Roy Raymond Kropf (1907 - 1981)
Roy Raymond Kropf was born on Mar. 4, 1907, near Schleswig, Iowa, the son of Charlie and Emma Miller Kropf. He died on Tuesday afternoon, June 2, 1981, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, at the age of 74.Roy was raised on a farm near Schleswig for a brief time. Later the family moved to a farm near Kiron. He received his formal education in the rural schools in Otter Creek Township.
On Dec. 19, 1934, Roy was united in marriage to Adela Brensel at Denison. Together they made their home on a farm near Kiron. In 1945, Roy moved to Denison. He was employed with Farmland Foods for a number of years. Roy retired 14 years ago due to ill health, and has since continued to make Denison his home.
Roy was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at St. John's Luthern Church in Stockholm Township. Since moving to Denison he has been a member of Zion Lutheran Church.
In addition to his parents, Roy was preceded in death by one sister, Hilda and three brothers, Henry, Arnold and Otto.
Survivors include his wife Adela of Denison, one son Robert and his wife Mary, three grandchildren, Jared, Jeff and Megan, one brother Edward of Wall Lake and one sister, Lulu, (Mrs. Vernie Baker) of Kiron.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, June 4, 1981, at 2 p.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. The Rev. Jack Heck officiated at the services. Serving as pallbearers were Jim Kropf, Wayne Baker, Wayne Brensel, Allan Brotherson, Albert Schwanz and LeRoy Brensel. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Ruby (Wilken) Howorth (1907 - 1997)
Ruby Wilken Howorth was born July 31, 1907, at Westside, Iowa, the daughter of Hans and Mary Ohde Wilken. She was received into God's Kingdom of Grace through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism in 1907 and confirmed in his Christian Faith in 1923 at St. John.'s Church in Westside.She lived on a farm northwest of Westside for seventeen years and in 1925 the family moved to a farm south of Denison. Ruby attended rural school in Jackson Township through the 8th grade and was graduated from Denison High School with the class of 1925. Following graduation she taught in rural schools and worked as a checker in Moore Brothers Grocery Store.
On March 21, 1930 Ruby was united in marriage to James Howorth in the Methodist Parsonage at which time she joined the church. To this union two children were born Donovan and Diane. James and Ruby farmed south of Denison for 50 years. In 1976 they moved into Denison. In 1980 James and Ruby celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at the Methodist Church.
Ruby loved her family and greatly enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a member of the Methodist Womens Circle for many years.
James died June 3, 1988 and Ruby continued to reside in their home moving to the Denison Care Center September 20, 1995, and it was there her death occurred on January 20, 1997. At the time of her death she had attained the age of 89 years, 5 months, and 19 days.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of over 58 years, James. Those who remain to cherish her memory in their hearts include her son Donovan and his wife Evelyn of Ashland, Nebraska, and her daughter Diane McAninch of Denison, Iowa, 6 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, one sister-in-law, Sara Howorth of Sioux City, Iowa, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, January 20, 1997 at the First United Methodist Church in Denison with Dr. Edward R. Peterson officiating. Karen Kahl served as organist and Larry Boeck served as soloist singing "Beyond The Sunset" with the congregation singing "In The Garden". Casket bearers included Joe and Jerry Coleman, Les Brown, Kevin Fink, Dennis Bergstadt, and Virgil Walde. Interment was in the Oakland Cemetery in Denison, Iowa. A memorial has been established to the First United Methodist Church. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa was in charge of the arrangements.

Rudolph Everett Garrett (1901 - 1988)
Rudolph Everett Garrett was born on Jan. 9, 1901 in Paradise Township, Crawford County, Iowa the son of John B. and Edith Feinhold Garrett. He died on May 17, 1988 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital at the age of 87 years.Everett received his early education in the country school system. As a child he moved with his parents to Lebanon, S.D. where the family farmed until 1910. They then moved back to Paradise Township, where he lived until 1927 when he moved to a farm near Wall, S.D.
Everett was united in marriage to Emma L. Petersen, of Dow City on Jan. 30, 1937 at Rapid City, S.D. He was a loving husband and a caring father who devoted his life to his family.
Everett and Emma lived in South Dakota for three years and then moved back to Crawford County in 1940 and farmed his aunt's farm for five years. In 1945 they moved to Rapid City, S.D. and lived there for 12 years. In 1957 they moved to a farm north of Dow City. On July 21, 1985 Everett and Emma retired to Dow City and were living there at the time of his death.
Everett was baptized and confirmed as an adult in 1947, at Zion Lutheran Church in Rapid City, S.D. He was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Dow City, and served as Elder of his church.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Fred. Those surviving are his wife, Emma; one son, Darryl and his wife, Barbara of Manassas, VA.; five grandchildren, Dawn Matteoni, Cheryl Roberts, Mark, Pamela, and Scott Everett Garrett. Also surviving is one great grandchild, Amber Christine Roberts and one brother, Leolan Garrett of Dow City.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 19, 1988 at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Dow City. Rev. Paul Stengel officiated at the services and graveside rites at the Dow City Cemetery in Dow City. Mrs. Darrell Ketelsen was organist and Henry Henningsen was soloist. Selections were "Just As I Am" and "I'm But a Stranger Here." Honorary pallbearers were Robert Petersen, Donald E. Petersen, Arlen Petersen and Douglas Petersen. Serving as pallbearers were Beryl Garrett, Alan Garrett, John Garrett, Larry Garrett, Don Garrett and Glenn Petersen. Funeral services were under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison.

Sallie Jedele (Jadele) Ahrenholtz (1905 - 1998)
Sallie Jedele Ahrenholtz, daughter of George and Salome Koenig Jadele was born May 7, 1905, in Mietesheim Alsace Lorraine, Germany. She came to American with her family in 1907 and settled in Crawford County.On January 23, 1924, Sallie was united in marriage to Peter Ahrenholtz in Denison. They farmed in the Manilla, Defiance, and Denison areas until 1968 when they retired and moved into Manilla. Peter died November 4, 1978.
Sallie was an active member of the Defiance United Methodist Church since 1924, where she enjoyed working in the various women's organizations. She did a lot of needle work, making needle point work for all the family. Sallie also enjoyed crocheting, china painting, raising flowers and gardening.
On Saturday, September 26, 1998, Sallie died at Reed House in Denison, reaching the age of 93 years, 4 months and 19 days.
Besides her parents and husband, Sallie was preceded in death by a daughter, Lucille in 1936, two grandchildren Jill and Kipp Ahrenholtz, three siblings in Germany, a brother George, a half-brother Charles, two sisters: Margaret Holdsworth and Martha in infancy, and a son-in-law Philip Shepperd.
Sallie is survived by four sons: Wesley Ahrenholtz and his wife Vergene, Willis Ahrenholtz and his wife Delores, Leonard Ahrenholtz and his wife Shirley, Jim Ahrenholtz and his wife Karen, all of Denison; four daughters: Loretta Shepperd of Atlantic, Ruth and her husband Gil Carstens of Loveland, Colorado, Martha and her husband Bob Camden of Sedalia, Missouri, Marie Jennings of Kirkland, Washington; 19 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren, and by nieces, nephews, other relative and many friends.
Visitation was held Tuesday, September 29, 1998 at Ohde Funeral Home in Manilla after 3:00 p.m. Funeral services were held Wednesday, September 30, 1998 at 2:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, Defiance, Iowa, with Rev. Joseph Boysen officiating. Paulette Rasmussen provided the organ accompaniment for vocalists Ted Ahrenholtz and Michelle Ahrenholtz singing "Precious Lord, Take My Hand", "On Eagle's Wings", and a medley of "Wind Beneath My Wings". Interment was in Union Township Cemetery, Defiance, Iowa with Sallie's grandchildren as casketbearers. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them for lunch and fellowship at the church. The Ohde Funeral Home in Manilla was in charge of arrangements.

Selma M. W. (Rusch) Rosburg (1905 - 1998)
Selma M. W. Rosburg was born November 16, 1905, the daughter of Henry and Lena Koeppen Rusch. She died on Wednesday, May 6, 1998, at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa at the age of ninety-two.Selma was born on a farm, near Schleswig, Iowa and was baptized in Christ on December 25, 1905 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hanover Township by Rev. Runge. She was later confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig on March 20, 1921 by Rev. Firnhaber. Selma received her education at a rural school near Schleswig and the Schleswig Community High School.
After completing her education, Selma helped on the family farm, until her marriage to Edwin A. Rosburg on February 7, 1926 at Schleswig, Iowa. The couple settled on a farm west of Ricketts for eleven years, before moving to Ricketts in 1932. Later in 1942, the couple moved to Charter Oak, where Selma worked in various cafes and lounges. Selma was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak, American Legion Auxiliary, Golden Oaks and Charter Oak Senior Citizens.
She was a very loving wife, mother and grandmother who loved flowers and gardening. She did volunteer work for West Central Development Corporation in Dunlap and Denison, Girl Scout Camps at Boone and the Lutheran Camp at Okoboji.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Edwin who died in a truck accident in 1946.
Survivors include one daughter, Sally Carstens and special friend, Robert Heckmann of Denison; three sons, Edward Rosburg and his wife, Dorothy of Elizabeth, Colorado; Douglas Rosburg and his wife, Betty of Cape Canaveral, Florida; Vernon Rosburg of Denver, Colorado; ten grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.

Sophia Maria (Thomsen) Ransom (1901 - 1990)
Sophia Maria Ransom was born June 21, 1901 in Denison, Ia., the daughter of Andrew and Margretha Abertsen Thomsen, and died on her birth day June 21, of this year (1990) at the age of 89 years.Sophia lived on the farm with her parents and attended a rural school near her home. She was baptized a Christian in 1901 and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith on April 16, 1916, at Zion Lutheran Church. As a young girl, she remained on the farm and assisted as needed.
On June 16, 1935, Sophia was united in marriage to Earl Ramson of Denison, and were they were blessed with two children, a son Edward Lee and a daughter, Jolene, who died as an infant.
They made their home on a farm in the Denison area where they farmed until retiring to Denison. Sophia was a member of the Dorcas Society of Zion Lutheran Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Earl, June 10 of this year; one daughter, Jolene; one sister, Mag Signal and one brother, Andrew Thomsen.
Surviviors include her son Edward and his wife, Carol of Walnut; one granddaughter, Debbie and her husband, Kevin Brix of Walnut; and one great grandson, Trey Brix, at home with his parents are: two sisters, Paulina Denker of Denison, and Hertha Evers and her husband, Edward, also of Denison; and one sister-in-law, Ella Thomsen of Denison.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m., Monday, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Pastor Kurt Kaiser officiated at the services with interment in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Denison. Mrs. Karen Kahl was organist and Henry Henningsen, soloist. Solo selections were: "In The Garden" and "The Lord's Prayer." The congregational hymn was "I'm But A Stranger Here". Serving as pallbearers were: John Lorenzen, Ralph Vogt, Alfred Schoenfeld, Clarence Denker, Elmer Denker and Derald Evers.

Sophie D. (Dersein) Pobanz (1900 - 1993)
Sophie D. Pobanz was born October 15, 1900, the daughter of William and Catherine Radeck Dersein. She died May 19, 1993 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison at the age of ninety-two years.Sophie was born in Westside Township, Crawford County, Iowa. She attended a rural school near her home and subsequently helped the family on the farm.
On June 24, 1922, she was united in marriage to Fritz Pobanz at the Zion Lutheran Parsonage in Denison. The couple settled on a farm two miles south east of Deloit, and were blessed with the birth of two children.
They farmed until Fritz died on May 31, 1962. In 1963, Sophie moved to Deloit. Sophie was a loving and caring wife and mother having compassion for those in need and always showing kindness to everyone. She enjoyed cooking and baking and occupied her time in the community with her memberships with the Deloit American Legion Auxiliary and Faith Ladies Aid. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Deloit.
She was predeceasd by her parents; husband, Fritz; six brothers and three sisters.
Survivors include one son, Paul and his special friend, Opal Stommel of Denison; one daughter, Christine Ehlers of Bronson, Iowa; seven grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law; Louise Freund of Buck Grove Iowa and Lorraine Dersein of Denison; also many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., Saturday, May 22,1993 at the Faith Lutheran Church in Deloit, Iowa. Pastor Hilmer Hafner officiated the service and graveside rites held at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Denison. Erna Mae Aldag provided the organ accompaniment for congregational humns "The Old Rugged Cross," "In the Cross of Christ I Glory" and "Crown Him with Many Crowns. Pallbearers were: Marvin Huelsing, Richard Holihan, Larry Lohrmann, Lonnie Eh-lers, LaVern Ehlers and Larry Ehlers. The Walter A. Huebner and Sons' Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Sylvester K. Schwieso (1902 - 1984)
Sylvester K. Schwieso was born August 19, 1902, at Manilla, Iowa, the son of Wm. and Malonie Schoning Schwieso. He died December 2, 1984, at the age of 82 at Tucson, Arizona.Sylvester spent his life farming. On February 12, 1930, he was united in marriage to Clara Ernst.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Earl, Wilbert, Herman, Harold and Bernard all from Manilla, and sisters Alvena (Mrs. Robert Seivertsen), Amanda (Mrs. Ed Vennink), and Myrtle (Mrs. Glen Lightield), one granddaughter Amy and one grandson Lacy.
Survivors include his wife Clara, one son, Douglas and his wife Rose, four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, one brother, Edward, and two sisters, Hattie Stickelberg from Harlan and Bernadine, Mrs. Chris Christensen from Manilla.
Graveside services were held at 10:00 a .m . December 4, 1984, at the South Lawn Cemetery in Tucson, Arizona, with Rev. Ernest G.C. Lewis officiating. Songs were "Good Night Down Here and Good Morning Up There" and "Till We Meet Again".

Theodore Friedrichsen (1904 - 1984)
Theodore Friedrichsen was born on July 12, 1904, in Otter Creek Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the son of Fredrick, and Rosa Bielenberg Friedrichsen. He died Sept. 12, 1984 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, at the age of 80.Ted was raised on a family farm. He received his formal education in the rural schools near his family home. During most of his life, Ted worked as a farm laborer. For many years he made his home in the area of Schleswig, and Kiron. After his retirement he entered the Crawford County Care Facility near Arion.
In addition to his parents, Ted was preceded in death by four brothers, Julius, Emil, Berhardt and Knut and by two sisters, Malinda Marth and Frieda Aldag.
Survivors include, one sister Wanda, Mrs. Arthur Spahn of Storm Lake and by several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Sept. 14, at 10:30 a.m. at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. The Rev. Dr. Scott Woodworth officiated at the services. Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist with Henry Henningsen as soloist. Hymns included How Great Thou Art and The Lord's Prayer. Pallbearers were Burdell Griedrichsen, Willard Friedrichsen, Clarence Friedrichsen, Ray Gonnerman. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison.

Verne Frederick Henry Gronau (1908 - 2004)
Verne Frederick Henry Gronau was born March 17, 1908, the son of Charles and Alvin Schultz Gronau. He died on Wednesday, June 23, 2004 at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa at the age if ninety-six.Verne was born on the family farm near Kiron, Iowa. He was baptized on April 26, 1908 at the St. John's Lutheran Church in Stockholm Township and later confirmed there on April 9, 1922. Verne received his formal education in the Stockholm #4 Rural School.
On June 17, 1936, Verne was united in marriage to Edna Aldag at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Grant Township, Ida County. They made their home on a farm southeast of Kiron and were blessed with the birth of two daughters, Elaine and Lois.
Verne was a life-long member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Kiron, where he held various offices. Prior to entering Eventide May 6, 2004, Vernie lived on the family farm his entire life and next to his family, farming was his life.
Preceding Vernie in death were his parents, his wife, Edna in 1986, one daughter, Elaine and a sister, Laura Koch. Survivors include his daughter, Lois Gronau of Kiron; many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, June 26, 2004 at the St. John's Lutheran Church in Kiron, Iowa. Vicar Mark Hansen officiated the service and grave side rites held at the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery in Kiron. Mary Ellen Hafner provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me", "I Know that My Redeemer Lives" and "Our God, Our Help in Ages Past". Those serving as pallbearers were: Vernie Giermann, Jerry Gronau, Dale Gronau, Verlin Koch, Roger Baker and Elroy Koch. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, catered by the Lidderdale Country Store and assisted by the St. John's Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Veronika (Hansen) Jacobs (1908 - 1975)
Funeral services for Veronika Jacobs were held Monday September 22, 1975, at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig with Rev. Fred Moore officiating. Mrs. John Evers was the organist. Mrs. G. M. Johnson and Mrs. Ernie Grell sang "What A Friend We Have in Jesus" and "Heaven is My Home".Veronika Jacobs, nee Hansen, was born March 5, 1908 to Hans Hansen and his wife, Sophia nee Jochims, on a farm in Otter Creek Township, Crawford County, Iowa, and departed from this life at her farm home Friday evening, September 19, 1975, having reached the age of 67 years, 6 months and 14 days.
She was a baptized and confirmed member of the United Church of Christ of Schleswig.
She married Albert Jacobs on December 16, 1925 at Battle Creek, Iowa. To this union were born four children, Gloria, who passed away in 1934; Sharon (Mrs. Jerry Chapman) who passed away in 1973; Fred Jacobs of Schleswig and Wilma (Mrs. Bill Brockman) of Schleswig; and four grandchildren.
Her husband Albert, her parents, and two brothers all preceded her in death.
Veronika had been in failing health the past several months and passed away at her home Friday, September 19. She was an active member of the Women's Guild of the church at the time of her death.
Bearers were Kim Brockman David Wenberg, Ervin Jochims, Terry Brockman, Lavern Jochims and Lester Jochims. Interment was made in Morgan Cemetery.

Victor C. Schwarz (1908 - 1991)
Victor C. Schwarz was born July 24, 1908, the son of William C. and Christina Wittholm Schwarz. He died March 23, 1991 at his shop in Ricketts, Iowa at the age of 82 years.Victor was brought up on the family farm in Soldier Twp. where he began his life in Christ through holy baptism at Immanuel Lutheran Church near his home. He received his education in Immanuel's Parochial School and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith also at Immanuel. After completing his education, he began his employment with the county.
On June 7, 1932, Victor and Anna Kollbaum were united in marriage at Ponca, Neb. The couple returned to Ricketts where they made their home and were blessed with the birth of two children.
Victor continued his employment with the county until the early forties when they moved to his home farm. They farmed for about ten years before returning to Ricketts where he purchased the Phillips 66 station which he owned and operated for thirty years.
His devotion to the community in which he lived is evidenced by his twenty-seven years of service as Mayor of Ricketts and twenty-nine years as its Fire Chief. Additionally, he served as Soldier Twp. Clerk, a position lasting forty-one years. In other functions, he served as a member of the City Council and the election board of which he was still active.
Throughout his career in public service, he received many awards in addition to a letter from Gov. Robert Ray commending him on his long and inspiring efforts as Mayor of Ricketts. Other honors he received were associated with his notable performance in the petroleum industry and as an independent business man.
His Christian character was illustrated by the dedication he had for his Lord and Savior. As a member of the St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Ricketts, Vic served as elder, president and secretary, in addition to his memberships with the LLL and the AAL.
He was a loyal husband and a loving father who cared for his family with an affection that will be remembered throughout their lives.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.
Survivors include his wife, Anna of Ricketts; one son, Robert and his wife, Nancy of Des Moines, and one daughter, Barbara Jensen of Spokane, Wash., also five grandchildren; and two brothers, Ben and his wife, Berniece of Whitewater, Mont., and Paul and his wife, Emma Jean of Ricketts.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 27, at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Ricketts with Pastor Robert Hines officiating the service and the graveside rites at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Marlene Lee served as organist accompanied by Stephen Claussen as trumpeter for congregational singing of "Rock of Ages," "What a Friend We Have in Jesus," "Nearer My God to Thee" and "I'm But a Stranger Here." Trumpeter's solo arrangements were "God Be With You" and "Onward Christian Soldiers." Serving as pallbearers were: Wayne Kuhlmann, Albert Bullmann, Delmer Clausen, Paul Briggle, Gerald Jors, Richard Knop and Kenneth Baak. Walter A. Huebner & Sons' Funeral Home of Charter Oak was in charge of arrangements.

Violet Amanda (Friedrichsen) Moeller (1905 - 1990)
Violet Amanda Moeller, the daughter of Martin and Anna Gottburg Friedrichsen, was born near Kiron, Ia., March 27, 1905, and died Saturday, May 5, 1990, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison at the age of 85 years.As a child, she received her education in a rural school near her home where she also helped with work on the farm and in the home.
Violet and Robert M. Moeller were united in marriage Dec. 20, 1922, in the parsonage of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. They made their home on the family farm where they reared the six children they were blessed with. In 1936, she was baptized and confirmed in the Christian Faith at the Friedens Church in Schleswig.
Throughout her life, Violet worked hard, first as a child and then as a wife and mother. She dedicated her life to her family, enjoyed the time spent caring for her family, and had a sincere affection for her children and grandchildren which gave her the endurance she had. She enjoyed cooking, baking and socializing with her family and friends and the time she spent with those she loved will always be remembered by those she loved.
After her husband's death in 1949, Violet continued to farm. In 1962, she moved to Denison where she worked for St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church cooking for the nuns, and serving as housekeeper for Fr. Lloyd White for many years.
Preceding Violet in death were her parents; her husband, Robert; one son, Richard; five brothers and three sisters.
Survivors include her children: LaMae Miller of Ida Grove, Robert Moeller of Sioux City, Charlene and her husband, Howard Iversen of Vail, Maxine Hansohn of Bettendorf, and Sharon and her husband, Charles Bandow of Denison; 17 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren and her daughter-in-law, Joan Moeller of Denison.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Rev. Joseph Boysen officiated at the services with interment in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. The musical selection was "How Great Thou Art."
Serving as pallbearers were Daryl Miller, Duane Miller, Ross Iversen, Robert Iversen, Scott Hansohn, Brian Moeller, Jim Iversen, Randy Miller, Mike Miller and Robert Paul Moeller. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Walter A. Huebner & Sons' funeral service in Denison.

Walter A. Bugge (1904 - 1985)
Note: Only year of death written on newspaper clipping.IDA GROVE, Iowa - Walter A. Bugge, 81, of Ida Grove, died Friday at the care center in Ida Grove.
Services will be at 10 p.m. Monday in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Ida Grove. The Rev. Dennis Schultz will officiate. Burial will be in Morgan Township Cemetery at Schleswig.
Mr. Bugge was born Jan. 11, 1904, in Sac County. He was a lifelong area resident. He farmed near Ricketts. He moved to Ida Grove in 1980.
He married Elsie Ehler Oct. 19, 1927. She died June 23, 1974, at Ricketts. He married Mrs. Leona Burr Sept. 10, 1977, in Ricketts. She died Feb. 13, 1979 at Ricketts.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Donald (Karen) Yates of Galva; one son, Gary of Minneapolis, Minn.; six grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Theo (Maebelle) Murphy, and Mrs. Fred (Laura Mae) Weber, and one brother Ernest, all of Ida Grove.

Walter Ernest Doidge (1908 - 1995)
Walter Ernest Doidge was born on a farm in East Boyer Township, Crawford County, Iowa, December 6, 1908, the son of William Roger and Sophia Maria Plough Doidge. He was a lifelong Crawford County resident living in East Boyer, Willow and Hanover Townships before moving to Denison in 1964 where he remained until his death.Walter was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Denison and received the Holy Sacrament of Baptism in 1924. He was a member of the American Legion Post 8 and Ninus L. Hunt WW Post 2504 in Denison.
Walter received his education at East Boyer Country School through the second grade, finishing his education at the North Brick School in Denison. He served his country during World War II as a Medic with the 232nd Service Battalion in North Africa and Italy.
Following his return from the war in 1945 he farmed with his brother until 1964 when he moved to Denison and was employed at Bohlmann Concrete Specialities until his retirement in 1972. Following his retirement Walter could be found with his friends shooting a game of pool or bowling.
Walter moved to the Eventide Apartments in 1985 and entered Eventide Lutheran Home in 1987 where his death occurred Saturday morning, February 4, 1995. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 86 years, 1 month and 28 days.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Edward, Leon and Roy Doidge and one sister, Marie Davis.
Those who remain to cherish his memory include one brother, Francis Doidge of Denison, two sisters, Edna and Irene Doidge both of Denison, one sister-in-law, Helen Doidge of Castana, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 7, 1995 at the First United Methodist Church in Denison with Dr. Edward R. Peterson officiating. Karen Kahl served as organist playing two hymns, "How Great Thou Art" and "In The Garden'! Casket bearers included Wayne Petersen, Dennis Jepsen, Denny Neppl, Vince Keating, Verl Bartlett and Gene Champion. Interment with Military Honors provided by the American Legion Post 8, Denison, was in the Oakland Cemetery in Denison. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Walter Otto Ernst (1901 - 1995)
Walter Otto Ernst was born December 29, 1901, the son of Henry and Minnie Zabel Ernst. He died at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison on Saturday, July 29, 1995 at the age of 93.Walter was born on the family farm in Grant Township north west of Schleswig where he grew up. He received his education in the Trinity Lutheran parochial school near his home. He was baptized in Christ at Trinity Lutheran Church and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith on April 18, 1916. After completing his education, Walter remained on the farm helping his parents.
He was united in marriage to Roma Kastner at the Trinity Lutheran Church on June 27, 1928. The couple settled on the family farm and were members of Trinity Lutheran Church until it was destroyed by a tornado. The couple then transferred their church membership to the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig.
In 1965, they retired but continued to live on the farm until 1976 when they moved to Schleswig. Walter was a kind and loving husband who enjoyed entertaining Roma at the piano. Additionally, he enjoyed bowling, especially tournaments, and even appeared on television three times; socializing with his friends at bingo games and golfing, after retiring from farming. In 1988, Roma died and in 1989, Walter moved to the Eventide Nursing Home in Denison.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Roma; three sisters, Hulda Rehse, Hertha Else and Florence Rabe; and two brothers, Albert and Theodore.
Survivors include one brother, Ray C. Ernst and his wife, Bobbie of Ida Grove, Iowa, one sister-in-law, Erna Kastner of Kiron; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, August 1, 1995 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa with Rev. Donald Wagner officiating the service and grave side rites held at the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Grant Township, Ida Grove, Iowa. Sharon Thompson provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Roger Water singing "How Great Thou Art" and congregational hymns "I'm But a Stranger Here" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus". Pallbearers were: Lodean Kastner, Lonnie Kastner, Duane Ernst, Larry Maack, Jerry Ernst, Merlin Rabe and Ray H. Ernst. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them for lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of arrangements.

Walter F. Frese (1906 - 1987)
Note: Only year of newspaper article publication written on clipping.Denison native and professor emeritus of Harvard Business School Walter F. Frese died late last year at the age of 81. He had been a resident of Belmont, Mass. for several years.
He was born May 21, 1906 in Denison, the oldest of five children. His father served as pastor to the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison for 37 years. He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1928 then completed his master's degree in accounting at the University of Illinois.
He spent the next five years teaching accounting at the University of Illinois and developing his own public accounting practice in the community. He later served in key positions in the U.S. Treasury Department and General Accounting Office in Washington, D.C. and was a former president of the Association of Government Accountants. While at the Treasury Department he helped establish a nationwide system to account for and disburse emergency relief funds.
From 1947-1956 he headed the Joint Accounting Improvement Program, which produced sweeping reform of federal financial procedures. At the time he was chief of the General Accounting Office's accounting systems division.
In 1956, Frese became a visiting professor at the Harvard Business School. In 1968, he was named the first Lovett-Learned Professor of Business Administration. Two years later he became the first Arthur Lowes Dickenson Professor of Accounting, occupying the school's first endowed chair in accounting.
While teaching at the school, he served as a member of the Accounting Principles Board, the profession's leading authority on accounting practices. He also acted as consultant to the government and private concerns.
In 1983, he won the Harvard Business School's Distinguished Service Awards and in 1974 the government General Accounting Officer Award for Public Service. He was a longtime member of the the American Accounting Association.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred; a son, Wayne Frese of Belmont; two daughters, Mary Ann Witt of Durham, N.C., and Martha Mills of Herndon, Va.; five grandchildren; one brother, Carl; and three sisters, Alma and Ruth of Illinois and Helen of Dallas. Texas.

Walter H. Hinrichsen (1908 - 1983)
Walter H. Hinrichsen, 74, of Timnath, Colo., died at Purdue Valley Hospital, July 8 (1983), after a long illness.Mr. Hinrichsen was born Dec. 2, 1908, in Plymouth County, Iowa, son of Herman and Minnie (Hagge) Hinrichsen. He received his education in the Charter Oak schools, graduating with the class of 1927.
He married Laurena B. Bockelmann, Oct, 6, 1935. They farmed in the Charter Oak area until 1947, when they moved to Timnath, Colo. For 18 years, Walter was maintenance man for Purdue Valley Hospital in Ft. Collins, Colo. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and one sister.
Funeral services were held July 12 at 10:00 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, Ft. Collins, Colo, with Rev. Ronald P. Nickel officiating.
He is survived by his wife; two sons, Alan of Concord, Calif, and Jon of Denver, Colo.; three daughters, Anita Gudmundson, Lakewood, Colo.; Beth Hinrichsen of Mt. View, Calif.; Mary Olson of Timnath, Colo.; one brother, Leslie, of Schleswig; two sisters, Mrs. Rose Schultz and Mrs. Leslie Baak, both of Charter Oak; and two grandchildren.
Interment in Roselawn Cemetery, Fort Collins, Colo. Pallbearers were Murlyn Aronson, Arlyn Baak, William Bockelmann, LaWayne Hinrichsen, Dennis Houska, and Ferdinand Kiepe.

Walter Henry Meyer (1904 - 1982)
Walter Henry Meyer was born on July 11, 1904 in Crawford County, Iowa, the son of Henry and Minnie Benningsdorf Meyer. He died Jan. 17, 1982 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, at the age of 77.Walter was reared on a family farm in East Boyer Township. He received his early education in the rural schools near his home. He was baptized as an infant and later during the years of his education at Zion Lutheran School, was confirmed in the Lutheran faith.
On Feb. 5, 1925, Walter was united in marriage to Hertha Mundt in Denison. Together they made their home on a farm near Denison. Walter was a life long member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and served as a school Director in East Boyer Township.
In addition to his parents, Walter was preceded in death by two brothers, Louie and William and one sister Ida Hamann.
Survivors include his wife Hertha of Denison, one son Robert of Denison, two daughters Gladys, Mrs. Fred Hulsebus of Fort Collins, Colo, and Shirley, Mrs. Leonard Ahrenholtz of Denison. Also surviving are seven grandchildren and one sister, Meta, Mrs. Barney Loewe of Denison.
Funeral services were held Jan. 20 at 10:30 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Burial was in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens. The Rev. Jack Heck, pastor of Zion Lutheran Church officiated at the services. Pallbearers were grandsons, Bill Hulsebus, Steven Hulsebus, John Merriam, Scott Meyer, Tim Ahrenholtz and Ted Ahrenholtz. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Funeral services were held for Walter Kropf, 76 of Carnarvon, Monday December 19th, at 2:00 p.m. at the Emmanual Presbyterian Church in Carnarvon, (Sac Co., Ia.) Reverend Donald Gibson officiating.Music selections were by Mrs. Ted Bruns and Charmine Bruns, organist was Mrs. Dennis Mein. Pallbearers were George Cowlham, Edward Kropf, Eugene Boeckmann, Albert Ohden, Lyle Kropf and Robert Rodman. Burial was in the Deloit Cemetery under the direction of the Farber Otterman Funeral Home of Lake View.
Surviving are a daughter Mrs. Raymond C. (Donna) Friedrichsen, Denison, two sons Lonnie Kropf of Breda, and Capt. Dennis Kropf of Savannah, Ga. Eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren, also a Sister, Mrs. Delia Bartels of Redding, Calif. Besides his wife Edna and a daughter Betty, he was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers and six sisters.
Mr. Kropf died Dec. 16, (1976) 1 year and 4 days after his wife, Edna. He and his wife had been making their home with their daughter, Donna and husband in Denison since August 1976 when they both first became ill.

Walter M. Kruthoff (1905 - 1991)
Walter M. Kruthoff was born the son of William and Christine Alter Kruthoff, May 13, 1905. He died May 20, 1991 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa at the age of 86 years and 8 days.Walter was born on the farm where he grew up and attended a rural school near his home. He was baptized at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, on Aug. 26, 1905 and confirmed there on March 28, 1920.
On Dec. 4, 1929, Walter was united in marriage to Marie Hoist at the Zion Lutheran Parsonage in Denison by the Rev. Wm. Frese. The couple made their home in Denison Township and were blessed with the birth of two children. Together, they shared sixty-one years of marriage.
The couple farmed in Denison Township before moving to a farm in Paradise Township and then to a farm in Hanover Township where they remained until retirement in 1977 when they moved to Denison.
Walter dedicated his life to his Lord. He was a kind, compassionate and loving husband and devoted father who cared for his family with a sincere love and was willing to help anytime he was needed. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, and served as Vice President of the church congregation.
He was a member of the voters assembly of the congregation, and a past member to the Men's Club. Other responsibilities in the church included his service to the Sunday School for 24 years. He was a member of the Farm Bureau for 55 years and enjoyed wood working in his spare time.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, John, Conrad and Raymond.
Survivors include his wife, Marie and two sons, Dale Kruthoff and his wife, Irene of Arion, and David Kruthoff and his wife, Georgia of Bay City, Texas; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Elizabeth Lueck of Denison, and Anna Dethmann and her husband, Wernes, also of Denison.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 23, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, with Pastors Kurt Kaiser and Philip E. Bloch officiating the service and the grave side rites held in the Garden of Gethsemane at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for Suzi Swarthout's solos of "How Great Thou Art" and "My Faith Looks Up to Thee" with the congregation singing "I Know That My Redeemer Lives."
Pallbearers were Donald Hoist, John Kruthoff, Carl Kruthoff, Mark Kruthoff, Matthew Kruthoff and Kenneth Lueck. Walter A. Huebner Sons' Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Walter P. Maack (1905 - 1982)
Walter P. Maack was born on a farm in Hanover Township, Crawford County Iowa, July 31, 1905, the son of John and Mary Dorale Maack. He was raised on the family farm and received his education at the local rural schools near his home. After his schooling, he farmed with his parents until 1937, when he started his lifetime career of farming on his own, on a farm south of Denison.On January 8, 1941, Walter was united in marriage with Louise Grorth at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. They made their home on a farm near Kiron, and to this union one daughter, Mary Lou, was born. They later moved to a farm south of Denison and before retiring in 1973 and moving to Denison, they farmed in the Buck Grove area. They spent all of their retirement years in Denison.
Walter entered the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Tuesday October 26, 1982, and it was there his death occurred early Wednesday, October 27, 1982. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 77 years, 2 months and 26 days. He was a member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, John, Ernest, and Edward Maack, and one sister, Frieda Maack.
He is survived by his wife Louise of Denison, one daughter, Mary Lou Maack at home, one brother, George Maack ci Denison, and two sisters, Ella, Mrs. Emil Meggers of Denison, and Meta Jepsen of Manson, Iowa. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 29, 1982, at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig with the Rev. Fred Moore officiating. Comfort in music was provided by Rubie Kastner as soloist and Evelyn Johnson as organist. Casket bearers included: Earl Groth Tom Groth, Ron Rasmussen, Charles Maack, Robert Jepsen and Wayne Jepsen. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery at Schleswig.

Wilbert J. Lapel (1907 - 1996)
Wilbert J. Lapel was born April 14, 1907, the son of Edward and Dora Rohde Lapel. He died at the Denison Care Center in Denison, Iowa on Friday, May 10, 1996 at the age of eighty-nine.Wilbert was born on a farm near Manilla in Nishnabotna Township, Crawford County, Iowa. He received his education at a rural school near his home and helped his family farm until age twenty-one, when he became employed for Neucome Garage in Denison, Iowa. He worked for Karl Gualding many years at the Ford dealership, and later became a partner, before starting his own business at the Lapel Service Garage in Denison. He retired in 1969. He was also employed part time for Bill Jahnke and Glen Vetter.
On February 25, 1967, Wilbert was united in marriage to LaDonna Luetjens at the First Lutheran Church in Omaha, Nebraska. The couple made their home in Denison.
Wilbert was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, the Denison Fire Department and the Wally Byam Caravan Club International. He was a person who loved his family and loved to travel to Texas in their trailer for the winter. In his leisure time he enjoyed fishing and working on cars.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Josephine on November 10, 1965 and one brother, Albert Lapel.
Survivors include his wife, LaDonna of Denison; one daughter, Carol Lapel of Lincoln, Nebraska and one brother, Ray Lapel and his wife, Hazel of Vail.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Monday, May 13, 1996 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Pastor Kurt Kaiser and Vicar Andrew Carlson officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "Nearer, My God, to Thee", "Abide with Me! Fast Falls the Eventide" and "I Know that My Redeemer Lives". Honorary Pallbearers were: John J. Brockelsby and Bud Barnes. Pallbearers were: Leonard Ahrenholtz, Garry Chapman, Duane Neppl, Craig Whited, Bud Isaacs and Larry Boeck. Wilbert J. Johannsen (1904 - 1983)
Wilbert J. Johannsen, son of Peter W. and Mathilda Jochims Johannsen, was born on June 19, 1904, in Soldier Township, Crawford County, Iowa. He died on Tuesday, February 15, 1983, at Iowa Lutheran Hospital, Des Moines, Iowa at the age of 78.Wilbert was baptized as an infant on August 31, 1906, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, Iowa. He was later confirmed on June 1, 1919, in the Evangelical Church of Schleswig, Iowa. Wilbert was educated in the rural schools in Soldier Township and later attended Schleswig High School.
One January 12, 1926, Wilbert was united in marriage to Irene N. Krohnke. To this union three children were born.
Wilbert farmed for more than thirty years of his working career, twenty-nine of those years were on a farm east of Schleswig. After his retirement, he moved into Schleswig, On January 12, 1981, he and his wife Irene observed their 55th wedding anniversary.
Wilbert served on the Crawford County Rural Electric Association for nine years and for ten years on the Otter Creek Township School Board. He also served on his church board.
He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include, his wife Irene of Schleswig, one daughter, Shirley Kellogg of Cedar Rapids, two sons, Roger Johannsen of Denison and Dr. Kenneth Johannsen of Storm Lake, ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Lillian Ehler of Ida Grove, and Mrs. Adela Jensen of Schleswig.
Funeral services were held on Friday, February 18, 1983, at 2:00 p.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. The Rev. Paul Wiegert officiated at the services. Hymns for the service included "Rock of Ages", "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and "My Faith Looks Up to Thee". Pallbearers were LeRoy Schagt, Cyrenus Petersen, LaVerne Jochims, William Petersen, Bud Ehler and Lyle Grell. Grandsons serving as honorary pallbearers were Jess Johannsen, Jay Johannsen, Keith Johannsen, Dr. Mark Johannsen, Lee Johannsen, Seth Johannsen and Russ Johannsen.

Wilbur Schwieso (1904 - 1982)
Wilbur, son of William and Melanie Schoening Schwieso, was born June 27, 1904, in Crawford County, Iowa. He attended rural schools near his home.On Feb. 7, 1934, he was united in marriage with Lena Christensen at the Lutheran Parsonage in Irwin. They farmed until 1951 when they moved into Manilla. Then Wilbur worked as a carpenter and in gas stations until his retirement in 1966. Wilbur was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Manilla.
Wilbur had been in failing health for about 1 1/2 years and. died at Clarkson Hospital, Omaha, Neb., on Nov. 22, 1982, at the age of 78 years, 4 months, and 25 days.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one grandchild, Jeffery Schwieso, two brothers, and three sisters.
He is survived by his wife, Lena, Manilla; five children Roger Schwieso, Harlan, Janice Morman, Yankton, S.D., Gary Schwieso, Carroll, Dennis Schwieso, Des Moines and Kathy Nightingale, Omaha, neb.; nine grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; three brothers: Sylvester Schwieso, Tucson, Ariz., Harold Schwieso, Manilla, Eddie Schwieso, Irwin; two sisters: Mrs. Chris Christensen, Manilla, Mrs. Hattie Steckelberg, Harlan; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Nov. 24 at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, Manilla, with Pastor Glenn Wiechmatfn officiating. Milton Barry was soloist, Ruth Ann Barry, pianist and Bonnie Lorenzen, organist. Pallbearers were Lester Hass, Keith Schwieso, Ronald Christensen, Larry Justice, Alan Jensen and Ray Jorgensen. Interment was in Nishnabotna Cemetery, Manilla.

Wilhelm Wollenhaupt (1905 - 2000)
Wilhelm "Bill" Wollenhaupt was born December 9, 1905, in Bittermark Kreis (County) Dortmund Horde, Germany and died on August 19, 2000 at home. He was 94 years and 8 months old.Bill was the son of Heinrich Friederich and Emma (Karthaus) Wollenhaupt. He was baptized, confirmed and educated in Germany. Bill came to the United States in 1929 at the age of 24. Upon reaching New York, he was put on a train to Omaha, Nebraska. He was met there and was brought to Treynor, Iowa where he worked on various farms until 1934. At that time Bill took employment in a butcher shop in Elk Horn, Nebraska which proved to be the beginning of his business career.
In 1936 Bill established Bill's Market in Schleswig, Iowa. Bill was known by many as "Bill the Butcher". He was a butcher, sausage maker and grocer. He was the originator of Schleswig Sausage. He once received a note of appreciation from President Eisenhower for some pit-cooked barbecued beef that Bill had provided as the president was campaigning through Denison by train.
Minnie and Bill ran the grocery store, meat market and locker plant together until 1965 when Bill was seriously injured in an auto accident. Minnie continued, to manage the business until they retired in 1967.
Bill led a full and varied life. He was a member of the United Church of Christ, Schleswig Business Club, a 32-Degree Mason and a Shriner. He was an excellent bowler and loved to golf, garden and travel. He also was an avid rockhound, coin collector, and wine maker. Bill loved to play cards. Perhaps you remember seeing him at the Golf Course Club House playing Euchre, up town playing with the old boys, or playing poker at family gatherings.
Bill married Minnie Geise on May 24, 1936. They were blessed with two daughters. Bill is survived by his two daughters, and four grandchildren.
Daughters: Marie Reineck with husband Bob; and Linda DuShane. Grandchildren: Bob Reineck with wife Lynne and children Dustin and Amber; Scott Noll; Christie Buckrop with husband Bradley and daughter Melinda; and John Reineck with wife Anne and daughters Becky and Tessa. His brother Henry and sisters, Bernardina and Hildegard also survive Bill.
Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife, Minnie, two brothers, and one grandson.
Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 23, 2000 at the United Church of Christ, Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Susan Babovec officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery, Schleswig. Dorothy Jessen provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Rubie Kastner singing "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Nearer, My God, to Thee" and congregational hymn "How Great Thou Art". Those serving as pallbearers were: Kurt Wollenhaupt, Bradley Buckrop, Dennis Bumann, John Reineck, Richard Geise, Carrol Olsen, Bob Reineck, Scott Noll and Fred Geise. A Masonic Service was held at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, August 22, 2000 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Women's Guild. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

William C. Evers (1902 - 1993)
William C. Evers was born on a farm in Goodrich Township, Crawford County, Iowa, October 16, 1902, the son of William F. and Joachine Rahn Evers. He was received into God's Kingdom of Grace through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism May 22, 1903 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and confirmed in his Christian faith there April 1, 1917. William was raised on the family farm and received his education in the rural and Zion Lutheran Schools.On July 19, 1927, William was united in marriage with Sophia L. Thomsen at Zion Lutheran church in Denison. Their union was blessed with four daughters, Shirley, Clarion, Evelyn and Marilyn. They made their home on the farm in Goodrich Township until retiring in 1967 and moving to Denison.
Sophia died January 27, 1983 and William continued to reside at their home in Denison. Since April 2 of this year he had resided at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison where his death occurred Thursday afternoon, December 23, 1993. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 91 years, 2 months, and 7 days. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.
Including his parents and wife, William was preceded in death by one sister, Rose Denker.
Those who remain to cherish his memory include his four daughters and spouses, Shirley and Virgil Winquist of Schleswig, Clarion and Melvin Holdsworth of Manilla, Evelyn and Robert Rank of Clarinda and Marilyn Evers of LaJolla, California, eight grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and one brother, Edward Evers of Denison. Also surviving are nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, December 27, 1993 at Zion Lutheran Church with the Reverend Philip E. Bloch officiating. Soloist for the service was Henry Henningsen singing "How Great Thou Art" with Karen Kahl serving as organist. Congregational hymns included "Rock of Ages" and "What A Friend We Have In Jesus". Casket bearers were Randall Holdsworth, Stanley Winquist, Sydney Winquist, William Bump, Doyle Slavik, David Wiener and Bahram Sadeghi. Interment was in the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

William Ehlers (1902 - 1995)
William, son of John and Josephine Karuel Ehlers, was born March 3, 1902 in Nishnabotna Township, Crawford County, Iowa. He attended rural schools, and Manilla schools after the family moved there.On June 1, 1927 Bill was united in marriage with Nellie Poleske at Red Oak, Iowa. One son, Glenn, was born to this union. They farmed for eight years in Shelby County; in 1935 they moved to a farm five miles south of Denison. Bill's wife, Nellie, died in 1991.
Bill had been in failing health this summer and was hospitalized for brief periods of time. He entered Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison nine days before his death there on Tuesday evening, December 26, 1995 at the age of 93 years, 9 months, and 23 days.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Lillie Olson and Ida Lahndorf.
Bill is survived by his son, Glenn, of rural Denison; a brother, Herman Ehlers and his wife Sylvia, of Des Moines; a sister, Marie Terwilleger, of Manilla; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A lifelong member of the Lutheran Church, Bill was baptized in 1902 and confirmed in 1918 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla.
Funeral services were held Friday, December 29, 1995 at 2:00 p.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla. Iowa. Officiating the service was Pastor Timothy Geitz. Music was provided by Marlene Jahn and Carol Ann Segebart singing "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and "Beautiful Savior" and congregation singing "Come, Your Hearts and Voices Raising" and "Thou Light of Gentile Nations" with Marian Joens serving as organist. Interment was in the Nishnabotna Cemetery in Manilla, Iowa. Casketbearers were Herschel Gabrielson, Robert H. Meyer, Leonard Ahrenholtz, Art Joens, Harold Olson, Sr., and Garnet Sievertsen. Honorary casketbearers John Brus, Jerry Brus, Sr., James F. Leinen, and Ivan Genzen. Prayer service was held on Thursday, December 28, 1995 at the Ohde Funeral Home in Manilla, Iowa.

William Edward Otto Schultz (1908 - 1993)
William Edward Otto Schultz was born August 7, 1908, the son of Carl and Anna Nemitz Schultz. He died on December 21, 1993 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa at the age of eight-five years.William was born on a farm in Hanover Township and received his education in St. Paul's Lutheran School in Hanover Township. He was baptized as an infant and later confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
After completing his education, William worked on various farms in the Ricketts and Schleswig area until he was united in marriage to Olinda Kutschinski on February 7, 1932, at the St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak by Rev. Amstein. The couple made their home on various farms in the Ricketts, Battle Creek, Schleswig and Charter Oak areas and were blessed with the birth of two children.
In September of 1979, they retired from farming and moved to Charter Oak, Iowa where they remained until moving to Eventide Lutheran Home in September of 1993.
While living in Charter Oak, the Bill enjoyed caring for his yard and garden, and always enjoyed visiting with friends during his frequent walks and enjoyed visiting the farm. In February of this year, the couple celebrated their sixty-first wedding anniversary.
Bill was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak and was a voting member of the church. He served in the Lutheran Layman's League and served in several offices in the league.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers: Ben, Paul, and Edgar; and one sister, Minnie Huebner.
Survivors include his wife, Olinda of Eventide; one son Earl and his wife, Joleen of Charter Oak and one daughter Marlene Groth and her husband Milroy of Denison. Also one granddaughter, Kim Plough and her husband, Rory of Charter Oak; and two grandsons, Kreg Schultz and his wife, Julie of LeMars, Iowa and Kyle Schultz and his wife Teresa of Charter Oak; and one great-grandson, Travis Plough at home in Charter Oak; and three sisters, Viola Dorale of Charter Oak; Erna Kastner of Kiron and Helen McKee and her husband, Dennis of Denison.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., Friday, December 24, 1993 at the St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, Iowa with Rev. L.C. Gebhardt and Vicar Tim Kersten officiating the service and grave side rites held at the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery in Charter Oak. Angela Gebhardt provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "Asleep in Jesus" and What a Friend We Have in Jesus". Honorary Pallbearers were: Norman Christiansen, Rudolph Meseck, Edgar Glockzien, Herb Kuhlmann, Paul Kuhlmann, Vernon Hollrah, Murlyn Aronson, Louis Clausen, Norman Kiepe, LaVerne Strait, Stan Deiber and Bob Kroll. Pallbearers were: Don Friedrichs, Delbert Lafrentz, LeRoy Nemitz, Larry Kastner, Les Schultz and Bruce Lee. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them for lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak was in charge arrangements.

William H. Borgstahl (1908 - 1996)
William H. Borgstahl was born at Fremont, Nebraska, April 21, 1908, the eldest child of John and Agnes Neumann Borgstahl. He was received into God's Kingdom of Grace through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism May 3, 1908 at Fremont, Nebraska and confirmed in his Christian Faith June 14, 1922 at Webster, Minnesota.At nine years of age he moved with his parents and siblings to Webster, Minnesota. As a young adult he and the family moved to Denison, Iowa where he attended school through the eighth grade.
Following his education he worked as a farm hand for Earl Wulf and played Sunday baseball until 1937 when he was united in marriage with Rosa Mae Crane. He and brother Roland played the accordion and banjo for her country school dances.
To this union was born a daughter, Janice and son, Ronald. They resided on farms west of Denison and north of Deloit until Bill retired at age 73 in 1982.
Through the years he was involved with Farm Bureau, 4-H, Zion's Church Choir and Men's Club, and in his spare time enjoyed woodworking, watching baseball and playing the organ. Their grandchildren, Cindy, Andy, Leigh, Susan, Juli and Kaye all have fond memories of summers spent with grandma and grandpa on the farm.
Rose preceded him in death in 1983 and William continued to reside on the farm until 1985.
Bill's life was twice blessed when he married Loretta Weiss in 1985. They made their home in Charter Oak where he had since resided. Exceedingly good health was his until 1994 when renal failure resulted in dialysis. Never one to complain he made the best of a difficult situation.
William died Sunday morning, September 15, 1996 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 88 years, 4 months and 25 days.
William was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Rose, three half brothers and one half sister.
Those who remain to cherish his memory include his wife, Loretta Borgstahl of Charter Oak, Iowa, daughter, Janice and husband, Eldon Geist of Lakewood, Colorado, son, Ronald Borgstahl and wife, Carol of Phoenix, Arizona, three stepchildren, Dr. Dennis Weiss and wife, Patti Jo of Omaha, Nebraska, Teresa and husband, Donald Mordhorst of Soldier, Iowa, and Connie and husband, Kenneth Kohler of Remsen, Iowa, six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, eleven step-grandchildren, nine step-great-grandchildren, three siblings, Roland Borgstahl of Shelton, Nebraska, Garnet and husband, Robert Arnold of Denison, Iowa, and Marcella and husband, Wilbert Jenkins of Storm Lake, Iowa, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, September 18,1996 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa with the Rev. Kurt R. Kaiser and the Rev. Daniel G. Gifford officiating. Music for the service was provided by Larry Boeck singing "How Great Thou Art" and the congregation singing "Amazing Grace" and "Abide With Me". Glenn Rankin served as organist. Casket bearers included Wilferd Schroeder, Edgar Glockzien, Walter Schmieder, Elmer Gierstorf, Emil Bielfeldt and Jim Beaman. Interment was in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison, Iowa. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

William Kahl (1906 - 1981)
William Kahl was born Sept. 25, 1906 in Crawford County, the son of John and Margaret Ploog Kahl. He died Dec. 18, 1981 at the Manilla Manor, Manilla, at the age of 75.Bill spent his early years on a family farm near Schleswig. He received his formal education in the rural schools near his home. After the completion of his education he farmed with his family for a number of years.
Later, Bill purchased a farm near Schleswig with his sister. They made their home on the farm for a number of years before moving to Denison. After his sister died, Bill continued to make his home in Denison. During the later years of his retirement he lived near Arion.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, one sister and his parents.
Survivors include a number of nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends, including Beulah Schaller and Ann Davis, both of Omaha.
Funeral services were Dec. 21 at 11 a.m. at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. The Rev. Scott Woodworth of the United Methodist Church in Denison officiated at the services. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

William Mathemeier (1906 - 1972)
William Mathemeier, 66, former Denison resident, died on Wednesday, September 21, 1972, at his home in Fremont, Nebraska He was a former manager of the Gambles Store in Denison.Mr. Mathemeier was born September 18, 1906, in Germany and came to the United States with his parents as a small child. He was raised in Webster, South Dakota. On June 20, 1937, he was married to Thekla Vogel in Clarinda, Iowa.
He is survived by his wife, by his children Paul and Mrs. Pauline Ostermeyer, two grandchildren, and two sisters, Mrs. Irene Mack and Mrs. Herta Ninda.
Burial was September 30, 1972, in Memorial Cemetery at Fremont.

Zuehla Anna Catherine (Michaelsen) Hamilton (1900 - 1987)
Zuehla Anna Catherine Hamilton was born on September 24, 1900, at Schleswig, Iowa, the daughter of Thomas Michaelsen and Marie Sievers Michaelsen. She died on May 13, 1987, at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa, at the age of 86 years.At the age of three, she moved with her family to Wheatland, Oklahoma, they returned to Iowa in 1906. She received her education in rural schools in Crawford County, Iowa. She was confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Schleswig in 1917. She was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Dow City at the time of her death.
In February of 1919, Zuehla was united in marriage to Edmund Kloepper of Baldwin, Illinois, in Denison, Iowa. To this union two daughters were born. They farmed in Paradise Township for four years. They moved to Denison and later to Dow City. In 1937, Zuehla again moved to Denison and in 1938 to LeMars, Iowa, where she worked in the overall factory. She also did practical nursing in homes during her adult life.
Zuehla married Clarence Hamilton Sr. in 1948. They made their home in several Iowa towns moving to Tacoma, Washington, in 1950. They returned to Iowa in 1952. Zuehla entered Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison in 1981 where she resided until her death.
In addition to her parents, Zuehla was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Hamilton in 1961; her daughter, Marcella, Mrs. Cecil Phillips on April 7, 1979; one infant sister, Garnet; seven brothers, Erhardt Michaelsen, Herbert Michaelsen, Robert Michaelsen, Alwin Michaelsen, Victor Michaelsen, Walter Michaelsen and Paul Michaelsen.
Survivors include her daughter, Phyllis and her husband, Harley Rollinger of East Moline, Illinois; brother, Leonard Michaelsen of Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison; two sisters, Hortense Pautsch of Arion and Delores and her husband, Ralph Jochimsen of Fort Dodge; one son-in-law, Cecil Phillips of Soldier; one sister-in-law Kathryn Michaelsen of Kansas City, Missouri; one step son, Clarence Hamilton of Denison; four grandchildren, Linda Holverson of Soldier, Cindy Weed of Ute, Carol Rollinger of New York City and Rebecca Ohsann of Davenport; seven great-grandchildren and a number of step grand and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 16, 1987, at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Dow City, with burial in the Morgan Township Cemetery.

Louie Johannsen (1879 - 1964)
Louie Johannsen, son of Detlef and Dorothea nee Petersen, was born March 27, 1879 in Hanover township, Crawford County, Iowa, where he grew to manhood. Around 1905 he moved to a farm in Paradise township at which area he resided for the remainder of his life. In 1908 he married Anna Ladwig who preceded him in death in 1958.He enjoyed excellent health until February, 1964 when he suffered a stroke. He recovered but suffered two more strokes while visiting his daughter, Inez, at Hot Springs, Ark. and was hospitalized there several weeks. After his recovery he returned to Denison and spent a month at the Eventide Rest Home. On July 1, he returned to his home in Paradise township, where he died July 22 at the age of 85.
Surviving are his four children, Arnold of Denison; Eleanor Grill of Denison; Leonard of Omaha and Inez of Hot Springs, Ark; six grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Lizzie LaFrenz, Mrs. Anna Jepsen and Mrs. Rose Jensen, all of Denison. His wife, three brothers, one sister and one grandchild preceded him in death.
He was a member of the Zion Lutheran church, the 70 Year club and a charter member of the Farm Bureau. He was also a pioneer in organizing soil conservation practices in Paradise township.
Memorial services were held at the Zion Lutheran church at Denison, July 24 at 2 p. m. with Rev. C. W. Schmidt officiating. Music was by the Lutheran Ladies choir and organist, Fred Greinke. Interment was at Crawford Heights Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were Frank Lenz, Alvin Woebke, Gilbert Ziemen, Andrew Grainger, Clarence Denker and Loren Langholz.

Louise Henrietta (Christiansen) Evers (1895 - 1986)
Louise Henrietta Evers was born on a farm in Paradise Township, Crawford County, Iowa, March 11, 1895, the daughter of Samuel and Anna Jensen Christiansen. She was raised on the family farm and received her education in the local rural schools.On February 10, 1915, Louise was united in marriage with Otto Evers at Denison, Iowa. To this union three children were born, Raymond, Vera and Irene. The Evers made their home on a farm west of Denison where they farmed and raised their family. In November of 1950, they retired and moved to Denison.
Otto died January 25, 1965, and Louise continued to reside in Denison until October of 1978, when she moved to Maurice, Iowa, and made her home with her daughter, Irene.
Louise died Tuesday evening, September 16, 1986, at the Orange City Municipal Hospital in Orange City, Iowa. At the time of her death, she had attained the age of 91 years, 6 months and 5 days. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.
Including her husband and her parents, Louise was preceded in death by one daughter, Vera Elias, who died March 4, 1959, one son, Raymond Evers, who died June 20, 1985, five brothers and three sisters.
She is survived by one daughter, Irene Cose of Maurice, Iowa, one daughter-in-law, DeLoris Evers of Dakota City, Nebraska, seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, September 20, 1986, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa, with the Rev. Kurt R. Kaiser officiating. Music for the service was provided by Mr. Henry Henningsen singing, "Rock of Ages" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus", with Mrs. Fred Rabe serving as organist. Louise (Backhaus) Johannsen (1884 - 1969)
Funeral services for Mrs. John Johannsen, 84, were held on Saturday, May 9 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig with Rev. R. J. Ratzlaff officiating. Mrs. John Evers was organist for the service. Mrs. Ernie Grell and Mrs. Evelyn Martens sang the hymns "In The Garden" and "Just As I Am".Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery with the Sinn Funeral Home of Schleswig in charge. Pallbearers were Otto Backhaus, Robert Wiebers, Burdell Jensen, Henry Backhaus, Theo. Hollander and Wilbert Johannsen.
Mrs. Louise Johannsen was a daughter of Otto and Ann Liebler Backhaus. She was born November 18, 1884 in Morgan Township, and confirmed in Grant Township Church March 26, 1899.
She was united in marriage to John Johannsen on February 21, 1906. Two children were born to this union, Mrs. Powers (Ann) of Denison and Peter Johannsen of Schleswig. After their marriage they farmed in Soldier Township until 1923, they then retired and moved to Denison. In 1929 the couple moved to Schleswig and have since then been residents of this community.
After an illness of seven weeks she passed away at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison on Friday afternoon, May 7, 1969. She attained the age of 84 years, five months and nineteen days.
Survivors include her husband, John, daughter Ann Powers, son P. E. Johannsen, three grandchildren, four great grandchildren, three sisters, Marie Rusch of Mapleton, Dora Wiebers and Clare Jensen of Schleswig, and two brothers, Alfred Backhaus of Ida Grove and Dick Backhaus of Schleswig. She was preceded in death by her parents and six brothers.
She was a member of the United Church of Christ and a member of the Women's Guild of the Church. Mr. and Mrs. Johannsen had the honor of observing their 63rd Wedding Anniversary on February 21 of this year.

Louise Johanna (Else) Neubauer (1908 - 1983)
Louise Johanna Neubauer was born on January 8, 1908, in Grant Township, Ida County, Iowa, the daughter of Edward and Emma Johannsen Else. She died on Saturday afternoon, June 4, 1983, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa, at the age of 75.Louise was baptized as an infant and later in 1923 she was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grant Township. She was raised on a family farm. Louise attended the Lutheran School in Grant Township where she received her entire education.
On March 16, 1927, Louise was united in marriage to Herman J. Neubauer in Grant Township. Together they farmed in Ida and Crawford counties. In 1967, they retired and moved into Schleswig. Mr. Neubauer died in 1982.
Louise was a long time member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Grant Township. For many years she was a member of the Ladies Aid at Trinity. For the past number of years, she has been a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Louise was preceded in death by one grandson Ryan Baker and one sister LaVerne.
Survivors include one son Leon and his wife Millie of Ida Grove, one daughter, Jeanine and her husband Melvin Baker of Kiron, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Also surviving is one sister, Emma Jean, Mrs. Virgil Lundt of Cushing, Iowa, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, June 7, 1983, at 2:00 p.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. Burial was in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Grant Township near Schleswig, Iowa. The Rev. Paul Wiegert officiated at the services. Mrs. Leroy Hight served as organist with the church choir singing "Asleep in Jesus" and the congregation singing "I'm But a Stranger Here".

Louise O (Weifenbach) Ernst (1924 - 1986)
Mrs. Louise O. Ernst, 61, of Schleswig, Iowa, died Sunday, January 19, 1986, in a hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, after a short illness.Services were at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 22, 1986, in the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. The Reverend Richard Nelson officiated. Burial was in the Mount Hope Cemetery in Mapleton, Iowa. A prayer service was at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, January 21, 1986, in the Walter Funeral Home in Mapleton, Iowa.
Mrs. Ernst, the former Louise Weifenbach, was born to Chris and Olga (Rosenbocher) Weifenbach on August 16, 1924, in Ewing, Nebraska, and came with her parents to Mapleton, Iowa, when she was a young girl.
She married Wilbur Schlie October 30, 1943, in Ute, Iowa. He died in 1946. She married Steve Ernst August 14, 1948, in Onawa, Iowa. They lived in the Danbury and Mapleton communities from 1948 until 1963, when they moved to the Ricketts and Schleswig area. In 1975, they moved into Schleswig, Iowa. Mr. Ernst died December 12, 1975. She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, two daughters, one son, four brothers, and one sister.
Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Robert (Shirley) Jordon of Blair, Nebraska, Mrs. Tim (Betty) Daniel of Storm Lake, Iowa, Mrs. Marc (Linda) Hamann of Holstein, Iowa, and Mrs. Rick (Sally) Ruffalo of Sioux City, Iowa; three brothers, Henry of Mapleton, Iowa, Alfred of Little Sioux, and George of Gunnison, Colorado; three sisters, Mrs. Frieda Kurth of Mapleton, Iowa, Mrs. Anna Fick of Schleswig, Iowa, and Mrs. Alma Staatz of Great Falls, Montana; and five grandchildren. Pallbearers were Marvin Albertsen, Darren Woebke, Randy Goodman, Kevin Christie, Mark Knight, and Bert Dimig.

Louise Beatta (Lenz) Petersen (1886 - 1980)
Louise Beatta, daughter of Albert and Augusta Kroll Lenz, was born Aug. 20, 1886 in Crawford County, Iowa. She attended the rural schools near her home and also the Lutheran parochial school in Soldier Township.She was united in marriage with William H. Petersen on Feb. 23, 1914. They farmed near Buck Grove until moving to a farm west of Denison. They retired to Denison in 1950 where her husband died in 1952.
Louise continued to make her home in Denison until about eight years ago when she moved to Manilla. Due to failing health she entered the Manilla Manor about a month ago where she died Dec. 11 (1980) at the age of 93 years, 3 months and 21 days. Louise was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla.
Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents and 15 brothers and sisters.
She is survived by one son Raynen Petersen, Le Mars and by one daughter, Leora, Mrs. Lyle Gruhn, Manilla, also by five grandchildren, two great grandsons and by one sister Mrs. Ann Lafrentz, Eventide Home, Denison, as well as other relatives and friends.

Louis H. Bandow (1899 - 1969)
Louis H. Bandow, son of Albert and Frieda (Yaeger) Bandow, was born in East Boyer Township, Crawford County, on Feb. 19 1899. He was baptized in infancy and affiliated with the Zion Lutheran Church at Denison by the rite of Confirmation on March 28, 1915. He held membership in this church at the time of his death having been a member of the voting assembly of the congregation for many years.He was married to Milda Miller on August 17, 1922 and to this marriage six children were born. After their marriage they lived on farms in Crawford County with the exception of two years spent at Howard, Iowa. He passed away at his home on May 7 (1969) at the age of seventy years, two months and eighteen days.
His funeral service was held at Zion Lutheran Church on May 10 with the Rev. Carl W. Schmidt in charge of the service. Hymns were sung by the Lutheran Ladies Choir with Mrs. Fred Rabe serving as organist. Interment was made in the Nishnabotna cemetery in Manilla with the following serving as pallbearers: John Steckelberg, Carl Segebart, Charles Segebart, Lewis Bell, Robert Bell and Harvey Neumann.
Surviving are his widow; the following children: Melvin Bandow of Manilla; Mrs. Berdine Petersen of Ida Grove; Irwin Bandow of Estherville; Edwin Bandow of Manilla; Mrs. Virgine Ohl of Denison and Mrs. Georgine Dievertsen of Omaha, Nebr.; nineteen grandchildren and one brother Herbert Bandow of Manilla. Preceding him in death were two brothers: Carl and Irwin and one sister, Hertha Lapel.

John Jurgen Schmielau (1892 - 1961)
Manilla - Funeral services were held for John Schmielau at the Trinity Lutheran church May 23 at 2 p. m. with Rev. R. W. Natzke officiating. Mrs. Charles Manford, organist, accompanied the ladies' quartet. Burial was in Iowa Township cemetery.Pallbearers were Bernard Behrend, Harry Behrend, William Hahn, Stewart Blades, William Joens and Alvin Miller.
John Jurgen, son of Meevis and Ann Schmielau, was born Oct. 1, 1892 at Treynor and died at Memorial hospital in Denison May 20, 1961 at the age of 68 years, 7 months and 19 days. He moved with his parents to Hayes township and in 1912 they moved to Aspinwall. Mr. Schmielau worked on farms and in 1924 began work in a hotel in Moline, Ill. In 1933 his health failed and he moved to Manilla where he lived until his death.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Mrs. Kate Johnson, Mrs. Anne Ranniger and Frieda Woest. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Emma Ehman of Rock Island, Ill., and Mrs. Laura Read of Milwaukee, Wis., one brother, Otto, of Manilla, and one half-brother, Hugo, of Davenport, four nephews, six nieces and other relatives. Mark Huebner Funeral home in charge of services.

John Thomas Reimers (1918 - 1984)
John Thomas Reimers was born on May 13, 1918 near Schleswig, Iowa, the son of Gustav and Emma Rehemke Reimers. He died Dec. 4, 1984 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, at the age of 66.John was baptized as an infant and later during the years of his education he was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. He completed his education in the rural schools near his home.
John served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was united in marriage to Henrietta Preuss on Aug. 17, 1942 in Omaha, Nebr. After his release from the army, they made their home on a farm near Charter Oak. In 1980, John retired from farming, but continued to make his home on the farm near Charter Oak.
John was a longtime member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. He was also a member of the American Legion.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by one sister Hilda Schau.
Survivors include, his wife Henrietta of Charter Oak, one son Allen and his wife Heather of Kiron, one daughter Shirleen and her husband Fred Jepsen of Charter Oak, eight grandchildren and three sisters, Elsie Reimers and Anna Reimers both of Schleswig and Lucille, Mrs. Emil Ress of Manning.
Funeral services were held Dec. 7, at 10:30 A.M. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. The Rev. L.C. Gebhardt officiated at the services. Mrs. Paul Clausen served as organist with the congregation singing. Pallbearers were Vernet Soenksen, Art Soenksen, Wilbur Reimers, Gary Schau, LeRoy Mathews, and Delaine Blunk. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison.

Lucas William Kusch (1926 - 1967)
Funeral services for Lucas Kusch who died Sunday were held Tuesday morning at the Immanuel Lutheran church. Rev. F. A. Wiese, pastor read the following obituary:Lucas William, son of Ernst Kusch and Katharine Ullrich, was born Nov. 3, 1926 at Schleswig, Iowa. He graduated from the local High School. He worked for a while for the railroad, but most of his time as a trucker. He was baptized and confirmed in this congregation. He died on Sunday, July 30th (1967).
He was preceded in death by his father Ernst and one brother Fritz who died at the age of 2 1/2 years.
He is survived by his mother Katharina and the following brothers and sisters: Ernst of Omaha; Edna, wife of John Paris of Oceanside, Calif.; Esther, wife of Pastor James Hawley of Decatur, Ill.; Joan, wife of Don Schwartz of North Platte, Nebr.; and William of Schleswig. He attained to 40 years, 8 months, and 27 days.
The pallbearers were John Gosch, James Else, Roger Teut, Corvin Teut, Paul Mahoney and Delphin Bruhn. Burial was made in the Morgan cemetery.
