John Peter Jochimsen (1904 - 1997)

John Peter Jochimsen was born on a farm in Nishnabotna Township, west of Manilla, Iowa, July 9, 1904, the son of Henry and Emma Niemeier Jochimsen. He was received into God's Kingdom of Grace through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism November 9, 1904 at the Evangelical Lutheran Church south of Denison and later confirmed in his Christian Faith.

He was raised on the farm and received his education in the Nishnabotna Township Schools and the German School south of Denison. After his education he lived in and around Denison all of his life being employed doing odd jobs and as a farmhand for area farmers until his retirement. He spent his retirement years in Denison.

On February 17, 1994 John moved to Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison and it was there his death occurred Friday morning, June 27, 1997. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 92 years, 11 months and 18 days.

Including his parents, John was preceded in death by six brothers and sisters, Clause Jochimsen, Louis Jochimsen, Frieda Jones, Lillian Jochimsen and Herman and Ed Jochimsen.

Those who remain to cherish his memory include two sisters-in-law, Ida Jochimsen of Manning, Iowa and Esther Jochimsen of Eventide in Denison, Iowa, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 P.M., Monday, June 30, 1997 at the Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison with the Rev. Kurt R. Kaiser and the Rev. Daniel G. Gifford officiating. Music for the service was provided by Larry Boeck singing, "Just As I Am" and "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" and the congregation singing, "Amazing Grace". Karen Kahl served as organist. Casket bearers included Dan C. Pfannebecker, Anthony B. Hinners, Joseph Griffin and Robert Curnyn. Interment was in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

John Ruberg (1900 - 1977)

John Ruberg was born on May 16, 1900 at Deloit, the son of Johannes and Minnie Ruberg. He died on Tuesday, Nov. 1, 1977 at Crawford County Memorial Hospital at the age of 77. John was raised on the family farm in Goodrich Township, Crawford County, and received his formal education in the rural schools of the area. He was baptized and later confirmed into the Lutheran faith at Zion Lutheran Church, Denison.

On Febr. 23, 1921 he was united in marriage to Erna Popken at Denison. They made their home on the farm south of Denison for 24 years moving to Denison in 1945. While in Denison, John worked as a carpenter until his retirement in 1970.

John served as an elder, trustee and councilman at Zion Lutheran Church. He was also affiliated with the Farmers Mutual Insurance of Schleswig for a number of years.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one brother. Survivors include his wife Erna of Denison, one son Ray of Moville, and three daughters, Betty, Mrs. Joe Griffin of Denison, Jean, Mrs. Marvin Jensen of Audubon and Dorothy, Mrs. Keith Jensen of Irwin. Also by 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren and one sister Mrs. Lillian Walde of Denison.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Oct. 4, at 10:30 a. m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Denison. Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery. The Rev. Gary Hoffstetter officiated at the services. Pallbearers included grandsons Ron Ruberg, Bob Griffin, James Griffin, Mark Jensen, Ken Ruberg, Mitch Jensen and Jim Jensen. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

John Fredrick Segebart (1901 - 1998)

IDA GROVE, Iowa - John Fredrick Segebart, 96, of Ida Grove died Thursday, Feb. 1.2, 1998, at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove.

Services will be at 10:30 am. Monday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove with Rev. John Schauer officiating. Burial will follow in Ida Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Ida Grove and one hour prior to services Monday at the church.

Mr. Segebart was born Dec. 6, 1901, the son of John and Christine (Hinrichsen) Segebart, in Crawford County, Iowa.

He married Margaret Krayenhagen on Dec. 20, 1922, in Crawford County. The couple farmed in the Ida county area for many years. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove. He enjoyed working and animals.

Survivors include his children, Alvin and his wife, Darlene, of Battle Creek, Iowa, Helen Eriksen and her husband, Lyle of Holstein, Iowa, Ruth Johnson of Odebolt, Iowa, Lucille Dierenfield and her husband, Ralph, of Schleswig, Iowa, and Robert and his wife, Darlene, of Parker, Colo; 14 grandchildren; 30 , great-grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren; three half-brothers, Carl Mumm and his wife, Grace, of Portland, Ore., Jake Mumm and his wife, Thelma, of San Francisco, and Henry Mumm and his wife, Jean, of Portland, Ore.

He was preceded in death by his wife; two granddaughters, Sandra Hollemweguer and Julie Segebart; two brothers, Louis and Charles; a sister, Elizabeth Comstock; three half-sisters; and two half-brothers.

Julia (Krohnke) Knutson (1902 - 1997)

Julia Knutson was born January 1, 1902, the daughter of Adam and Annie Ernst Krohnke. She died Monday, February 24, 1997 at the Denison Care Center in Denison, Iowa at the age of ninety-five years, one month and twenty-three days.

Julia was born on a farm, near Charter Oak, Iowa and as a young girl moved with her family to Larchwood, Iowa, where she received her education. She was baptized in Christ June 8, 1902 at St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak, Iowa by Rev. Amstein and later confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig, Iowa.

September 21, 1929, Julia was united in marriage to Ferd Knutson in Sioux City, Iowa. The couple made their home near Inwood and Larchwood, Iowa where they farmed until 1933, when moving to Schleswig to farm. The couple continued farming, until retiring and moving to Schleswig in 1977. After Ferd's death in 1984, Julia continued to make her home in Schleswig until entering the Denison Care Center in May 1996.

Julia was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. She loved gardening and flowers and in her leisure time she enjoyed socializing in various neighborhood clubs and playing cards.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers, Art and Claudius, and two sisters, Anita and Wanita.

Survivors include a sister-in-law, Zana Krohnke of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; a special niece, Florence Jepsen and her husband, Arnold of Schleswig and other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., Thursday, February 27, 1997 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Merle Mahnken officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Roger Walter singing "Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound" and "Just as I Am, Without One Plea" and congregational hymn "I Know that My Redeemer Lives". Pallbearers were: Alfred Schoenfeld, Gaylen Bahnsen, Marlowe Schultz, John Bahnsen, Bradley Schultz and Jeff Krohnke. The family invited everyone .in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of arrangements.

Katherine (Krogh) Justice (1906 - 1988)

Katherine, daughter of T.J. and Metta Kristine Christiansen Krogh, was born June 6, 1906, at Astor, Ia. She attended the Astor country schools after which she remained at home to help her family.

On Feb. 6, 1932, Katherine was united in marriage with Kenneth Justice at Maryville, Mo. They farmed on the Justice home place near Manilla until moving into Manilla in 1962. After moving into Manilla they operated a feed store until Kenneth's health failed. Katherine's husband died suddenly on Jan. 15, 1973. Katherine was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and its guild and the Nishna Valley Club. She enjoyed crocheting and caring for her grandchildren.

Katherine had been in the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison for a short time before her unexpected death there on Tuesday, Nov. 29, 1988, at the age of 82 years, five months and 23 days.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Chris Krogh; and two sisters, Zena Jorgensen and Marie Nieman.

Katherine is survived by her daughter, Alta and husband, Merlin Nulle of Westside; her son, Larry Justice and his wife, Lillian of Manilla; by six grandchildren: Kevin Nulle and his wife, Kim of Ida Grove, Kent Nulle and his wife, Janet of Wall Lake, Kenneth Justice of Lewisville, Texas, Denise and her husband, Tim Ridgley of Grafenwoehr, Germany, Christina and her husband, Kevin Lingle of Manilla, and James Justice of Manilla; by eight great-grandchildren, a sister, Elsie Steckelberg of Manilla; a sister-in-law, Bernice Krogh of Everly; her mother-in-law, Alta Justice of the Manilla Manor; and by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Katherine W. (Brocksen ) Jensen (1901 - 1976)

Katherine W. Jensen, daughter of Gustav and Alma (nee Rahyder) Brocksen was born January 31, 1901, in Wesselburen, Germany and departed from this life August 11, 1976 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital. She reached the age of 75 years, 6 months, and 11 days.

She came to this country at the age of two years, with her parents, and settled in the Westside area, where she spent her childhood years. She completed eight grade of public school and attended sewing school.

She was baptized and confirmed in the United Church of Christ, Schleswig, on September 21, 1924 by Rev. Mauch and remained a faithful member of Christ's Church.

Katherine was married to Arnold H. Jensen of Schleswig, Iowa by Rev. Fraise on February 7, 1923. To this union five daughters were born. Arnold died February 10, 1952. She was well known in this community as a seamstress.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and two grandchildren: Shirley Neumann and Larry Baker; four brothers, three sisters, and one son-in-law.

Katherine is survived by her five daughters: Marian, Mrs. Lloyd Baker of Kiron; Sylvia, Mrs. Harry Streck of Ida Grove; Ramona, Mrs. Lea Nelson of Schleswig; Erma, Mrs. Marvin Neumann of Kiron; and Lois Anderson of Omaha, Nebraska, four sons-in-law, 18 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, two sisters: Mrs. Elizabeth Bohlander of Denison, and Malinda, Mrs. Edwin Stockfleth of Ute, Iowa; and one brother, William Brocksen of Portland, Oregon.

Her Memorial Service was held in the Schleswig United Church of Christ, August 14, 1976. The Committal Service was in Morgan Cemetery. Officiating was Pastor Fred Moore. Music was provided by Evelyn Johnson, Amy Meyer and Barbara Buffum. Hymns of praise were "How Great Thou Art", and "The Old Rugged Cross". Pallbearers were Steven Streck, Harry Streck Jr. , Jerry Baker, Dan Nelson, Kenneth Neuman and Dale Anderson.

Katie Emma (Henning) Hesse (1909 - 1999)

MAPLETON, Iowa - Katie Emma Hesse, 89, of Mapleton died Wednesday, April 21, 1999, at a Sioux City hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton, with the Rev. Daniel Torkelsen officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today, with the family present 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Mrs. Hesse was born July 31, 1909, in Charter Oak, Iowa, the daughter of Frank and Somphina (Schneider) Henning.

She married August "Jake" Hesse on Feb. 23, 1928, in Denison. He died Sept. 1, 1978. She was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Fred and Karla of Linclon, Neb.; three daughters, Marjorie and her husband, Keith Maxfield of Sioux City, Leila and her husband, Robert Reimer of Denison, Iowa, and Elvera Bennett of Olny, Md.; 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and two sisters, Marie and her husband, Orville Riessen of Charter Oak and Hildegarde Schrader of Denison.

Knud C. Friedrichsen (1901 - 1980)

Knud C. Friedrichsen was born on March 12, 1901 near Kiron, the son of Fred and Rosa Bieienberg Friedrichsen. He died on Monday morning, Dec. 22 (1980), at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital, Cherokee, at the age of 79.

Knud was raised on a farm near Kiron. He received his formal education in the rural school near his home. After the completion of his education he worked with his father for a time before marriage.

On February 18, 1925, Knud was united in marriage to Henrietta Jensen at Denison. They made their home on the Friedrichsen home place later moving to another farm near Kiron. Knud farmed all of his working career. After retiring to Kiron he continued to do farming by working for other farmers in the area.

In 1956, Knud moved to Cherokee due to ill health. He had been a resident of a Cherokee nursing home for many years. He had entered Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital only recently before his death.

Survivors include, his wife Henrietta of Denison, two sons, Clarence of Kiron, Glen of Granby Quebec Canada one daughter, Joyleen, Mrs. Dennis Swanson of Batavia, Illinois, seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Also by one brother Theodore of Arion, Iowa and one sister Wanda, Mrs. Arthur Spahn of Storm Lake, Iowa.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, December 24, at 10:30 A.M. at the Huebner Funeral Home, Denison. Burial was in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens at Denison. The Rev. Byron Surface of the United Methodist Church officiated at the services. Pallbearers included, Willard Friedrichsen, Hans Clausen, Neil Friedrichsen, Butch Jensen, Ross Friedrichsen and Virgil Schmidt. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison, Iowa.

Ladona Kropf (1902 - 1989)

Ladona Kropf, the daughter of Max H. and Agnes Grill Kropf, was born on Jan. 26, 1902, in Otter Creek Township, Crawford County, near Schleswig, Ia. She died on Tuesday, Aug. 29, 1989, at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison at the age of 87 years.

Ladona attended the rural Otter Creek Township School near their home until she moved with her parents to Denison in 1912. She graduated from the Denison Public School in 1920.

After her graduation, she was employed in the office of Balle Broderson Company for 17 and one half years, until they sold the business. From 1939 until the end of 1952, she was employed as a cashier in the Montgomery Ward Store. She worked as a bookkeeper for the Tenhulzen Hatchery and Feed Mill from 1953 until she retired in 1974.

After retirement, she enjoyed caring for her yard and flowers. She remained in her home until suffering a fall in 1985, and at that time, she entered Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, where she continued to make her home until her death. For many years, Ladona was affiliated with the United Methodist Church in Denison.

Ladona was preceded in death by her parents, Max H. and Agnes Grill Kropf; her sister and brother-in-law, Frances and Glenn Evans and two nephews.

Survivors include one aunt, Fanny Kropf of Denison; cousins and other relatives, friends and neighbors.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Thursday at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Dr. Edward Peterson officiated at the services with interment in the Oakland Cemetery at Denison. Mrs. Karen Kahl was organist and Henry Hen-ningsen, soloist. Selections were "Just As I Am" and "Beyond the Sunset." Honorary pallbearers were Sheldon Hendrix, Donald H. Jensen, Robert D. Ball, J.R. Robertqson, Dwight Jones, Gene Champion, Stanley Bukacek and Gilmer Anthony. Serving as pallbearers were Donald Cowlham, Robert Kropf, Lauren Miller, Darrell Schmidt, Henry Ewoldt, LaVerne Boyens, Dennis Goetsch and Everett Evers. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison.

LaMernie L. (Schelldorf) Giermann (1905 - 1997)

LaMernie L. Giermann was born October 29, 1905, the daughter of Herman and Emma Kropf Schelldorf. She died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Wednesday, December 24, 1997 at the age of ninety-two.

LaMernie was born on a farm in Stockholm Township, Crawford County, Iowa southeast of Boyer. She attended a rural schools near Westside, and Stockholm Township. After completing her education, LaMernie assisted families in various homes as needed.

January 12, 1927, LaMernie was united in marriage to Joseph Giermann at St. John's Lutheran Church in Stockholm Township. The couple made their home on the Giermann home farm and raised their family of two children. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Kiron and St. John's Ladies Aid.

In her leisure time, she enjoyed socializing with her family and friends at cards in addition to cooking and baking. She was a loving wife and mother who helped her husband care for the needs of her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Joseph in 1969, one brother, LeRoy Schelldorf one sister, Leona Quade, and one grandson, Lance Jay Schmadeke.

Survivors include: two daughters, Darlene Boyens and her husband, LaVerne and LaVonne Schmadeke and her husband, Raymond all of Kiron. Also, two grandchildren, Larry Boyens and his wife, Nancy of Kiron and Lonny Schmadeke and his wife, Susan of Kiron; four great-grandchildren: Staci and Joey Boyens; and Cory and Chad Schmadeke; and two sisters, Lois Jensen of Holstein, Iowa; LaJune Fineran of Denison; and one sister-in-law, Doris Sorensen of Rockwell City, Iowa.

Funeral services were held at 2 P.M., Saturday, December 27, 1997 at the St. John Lutheran Church, Kiron, Iowa. Rev. Hilmer Hafner and Rev. Larry Lemke officiated the service and grave side rites held at the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Kiron. Lois Gronau provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Jon Jensen singing "How Great Thou Art" and "Asleep in Jesus" and congregational hymn "I Know That My Redeemer Lives". Those serving as pallbearers were: Lonny Schmadeke, Larry Joe Boyens, Chad Schmadeke, Stacey Boyens, Cory Schmadeke and Joel Boyens. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Laura Elisa (Fritz) Lueck (1901 - 1976)

Laura Elisa Lueck, daughter of John and Bertha Reinert Fritz, was born Aug. 9, 1901, on a farm near Denison and died Thursday, Dec. 9, 1976, in Eventide, at the age of 75 years and 4 months.

Mrs. Lueck was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She attended rural and Denison schools.

On Feb. 13, 1926 she was united in marriage in Denison to Walter Lueck. They made their home on a farm near Denison. To this union one son, Vernon and one daughter, Ruth were born.

In 1953 they retired and moved to Denison. Mr. Lueck died in 1959. Mrs. Lueck continued to live at home until about 34 years ago when she entered Eventide.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Walter, two brothers, John and George, and one sister, Irene.

Survivors include her children, Vernon and Ruth (Mrs. Lyle Frazier) both of Denison, eight grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Anna Groth of Denison, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 11, in the Zion Lutheran Church, with Rev. Victor O. Hoyer officiating. Pallbearers were Donald Groth, Kenneth Lueck, Arden Amman, Roger Lueck, Wayne Frazier and Leo Burmeister. Interment was made in the Lutheran cemetery with Huebner Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Laura (Henkel) Hargens (1900 - 1996)

Laura Hargens was born April 21, 1900, the daughter of Herman and Augusta Borcherdt Henkel. She died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison on Friday, March 29,1996, at the age of ninety-five.

Laura grew up on a farm near Berne, Iowa, receiving her education in a rural school near her home. She was baptized in Christ at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hanover Township and confirmed in the Lutheran faith on March 28, 1915 at St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak.

On April 21, 1926, Laura was united in marriage to George Hargens in Denison, Iowa. The couple settled on a farm south of Ricketts. In 1942, the couple moved to Denison and then to Sioux City, in 1947 where they remained until George died in the early 1950's. Laura subsequently moved to Carroll and remained there until she entered the Eventide Nursing Home in Denison in 1986.

In earlier years, she enjoyed gardening, both vegetable and flowers; cooking, crocheting and other embroidery work. She also occupied her free time refinishing furniture.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, George, two sons, Earl and Alvin; one daughter, Dorothy Henkel; three brothers: Bernard, Robert and Daniel, four sisters: Molly Gosch, Frieda Seils, Amanda Krohnke and Minnia Hamaker, one great-grandchild, Heather Hargens.

Survivors include: two step-daughters: Elonore Meggers and her husband John of Charter Oak; Esther Turner of Denver, Colorado; one step-son Louie Hargens Sr. and his wife Eva of Charter Oak; two daughters-in-law, Betty Berka of Denison; and Emma Hargens of Ricketts; eleven grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, April 1, 1996 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Charles Haake officiated the service and grave side rites held at the St. Clair Cemetery in Ute, Iowa. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Henry Henningsen singing "On Eagle's Wings","Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound" and "The Lord's Prayer". Those serving as pallbearers were: Mike Friedrichsen, Dean Hargens, Jack Hargens, Louie Hargens Jr., Glenn Henkel and K.R. Buck. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at Cronk's Restaurant. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Lena Dorathea Carstensen (1908 - 1993)

Lena Dorathea Carstensen was born April 21, 1908, the daughter of Jens and Margaretha Petersen Carstensen. She died at her home near Ida Grove, la. on Friday, Sept. 10, 1993 at the age of 85 years.

Lena was born in Ostbordelum, Germany and received her education there before coming to the America in 1930. She settled in Crawford County and was employed by the Raymond Connors family for two years before joining her brothers. In 1947, they bought a farm eight miles north east of Schleswig where she settled and farmed with her brothers.

She was a considerate, loving and generous person always willing to give of herself. Her kindness and devotion are evidenced by her sharing and participation as a member of the United Church of Christ, the Dorcas Society and Ladies Aid of the Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother Johann on June 14, 1993.

Survivors include three brothers, Hans, Carsten and Fredrich and his wife, Elsie all of Ida Grove; and two sisters, Inge of Ida Grove and Anna Harder of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., Monday, Sept. 13, 1993 at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig with Rev. James Schatz officiating the services and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Evelyn Johnson provided the organ accompaniment for soloist Nancy Krueger singing "How Great Thou Art" and "Take Thou My Hand and Lead Me" and for the congregational hymn "He Leadeth Me". Those serving as pallbearers were Jens Peter Carstensen, Thomas Senhen, Wayne Schroeder, Grover Senhen, Merle Lansink and Dave Nemitz. A lunch was served to everyone in attendance by the Ladies Guild of the Church. The Huebner Funeral Home of Schleswig was in charge of the arrangements.

Lena (Christensen) Schwieso (1908 - 1995)

Lena, daughter of Killy (Kjeld) and Lena Johanna Frederichson Christensen, was born November 27, 1908 in Astor, Nishnabotna Township, Crawford County, Iowa. Because her mother died at the time of Lena's birth, Lena was raised primarily by her aunt, Ella Olson, After her graduation from rural school she began her working life.

On February 7, 1934 Lena was united in marriage with Wilbur Schwieso at the Lutheran Parsonage in Irwin. To this union were born five children. They farmed until 1951 when they moved into Manilla. Lena's husband died in 1982. She continued working for various people in the Manilla area throughout her life and retired from her work at the Manilla Manor in 1987.

Lena was a lifelong member of the Nishna Valley Club, as well as member of the Trinity Lutheran Church and the American Legion and VFW Auxiliaries.

In 1990 Lena became a resident of the Manilla Manor and had been in failing health since that time. Shortly after entering the Manning General Hospital she died there on Saturday, March 4, 1995 at the age of 86 years, 3 months, and 5 days.

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Jeffrey Schwieso.

Survivors include her children: Roger Schwieso and his wife, Connie, of Harlan; Janice Morman and her husband, Noble Heller, of Sun City, Arizona; Gary Schwieso and his wife, Georgia, of Carroll; Dennis Schwieso and his wife, Lucy, of Des Moines; and Kathy and her husband, Jim Nightingale, of Omaha, Nebraska; 10 grandchildren; one step-grandson; eight great grandchildren; and two 8 step-great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Services were held March 8, 1995 at 10:30 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church Manilla. Pastor Timothy Geitz officiated the service. Bonnie Lorenzen served as organist for soloists Milton and Ruth Ann Barry singing "Beyond the Sunset", and "How Great Thou Art" and the congregation singing "What a Friend We Have In Jesus." Interment was in the Nishnabotna Cemetery in Manilla. Casketbearers were Lester Steckelberg, Lester Hass, Keith Schwieso, Alan Jensen, Larry Justice, Roger Schwieso, Jr., and Ken Schwieso. The family wishes to express their gratitude for your kindness evidenced in thought, word, and deed.

LeNore Elizabeth Schultz (1905 - 1991)

LeNore Elizabeth Schultz was born March 2, 1905, the daughter of Albert Gustav and Elizabeth Kaysel Schultz. She died Feb. 6, 1991 at the Morningside Care Center in Ida Grove, Iowa at the age of 85 years.

LeNore was born in Schleswig, Iowa and received her primary education from the Schleswig Public Schools, graduating from High School with the class of 1922.

She continued her education at the collegiate level for two years at Cedar Falls, and summer schools at the University of Iowa and Drake University. She received her Bachelor Degree from Morningside College in 1947, and continued working toward her Masters Degree at the University of South Dakota.

Leo Gaughan (1904 - 2001)

Leo Gaughan was born May 19, 1904, the son of William and Margaret Shanahan Gaughan. He died at his former residence in Denison, Monday, October 15, 2001, at the age of ninety-seven.

Leo, as he was best known, was born in Ute, Iowa. He received his education at St. Boniface Catholic School in Charter Oak. After completing his education, he worked as a mechanic for George Fritz.

On October 17, 1928, Leo was united in marriage to Anna McKane at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison and were blessed with the birth of two children. The couple settled in Dunlap where Leo helped his father on the family farm.

In the 1930s, the family moved to Denison where he managed the Hill-Top Texaco filling station before working for Henry Saggau, at the Denison Auto.

He purchased a farm in the early 1940s and enjoyed being on the farm, especially in later years, when he went to the farm every day after work and counted calves.

In 1946, Leo started his own dealership on south Main street in Denison, selling Case farm machinery, and Maytag and Amana appliances. In June 1948, he began selling General Motors automobiles. His dealership was moved to the current location on Broadway in 1964 and later expanded his operation to Highway 30. In 1986, he expanded his dealership to carry the entire GM line of automobiles.

Leo was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison, the Iowa Auto Dealers Association, and the National Auto Dealers Association. He was a loving and devoted husband and father, who enjoyed being with his family. He also enjoyed going to Cronk's Restaurant, three times a day where he would enjoy coffee and visits with friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Anna in 1997. Survivors include, two children, daughter Ruth Remmes and her husband, Leo and son Jim and his wife, Sharon all of Denison; six grandchildren, eight greatgrandchildren; and one sister, Donna Fester of St. Anthony Minnesota.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Friday, October 19, 2001 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison with Fr. Edward Murray serving as Celebrant of the Mass and grave side rites at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Cemetery. Thursday Prayer Services included A Legion of Mary Rosary at 4:00 p.m., October 18, 2001 with an evening Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m., both at the funeral home in Denison. Jean Cornelius served as organist accompaniment for the St. Rose of Lima Choir. Those serving as pallbearers were Le Ann Gaughan, Michael Remmes, James Remmes, Robert Remmes, Sarah Gaughan and Mark Remmes. The family invited everyone attending the services to a fellowship luncheon at the Parish Center served by the Altar Society. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Leona Emma Mary (Hamann) Ehler (1908 - 1998)

Leona Emma Mary Ehler, daughter of William and Elenora Moltmann Hamann, was born June 13, 1908. She died at the Avera Bormann Manor, Parkston, South Dakota, on Monday, December 21, 1998 at the age of ninety years, six months and eight days.

She was born in Crawford County, near Schleswig, Iowa and was baptized in Christ at the Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Church in Schleswig and confirmed on March 25, 1923, by Rev. W.R. Wetzeler. She received her formal education at a rural school near her home, where she received her 8th grade diploma.

On February 19, 1929, Leona was united in marriage to Edward (Eddie) Ehler. The couple made their home in Schleswig, Iowa. During her professional career, Leona was employed as a receptionist and bookkeeper for Dr. H.D. Jones and Dr. M.U. Broers in Schleswig and also for Dr. Richard Johnson in Denison. Edward passed away on May 21, 1950 and Leona continued to live in Schleswig and work at Dr. Broers' office until retiring at the age of eighty.

Leona was a life long member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig and was also a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliaiy. In her leisure time, she enjoyed crocheting covers for coat hangers as gifts to others. Leona moved to Parkston, South Dakota, in December of 1997 and became a resident of Avera Bormann Manor.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Edward, an infant granddaughter, Mary Sue, one brother, Albert and two sisters, Amelia and Amanda.

Survivors include her son, Edward Ehler and his wife, Rheta, of Parkston, South Dakota; four grandchildren, Lina Koontz and her husband, Kevin of Liberty, Missouri; Jeri Ehler; Scott Ehler and his wife, Phyllis; Marc Ehler and his wife, Kim; three great-grandchildren, Sean Ehler, Aaron Ehler and Kacee Ehler, all of Parkston, South Dakota; one brother, William Hamann and his wife, LerDean of Apache Junction, Arizona; one sister, Ann Wallace of Galva, Iowa; nephew and nieces.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 P.M., Tuesday, December 29, 1998 at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Gordon Hoyt officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery, Schleswig. Dorothy Jessen provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "Just as I Am" and "How Great Thou Art". Those serving as pallbearers were: Robert Neuhaus, LeRoy Bumann, Harlan Buffum, Arlen Meseck, Neal Nahnsen and Dick Frank. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service and join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Women's Guild. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of arrangements.

Leona (Boysen) Jensen (1900 - 1979)

Mrs. Alfred C. Jensen, 79, San Jose, California, formerly of Mapleton, died Tuesday, September 4, 1979, in a hospital in San Jose after a long illness.

Services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 8, 1979, in the Walter Funeral Home in Mapleton. The Rev. Philip Ritter officiated. Burial was in Mount Hope Cemetery at Mapleton.

Mrs. Jensen, the former Leona Boysen, was born July 5, 1900, near Schleswig to Peter and Meta Boysen. She was united in marriage to Alfred C. Jensen on February 12, 1920, at Denison. The couple moved to Monroe, South Dakota, where they lived for three years. They moved back to Schleswig in 1931. In 1950, they moved to a farm near Mapleton.

After Mr. Jensen died in 1967, she moved to San Jose, where she was a member of the First Immanuel Lutheran Church at San Jose.

Survivors include a son, Alfred L. of Galesburg, Illinois; two daughters, Mrs. James (Arlene) Breckenridge of Fremond, California and Mrs. Melvin (Dolores) Gatewood of San Jose; two sisters, Mrs. Hilda Smith of Climbing Hill and Mrs. Adele Allen of Omaha; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, 1 brother and 2 sisters.

Pallbearers were Glenn Jensen, Dale Jensen, Orlan Hargens, Walter Jensen, Lee Nelson and Darrell Smith.

Leona Laura Louise (Moeller) Stiles (1907 - 1999)

Leona L. Stiles, age 92, of Odebolt, died Monday, April 26, 1999, at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, Iowa. Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 29 at the United Methodist Church in Odebolt, with Reverend Marcla F. Sangel officiating. Burial followed in the Odebolt Cemetery. Visitation was held at the Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Odebolt on Wednesday from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Born April 6, 1907, in Crawford County, Iowa, Leona Laura Louise (Moeller) Stiles was the daughter of William P. and Minnie (Hamman) Moeller. Leona grew up on a farm east of Schleswig, and attended rural schools through the eighth grade. At an early age she worked for various people in their homes. Leona was baptized and confirmed in the Evangelical Free Reform Church at Schleswig. In 1953, she joined the United Methodist Church in Odebolt.

On June 20, 1928, Leona married Edwin Theodore (Ted) Stiles in Denison, Iowa. They made their home on several farms in the Kiron and Odebolt area with their last being south of Odebolt. In 1952, they moved to their present home in the town of Odebolt.

Leona was an active partner in farming with her husband. She was an active member of the Rebekah Lodge and the Methodist Women. She enjoyed sewing, traveling south in the winter, her home, children and , grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Lena Moeller, Laura Christensen, and Laverne Wilier, and one son-in-law, Merle Hokanson.

Survivors include her husband, Ted; two daughters, Norma Hokanson of Dallas, Texas and Donna Buehler and husband, Duane of Odebolt; five grandchildren and one granddaughter-in-law, Todd Hokanson of Chandler, Arizona, Lisa Hokanson of Los Angeles, California, Karen Buehler of Ames, Jeff and Beth Buehler of Ft. Dodge, Iowa and Brian Buehler of Odebolt; two nephews and their spouses, Ronald and Jannette Willer of Schaller and Melvin and Donna Willer of Battle Creek; as well as many cousins and friends.

Leona Mary (Schweiso) Schultz (1907 - 1977)

Leona Mary Schultz was born on June 27, 1907 at Manning, Iowa, the daughter of August and Elvina Grage Schweiso. She died after a long illness on Sunday, December 25, 1977, at St. Luke's Hospital, Sioux City, Iowa at the age of 70.

Leona received her formal education in the Schleswig area schools. She was baptized and later confirmed into the Lutheran faith.

On February 1, 1928, Leona was united in marriage to Herman Schultz at Zion Lutheran Church, Denison, Iowa. Together they made their home on a farm near Schleswig. To this union were born a son and a daughter.

In 1964, they retired and moved to Schleswig. Herman died in 1972 and Leona continued to make Schleswig her home.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Leona was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

Survivors include: one son, Virgene of Denison, one daughter Karen, Mrs. Bill Frandsen of Cherokee, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Also by one brother Albert Schwieso of Manilla and four sisters, Mrs. Gertrude Smith of Denison, Helen, Mrs. Harry Kral of Vail, Mrs. Ann Steffen of Utah and Ruby, Mrs. Charles Waggoner of California.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, December 28, 1977, at 10:30 a.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig, Iowa. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery. The Rev. Theodore Letzring officiated at the services. Music at the services was provided by the Ladies Choir and Mrs. Leroy Hight, organist. Pallbearers included: Joseph Kral, Charles Richert, Gerald Boger, John Schultz, Robert Schweiso and Dennis Couch.

Lenard Kastner (1906 - 1978)

Lenard Kastner was born on September 26, 1906, at Otter Creek Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the son of August and Ambria Kastner. He died on Thursday morning, March 30, 1978, at St. Luke's Medical Center, Sioux City, at the age of 71.

Lenard was raised on a family farm and attended the rural schools near Schleswig. He was baptized and later confirmed into the Christian faith.

On January 26, 1930, Lenard was united in marriage to Edna Schultz at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hanover Township. Together they made their home on Lenard's home place. In 1953, they moved to Schleswig. Lenard later retired and continued to live in Schleswig. He served on the United Church of Christ church council as well as the spiritual council.

Lenard was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife Edna of Schleswig and three daughters, Delores, Mrs. August Nemitz Jr. of Kiron, Donna Lou, Mrs. Gerald Meeves of Schleswig, and Edna Mae, Mrs. Roger Lee Johannsen of Arthur. Also by ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 1, 1978, at 10:00 a.m. at the United Church of Christ, Schleswig, Iowa. The Rev. Fred Moore officiated at the services. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery. Pallbearers included: Broder Petersen, Fritz Miller, Richard Dorale, Herbert Miller, Wilbert Johannsen and Marvin Baker.

Leone Marie (Kroll) Hennings (1909 - 1995)

Leone Marie Hennings , was born August 27,1909, the daughter of Gustav and Louise Sell Kroll. She died on Monday, October 2, 1995 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa at the age of eighty-six years.

She was born in Yankton, South Dakota and as a young girl moved with her family to Iowa. Leone was baptized on September 27, 1909 and later confirmed at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Soldier township, Charter Oak, where she also received her education.

On December 31, 1931, Leone was united in marriage to Arthur Glen Hennings at the Lutheran Parsonage in Denison, Iowa by Rev. William Frese. The couple settled on a farm near Ricketts, Iowa and continued to farm until retiring and moving to Ricketts.

Leone was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hanover Township and the Ricketts Jolly Club. She was a devoted wife who enjoyed reading, gardening and making strawberry jam for her nieces and nephews whom she loved so very deeply.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on May 2, 1967; three brothers, Rayellis, LeRoy and Werner "Barney" Kroll and one sister, Helen Streich.

Survivors include one brother, Gustav "Don" Kroll and his wife, Mary of Long Beach, California; one sister, Madalene Good and her husband, Bob of Palm Desert, California; one brother-in-law, Earl Hennings and his wife, Mabel of Denison; one sister-in-law, Arlene Hennings of Ricketts; also many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, October 6, 1995 at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hanover Township, Charter Oak, Iowa with Rev. Eugene Ernst officiating the service and grave side rites held at the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Soldier Township, Charter Oak, Iowa, Shirley Stull provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Henry Henningsen singing "Rock of Ages" and "On Eagle's Wings" and congregational hymn "I'm But a Stranger Here". Pallbearers were: Herbert Bohlmann, Wayne Kuhlmann, Delmer Clausen. Herman Jepsen, Paul Briggle and Jerry Jors. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them for lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak was in charge of arrangements.

Leslie Lingle (1909 - 1996)

Leslie Lingle was born on a farm near Denison, Iowa, September 7, 1909, the son of George W. and Charlotte Keubler Lingle. He was raised on the farm and received his education in the local rural schools.

On October 21, 1931, Leslie was united in marriage with Thelma Judy. Their union was blessed with one daughter, Bette. They made their home on a farm near Cherokee, Iowa before moving to their present farm home west of Schleswig in 1958 where he farmed until his retirement.

Thelma died March 19, 1996 and since that time Leslie had resided at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Denison.

Leslie died Tuesday afternoon, April 23, 1996 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 86 years, 7 months and 16 days.

Those who remain to cherish his memory include his daughter Bette and her husband, William Paynter of Indianapolis, Indiana, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, April 27, 1996 at the Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa with the Rev. Thomas S. Buzbee officiating. Casket bearers included Dan C. Pfannebecker, Joseph Griffin, Cyrenus Knief, Robert Curnyn, Robert Hitt and Wayne Flickinger. Interment was in Oakland Cemetery in Denison. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Lester Andrew Schwanz (1907 - 1989)

Lester Andrew Schwanz, the son of Andrew Henrick and Johanna Adaline Darling Schwanz, was born on Aug. 29, 1907, on a farm near Brogan, Ia., in Crawford County.

He died on Sept. 2, 1989, at the Denison Care Center in Denison, Ia., at the age of 82 years and four days.

Lester grew up on a farm near Deloit and attended rural school, through the 8th grade. After his education, he helped his father on the farm.

On March 12, 1937, Lester and Marie Johanna Cassens were united in marriage in the Lutheran Parsonage in Denison by Pastor Frehse. This union was blessed with three daughters. They farmed in the Ida Grove, Schleswig and Kiron areas until moving to Schleswig in 1970. Due to failing health, Lester entered the Denison Care Center on Jan. 15, 1988.

Lester was baptized and confirmed upon joining the Trinity Lutheran Church in Grant Township in 1940. He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig at the time of his death.

Preceding him in death were his mother, Johanna; his father, Andrew; one sister, Grace; and two brothers, Clarence and Edson.

He is survived by his wife, Marie of Schleswig; his daughters: Janice and her husband, Vernie Lutz of Kiron, Judy and her husband, Donald Kragel of Ute and Linda and friend, George Renaud of Denver, Colo.; seven grandsons; three granddaughters; four great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter; also two sisters, Sally and her husband, Carl Lamaak of Schleswig and Dorothy and her husband, Don Determann of Odebolt; four brothers: Harry Schwanz and his wife, Mildred of Denison, Paul Schwanz and his wife, Marie of Denison, LeRoy Schwanz and his wife, Pearl of Storm Lake and Wilbert Schwanz and his wife, Lila of Alta; his stepmother, Bess Schwanz of Schaller; stepsister, Betty Sands of Holstein; one uncle, Louie Schwanz of Odebolt and one aunt, Mrs. Magdaline Lange of Wall Lake, as well as many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. Pastor Richard E. Nelson and Pastor Kenneth Hessel officiated at the services with interment in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. Mrs. Marlene Hight was organist and Mrs. Donna Davis was soloist. The selection was "Rock of Ages" and congregation hymns were "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" and "I'm But A Stranger Here." Serving as pallbearers were Douglas W. Dasel, 1st Lt. Barry Kragel, Bradley Kragel, Jeffrey Lutz, Kevin Lutz and Arlo Schwanz. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig.

Lillian (Lafrentz) Jensen (1908 - 2000)

Lillian Jensen was born April 7, 1908, the daughter of John and Ida Jessen Lafrentz. She died Thursday, May 18, 2000 at the Eventide Nursing Home in Denison, Iowa at the age of ninety-two.

Lillian was born in Otter Creek Township near Kiron, Iowa and after completing her education she helped her parents on the farm.

On December 9, 1931, Lillian was united in marriage to Roy Jensen at Elk Point, South Dakota. The couple settled on a farm near Schleswig and were blessed with the birth of two daughters, Lois and Linda. Lillian and Roy enjoyed working together on the farm until retiring in 1968 and moving to Schleswig.

Roy and Lillian were privileged to celebrate their fiftieth wedding anniversary in December of 1981. Roy died on November 14, 1989. Lillian continued to make her home in Schleswig until 1994, when she moved to Eventide Senior Housing in Denison. She entered Eventide Nursing Home in January of 2000.

Lillian was a member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig and various card clubs. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. Lillian also enjoyed gardening and caring for her yard. In her leisure time, she enjoyed making crafts and traveling.

Lillian was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Roy, two brothers, Art and Harold Lafrentz and one sister, Emily Kuehl.

Survivors include two daughters, Lois Pickel and her husband, Richard of Schleswig; Linda Miller and her husband, Robert of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, Rick Pickel of Des Moines and his son Tim Pickel of Sac City; Lori Kragel and her husband, Gene of Ute; LaShelle Carlson and her husband, Lloyd and their children Lance and Lana of Des Moines; Scott Bielenberg and his wife, Glenda and their children Dereck and Lesley of Deloit; Christie Butterwick and her son Alec of Cedar Rapids; three sisters-in-law, Hilda Lafrentz of Schleswig; Selma Lafrentz and Helen Johannsen, both of Denison.

Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, May 22, 2000 at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Bob Fritzmeier officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Dorothy Jessen provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Rubie Kastner singing "On Eagle's Wings" and "How Great Thou Art" and congregational hymn "Amazing Grace". Those serving as pallbearers were: Murlin Johannsen, Wayne Lafrentz, Scott Bielenberg, Dale Lafrentz, Val Hennings and Rick Pickel. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Women's Guild. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of arrangements.

Lillian Sophia (Meggers) Listamann (1902 - 1988)

Lillian Sophia Listamann, the daughter of Frank and Dora Helmday Meggers, was born on Dec. 15, 1902, in Hanover Township, Crawford County, Ia., and died on Nov. 14, 1988, at the Denison Care Center in Denison, at the age of 85 years.

Lillian received her education in rural schools and attended the Zion Lutheran School in Denison in the 8th grade.

On May 11, 1921, Lillian and Henry Listamann of Charter Oak, were united in marriage in Denison. This union was blessed with six children. Henry and Lillian farmed in Hanover Township most of their farming career.

Henry died in April, 1972, and Lillian continued ot live on the farm until December, 1975, when she moved to Denison. Lillian's greatest enjoyment was to have her family around her and cooking and baking for them. She also enjoyed needle work and working in her flower garden.

Lillian was baptized in infancy and later confirmed at the Zion Lutheran Church on March 28, 1920, and was a member of the church at the time of her death. She was also a member of the Ladies Aid of the church.

Preceding Lillian in death were her parents; her husband, Henry; two brothers, Julius and John; one sister, Anna Meggers; one son in infancy and two grandsons.

Survivors include her children: Erwin Listamann, Walter and his wife, Cheryl Listamann, Lorna and her husband, Gilbert Moeller. Delaine and his wife, Dorothy Listamann and Donald Listamann, all of Denison; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and one brother, Harry Meggers and his wife, Erma of Denison.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 17, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Pastor Kurt Kaiser officiated at the services with interment in the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Mrs. Darold Kahl was organist for Henry Hennignsen, soloist and congregational singing. Selections were "How Great Thou Art," "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" and "I Know That My Redeemer Lives." Pallbearers were Thomas Loneman, Larry Listamann, Lyle Listamann, Michael Harrington, Ron Hollander and Dan Jacobsen.

Lillian Mae (Turner) Malone (1901 - 1985)

Lillian Mae Malone was born at Kenwood, IA, Aug. 2, 1901, the daughter of James and Blanche Squibb Turner. She was raised on the farm and received her formal education in the country schools.

On Aug. 14, 1920, Lillian was married to Elmer N. Malone at Denison and they made their home here. Elmer was killed in a train truck accident Feb. 6, 1941, and Lillian continued to reside in Denison until 1970, when she moved to Lake View to be near her daughter Phyllis.

In October of 1984, Lillian moved to Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison. She died Sunday morning, Jan. 13, 1985, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison. At the time of her death she had attained the age of 83 years, five months, and 11 days.

Lillian was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one daughter, Genevieve King, five brothers, Robert, Virgil, Fred, William and Thomas Turner, and four sisters, Nell Merrick, Maude Stephenson, Sylvia Turner, and Grace Kabel.

She is survived by one daughter, Phyllis, Mrs. Keith Kepford of Bella Vista, Arkansas; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and one brother, John Turner of Council Bluffs. Also surviving are nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, 1985, at the Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison with the Rev. James D. Cobb officiating. Comfort in music was provided by Mrs. Terry Magden singing "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Amazing Grace" with Mrs. Dorothy Norman serving as organist. Pallbearers included Dan C. Pfannebecker, J.R. Robertson, Douglas Swarthout, and Howard Shaw. Interment wag in the Oakland Cemetery in Denison. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Lilly I. (Giermann) Kropf (1908 - 1998)

Lilly I. Kropf was born on a farm in Stockholm Township near Boyer, Iowa, January 3, 1908, the daughter of August and Ida Koehn Giermann. She was received into God's Kingdom of Grace through the Sacrament of holy Baptism February 2, 1908 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Stockholm Township, and confirmed in her Christian Faith there April 9, 1922. She was raised on the farm and received her education in the local rural schools.

On December 28, 1939, Lilly was united in marriage with Arnold Kropf at St. John's Lutheran Church, Stockholm Township and their union was blessed with one daughter, Jolene. The Kropfs' farmed in Stockholm Township and the Crawford County area until their retirement in 1971 when they moved to Boyer.

Arnold died September 10, 1973 and Lilly continued to reside in her home in Boyer. When Lilly's health began to fail in the early 1980's she moved to her daughter. Jolene's, home in rural Odebolt where she was lovingly cared for by Jolene and her grandchildren, Sherrl, James and Marni.

Lilly died peacefully at home with her loving daughter at her side Monday afternoon, July 27, 1998. At the time of her death she had attained the age of 90 years, 6 months and 24 days.

Lilly was a lifetime member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Kiron where when her health, permitted she was active in their Ladies Aid. In addition to her church she enjoyed memberships in the Loren Club, G.L.F.W. Club and Jolly Pitch Club. She will long be remembered for her quiet manner, hard work ethic, love of helping people and cooking for any and all who graced her doors.

Including her parents and her husband Lilly was preceded in death by two brothers, Henry and Fred Giermann, one sister, Elsie Neumann and one great granddaughter, Jessica Schwanz.

Those who remain to cherish her memory include her daughter, Jolene Schwanz of rural Odebolt, three grandchildren and their spouses, Sherri and David Blair of Odebolt, James and Brenda Schwanz of Vail and Marni and Bryan Herrig of Wall Lake, eleven great grandchildren, Kariann, Jenilynn, Jesse, Cassie, Dillon, Joshua, Cade, Spencer, Colton, Callie and Sydney, two sisters-in-law, Lula Baker of Kiron and LaMorn Kropf of Wall Lake, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, July 30, 1998 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Kiron, Iowa with the Rev. Hilmer J. Hafner officiating. Music for the service was provided by Ray and Kathie Willhoite singing two duets, "In The Garden" and "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" and the congregation singing "Let The Earth Now Praise The Lord". Lois Gronau served as organist. Casket bearers included James Schwanz, David Blair, Bryan Herrig, Dale Wulf, Gary Wulf, David Fineran and Melvin Baker. Interment was in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Stockholm Township, Kiron, Iowa. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Louie W. Kelm (1908 - 1981)

Louie W. Kelm was born on Nov. 2, 1908 at Charter Oak, Iowa, the son of Louie and Emma Martens Kelm. He died Mar. 20, 1981 at St. Joseph Hospital, Omaha, Nebr., at the age of 71.

Louie grew up in the Charter Oak community. He was educated in the St. John's Lutheran Schools. After the completion of his education he worked for other farmers in the area.

On Feb. 20, 1932, Louie was united in marriage to Lucille Meseck at Vermillion, S.D. Together they farmed in the Charter Oak area. Lucille died on Nov. 25, 1969.

Later, on Dec. 7, 1974, Louie was united in marriage to Edna Koeppen at Charter Oak. They continued to make their home on a farm near Charter Oak.

Louie was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, where he was baptized in 1909 and later in 1924 confirmed in the Lutheran faith. In addition to his many services to the church he served as president of the L.L.L. He also served on the Board of Eventide Lutheran Home and was active in the Charter Oak Senior Citizens Center.

In addition to his parents and his wife Lucille, Louie was preceded in death by one infant, son, three brothers and one sister.

Survivors include, his wife Edna of Charter Oak, one son Ronald and his wife Shirley of Ricketts, four grandchildren ana a granddaughter-in-law and two sisters, Mrs. Hilda Krueger of Denison and Adela Strait of Denver, Colo. Also by four stepdaughters, Marlene, Mrs. Edward Marth of Ricketts, Mrs. Shirley Grindie of Ute, Marjorie, Mrs. Harold Thiel of Omaha and Jan Johnson of Castana and by twelve step grandchildren and six step great-grandchildren.


Funeral services were held March 23 at 1:30 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, Charter Oak. Burial was in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery. The Rev. L.C. Gebhardt officiated at the services. Pallbearers included, Bill Beck, Walter Hagemann, Gary Meseck, Allen Meseck, Richard Krueger and Richard Brown. Honorary pallbearers were Elmer Schultz, Elmer Kutscinski, Martin Thies, Herbert Thies, Herman Maahs, Leo Adams, Henry Baak and Paul Staley. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Charter Oak.

Louise Bertha (Dethman) Pithan (1904 - 1999)

Louise Bertha Pithan was born July 4,1904, the daughter of Henry and JoHannah Dethman. She died at the Crowell Nursing Home in Blair, Nebraska, Monday, January 25, 1999 at the age of ninety-four.

Louise was born on a farm, one mile north of Deloit, Iowa, where she began her elementary education. When she was eight years old, Louise moved with her family to a farm near Denison. She continued her education in the Denison Community School, graduating from the Denison High School with the class of 1923. After completing her education, Louise worked in the Crawford County Courthouse in Denison.

In 1924, Louise was united in marriage to William Pithan. The couple made their home in Charter Oak and were blessed with the birth of five children.

Louise was baptized and confirmed on August 2, 1925 at St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak, Iowa by Rev. A. Amstein, where she was a devoted member. In 1946, she became a member of St. John's Ladies Aid. Louise was a loving and caring mother and grandmother. She enjoyed bird watching, loved sports and was a Yankees and Iowa Hawkeyes fan.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, William in 1989, one daughter, Mary Catherine in infancy and one brother, Robert.

Survivors include one son, Norman Pithan and his wife, JoAnn of Omaha; three daughters, Phyllis Remmes and her husband, Charles of Lemon Grove, California; Maxine Sloan and her husband, Dr. William of San Diego, California; Shirley Shephard and her husband, Charles of Vista, California; eight grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Verna Pithan of Charter Oak; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., Friday, January 29, 1999 at the St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak. Rev. L.C. Gebhardt officiated the service and grave side rites held at the St. Paul's Cemetery, Charter Oak, Iowa. Art Beeck provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "Just as I Am", "I'm But a Stranger Here" and "Nearer, My God, to Thee". Those serving as pallbearers were: Leonard Keating Jr., K. Dean Rodewald, Edwin Nemitz, Orville Riessen, Lyle Petersen and Jim Pester. The family invited everyone at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak was in charge of arrangements.

Louise E. (Suhr) Hanss (1903 - 1998)

Louise E. Hanss was born on a farm in Nishnabotna Township, Denison, Iowa, June 27, 1903, the daughter of Johannes and Alvina Winkler Suhr. She was raised on the farm and received her education in the local rural schools. Following her schooling she did domestic work in the Denison area.

In March of 1932, Louise was united in marriage with Adolph Hanss at Blair, Nebraska. They made their home in Denison and their union was blessed with two daughters, Barbara and Norma.

Mr. Hanss died December 3, 1952 and Louise remained in Denison. Following her husband's death Louise managed Hanss Trailer Court for many years and later was employed at the Jo-Mart Motel. Her retirement years were spent in Denison where she enjoyed spending time with her daughters and grandchildren. Since 1983 she had resided at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison.

Louise died Thursday evening, March 5, 1998 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa. At the time her death she had attained the age of 94 years, 8 months and 8 days. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Denison.

Including her parents and husband, Louise was preceded in death by her daughter, Barbara Lueck, four brothers, Emil, Henry, Martin and Jack Suhr and one sister, Marie Suhr.

Those who remain to cherish her memory include one daughter, Norma and her husband, Henry Brus of Council Bluffs, Iowa, son-in-law, Vernon Lueck of Denison, Iowa, five grandchildren, Dorothy Lueck of Newton, Iowa, Nancy Lueck of Muscatine, Iowa, Roger Lueck of Denison, Iowa, Sandra and husband, Robert Conklin of Kansas City, Missouri, and Jennifer and husband, Mike Lindstrom of Council Bluffs, Iowa, two great grandchildren, Brittanie and Ethan Conklin of Kansas City, Missouri, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, March 10, 1998 at the Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa with the Rev. Thomas S. Buzbee officiating. Music for the service included Henry Henningsen singing "The Lord's Prayer" and the playing of a recording of "Wind Beneath My Wings". Marilynn Jepsen served as organist. Casket bearers were Dwight Brus, Jerry Brus, Steve Brus, John Brus, Mike Lindstrom and Roger Lueck. Interment was in the Oakland Cemetery in Denison. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Louise Hanna (Blunck) Bliesman (1903 - 2000)

Louise Hanna Bliesman was born at Neumunster, Schleswig, Holstein, Germany, October 23, 1903, the daughter of Ernst and Anna Paulsen Blunck. She was received into God's Kingdom of Grace through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism in November of 1903 in Germany and confirmed in her Christian Faith there, April 18, 1917. Her formative years were spent in Germany where she received her education.

In 1922 Louise came to the United States of America and settled at Denison, Iowa, where, in 1925, she was united in marriage with Carl Linke. They made their home on a farm north of Schleswig, Iowa and their union was blessed with one son, Carl. Mr. Linke died in 1948 and following his death Louise moved to Denison where she was employed as a clerk.

In 1951, Louise was united in marriage with William Bliesman at Denison and they made their home on the farm north of Schleswig until retiring and moving to Denison.

Mr. Bliesman died in 1971. Louise spent her retirement years in Denison where she enjoyed her membership at Zion Lutheran Church, Zion Ladies Aid and Dorcas Society. On December 19, 1994 Louise moved to Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison and it was there her death occurred Wednesday, April 26, 2000. At the time of her death she had attained the age of 96 years, 6 months and 3 days.

Including her parents and two husbands, Louise was preceded in death by her son, Carl Linke and her sister, Anna Marie Hass.

Those who remain to cherish her memory include one step-daughter, Goldie and husband, Raymond Baker of Kiron, Iowa, one daughter-in-law, Mardell Linke of Ida Grove, Iowa, three grandchildren, Wayne Linke and wife, Linda of Lawrenceville, Georgia, Michael Linke of Atlanta, Georgia and Dave Linke and wife, Debi of Norcross, Georgia, seven great-grandchildren, two step grandchildren, Roger Baker and wife, Karen of Kiron, Iowa and Karen Baker of Kiron, one step-grandson, other relatives and friends.

Graveside Memorial services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Thursday, June 8, 2000 at the Morgan Township Cemetery at Schleswig with interment following. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison is in charge of arrangements.

Louise Helene (Jurgensen) Schultz (1901 - 1980)

Louise Helene Schultz was born Sept. 23, 1901, in Crawford County, Iowa, the daughter of Charles and Augusta Rickert Jurgensen. She died May 13, 1980, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, at the age of 78.

Louise was raised near Schleswig on a family farm. She received her early education in the Morgan Township Schools. Later she graduated from the Schleswig High School in 1920. She continued her education by attending college in Cedar Falls. For a number of years, Louise taught in the rural schools near Schleswig.

On Feb. 15, 1925, Louise was united in marriage to Otto Schultz at Schleswig. They farmed in Soldier Township later moving to Hanover Township. In 1951 they retired and moved to Schleswig. Shortly after Mr. Schultz's death in 1974, Louise entered Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison.

Louise was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. Survivors include, one daughter, Charlene, Mrs. Gerald Pedersen of Schleswig, three grandchildren, Darla and her husband Jerry Gardner, Donna and her husband Dean Box and Daryl and his wife Barb Pedersen and by one great grandson, Ryan Box. Also by one sister, Mrs. Hertha Janssen of Schleswig.

Funeral services were held May 15 at 10:30 a.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. The Rev. Theodore Letzring officiated at the services. Pallbearers included Oran Kuehl, Lorenz Schultz, Milford Schultz, Gordon Hahnsen, Herbert Rickers and Ed Gosch. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Louise M. (Wulf) Groth (1904 - 1993)

Louise M. Groth, the daughter of Johannes and Charlotte Kohrs Wulf, was born Dec. 6, 1904, near Schleswig. She died on Monday, March 29, 1993 at her home near Schleswig at the age of 88 years.

Louise was born on a farm in Morgan Township, Crawford County, Ia. She was baptized as an infant and later confirmed on March 28, 1920 at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig and received her education in a rural school near her home. She subsequently attended a sewing school for one year.

As a young woman, Louise worked in various homes in the Schleswig and Ricketts regions until she was united in marriage to William C. Groth on Nov. 25, 1925 at the home of her parents in Goodrich Township. The couple settled on a farm in Goodrich Township and were blessed with the birth of eight children.

Louise was a loving and caring mother and grandmother who enjoyed the companionship of her family. Additionally, she enjoyed sewing, tatting, quilting and baking, especially rye bread. Other interests include canning, gardening, and farming. She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig and a member of the Ladies Guild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William in 1964; one sister, Amelia Hagemann; one brother, Harvey Wulf; and one granddaughter, Kathy.

Survivors include three sons, Wilbert and his wife, Donna, Milroy and his wife, Marlene, and Vertus and his wife, Marlys all of Denison; five daughters, Darlene Jensen and her husband, Arlo of Schleswig, Irene Meiners and her husband, Herman of Denison, Marilyn Pirwitz and her husband, Darlo of Charter Oak, Betty Meeves and her husband, Paul of Dunlap, and Margaret Moeller and her husband, Erwin of Denison; twenty-three grandchildren; thirty-one great grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one brother, Arthur Wulf of Schleswig.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 2, 1993 at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. Rev. James Schatz officiated the service and graveside rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Evelyn Johnson provided the organ accompaniment for Janet Lafrentz. Pam Gronau and Barb Buffum sang, "How Great Thou Art" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus." Honorary pallbearers were Bryan Meeves, Mike Meiners, Russell Groth, Randy Jensen, Brent Meeves and Kevin Groth. Pallbearers were Dennis Pirwitz, Bryce Meeves, Larry Jensen, Dale Meiners, Roger Groth, Keith Groth and Gayln Moeller. The Walter A. Louis John Segebart (1900 - 1976)

Louis John Segebart, son of Jon and Christina Hinricksen Segebart, was born near Manilla, May,12, 1900, and died Sunday, November 21, 1976, at Crawford County Memorial Hospital, after a prolonged illness, having reached the age of 76 years, 6 months, and 9 days.

Mr. Segebart was raised on a farm near Manilla and attended rural schools. He farmed in the Manilla community until retiring to Denison in December of 1971.

Mr. Segebart was united in marriage to Ida Hoffmeier on February 15, 1922. Six sons and two daughters were born to this union. Mrs. Segebart died October 28, 1969. Mr. Segebart continued to live on the farm until December of 1971.

He was united in marriage to Leota Trulsen of Denison on December 23, 1971. They made their home in Denison.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Ida, one son, Bernard, and one half sister, Inga.

Survivors include his wife, Leota, five sons, Walter of Harrisburg, Pa., Raymond of Dow City, Harold of Schleswig, Alfred of Danbury, and Donald of Radcliff, Kentucky, two daughters, Arlene (Mrs. Arnold Spohn) of Grandview, Missouri, and Mary Ann of Aurora, Colorado, twenty grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, two brothers, John of Ida Grove, and Charles of California, one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Comstock of Denison, five half-brothers, Pete Mumm of Florence, South Dakota, Jake Mumm of California, Carl Mumm of Portland, Oregon, William of Storm Lake, and Henry of Oregon, two half-sisters, Anna (Mrs. Harold 0. Jensen) of Denison, and Helen (Mrs. Louie Schrock) of Des Moines, nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, November 24, in the United Presbyterian Church, Denison, with Reverend James D. Cobb officiating. Pallbearers were Steven Segebart, Dale Segebart, Ron Buckley, Timothy Spohn, Lavern Segebart, and Richard Spohn. Interment was made in the Lutheran Cemetery with Huebner Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Lulela Marie Karoline (Mundt) Lenz (1900 - 1997)

Lulela (Lula) Marie Karoline Lenz was born July 27, 1900, the daughter of W. D. and Anna Lochmiller Mundt. She died on Friday, December 5, 1997 at the Denison Care Center, Denison, Iowa at the age of ninety-seven.

Lula was born on a farm in Nishnabotna Township, Denison, Iowa and was baptized in Christ August 23, 1900 at Zion Lutheran Church, Denison, by Rev. Lothringer and later confirmed there on March 28, 1913. She received her education at a rural school in Nishnabotna Township.

On August 22, 1918, Lula was united in marriage to Frank Lenz at Carroll, Iowa. The couple settled on a farm in Paradise Township, Denison, Iowa and were blessed with the birth of one daughter, Lois Anne. The couple farmed until retiring in 1944 and moving to Denison.

Lula was a life-long member of the Zion Lutheran Church, Denison, their Ladies Aid and served as past president. Church was very important to Lula and she was very active in helping on the new Zion Lutheran School Building Committee and was one of the original organizers of the Ladies Aid Smorgasbord. She was a very loving and caring mother and grandmother who devoted her life to her grandchildren. In her leisure time, Lula enjoyed quilting, crocheting, sewing and socializing in a game of cards.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Frank in July 1979, one grandson, John Patrick Houston, twin sisters in infancy, two brothers, Barney Mundt and Reiny Mundt.

Survivors include: one daughter, Lois Houston and her husband, Pat of Denison; six grandchildren, Colette Marsh of Arlington, Texas; Barbara Houston Constance and her husband, Steve of Ames; Sally J. Quandt and her husband, Herbert; Timothy J. Houston and his wife, Kelli; Jane Carstensen and her husband, Rick, all of Denison; Anne Garreans and her husband, Jeff of Sioux City; sixteen greatgrandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; two sisters-in-law, Lillian Lenz of Seattle; Washington; Jane Mundt of Denison; two nieces, Marilyn Besmer; Norma Wissman, both of Seattle, Washington; and three nephews, Barry Mundt; Michael Mundt, both of Denison; and Robert Mundt of Broomfield, Colorado.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., Monday, December 8, 1997 at the Zion Lutheran Church, Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. Daniel Gifford officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Lulu K. (Vogt) Gluesing (1905 - 1991)

Lulu K. Gluesing was born May 6, 1905, the daughter of Wilhelm (Bill) and Selma Franke Vogt, in Paradise Township, Iowa. She died May 20, 1991 at the Roosevelt Nursing Home in Culbertson, Mont., at the age of 86 years.

Lulu was brought up in Kenwood. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. She received her education in the area schools, graduating from the Denison Community High School and attending Morningside College in Sioux City.

After completing her education, Lulu taught in rural schools until she was united in marriage to Arthur F. Gluesing, Aug. 17, 1927, on the Vogt family farm near Denison.

The couple made their home in Hanover Township, Crawford County, until 1950 when they moved south of Ute, to farm until their retirement in the early 1970's.

In 1975, her husband, Arthur, died and in 1979, Lulu moved to Culbertson, Mont., to live.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Betty Ann Yelsma in 1967; her parents; two brothers and one step-grandchild.

Survivors include her son, Wayne Gluesing and his wife, Mary of Klamath Falls, Ore.; seven grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; six step grandchildren; 10 step great-grandchildren and one sister, Hulda Nissen of Fremont, Neb.

A funeral service was held Friday, May 23, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Culbertson, Mont., with the Reverend Jon Beake officiating the service. A second funeral service was held Tuesday, May 28 at the Walter A. Huebner & Sons' Funeral Home in Charter Oak, with Pastor Edgar Bode officiating the service and the grave side rites at the St. Clair Cemetery in Ute. Mrs. Creta Teut provided the organ accompaniment for the congregational hymns "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" and "I Fall Asleep in Jesus' Wounds." Pallbearers were Donald Petersen, Duane Mordhorst, Jerome Mordhorst, Jeff Mordhorst, Gilbert Moeller and Stanley Frydenlund. Walter A. Huebner & Sons' Funeral Home of Charter Oak was in charge of the arrangements.

LuVerne Anna Caroline (Bielenberg) Mohr (1905 - 2001)

LuVerne Anna Caroline Mohr was bom April 8, 1905. the daughter of Julius and Dora Jalide Bielenberg. She died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Thursday, September 6, 2001 at the age of ninety-six.

LuVerne was born in Schleswig, Iowa, Crawford County where she grew up on the family farm. She received her education in a rural school near her home, was baptized in Christ October 28, 1905 in Grant Township and was confirmed, October 26, 1924 at the Friedens Evangelical Church in Schleswig.

March 10, 1926, LuVerne was united in marriage to Harvey Mohr. The couple settled in Crawford County near Schleswig and was blessed with the birth of one daughter. The couple farmed together until January 21, 1965 when they moved to Schleswig to retire.

September 14, 1985, Harvey died and LuVerne remained in their home in Schleswig until moving to the Retirement Apartments in May of 1993.

She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, and their Ladies Aid. In her leisure time, LuVerne enjoyed the out-of-doors, gardening, fishing and hunting. After her husband, Harvey died, she enjoyed crocheting and became an avid reader in both the Schleswig Town Library and Immanuel's Church Library. In more recent years, she enjoyed baking cookies, socializing and playing cards. She always had the coffee on for the family and friends.

LuVerne was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harvey; two brothers, Clifford and Clarence Bielenberg; and two sisters, Leona Jensen and Valasta Jensen.

Survivors include her daughter, Marlyn Else and her husband, James of Schleswig; one granddaughter, Vickie Huebner of Longmont, Colorado; three great-grandchildren, Andrea Huebner Boyer and her husband, David of Schleswig; Aaron Huebner of Denison; and Allisa Tiefenthaler and her husband, Jon of Breda.

Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m., Monday, September 10, 2001, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Merle Mahnken officiated the services and grave side rites held at Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Organist Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for Ruby Kastner as she sang "The Lord's Prayer", and "Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me", and for the congregational hymns "How Great Thou Art", and "I'm But A Stranger Here". Those serving as honorary pallbearers were: Herbert Wellendorf, Leon Neubauer, Edmund Hamann, Orville Hansen, and Earl Bumann. Those serving as pallbearers were: Vickie J. Huebner, Andrea L. Huebner Boyer, Aaron J. W. Huebner, Allisa K. Tiefenthaler, David K. Boyer, and Jon A. Tiefenthaler. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them in fellowship and lunch served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of arrangements.

LuVern M. (Burk) Schneider (1909 - 1992)

LuVern M. Schneider, 83, of Battle Creek died Tuesday, July 7, 1992, at the Willow Dale Care Center in Battle Creek. Services were at 10:00 a.m. Friday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Battle Creek with the Rev. Donald H. Winterrowd officiating. Burial was in Mount Hope Cemetery, Battle Creek. Visitation was after noon Thursday at the Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home, Battle Creek.

Mrs. Schneider was born April 21, 1909, near Schleswig, the daughter of Charley and Emma (Petersen) Burk. She attended country school near Schleswig. Prior to her marriage, she did domestic work in Schleswig.

She married Edward Schneider Feb. 10, 1932, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove. The couple farmed in the Schleswig and Battle Creek area until his death Jan. 10, 1975.

She moved into Battle Creek at that time. She had worked for Maxine Arney Catering in Holstein, the Maple Leaf Cafe in Battle Creek for many years, and Hayes Oil in Battle Creek. Mrs. Schneider was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Battle Creek, where she was active in the Ladies Circle.

Survivors include a daughter, Sandra Sue Burton of Danbury; two grandchildren, Kelly Burton of South Sioux City and Mrs. Lonnie (Kristie) Ebel of Hartley; brothers and sisters-in-law, Hans and his wife, Jenny Schneider of Battle Creek, Albert Schneider of Schleswig, and Dorothy Lynn of Chicago; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was also preceded in death by a sister, Frances Abbe; a son-in-law, Paul D. Burton; and a sister-in-law, Kay Schneider.

Lydia Bertha Christina (Odefay) Bechen (1908 - 1989)

Lydia Bertha Christina Bechen, daughter of Fred and Adelia Lapel Odefay, was born Jan. 16, 1908, at Vail, la., and died Aug. 3, 1989, at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital at Cherokee, having reached the age of 81 years, six months and 18 days.

Lydia attended Pleasant Hill School near Vail. In 1919, she moved with her family to Platte, S.D., where she continued her education in the Castalia School system. Later, she worked in various households in the area. In 1930, she returned to Crawford County where she worked at the Steckelberg Hotel in Manilla.

On March 29, 1937, she married John C. Bechen at Denison. The couple farmed in Crawford County until 1970, when they retired and moved into Schleswig. He husband died on May 25, 1982, and Lydia continued to live in Schleswig until 1987, when she moved to Holstein to be near her daughter. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Altar Society of the church in Ida Grove.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sisters, Erma Vogt and Leona Odefay; and two brothers, Alvin and Arlo Odefay.

Survivors include her daughter Sharon and husband, Howard Ehlers of Holstein; three sisters: Mrs. Ellen Bechen of Charter Oak, Mrs. Donald (Hilda) Comstock of Denison, and Mrs. Francis (Vera) Mesenbrink of Manilla; three grandchildren: Patricia and her husband, Wayne Reichter, Gale and her husband, Scott Randall of Storm Lake, and Jodi Ehlers of Holstein; two great-grandchildren, Tara Reichter and Derrick Randall of Storm Lake.

Rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m. Friday with Father E.D. Hoffman at Barker Funeral Home in Holstein. Mass of the Resurection was held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ida Grove with Father Alfred E. McCoy officiating. Organist was Barbara Pfaltzgraff and vocalist, Gene Bechen. Hymns were "How Great Thou Art" and a Reading of the 23rd Psalm. Pallbearers were nephews: Dennis Mesenbrink, Merle Mesenbrink, Craig Mesenbrink, Ladean Bechen, Richard Grell, Dr. Roger Vogt and Darrell Odefay. Interment was in Morgan Township Cemetery at Schleswig.

Lydia Barbara (Christman) Evans (1906 - 2003)

Lydia Barbara Christman Evans was born January 11, 1906, the daughter of Conrad and Rose Heuther Christman. She died Wednesday, October 29, 2003 at the Odebolt Nursing and Rehab Center in Odebolt, Iowa at the age of ninety-seven.

Lydia's parents, who were of German descent, migrated from Odessa, Russia and settled in Bridgewater, South Dakota were Lydia was born. She was baptized in Christ at Plum Creek Church and attended elementary school in Bridgewater.

Lydia was married to Tony Wehner and they were blessed with the birth of four sons, Norman, Jackie, Virgil, and Richard.

Later, she married Andrew Miller and they were blessed with the birth of one son, Gerald Ralph.

On April 3, 1937 Lydia married Robert Glenn Evans, who had four children, Robert, Donald, Marie and Ina. Lydia and Robert were married in Allexandria, South Dakota. They made their home in Ida Grove, Iowa until 1945, when they moved to Schleswig. Two daughters, Millie and Shirley were born to this union.

Lydia loved embroidering, crocheting, gardening and walking. She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig and an active member of their Women's Guild. She was also active in the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.

Lydia was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Tony, Andrew and Robert; five sons, Jackie in early childhood, Norman, Virgil, Richard and Robert; two daughters, Marie arid Shirley; five brothers, Carl, Fred, Emil, Gottlieb and Conrad; four sisters, Rose, Annette, Lillian and Erma.

Survivors include two sons, Gerald Miller and his wife, Mildred of Odebolt; Donald Evans and his wife, Maria of Petersburg, Virginia; two daughters, Millie Lill and her husband, Jaan of Dow City; Ina Knop of Denison; forty grandchildren and many great and great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Monday, November 3, 2003 at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Chris Burtnett officiated the services and grave side rites held at Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Organist Wendy Bumann provided the organ accompaniment for soloist Rubie Kastner as she sang "How Great Thou Art", and for the congregational hymn "In the Garden". Those serving as pallbearers were: Michael Wehner, Henry DeMann, Lyle Fleshner, Charles Campbell, David Bilsten, and Jaan Lill. The family invited everyone in attendance to return to the church and join them in fellowship and lunch served by the Women's Guild. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of the arrangements.

Malinda Margaret (Mohr) Evers (1903 - 2000)

Malinda Margaret Evers was bom at Schleswig, Iowa on March 9, 1903, the daughter of Fred W. Mohr and Mamie Henrietta Mohr, nee Jepsen. She passed away Wednesday, September 13, 2000 at the Eventide Home in Denison where she had been living since May 1992. She attained the age of ninety-seven years and six months.

Malinda was baptized and confirmed in 1918 at Friedens Evangelical Church, German Synod, Schleswig, Iowa. She attended Schleswg High School and graduated with the class of 1920. She attended Grinnell College and obtained a teaching certificate in 1921. She taught in rural schools around Schleswig for four years and worked in the Bernard Evers Store for one year.

Malinda married John H. Evers on June 6, 1926 at the home of her parents. They lived in Onawa and Sioux City before returning to Schleswig in 1931.

Malinda was very active in the United Church of Christ, serving as a Sunday School teacher for fifty years, as Sunday School Superintendent, President and Vice President of the Women's Guild and Dorcas Society, where she especially enjoyed quilting and embroidery. She was a very dedicated and loyal church member.

She also served as an organist for many years. Malinda was a member of the Rebekah Lodge, a fifty year member of the Eastern Star, and a charter member of the Crawford County Hospital Auxiliary, which she helped organize in 1951.

She is survived by son, Everett and wife, May Lou Evers of Schleswig; son Gene and wife, Sally Evers of Spring, Texas; grandson, Mark and wife, Valita Evers of Storm Lake; granddaughter, Jaye and husband, Ed Claussen of Guymon, Oklahoma; granddaughter, Linda and husband, Mike Restivo of Orlando, Florida; grandson, David Evers of Spring, Texas; granddaughter, Catherine and husband, Byron Foreman of Belton, Texas; and eight great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Malinda was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, John, one son, John Fred in infancy, and grandson, Richard Evers.

Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, September 16, 2000 at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Bob Fritzmeier and Rev. Douglas Searles officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Dorothy Jessen provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Keith Christie singing "How Great Thou Art" and congregational hymns "Beyond the Sunset" and "The Old Rugged Cross". Those serving as pallbearers were: Murlin Johannsen, William J. Petersen, Eldo Paulsen, Wayne Lafrentz, Roger Baer and Bill Benson. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to return to the church and join them in fellowship and lunch served by the Women's Guild. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of arrangements.

Mamie I. (Schultz) Hannemann (1900 - 1990)

Mamie I. Hannemann, 89, died Wednesday, January 31, 1990, in a Sioux City hospital after a long illness. Mrs. Hannemann, the former Mamie I. Schultz, was born April 13, 1900, in Crawford County, Iowa. She attended St. Paul's Lutheran School, Hanover Township, Crawford County.

She married Richard Hanemann July 18, 1929, in Ida Grove, Iowa. He died November 1, 1967, in Omaha. She had made her home with her daughter, Pearly Siemer in Sioux City the last 12 years. Prior to that she had lived at Schleswig.

Mrs. Hanemann was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and American Legion Auxiliary, Schleswig.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Loren (Pearly) Siemer of Sioux City; three granddaughters, Mrs. Gerry (Lisa) Lamoureux of Sioux City, Vivian Tabbert of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Mrs. Russ (Roxane) Ingalls of Sioux City; three grandsons, Scott Siemer of Hawarden, Iowa, Bob Hicks of Canada and Bret Hannemann of San Bernardino, California; nine great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one daughter, two sons, one brother and one sister.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 3, 1990 at Immanuel Lutheran Church at Schleswig with the Rev. E. Nelson officiating. Pallbearers were John Hansen, Bruce Hanemann, Kent Jorgensen, Arlen Meseck, Ray Schmidt and Alan Teut. Interment was in Morgan Cemetery, Schleswig.
