Bernhard Friedrichsen (1897 - 1978)

Bernhard Friedrichsen was born Jan. 21, 1897 near Kiron, Iowa, the son of Fred and Rosa Bielenberg Friedrichsen. He died Nov. 29, 1978, at his home in Denison at the age of 81.

Ben was raised on a farm near Kiron where he attended the rural schools for his formal education. He was baptized and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Zion Lutheran Church, Denison.

On Sept. 21, 1922 he was united in marriage to Rosie Boysen at her family home near Kiron. Together they farmed in the Kiron area for 20 years before moving to Denison. Ben did custom fencing in Crawford County until his retirement in 1960. He has since continued to make Denison his home where he was a member of the American Legion.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son Arlo, two brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include his wife Rosie of Denison, three sons, Willard and Burdell of Denison and Gene of Onawa, ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Also by two brothers, Knut of Cherokee and Ted of Denison and one sister, Wanda, Mrs. Art Spahn of Storm Lake.

Funeral services were held Dec. 1 at 2:00 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Denison. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. The Rev. Jack Heck officiated at the services. Pallbearers included Leroy Friedrichsen, Ray Gonnerman, Clarence Friedrichsen, Everett Peasley, Edward Marth and Alvin Naeve. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Bertha (Arnold) Comstock (1892 - 1966)

Funeral services for Mrs. Bertha Comstock were held at the Zion Lutheran church on March 31 (1966) with the Rev. Carl W. Schmidt officiating. Music was provided by the Lutheran Ladies choir with Mrs. Carl Schmidt serving as organist. Pallbearers were Ben Boeck, Eldon Brodersen, James Leinen, Terry O'Neil, Ernest Voss and William E. Wight.

Daughter of Matt and Maria (Daum) Arnold, she was born Nov. 22, 1892 in Washington township. In early infancy she was baptized and later confirmed in the Lutheran church.

On Feb. 20. 1918. she was married to David Comstock and to this marriage one son was born. They farmed in Nishnabotna township until coming to make their home in Denison in 1947. She had been in poor health the past two years and hospitalized several times. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran church and the Lutheran Ladies Aid.

Survivors are her son, Glen, two grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Ann Bergstedt, and one brother, Gus Arnold. Three brothers and one sister preceeded her in death.

Bertha Henriette Carstens (1895 - 1988)

Bertha Henriette Carstens was born on April 21, 1895, on a farm near Deloit, Ia., the daughter of Hans Lawrence and Henriette Linke Carstens. She died on June 14 1988 at the Denison Care Center in Denison at the age of 93 years.

Bertha moved with her family to the Charter Oak area at an early age and attended rural schools near Charter Oak. Her father died when she was a young girl and the family moved into Charter Oak. She was a housekeeper for numerous families in the Charter Oak area and later devoted her life to the care of her mother. After her mother's death, she continued to make her home in Charter Oak until November, 1987 when she entered the Denison Care Center in Denison.

Bertha was baptized on Dec. 3, 1899 and later confirmed in April of 1909. She was a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. She enjoyed doing crochet and embroidery work as a hobby.

Bertha was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Conrad and Fred Carstens and two sisters, Emma Teut and Ella Carstens. Survivors include nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 16 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak with the Rev. L. C. Gebhardt officiating at the services and graveside rites at the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. Mrs. L. C. Gebhardt was organist. Henry Henningsen was soloist, singing, "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and "Rock of Ages." Serving as pallbearers were Donald Teut, Russell Carstens. Donald Clausen, Gale Carstens, Lowell Carstens and Walter Holtorf. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak.

Bertha Wilhelmine (Groneberg) Dethmann (1893 - 1971)

Bertha Wilhelmine Groneberg, the daughter of Ernest and Johanna Groneberg, was born in Stockholm Township on January 23, 1893. She was baptized in infancy and later confirmed in Schleswig.

On December 8, 1915 she was married to John Dethmann and after their marriage they lived at Battle Creek and later farmed in the Denison community and also lived in Denison. Mr. Dethmann passed away in 1957.

Her death is survived by two sisters. Mrs. A. W. Lasker of North Platte, Nebr. and Mrs. Jack Chattack of Correctionville, Iowa; by brothers. Eric Groneberg of Holstein and Ernest Groneberg of Hewitt, Minn.

Preceding her in death were two brothers, Erwin and Chris and a sister, Anna.

Her funeral service was held at the Maxwell Funeral Home on Thursday morning, August 12 (1971) with the Rev. Carl W. Schmidt officiating at the service. Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist and accompanied Henry Henningsen the soloist. Interment was made in the Morgan Township Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers: Emil Burmeister, Fred Beerman. Rudolph Heide, Arden Amman. Joe Shields and Fay Woodruff.

Carl Johannes Friedrichsen (1889 - 1972)

Carl Johannes Friedrichsen was born November 11, 1889, the son of Martin and Anna Gettberg Friedrichsen. He was baptized and confirmed at the First Evangelical and Reformed Church.

On February 27, 1913, he married Ella Brockman. After marriage, the couple farmed in Crawford County near Schleswig and in 1949, they moved to Schleswig, where they have made their home since then.

Carl reached the age of 82 years 11 months and 8 days and passed away in his sleep Thursday morning, October 19, 1972 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital after a lingering illness. Carl was known and loved by all in the community.

He was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister.

He is survived by his wife, Ella; one son, Raymond and daughter-in-law, Donna; two grandchildren, Larry of Denison and Mrs. Jeanne Schurter of Omaha, Nebraska; one great-grandson; two sisters, Mrs. Violet Moeller and Mrs. Erna Schmidt; plus other nieces and nephews and many friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday, October 21, 1972, at Sinn's Funeral Home in Schleswig Iowa. Rev. Harry L. Strong of Denison, Iowa officiated. Pallbearers were: C. Henry Petersen, Wm. Brockmann, Raymond Jepsen, Herbert Wellendorf, Richard Moeller and Leslie Friedrichsen. Interment was in the Morgan Cemetery.

Carl J. Schultz (1878 - 1964)

Carl J Schultz, son of Augusta Schultz and Henrietta Fink Schultz. was born Nov 9, 1878, in Hanover township. He was baptized Feb 2 of that year by Pastor Haar and was confirmed on March 18, 1894 by Pastor Runge in St Paul's Lutheran church in Hanover township.

He was married to Anna Nemitz on June 5, 1904. To this union there were born seven children, Paul, Ben, William, Viola, Erna, Edgar and Helen. They also adopted a daughter, Minnie. Mrs Schultz passed away on March 19, 1961 and Edgar passed away since then.

Mr Schultz farmed in Hanover township until his retirement. He then made his home in Charter Oak until Mrs Schultz passed away. Since then he has been making his home with his children.

After many years of illness, he passed away Tuesday afternoon, June 9, 1964. He reached the age of 85 years and 7 months.

Among the survivors are the following seven children: Paul Schultz of Denison. Ben Schultz of Battle Creek, William Schultz of Charter Oak, Viola, Mrs Martin Dorale, of Ute, Erna (Mrs Irvin Kastner) of Kiron, Helen, Mrs August F Petersen, of Denison, and Minnie, Mrs George Huebner, of Yakima, Wash. One brother, Earnest Schultz, of Denison, two sisters. Adelheld Wiegand of Omaha, Minnie Martens of Manning; also 33 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday, June 12, at 2 pm at St John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. Words of comfort were by Rev O R Schlegelmilch, pastor. Comfort music by William Ziesemer, organist; Arthur Beeck, soloist. Hymns, "Cross and Comfort" and "Forever with my Lord."

Caroline (Jurgensen) Grell (1882 - 1978)

Caroline Grell was born on October 11, 1882, at Clinton County, Iowa, the daughter of Edlef and Margaret Jurgensen. She died on April 8, 1978, at Eventide Lutheran Home, Denison, Iowa, at the age of 96.

As a young child, Caroline moved with her family to Hanover Township, Crawford County, Iowa where she was raised and educated. She was baptized and later confirmed into the Lutheran faith.

On February 21, 1905, she was united in marriage to Carl Grell at Charter Oak, Iowa. They made their first home on a farm near Schleswig. Later they lived south of Ricketts until 1913 when they moved to Ricketts. In Rickets they operated a meat market and grocery until 1955 when they retired. Carl , passed away in 1961 and Caroline continued to live in Ricketts until 1972 when she moved to Eventide in Denison.

She was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church and a member of its Ladies Aid and a member of the Eventide Auxiliary.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Caroline was preceded in death by one son, five brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include, one daughter, Mrs. Mina Moeller of Walnut, California and one son Albert of Ricketts. Also by eight grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 11, 1978, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Ricketts, Iowa. Burial was in Crawford Heights at Denison. The Rev. Dale Werling officiated at the services. Pallbearers included Ernie Grell, Leslie Grell, Alfred Grell, Erwin Voss, Earl Hennings and Robert Johannsen.

Charley Conrad Burk (1885 - 1971)

Funeral services were held for Charley Burk on Monday, March 8, 1971, at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. Rev. R.J. Ratzlaff officiated. Mrs. John Evers was the organist. Mrs. Ernie Grell and Mrs. G. M. Johnson sang "Old Rugged Cross" and "Heaven Is My Home".

Charley Conrad Burk passed away Saturday, March 6, 1971 at the Battle Creek Hospital having reached the age of 85 years, 7 months, 11 days.

Mr. Burk was born in Crawford County on July 25, 1885 and lived here all his life. He was the son of the late Conrad Burk and his wife, Friedricka Winnie.

On July 1, 1906 he married Emma Peterson. They observed their golden wedding anniversary in 1956.

She preceded him in death in 1961. To this union two children were born: Frances (Mrs. Ray Abbe) and LaVern, (Mrs. Eddie Schneider) of Battle Creek.

Mr. Burk is further survived by one granddaughter, Sandra Sue Burton of Danbury; two great-grandchildren, Christine and Kelly; one sister, Amanda Peterson of Schleswig; other relatives and friends.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers and four sisters.

Pallbearers were Walter Burk, Vernis Petersen, Eldred Gronau, Robert Zabel, Walter Petersen and Cyrenus Petersen. Interment was at Morgan Cemetery.

Charley Speck (1879 - 1971)

Charley Speck, son of Claus and Christina Speck, was born Oct. 5, 1879 in Keil, Germany. He came to the United States as a young man, and on Oct. 5, 1906 at Denison he was united in marriage to Marie Koerner. To this union three children were born.

Mr. Speck was engaged in farming in the Denison and Goodrich Center area until 1940 when he retired and moved to Denison. In May of 1965 he made his residence at the Rosa Vista Nursing Home in Woodbine.

Mr. Speck died on Sept. 17, 1971 at the Rosa Vista Nursing home, reaching the age of 91 years, 11 months and 12 days.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie, who died on Aug. 6, 1958 and a son Herman and a daughter Ina.

He leaves to mourn his passing a daughter, Mrs. Lydia Hyson of Cheney, Wash., a grandson, one granddaughter, one great-grandson, one great-granddaughter and one great-great-grandson.

Funeral services for Mr. Speck were held Sept. 21, 1971 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Burial was at Oakland Cemetery. Pallbearers were Herbert Quandt, Ernest Voss, Arnold Gluesing, Leonard Grill, John J. Lorensen and Maynard Schuler.

Chris T. F. Denker (1867 - 1932)

Chris T. F. Denker died suddenly Thursday night March 3 (1932) at 10:50 o'clock after an illness of only a few days duration. He was taken ill at his home and moved to the Denison hospital Wednesday after an attack of pneumonia but was not in good enough physical condition to withstand the attack.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Lutheran church with Rev. Wm. Frese officiating, interment followed in the Lutheran cemetery.

The deceased was born October 27, 1867 at Toekendorf, Holstein, Germany and came to America when 15 years of age. He first resided in Illinois and later moved to Nebraska and for the last 44 years resided in Crawford county.

On December 30, 1890 he was united in marriage to Miss Frieda Heide and to this union were born nine children, two of whom died in infancy. After coming to Crawford county he purchased a fine farm just west of Denison where the family resided until he retired from active work in 1918. In 1920 Mrs. Denker passed, away and since that time he has made his home with his youngest daughter and son in Denison.

Since 1903 he has held the office as deacon in the Lutheran church several terms and acted as chairman one term. He was a staunch democrat and took active part in the party politics.

Surviving are his seven children: Hugo: Paul; Rosa. Mrs. Herman Hasse; Max; Rudolph; Ella and Walter; and 12 grandchildren.

Christian H. Rusch (1880 - 1964)

Funeral services for Christian H. Rusch were held Saturday at the United Church of Christ (E&R). Mrs Byron Behrmann and Mrs Ernie Grell sang "In The Garden" and "Whispering Hope" accompanied on the organ by Mrs John Evens. Rev. Walter Baumgartner read the following obituary:

Christian Henrich Rusch was the oldest son of Claus Rusch and his wife Bertha, nee Jensen. He was born in Morgan Township, Crawford County, Iowa on January 19, 1880. In 1908 he was baptized and confirmed by the Rev. Mr Hansen.

On the 27th of February, 1906, he was united in marriage to Minnie Claussen. The couple lived on the farm west of Schleswig and spent their entire life in this community. Three sons were born to this union. After 44 years of farming, Mr and Mrs Rusch retired and lived in the town of Schleswig beginning in the fall of 1950.

In June of 1963, Mrs Rusch died. For several months Mr Rusch made his home with his son Edwin. However, since he needed constant care, he decided to enter the Eventide Home for the aged. He became seriously ill on March 31 and was taken to the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, where he died April 9, 1964 at the age of 84 years.

He is survived by his three sons: Harvey of Denison; Edwin, of Schleswig and Elmer of Manning, and three daughters in law. Four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Five sisters and two brothers, Katie Mahlstedt of California, Elizabeth Claussen of Schleswig, Ella Jahde of Castana; Meta Weir of Sioux City and Margaret Clausen of Bruce, Wisconsin, Henry of Charter Oak, Iowa and Herman of Mapleton, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents and one brother, John Rusch and one sister, Mrs Julia Hoeppen.

Burial was made in the Morgan Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Henry Aldag, Jens Edsen, Bernhard Jensen, Paul Voss. A. C. Schwarz and Otto Keller.

Christina Marie (Volkman) Reincke (1894 - 1978)

Christina Marie Reincke was born on August 7, 1894 near Schleswig, Iowa, the daughter of Emil and Agnes Volkman. She died on Sunday, June 11, 1978, at her home in Schleswig, Iowa, at the age of 83.

Christina was raised on a family farm and received her formal education in the rural schools near Schleswig. She was baptized and later confirmed in the Christian faith.

On January 20, 1915, she was united in marriage to Harold Reincke at Schleswig, Iowa. Together they lived and farmed in the Schleswig area until 1957, when they retired. Upon retirement, they moved to Schleswig. Harold died in 1963.

Since Harold's death Christina has continued to make Schleswig her home where she was a member of the United Church of Christ.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Christina was preceded in death by one brother and two infant brothers.

Survivors include two sons, Clarence and Ralph, both of Schleswig, one granddaughter and two great-grandchildren. Also by one brother, Herbert Volkman of Deloit, and three sisters, Anna Volkman and Edna Stegemann both of Schleswig and Velma, Mrs. Aldelbert Firnhaber of Fort Dodge.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, June 14, 1978, at 2:00 p.m. at the United Church of Christ, Schleswig. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Kenneth Miller officiated at the services. Pallbearers included Palmer Volkman, Fred Jacobs, Walter Bliesmann, Vernet Soenkseh, James Whiteing and La Verne Bjustrom.

Christine (Hildebrandt) Eggert (1887 - 1966)

Funeral services were held for Mrs. Johannes (Christine) Eggert on Saturday, Jan. 22, (1966) at 10:30 a. m. at the Zion Lutheran; church. Rev. C. W. Schmidt officiated. Music was provided by the Lutheran Indies' choir, accompanied by Mrs. Fred Rabe. Pallbearers were Arthur Eggert, Walter Jaacks, Alfred Petersen, Vernon Schroeder and Andrew Thomsen. Interment was in the Oakland cemetery.

Daughter of John and Sophia (Tagen) Hildebrandt. she was born in Cook county, Ill., on June 1, 1887. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church in Chicago, transferring to the Zion Lutheran church in Denison in 1901, when her family moved to Crawford county.

On March 23, 1910, she was married to Johannes Eggert. They made their home on a farm in Hanover township until their retirement in 1945, when they moved to Denison. She died at the local hospital on Jan. 19 (1996).

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Irene, and three sisters: Anna, Mary and Emma.

Survivors include her husband; three sons: Eddie, Henry and Harold, all of Denison; five grandchildren; five great- grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Rosa Jaacks, of Denison.

Christine Margaret (Clausen) Schwarz (1885 - 1965)

Funeral services for Mrs Christine M. Schwarz of Ricketts were held Tuesday morning at St. Luke's Lutheran church in Ricketts. Rev. F. A. Wiese read the following obituary:

Christine Margaret, daughter of John and Margareta Clausen was born February 13, 1885 in Soldier Township. She was baptized by Pastor Runge and confirmed in Immanuel, Soldier Township.

She was married to William Schwarz on February 15, 1905. The couple lived on the home place farm, four miles north of Ricketts for 39 years. They moved to Ricketts in 1944. In August of 1964, Mrs Schwarz suffered a stroke. Since then her health has been fair. She suffered another stroke on Monday, March 29th and died on Saturday, April 3rd (1965) at the Battle Creek Hospital. She was one of the founders of St. Luke's and a very faithful member of the congregation.

She is survived by her husband William of Ricketts, 3 sons: Victor of Ricketts, Bernard of White Water, Montana, and Paul of Charter Oak.

One son Elmer preceeded her in death. Two brothers: Barney of Malta, Montana and Willie of Denison. Four sisters: Minnie, wife of Henry Stamps of Lafayette, Colorado, Lizzie, wife of George Grable of National City, California, Ella, wife of Ben Christiansen of Mapleton and Mrs Rosie Gries of Auburn, Washington. Sixteen grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. She attained to 80 years, one month and 20 days.

Burial was made in St. Paul Lutheran cemetery at Hanover Township. The pallbearers were: James Schwarz, Richard Schwarz, Kenneth Schwarz, Wendell Schwarz, Robert Schwarz and Roger J. Jensen.

Clara Auguste Friederike (Schultz) Stegemann (1879 - 1964)

Funeral services were held for, Clara Stegemann Friday, October 30, 1964, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig, Rev. F. A. Wiese officiating. Music was by Mrs Ray Schmidt organist; hymns were "In the Cross of Christ I Glory" by the choir, and "The Lord is My Shepherd", by the congregation.

Clara Auguste Friederike, one of twelve children in the family of Herman Schultz and Emma nee Thomas, was born on the 24th of February 1879 in Crawford County. She was received in God's Kingdom of Grace through the sacrament of holy baptism administered by Pastor Haar on May 18th, 1879. She was confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hanover Township by Pastor Carl Runge on March 26, 1893. She grew up in the Morgan Township and Denison vicinities.

She was married to Albert F. Stegemann on March 18, 1930 by the Rev. Martin Mueller, pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Council Bluffs. Clara was a long time resident of Schleswig, holding membership in the Lutheran congregatetion around 45 years. For many decades she was a member of the Priscilla Club.

In August of 1963, because of frailties of age, she made her home at Eventide, Denison. Her health was fair up to the last few months. She died at the Crawford Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, October 27th.

Clara was preceded in death by her husband Albert who died February 12th, 1949 and six sisters.

She is survived by her five brothers: Albert of Eventide, Denison: "Martin of Ann Arbor, Michigan: George of Denison: Bernhard of Decater, Indiana and Walter of Schleswig. She attained to 85 years, eight months and three days.

Pallbearers were Paul Briggle, Raymond Loeck, Clifford Weise, Alfred Rix, Leonhardt Schultz, and William Moxley. Interment was in St. Paul's Cemetery, Hanover township.

Mildred Mesenbrink (Brady) Vaughan (1895 - 1971)

Mildred Mesenbrink Vaughan, daughter of the late Frank and Susan A. VanGundy Brady, was born and raised in Dunlap and attended Dunlap schools. She was united in marriage to Benjamin H. Mesenbrink on Feb. 4, 1914. They made their home in Dunlap, later moving to Denison. To this union six children were born. Mr. Mesenbrink died in June of 1943.

She was united in marriage to Jess Marion Vaughan of Bayard, Ia. on Dec. 7, 1965. They made their home in Bayard. Mrs. Vaughan died at her home May 19, 1971 at the age of 75 years, 11 months and 16 days.

She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband Benjamin, one son Russell, and a stepson Merle Vaughan and a sister Hazel.

Mrs. Vaughan is survived by her husband Jess, three sons Donavon of Denison, Ben Jr. Mesenbrink of Ankeny, Jarvis Mesenbrink of Dike, two daughters, Virginia, Mrs. Robert Boeck and Janae, Mrs. Marvin Meyer, both of Denison, three stepsons, Marion of Bayard, Frank of Marrilton, Ark., Jim of Yale, Ia., four stepdaughters, Frances, Mr. Vic Steigerwalt of Jefferson, June, Mrs. Ivyl Greenlee of Scranton, Hilda, Mrs. Tony Moraley of San Diego, Mary Ann, Mrs. Howard Sheeder of Guthrie Center, 13 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, 23 step grandchildren, 15 Step great grandchildren, three brothers, John Brady of Santa Paula, Calif., Charles Brady of Larkspur, Calif., Willis Brady of Omaha.

Funeral services were held May 22, 1971 at 2 p.m. in Huebner Funeral Home in Denison with Rev. Steve Shepherd, officiating. Interment was made at the Oakland Cemetery at Denison, with pallbearers being David Boeck, Roger Mesenbrink, Ronald Mesenbrink, Ben Meyer, Leslie Meyer and Dennis Steigerwalt.

Mildred Irene (Boger) Carstens (1922 - 1989)

Mildred Irene Carstens, daughter of William F. and Florence Schwieso Boger was born in Denison, Ia., on Jan. 22, 1922, and died at her home in Bagley, Ia., Jan. 9, 1989, at the age of 66 years, 11 months and 17 days.

Mildred attended grade school in Denison and high school in Manilla. On June 1, 1939, she was united in marriage with John Carstens. They were the parents of five children: Judy, Jon, Jack, Jeff and Juhl. The family made their home in the Schleswig, Denison and Wall Lake areas. They lived in Smithland from 1949 until 1963, and then lived in the Yale-Bagley area for twenty five years, retiring to Bagley in 1976.

Mildred's family and home were very important to her. She enjoyed sewing, and cooking was her specialty. She was known and loved as grandma to the neighborhood children. Mildred was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Mildred is survived by her husband John; one daughter, Judy Bly and her husband Nat of Marion; four sons: Jon, Jack, Jeff and his wife, Marilee, and Juhl, all of Bagley; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Audry Steffen and husband, Carroll of Charter Oak; and brother, Gerald Boger of Denison; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Hastings Funeral Home in Jefferson with Rev. Dale A. Schoening of the Bagley United Methodist Church of Bagley officiating. Vicki Stanley was organist and Marilynn Hoskinson, soloist, singing "Rock of Ages" and "One Day at a Time." Honorary pallbearers were Neal Steffenson, Merle Chaloupka, Jim McAlister, Dan Dunnwald, Barry Rath and Brian Rath. Pallbearers included Eddie McCartney, Loren Cabelka, Jerry Barcus, Jake England, Bud Holbrook, Verlin Kraft and Ron West. Interment was in the Dodge Township Cemetery in Guthrie County.

Mildred Irene (Boger) Carstens (1922 - 1989)

Mildred Irene Carstens, daughter of William F. and Florence Schwieso Boger was born in Denison, Ia., on Jan. 22, 1922, and died at her home in Bagley, Ia., Jan 9, 1989, at the age of 66 years, 11 months and 17 days. Mildred attended grade school in Denison and high school in Manilla.

On June 1, 1939, she was united in marriage with John Carstens. They were the parents of five children; Judy, Jon, Jack, Jeff and Juhl. Mildred (Vogt) Plagge (1911 - 2003)

Mildred Plagge was born September 10, 1911, the daughter of John and Mary Blunk Vogt. She died Friday, August 15, 2003 at the Denison Care Center in Denison, Iowa at the age of ninety-one.

She was born on a farm near Denison, Iowa and was baptized in Christ in March of 1912 at the Zion Lutheran Church. She received her education in a rural school near her home.

On November 14, 1928, Mildred was united in marriage to William Plagge in Denison. The couple made their home on a farm near Denison and were blessed with the birth of five children. In 1936, Mildred and William moved to Denison and Mildred began working at various businesses including: Armor's packing plant, the local poultry plant, Tucker's Laundry, Angie's Cafe, U & I Cafe, Cronk's Cafe, The Denison Hotel, Jo's Steakhouse and Claudia's Nursing Home.

Mildred was confirmed on January 15, 1936 and was a devoted member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. She enjoyed crocheting, crafts and playing Bingo.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1983, two sons, Louis and Dennis Plagge, one grandson, Lyle Plagge; three brothers, Henry, Herbert and Jack Vogt. Survivors include three daughters, Delores Riley and her husband, Richard of Everly; Lois Hansen of Fonda; Doris Bartholomew and her husband, Jim of Storm Lake; two daughters-in-law, JoAnn Plagge of Denison; Pat Plagge of Denison; eighteen grandchildren; thirty-one great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Hazel Hintz of Denison; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, August 19, 2003 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. David Sewing officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison, Iowa. Organist Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for Beth Vogt as she sang "On Eagle's Wings" and "Amazing Grace". The congregational hymn was "How Great Thou Art". Those serving as Pallbearers were Grandsons: Mike Bartholomew, Patrick Quandt, Myron Plagge, Steven Riley, Brian Plagge and David Riley. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Milo John Riessen (1924 - 1983)

Milo John Riessen was born on July 26, 1924 near Schleswig, Iowa, the son of George and Ella Erichsen Riessen. He died Nov. 25, 1983 at St. Lukes Medical Center in Sioux City, at the age of 59.

Milo spent his early years on a family farm near Schleswig. He received his primary education in the rural schools near his home. After the completion of his education he farmed for his family.

Milo served in the U.S. Army during World War Two. After his release from the military he returned to Crawford County where he worked with his family. After his parents retirement from farming he moved into the Denison community where he was employed. Since that time he has continued to make Denison his home.
Milo was baptized as an infant and later confirmed at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. He has remained a member all his life.

In addition to his parents, Milo was preceded in death by one brother Raymond.

Survivors include, three brothers, Orville Riessen of Charter Oak, Leonard Riessen of Vail and Arlo Riessen of Denison and two sisters, Florence, Mrs. Lawrence Griffin and Arlene, Mrs. Arlo Jahn, both of Denison. Also surviving is a special friend, Billie Andresen and a sister in law Mrs. Raymond Riessen.

Funeral services were held on Nov. 29, at 10:30 A. M. at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. Burial was in Morgan Cemetery. The Rev. Fred Moore officiated at the services. Mrs. Dorothy Jessen served as organist with Mrs. Barb Buffum as soloist. Hymns included, The Lord's Prayer and What A Friend We Have In Jesus. Pallbearers were Norb Roecker, Don Roecker, Adolph Neddermeyer, LaVern Alberts, Wayne Schultz, and Jim Lodiwick. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison.

Minnie Auguste (Jensen) Sachau (1879 - 1968)

Mrs. Minnie Sachau passed away at Crawford County Memorial Hospital Saturday morning at 8:30, Sept. 21 (1968). She has been hospitalized various times during recent months, being taken for her last stay at the hospital on Sept. 6.

Minnie Auguste Jensen was born at ?nton, Iowa on Sept. 12, 1879. As a child she came with her parents to Crawford County, living in Goodrich Township.

She was married to John Sachau on Feb. 26, 1901. After their marriage they farmed near Deloit and in Goodrich Township before retiring to Denison in 1940. Mr. Sachau died in January, 1967.

Her funeral service was held at the Maxwell Funeral Home on Tuesday, Sept. 24 with the Rev. Carl W. Schmidt officiating. Hymns were sung by the Lutheran Ladies Choir with Mrs. Fred Rabe serving as organist. Interment was made in Morgan Township Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers: Alvin Dixon, Arlo Jensen, Carl Hintz, Curtis Sachau, Delbert Sachau, and Lodean Schmidt.

Surviving are the following children: Louis of Lincoln, Neb.; Mrs. Dollie ?utsch of Los Angeles, Calif.; Harry Sachau and Mrs. Maxine Schmidt of Dixon; one sister, Mrs. Louise Woodruff of Denison; seven grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Four brothers and seven sisters preceded her in death.

Minnie (Ladwig) Boyens (1894 - 1972)

Mrs. Minnie Boyens, daughter of William and Lizzie (Schlemmer) Ladwig, was born October 30, 1894, in Stockholm Township, and died Tuesday, October 3, 1972, at the age of 77 years, 11 months and 3 days.

Minnie was born and raised on a farm, attended rural schools and has lived in Crawford County all her life.

She was united in marriage to Lorenz Boyens on March 5, 1913, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, with Pastor Frese performing the ceremony. After their marriage, the couple farmed in Goodrich Township, then from 1922 in Soldier Township, in 1945 the couple retired to Ricketts, where she was living at the time of her death. To this union 3 children were born.Mr. and Mrs. Boyens celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 1963.

She is survived by her three children, Raymond of Charter Oak, Iowa; Viola, Mrs. Fred Jess of Galva, Iowa; and Irene, Mrs. Meinert Jensen of Ricketts, Iowa; 9 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, one brother Albert Ladwig of Denison, Iowa, many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Lorenz, one brother Herman and one sister Anna.

Funeral services were held Friday, October 6, 1972, at 2 p. m. at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Ricketts, Iowa, with Rev. Mark F. Broecker officiating. Mrs. Loren Lee, serving as organist, accompanied the congregation. Interment was made in Morgan Township Cemetery at Schleswig, with the following serving as pallbearers: Allen Gloede, Virgil Kuehl, Dale Peterson, Michael Petersen, Myron Sievers and Glenn Wigg.

Minnie DeMey (1897 - 1982)

Funeral services for Minnie DeMey, 85, a Crawford County native, were held, Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lancaster, Calif. Interment was in Joshua Memorial Park. The Rev. Denis Mooney officiated.

DeMey was born April 21, 1897, in Charter Oak. She died Dec. 11 at Antelope Valley Convalescent Hospital following a brief illness. She came to the Valley in 1961.

She is survived by three sons, Earl of Sibley, Raymond of Lancaster, Calif. and LeRoy of Sioux City; two daughters, Pearl DeVito of Lancaster, Calif. and Irene Earnest of Ames; two sisters, Mary Fastje of Denison and Alice Carstensen of Jefferson; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, William.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be sent to the Gift Foundation of Antelope Valley Hospital Medical Center, 1600 W. Ave. J., Lancaster (cancer unit).

Minnie Gertrude (Bruhn) Eyer (1892 - 1969)

Mrs. Minnie Eyer died at Eventide on Jan. 7. She had been in poor health for several months.

Minnie Gertrude Bruhn, daughter of Peter Bruhn and his wife Mary nee Fick, was born at Denison on May 30, 1892. In early infancy she was baptized and later confirmed in the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Charter Oak.

She was married to Sam Eyer on July 5, 1914 and resided on farms in the Charter Oak community. Mr. Eyer died Dec. 30, 1963 and since 1965, Mrs. Eyer had been a resident of Eventide.

Survivors include three sons, Gerald, Lavern and Alvin, all of Charter Oak, two daughters, Lucille of Glenwood and Mrs. Marie Kunau of Green Island, nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Also six brothers, Rudolph of Schleswig, Herbert of Mapleton, Leo of Manning, Louis of Charter Oak, Irwin of Mapleton and Raymond of Schleswig; two sisters, Mrs. Hattie Hingst of Buchanan, Mich., and Mrs. Hilda Brockmann of Melbourne.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, one grandson and a brother, Walter.

Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 10, 1969 at 2 p.m. with Rev. C. W. Schmidt officiating. Pallbearers were Greg Eyer, Steven Eyer, Frank Fundermann, Joseph Eyer, Edward Fundermann and Orville Groth. Interment was in the Garden of Good Shepherd in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Huebner Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Minnie (Claussen) Rusch (1882 - 1963)

Funeral services for Minnie K. Rusch were held Friday, June 7, at the United Church of Christ (E&R) in Schleswig. Mrs B. J. Behrmann and Mrs Ernie Grell sang "Abide With Me" and "Asleep In Jesus." The organist was Mrs Broder Petersen. Rev. Walter Baumgartner read the following obituary:

Mrs Christian Rusch, nee, Minnie Claussen, daughter of Henrick and Cathrina Claussen, was born in Crawford County, Iowa, June 24, 1882.

On Feb. 27, 1906, she was united in marriage to Christian Rusch. The officiating minister, Rev. C. Wehking, performed the ceremony in the Soldier church. To this union three sons were born. Mr and Mrs Rusch farmed west of Schleswig, for 44 years. In 1950, they retired and moved to the town of Schleswig.

Mrs Rusch enjoyed fair health and was able to do her housework regularly. On Tuesday evening, she suddenly and unexpectedly passed away at their home.

She is survived by her husband, and three sons: Harvey of Denison, Edwin of Schleswig, and Elmer of Manning.

She is also survived by: Four grandchildren and three great-grand-children; one sister - Bertha Holling of Durant; one brother - Herman of Chadron, Neb.; one half-brother - Arnold, one half sister - Mrs Cathrine Knop, both of California; two step-sisters - Mrs Herman Peper, Schleswig, and Mrs Charles Muhs, Hartley; two step brothers - Ben Carstensen, Ricketts, and Emil Carstensen, Hornick; besides many other relatives and a large number of friends.

She was preceded in death by: her parents, four sisters, two brothers, and one step-brother.

Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery. The pallbearers were: Paul Claussen, E. W. Claussen, C. H. Claussen, Richard Knop, Darold Lee, and Kenneth Dorale.

Hermina Matilda (Kusch) Keller (1874 - 1963)

Funeral services for Minnie Matilda Keller were held Monday, June 3, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ute, Iowa. Mrs Lois Christman accompanied the Ladies Choir. Rev. E. T. Lange, Pastor, read the following obituary:

Hermina Matilda Keller, daughter of Albert and Ida Kusch, was born Oct. 21, 1874 at West Prussia, Germany. In 1894 she came to the United States settling at Charter Oak. She and her husband later moved to the Schleswig community where they farmed, and in 1917 they came to the Ute vicinity where she made her residence for the remainder of her life, except for the last three years, which she spent at the Rose Vista Nursing home in Woodbine.

Minnie was married to Franz K. Keller on June 3, 1894, at Charter Oak, Iowa. This union was blessed with three daughters and five sons. She was a very devoted wife and mother and was highly respected by all of her neighbors and friends. Her husband preceded her in death on Aug. 31, 1953.

She was baptized in infancy and confirmed during her youth in Germany, and since coming to Ute she was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. She was also a honorary member of the Ladies Aid of this church. Mrs Keller departed this life on Friday, May 31, 1963, at a Woodbine nursing home after a short illness, and having reached the age of 88 years, 7 months and 10 days.

She is survived by three daughters: Mrs Clarence (Minnie) Riley of Ute; Mrs Mamie Holtorf of Charter Oak; and Mrs Clifford (Elsie) Creese of Charter Oak. Four sons: Otto of Schleswig; Albert of Soldier; Frank of West Sacramento, Calif.; and Edward of Martinez, Calif. One brother, Ernest Kusch, Schleswig. Three sisters: Mrs Martha Boettger, Schleswig; Mrs Julius Finnern, Omaha, Nebr.; and Mrs William Avermann, Gladbrook, Iowa. Eight grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren. Three great great grandchildren. She also leaves other relatives and a host of friends.

Besides her husband, she was also preceded in death by her parents, one son, two brothers and one sister. Mrs Keller was laid to rest in the Morgan cemetery at Schleswig the 3rd day of June 1963.

Cora (Brogden) Cose (1878 - 1963)

Mrs. Cora Cose, daughter of Newton and Rebecca Zea Brogden, was born Dec. 6. 1878 at Deloit. where she has lived most of her life. She was a member of the Reorganized Latter Day Saints Church at Deloit.

On Oct. 22, 1897, she was united in marriage to Charles Cose of Deloit. To this union nine children were born. Mr. and Mrs. Cose spent most of their life in the vicinity of Deloit, farming and in business. Last Oct. 22 they celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.

Her husband, Charles, two daughters, one son, her parents, six brothers and three sisters preceded her in death.

Survivors include five daughters, Mrs. Ruby Heide of Denison, Mrs. Myrtle Kelsey of Hornick, Mrs. Mildred Boyd of Le Mars, Mrs. Bernice Robinson of Reseda, Calif., Mrs. Opal Hansen of Deloit; one son, De Orr, of Maurice, 16 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, several other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held June 12, (1963) at 2 p. m. at the Huebner Funeral home. Words of comfort by Elder Elvin Baughman, Mrs. Elvin Baughman organist. Vocal selections were by Mrs. Robert Custer and Vincent Argotsinger. Pallbearers were: John Boyd, Jerry Cose, Dennis Hansen, Donald Kelsey, Glen Nissen and Paul Steinkamp. Interment was in the Deloit cemetery.

Dora Augusta (Namanny) Claussen (1889 - 1965)

Mrs. Hans Claussen died at the Memorial hospital in Denison on Feb. 28 (1965). She had been taken to the hospital as a patient on Jan. 30.

She was born Dora Augusta Namanny, daughter of August Namanny and his wife Mary Lee Tensfield near Charter Oak, Iowa on July 4, 1889.

On March 2, 1910 she was wed to Hans Claussen. After farming for five years near Charter Oak and in Hanover Township, they came to make their home in Goodrich Township where they resided since that time. Mr. Claussen died on Aug. 1, 1962.

Mrs. Claussen was a member of the Lutheran church in Denison and her funeral service was held here on March 3 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Carl W. Schmidt officiating. Hymns were sung by the Lutheran ladies choir with Mr. Fred Greinke serving as organist. Interment was made in Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Claussen had been an active member of the Zion Lutheran Ladies Aid for many years.

Surviving are four daughters; Mrs. Elsie Frehse of Denison. Mrs. Hilda Lindstrom of Ida Grove, Mrs. Marie Benin of Lake View and Mrs. Emma Hausmann of Odebolt, Iowa; two brothers, Peter and Henry Claussen of Denison; thirteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Also surviving are four sisters; Mrs. Emma Clausen of Denison. Mrs. Minnie DeMey of Lancaster, Calif., Mrs. Mary Fastje of Denison and Mrs. Alice Carstensen of Jefferson; three brothers; John Namanny of Charter Oak, William of Schleswig and August of Denison. Her husband, one brother and one sister preceded her in death.

Dora (Mundt) Claussen (1890 - 1981)

Dora Clausen was born on January 12, 1890 in Crawford County, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Louise Mundt. She died on Saturday morning, January 31, 1981, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, Iowa at the age of 91.

Dora was baptized and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She spent her early years on a farm in Soldier Township where she attended the rural schools.

On August 4, 1915, Dora was united in marriage to Peter H. Claussen at her family home in Ricketts, Iowa. Together they made their home in Ricketts. After Mr. Claussen's death in 1955, Dora continued to make her home in Ricketts until August of 1979 when she entered Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison due to ill health.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Dora was preceded in death by one son in infancy, one son Paul in 1974, four brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include, one son, Edward, of Schleswig, four daughters, Helen, Mrs. Thomas Houlihan of Fort Walton Beach, Florida, Pearl, Mrs. Roy Jorgensen of Warrensberg, Missouri, Mildred, Mrs. Ed Karpuk of Collinsville, Oklahoma and Hazel, Mrs. George Heilmann of Sioux City, Iowa and one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Betty Claussen of Ricketts. Also by seventeen grandchildren, fifteen greatgrandchildren, and two sisters, Rose, Mrs. Ted Wolfran of Ventura, Iowa and Mrs. Martha Jacobsen of Gardena, California.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, February 3, 1981 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Ricketts, Iowa. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. Iowa. Vicar Richard Jordan officiated at the services. Serving as pallbearers were Wayne Kuhlmann, Paul Schwartz, Paul Briggle Jr., Ken Baak, Herman Jepsen, and Vick Schwarz.

Dora (Beeck) Jepsen (1895 - 1965)

Funeral services for Dora Beeck Jepsen, who died on March 1 at home, were held on Friday, March 5, 1965 at the United Church of Christ. Mrs Harlan Bufum and Mrs Don Meyer sang. "Nearer My God To Thee" and "Asleep In Jesus." Mrs Broder Petersen accompanied them on he organ. Rev. R. J. Ratzlaff officiated.

Dora Beeck Jepsen, daughter of Fred Beeck and Margaret Lafrentz, was born on October 28, 1895 in Germany. She was united in marriage to Herman Jepsen of Schleswig on March 2, 1916. To this union one daughter, Irene Abbe and five sons, Fred, Victor, Edwin, Herman and Vernon were born.

They farmed southwest of town. Mrs Jepsen had been a resident of the Schleswig area since 1913. She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. She attained the age of 69 years.

She is survived by her husband, Herman, their six children, two sisters, Anna in Germany and Mrs Edward Jepsen, one brother, Fred Beeck, 29 grandchildren and one great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Burial was made in the Morgan cemetery. The pallbearers were: Robert Beeck. William Jeschke, Fred W. Jepsen, Fred D. Jepsen, Alfred Jepsen and Donald Kuehnhold.

Dora (Kahl, Mundt) Schneider (1882 - 1972)

Dora (Mundt) Schneider, 90, of Whittier, California passed away April 1, 1972 after being in the La Mirada convalescent hospital for seven months. Funeral services were held at the Hillside church at Rose Hills on April 4. Interment was in Rose Hills Memorial Park.

Dora Kahl was born in Germany in 1882 and came to America at the age of 9. In 1900 she was married to Henry Mundt of Crawford County Iowa. He passed away in 1936.

To this union four children were born: Frieda Boyens, deceased; Albert Mundt, deceased; Hertha Meyer of Denison, and Leona Shatford of Oceanside, California. She had nine grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and ten great-great-grandchildren.

In later years she married Chris Schneider of Whittier, California, now deceased.

Pallbearers were Bill Warn, Louie Warn, Nevin Maccuffin, Walt Sewell, Walter Mundt and Lowell Hauser.

Dora Mathilda (Lafrenz) Schroeder (1882 - 1972)

Funeral services for Mrs. Thomas Schroeder were held Tuesday, January 18, 1972, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig with the Rev. F. A. Wiese officiating. The organist was Mrs. Ray Schmidt. The congregation sang "Jesus, Lover of My Soul" and the choir sang "I'm But a Stranger Here".

Dora Mathilda Lafrenz, daughter of Henry Lafrenz and his wife Katherine Jurgensen was born December 8th, 1882, on the Isle of Fehmarn, Germany in the city of Burg. She was both baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Germany She came to this country in November 1902, first residing in Marshall County, Iowa, and a year later making her home in Crawford County.

On March 2, 1910 she was married to Cornelius Schroeder. The couple had three sons. Her husband died December 11, 1914.

On August 30, 1920, she remarried and became the wife of Thomas Schroeder. The Lord blessed them with one daughter. Thomas Schroeder died in Schleswig on December 9, 1956.

She was on the farm for many years in Goodrich Township, moving to Schleswig in 1941. Because of failing health, she made her home at Eventide the past 6 years. She died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital after a short illness on Saturday, the 15th of January.

She attained to 89 years, 1 month and 7 days. She was a long time member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig and belonged to the Ladies Aid Society.

She was preceded in death by her husbands Cornelius and Thomas, her first born, who died in infancy, her third son Cornelius, who was killed in a car accident, four sisters and one brother.

She is survived by her son J. Henry and her daughter Luella, wife of Ralph Reincke, both of Denison, four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were: Gary Koch, Fred Beeck, Dennis Hamer, Wilbur Chaney, Peter T. Jepsen and Tommy Schroeder. Interment was in the Morgan Cemetery.

Edith D. (Riessen) Schagt (1884 - 1974)

Mrs. Edith D. (Riessen) Schagt, age 89, formerly of Denison, Iowa passed away January 5, 1974, at the Lutheran Home in Perry, Iowa. where she made her home since 1965.

She was born on a farm in Crawford County, Iowa, October 16, 1884 and received her education in rural schools of that county. She was baptized and confirmed in Grant Township Church in 1910.

December 10, 1910, she was united in marriage to John C. Schagt at the Grant Township Church, and to this union three children were born. They farmed in Grant and Hayes Townships of Ida County until they retired to Denison in 1949.

Mrs. Schagt was preceded in death by her husband John, who died in 1951; her daughter Corrine, Mrs. L. Rascke; two sisters; one brother and three half sisters.

Survivors include one daughter Dorinda, Mrs. Adolph Kiertzner of Ames, Iowa; one son LeRoy of Schleswig, Iowa; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild, one brother George Riessen of Denison; many other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 8, 1974, 1:30 p.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Burial was made in the Morgan Township Cemetery, Schleswig, Iowa. Pastor Rev. Robert Maschke officiated. Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist and Henry Henningsen sang "Nearer My God to Thee" and "Just As I Am". The congregation sang "Rock of Ages". The following served as pallbearers: Albrecht Koch, Rudie Koch, Erwin Riessen, Ernie Riessen, Raymond Riessen and Orville Riessen.

Edna (Naeve) Teut (1890 - 1977)

Edna Teut was born on August 26, 1890 near Schleswig, Iowa the daughter of Henry and Emma Naeve. She died early Tuesday morning, July 26, 1977, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital at the age of 86.

As a young girl she was raised on the family farm in Otter Creek Township and attended rural schools. Later she attended high school in Schleswig. Edna was baptized and later confirmed into the Lutheran faith.

On August 20, 1912, she was united in marriage to Otto Teut at Denison, Iowa. To this union was born one son and two daughters. Together with her husband Edna lived on the farm west of Schleswig until 1943 when they retired and moved to Schleswig. For a number of years, Edna and Otto cared for the city park in Schleswig.

In addition to her parents, Edna was preceded in death by her husband Otto in 1971, one daughter Luverne in 1955 and six brothers.

Survivors include a daughter Lucille, Mrs. George Kuhlman of Charter Oak; a son Lenhardt of Schleswig, six grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren. Also by one brother Roy Naeve of Longmont, Colorado and two sisters, Meta Bielenberg of Denison and Ruth McGonigle of Sioux City.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 28, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig. Burial was made in the Morgan Cemetery, Schleswig. The Rev. Theodore Letzring officiated at the services. Pallbearers included Wayne Miller, Lowell Teut, Wayne Elwell, Allen Kuhlman, Ronald Kuhlman and Robert Fritz.

Elizabeth H. (Rusch) Claussen (1883 - 1981)

Elizabeth H. Claussen was born on June 4, 1883 near Schleswig, Iowa, the daughter of Claus and Bertha Jensen Rusch. She died on Friday morning, August 28, 1981 at the Buena Vista Hospital in Storm Lake, Iowa at the age of 98.

Elizabeth was reared on a family farm. She received her formal education in the rural schools near her home. She was baptized as an infant and later confirmed in the Christian faith.

On September 10, 1902, Elizabeth was united in marriage to C.J. Claussen at Schleswig. Together they made their home in Soldier for a short time before moving to Minnesota. In 1909 they moved to Schleswig. After Mr. Claussen's death in 1962, Elizabeth continued to make Schleswig her home. In 1973 she moved to Storm Lake where she became a resident of the Methodist Manor due to ill health.

In addition to her parents, Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband, one son, one daughter, four brothers and three sisters.

Survivors include, one son, Claus, of Schleswi;: two daughters, Pauline, Mrs. Ben Bielenbrrg of Pharr, Texas and Alberta, Mrs. Don Shevel of Storm Lake; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Clausen of St. Paul, Minnesota and Mrs. Meta Weir of Sioux City, Iowa.

Funeral services were held on Monday, August 31, 1981 at 2:00 p.m. at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. The Rev. Fred Moore officiated at the services. Serving as pallbearers were E.W. Claussen, Lowell Lee, Dwayne Lee, Loren Lee, Edwin Rusch and Elmer Rusch.

Elizabeth N. (Nieman) Petersen (1877 - 1975)

Elizabeth N. Petersen, daughter of John and Louise Dorenbush Nieman, was born Aug. 28, 1877, in Logansville, Wisc., and died April 10, 1975, at Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison at the age of 97 years.

Mrs. Petersen attended schools in Wisconsin and Irwin. On Aug. 28, 1898 she was united in marriage to Peter C. Petersen at Irwin. They settled in Astor, where Mr. Petersen operated a hardware and implement store. In 1927 they retired to Manilla. Mr. Petersen died in 1947. Mrs. Petersen continued to make her home in Manilla until entering the Denison Manor in 1972.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter, four brothers, Henry, Herman, John and William, three sisters, Dora, Emma, and an infant sister. Survivors include one daughter, Elsie J Mrs. Oliver Boeck of Denison, and two sons, Edward and Albert, both of Denison, five grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and many friends.

Funeral services were held at. 2:30 p.m., Saturday, April 12, in the Presbyterian Church, Manilla, with Reverend Robert Arends officiating. Pallbearers were Lloyd Cadwell, Frank James, James Theobald, Daniel Hansen, Douglas Hansen, and Mitchell Hansen. Interment was made in Oak Hill Cemetery Irwin, with Huebner Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Ella Augusta (Schmidt) Friedrichsen (1893 - 1966)

Mrs Julius Friedrichsen, 72, died Sunday evening at their home in Schleswig. Funeral services were held Wednesday March 16 (1966) at the United Church of Christ. Rev. R. J. Ratzlaff officiated. Mrs Broder Petersen accompanied Mrs Roy Martens and Mrs Ernie Grell on the organ. They sang "How Great Thou Art" and "The Old Rugged Cross."

Ella Augusta Friedrichsen nee Schmidt was born on March 19, 1893 in Otter Creek township to C. F. and Wilhemina Rabn(sic) Schmidt.

She was married to Julius Friedrichsen on March 10, 1915. To this union was born one daughter, Lucille and one son, LeRoy. They farmed in Ida and Crawford county moving to Schleswig five years ago. She died in her home in Schleswig on Sunday after a lingering illness. She was a member of the United Church of Christ of Schleswig.

Survivors include her husband, one daughter, Mrs Robert Vittitoe, one son, LeRoy Friedrichsen, a sister, Mrs Albert Stoltenberg and a brother John F. Schmidt all of Schleswig. Survivors also include three grandchildren and one great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Pallbearers were Wm L Namanny. Alvin Moeller, Johannes Breckling, Charles Franzek, Raynard Schmidt and Lester Schwanz. Interment was in Morgan cemetery.

Ella Elizabeth (Bendixen) Else (1887 - 1975)

Ella Elizabeth Bendixen Else, daughter of Henry Bendixen and Agnes Friedrichsen Bendixen, was born January 22, 1887, in Crawford County, Iowa, and died at the Eventide Home in Denison on Thursday, July 31, 1975, having attained the age of 88 years, 6 months and 9 days. She was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith.

On February 24, 1910, she was married to Julius M. Else at the Friedens Evangelical Church in Schleswig. They lived on the home place northwest of Schleswig until 1930 when they moved to town. Mrs. Else was an active member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, the Ladies Aid and the Aquila Priscilla Club.

Mr. Else passed away in 1967. Mrs. Else continued to make her home in Schleswig until August 1972, when she entered Eventide.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Julius in August 1967, and an infant son who died in 1922.

She is survived by two, children, Garnet (Mrs. Ray Schmidt) and James, both of Schleswig; one granddaughter, Vickie (Mrs. Walter R. Huebner) and two great-grandchildren, Andrea and Aaron all of Denison; two sisters, Selma (Mrs. Broder Petersen) of Schleswig, and Hattie (Mrs. Ed Lehman) of Denison; several nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday, August 2, 1975, 10 a.m., at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig with Pastor Theodore A. Letzring officiating. Mrs. Leroy Hight served as organist and the Immanuel Lutheran Choir sang "Be Still My Soul". The congregation sang "Nearer My God To Thee". The following served as pallbearers: Henry Bendixen Edgar Else, Wm. J. Petersen, Alfred Else, Raymond Else and Roland Struck. Interment was made in the Morgan Township Cemetery.

Ella Elizabeth (Ernst) Struck (1889 - 1972)

Ella Elizabeth Struck was the youngest daughter of Peter and Louise (Kortum) Ernst. She was born May 28, 1889 in Morgan Township, Crawford County, Iowa, and was baptized and confirmed in Frieden's Evangelical Church, now known as the United Church of Christ. She sang in the German Choir for many years and was a member of the Women's Guild.

On July 3, 1927, she was married to Edward Struck in the Presbyterian Manse in Denison by the late Rev. Fred E. Hamlin.

Mrs. Struck passed away early Wednesday morning, August 9, 1972, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital.

She was predeced in death by her parents, three brothers, two sisters and her husband.

Survivors are a step-son Roland Struck, and his wife Emma of Schleswig; a step-grandson Jerry Struck, his wife Neta, and their children, J. Matthew and Gretchen of Webster City, besides many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday morning, August 12, 1972, at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison, with Rev. Harry Strong officiating. Comfort in music by Henry Henningsen, who was accompanied by Mrs. Dorothy Norman on the organ. Pallbearers were: Walter Ernst, Frank Jensen, Ferd Knutson, Otto Kuehl, Ralph Struck and Milton Wassgren. Interment was in Morgan Township Cemetery near Schleswig.

Elsie Margaret (Jacobs) Pautsch (1897 - 1983)

Elsie Margaret Pautsch was born on December 9, 1897, at Keystone, Iowa, the daughter of Julius and Mary Hageman Jacobs. She died on Tuesday, March 29, 1983, at the Denison Care Center in Denison, Iowa, at the age of 85.

Elsie spent her early years in Benton and Woodbury counties in Iowa. When she was ten years old, her family moved to the Charter Oak community. She was baptized and later on March 12, 1912, confirmed in the Lutheran faith at St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. She completed her formal education in the Charter Oak Schools.

On June 2, 1918, Elsie was united in marriage to Ferd Pautsch at St. John's Lutheran Church. Together they farmed for forty-four years in the area of Charter Oak. After their retirement in 1961, they moved into Charter Oak.

In 1980, Elsie became a resident of the Denison Care Center in Denison due to failing health. Elsie was a long-time member of St. John's Lutheran Church. She was also a member of St. John's Ladies Aid.

In addition to her parents, Elsie was preceded in death by two great-grandchildren, one brother Elmer Jacobs and two sisters, Clare Ullerich and Lillie Schreiber.

Survivors include her husband Ferd of Charter Oak, three sons, Lester of Rantoul, Illinois, Lloyd of Ute and Russ of Sac City, Iowa and four daughters, Mrs. Irene Teut of Denison, Mrs. Lavina Wiebers and Orpha, Mrs. Burdell Jensen, both of Schleswig, and Marian, Mrs. Russell Boeck of Denison. Also surviving are twenty-nine grandchildren, thirty-seven great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Friday, April 1, 1983, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. Burial was in St. John's Cemetery near Charter Oak. The Rev. L.C. Gebhardt officiated at the services. Mrs. Paul Clausen served as organist with St. John's Choir singing hymns "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and "Beautiful Savior'. Grandsons serving as pallbearers were Ronald Teut, Richard Pautsch, Curtis Wiebers, Brent Jensen, Brian Pautsch, Kevin Boeck and Bradley Pautsch.

Emil Bielenberg (1879 - 1963)

Funeral services for Emil Bielenberg were held Thursday, June 27, (1963) at The United Church of Christ (E&R) in Schleswig. The hymns chosen for the services were "Abide With Me" and "Lead Kindly Light." Mrs Don Meyer and Mrs Harlan Buffum sang a duet. Mrs Broder Petersen was the organist. Rev. Walter Baumgartner read the following obituary:

Emil Bielenberg, son of Jacob and Emma (Meyer) Bielenberg, was born on November 4, 1879, in Ida County. He passed away Tuesday evening, June 25, at the Saunder's Rest Home in Denison at the age of 83 years, five months and 20 days.

Mr Bielenberg was united in marriage to Margaret Petersen on June 25, 1902. After their marriage the couple lived on several different farms in the Schleswig vicinity. In 1911 they bought their own farm near Ida Grove, and lived on it until 1920. At that time they returned to Schleswig to make their home.

In 1938 they returned to their farm and lived there until 1945. They returned to Schleswig, and lived there most of their lives.

Mrs Bielenberg passed away November 2, 1949. Mr Bielenberg continued to live in their home until six months ago. Due to ailing health he was taken to the Saunter's Rest home.

Emil was a home-loving man of a quiet and unassuming nature; a flood friend and neighbor. He was a member of the United Church of Christ and at one time served on the church council.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two brothers and three sisters. He is survived by two sisters-in-law: Mrs Wm. Bielenberg and Mrs M. Detlefsen and one brother-in-law, F. J. Petersen, all of Schleswig. He is also survived by nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers were: Gordon Aldag, Alvin Aldag, Ray Bendixen, E. F. Bendixen, Ben Bielenberg and Bart Bielenberg. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery.

Emil Ehrichs (1890 - 1976)

Emil Ehrichs, son of John and Anna Jurgensen Ehrichs, was born July 14, 1890, near Manilla, and died Dec. 3, 1976, in Crawford County Memorial Hospital at the age of 86 years, 4 months and 9 days.

Mr. Ehrichs was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He was raised on a farm near Manilla. In 1913 Mr. Ehrichs attended an auto school in Omaha. Upon finishing he returned and started an auto business in Aspinwall.

On Oct. 13, 1915, he was united in marriage to Emma Kuhl at Manilla. They made their home in Aspinwall. In 1941 they moved to Denison where Mr. Ehrichs established Ehrichs Motor Co., which he operated until the time of his death.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Emma, an infant daughter, two granddaughters, ten brothers, Chris, Henry, John, August, Herman, Ben, Alfred, Peter, Frank and Louie, and three sisters, Tena, Maggie and Anna.

Survivors include a daughter, Verna (Mrs. Harold Buthman) of Carroll, and Wilmer of Denison, eight grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Monday. Dec. 6, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Pastor Gary Hoffstetter officiated, with burial in the Nishnabotna Cemetery, Manilla. Organist was Mrs. Fred Rabe, and soloist was Henry Henningsen. Pallbearers were: Raymond Ehrichs, Edward Ehrichs, John Ehrichs, LeRoy Brus. William Vollstedt, and Marvin Juhl. Huebner Funeral Home of Denison, was in charge of the arrangements.

Emil Johann Jepsen (1880 - 1963)

Emil Johann Jepsen, son of the late Jurgen and Dorothea (Vollertsen) Jepsen, was born on Nov. 3, 1880 on a farm in Goodrich township, Crawford county. He spent his boyhood and early manhood in the community where he was born, and early became interested in the building trade.

On Feb. 19, 1908 he was married to Christine Danielsen. They lived in the Schleswig community for eight years, and in 1916 moved to Denison where they lived for the rest of his life with the exception of five years at Buck Grove.

Six children were born to this union, of whom two daughters are deceased: Meta, who died in October 1914 at the age of 23 months, and Dora, who died in February 1927 when 15 years of age.

Also preceding him in death were his parents, two brothers, Theodore and Jurgen, and one stepsister, Mrs. Dora Zage.

He has been an active member of the First Presbyterian church of Denison for many years. At the time of his demise, he was chairman of the board of trustees, was also a member of the building committee that directed the construction of the new edifice now nearing completion. This project was of great importance to him for the last two or three years, and the rest of the committee highly respected his judgement and appreciated his time and diligence in observing the progress and workmanship for them.

He died after a short illness at the Crawford County Memorial hospital on May 8 (1963) at the age of of 82 years, 6 months and 5 days.

He is survived by his wife, Christine: two sons, Edward of Denison and Irwin of Sacramento, Calif; two daughters, Leona (Mrs. Milton Nelson) of Denison, and Frieda (Mrs. John J. Presnell) of Des Moines; two half-brothers, Louie of Denison and John of Hot Springs. Ark; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, as well as a host of other relatives and friends.

He was well-known as a contractor and builder in this community and his fine workmanship may be seen in the many homes that he built in and near Denison.

Emma (Petersen) Burk (1883 - 1961)

Funeral services for Mrs Charley Burk were held Tuesday afternoon at the United Church of Christ (E&R). Mrs B. J. Behrmann and Mrs Harlan Buffum sang two hymns. They were accompanied on the organ by Mrs John H. Evers. Rev. Walter Baumgartner read the following obituary:

Mrs Emma Burk, daughter of Lorenz and Minnie Petersen, nee Suckstorf, was born April 28, 1883. Her birthplace was the present site of the town of Schleswig. Mrs Burk was baptized in the Grant Township Lutheran Church and later became a member of that church through confirmation.

On July 1, 1908, she was united in marriage to Charley Burk by Rev. Hansen To this union two daughters were born. Mr and Mrs Burk lived on their farm, north west of Schleswig. In 1949, they moved to the town of Schleswig. In 1958, they had the privilege to observe their golden wedding anniversary. Mrs Burk was a member of the Evangelical and Reformed Church and also a member of the Women's Guild.

Mrs Burk suffered a stroke on January 10, 1961. She received the best medical care, but her condition became serious and she passed away on February 4, 1961, at the age of 77 years, 9 months and 7 days.

She leaves to mourn her passing, her husband Charley, two daughters, LuVern, Mrs Ed Schneider of Battle Creek, and Frances, Mrs Ray Abbe of Schleswig. One grandchild, Sandra Sue Schneider. Two sisters, Amelia Miller of Schleswig, and Ella Petersen of Battle Creek. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and one sister.

Burial was made in the Morgan cemetery. The pallbearers were: Walter Burk, Robert Zabel, Vernes Petersen, Eldrid Gronau, Walter Petersen, and Henry Bendixen.

Emma (Gremonprez) DeConnick (1889 - 1969)

Denison - Funeral services for Mrs. Emma DeConnick, age 79 were held Wednesday, May 7, 1969 at 10 A M. at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Charter Oak, Iowa with Father Thiele officiating at the services. Burial was in the St. Boniface. Catholic Cemetery. Pall bearers were Leonard Keating Jr., Mike Keating, Bill Wolfe, Gene Katz, Doug Rosburg, Vincent Keating, James Keating and Ray Reetz.

Rosary was said Monday and Tuesday at The Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak, Iowa at 8 P. M. Huebner Funeral Home in charge.

Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Felex Gremonprez, she was born August 18, 1889 at Rock Island, Ill. She passed away May 4, 1969 at Maple Heights Inc. at Mapleton. Iowa after a long illness.

She is survived by three daughters and one son. Mae, Mrs. Matt Wolfe, of Boyer; Marg, Mrs. Leonard Keating of Charter Oak: Duke, Mr. Bernard DeConnick of Villa Park, Calif. and Maxine, Mrs. Robert Lange, of Low Point, Ill., 12 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by both parents and one brother, Charles, three sisters Mary, Mrs. Joseph King; Margaret, Mrs. Art Van De Willie; and Laura, Mrs. Les Boens.

Emma Frederika (Mohr) Clausen (1884 - 1976)

Mrs. Daniel Clausen (nee Emma Frederika Mohr) daughter of August Mohr and Christina Fadschild, was born in Morgan Township on December 24, 1884, and departed from this life April 20, 1976, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital. She reached the age of 91 years, 3 months and 27 days. She was baptized in Hanover Township, St. Paul's Lutheran Church.

On February 24, 1915, she was united in marriage to Daniel Clausen they made their home on a farm near Ricketts. In 1942, they retired and moved to Schleswig. Two daughters were born to this union: Clara and Helen. Mr. and Mrs. Clausen were privileged to observe their 60th wedding anniversary.

Emma, a was a member of the United Church of Christ, Schleswig. She resided at Eventide in Denison since the death of her husband, who passed away July 17, 1975. She enjoyed fairly good health in her later years.

Emma was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel; her daughter, Helen; her sisters, Ida and Caroline; her brothers, Gustav, August and Fred.

Emma is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Clara Teut of Schleswig two sons-in-law, Melvin Teut of Schleswig and Howard Mason of Ricketts; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Friday, April 23, 1976, at 10:30 a.m. at Schleswig United Church of Christ. Pastor Fred Moore officiated. Special music was provided by Jeanette Grell, Evelyn Johnson and Malinda Evers. Hymns of praise were "Heaven Is My Home" and "Abide With Me". Pallbearers were Robert Beeck, Paul Baak, Wayne Mason, Gary Mason, Harold McCollough and Leonard Clausen. Interment was in Morgan Cemetery, Schleswig.

Emma (Streit) Frahm (1878 - 1978)

Emma Frahm was born on Dec. 29, 1878 at Baden Providence, Germany, the daughter of Paul and Katherine Streit. She died Jan. 23, 1978 at Eventide Lutheran Home, Denison, at the age of 99.

Emma came to the United States with her, family as a teenager. The family made their home in Crawford County.

In 1898 she was united in marriage to Johann Frahm at Stockholm Township, Crawford County, Iowa. Together they made their home on a farm near Kiron until 1921 when they retired and moved to Denison. Johann died in 1930 and Emma continued to make her home in Denison.

In 1963 Emma made her home at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, where she lived the rest of her life. She was a member of Zion Lutheran a Church and a member of its Ladies Aid.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, one step daughter and five step sons.

Survivors include, four sons, Emil, Arthur and Anton, all of Denison and Gustav of Thief River Falls, Minn., Also by two step daughters Mrs. Fred Schurke of Kiron and Mrs. Henry Schurke of Deloit and by 17 grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Jan. 26, at 2 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Denison. Burial was in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery Stockholm Township. The Rev. Gary Hoffstetter officiated at the services. Pallbearers included, Dennis Frahm, Jerry Frahm, William Frahm, Leonard Schurke, Alvin Schurke and Edward Dahleen. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Emma (Baeth) Johannsen (1892 - 1972)

Mrs. Fredrick Johannsen, 79, of Correctionville, Iowa died Sunday, March 26, 1972, at a Sioux City hospital. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 29, 1972, at the Salem Lutheran Church at Rock Branch, with the Rev. Arnold Sommer officiating. Mrs. Lester Major was the organist. Charles Reinking sang "How Great Thou Art" and the congregation sang "Just As I Am".

Mrs. Johannsen, the former Emma Baeth was born November 15, 1892, near Schleswig, Iowa. The daughter of Hans and Marie Baeth, she was one of a family of fifteen.

She was married March 10, 1910, to Fredrick Johannsen. They farmed 2 years near Schleswig, 13 years near Moorhead, Iowa, and 23 years near Correctionville. Mr. Johannsen died in 1960 and Mrs. Johannsen had lived in Correctionville the last 10 years.

Survivors include two sons, Orville of Holsteln, Iowa, and Eldon of Correctionville; six brothers, John and Charles, both of Schleswig, Louie of Moorhead, Peter of Seattle, Harvy of San Diego and Robert of Pittsburgh, California; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were: James Johannsen, Harry Gainor, John Johannsen, Doug Deming, Donald Johannsen and Max Flathers. Interment was in Morgan Towship Cemetery at Schleswig.

Emma (Miller) Kropf (1880 - 1968)

Emma Miller, daughter of Hans Miller and Dorothea nee Miller, was born in Clinton county on April 20, 1880. As a small child, she came with her parents to Crawford county, living in Morgan township where she grew to womanhood.

She was married to Charles Kropf on Oct. 3, 1900. After their marriage they farmed in Ida, Woodbury, and Crawford counties with the exception of two years spent in Colorado. In 1942, they retired to make their home in Denison and here Mr. Kropf died in January, 1959.

Mrs. Kropf was taken to the local hospital three months ago as the result of a hip injury. She died Aug. 20 (1968) at the age of 88. Mrs. Kropf had affiliated with the Zion Lutheran church by the rite of confirmation in 1959.

Funeral services were held at the Huebner Funeral home on Aug. 23 with Rev. C. W. Schmidt officiating. Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist with selections being sung by the Lutheran Ladies Choir. Interment was made in the Lutheran cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers, Wayne Baker, James Kropf, Jack Pope, Kenneth Jahde, Robert Kropf and Albert Schwanz.

Survivors include four sons, Henry of Deloit, Arnold of Vail. Roy of Denison and Edward of Wall Lake, two daughters, Mrs. Lula Baker of Kiron and Mrs. Hilda Baker of Schleswig, 10 grand children and 17 great grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Janssen and Mrs. Letty Hansen, both of Schleswig.

Her husband, one son, Otto, eight brothers and sisters preceded her in death.

Emma (Arndt) Rath (1892 - 1972)

Emma (Arndt) Rath, daughter of) William Arndt and his wife Louise nee Reimers, was born Jan. 6, 1892 in Nishnabotna Township. At the age of ten she moved with her parents to Washington Township.

She was married to Otto Rath on Sept. 11, 1912, a marriage to which two daughters were born. After their marriage they farmed in Washington Township until 1953 when they came to make their home in Denison. Mrs. Rath had been in poor health for over a year and on Feb. 26 she was taken to the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison where she died on March 25 (1972).

Baptized in infancy, she was later confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Zion Lutheran Church of Denison where she was an active member of the church and of the Ladies Aid.

Her funeral service was held at Zion Lutheran Church on Tuesday morning, March 28 with the Rev. Carl W. Schmidt officiating. Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist and accompanied Henry Henningsen, soloist. Interment was made in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens, In the Garden of Gethsemane. with the following serving as pallbearers: Donald Arndt, Kenneth Early, LeRoy Lueth, Russell Nelson, Delmar Rath, Merlin Schoening.

Her death is survived by her husband, Otto; by two daughters: Erma, Mrs. Harry Meggers of Denison and Wilma. Mrs. Harold Burmeister of Sioux City, Iowa; by three grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Also surviving are the following sisters: Mrs. Ida Lueth of Manilla, Mrs. Tillie Spies of Sioux City, Mrs. Amelia Hahn, Mrs. Ella Maclennan and Mrs. Rozena Ketzback of Hinton, Iowa; by three brothers: Louis Arndt of Denver, Colo., Albert Arndt of Lawton, Iowa and John Arndt of Sioux City, Iowa. Her parents and one brother preceded her in death.

Huebner Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Emma Sophia Berendes (1893 - 1970)

Funeral services for Emma S. Berendes were held Wednesday, November 4, at the United Church of Christ with Rev. R.J. Ratzlaff officiating. Mrs. John Evers was the organist and Mrs. Ernie Grell and Mrs. Don Meyer sang "Beyond the Sunset" and the "Lord is My Shepherd".

Emma Sophia Berendes was born in Ida County February 2, 1893. Her parents were Fred Berendes and Dora nee Braase. She was confirmed July 24, 1925 by Rev. Mauch and was a member of the United Church of Christ, Schleswig, Iowa.

Miss Berendes was a resident of this community since the age of 17. She was a telephone operator for the Schleswig Telephone Co. for 48 years, having put in the first connection on the second board and taking down the last before the company was sold.

She was preceeded in death by her parents, 2 sisters and 1 brother and is survived by 2 sisters, Mrs. Ada Lakin, Cashmere, Washington and Mrs. Alma Zimmerman, Colton, California.

Emma Berendes passed away after a lingering illness November 1, 1970 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital. She reached the age of 77 years 8 months and 29 days.

Pallbearers were Dale Raitt, Charles Raitt, Roland Struck, Allen Jorgensen, Kenneth Berendes, Freddie Backhaus. Honorary Pallbearers were J. A. Rohwer, E.W. Claussen, Harry Wellendorf, Walter H. Schultz, and Dr. M. U. Broers. Interment was made in the Morgan Cemetery.
