Edna Dorothy (Meggers) Igou (1912 - 1981)

Edna Dorothy Igou was born on May 21, 1912, in Goodrich Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the daughter of Alfred and Elizabeth Jaacks Meggers. She died May 2, 1981 at the Denison Care Center, Denison, at the age of 68.

Edna spent her early years on a family farm. She received her formal education in the rural schools near her home. She was baptized and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith.

On Oct. 20, 1937, Edna was united in marriage to Albert Igou at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Together they made their first home in Dow City. Later they farmed near Denison until 1965 when they moved into Denison. Edna became a resident of the Denison Care Center due to ill health.

In addition to her parents, Edna was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward and Marvin and one brother and two sisters in infancy.

Survivors include her husband, Albert of Denison, two sons, Wayne of Denison and Gerald of LaPorte, Ind., and one grandson. Also by two brothers, Emil Meggers of Denison and Leonard Meggers of Dow City and four sisters, Mrs. Minnie Frank of Denison, Magdaline, Mrs. Ed Christiansen of Dow City, Irene, Mrs. Fred Jepsen of Schleswig, and Esther, Mrs. Leonard Namanny of Denison.

Funeral services were held May 5, at 10:30 a.m. at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Burial was in the Dow City Cemetery. The Rev. Jack Hecke of Zion Lutheran Church officiated at the services. Pallbearers include Melvin Hagge, Joe Clinton, Denny Fletcher, Chuck West, Ed Blackman and Dan Greene. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Edna Minna Anna (Fick) Barnes (1910 - 1970)

Edna Minna Anna Barnes, the daughter of Karl and Elizabeth Fick, was born July 2, 1910 at Huron, South Dakota and died on Monday, April 20, 1970 at the Mapleton Nursing Home after a lingering illness. She had reached the age of 59 years, nine months and 18 days.

When a young child she came with her parents to Iowa to a farm southeast of Mapleton. It was here that she made her home until her marriage on January 20, 1932. She married Herman Meyer.

She and her husband farmed in the Ricketts Community. On August 6, 1947 Herman died. It was the next year that she moved to a farm near Ute and lived there the remainder of her life.

On November 18, 1955 she was united in marriage to Clarence Barnes at Dakota City, Nebraska.

Edna was baptized on August 7, 1910 at Huron, South Dakota, and was confirmed into the Christian Faith on March 28, 1926 at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church at Mapleton.

Survivors include her husband, Clarence of Ute; three brothers, Herman of Schleswig, Carl, of Oakland, Iowa and Ernest of Anthon; four sisters, Mrs. Emil (Alvina) Miller of Sioux City, Mrs. Elsie Cooper, Anthon, Mrs. Walter (Hilda) Kollbaum, Anthon, and Mrs. Arnold (Clara) Hahn of Sioux City. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her first husband.

Services were held Thursday, April 23, 1970 at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Matthew's Lutheran Church with Rev. E.E. Greene officiating. Burial was in St. Clair Cemetery in Ute, Iowa. Pallbearers were Richard Nagel, Harold Fick, Leonard Miller, Garry Kollbaum, Dale Nelson and Dennis Olson.

Edward Frederick Schramm (abt. 1928 - 1964)

Funeral services for Edward Frederick Schramm, 36, were held Dec. 11 (1964) at the Good Shepard Lutheran church in Inglewood, Calif. Interment was in the Live Oak cemetery in Monrovia, Calif.

Son of Elle Schramm and the late Edward Schramm, he was received as a child of God through the sacrament of Holy baptism and later was confirmed in the Zion Lutheran church in Denison. After schooling, he served four years in the Army. After leaving the service he was employed at Denison Auto Co. until they moved to California four years ago, where he was employed as assistant parts manager at West Adams Chevrolet Co. until his death, resulting from a one car accident.

He was united in marriage on June 11, 1949 to Lois Irene Fritz of Deloit. To this union two children were born, Dennis 13, and Cynthia Rae 11 years old.

Survivors include his wife, Lois, two children, his mother, Mrs. Ella Schramm of Denison and six sisters, Mrs. Virgil (Marie) McCold, Mrs. Clarence (Eleanor) Muller, Mrs. Lorraine Gunderson and Mrs. Harold (Irene) Eggert, all of Denison, Mrs. Ray (Hattie) Myers, Mrs. Ted (Vera Mae) McLean, both of Arcadia, Calif. and a host of other relatives and friends.

Edward Peter Petersen (1906 - 1981)

Edward Peter Petersen was born on March 11, 1906 near Ute, Iowa, the son of Amos and Bertha Zage Petersen. He died July 7, 1981 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison at the age of 75.

Edward moved with his family at an early age to Crawford County. He spent his early years on a family farm. Edward received his formal education in the rural schools near his home as well as the Zion Lutheran School in Denison.

On Feb. 10, 1932, Edward was united in marriage to Anna Meents at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Together they farmed in Crawford County all of Edward's working career. In 1976, they retired continuing to make their home on the farm near Vail.

Edward was baptized as an infant and later during the years of his education was confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.

In addition to his parents, Edward was preceded in death by one brother Jurgen and one sister Minnie.

Survivors include his wife Anna of Vail, one son Delano of Vail, one daughter Delores, Mrs. Ken Ries of Ames and six grandchildren. Also by three brothers, John of Lake View, Lawrence and Carl, both of Schleswig and one sister, Mrs. Adeline Jaacks of Denison.

Funeral services were held July 9, at 2 p.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Burial was in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens. The Rev. Jack Heck officiated at the services. Pallbearers were Eddie Ries, Ron Ries, Tom Ries, Daniel Paulsen, Ray Pollock and Jim Aldag. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Edward William Eggert (1923 - 1978)

Edward William Eggert was born on April 10, 1923, near Denison, Iowa, the son of William and Emma Vogt Eggert. He died on Saturday afternoon, February 11, 1978 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital after a long illness at the age of 54.

Edward was raised on a family farm in Hanover Township and received his formal education in the rural schools of the area. On September 24, 1944, he was united in marriage to Elaine Creese at Zion Lutheran Church, Denison, Iowa. Together they made their home on the farm where Edward was raised. In 1973 he retired from the farm and moved to Denison. He worked for the Denison Park Commission as caretaker of Union Park and for the City of Denison in the winter months.

Edward was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Denison. He was baptized on June 5, 1923 and later confirmed on April 5, 1936, at Zion Lutheran Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother Raymond.

Survivors include his wife Elaine of Denison, one son Donald and his wife Georgene and two grandsons, Mike and Mark. Also by five sisters, Hilda, Mrs. Leonard Mahnke, Viola, Mrs. Carl Miller, Edaline, Mrs. Art Boettger, Loretta, Mrs. Alfred Petersen, and Jeanie, Mrs. Marland Mork all of Denison.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, February 14, 1978, at 10:30 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Denison, Iowa. Burial was in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens. The Rev. Victor Hoyer officiated at the services. Pallbearers included Charles Petersen, Jerry Boettger, Steve Mork, Ronald Miller, Kevin Creese and Carl Pearson. Honorary pallbearers included Erwin Kiepe, Raymond Frederick, Clarence Schillerberg, Vernon Schroeder, Vincent Keating and Edward Abbott.

E. Edmund Riddle (1925 - 1981)

Edmund Riddle was born on Dec. 4, 1925 near Dow City, Iowa, the son of Elmer and Esther Turnlund Riddle. He died April 19, 1981 at Eventide Lutheran Home, Denison, at the age of 55, after a long illness.

Edmund spent his early years on a family farm near Dow City. He received his education in the Dow City Public Schools, graduating from the Dow City High School in 1944. Edmund spent his entire working career farming. After his father's death he continued to farm his family home place with his mother. In 1966 he retired due to ill health. Edmund was a member of the United Methodist Church in Dow City and a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include three sisters, Betty, Mrs. Kenneth Argotsinger of Dunlap, Joan, Mrs. Arlo North of Dow City and Virginia Riddle of Scottsdale, Ariz. Also by a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held April 22, at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Dow City. Burial was in the Dow City Cemetery. The Rev. Jim Campbell officiated at the services assisted by Bryce Argotsinger. Pallbearers included David North, Kenneth North, James Argotsinger, Bruce Argotsinger, Dennis Argotsinger and Jay Lowrey. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Eleanor J. Bosse (abt. 1909 - 1972)

Funeral services were held Saturday, January 29, 1972, for Mrs. Eleanor J. Bosse, age 63, of Anaheim, California, who passed away Thursday, January 27, in Stanton Community Hospital after a short illness.

Recitation of the Rosary was Friday evening in the Daly and Bartel Mortuary Chapel in Anaheim. Requiem Mass was said Saturday morning in St. Pius V Catholic Church in Buena Park with interment following at Good Shepherd Cemetery in Huntington Beach.

She was a 15 year resident of Anaheim and a former resident of Schleswig. She was a 25 year member of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Crawford County Post 3930, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Schleswig, Iowa.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. John (Agnes) Porter, Anaheim, California; Mrs. James (Irene) Krueger, Schleswig; Mrs. Melvin (Barbara) Schmidt, Kingsley, Iowa; one son Albert E., Westminister, California; her father, Nick Johannes, Buena Park, California; two brothers, Phillip Johannes, Washington, and Francis Johannes, Buena Park, California; two sisters, Mary Zimmerman, North Dakota; and Lucille Albrecht, Montana and 13 grandchildren.

Elizabeth Sophie (Segebart) Comstock (1903 - 1980)

Elizabeth Sophie Comstock was born May 23, 1903 in East Boyer Township the daughter of John and Christina Hinrichsen Segebart. Her father died when she was four and after her mother's remarriage the family moved to a farm northwest of Denison.

Elizabeth was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Zion Lutheran Church. She attended Zion Lutheran School, graduating from the eighth grade. She worked on the farm and in various homes in Crawford County until her marriage to Geary Comstock on Feb. 23, 1928 in Omaha, Neb. To this union were born five children.

They made their home on several farms in Crawford County until retiring to Denison in 1947. After her husband's death in September of 1971, Elizabeth made her home in Denison until suffering a stroke while visiting in Denver in February, 1972. Since that time she lived with her children spending most of her time in the Denver area. Two years ago she entered the Arvada Health Center due to ill health. It was here she died July 27, 1980 at the age of 77 years, two months and four days after suffering several strokes during the last month of her life.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two granddaughters, Linda and Cassandra Deepe and two brothers, one in infancy and Louie Segebart.

Survivors include, two sons, Merritt of Odebolt and G. LeRoy of Denison and three daughters, Ruby, Mrs. Henry Herrmann of Arvada, Colo., Marilyn Jean, Mrs. John Deepe of Thornton, Colo., and Lucille, Mrs. Duane Vetter of Manilla. Also by 14 grandchildren, two brothers John Segebart of Ida Grove and Charles Segebart of Fresno, Calif.

Funeral services were held July 31 at 1:30 p.m. at the Huebner Funeral Home, Denison. Burial was in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery. The Rev. Dan Hauschild officiated at the services. Mrs. John Lutze was organist with Henry Hanningsen soloist. Pallbearers included David, James, Daniel and Steven Comstock, Myron Herrmann and Brian Vetter; honorary pallbearers were Michael Comstock, Douglas Comstock, Alan and Russell Vetter and Lodean Schmidt. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Ella Ann Augusta (Ackelbein) Clausen (1904 - 1981)

Ella Ann Augusta Clausen was born on April 22, 1904 at Hanover Township, Crawford County, the daughter of William and Caroline Ullrich Ackelbein. She died Dec. 26, 1981 at Eventide Lutheran Home, Denison at the age of 77.

Ella was baptized as an infant and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She spent her early years on a family farm in Hanover Township. Ella received her formal education at St. Paul's Lutheran School in Hanover Township.

On Jan. 7, 1923, Ella was united in marriage to Fred Clausen at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Together they farmed in the Charter Oak community until they retired from the farm and moved into Charter Oak. Fred died in 1959. Ella continued to make Charter Oak her home until 1965 when she moved to Denison. For the past few years she has been a resident of Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison due to failing health.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Ella was preceded in death by one great grandson, two brothers and four sisters.

Survivors include, three daughters, Luella, Mrs. Robert Braase of Schleswig, Norma Jean, Mrs. Loren Albertson of Des Moines and Phyllis, Mrs. Charles Ernest of Morgan City, Louisi. Also surviving are thirteen grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Dec. 29 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. Burial was in St. Paul's Cemetery near Charter Oak. The Rev. L. C. Gebhardt officiated at the services. Pallbearers were Alvern Klinker, Gordon Owens, Edgar Koch, Jr., Norman Klinker, Donald Koch, and Harvey Westphalen. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Charter Oak.

Ella M. (Hildebrandt) Eggert (1903 - 1987)

Ella M. Eggert was born on a farm in Paradise Township, Crawford County, Ia., Aug. 14, 1903, the daughter of John and Anne Vogt Hildebrandt. She was baptized at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Ia., Sept. 24, 1904, and confirmed at the same church in 1932. Ella was raised on the family farm and received her formal education in the local rural schools.

On Jan. 25, 1922, Ella was united in marriage with Fred J. Eggert at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. To this union one son, Harry, was born. They made their home on a farm in Hanover Township for a time before moving to Denison. They later moved to Mesa, Ariz., where they resided for seventeen years before returning to Denison.

Fred died Oct. 29, 1972, and Ella continued to make Denison her home. Since April 4, 1985, she had resided at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison. Ella died late Wednesday, Jan. 21, 1987, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison. At the time of her death she had attained the age of 83 years, 5 months, and 7 days. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and the Ladies Aid of the church.

Including her parents and her husband, Ella was preceded in death by one brother, John Hildebrandt, and one step brother, John Klink.

She is survived by one son and his wife, harry and Jean Eggert of Page, Ariz., one grandson, Damon Eggert of Page, Ariz., one brother, Emil Hildebrandt of Denison, one sister, Elise Boyens of Denison, one step brother, William Klink of Mesa, Ariz., two step sisters, Clara, Mrs. Walter Henningsen of Denison, and Elizabeth Jepsen of Charter Oak, and one sister-in-law, Florence Hildebrandt of Charter Oak. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Jan. 26, 1987, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Ia., with the Reverend Kurt R. Kaiser officiating. Music for the service was provided by the congregation singing "Abide With Me" and "What A Friend We Have In Jesus." Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist.

John William Ebsen (1898 - 1985)

John William Ebsen was born on April 18, 1898, in Aspinwall, Iowa, the son of John V. and Frieda Theodorf Ebsen. He died Saturday morning, August 31, 1985, at the Denison Care Center in Denison, Iowa, at the age of 87. John spent his formative years in Crawford County, Iowa. He received his formal education in the Crawford County schools.

He was united in marriage to Esther J. Sciford on December 10, 1919, in Charter Oak. Together they made their first home on a farm in the Charter Oak area. In 1943, they moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where John was employed in the Allis-Chalmers tractor factory. Following retirement in 1963, they returned to Iowa making their home in Schleswig. John entered the Denison Care Center on August 14 of this year due to failing health.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by two brothers, Fred and Henry, two sisters, Caroline and Laura, and one granddaughter.

Survivors include his wife Esther of the Denison Care Center, two daughters, Leila, Mrs. Marvin Zage of Schleswig, and Wilma, Mrs. Donald Peterson of Mendham, New Jersey; and one son, John C. and wife Eva Marie of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Also surviving are six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, one sister, Sophie, Mrs. Sidney Nelson of Lake View, Iowa, and one step-sister, Mrs. Margaret Dusey of Sioux City, Iowa, as well as a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, September 3, 1985, at 10:00 a.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. Interment was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. The Rev. Richard Nelson and Vicar Dr. John R. Stephenson officiated at the services and graveside rites. The Immanuel Lutheran Ladies' Chorus with Mrs. Marlene Hight as organist provided music for the services. Hymns for the services included "Nearer My God to Thee" and "I'm But a Stranger Here". Serving as pallbearers for the services were Ralph Reincke, John Meggers, Emerson Crampton, Robert Skarin, Ralph Boerner and Emil Petersen.

Judith Ann Slechta (1947 - 1964)

Judith (Judy) Ann Slechta, daughter of Leslie and Mildred Slechta, was born July 24, 1947 at Denison. She died June 15, 1964 in the Clarkson hospital in Omaha, as the result of an auto accident.

She was a member of the United Presbyterian church at Vail, having been baptized in April, 1948 and confirmed in 1960. She was a member of both the junior and senior choirs, the Youth Fellowship, and she helped with Bible School. Judy completed the junior year at the Ar-We-Va Community School, having participated in the Glee club, play production and marching band.

She was active in the 4-H Happy Helpers. She held some offices, and received a home grounds improvement award, a gardening award, a home economics award, and a food and nutrition award. She was also a member of the Vail Volunteers for two years, and later was a charter member of the Happy Hustlers.

Judy is survived by her parents, two brothers, James and Scott, and a host of relatives and friends.

Rev. Frank Mease officiated at the funeral services held June 17, at 1:30 p. m. at the Maxwell Funeral home in Denison. Interment was in the Vail cemetery. Pallbearers were schoolmates: Paul Alyward, Dennis Dozark, Michael Massman, Carl Mease, Kim Von Glan and Merlin Whiteing.

Julia Catherine (Christiansen) Schinkel (1897 - 1964)

Mrs. Herman Schinkel died at the Crawford County Memorial hospital on Sunday night, Oct. 25 (1964). She had been a patient at the hospital since early in September.

Julia Catherine Christiansen, daughter of Christian and Johanna Christiansen, was born Aug. 6, 1897 in Denison. Later she lived with her parents in Nebraska.

She was married to Herman Schinkel on April 4, 1918 at Creighton, Neb. Here they resided on a farm until 1930 when they came to farm in Crawford county. They came to their present home in 1935.

Mrs. Schinkel was baptized in infancy and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Crofton, Neb. Her funeral service was held at the Zion Lutheran church in Denison on Oct. 28 with the Rev. Carl W. Schmidt officiating. Interment was made in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens with the following serving as pallbearers: Alvin Dixon, Melvin Ebeling, Fred Holst, Kenneth Kohler, Phillip Schinkel and Dennis D. Weiss.

Julie M. (Kroeger) Grill (1882 - 1968)

Funeral services for Julie M. Grill were held at the United Church of Christ at Schleswig on Monday, December 16, 1968 with Rev. R. J. Ratzlaff officiating. Music for the service was provided by Mrs. Donald Meyer and Mrs. Harlan Buffum with Mrs. John Evers as accompanist. The hymns sung were "Beyond the Sunset" and "Abide with Me".

Julie M. Grill (nee Kroeger) was born on December 30, 1882 in Crawford County, daughter of Peter and Nancy Boysen Kroeger. She was a member of the United Church of Christ, of the Women's Guild and Dorcas Society.

On June 21, 1906 she was married to Louie Grill at Denison, Iowa. Two sons were born to this union, Werthus and Octavus both of Schleswig. The couple spent their entire life in the Schleswig area. Mr. Grill passing away in 1947. Mrs. Grill had lived at Eventide in Denison the past three years, and at Claudia's Rest Home. She passed away at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison on December 12, after a lingering illness, at the age of 85.

Survivors are her sons, Werthus and Octavus Grill, four grandchildren and six great grandchildren. One sister, Alvina Lohse, two brothers, William Kroeger of Ricketts and Hugo J. Kroeger of Long Beach, California. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louie, and one grandson, Harris Grill. Pallbearers were Ivan Ewoldt, Everett Evers, Herman Mundt, Clarence Wiese, Donald Kroeger and Earl Schwingdorf. Interment was made at the Morgan cemetery.

Julius Bielenberg (1876 - 1968)

Funeral services were held in the Sinn Funeral Home for Julius Bielenberg on Saturday, January 27, 1968 with Rev. F. A. Wiese officiating. Organist was Mrs. Broder Petersen, soloist was Mrs. Don Meyer who sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Beyond The Sunset."

Julius Bielenberg, son of Claus Bielenberg and Margaretha nee Stubbe was born September 30, 1876 in Otto Creek Township, Crawford County.

He was married to Dorothea Jahde on March 12, 1902. The couple farmed northeast of Schleswig. His wife died June 30, 1938. After the marriage of his son Clarence, he stayed with them for 12 years on the homeplace. In July, 1962 he retired to Schleswig. Failing health made it necessary for him to give up his home. He lived in the Valley View Nursing Home at Correctionville since September, 1965. He died there on Thursday, January 25.

He is survived by his children: Leona, wife of Julius Jensen of Alta; LuVerne, wife of Harvey Mohr of Schleswig; Vlasta, wife of Raymond Jensen of Ida Grove; Clifford of Mapleton and Clarence of Schleswig. Eleven grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. He attained 91 years, 3 months, and 25 days.

Pallbearers were James Else, Orlyn Jensen, Norman Klinker, Larry Bielenberg, Dennis Bielenberg and Eugene Bielenberg. Interment was made in Morgan Cemetery.

Julius Friedrichsen (1891 - 1973)

Funeral services for Julius Friedrichsen, 81, were held at 1 p.m., Thursday, May 17, 1973, at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison with Rev. Harry L. Strong officiating.

Julius Friedrichsen, son of Fred and Rose Bielenberg Friedrichsen, was born in Crawford County, Iowa, on September 10, 1891. He attended rural schools in the Schleswig area, where he grew to manhood.

On March 10, 1915, he was united in marriage to Ella Schmidt and to this union, two children were born. The family settled on a farm near Schleswig, Iowa, where Mr. Friedrichsen farmed until 1960, when he retired and moved to Schleswig. Mr. Friedrichsen died May 14, 1973, at Colonial Manors in Odebolt, where he had been a resident for the past 11 months.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Ella, in 1966; and a sister Milinda and three great-grandchildren.

He leaves to mourn his passing, his son LeRoy; his daughter, Lucille, Mrs. Robert Vittitoe, both of Schleswig; his brothers, Emil of Odebolt, Iowa, Ben of Denison, Iowa, Knut of Cherokee, Iowa, and Ted of Arion, Iowa; his sisters, Freda, Mrs. John Aldag of Ida Grove, Iowa, and Wanda, Mrs. Arthur Spahn of Storm Lake, Iowa; three grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Interment was in Morgan Township Cemetery, Schleswig, with the following serving as pallbearers: Clarence Friedrichsen, Lodean Voss, Willard Friedrichsen, Marvin Streck, Lyle Phillips and Steve Vittitoe.

Julius Henry Adolph Christiansen (1882 - 1979)

Julius Henry Adolph Christiansen was born on August 27, 1882 at Hanover Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the son of Anthony and Wilhelmina Prien Christiansen. He died on Tuesday January 9, 1979, at Maple Heights Nursing Home, Mapleton, Iowa at the age of 96.

Julius moved with his family at an early age from Hanover to Soldier Township where he received his formal education at the Immanuel Lutheran School. He was baptized and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith.

On October 18, 1905, Julius was united in marriage to Hulda Baak. They made their home on a farm near Immanuel Lutheran Church until 1919 when they moved to Ricketts. In 1931, Julius was elected to the office of supervisor for Crawford County. He held the office for 15 years. He also served on the Ricketts City Council for a number of years.

Julius was an active member of his church serving as an elder for 24 years and sang in the choir for 40 years. He served as a director of the Farmers Savings Bank for 44 years and at one time as president.

Julius was preceded in death by his wife Hulda in 1969, his parents, one grandson, one sister, Mary, and four brothers, Carl, Albert, John and Otto.

Survivors include, one son W.E. Christiansen of Carroll, one grandson Richard Christiansen of Chicago, one sister, Mrs. Lena Meyer of Wall Lake, Iowa, and three brothers, Ben of Mapleton and Louis and Henry both of Denison.

Funeral services were held on Friday, January 12, 1979, at 11:00 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Soldier Township. Burial was in the church cemetery. The Rev. E.E. Greene officiated at the services. Serving as pallbearers were Herbert Teut, Victor Schwarz, Kenneth Baak, Bonard Christiansen, Robert Christiansen and Wayne Kuhlmann.

Julius Rathje (1874 - 1967)

Funeral services for Julius Rathje were held Saturday April 1, at the United Church of Christ with Rev. R. J. Ratzlaff officiating. Mrs Broder Petersen, organist accompanied Mrs Ernie Grell and Mrs Don Meyer who sang "Rock of Ages" and "Nearer My God to Thee."

Julius, son of Jochin Rathje and Emalie nee Ehler was born July 22, 1874 at Altenheil Febmarn, Germany. He came to America on April 9, 1890 at the age of 15, accompanied with his brother and parents. They purchased a farm in Morgan Township in July 1890 and settled there.

He was married to Johanna Grill on March 2, 1900 at Hanover Township Church with Rev. C. Runge officiating. They farmed until March of 1919 when they moved into Schleswig. In 1962 Mr Rathje moved with his daughter east of town.

Julius Rathje died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital on March 30, 1967, due to a brief illness. He is survived by one daughter Hertha Schmidt, two grandchildren, Burdell and Raynard Schmidt and eight great grandchildren. He was a member of the United Church of Christ.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Johanna on November 6, 1962, his parents, one sister Agnes, six brothers, Henry, Emil, Louie, Hans, Herman and Carl. He attained the age of 92 years, eight months and eight days.

Pallbearers were, H. C. Dahms, E. W. Claussen, Wm. J. Petersen, Everett Evers, Byron Behrmann and Herbert Rickert. Interment was made in the Morgan Cemetery.

Julius A. Rohwer (1894 - 1971)

Funeral services for Julius A. Rohwer, who died Saturday morning September 18 at the Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, were held Monday, September 20, 1971 at Sacred Heart Church, Ida Grove, Iowa.

Mr. Rohwer, the son of Theodore Rohwer and Katherine Brechwald Rohwer, was born in Ida Grove, Iowa on July 2, 1894. In 1912 at the age of 18, after completion of his education, he began his banking career in association with his father. He entered military service in 1917 and in 1919 he was married to Marie Rath from Denison, Iowa.

At the time of the death of Theodore Rohwer in 1935, Mr. Rohwer became President of the Farmers State Bank. He served in this capacity until his retirement in 1963. During his banking career, Mr. Rohwer was influential in the development of pasture and soil conservation projects. He was actively interested in farming and a pioneer in the program of the financing of feeder cattle for this area. In 1949, in conjunction with the Golden Jubilee of Schleswig, Mr. Rohwer started the 5 calf feeding project for children. With his guidance it continued to grow and is now in its 24th year. Mr. Rohwer was guest writer for several farm publications and a guest lecturer for the Agricultural School of Banking at Iowa State University at Ames. He was active in many area civic organizations.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, a brother John and sister Alice. He is survived by his wife, 2 daughters, Patricia (Mrs. H. David Hurlbut) of Mendham, New Jersey; Dorothy (Mrs. Peter Broadhurst) of Hartford, Connecticut, and nine grandchildren. Also surviving are his sisters, Mrs. T. R. Hordeman and Mrs. Helen Schlimgen and 2 brothers, Dr. R. T. Rohwer and Emmet Rohwer.

Pallbearers were: E. W. Claussen, Paul Claussen, Larry Clausen, A.J. Sinn, Bart Bielenberg, Robert Reimer, George Else, Chris Gierstorf and John D. Moeller. Interment services were held at Morgan Cemetery.

Jurgen Heinrich Petersen (1902 - 2000)

Jurgen Heinrich Petersen was born November 23, 1902, the son of Peter W. and Hulda Brockman Petersen. He died at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa, Wednesday, May 17, 2000 at the age of ninety-seven.

Jurgen was born in Hanover Township, Crawford County and was baptized in Christ on January 25, 1903 in Hanover Township by Pastor Runge. He was confirmed in the Lutheran faith on March 24, 1918 by Pastor Firnhaber in Schleswig, Iowa. After receiving his education, he joined his parents and brothers starting the Peter W. Petersen and Sons' farming operation, known as the Sunny Slope Stock Farm. He enjoyed farming until his retirement in March 1968, when he moved with his Mother and brother Henry to Schleswig.

Jurgen was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig, Iowa. He was a loving brother and uncle. He enjoyed playing cards, fishing, and spending time with his family. Jurgen entered the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison on November 13, 1986, where he enjoyed playing bingo, bowling, and looking out of his window at the squirrels, and watching the trains.

Jurgen was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, C. Henry, March 25, 1997 and Bernhard, February 28, 1956; one sister, Elsie Carstensen, March 23, 2000; one brother-in-law, Friedrich Carstensen, December 20, 1998; one niece, Elaine Schroeder, March 5, 1942; and one great-niece, Sandra Ramer, April 16, 1991.

Survivors include one brother, Emil Petersen and his wife, Lillie of Schleswig; one sister-in-law, Leila Zage of Schleswig; nieces; nephews; great nieces; great nephews; four great-great-nieces; three great-great-nephews; many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 20, 2000 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Merle Mahnken officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "How Great Thou Art", "I'm But a Stranger Here" and "I Know That My Redeemer Lives". Those serving as pallbearers were: Daniel Schroeder, Wayne Schroeder, Patrick Hanrahan, Jens Carstensen, Darryl Petersen, Dean Schroeder, Chad Petersen, Ralph Neumann, Don Hanrahan, Jay Petersen, Alan Nemitz, Tim Stoppel, Dave Nemitz and Bruce Kelly.

Lena Carolina (Weinbrandt) Jessen (1879 - 1970)

Funeral services for Mrs. Lena Jessen were held Saturday, May 16, 1970 at the Heubner Funeral Home, Denison, Iowa with Rev. Emil R. Zmijewsk officiating. Henry Henningsen sang "What a Fried We have In Jesus" and "Asleep in Jesus", accompanied by Mrs. Fred Rabe on the organ.

Lena Carolina Jessen, daughter of Christian and Anna Weinbrandt was born in Schleswig-Holstein Germany, May 12, 1879 and died May 14, 1970, at Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, at the age of 91 and two days.

At the age of five years her mother passed away in Germany and she came to this country with her father. They lived at Westside, Iowa, before moving on a farm near Deloit.

On June 3, 1900 she was united in marriage to John Jessen of Deloit. To this union one daughter and three sons were born, after the death of her husband in 1917, Mrs. Jessen has made her home with her two sons Henry and Herman.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one daughter, Anna, Mrs. Gunard Johnson and one son, John Jr., four brothers Albert, Walter, William and Max, three sisters Mrs. Anna Plotz, Mrs. Julie Plotz and Mrs. Minnie Schram.

She is survived by her two sons, Henry and Herman of Denison, six grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, one great great grandchild, two brothers, August Weinbrandt of Denison, Fred Weinbrandt fof Elgin, Calif., one sister, Hilda, Mrs. Herbert Baker of Denison several other relatives and many friends.

Pallbearers were Henry F. Boysen, Kenneth Hutcheson, Fred Podey, Ira Crane, Russell Johnson and William B. Riley. Interment was in the Lutheran Cemetery, Denison, Iowa.

Leonard C. Christensen (1913 - 1980)

Leonard C. Christensen, 67, son of James and Mary Christensen was born July 17, 1913 and died Oct. 9, 1980 at the West Anahiem Community Hospital, Anahiem, Calif., after a long illness.

He had been a employee for 28 years of the city of Long Beach gas department. He was raised and received his education in the Denison area.

He is survived by his wife Gertrude, sons Warren and Dale, brothers, Oscar, Harry, Arthur and Lyle, sisters, Mrs. Violet Keating, Myrtle Roth and Evelyn Hulsebus, seven grandchildren, one great grandchild and a nephew, Rev. Jim Christensen.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Dave. Services were held Oct. 11, 1980 at Peek Family Colonial Funeral Home. Interment was at the Green Hills Cemetery at San Pedro, Calif.

Mrs. Myrtle Roth of Denison and Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Schroeder, Westside attended funeral services.

Leonard Herman Schiernbeck (1918 - 1974)

Funeral services for Leonard Schiernbeck were held Friday, September 20, 1974 at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig with Rev. Lyle Greiner officiating. Mrs. John Evers was the organist and Mrs. Harlan Buffum and Mrs. Don Meyer sang "Beyond the Sunset" and "What a Friend We Have In Jesus".

Leonard Herman Schiernbeck, son of Herman Schiernbeck and Susie, nee Hansohn, Schiernbeck, was born February 16, 1918, at the home place near Kiron, Iowa. He was a life-long resident of this community.

On August 30, 1941, he was united in marriage to Milda Wiedemann at Oyster Point, Virginia. He was a World War II veteran.

Mr. Schiernbeck died at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, Tuesday, September 17, at the age of 56 years, 7 months and 1 day.

He was preceded in death by one sister and one brother. Survivors include: his wife Milda; parents Herman and Susie Schiernbeck; one son, Dale of Ida Grove and daughter-in-law Diane, one grandchild and one brother Leslie of Omaha.

Pallbearers were: Melvin Baker, Irwin Kastner, Irvin Schultz, Lyle Phillips, Alfred Sievers and Virtus Hollander. Interment was in Morgan Cemetery with Military Honors by the Schleswig American Legion and VFW Posts.

Leonard Fred Schultz (1906 - 1973)

Funeral services for Leonard F. Schultz were held Friday, October 26, 1973 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Pastor F. A. Wiese officiated. Mrs. Ray Schmidt was the organist. The choir sang "There is an Hour of Peaceful Rest" and the congregation sang "A Mighty Fortress is our God".

Leonard Fred, son of Herman Schultz and Bertha Huebner was born southwest of Schleswig on June 20, 1906. He was baptized by Pastor Runge on July 29, 1906. He grew up in this community.

He was married to Dorothy Knop by Rev. Von Gemmingen of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Soldier Township. The couple farmed on the home place until 1954, when they built their own home and moved to Schleswig. The couple took up membership in the Immanuel Lutheran Church, in Schleswig in 1956.

Leonard had been ill the last two months, undergoing surgery at Sioux City, returning home, and shortly after that entering the Crawford County Memorial Hospital where he died on Wednesday, October 24.

He is survived by his widow, Dorothy, four children, Lorenz of Denison, Milford of Schleswig, Jolene, wife of Harlow Sievers of Fort Dodge, and Roger of Sioux City, eight grandchildren, two brothers, Alfred of Charter Oak and Otto of Schleswig; two sisters, Clara Kuhlmann of Charter Oak and Irma Wisneski of Sauk Rapids, Minnesota.

He was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters. He attained to 67 years, 4 months and 4 days.

Pallbearers were Edgar Else, Wilbert Johannsen, Cyrenus Petersen, Walter Ernst, Herbert Miller and Harry Wellendorf. Interment was in Morgan Township Cemetery.

Leona (Schmidt) Stoltenberg (1891 - 1966)

Leona, daughter of Carl E. Schmidt and Wilhelmina nee Rahn was born January 31, 1891 in Crawford county.

She was married to Albert J. Stoltenberg on December 22, 1915, at Schleswig. The couple lived on a farm in Otter Creek Township and in 1941 they moved to Schleswig.

Leona Stoltenberg died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison on November 4 (1966), due to injuries suffered in an car accident. She is survived by her husband, Albert, one daughter, Mrs. Irwin (Marvella) Voss, one grandson and by one brother, John F. Schmidt.

She was a member of the United Church of Christ and was a life time resident of this community.

She is preceded in death by two sisters and one brother. She attained the age of 75 years and 10 months.

Pallbearers were, Earl Baker, Glenn Evans, Harvey Mohr, Melvin Schultz, Edlef Jurgensen and Clarence Friedrichsen. Interment was made in the Morgan Cemetery, Schleswig, Iowa.

Leo V. Finneran (1914 - 1977)

Leo V. Finneran, 62, 1233 7th Street, died Jan 30, 1977, at the Boone County Hospital. He was born Feb. 26, 1914, in Denison, the son of James E. Finneran and Sarah Bauman. He married Loretta A. Miller Nov. 19, 1955, in Boone.

Mr. Finneran was a retired paint contractor, a member of the Sacred Heart Church, American Legion Post 56, V.F.W. Post 817, Loyal Order of the Moose 104, Knight of Columbus 814 and a veteran of World War II.

He was preceded in death by his father and a brother. Survivors include his mother, Mrs. James Finneran, Denison; his wife, Loretta; seven brothers, Emmett, Odebolt; Gerald, Dnison; Benedict, Odebolt; Clarence, Anaheim , Calif., Joe, Vail; William, Deloit; Francis, Owattana, Minn., five sisters, Mrs. Agness Dalton and Genevieve Finneran, Denison; Mrs. Paul Gaffey, LeMars; Mrs. Paul Schroeder, Geneva, Minn., and sister Noreen, Templeton.

Services were held Wednesday, Feb. 2 at 10 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Church with Father Allan Reicks officiating. A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. at the St. Rose of Lima Church in Denison. Rosary was recited Tuesday at 8 p.m. at the Schroeder Funeral Home preceded by the Knights of Columbus rosary at 6:45 p.m. In charge of arrangements was Schroeder Funeral Home.

Leslie Elroy Johnston (1891 - 1963)

Leslie Elroy Johnston, son of Allen and Annie Crawford Johnston, was born Sept. 29, 1891 on a farm near Denison where he grew to manhood.

He was united in marriage to Selma Hansen on Feb. 14, 1912. This union was blessed with three children, Garnette, Mrs. Francis Fineran of Owatonna, Minn; Marjorie, Mrs. Roy Dethman and Marlin of Denison.

He spent most of his married life farming but moved to town in 1956 and purchased the La Fonda Motor Court which he operated until his death on Sept. 28 (1963). The couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on Feb. 14, 1962.

He leaves to mourn his death his wife and three children, seven grandchildren, two great grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Leona Rollins of Denison, several nieces and nephews and many friends.

Lester Lee Judy (1904 - 1965)

Lester Lee, son of John Judy and his wife Anna Nee Krueger, was born in Stockholm Township, Crawford County, Ia., on Jan 10, 1904, where he also grew to manhood. As a young man he enlisted in the United States Army and served with this branch of the service for over twenty years.

April 2, 1949 he was married to Alice Prosser and she preceded him in death on Aug 23, 1952. In 1953 he came to make is home with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Judy, in Denison. In poor health for several years he was hospitalized at various times in the Veteran's hospital in Omaha where he died Feb. 4 (1965).

Surviving are his mother, Mrs. John Judy of Denison; one sister, Mrs. Ernest Keesling of Denison; one brother, Eston of Sioux City ???? wife preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held at the Huebner Funeral home on Feb. 8 with the Rev. Carl W. Schmidt officiating. Interment was made in the Oakland cemetery. Pallbearers were Allan Anderson, Jess Shivers, Hugo Saggau, Louie Strissel, Hans Dersein, and Vernes Dethmann.

Lillie (Segebart) Dixon (1901 - 1974)

Mrs. James Dixon, nee Lillie Segebart, was born on October 25, 1901 in Crawford County, Iowa, to Mr. and Mrs. William (nee, Myrtle Wilson) Segebart. She was received into God's Kingdom of Grace through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism on April 6, 1902. She was confirmed on September 22, 1966 in Zion Lutheran Church, Arcadia.

She was united in marriage to James Dixon on December 12, 1919. Lillie has been in failing health for the past five years, having been mostly bedfast during that time.

Her departure is mourned by her husband; James, of Denison; two sons: Melvin of Westside, and Kenneth of Wall Lake; two daughters, Mrs. Clarence (Virginia) Boger of Denison, and Mrs. Merlin (Beverly) Brockman of Westside; (a son died in infancy.) two brothers: George Segebart of Deloit, Mr. Earl Segebart of Vail; three sisters: Mrs. Arthur (Lulu) Pahl of Westside, Mrs. Lafe (Alice) Schoenjahn of Carroll; Mrs. Frenz (Erma) Lohrmann of Manning. She is also survived by four grandsons and 10 grand-daughters. One grandson and two grand-daughters died in infancy.

Lillie was called to her eternal home in Heaven on Saturday, September 21, 1974 at the Crawford County Hospital, at the age of 72 years, 10 months and 27 days. May our gracious and loving Lord strengthen and comfort the hearts of those who mourn.

Funeral services were held September 23 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Arcadia, with Pastor L.W. Sawhill officiating. Pallbearers were William Lawler, Gary Voege, Joseph White, Thomas Malloy, Irvin Heires and Manual Aschinger. Burial was at the Westside Cemetery with Huebner Funeral Home of Denison in charge of arrangements.

Aletha K. (Schramm) Schwarz (1919 - 1980)

Aletha K. Schwarz was born on February 2, 1919, at Grand Meadow, Minnesota, the daughter of August and Karoline Hussong Schramm. She died on Sunday evening, June 22, 1980, at University Hospitals, Iowa City, Iowa at the age of 61.

Aletha was raised on a farm in Grant Township. She received her early education in the Trinity Lutheran School at Grant Township. She completed her education in the Ida Grove schools.

On November 7, 1937, Aletha was united in marriage to Paul Schwarz at Trinity Lutheran Church, They made their home on a farm near Ricketts until 1968 when they moved to Ricketts. For the past fifteen years, Aletha has been an employee at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital.

Aletha was baptized as an infant on February 16, 1919, and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith on Palm Sunday 1933. She was a charter member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Ricketts. She was a member of St. Luke's Ladies Aid, taught Sunday School for over 20 years and was a past president of L.W.M.L.

In addition to her parents, Aletha was preceded in death by one brother in infancy.

Survivors include, her husband Paul of Ricketts, two sons, Kenneth of Marshalltown, Iowa and Wendell of Saginaw, Michigan, and one daughter, Colleen of Iowa City. Also by six grandchildren, three brothers, Ray Schramm of Ida Grove, Henry Schramm of Austin, Minnesota and Dr. Dwayne Schramm of Fresno, California and one sister, Henrietta, Mrs. Rudie Koch of Schleswig.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, June 25, 1980, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Ricketts, Iowa. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. The Vicar Richard Jordan officiated at the services. Serving as pallbearers were Roger Schramm, Gary Koch, Delwin Koch, Randy Cram, Robert Christiansen and Lawrence Gosch.

Alvin A. Stier (1919 - 1992)

Alvin A. Stier was born on March 16, 1919, the son of Adolph and Maria Johannsen Stier. he died on Monday, April 13, 1992 at the Clarkson Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 73 years.

Alvin was born in Soldier Township and received his education in rural schools near his home. He was baptized a Christian on April 20, 1919 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Soldier Township and confirmed in the Lutheran faith on April 9, 1933 also at St. John's.

While young, he was employed by area farmers until he was united in marriage to Fern Backhaus on March 16, 1941 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. They were blessed with the birth of two daughters. The couple farmed four miles west of Schleswig and subsequently moved to a farm near Charter Oak before purchasing a farm north east of Schleswig in 1958. They remained on the farm until 1988 when they retired and moved to Schleswig.

Alvin was a self-educated organist who enjoyed entertaining his family with his musical talent. In addition, he was an avid stock car racing fan who frequently attended professional races in Kansas City, Knoxville, the Daytona 500 which he attended each year for eight years among other races including those held in the region.

He was a kind and loving husband and father who devoted his life to the family he loved, and was privileged to have celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary on March 17, 1991. The devotion he had for his Savior is best illustrated by his service to the Lord through the Immanual Lutheran Church as a member, past secretary and trustee. Additionally, Alvin was active in the community as a member of the Crawford County Pork Producers.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Harvey and Herbert, and one sister, Mildred Marquardt.

Survivors include his wife, Fern of Schleswig; two daughters, Nancy Simpson and her husband, Riley of Marion, Iowa and Marsha Lindstrom and her husband, Jim of Kiron. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 16, 1992 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa with Pastor Richard E. Nelson and Pastor Donald R. Wagner officiating the service and grave side rites held at Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig, Iowa. Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for Henry and Marge Henningsen singing "Amazing Grace" and "I'm But A Stranger Here" and congregational singing "Just As I Am, Without One Plea". Pallbearers were: Riley Simpson, Zach Simpson, Anne Simpson, Jim Lindstrom, Angela Lindstrom and Allison Lindstrom. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Walter A. Huebner and Sons' Funeral Home in Schleswig.

Alvin Louis Miller (1915 - 1997)

Alvin, son of Herman and Minnie Steckelberg Miller, was born on August 16, 1915, on the family farm west of Manilla High School in 1934. After graduation Alvin started farming.

On December 26, 1941, Alvin was united in marriage with Helen Virginia Kyle at Maryville, Missouri. Three children were born to this union. They lived on the family farm until 1975 when they moved into Manilla.

Alvin was a member of the United Church of Manilla. He was also a member of the Golden Leaf Masonic Lodge and West Central Iowa Animal Unit of the Abu Bekr Shrine. Alvin was a 4-H leader for many years and at one time served as mayor of Manilla. He enjoyed wood working and spent many hours on the golf course.

After several years of failing health, Alvin's wife, Helen, died on February 1, 1993. He continued to live in Manilla until he died suddenly and unexpectedly on Wednesday, April 30, 1997 at the age of 81 years, 8 months, and 14 days.

Besides his wife and parents, Alvin was preceded in death by a brother, Arno Miller, and a sister, Selma Vennink.

Alvin is survived by three children: Kathleen and her husband, Larry Jorgensen, of Manilla; Carolyn and her husband, Jay Law, of Whitehouse, Texas; and Richard Miller, and his wife, Patty, of Kansas City, Missouri; nine grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; a sister, Lucille Carstens, of Manilla; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

The loving gifts you have given me as a father have shaped my life and made me the person I am. Your strong sense of right and wrong are all part of me. My outlook on life, my sense of humor, my interests and talents...I can see you in all of them. It makes me happy and proud to know that the qualities in you I love and admire so much are a part of me. You are always with me, Dad, in my thoughts in my heart, in the very fabric of my life...You are always with me.

A Masonic Memorial service was held at the Golden Leaf Masonic Lodge on Friday, May 2, 1997 at 7:30 p.m. at the Ohde Funeral Home in Manilla. Services were held Saturday, May 3, 1997 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Church of Manilla. Officiating the service was Reverend Kenneth Ritchie. Music was provided by Trudy Saunders serving as organist with the song "How Great Thou Art". Interment was in the Nishnabotna Cemetery, in Manilla, Iowa. Casketbearers were Steve Jorgensen, Joshua Lueth, Sean Miller, Holly Lueth, Cory Jorgensen, Jared Miller, Christopher Miller, Heather Lueth and Kara Jorgensen. The family wishes to express their gratitude for your kindness evidenced in thought word, and deed.

Ferdinand Christian Paulsen (1905 - 1962)

Ferdinand Christian Paulsen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hans Paulsen, was born in Ahrenshoeft, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. In early infancy he was baptized in the name of the Triune God and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He came to America in 1924, living for a time in South Dakota, then coming to Iowa.

Here he was married to Vernetta Schmidt on Sept. 21, 1932, a union to which two children were born. They farmed after their marriage for a year in Goodrich Township, then for four years near Ida Grove and Odebolt, coming to their present farm home in 1938.

Mr. Paulsen had been in poor health for the past two years and died at his home on Tuesday, Jan. 16, (1962) at the age of 56 years, 1 month and 17 days.

He is survived by his widow, by one daughter, Roseann Gillis of Macon, Ga.; and one son, Ronald of Denison; by the following sisters and brothers: Mrs. Clara Goltz of Rodney, Minn., Mrs. Amanda Gibson of St. Paul, Minn., Mrs. Katherine Wolbersen of White Rock, S.D., Andrew Paulsen of Oto, Johannes in Germany and Theresa, Hermine and Theodore, all living in Germany. One sister and his parents preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held at Zion Lutheran Church on Jan. 18, with the Rev. Carl W. Schmidt officiating. Interment was made in Crawford Height Memory Gardens. Pallbearers were Hans Clausen, Milroy Groth, Earl Schmidt, Henry Friedricksen, William J. Groth and J. Henry Schroeder.

Florence Leta Behrend (1911 - 1967)

Funeral services for Florence Leta Behrend were held Jan. 2 at Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor Herbert Kothe officiating. Miss Behrend died Dec. 30, 1967 at the home of her brother, Bernard, in Manilla. Burial was at Oak Hill Cemetery at Irwin.

Pallbearers were Larry Justice, Eldon Olson, Mike Kloewer, Alvin Miller, William Ruhde and M. S. Stecklberg. Ohde Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Florence Leta Behrend, daughter of Adolph and Dora Nieman Behrend, was born Aug. 26, 1911 near Manilla. Following a childhood illness, she suffered ill health all her life.

Her mother died in 1953. She kept house for her father until 1959. She spent her remaining years in the home of her brother, Bernard. Her father died in 1959. She moved to her brother's in 1965. She attained the age of 56 years, 4 months and 4 days.

She was baptized and confirmed at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla and was a member of the Priscilla Guild and also the Nishnavalley Club at Manilla.

Survivors include the following brothers and sisters: Erma, Mrs. Otto Schmeilau; Bernhard; Harry; Viola, Mrs. Duane Andrews of Boone; seven nieces and nephews, three great nieces, one aunt, Mrs. Lizzie Petersen of Denison, two uncles Henry Nieman of Crawfordville, Ore., and John Nieman of Harlan.

Florence Marie (Schwieso) Boger (1901 - 1964)

Florence Marie Schwieso, the daughter of August and Alvena nee Grage Schwieso, was born Dec. 30, 1901 in East Boyer Township, Crawford County. She was baptized in infancy and later affiliated with the Zion Lutheran Church by the rite of confirmation.

She was married to William Boger on Feb. 18, 1920. They farmed in the Denison vicinity until moving to Charter Oak in 1960. She entered the Denison hospital on Jan. 8 and died Feb. 1 (1964).

Surviving are her widower, two daughters, (Mildred) Mrs. John Carstens of Yale, (Audrey) Mrs. Carroll Steffen of Charter Oak, one son, Gerald of Denison, eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Also surviving are five sisters, Mrs. George Smidt of Hartland, Minn.; Mrs. Herman Schultz of Schleswig; Mrs. Ann Steffen of Fresno, Calif.; Mrs. Harry Kral of Vail; Mrs. Emil Weggner of Fresno, Calif.; two brothers, Frank Schwieso of Neola and Albert Schwieso of Manilla.

Funeral services were held at the Zion Lutheran Church on Feb. 4, with Rev. Carl Schmidt officiating. Mrs. Fred Rabe was organist with the Lutheran Ladies Choir singing. Interment was in the Garden of Gethsemane at Crawford Heights Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were Clarence Denker, Henry Henningsen, Elmer Quandt, William S. Keim, Vernie Schmidt and Walter Sonnichsen.

Florence Marie Poleske (1909 - 1983)

Florence Marie, daughter of Ernest and Minnie Lueck Poleske, was born April 25, 1909, in Nishnabotna Township, Crawford County, Iowa. She attended the rural schools near her home. Florence made here home with her parents on the farm, and in 1926 moved with them to Manilla. She was their companion and cared for them until their deaths.

Florence worked in Manilla grocery stores and also did babysitting for many years. She was preparing to go to a babysitting job last summer when she suffered a stroke, and has been in failing health since that time. She has spent time in hospitals in Omaha and Denison and was cared for at the home of her sister, Mrs. Bill Ehlers. She entered the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison a few days ago, where she died on May 11, 1983, at the age of 74 years, and 16 days.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and by her brother, Sears. She is survived by her sister, Mrs. Bill (Nellie) Ehlers of Denison; by two nephews, Glen Ehlers of Denison and Lee Poleske of Alaska; by two nieces, Mrs. Ludwig Hammer of Denison and Mrs. Ruth Rosburg of Altoona; as well as by cousins, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held May 13, 1983, Trinity Lutheran Church, Manilla, at 2:00 p.m. Officiating was Pastor Glenn Wiechmann. Organist was Marian Jones. Vocalists were Carol Ann Segebart and Marlene Jahn. Interment was in the Nishnabotna Cemetery, Manilla. Pallbearers were Gilbert Sievertsen, Bill Lohrmann, Alfred Bargenquast, Floyd Grage, Willie Hansen and Jim Hermeling. The Ohde Funeral Home, Manilla, was in charge of arrangements.

Frances Friedericka (Busskohl) Reisz (1911 - 1976)

Frances Friedericka Reisz, daughter of Fred and Annie Busskohl, was born July 14, 1911, in South Dakota, and died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 1976, at Crawford County Memorial Hospital, at the age of 65 years, 4 months, and 3 days. Mrs. Reisz moved to Deloit with her parents where she lived on a farm.

On April 9, 1958, she was united in marriage to Ralph Reisz in St. Rose of Lima Church in Denison. They settled on a farm near Denison moving to Odebolt in 1964, where they lived for eight years before moving to Denison. Mrs. Reisz was employed at the Denison Hospital before her marriage and later at Eventide.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and one brother Leo. Survivors include her husband, Ralph, two brothers, Fred Busskohl of Watertown, So. Da., and Raymond Busskohl of Odebolt, three sisters, Louise (Mrs. Herman Weber) of Watertown, So. Da., Lilly (Mrs. Pete Mumm) of Florence, So. Da. and Elsie (Mrs. Alfred Stehr) of Deloit, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, in St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church with Father Lloyd White officiating. Pallbearers were DeLos Thayer, Edward Hansohn, Hugo Frehse, Donald Blunk, Arthur Petersen and Robert Wingrove. Interment was made in St. Rose of Lima Cemetery with Huebner Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Frank E. Precht Sr. (1903 - 1975)

Frank E. Precht, Sr., son of Fred and Mathilda Ott Precht, was born on May 8, 1903 in Denison. He and his twin brother Fred were the first babies that Dr. Brannon delivered after moving to Denison. Frank's mother was a seamstress and made the doctor's shirts and trousers for many years after. Frank worked for the Illinois Central Railroad and for Jake Ruback in the grocery business.

Frank married Ella M. Gregerson Aug. 5, 1928 in Defiance. He worked for the Iowa Master Breeders chick hatchery from 1927 to 1959 as manager. He then purchased the hatchery and worked with his wife until 1966 when he retired. He died April 24 (1975).

He is survived by his wife, Ella, and two sons Frederick of Omaha, and Frank Jr. of Park Forest, Ill. and seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held April 26 at 1:30 p.m. at the Maxwell Funeral Home with Rev. James D. Cobb officiating. Pallbearers were Verl Bartlett, Charles Furne, Herbert Klinker, Bernard Miller, Reynold Groth and Bernard Duncan. Interment was in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens.

Frank William Peter Stegemann (1902 - 1967)

Funeral services for Frank Stegemann were held Thursday, February 2, at the United Church of Christ, with Rev. R. J. Ratzlaff officiating. Mrs. John H. Evers organist accompanied Mrs. Ray Martens and Mrs. Ernie Grell, who sang "In The Garden" and "Just As I Am."

Frank William Peter, son of Frank Sr. and Augusta nee Mohr was born April 11, 1902 in Crawford County.

He was married to Edna Volkmann Weise on July 14, 1935, at Denison. The couple lived most of their married life in the Schleswig area except four years in Battle Creek.

Frank Stegemann died at Battle Creek on January 30, 1967 due to a brief illness. He is survived by his wife, Edna, one son Clarence Wiese and one daughter Dorothy Schneller, one son-in-law Ronald Schneller, one daughter-in-law Lois Wiese and four grandchildren. Also survived by two sisters, Geneva Andresen and Berniece Stegemann.

He was a member of the United Church of Christ and was confirmed on June 1, 1919. He is preceded in death by his parents. He attained the age of 64 years, nine months and 15 days.

Pallbearers were Melvin Quandt, Erwin Voss, Dwight Andresen, Palmer Volkman, Walter Bliesmann and Clarence Reincke. Interment was made in the Morgan Cemetery.

Fred Carl Kunze Jr. (1918 - 1972)

Fred Carl Kunze Jr., son of Fred W. and Elsie Neddermeyer Kunze, was born on December 22, 1918 in Crawford County and died at his home on Jan. 21, 1972 at the age of 53 years, and 29 days.

Mr. Kunze was born and raised on a farm, attended rural schools and in 1959 moved to Charter Oak where he was a mechanic for the past ten years.

He is survived by his parents, a sister Phyllis, Mrs. Ed Baak of Charter Oak. He was preceded in death by a brother Lawrence.

Funeral services were held at St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak on Jan. 24 at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Albert Prouty officiating. Interment was made in St. Paul's Cemetery at Charter Oak with the following pallbearers, Ronald Gloede, Roger Gloede, Allen Gloede, Larry Kunze, Rick Kunze and Robie Kunze. Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak was in charge of arrangements.

Carl Fred Rank (1904 - 1981)

Carl Fred Rank was born on May 15, 1904, at Defiance, Iowa, the son of George and Pearl Jenkins Rank. He died October 10, 1981 at a hospital in Cherokee, at the age of 77.

Fred was reared on a farm near Defiance. He received his early education in the rural schools near his home. At the age of 15, Fred moved with his family to a farm near Dunlap.

On May 7, 1931, Fred was united in marriage to Bertha Laubscher at Logan. Together they made their home in the Dunlap community before moving to Denison in 1949 where they farmed. Later they farmed near Charter Oak until Fred retired in 1969. After his retirement, they moved to Denison where they have since continued to make their home.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents, and his three month old son David. Survivors include, his wife, Bertha of Denison, one son Robert of Clarinda, two daughters, Jeanette, Mrs. Clyde McCollough of Vail and Rita, Mrs. Rex Carter of Omaha, Neb. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, two brothers, Searil of Dunlap and Virgil of Denison and one sister, Lorean (Mrs. Ellis) Tracy of Salem, Ill.

Funeral services were held Oct. 12 at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Denison. Burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery near Dunlap. The Rev. Scott Woodworth officiated at the services. Music for the services was provided by Glenn Rankin, organist, and Mrs. Jim Muff soloist. Pallbearers were grandsons David McCollough, Steve McCollough, Bruce McCollough, Todd Harter, Trent Harter and Bill Bump. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Garnett (Hamann) Bahnsen (1908 - 1971)

Funeral services for Garnett Bahnsen were held Friday, September 3, 1971 at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig with Rev. R. J. Ratzlaff officiating. Mrs. John Evers was the organist and Mrs. Harlan Buffum and Mrs. Don Meyer sang "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and "The Lord is My Shepherd".

On February 18, 1908, a daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. John Hamann in Schleswig. They named her Garnett. She was baptized and later confirmed Christian.

On May 14, 1930, Garnett married Martin Bahnsen in Schleswig. They farmed near Schleswig and raised their family. Martin Bahnsen preceded her in death in 1961. In April of this year Mrs. Bahnsen became ill and late in May underwent surgery and treatment for a malignancy. Several weeks ago she returned to the Crawford County Memorial Hospital for treatment and passed away there at 5:15 a.m. September 1, 1971.

Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her father and one grandson. Seven children survive: (Ramona) Mrs. Delbert Gierstorf, (Iona) Mrs. Melvin Nelson, (LaDonna) Mrs. Richard Bumann, (Janice) Mrs. Willie Weltz, (Jolene) Mrs. Kenneth Schwarz, John Bahnsen and Gaylen Bahnsen. She is further survived by her mother Mrs. John Hamann; one sister, Myra Hamann; 23 grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Pallbearers were: Edmund Hamann, Johann Carstensen, Arthur Hallbauer, Leonard Kastner, Francis Krohnke and Ferd Knutson. Interment was in the Morgan Cemetery.

Alvin Carl Moeller (1918 - 1980)

Alvin Carl Moeller was born on November 29, 1918 near Kiron, Iowa, the son of Willie H, and Minnie Kastner Moeller. He died early Wednesday morning, December 24, 1980. at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, Iowa, at the age of 62.

Alvin was raised on a farm near Kiron. He received his early education in the rural schools near his home. He later graduated from the Kiron High School, and then attended the University of Iowa.

Alvin later worked in Greenland on U.S. Government installations. He served in the U.S. Army from 1946 thru 1949. After his release from the military, he returned to Kiron making his home on the farm with his brother. Later he moved into Kiron where he spent the balance of his career in the insurance business.

Alvin was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Carl.

Survivors include, one brother Byron of Loveland, Colorado, three nephews, a niece as well as a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Monday, December 29, 1980, at 2:00 p.m. at the Kiron Baptist Church, Kiron, Iowa . Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery. The Rev. Gary Clark officiated at the services. Pallbearers included Walter R. Huebner, Gordon Larson, Willard Carlson, Howard Purdy, Seldon Buller and Don Ullrich.

Alvin Otto Hargens (1912 - 1980)

Alvin Otto Hargens was born on July 14, 1912 in Soldier Township near Ricketts, Iowa, the son of George and Malinda Schultz Hargens. He died on Thursday morning, April 24, 1980, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, Iowa at the age of 67.

Alvin spent his early years on a family farm. He received his formal education in St. Paul's Lutheran School at Hanover Township. He was baptized as an infant and later confirmed in the Lutheran
faith.

On June 20, 1948, Alvin was united in marriage to Emma Krueger at Worthington, Minnesota. They made their home on a farm west of Ricketts until 1963 when they moved to Ute. Alvin worked as a carpenter and plumber while in Ute. In 1971 he retired and moved to Ricketts.

Alvin was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Hanover Township where he served as an Elder and Trustee. He was active in the Lutheran Laymen's League and the church choir. He was also a member of the Denison Barbershop Chorus.

In addition to his parents, Alvin was preceded in death by one sister, Dorothy and one half-brother, Ernest Nemitz.

Survivors include his wife Emma of Ricketts, one brother Louis Hargens Sr. of Charter Oak, two sisters, Elonore, Mrs. John Meggers of Charter Oak and Esther, Mrs. Glen Wood of Denver, Colorado and two half brothers, Walter Nemitz of Omaha, Nebraska and William Nemitz of Storm Lake, Iowa.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 26, 1980, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hanover Township. Burial was in St. Paul's Cemetery. The Rev. S.W. Holstein officiated at the services. Pallbearers included Glen Henkel, Louis Hargens Jr., Jack Hargens, James Nemitz, Vernon Nemitz and Neil DeVries. Honorary pallbearers included Raymond Loeck, William Krueger, Edgar Glockzien, Wade Cooper, Herbert Bohlmann and Henry Meseck.

Alvin Otto Kutschinski (1913 - 2007)

Alvin Otto Kutschinski was born April 27, 1913, the son of Carl and Louise Jahn Kutschinski. He died at his home in Charter Oak on Saturday, January 13, 2007, at the age of ninety-three.

Alvin grew up on the family farm near Charter Oak, being baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church and receiving his education in both a rural school near his home and at St. John Lutheran School in Charter Oak. He worked on the farm for a time before entering the U.S. Army in 1942, and receiving his honorable discharge in 1945. He served as a surgical technician in northern France, Central Europe, the Rhineland, and the Ardennes. He was decorated with four bronze stars for those campaigns, the good conduct medal and the distinguished unit badge.

He was united in marriage to Dorothy Wiese at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. They settled in Charter Oak and were blessed with two daughters. Alvin was employed as a mechanic for Bob Butler and Clarence Kortman at the John Deere Implement Company in Charter Oak and later in construction for Don Friedrichs. He then worked in the maintenance department at Midwestern College and the Crawford County Memorial Hospital and as a custodian at St. John Lutheran Church. He was a faithful employee wherever he worked.

Alvin was a life long member of St. John Lutheran Church, where he was a voting member, served as an elder and superintendent of the Bible Class. He was a member of the American Legion Homer Hall Post 66 in Charter Oak, a long-time member of the Charter Oak Commercial Club, and was also a member of the Happiness Express since 1966.

He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, who in his leisure time, enjoyed fixing things for his grandchildren and around the house.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Erna Friedrichs and Olinda Schultz; two brothers Arthur and Elmer; one son-in-law, Norman D. Christensen and one grandson, Scot E. Christensen.

Survivors include: his wife, Dorothy of Charter Oak; two daughters, Karen Christensen of Coralville, Iowa and Linda Nepper and her husband, Allen of Charter Oak; three grandchildren: Allison Nepper Hales and her husband, David of Flower Mound, Texas; Megan Robertson and her husband, Andrew of Portland, Oregon; Greg Christensen and his wife, Kim of Coralville; three great-grandchildren, James, Jordan and Elle Christensen all of Coralville; one sister, Irene Lee of Denison and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 17, 2007 at St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. Richard Merrill officiated the services and grave side rites held at Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Art Beeck served as organist and soloist for the service music, "Now the Shades of Night Are Gone," "What a Friend We Have in Jesus," and "I'm But A Stranger Here." Those serving as pallbearers were Don Friedrichs, Kyle Schultz, Bill Magill, Kevin Clausen, Earl Schultz, and Ken Lally. Military Honors were provided by the American Legion Homer Hall Post 66 of Charter Oak, Iowa. A prayer service was held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday evening at the Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them in fellowship and lunch served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak was in charge of the arrangements.

Amanda Meggers was born April 30, 1912, the daughter of August and Sena Johannsen Brensel. She died July 24, 1987, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital at the age of 75. Amanda was baptized in the Lutheran faith as an infant and was confirmed on September 1, 1936.

On November 29, 1933, she was united in marriage to John A. Meggers at the Lutheran parsonage by Pastor William Frehse. Together they made their home on the family farm in Hanover Township where they lived until John retired from farming in 1963 and moved to Denison.

Amanda was preceded in death by her parents, her husband John, and two brothers. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Adela Kropf of Denison and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 27, 1987, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, with interment in the Morgan Township Cemetery. Rev. James Ristvedt officiated the service and graveside rites. Serving as pallbearers were: Wayne Brensel, Gilbert W. Moeller, Donald Listamann, Delaine Listamann, Walter Listamann and LeRoy Brensel.

Amelia Leona (Deconnick) Wolfe (1912 - 1979)

Amelia Leona Wolfe was born Jan. 30, 1912 in Crawford County, Iowa, the daughter of Peter and Emma Gremonprez Deconnick. She died May 22, 1979 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, at the age of 67.

Amelia was raised on a family farm near Denison. She received her education in the St. Rose of Lima School. She later attended a Teachers College in Shenandoah. She taught school in Goodrich Township, Crawford County, until the time of her marriage.

On Feb. 16, 1933 she was united in marriage to Matt Wolfe at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison. They farmed near Denison until 1936 when they moved to a farm near Kiron. Amelia retired in 1977 and has since continued to make her home on the farm near Kiron. She was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church as well as a member of its Ladies Guild.

In addition to her parents, Amelia was preceded in death by one brother in infancy. Survivors include her husband, Matt of Kiron; two daughters, Mary, Mrs. Duane Breon of Brown Deer, Wisc., and Joan, Mrs. Gene Kotz of Kiron; one son, William, of Hampton; ten grandchildren; one brother, Bernard Deconnick of Orange, Calif.; and two sisters, Margaret, Mrs. Leonard Keating of Charter Oak and Maxine, Mrs. Bob Lange of Lowpoint, Ill.

Funeral services were held May 25, at 2 p.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Denison. Burial was in St. Rose of Lima Cemetery. Father Lloyd W. White officiated at the Mass and graveside rites. Pallbearers included Clement Wolfe, Mike Keating, Leonard Keating Jr., Jim Jurgens, Roger Fineran and Dr. Charles Damico. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home, Denison.

Amelia Margaret (DeConnick) Wellendorf (1913 - 2002)

Amelia Margaret Wellendorf, daughter of August and Bridget (McNertney) DeConnick, was born March 13, 1918, in Crawford County, Iowa. She was baptized at St. Rose of Lima Church in Denison on March 24, 1918. She attended rural schools near her home and then Catholic School in Vail.

On May 1, 1937, Amelia was united in marriage with Fred E. Wellendorf in the Catholic Rectory in Ida Grove. Two children were born to this union. They lived and worked on the Wellendorf farm with his parents until the death of Fred's father when they farmed other places in the Ida Grove and Vail area. During this time, Amelia worked in the Ida Grove school system. While living near Vail,

Amelia was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla on May 23, 1963. In 1965 they had a farm sale and moved into Westside, where Amelia worked as a bookkeeper at Rose Feed.

Amelia's husband Fred, died on February 24, 1989, and she moved to Manning later that year to be near her daughter. Amelia lived at the Elm Crest Apartments until 1999 when her health began to fail and she became a resident of the Manning Plaza Nursing Home. She died there on Sunday, September 1, 2002, at the age of 84 years, 5 months and 19 days.

Amelia was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. Throughout her life, Amelia enjoyed cooking, baking and gardening. She and her husband liked to dance during their years together. In later years she found pleasure in visiting with her neighbors at Elm Crest Apartments.

Preceding Amelia in death are her parents; husband; sisters Anna Marie Ecklund, Elizabeth Miller, and Frances Jacobsen; and brother Joseph DeConnick.

She is survived by her son Richard Wellendorf and wife Kaye of Delmar, Delaware; daughter Rita and husband Gerald Beck of Manning; five grandchildren and their families: Kim and husband Ivan Krantz and children Katie and Dylan of Wyoming; Mark Wellendorf and his children Michael, Christopher, Courtney and Cassie of California; Dan Beck of Springfield, Missouri; Dave Beck and wife Shari and their sons Josh, Jacob and Joseph of Blair, Nebraska; and Donald Beck and wife Trisha and their daughters Brenna and Tiffani of Manning; sister-in-law Iona and husband Laverne Thraer of Omaha, Nebraska, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Thursday, September 5, 2002 at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning at 10:30 a.m. Pastor Daniel Vogel officiated the service and interment held in the Morgan Township Cemetery in Schleswig, Iowa. Carlys Stribe served as organist accompaniment for congregational hymns "How Great Thou Art", "Amazing Grace", and "I Know That My Redeemer Lives". Those serving as casketbearers were Glen Wellendorf, Robert Wellendorf, Jerry Thraen, Charles Miller, Leonard Walde and Dick Hugg. The family invited everyone in attendance of the service to join them for fellowship and lunch at the church following the service. The Ohde Funeral Home in Manning was in charge of the arrangements.

Andrew D. Clausen (1910 - 1998)

Andrew D. Clausen was born August 4,1910, on a farm two miles south of Ida Grove, the son of Andrew and Cathrine Iversen Clausen. He died Tuesday, October 27,1998 at the Morningside Rehab and Care Center in Ida Grove, Iowa at the age of eighty-eight.

He was baptized in Christ and later confirmed in the Christian faith at the Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Church in Schleswig in 1929, by the Rev. K. Kielhorn. He received his formal education in a rural school near his home where he received his 8th grade diploma.

On January 25, 1939, Andrew was united in marriage to Bernice Janssen in the Friedens Church by the Rev. A.F. Rinnie. The couple settle on a farm in the Schleswig area where they farmed together, and were blessed with the birth of three children. Andrew and Bernice retired in 1972 and moved to Schleswig, but Andrew continued to help his son, Leon with the planting, harvesting and, as his grandchildren fondly remember, "walking beans with grandpa."

In 1992, Andrew suffered a stroke, and his health failed. In 1994, he entered the Morningside Rehab and Care Center in Ida Grove. Andrew was a lifelong member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, served on the Church Council and was a member of the Church Brotherhood. Additionally, he served for several years on the board of the Ida Grove Coop.

He was an avid reader of the western classics authored by Zane Grey and Louis Lamour; and also enjoyed reading books about American history. In addition to western classics and history, Andrew was especially fond of reciting poetry when he and his family milked cows by hand. Andrew was a very beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was devoted to his family and his Lord.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Jurgen; three brothers-in-law, Edgar Else, Allen Janssen and Frank Iversen; and two sisters-in-law, Irene Clausen and Ethel Iversen.

is survived by his wife, Bernice; two sons, Larry and his wife, JoAnn and Leon and his wife, Phyllis all of Schleswig; and one daughter, Kathleen Schwarz and her husband, Wendell of Saginaw, Michigan, ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Also, three brothers, Herbert and Sylvia Clausen, Leonard and Mildred Clausen, Paul Clausen and two sisters, Frieda Else and Anna and Lenhardt Teut and one sister-in-law, Ruth Janssen all of Schleswig as well as a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, October 31, 1998 at the United Church of Christ, Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Gordon Hoyt officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery, Schleswig. Evelyn Johnson provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Rubie Kastner singing, "Nearer, My God, to Thee" and "On Eagles Wings" and congregational hymn "Holy, Holy, Holy." Pallbearers were Andrew Schwarz, Wendy Schwarz. Paula Schwarz, Gerrad Clausen, Lance Clausen, Steve Clausen, Grant Clausen, Greg Clausen, Scott Clausen and Lynn Kenny. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Women's Guild. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of arrangements.

Andrew H. Klotz (1915 - 1994)

Andrew H. Klotz, age 79, of Mapleton died Monday, December 26, 1994 in Mapleton. Services were held 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton with Pastor Charles Adams officiating. Burial was in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Mapleton, With military graveside honors by the American Legion Loren Hollister Post #496 of Mapleton. Norma Jean Dose was the organist for the service and the congregation sang, "How Great Thou Art" and "Amazing Grace".

Andrew H. Klotz was born July 1, 1915, at Schleswig, Iowa, the son of Henry and Minnie (Hollander) Klotz. He grew up in Schleswig and graduated from high school. He went on to serve in the U.S. Marine Corp in World War II.

On July 8, 1944, he married Mary Jane Schlieff at El Centro, California. The coupled returned to Schleswig where he operated a grocery store for 10 years. They then moved to Mapleton where he owned and operated Klotz Food Market. Since retiring, he enjoyed his summers fishing at Lake Okoboji.

Andy was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton, the American Legion, the V.F.W., the Mapleton Rotary, Mapleton Progress, Mapleton Club, and the Willow Vale Golf Club. He was also a 20 year member of the Volunteer Firemen at Schleswig and Secretary of the Grocer Wholesalers in Des Moines for a number of years.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Jane Klotz of Mapleton; a son and his wife, Brad and Shirley Klotz and children, Jason and John of Piano, Texas; a daughter and her husband, Peggy and Rob Whitsit and children, Jamie and Molly of Lincoln, Nebraska; a brother and his wife, Eldo and Chris Klotz of Portland, Oregon; two sisters, Lorraine Spahn of Mapleton and Marion and her husband, Milo Jensen of Geneva, Nebraska. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister.

Pallbearers were Jamie Hunt, Jim Burgeson, Rob Whitsit, Rick Nichols, Jason Klotz, John Klotz and Grant Scoles. Arrangements were made under the direction of the Walter-Armstrong Funeral Home of Mapleton.

Anita (Hinricksen) Werneburg (1919 - 2004)

Anita Werneburg was bom on a farm in Goodrich Township, Denison, Iowa, January 11, 1919, the daughter of Peter and Anna Freida Ludeman Hinricksen.

She was received into God's Kingdom of Grace through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism June 29, 1919 at Zion Lutheran Church and confirmed in her Christian faith there April 14, 1935. She was raised on the family farm and received her education in the local rural schools. Following her schooling she was employed doing domestic work in the area.

On March 30, 1938, Anita was united in marriage with Christopf Werneburg at the Zion Lutheran Church Parsonage in Denison by the Rev. Carl Schmidt. They made their home in Schleswig and their union was blessed with seven children, Richard, Judy, Wayne, Roger, Donna, Eugene and Janice. In 1955 they moved to Denison where they resided until moving to Charter Oak in 1968, returning to Denison in 1976.

Anita's life was spent as a loving mother, wife and homemaker. Her greatest joy was caring for her family, providing for them by sewing, cooking, gardening and canning. In her spare time she enjoyed tending her flowers.

Christopf died August 6,1994 and Anita continued to reside in Denison, later residing at Ida Grove.

On June 9, 2000, Anita entered Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison and it was there her death occurred Monday evening, May 3, 2004. At the time of her death she had been blessed with 85 years, 3 months and 22 days.

Anita was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, one sister, Esther Groth and one son-in-law, Hans Malone.

Those remaining to cherish her memory include her seven children, Richard Werneburg of Denison; Judy Malone of Lake View, Iowa; Wayne Werneburg of Nebraska; Roger Werneburg, Sr. and wife, Nancy of Ida Grove, Iowa; Donna and husband, Cliford Reynolds of Joaquin, Texas; Eugene Werneburg of Denison and Janice and husband, Steven Bierstedt of Lake View, Iowa, 20 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, one brother, Leo Hinricksen and wife, Jackie of Salem, Arkansas, two sisters, Anna Reichert of Waukesha, Wisconsin and Ida Taylor of Osceola, Missouri, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Memorial services were held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, May 7, 2004 at the Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa with the Rev. Kurt R. Kaiser and the Rev. David M. Sewing officiating. Music for the service included recorded selections of "How Great Thou Art", "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" and "Rock Of Ages, Cleft For Me". Inurnment was at Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Denison. Following the services the family invited everyone to join them for a luncheon at Zion Lutheran Church served by the Zion Ladies Aid. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was privileged to be selected to provide arrangements and services.

Anna Fredericks (1910 - 2003)

Anna Fredericks was born September 12,1910, the daughter of Henry and Marie Kiepe Fredericks. She died Saturday, May 10; 2003 at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa at the age of ninety-two.

Anna was born in Denison, Iowa. She was baptized in Christ on December 2, 1910 at Zion Lutheran in Denison and later confirmed there on April 5,1925. She received her education at Hanover Township Number 7 and completed her education at the Zion Lutheran School in Denison. After receiving her education, Anna and her sisters worked for area farm families doing housekeeping.

In the late in 1940's, Anna worked as a store clerk at Harker's Variety Store in Denison. After Harker's closed, she worked at Moorehouse Grocery in the meat department and at Super Value until retirement.

Anna attended a school for sewing in Denison and enjoyed sewing dresses and suits for other people. She enjoyed crocheting many quilts and baby quilts. She also enjoyed baking, especially bread. Anna was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.

Anna was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Elsie Petersen and her husband, Walter; Bernice Suntken and her husband, Clarence; brother, Raymond Fredericks; brother-in-law, Rudolph Petersen; and one nephew, Lyle Petersen.

Survivors include one brother, Harold Fredericks and his wife, Evelyn; one sister, Lorena Petersen; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Fredericks, all of Denison; nephews and nieces, Glen Petersen and his wife, Norma of Denison; Gene Petersen and his wife, Eloise of Des Moines; Joyce Petersen of Charter Oak; John Feddersen; Duane Hollander and his wife, Eunice; Raymond Fredericks Jr. and his wife, Beverly, all of Denison; Richard Fredericks and his wife, Virgene of Schleswig; Dean Fredericks and his wife, Betty of York, Nebraska; Jeff Suntken and his wife, Jan; Michelle Suntken, all of Sioux City; and Susan Hinze and her husband, Kenya of Africa.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 14, 2003 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Denison. Organist Karen Kahl provided the music for congregational hymns "Asleep in Jesus! Blessed Sleep", "I'm But a Stranger Here" and "I Know that My Redeemer Lives". Pallbearers were: Raymond Fredericks Jr., Richard Fredericks, Duane Hollander, Dean Fredericks, Gene Petersen and Jeff Suntken. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Dorcas Society. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Anna Ida Ella (Hansen) Schroeder (1914 - 1989)

Anna Ida Ella Schroeder, the daughter of Charles and Mary Boyens Hansen, was born on March 14, 1914, in Goodrich Township, Crawford County, Ia. She died on June 7, 1989, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, at the age of 75 years.

Anna attended rural school in Goodrich Township and attended Zion Lutheran School in Denison one year. After her education, she helped in various neighboring homes as needed.

On November 11, 1934, Anna and J. Henry Schroeder of Denison were united in marriage at the Zion Lutheran Parsonage in Denison. This union was blessed with two daughters. After marriage, they farmed in Crawford County until 1973, when they moved to Schleswig. She was custodian of the Schleswig Post Office from 1977 to 1986. She and J. Henry were custodians of the community room at the Schleswig retirement apartments from 1981 to 1988.

Anna was baptized on May 17, 1914, and she was confirmed on April 13, 1930, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig and also a member of the Ladies Aid and the Lamplighters. Although she had many activities, her first concern was her family.

Preceding Anna in death were her parents; her stepmother; two sisters: Vernette Nehls and Fern Schmidt.

Survivors include her husband, J. Henry Schroeder of Schleswig; two daughters: Marlene and her husband, Wilbur Chaney of Omaha, Neb., and Judith and her husband, Gary Koch of Fort Dodge; five grand-children: Kelli and Jay Chaney, Jill Juergensen, Jenni and Ryan Koch; one great-grandchild, Jon David Flower; two brothers: Raymond Hansen and his wife, Elvira, and Vernon Hansen and his wife, Bette, all of Denison; one sister, Elsie Schroeder of Schleswig; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ralph and Luella Reincke of Schleswig. Also nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, June 10, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. Pastor Richard Nelson and pastor Kenneth Hessel officiated. Interment was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. Mrs. Marlene Hight was organist with congregational singing. Selections were "How Great Thou Art" and "Nearer My God to Thee." Serving as pallbearers were Merlin Jurgensen, Walter Woebke, Earl Schmidt, Wilbert Groth, Arlo Jensen and Robert Beeck. Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of arrangements.

Anna L. (Ipsen) Schiernbeck (1912 - 1977)

Anna L. Schiernbeck was born on March 17, 1912, in Crawford County, Iowa, the daughter of Anton and Marie Ipsen. She died at her home on Saturday, April 2, 1977, at the age of 65.

As a young girl, Anna was raised and educated in Crawford County. She was baptized and confirmed in 1928 at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig.

On February 7, 1934, she was united in marriage to George Schiernbeck at Schleswig. Together they lived and farmed in Ida County until 1966 when they retired and moved to Schleswig. George passed away in 1972 and Anna continued to live and work in Schleswig.

Anna was a member of the United Church of Christ and the Women's Guild and was employed in Schleswig at the time of her death.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by one infant brother.

Survivors include: two brothers, Werner Ipsen of Schleswig and Lorenz Ipsen of Des Moines, Iowa; two sisters, Helen, Mrs. E.B. Gerganus of Las Vegas, Nevada and Elsabe, Mrs. John Niklai of Imperial Beach, California, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, April 6, 1977, at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. The Rev. Fred Moore officiated at the services. Music was provided by Malinda Evers, Jeanette Grell and Evelyn Johnson. Hymns of praise were "Beyond the Sunset" and "Nearer My God to Thee". Pallbearers were John Fick, Verdean Rossow, Jeff Lewis, Marc Kollbaum, Arthur Ipsen and Gary Ipsen. Burial was made in Morgan Cemetery.
