nineteen grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Esther Hannemann and husband, Raymond of Oregon City, Oregon and one niece, Anita Hannemann of Canby, Oregon; a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., Friday, October 30, 1998 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Soldier Township, Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. Eugene Ernst officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Charter Oak. Rachel Greene provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns, "Just As I Am, Without One Plea", "I'm But a Stranger Here", and "Go My Children With Thy Blessing." Edward Eldridge Hester (1911 - 1994)
Edward Eldridge Hester was born on November 12, 1911 to Albert and Emma Frey Hester in Washington Township, Crawford County, Ia., one mile west of Buck Grove. He died Tuesday, November 15, 1994 at the Manilla Manor in Manilla at the age of 83 years.As a child he moved with his family in Crawford County. He attended rural schools near his home. He graduated from eighth grade, on February 15, 1945. He was united in marriage to Edna Ewoldt at the Denison Methodist Parsonage. After their marriage, they moved back to Buck Grove. To this union one daughter was born.
He was employed by Longneckers Produce Station for five years. In 1955 he then was employed by the Milwaukee Railroad in Manilla. He retired on the railroad in 1975. He also served on the Buck Grove City Council. He was a member of the Dow City Methodist Church. Due to failing health he entered the Manilla Manor on August 3, 1990.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Edna on October 6, 1989; one brother, Ralph and one niece in infancy. Survivors include one daughter, Darlene of Buck Grove; four sisters-in-law, Helen Hester of Denison, Laverna Ewoldt of Denison, LuVerne Kohnekamp of Charter Oak and Arla Hansohn and her husband Walter of Kiron.
Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday November 18, 1994 at the United Methodist Church in Dow City, with Rev. Richard Russell officiating the service and graveside rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Edward Herman Albert Hansohn (1912 - 1997)
Edward Herman Albert Hansohn was born May 31, 1912, the son of Henry A. and Ida Schultz Hansohn. He died on Thursday, November 27, 1997 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa at the age of eighty-five.Edward was born on a farm in Stockholm Township, near Kiron,, Iowa and was baptized in Christ June 30, 1912 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Stockholm Township and later confirmed there on March 28, 1928. He received his education at the Stockholm No. 4 School and after receiving his education he helped on the family farm. Edward's brothers were in the service at this time and much of the farm work depended on him, along with all the mechanical work. Edward was an Archer Oil representative for many years.
On November 23, 1948, Edward was united in marriage to Jean Ann Mayer at the St. Peter and St. Paul Catholic Church in Carroll. The couple settled on the family farm until 1965 moving north of Kiron to farm. Edward and Jean Ann enjoyed going to Carroll County and dining with the Mayer family and socializing in a game of cards. Jean Ann died in April of 1972 and Edward moved to Kiron in 1976. He continued to farm until poor health forced his retirement in 1996. On December 10, 1997, Edward was united in marriage to Velma Jacoby at the St Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Denison.
Edward was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Kiron. He was a loving and caring father, grandfather and brother. He was a very particular farmer and his family was the first to own a four row corn planter in Crawford County. Edward enjoyed bailing hay and fixing machinery. He also enjoyed listening to the weather and news every morning and watching trains.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Jean Ann in 1972, his wife Velma in 1992, and one brother, Raymond in infancy and one sister-in-law, Ima Jean Hansohn.
Survivors include one son Allen Hansohn and his wife, Sandy of Denison; two step-sons, Dennis Jacoby and his wife, Ilene of Omaha; Duane Jacoby and his wife, Kathy of Denison; one step-daughter, Pat Messenbrink and her husband, David of Omaha; two grandchildren, Jennifer and Brianna of Denison; eight step grandchildren and four step-great grandchildren; two brothers, LeRoy Hansohn; Walter Hansohn and his wife Arla, all of Kiron; also many other relatives and friends.
