Rev. Lamar S. Winter (abt. 1906 - 1966 )

Rev. Lamar S. Winter Dies

Funeral services were held Monday, March 21 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Auburn for the Rev. Lamar S. Winter, 60 who died Saturday morning. Rev. C. W. Schmidt of Denison and Rev. O.E. Weiss officiated.

Rev Winter was a former pastor of the St. John's and Faith Lutheran Churches at Kiron and Deloit. Survivors include his widow, two children, Rev. Donald Winter of Macomb, Illinois and Marlene, Mrs. Milton Giermann of Kiron, four grandchildren, his mother, Mrs. Katie Winter and one brother Paul.

Interment was in the Pocahontas Cemetery at Pocahontas, Mo.

Lena Henrietta Hass (1894 - 1973 )

Funeral services for Lena Henrietta Hass, 79, were held August 22, 1973 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. Rev. Ronald E. Meyer of the trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla officiated. Burial was at the Manning cemetery.

Lena Henrietta Hass, the daughter of Henry C. and Dorthea Rasmussen Clausen, was born on June 7, 1894 in Otter Creek Township in Crawford County. She was married to Julius Hass in 1913. They lived in Aspinwall for three years. They then purchased a farm north of Aspinwall where they made their home until the death of her husband in 1943. She continued the farming operation for another three years with two of their sons and then moved to Manning for her remaining years. Mrs. Hass died August 19 in her sleep in her home in Manning.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one son Marvin, one grandson, three brothers and one sister.

Survivors include six children, Henry of Denison, Melvin of Manning, Mrs. Earl (Laverne) Schmidt, Denison, Lester Hass, Manilla and Merlin Hass, Manning, 23 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

Maud Vivian (Cadwell) Ward (1895 - abt 1964 )

Mrs. Ward, the former Maud Vivian Cadwell, was born Aug. 5, 1895, at Aster, Iowa, and formerly lived in Manning, Manilla and Danbury, Iowa. She was married to Mr. Ward on July 2, 1917, at Falls City, Neb. She was a member of the Methodist Church.

Survivors include the widower; a daughter, Mrs. John Osborne of Houston, Tex.; four sisters, Mrs. Leslie Willson of Mapleton, Mrs. Guy Miller of Carroll, Iowa, and Mrs. Grace Wolff and Mrs. Chris Yeager, both of Council Bluffs, Iowa; three brothers, Willis Cadwell of Sioux City, Vernon Cadwell of Des Moines and Lloyd Cadwell of Manilla, and two grandsons.

The body was taken to the Walter Funeral Home here.

Milton Winters (1914 - 1967 )

Milton Winters dies in Omaha Hospital October 18.

Funeral services for Milton H. Winters, who died October 18, 1967 at an Omaha hospital, were held Friday morning at the United Presbyterian Church in Westside. The organist was Mrs. Harvey Freese, and hymns were sung by B. E. VonGlan, David Freese and Glenn Freese. The following obituary was read by Rev. John H. Middents:

Milton H. Winters, son of Walter Edward Winters and Edith Mae (Mooney) Winters was born August 3, 1914 in Carroll County, Iowa. He attended grade school and high school in Westside, Iowa. He also attended Parks College in Parksville, Mo.

He was united in marriage to LaVon Klocke June 22, 1938, and to this marriage two children were born. They resided in Westside for about one year and then moved to Schleswig where they lived for 25 years. Their present home was in Westside where they have lived for the past five years. While Milton lived in Schleswig, he was active in two bands. The "Harmony Kings" in which he was the conductor and trumpet player, and the "Schleswig Dutchmen." He was also an active fireman in Schleswig for a number of years.

He was preceded in death by his father. He is survived by his wife, LaVon, his mother, Mrs. Edith Mae Winters, one daughter, Karen (Mrs. Kenneth Krayenhagen) of Schleswig; one son, Gary of New Hampton, Iowa. Five grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Eileen Patterson of Edgerton, Kansas and Mrs. Beverly Hix of Schaller, Iowa; other friends and relatives.

The honorary pallbearers were five members of the Schleswig Fire Department when Milton lived in Schleswig: Harlan Buffum, C.H.Claussen, Wayne Kuehl, Edwin Schmadeke, Robert B. Lyon and Werthus Grill.

Otto Wiebers (1896 - 1966 )

Funeral services for Mr. Otto H. Wiebers were held Thursday, May 26, at the United Church of Christ with Rev. R.J. Ratzlaff officiating. Mrs. John Evers organist accompanied Mrs. Ernie Grell and Mrs. Ray Martens who sang "Asleep in Jesus" and "Abide with Me."

Otto H. Wiebers was born on April 16, 1896 at Schleswig-Holstein Germany to Andrew and Dorthea Wiebers.

On February 19, 1919 he was united in marriage to Dora Backhaus at Schleswig. To this union three sons were born; Robert and Ernest of Schleswig and Donald of Sac City.

He was a resident of Crawford County for 57 years and farmed in this area before moving to Schleswig 16 years ago. He was a member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. He died Tuesday morning at his home. He attained 70 years, one month and eight days.

Survivors include his widow Dora, his mother Mrs. Andrew Wiebers of Scottsdale, Arizona and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father and one brother.

Pallbearers were Earl Wiebers, LeRoy Wiebers, P.E. Johannsen, Freddie Backhaus, Burdell Jensen and Edwin Clausen. Honorary pallbearers were Frank Peters, Lenard Kastner, Art Lafrentz, Herbert Miller, Hugo Jensen, Bernhard Jensen and Gilbert Kastner. Interment was in Morgan Cemetery.

Sophie (Rabe) Westphalen (1909 - 1965 )

Funeral services were held Thursday, August 12, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church Hanover Township for Mrs. Edlef Westphalen who died August 10. The choir sang, "What a Friend We Have in Jesus, and the congregation sang, "Jerusalem, Thou City Fair and High." Cynthia Meseck accompanied them on the organ. Rev. C. Pannier read the following obituary:

Mrs. Edlef Westphalen, nee Sophie Alberta Rabe, was born April 27, 1909 at Ute, Iowa to Gustav and Wilemina Schrieber Rabe. She was baptized as an infant and in her youth was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Ute.

On August 23, 1932 she was united in holy matrimony to Edlef Westphalen. Since that time, the couple made its home two miles north of St. Paul's Church, Hanover Township.

To this union were born eight children, three sons and five daughters. Her husband and one daughter, Norene, preceded her in death. She is survived by the following children: Harvey at home; Inez of St Paul, Minnesota; Ardis, Mrs. Russell Fischer of Council Bluffs; Wilma of St. Paul, Minnesota; Larry of Vermillion, South Dakota; Sharon, Mrs. John Kondes of Minneapolis Minnesota; and Russell at home. Also surviving is one brother, Alfred Rabe of Ricketts; nine grandchildren and numerous friends, relatives and acquaintances.

She was a member of St. Paul's Ladies Aid and as such served in different offices. She passed away in her sleep early Tuesday morning, August 10, at the age of 56 years, three months and 14 days.

Pallbearers were Martin Bielow, Bernhardt Jeschke, Arthur Rabe, Darrell Clingenpeel, Walter Kortman, Sr., and Hans Schau. Interment was in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Hanover Township.

Arthur W. Vogt (1909 - 1982 )

Arthur W. Vogt, born in Paradise Township, Crawford County, Iowa on March 19, 1909. He died Dec. 3, 1892 in Los Osos, California.

Arthur, oldest son of Bill and Selma Vogt, was raised and educated in the rural community of Kenwood, Iowa. He married Mildred Olson of Charter Oak on June 27, 1935. They moved to California in 1941.

Art Vogt was well known in California and throughout the West for his pioneering work in the Agricultural Sprinkler Irrigation Industry.

He is survived by his wife Mildred of Los Osos, son William and wife Pat in Porterville, Calif., daughter Karol of San Francisco; three grandchildren: Kevin, Kristin and Billy Vogt; a younger brother, Frank Vogt of Denison; two older sisters, Lulu Gluesing of Culbertson, Mt., and Hulda Coan, of Fremont, Neb.

Memorial services were at Trinity Methodist Church, 490 Los Osos Valley Road, Los Osos, California 93402.

William O. Volquartsen (1920 - 1979 )

William O., son of Bernard and Anna Neethan Volquartsen, was born Feb. 5, 1920, at Dow City. He moved to Manning as a young boy and attended Manning Schools. Bill worked at the Manning Creamery until 1942 when he entered the military service where he served three years in South America.

He was united in marriage with hazel Gessmann on Jan. 14, 1945. This union was blessed with three daughters.

Upon discharge from the service in March, 1945, he worked several years at the Manning Creamery, as a carpenter, and for 10 years at MJM Enterprises, Inc. He was a member of VFW Post 3517.

After being in failing health for over a year, Bill died at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, on Jan. 16, 1979, at the age of 58 years, 11 months and 11 days.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister. Survivors include his wife, Hazel; three daughters: Dianna, Mrs. Larry Kastner, Charter Oak; Darlene, Mrs. John Rasmussen, Manilla; Doris, Mrs. Rex Sebeniecher, Stanton; eight grandchildren: Tamara, Tracy, Patricia, and Erica Kastner; Gene and Eric Rasmussen; Lanette and Jodi Sebeniecher; three sisters: Mrs. Hilda Hammer, Manning; Mrs. Emma Cramer, Manning; Mrs. Ann Jansen, Manning; three brothers: Henry Volquartsen, Arion; Carl Volquartsen, Gresham, Oregon; Paul Volquartsen, manning as well as other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Jan. 19, at 2 p.m., at the Ohde Funeral Home in Manning. Officiating was the Rev. Joel Wright of the Presbyterian Church. Soloist was Mrs. Judy Joens accompanied on the organ by Mrs. Bonita Hagedorn. Interment was in the Manning Cemetery with Military Honors handled by the American Legion Post No. 22, VFW Post 3517. Ohde Funeral Home in Manning is in charge of arrangements.

Edna Marie Vogt (1906 - 1972 )

Edna Marie Vogt was born April 8, 1906 in Paradise Township, Crawford County. She was the daughter of Emil and Helen Fredericks Vogt.

She lived with her parents in Hanover Township and then for 43 years lived in Denison Township. In December 1971 she came to live in Denison. She had been in failing health for the past year and hospitalized at times in Omaha.

On March 21 she was taken to the local hospital and there she passed away on Wednesday night, March 29, 1972.


She is survived by two sisters, Elizabeth, Mrs. Henry Kolls and Minnie Vogt; her brother in law Henry Kolls, her niece and nephew Henry and Marsha Kolls and a grandniece, Barbara Kay Kolls. Her parents preceded her in death.

Her funeral service was held at the Huebner Funeral Home on Saturday afternoon, April 1, with the Rev. Carl W. Schmidt officiating. Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist and solos were sung by Henry Henningsen. Interment was made in the Oakland Cemetery with Norman Christiansen, Herman Haase Jr., Merle Keim, Alfred Kuhlmann, Adam Reisz and Tony Reisz serving as bearers. Huebner Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Erma Dorothy (Odefy) Vogt (1914 - 1975 )

Erma Dorothy Vogt, Charter Oak, daughter of John F. and Adelia Lapel Odefy, was born Dec. 10, 1914, on a farm near Manilla, and died Sept. 27, 1975, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, at the age of 60 years, 9 months, and 17 days.

Mrs. Vogt moved to South Dakota with her parents when a small child. She attended the rural school in South Dakota. In 1911 she returned to Iowa with her parents and lived on a farm near Denison.

On March 8, 1940, she was united in marriage to Frank Vogt in Denison. They settled on a farm near Kenwood, later moving to a farm west of Charter Oak.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, Janice, who died in infancy, two brothers, Elvin and an infant brother, and one infant sister.

Survivors include her husband Frank, one son, Roger and his wife, and a grandson, Saen Allen, four sisters, Lydia (Mrs. John Bechen) of Schleswig, Ellen (Mrs. Leo Bechen) of Charter Oak, Hilda (Mrs. Donald Comstock) of Denison, and Vera (Mrs. Francis Mesenbrink) of Manilla, several nieces and nephews and many friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, Sept. 30, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak with Pastor Albert Prouty officiating. Pallbearers were Merle Mesenbrink, Howard Ehlers, John Christansen, Richard Grill, Ladean Bechen, and Dennis Mesenbrink. Interment was made in Oakland Cemetery, Denison, with Huebner Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Carl J. Paulsen (1905 - 1972 )

Funeral services for Carl J. Paulsen of Ida Grove were held Thursday, September 28, 1972, at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig with the Rev. R.J. Ratzlaff officiating. Becky Ratzlaff, organist, accompanied Mrs. Harlan Buffum and Mrs. Don Meyer as they sang "How Great Thou Art" and "Heaven is My Home."

Carl Johannes Paulsen was born in Morgan Township on April 8, 1905. He was the son of the late Nickolas Paulsen and his wife Julia Eggan. He was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith.

On July 4, 1928 he married Irene Abbe. They farmed in Hayes Township for over thirty-five years. Five years ago they moved to Ida Grove and occasionally Mr. Paulsen worked for the ASC office there. He died Monday, September 25, 1972, at the Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, following a lengthy illness.

Besides his wife, Irene, Mr. Paulsen is survived by one son Roger; a daughter-in-law Shirley Paulsen; three granddaughters Julie Kay, Sharon Lee and Deanne Marie; four sisters Hilda Engelking of Schleswig, Ella Wiedemann of Anthon, Louise Backhaus of Ida Grove and Vernette Stuhr of Rice, Washington; other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by one daughter; two brothers, Albert and Walter; and one sister Leona.

Pallbearers were: Edwin Backhaus, Eldo Paulsen, Alva Wiedemann, Norman Paulsen, Dennis Bruhn and Corvin Teut. Interment was in Morgan Township Cemetery.

Catherine Hermine Petersen (1880 - 1972 )

Mrs. Catherine Petersen passed away at a hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, on Wednesday, February 9, 1972. She was visiting with her son, Ben, and was taken to the hospital on Tuesday, February 8, and died the following afternoon, at the age of 91 years, 6 months and 21 days.

Catherine Hermine Sonnichsen, was the daughter of Hans and Catherine (Nickelson) Sonnichsen. She was born in Schleswig-Holstein Germany on July 19, 1880. At the age of three, she came with her parents to America making her home in Bridgewater, South Dakota, later she came to live in Denison and here was married to John Petersen on February 10, 1904. After their marriage, they lived in and near Denison. Mr. Petersen preceded her in death in 1960.

She was baptized in infancy and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa.

Surviving her death are the following children: Ben of Omaha, Nebraska; Herman of Denison, Iowa; Caroline, Mrs. Everett Buchanan of Dunlap, Iowa; Clara, Mrs. Albert Hollander of Denison, Iowa; Marvin of Denison, Iowa; Mrs. Helen Gold of Oakdale, California; Hertha, Mrs. Henry Schroeder of Manila, Iowa; Mrs. Nellie Petersen of Denison, Iowa; and Edna, Mrs. Carl Fick of Council Bluffs, Iowa; 43 grandchildren and 60 great grandchildren, two brothers Hans Sonnichsen of Remsen, Iowa and Detlef of Bridgewater, South Dakota; and many other relatives and friends.

Preceding her in death were her husband, two daughters, Leona and Hilda and three grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday, February 12, 1972, at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa with Rev. C.W. Schmidt officiating.

Interment was made in Morgan Township Cemetery by Schleswig, Iowa with the following pallbearers: Robert Buchanan, Larry Fick, Clarence Fritz, Arnold Hollander, Roger Schroeder and Frank Vandivort.

Chris A. Petersen (1891 - 1964 )

Chris A. Petersen, the son of Jurgen Petersen and his wife Adeline nee Lorenzen, was born May 1, 1891. He was baptized in early infancy and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith in St Paul's Lutheran Church of Hanover Township. He was married to Minnie Boger on January 29, 1913. After their marriage they farmed in Hanover and Goodrich Townships, coming to make their home in Denison in 1954.

Mr. Petersen became ill on Tuesday night, August 25th, and was taken to the Crawford County Memorial hospital early Wednesday morning where he died at 8:45 that morning.

His death is mourned by his widow, by three sons, August F., Elmer and Louis and one daughter Mrs. Ida Eggert; by fourteen grandchildren, one great grandchild, two brothers: August L. of Denison and Emil of Westside, two sisters, Mrs. Molly Knudsen of Denison and Mrs. Marie Klinker of Colorado Springs, Colorado. One son Merlin and one granddaughter died in infancy. He was also preceded in death by five brothers and one sister.

Mr. Petersen was a voting member of Zion congregation for many years and served on the School Board of the congregation as well as trustee and elder, an office that he held at the time of his death.

The funeral service was held on Friday, August 28, in the Zion Lutheran Church with Rev C.W. Schmidt officiating. Interment was made in the Morgan Township cemetery. The following served as Pallbearers: Robert Christensen, Everett Klinker, Andrew Petersen, Emil Petersen, John Petersen, Lawrence Petersen.

Lizzie (Johannsen) Lafrenz (1888 - 1966 )

Mrs. Lizzie Lafrenz died at the Clarkson hospital in Omaha, Nebr. on May 20 at 6:45 a.m. She had been hospitalized in Denison on May 14 and on May 16 was taken to Omaha where she underwent surgery.

Lizzie Johannsen was the daughter of Dethlef Johannsen and Helena (Petersen) Johannsen. She was born March 7, 1888 in Hanover Township, Crawford County, Iowa where she also grew to womanhood.

She was carried to Henry Lafrenz in 1921 and since that time they resided in the Denison community. Mr. Lafrenz died in 1959 and since that time she made her home with her daughter until taking residence at the Eventide home two years ago.

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Joleen Boeck of Denison, three grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Anna Jepsen and Mrs. Rosa Jensen of Denison. Preceding her in death were her husband, two children, Lester and Darlene, as well as four brothers, August, Louis, Moritz and Andrew and one sister, Mrs. Dora Maack.

Mrs. Lafrenz was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church. She was an active member of the Zion Dorcas Society in Denison.

Funeral services were held at Zion Lutheran church on Monday afternoon, May 23 with the Rev. Carl W. Schmidt in charge of the service. Hymns were sung by the Lutheran Ladies Choir with Mrs. Fred Rabe serving as organist. Interment was in the Morgan township cemetery. Pallbearers were Fred Beeck, Jr., Walter Grell, Earl Hintz, Glen Jensen, Jack H. Jepsen and Henry Schroeder.

Alfred Peter Meggers (1880 - 1966 )

Alfred Peter Meggers, the son of Peter Meggers, and his wife, Magdalene nee Huber, was born July 6, 1880 in Hanover township, Crawford county. In early infancy he was baptized and later confirmed in the Zion Lutheran church in Denison.

He was married to Elizabeth Jaacks on Feb. 17, 1904. After their marriage they lived on farms in Hanover, Goodrich and East Boyer townships, coming to make their home in Denison in 1927. Mrs. Meggers preceded him in death on May 26, 1962. In poor health the past year, Mr. Meggers was taken to the local hospital on May 25 and here he died June 18 at the age of 85 years, 11 Months and 12 days.

He is survived by the following children: Emil and Edward of Denison; Mrs. John (Minnie) Frank of Denison, Mrs. Albert (Edna) Igou of Denison, Mrs. Eddie (Magdalene) Christiansen of Dow City, Mrs. Fred (Irene) Jepsen of Schleswig, Leonard of Dow City, and Mrs. Leonard (Esther) Namanny of Denison; 28 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his wife; one son, Marvin who died in an auto accident in 1952, by two daughters and one son who died in early infancy; also two grandchildren and one great-granddaughter, one sister and two brothers.

Funeral services were held at the Zion Lutheran church on June 21 with the Rev. C. W. Schmidt officiating. Hymns were sung by the Lutheran Ladies choir with Mrs. Fred Rabe serving as organist. Interment was made in the Morgan township cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers: Meinhordt Jaacks, Walter Jaacks, Harry Meggers, John F. Meggers, Pete Meggers and Alfred Sievers.

Josephine Nancy (Teut) Lill (1887 - 1963 )

Mrs. August Lill died at the home of her son, Alva Lill, near Ricketts on Sunday morning, Sept. 29. She had been in ill health for a number of years and bedfast for many months.

Josephine Nancy Teut, a daughter of Peter Teut and Sophie nee Boysen, was born in Soldier township on Jan. 21, 1887. In early infancy she was baptized and later affiliated with the Lutheran church by the rite of. confirmation.

On Feb. 24, 1910 she was married to August Lill, a marriage to which three children were born. After their marriage they farmed in Charter Oak township until coming to make their home in Denison in 1944. Mr. Lill preceded her in death in 1953.

In poor health in recent years, she spent the last two years in the home of her son and family, the Alva Lills near Ricketts.

Her funeral service was held at the Zion Lutheran church on Oct. 1, 1963 with the Rev. Carl W. Schmidt officiating. The Lutheran Ladies choir sang two anthems. Interment was made in St. Paul's Lutheran cemetery in Hanover township. Pallbearers were Harold Eggen, Gordon Nahnsen, Max Nellor, August Pautsch, Donald Teut and Lenhardt Teut.

Surviving are one son, Alva, of Charter Oak, one daughter, Mrs. Viola Bahnsen of Council Bluffs, eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; three brothers, Otto and Albert Teut of Schleswig and Erwin of Ricketts. One sister, Mrs. Stella Hermecke of Holdstein. Her husband, one son, Melvin, and seven brothers and sisters preceded her in death.

Alfred Karl Neubauer (1903 - 1966 )

BATTLE CREEK, Iowa ­-- Special: Funeral services for Alfred Karl Neubauer, 62, long-time farmer in the Battle Creek area, will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. John Lutheran Church here. The Rev. A. E. Alpers will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery under direction of the Christensen Funeral Home.

Mr. Neubauer died Monday after suffering a heart attack while helping shell corn.

He was born March 30, 1903, in Ida County, Iowa. He married Esther Ramm Oct. 17, 1923, at Ida Grove, Iowa. They farmed in Crawford County until 1936, when they moved to the Battle Creek area.

Survivors include the widow, a daughter, Mrs. Melvin Kohles, Anaheim, Calif.; a son, Leslie, Battle Creek; a brother, ???erd, Denison, Iowa and four grandchildren.

Josephine (Kolar) Lapel (1907 - 1965 )

Mrs. Wilbert Lapel died at the Memorial hospital on Wednesday, Nov. 10 at 7:30 in the evening. She had been hospitalized since Sept. 30.

Josephine Kolar, daughter of Joseph and Mary (Mayer) Kolar, was born Dec. 19, 1907 in New York, N. Y. As a child she came with her parents to Maha, Neb. Later they moved to Humboldt, Neb., where she grew to womanhood. She took a course in nurse's training at the Jenny Edmundson hospital in Council Bluffs and graduated in 1931.

She was married to Wilbert Lapel on Oct. 18, 1934. After their marriage they made their home in Denison where Mrs. Lapel followed her profession as nurse for a number of years.

She was baptized in infancy and later affiliated with the Zion Lutheran church of Denison by the rite of confirmation. Funeral services were held on Saturday, Nov. 13 at 1:30 p. m. with the Rev. Carl W. Schmidt officiating. Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist while selections were sung by the Lutheran Ladies choir. Interment was made in Memorial Gardens cemetery. The pallbearers were: John McClellan, Louie Miller, Jack Murphy, Ervin Olberding, Joe Speake and Frank Whitaker.

Surviving her death are the widower, one daughter, Carol Lapel of San Jose, Calif.; her father, Joseph Kolar in St. Petersburg, Fla.; one sister, Mrs. Annie Neutler of Humboldt, Neb., and two brothers Laddie and Charles Kolar of Humboldt, Neb.

Anna Louise (Huber) Miller (1888 - 1963 )

Manning - Funeral services for Mrs. Anna Louise Miller, 75, Manilla, were held Dec. 11 at Trinity Lutheran church in Manilla. Rev. Royal Natzke officiating. Interment was in the Oak Hill cemetery at Irwin.

Daughter of Lorenz and Ernma Nieman Huber, she was born Dec. 31, 1888 at Irwin. She attended schools there and two years at Manning. Later she moved with her parents to a farm four miles east of Defiance.

On June 20, 1906, she married Frank A. Miller, who died Jan. 14, 1961. The couple farmed until moving to Manilla in 1945.

In failing health for several weeks, she died Dec. 8 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Helen Rocksien in Manilla.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and two granddaughters.
She leaves five children, Mrs: Bennett (Faye) Spencer, Seattle, Wash.; Mrs. Rocksien; Mrs. Everett (Eunice) Fay, Canton, Minn.; Mrs. Lois Forrest, Missoula, Mont. and Donald E. of Harlan; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and a brother, John Huber of Harlan.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran church in Manilla and very active in its Ladies Aid.

Carl Meinhard Lorenzen (1887 - 1964 )

Carl Meinhard Lorenzen was born Nov. 21, 1887, in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, the son of Martin and Marianna Lorenzen. He came to America with his parents and brothers in 1902. In his early manhood he worked as a farmhand on various farms in the area.

On June 30, 1925 he was married to Bertha Holst. To this union two children were born. He entered the coal business in 1932 and remained in business until his retirement in 1949. He served on the city council for six years and was a trustee in the Zion Lutheran church for three years.

He suffered a stroke and was taken to the Crawford County hospital on Oct. 30 and died on Oct. 31, 1964.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and five brothers. Survivors include one son, John of Denison and one daughter, Frieda (Mrs. Vincent Schneider) of Denison and six grandchildren.

Services were held on Nov. 2 at Zion Lutheran church in Denison, with Rev. C. Schmidt officiating. Music was furnished by the Ladies choir with Mrs. Fred Rabe as organist. Burial was in the Lutheran cemetery with Maxwell Funeral home in charge. Honorary pallbearers were Rudolph Heide, Edward Lamp, Ferd Neubauer, Max Kropf, Henry Schneider and Edmund Peters. Pallbearers were Henry Braasch, Clifford Bryan, Clarence Denker, Arlo Jensen, Emil Ewoldt and Loius B. Jepsen.

Anna Martha (Plagge) Namanny (1897 - 1977 )

Anna Martha Namanny was born on Oct. 1, 1897 at Charter Oak Township, Crawford County Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Augusta Plagge. She died on Wednesday evening, Aug. 3, 1977 at Crawford County Memorial Hospital at the age of 79.
Anna received her education in the Charter Oak Parochial School. She was baptized and later confirmed into the Lutheran faith.

On Aug. 27, 1916 Anna was united in marriage to John Namanny at Charter Oak. To this union were born a son and a daughter. Together they farmed in Charter Oak township until 1941. Upon their retirement they moved to Charter Oak. Anna's husband John died in January of 1976.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Anna was preceded in death by one grandson, two sisters and five brothers.

Survivors include, a daughter Leona, Mrs. Fred Burr, and a son Elmer, both of Schleswig. Also by one grandchild, one great-grandchild two sisters, Minnie, Mrs. Bill Namanny of Schleswig and Mrs. Hilda Vogt of Charter Oak.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Aug. 6, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, Charter Oak. Burial was made in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery also in Charter Oak. The Rev. Henry W. Friedrich officiated at the services.
Pallbearers included John Kohnekamp, Fritz Blume, Edger Glockzien, Vernon Kuhlmann, William Brockman and Lauren Knutzen. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Charter Oak.

Bertha Wilhelmine (Holst) Lorenzen (1890 - 1964 )

Bertha Wilhelmine Lorenzen was born on Oct. 7, 1890 near Basdorf, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, the daughter of John and Augusta Holst.

She was confirmed in the Lutheran faith in 1905, and came to Wayne county, Nebraska, in May, 1923.

On June 30, 1925, she was united in marriage to Carl Lorenzen in Denison. To this union two children were born. She became ill on Friday evening, March 6, and on Saturday morning was taken to the Crawford County Memorial hospital where she remained a patient until her death on Saturday, March 14.

She is survived by her husband, Carl, two children: John of Denison and Frieda, Mrs. Vincent Schneider, of Denison; six grandchildren and other relatives and friends.She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and five sisters.

Funeral services were held in the Zion Lutheran church, Denison, Tuesday, March 17, 1964. Music was furnished by the ladies' choir, accompanied by Fred Greinke, organist. Pallbearers were: Henry Schneider, Ferd Neubauer, Rudolph Heide, Leonard Fritz, Henry Braasch and Ralph Auen. Interment was in the Lutheran cemetery.

Arnold E. Moeller (1882 - 1963 )

Funeral services for Arnold E. Moeller were held Monday, July 22, 1963, at the United Church of Christ (E & R) in Schleswig. The organist was Mrs John Evers. The duet was sung by Mrs Byron Behrmann and Mrs Ernie Grell. The hymns chosen for the services were "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Abide With Me." Rev. Walter Baumgartner read the following obituary:

Arnold E. Moeller was born in Otter Creek Township, Crawford County, on August 11, 1882. He was the son of the late John C. Moeller and Jessie Grobman Moeller.

His entire life was spent in and around the community of Schleswig. He made his home with his brother, John D. Moeller. He took an active part and interest in local civic and business affairs. He served several years as a volunteer fireman.
Several years ago Mr. Moeller retired to Schleswig, due to ill health. The last few months he was cared for in Saunders Rest-home, where he passed away Saturday July 20, 1963, attaining the age of 80 years, 11 months and 9 days.

Surviving are three brothers: John D. Moeller, Schleswig; Willie H. Moeller, Kiron; and Oscar A. Moeller, Schleswig; and many other relatives and friends.

Martin Oliver Longlee (1906 - 1966 )

Funeral services for Martin Longlee were held Friday, December 9, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, with Rev. F. A. Wiese officiating. The congregation sang "Heaven is My Home" and "Just As I Am."

Martin Oliver Longlee, son of Ole Longlee and Mathilda Amundson, was born November 22, 1906 at Soldier, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at the Soldier Lutheran Church at Soldier.

He was married to Myrtie Grant on August 6, 1930 in Soldier. After their marriage they farmed near Ute, then later moved to Schleswig in 1938 and continued farming there many years until he suffered a stroke in 1962. Being unable to continue his work they moved to the town of Schleswig for several years. In the fall of 1965 they moved to Sioux City. Although his health had been failing for several years he died unexpectedly at his home Monday morning, December 5.

He is survived by the widow, Mrs Myrtie Longlee, three children, Gordon of Sioux City, LaVonne, wife of James Hollander of Sioux City and Twila, wife of David Miller of North Hollywood, California. He is also survived by three brothers, Bennett, Harry, and Elmer all of Soldier, two sisters, Mrs Merena Disrude of Onawa and Edna, wife of Beecher Hillman of Logan, Iowa, a half-sister, Helma, wife of Otto Riggins of Van Nuys, California, and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Edwin and a sister, Leona.

He was a former member of Immanuel Lutheran Church at Schleswig, and recently was transferred to the Calvary Lutheran Church in Sioux City.

His age was 60 years, 13 days. Interment was made at the Morgan Cemetery at Schleswig. Pallbearers were, William Hebb, James Longlee, Harold Longlee, Gale Grant, Arnold Amundson and Lowell Amundson.

Augusta Carolina (Hansen) Neddermeyer (1877 - 1967 )

Funeral services were held at the St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak for Mrs Augusta Neddermeyer on Tuesday, Aug. 15. Rev. E. T. Lange officiated, William Ziesemer, organist accompanied the congregation, who sang "What a Friend We Have In Jesus" and "I'm But a Stranger Here".

Augusta Carolina Neddermeyer was born on November 25, 1877 in Hanover Township. She was the daughter of Carl Hansen and Elizabeth, nee Rademacher Hansen.

On February 22, 1900 she was married to Marvin Neddermeyer. They farmed around the Charter Oak area until 1943 when they moved into Charter Oak. She was baptized in the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hanover Township on March, 1879. She was confirmed in the same church on March 22, 1891 by Rev. A. Amstein.

She is survived by four sons, Carl, Herbert, Ervin and Adolph of Charter Oak; three daughters, Mrs. August Nemitz (Edna) of Denison, Mrs. Alva Lill Sr. (Erna) of Charter Oak and Mrs. J. W. Iverson (Esther) of Schleswig. She is also survived by 21 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren and one sister, Emma Neddermeyer of Charter Oak.

She died on August 13 after a lingering illness. She attained the age of 89 years, 8 months and 19 days.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin on December 11, 1953, her parents, four children, Ernest, Chris, Marvin and one infant; and two sisters.

Pallbearers were, Alva Lill Jr., Allan Neddermeyer, Gailen Neddermeyer, Kenneth H. Nemitz, Milfred Nemitz and Robert Stoltze. Interment was made in the St. John Lutheran cemetery at Charter Oak.

Floyd Edwin Leaders (1900 - 1965 )

Floyd Edwin Leaders, Sr., son of Henry and Mary Mauer Leaders was born at Minden On July 13, 1900.

He died at his home in Denison on Aug. 16, at the age of 65 years, one month and three days.

On Dec. 25, 1925, he was married to Jessie Ransom. Shortly thereafter they moved to Deloit, where they lived until 1948 when they moved to Denison.
They were the parents of a son, Floyd, Jr.

For a number of years he has been an invalid. He was a member of the Deloit Methodist Church until moving to Denison and transferring his membership to this church.

Survivors include his wife, and son, Floyd, Jr., and one granddaughter, Terra Lynn, who lives in Kansas City; two brothers, Alfred and Edward, who live in Council Bluffs; three sisters, Mrs. Celia Matthieson of Muleshoe, Tex., Mrs. Eda Franz of Avoca and Mrs.Lydia Kay of Oakland.

Funeral services were held the First Methodist church, Aug. 19 at 2 p.m., with Rev. W. O. Peterson and Dr. John V.. Madison officiating. Pallbearers were Guy Argotsinger, Curtis Cose, Mervin Cose, E. L. Fink, Earl Harvey and Eldridge Winey. Interment was in Garden of Devotions, Crawford Heights Memory Gardens.

William Barney Mundt (1896 - 1965 )

Services were held Tuesday for Barney William Mundt, 68, retired Denison farmer, at the Zion Lutheran church. The Rev. Carl Schmidt officated. Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist and the Lutheran Ladies choir sang.

He is survived by his wife, Katharine, one son, Robert, of Boulder Colo., one sister, Mrs. Lulu Lenz. Denison, one brother, Reiney, Denison, and three grandchildren.

Interment was in the Memorial Gardens cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers: L.A. Bockelmann, Roland Borgstahl, Walter Listamann, William Mullenger, Sr., Jack Rademacker, William Schnei???

Barney William Mundt was born Nov. 13, 1896 in Nishnabotny Township to Mr. and Mrs. William Mundt. He lived in Crawford county and operated the parental farm until he retired in 1944.

He was married to Clara Lenz in 1918 and to this union one son, Robert, was born. On April 11, 1952, he married to Katharine Geith. His parents and twin sisters preceded him in death.

Elsie (Christiansen) Miller (1897 - 1964 )

Elsie Christiansen, daughter of Samuel N. and Anna J. Christiansen, was born Jan. 19, 1897, in Paradise Township, Crawford County, Iowa.

She received baptism on June 20, 1897 by Pastor Runge. Mrs. Miller was confirmed in the Christian Faith by Pastor Rinne, in 1942. She attended the rural public school in the community in which she was born, where she completed her elementary education. Later she attended the Denison Normal College.

She was united in marriage to Albert Miller on Jan. 30, 1917. To this union two children were born: namely, Ruby and Rodney. Mr. and Mrs. Miller resided on their farm home two and one-half miles southeast of Schleswig most of their married life, moving into their present home in Schleswig on January of 1964.

Mrs. Miller's last illness covered several months, and was taken to the Crawford County Memorial hospital Oct. 22, where she died Oct, 27 at 10:30 p. m., at the age of 67 years, 9 months and 8 days.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her daughter, Ruby, and two brothers, Fred and Henry Christiansen. She is survived by her husband, Albert, son, Rodney, of LaHabra, Calif.; five grandchildren, one great grandchild; three sisters, Louise, Mrs. Otto Evers, Denison; Anna, Mrs. Paul Baer, Schleswig; Helen, Mrs. Morris Riddle, Whittier, Calif.; three brothers, George Christiansen, Denison; Lewis and Ben Christiansen, Lander, Wyo.

Barney E. Neubaum (abt 1909 - 1970 )

Barney E. Neubaum, 61, passed away at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital Monday morning, April 27, 1970. Funeral services will be Thurs., April 30 at 10:30 a.m. at the Immanual Lutheran Church in Schleswig with burial in the Crawford Heights Memory Garden.

He is survived by his wife Ella, two daughters, Mrs. Kerry (LaJune) Smith of Las Cruces, New Mexico; and Mrs. Merlin (Donna) Joens of Council Bluffs, two sons, Robert of Schleswig and Gary of Nashville, Tennessee; one sister, Mrs. Laverna Graybill of Escalon, California, five brothers, Marvin and Bud of Denison; Arthur of Modesto, California; Edgar of Oakdale, California; and M Sgt. Ernest of Cherry Point, North Carolina.

The body will lie in state in the Maxwell Funeral Home in Denison till 9:00 a.m. Thursday when it will be brought to the Immanual Lutheran Church in Schleswig where friends may call till the time of the service.

Frederick William Linke (1889 - 1971 )

Frederick William Linke, 81, longtime prominent resident of the Ute vicinity, died Wednesday, March 10, at an Omaha hospital. Funeral services were held March 13 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church with Rev. E.T. Lange officiating. Burial was in Grant Township Cemetery near Schleswig with the Walter Funeral Home of Ute in charge. Pallbearers were: Steve Linke, Aaron Gosch, Raymond Gosch, Wm Lawless, Francis Lloyd and Wm Pullen.

Mr. Linke was born October 16, 1889 in Germany. He came to the United States at the age of 14 settling at Denison.

He married Minna Aldag on January 15, 1913 at Schleswig. They moved to a farm near Ute in 1921, where they lived until 1951 when they moved into town.

He was a school director of St. Clair Township for many years. He was a maintenance man for Monona County for many years. He was manager and president of the Berne Co-op Lumber Association. He was a past justice of the peace in Ute. He was president of the Ute Independent Telephone Association. He was an elder of St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Survivors include the widow; two daughters, Mrs. John Gosch of Ute and Mrs. William Knight of Omaha; two sons, Harvey of Osceola, Iowa, and Delano of Omaha; 15 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Harry Jess and Mrs. Raymann Bielenberg, both of Schleswig.

Carl J. Neddermeyer (1901 - 1979 )

Carl Neddermeyer, 78, of Charter Oak, died Wednesday, May 30. 1979, in a Sioux City (Iowa) hospital. Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 1, 1979, in St. John Lutheran Church at Charter Oak. The Rev. Robert Leege officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mr. Neddermeyer was born February 8, 1901, at Charter Oak. He was reared on a farm near Charter Oak and attended rural schools and St. John Lutheran School.

He married Anna Greve February 22, 1925, at Charter Oak. After marriage, they farmed near Charter Oak. He was a Crawford County Supervisor from 1954 until 1963.

Survivors include the widow; one daughter, Mrs. Robert (Elaine) Stoltze of Ute; one son, Marvin of Reno, Nevada, eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ervin and Adolph, both of Charter Oak and one sister, Mrs. August (Edna) a Nemitz of Denison.

George Arnold Moeller (1916 - 1971 )

Funeral services for George Moeller were held Saturday morning, July 10, 1971 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig with Rev. F.A. Wiese officiating. Mrs. Ray Schmidt was the organist. The Immanuel Lutheran Choir sang "Just As I Am" and the congregation sang "Rock of Ages".

George Arnold, son of John D. Moeller and his wife Frieda Jensen, was born in Crawford County on April 16, 1916. He grew up in the Schleswig community, graduating from the Schleswig High School. He entered military service in August 1941 and was later given a medical discharge.

He was married to Elvera Schultz on September 1, 1944 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. The couple farmed northwest of Schleswig. He died at his home on Thursday, July 8, 1971. He attained to 55 years, 2 months and 22 days.

He was preceded in death by his mother two children, Larry and Connie; and his brother, Hugo.

Survivors include: his widow, Elvera; four children, Dennis, Louis, Marc and Carla; his father, John D. Moeller of Schleswig; two sisters, Mrs. Walter Jaacks of Denison, and Mrs. Leslie Henrichsen of Charter Oak; and one brother, John H. Moeller of Schleswig.

Honorary pallbearers were: Tom Flagge, Phillip Rabe, Marlow Schultz, Willis Jaacks, Louis Schmadeke and Raymond Schmadeke. Pallbearers were: LeRoy Bumann, Leonard Hollander, Marino Kuhlmann, Robert Bumann, Rawlo Kastner and Ray Kruse.
Military Honors were provided by the American Legion Post No. 645 and the V.F.W. Post No. 3930 of Schleswig. Interment was in Morgan Township Cemetery.

B. Jean Metcalf (1893 - 1971 )

Funeral services for Miss B. Jean Metcalf were held on Monday, June 14, 1971 at the First Methodist Church in Dow City with Rev. C. M. Morrison officiating. Mrs. Charles J. Smith was the organist. Miss Lindsay Sinn sang "Oh God, Our Help in Ages Past".

B. Jean Metcalf, daughter of Eugene Metcalf and Eva nee Kelsey, was born on October 18, 1893 at Estherville, Iowa. She was educated in the Smithland and Dow City schools, attended Denison Normal College, University of Northern Iowa at Cedar Falls, and Drake University.

She studied music in New York City for five years, conducted her own music studio for fifteen years teaching voice and piano, and served forty-six years as an educator in elementary schools in Crawford County. She was a member of the Methodist Church held a lifetime membership in the Iowa Teachers Association, and was a member of the Rebecca Lodge.

She is survived by cousins, and was preceded in death by her parents.
Pallbearers were: Tim Petersen, Larry Abbe, Scott Ernst, Bradley Riessen, Michael Korner and Dennis Bartels. Interment was in the Dow City Cemetery.

Robert H. Miller (1894 - 1970 )

Funeral services were held Friday, January 2, 1970 at 10:30 a.m. for Robert H. Miller who passed away on December 29, 1969 at 11:45 p.m. at Crawford County Hospital following a lingering illness.

He was born in Crawford County on December 9, 1894, and he had reached the age of 75 years, 20 days. He was the son of the late Hans Miller and his wife Kate nee Jochims.

On June 9, 1920, he was married to Hattie Mohr. They would have observed their golden wedding anniversary this coming June. They farmed in the Schleswig area until moving to Denison 27 years ago when Mr. Miller worked for the railroad for a time.

Survivors include his wife and two children, Ray R. of Ida Grove, and Ruby, Mrs. Arthur Nelson of Denison. Also 8 grandchildren and one great-grandchild, a brother, Charlie of Schleswig; two sisters, Mrs. Mirl Kuehl of Charter Oak and Hil Jepsen of Omaha, and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Anna Boysen and one brother Alec Miller.

Mr. Miller was a veteran of World War I and military honors were given by Denison American Legion Post No. 8.

The Rev. R. J. Ratziaff officiated at the services, and organist Mrs. Fred Rabe accompanied Mrs. Ellen Bruggeman as she sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Abide With Me." Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery.

Elva (Ullrich - Joens) Michaelsen (1901 - ? )

Elva Ullrich Michaelsen, daughter of Claus and Catherine Bielfeldt nee Joens was born at Boone, Iowa October 7, 1901. She was baptized in Hanover Lutheran church and was confirmed by Rev. Frese at Denison Lutheran church.

December 5, 1920 she was united in marriage to William Ulrich. To this union were born eight children. They lived south of Schleswig until the death of her husband, when she moved to Schleswig and had a restaurant there.

She is preceded in death by her husband William who died May 23, 1950, three children, Lois died at age 7, two sons Robert and Eugene died in infancy, her parents, one brother, and one sister.

She was united in marriage to Roy Michaelisen August 2, 1954. They made their home in Holstein. Mrs Michaelsen was a Nurses Aide at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home.

She was killed instantly when the car driven by her husband missed an intersection and went into the ditch May 19.

She is survived by her husband Roy, five children (Lorraine) Mrs Harry Gierstorf Schleswig, Delbert Ulirich of Sioux City, Bill Ullrich of Sioux City, Bill Ullrich of Arthur, (Helen) Mrs. Robert Kirlin of Council Bluffs and Donald Ullrich of Kiron; one sister, Mrs Christine Kruse of Denison; 19 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; three step children, Wayne Michaelsen of Holstein, Wendell Michaelsen of Ida Grove, (Delores) Mrs Dale Meyer of Holstein besides many cousins, nephews. and nieces.

Funeral services were held at St. Paul Lutheran church at Holstein, May 22, with Rev. Fredrick Wiese of Schleswig officiating. Interment was in Morgan township cemetery near Schleswig with the following pallbearers: Allan Gierstorf, James Ullrich, Kyle Ullrich, Robert Kirlin, Jr., Doyle Ullrich and Dudley Ullrich.

Born May 1, 1901, Hanover Township. Married Hilda Pruel Feb. 23, 1927, at Charter Oak. Farmed in Charter Oak and Vail vicinity until 1964 when he retired and moved to Denison.

Loyal F. Miller (1922 - 1971 )

Graveside services for Loyal F. Miller, 49, a native of Denison who died in Albia on Tuesday, will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Lutheran Cemetery in Denison.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Albia. The Geyer-Lewis Funeral Home in Albia is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Miller died Tuesday evening after suffering a heart attack while playing golf at the Albia Country Club. He had been employed since 1967 as advertising manager for the Albia Newspapers, Inc. Prior to that time he had managed the United Food Store in Albia and had been with the Safeway organization for 13 years including several years in Denison and six years as manager of the Oskaloosa Safeway Store.

Mr. Miller was born in Denison on August 22, 1922, the son of the late Louis H. Miller and Anna Kahl Miller. He graduated from Denison high school in 1940 and served in the South Pacific during World War II.

Mr. Miller was married to the former Lucille Ball of Denison on March 3, 1944. He is survived by his wife; two sons, Staff Sergeant Bruce Miller stationed at Moron Air Force Base in Spain, and Staff Sergeant James Miller stationed at Offutt Air Force Base near Omaha; a daughter, Mrs. Edward (Lynn) Baumeister of Albia ; three grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Earl Hiller of Charter Oak; and a brother, Clarence A. Miller of Denison.

Mr. Miller was active in several Albia organizations including the American Legion and Lions Club and he served on the board of directors of the Albia Country Club. Maxwell Funeral Home is in charge of Denison arrangements.

Oscar Amus Moeller (1894 - 1969 )

Funeral services for Oscar Moeller were held, Monday, June 2 at the Immanuel Lutheran in Church, Schleswig, Iowa with Rev. F. A. Wiese officiating. Mrs. Everett Gronau was the organist. The congregation sang, "Rock of Ages" and the choir sang "I'm but a Stranger Here."

Oscar Amus Moeller, son of John Moeller and his wife Marie Hollander was born on the 19th of April 1894 in Crawford County. He grew up on a farm east of Schleswig.

After his marriage to Elsie Baker on January 28th, 1920, the couple moved to Schleswig. For a number of years, Oscar ran a taxi service and also operated the Standard Oil Station. After that he was the Schleswig Street and Water Commissioner for some 16 years.

His wife Elsie died in 1960 after a lingering illness. Five years ago, Oscar had a stroke and was bed-fast since that time. He died on Memorial Day. He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran congregation for over 40 years.

He is survived by his two sons Orrin and Palmer, both of Schleswig. Three grandchildren Ross, Terri, and Scott. Two brothers, John D. Moeller of Schleswig and William of Kiron. His mother-in-law Henrietta Baker who helped care for him, and Barbara, wife of Palmer. He attained to 75 years, 1 month, and 11 days.

The Pallbearers were John Jakso, Otto Keller, Herbert Rickert, Walter Petersen, Johannes Bottger, Arthur Hollander. Interment was in the Morgan Cemetery.

Fred Martin Mohr (1894 - 1967 )

Funeral services for Fred Mohr were held Tuesday at the Immanuel Lutheran church. The choir sang, "Be Still My Soul" and the congregation, "Nearer My God to Thee." They were accompanied on the organ by Mrs. Everett Gronau. Rev. F. A. Wiese read the following obituary:

Fred Martin Mohr, son of August Mohr and Christena nee Fadschild, was born in Morgan Township on September 20, 1894. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hanover Township.

He was in the garage business at Ute and Moorhead for some 20 years. After that he farmed for 25 years southwest of Schleswig.

He was married to Henrietta Marten on June 6, 1929 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Ute. In 1965, the couple retired to Denison.

His health had not been too good the past few years, and he died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital on Sunday, December 31st. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig, since 1942.

He is survived by his widow Henrietta, Mr. and Mrs. Roger Mohr and three sons of Vail, Mr. and Mrs. James Mohr of St. Paul, Minn., and one sister Emma, wife of Dan Clausen of Schleswig. He attained to 73 years, 3 months and 11 days.

Burial was made in the Morgan cemetery. The pallbearers were: Loren Hopp, Arthur Wulf, Gilbert Nihsen, Merrill Lyman, Harry Gierstorf and Cyrenus Petersen.

Anena (Baeth) Miller (1886 - 1967 )

Funeral services were held Saturday, July 15, 1967 for Anena Miller with Rev. R. J. Ratzlaff officiating, at the United Church of Christ. Mrs. John Evers, organist, accompanied Mrs. Ernie Grell and Mrs. Ray Martens who sang "The Lord Is My Shepherd" and "What A Friend We Have In Jesus."

Mrs. Miller (nee) Baeth was born September 8, 1886 in Crawford County. Her father was Hans D. Baeth and mother, Catherine Petersen Baeth.

She was married to Charles Miller February 12, 1907 in Crawford County. To this union three children were born, a son Herbert of Schleswig, a daughter Mrs. Donald (LaRue) Terry of Storm Lake and a daughter Alice, Mrs. Carl Bielenberg.

She was proceeded in death by her parents, her husband, one daughter Alice (Mrs Carl Bielenberg) and two infant children.

She is survived by 6 brothers Louis of Moorhead; John and Charles of Schleswig; Peter of Seattle, Wash; Robert and Harvey of California; two sisters Amanda Johnson of Stanley Wis., Emma Johannsen of Correctionville. Twelve grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

She was a member of the United Church of Christ and a member of Pairs and Spares of the church. She passed away after a lingering illness at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital on July 12, 1967 and had attained the age of 80 years and 4 months.

Interment was made in the Morgan Cemetery with Roger Baer, Larry Miller, Wayne Miller, Melvin Miller, Glen Hofmeyer, and Dale Bielenberg serving as pallbearerers.

Ernest Voss (1896 - 1978 )

Ernest Voss was born on May 30, 1896 in Goodrich Township, the son of Ernest and Rosa Rath Voss. He died Febr. 3 1978 at Crawford County hospital, Denison, at the age of 81. Ernest was raised on a family farm. in rural Denison and attended the rural schools of the area. He then farmed in Minnesota for a number of years.

On Febr. 19, 1919 he was united in marriage with the former Emma Carstens, and together moved to the Denison area and farmed at various farms in this area until retiring in 1954. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters.

Survivors include his wife Emma, one son Merlin Voss, of Onawa, and one daughter Eunice, Mrs. James Buchholz of Carroll. Also by six grandchildren and seven-great grand-children, two brothers, John of Denison and Paul of Schleswig, and one sister, Lillian, Mrs. Ben Boeck of Denison.

Funeral services: were held Febr. 6 at 10 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig.

Charles Arthur Naab (1898 - 1976 )

Charles Arthur Naab, son of Peter and Anna Maier Naab, was born on a farm in Effingham Co., Ill. on Oct. 28, 1898 and died Saturday, Jan. 24, 1976 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, having reached the age of 77 years, 2 months and 27 days.

Mr. Naab was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and received his education in the Effingham Co. Schools.

July 18, 1926 he was united in marriage to Sophie Mesenbrink of Denison and to this union three daughters were born. They made their home on a farm in Goodrich Township until 1952 at which time they moved to Denison where Mr. Naab was employed at Lauridsens Creamery for four years.

He then was employed by the Denison Public Schools as custodian until retiring when he was 65 years of age. He was caretaker of Washington and Union Park several years after retiring and the past years he worked at various jobs in the community.

Mr. Naab was preceded in death by his parents, and four brothers, Adam, Ernest, Clarence and William.

Survivors include his wife Sophie, three daughters - Ruby, Mrs. Eugene Bagwell of Denison; Donna, Mrs. Albert Perkins of Melbourne, Flor., Lynda, Mrs. William Greene of Ames, six grandchildren, six great grandchildren, four brothers, Ervin of Ute, Arthur of Charter Oak , Fred of Chokio, Minn., Louis of St. Jacobs, Ill., three sisters - Mrs. Minnie Bohakel of Chicago, Ill., Mrs. Kathryn Kastner of Marine, Ill., Hilda, Mrs. Harold Jackson of Highland, Ill. Several nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 27, at the Huebner Funeral Home with Pastor Robert Maschke officiating. Mrs. Dorothy Norman served as organist and Henry Henningsen sang ."How Great Thou Art" and "Rock of Ages". Pallbearers were Vernon Watje, Larry Berner, Ronald Paulsen, Clarion Greene, Dale Zea, and Clarion Greene and, Robert Paup. Honorary pallbearers were Robert Carlson, Jerry Meeves and Dennis Schraeder. Interment was made in the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison.

Dr. Harold Vosgerau (1911 - 1981 )

Dr. Harold Vosgerau was born Aug. 17, 1911, at Denison, Iowa, the son of Otto and Margarethe Boettger Vosgerau. On Dec. 10, 1911, he was baptized at the Zion Lutheran Church and on April 11, 1928, was confirmed into the Lutheran Faith at the same church. Doc attended gradeschool at Denison and was graduated from the Denison High School with the class of 1932. He furthered his education at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, where he graduated from the College of Dentistry there in 1938. He then served a one year internship at the St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha before returning to Denison in 1940 to begin his lifetime practice here.

In 1944, Doc entered the United States Army and served for a year and a half during World War II in the 309th General Hospital on Tinian. After his discharge from the service, Doc returned to Denison and his practice.

On Jan. 20, 1946, he was united in marriage with Lois Moeller at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. They made their home in Denison where their two children Douglas and Deborah were born. Doc continued his practice in Denison and a few years ago he semi-retired so he could pursue and enjoy his hobbies more which included hunting, fishing, and spending time at their summer home at Lake View.

Doc went to the St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha, Neb., March 11, 1981, and it was there that his death occurred April 15, 1981. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 69 years, 7 months, and 28 days.

He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, the American Legion Post 8, Denison, the Southwest Iowa Dental Society, and a former member of the Crawford County Dental Association.

Doc was preceded in death by his father, Otto, his son, Douglas, who died in infancy in 1949, and one sister, Lucille Vosgerau in 1956.

He is survived by his wife, Lois of Denison, one daughter, Deborah Vosgerau of Denver, Colo., his mother Margarethe Vosgerau of Eventide in Denison, and other friends.

Funeral services were held at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, at 10:30 a.m., April 18, 1981, with the Rev. Jack D. Heck officiating. Comfort in music was provided by Henry Henningsen as soloist and Mrs. Fred Rabe as organist.
Honorary pallbearers included George P. Berry, D.D.S., Richard E. Drennen, D.D.S., Reiny Mundt, Wilbur Zitzlsperger, Freddie Fuller, R.E. Franck, Vern Cooper, Joseph G. Vaage, H.H. Jenkins, Herbert Klinker, James Lodwick, Vincent Brummer, Don Sessions, and Albert Bartholomew. Pallbearers included Jack Trumbull, D.J. Ellis, Arthur Boettger, Mearl Luvaas, Virgil Magill and W.L. Mullenger. Burial was in the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. The Maxwell Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Donna Lou (Baker) Meyers (1947 - 1967 )

Mrs. Robert Meyer, the former Donna Lou Baker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lynnel Baker of Kiron was born April 30, 1947 at Carroll, Iowa. She was baptized as an infant in the St. John's Lutheran Church, Stockholm Township. She was instructed and confirm into the Lutheran faith at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. She attended grade school and high school in Schleswig.

On March 7, 1965 she was united in marriage to Robert Raymond Meyer of Schleswig. To this union 2 children were born, a daughter Dureen and a son Mark.

Mrs. Meyer was killed in a car accident near Spencer on September 13, 1967 at the age of 20 years, 4 months and 13 days.

Survivors include her husband, her two children, her parents and a brother, Dale, her grandparents, Mrs. Arthur Maak of Kiron and Mrs. Mabel Engel.

At the time of her death she was a member of the Bethel Luthoran Church in Kiron from where funeral services were held Friday afternoon, September 15th, with Rev. J. Elmer Dahlgren officiating. A ladies quartet, Mrs. Wallace Bergren; Mrs. Richard Johnston, Mrs. James Wangler and Delores Wangler sang "Rock of Ages" and "I'm But a Stranger Here" accompanied by Mrs. Robert Byers, organist. The congregation sang "Where Is The Glory." Pallbearers were Frank Berg, Don Herbold, C. E. Dahl, Bayard Johnson, Bill Nelson Jr., and Fred Kollbaum, members of the Bethel Church Council. Interment was in the Bethel Cemetary.

John Detrick Voss (1890 - 1981 )

John Detrick Voss was born on March 31, 1890 in Goodrich Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the son of Ernest and Rosa Rath Voss. He died on Monday afternoon, January 5, 1981, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, Iowa, at the age of 90.

John was baptized as an infant and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Zion Lutheran Church. He spent his early years on a family farm. He received his formal education in the rural schools near his home.

On December 19, 1917, John was united in marriage to Hanna Jurgensen at Charter Oak, Iowa. They made their home on the Voss home place where John farmed for 47 years before retirement. Since his wife's death in 1968 he has continued to make Denison his home.

In addition to his parents and his wife, John was preceded in death by seven brothers and seven sisters.

Survivors include, two sons, Erwin of Schleswig and Gilbert of Storm Lake, one daughter, Maxine, Mrs. Leslie Kruger of Denison. Also by twelve grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, one brother Paul of Schleswig and one sister, Lillian, Mrs. Ben Boeck of Denison.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, January 8, 1981, at 10:30 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Denison, Iowa. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. The Rev. Jack Heck officiated at the services. Serving as pallbearers were Dennis Van Sickler, John R. Voss, Daniel Voss, David A. Voss, Lodean Voss, and Paul Young.

Dora Louisa Johanna (Helmday) Meggers (1876 - 1965 )

Mrs. Dora Meggers passed away in her home in Denison on Feb. 10 at 7:30 a. m. She was born Dora Louisa Johanna Helmday, Oct. 27, 1876, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Johann Helmday in Hanover, Germany. At the age of six she came to America with her mother making her home in Crawford County.

On Jan. 29, 1902 she was married to Frank W. Meggers and to this marriage four children were born. They farmed in Hanover Township and July 4, 1913 Mr. Meggers was claimed by death. Mrs. Meggers remained on the farm until 1934 when she came to make her home in Denison.

Mrs. Meggers was baptized in infancy and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith. At the time of her death she was a member of the Zion Lutheran church in Denison and, here, her funeral service was held on Feb. 12 at 3 p. m. with the Rev. Carl W. Schmidt officiating. Hymns were sung by the Lutheran Ladies choir with Mrs. Fred Rabe serving as organist. Interment was made in the Morgan Township Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Delaine Listamann, Donald Listamann, Erwin Listamann, Walter Listamann, Gilbert Moeller, Arlen Petersen.

Surviving her death are two daughters, Mrs. Lillian Listamann and Anna Meggers of Denison; two sons, Harry and John of Denison; seven grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. One son, Julius preceded her in death in 194?

Marvin H. Voss (1917 - 1982 )

Marvin H. Voss was born on Jan. 2, 1917 in Goodrich Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the son of Chris and Anna Arp Voss. He died on Wednesday afternoon May 26, 1982 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital Denison, Iowa at the age of 65 after a long illness.

Marvin was baptized as an infant and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Zion Lutheran Church. He spent his early years on a family farm. It was in the rural schools near his home, that Marvin received his formal education.

On Feb. 4, 1940, Marvin was united in marriage to Ardell Bauer in Buck Grove, Iowa, Together, they farmed in the Denison Community for many years. In 1973, they moved to Denison where Marvin was employed with the West Central Iowa Sheltered Workshop. During his years on the farm, Marvin drove bus for the Denison Community Schools for fourteen years. Marvin was a life long member of Zion Lutheran Church. He was a member of the Zion Men's Club and the Couples Club.

In addition to his parents, Marvin was preceded in death by one brother Vernon. Survivors include, his wife, Ardell of Denison, one daughter Carol and her husband Roger Walde of Denison, one son Larry and his wife Kay Voss of Denison, seven grand-children, Lynette Walde, Colleen Walde, Karla Kaye Walde, Kevin Walde and his wife Karla Sue, Chad Voss, Ryan Voss and Andrew Voss. and one great grandchild, Justin Lee Walden. Also surviving is his mother-in-law, Mrs. Minnie Bauer of Denison and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Friday, May 28, 1982 at 2:00 p.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. The Rev. Jack D. Heck officiated at the services. Serving as pallbearers were Vernon Neumann, Walter Petersen, Melvin Osterlund, Dennis Schmidt, Donald Waderich and John Hogan. Honorary pallbearers were Lester Anderson, Herschel Gabrielson, Harvey Neumann, Walter Boehm, Robert, Arnold and Gilmer Anthony.
Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison, Iowa.

Minnie A. (Boeck) Voss (1894 - 1975 )

Minnie Voss of Denison, daughter of Thomas and Catherina Haggo Boeck, was born Feb. 25, 1894, in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, and died March 27, 1975 at Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison at the age of 81 years.

Mrs. Voss attended school in Germany and came to the United States in 1926, settling in Crawford County. She became a United States citizen in 1952.

She was joined in marriage to Christian F. Voss in Denison on Dec. 6, 1939. The couple settled on a farm northwest of Denison where they farmed until moving to Denison in 1954. Mr. Voss died in September, 1968. Mrs. Voss continued to make her home in Denison. She was a faithful member of the Zion Lutheran Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Christian. Survivors include her step-son, Marvin, two grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, a brother, Johannas Boeck of Germany, and a sister, Dora Gaeversen, also of Germany.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 29, at 2:00 p.m. in the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, with Pastor C.W. Schmidt officiating. Pallbearers were Virgil Boeck, William Luth, Erwin Voss, Merlin Voss, Russell Boeck and Elmer Maak. Interment was in Morgan Township Cemetery, Schleswig, with Huebner Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Ernest Edward Nemitz (1906 - 1977 )

Ernest Edward Nemitz was born on May 12, 1906 at Soldier Township, the son of William and Matilda Nemitz. He died one June 28, 1977 at Crawford County Memorial Hospital after a long illness at the age of 71.

As a young man Ernest received his education from the Hanover Parochial School. On June 24, 1906 he was baptized and on March 28, 1920 he was confirmed into the Lutheran faith.

On Feb. 15, 1931 Ernest was united in marriage to Agnes Garbe at Charter Oak. To this union were born three children. Together they lived and farmed in Crawford County. Ernest retired in August 1968.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one son, Phillip in September 1954.

Survivors include, his wife Agnes of Charter Oak, one son James of Denison, one daughter Lois Igou of Denison and four grandchildren. Also by two brothers, Walter of Omaha and William of Storm Lake, by two half brothers, Alvin Hargens of Ricketts and Louis Hargens of Charter Oak and by three half sisters, Elenor Meggers of Charter Oak, Esther Wood of Denver, Colo. and Dorthea Henkel of Ricketts.

Funeral services were held on Friday, July 1, at 1:30 p.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hanover Township. Burial was in the Church Cemetery. The Rev. Dale Werling officiated at the services. Pallbearers were nephews Vernon Nemita, Louis Hargens, Glen Henkel, Richard Meyer, Rick Garbe and Jack Hargens. Honorary pallbearers were neighbors, Martin Thies, Martin Schnoor, Martin Biebow, Henry Meseck, Alva Lill and Ralph Vogt. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Charter Oak.
