Marcus Albert Gustave Stegemann (1892 - 1970)
Funeral services were held at the Sinn's funeral home in Schleswig on Monday, February 9 for Marcus A. Stegemann. The services were conducted by Rev. F. A. Wiese with Bonard Christiansen as soloist.Marcus Albert Gustave, son of Otto H. Stegemann and Wilhelmina nee Meyer was born south east of Schleswig on the home place May 9, 1892. He grew up in this community.
He was married to Edna Bielenberg by Pastor Frese of Zion Lutheran Church, Denison on February 17, 1920. He farmed the home place from 1920-1948. The family moved to Colorado for health reasons. He again farmed the home place from 1952-1955, when he retired to Schleswig.
He suffered a stroke not long after his retirement and his health has been very poor since then. He died at Crawford County Memorial Hospital on Thursday evening February 5th.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Martha Baker.
He is survived by his widow Edna; five children; LaMorn, wife of Albert Whitenack of Schleswig; Lee of Denison, Mary Ann, wife of Bernard Fertig of Wall Lake; Betty Jean, wife of Sam Malone of Dunlap, Roy of Denison; 20 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren.
He attained to 77 years, eight months, and 24 days.
Pallbearers were Sam Malone, Bernard Fertig, Roy Stegemann, Wm. Whitenack, Paul Whitenack and Albert Whitenack. Interment was in the Morgan Cemetery.

Margaret Louise (Hottendorf) Tibbetts (1922 - 1977)
Margaret Louise Tibbetts was born on Feb. 19, 1922 at Vail and died on Feb. 2, 1977 in Los Angeles, Calif., after a lingering illness. She was 55 years old.She was the daughter of Oscar and Hulda Hottendorf of Denison. Margaret received her education in Stockholm No. 9 County School, Manilla and Denison schools.
She was united in marriage to Harold Tibbetts on Dec. 25, 1939 in Denison, making their home in Denison and later moving to California.
Survivors are her mother, Hulda Hottendorf, Denison Care Center, her husband Harold, children Robert, Diane Naïve, Linda Votino and Jerri Hawkins all of California. Also nine grandchildren. Sisters, Clara (Mrs. LeRoy Winey) Denison, Lucille (Mrs. Chester Lingle), Mabel Tech of Dow City, and brother, Milroy Hottendorf of Denison.
Preceding her in death are her father, Oscar Hottendorf, brothers, LaVern, Raymond Robert. One sister, Rose Lien.
Pallbearers were Dennis Hawkins, Dan Perez, Anthony Votino, Chester Lingle, Jim Naïve, Vernon Hulse and Guy Scott.
Burial was made in the Dow City Cemetery. Darrell Argotsinger and Francis Harper Jr. officiated at the services. Mrs. Charles Smith acted as organist and Vincent Argotsinger as soloist. Pallbearers included, James Burggraaf, Craig Custer, William Lowry, Stephen Mitchell, Curtis Thompson and Richard Custer.
Memorials are preferred and should be directed to the Heart Fund. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Marie (Scheel) Braase (1894 - 1972)
Funeral services for Marie Braase were held Wednesday, May 17, 1972, at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, with the Rev. R. J. Ratzlaff officiating. Mrs. John Evers, organist, accompanied Mrs. Harlan Buffum and Mrs. Don Meyer as they sang, "Take Thou My Hand and Lead Me" and "In The Garden".Mrs. Braase was born in Berglund, Schleswig-Holstein Germany on August 9, 1894, to the late Meinrich Scheel and his wife Christine Thomsen. She came to this country as a young woman and married Julius Braase on July 15, 1922, here in Schleswig with the Rev. Wetzler officiating. They operated a meat market here for many years. Mr. Braase passed away in 1961.
Two years ago Marie Braase went to live at Eventide Home in Denison.
A faithful member of the United Church of Christ for many years, she was a member of the Women's Guild and had been a member of the German Choir of the congregation until it disbanded a number of years ago.
Mrs. Braase died Monday, May 15, 1972, after a brief illness. She attained the age of 77 years, 9 months and 6 days.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers and one sister.
Survivors are: her son Henry of Schleswig, two grandsons Randy and Bruce and two sisters Kathleen in Germany and Doretta in Florida.
Pallbearers were: John Evers, Hugo Dahms, Richard Hansen, Herbert Riessen, Donald Kroeger and Leonard Hollander. Interment was at the Morgan Township Cemetery.

Marie (Kiepe) Fredericks (1888 - 1965)
Mrs. Marie Fredericks died on Feb. 9, at the Memorial hospital. She had suffered injury due to a fall at her home which made her hospitalization necessary.She was born Marie Kiepe, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Kiepe in Monona county on Oct. 25, 1888. In early infancy she was baptized and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith in St. John Lutheran church at Charter Oak
.
On Oct. 24, 1907 she was married to Henry Fredericks and after their marriage they farmed in Crawford county. He died in 1935. Mrs. Fredericks has made her home in Denison since 1945.
Surviving are four daughters Elsie, Mrs. Walter Petersen of Denison, Anna of Denison, Lorena, Mrs. Rudolph Petersen of Dow City and Bernice, Mrs. Clarence Suntken of Ukiah, Calif; two sons Raymond of Denison and Harold of Marina, Calif.; ten grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, three brothers, Herman and Fred Kiepe of Ute and Charlie of Charter Oak and one sister, Mrs. Anna Mohr of Ute. One brother, Arthur, preceded her in death.
A member of the local Zion Lutheran church in Denison, her funeral was held at this church on Feb. 13, with Rev. C. W. Schmidt officiating. Music was by the Lutheran Ladies choir with Fred Greinke, organist. Interment was made in the Lutheran cemetery. Pallbearers were H. C. Kolls, H. C Fredericks, Robert J. Petersen, Harry Fredericks, Fred Mohr and Martine Kiepe. Huebner Funeral home was in charge of arrangements.

Marie L (Backhaus) Rusch (1897 - 1988)
Marie L. Rusch, age 90, of Mapleton, Iowa, died on Friday, February 19, 1988, at a Mapleton nursing home. Services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, February 22, 1988, at the St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Mapleton, Iowa, with the Reverend Richard Hempenius officiating. Burial was at the Morgan Township Cemetery at Schleswig, Iowa. Visitation was after 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 21, 1988, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at the Walter Funeral Home in Mapleton, Iowa.Mrs. Rusch, the former Marie Backhaus, was born on June 16, 1897, to Otto and Anna (Sibla) Backhaus at Schleswig, Iowa. She grew up in Schleswig, Iowa.
She married Herman Rusch on April 11, 1917, at Schleswig, Iowa. The couple farmed in the Schleswig community for two years, then moved to a farm near Mapleton, Iowa. They retired from farming in 1948, moving into the town of Mapleton, Iowa. Mr. Rusch died on June 26, 1974. The last five years she had spent at the Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton, Iowa.
She was a member of the St. Peter's United Church of Christ and a member of the church's women's fellowship. She was also a charter member of the Sunshine Club.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, one sister, and six brothers.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Lenhardt (Lavone) Fick of Spirit Lake, Iowa, and Mrs. Edwin (Darline) Clausen of Mapleton, Iowa; two sisters, Mrs. Dora Weiber and Mrs. Clara Jensen, both of Schleswig, Iowa; five grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Burdell Jensen, Freddie Backhaus, Wayne Kafton, Bob Weiber, Edwin Rusch, and Raymond Passick.

Adela Popken (1902 -1998 )
Adela Popken and was born March 26, 1902, in Schonberg, Germany to Herman and Johanns (Linde) Sievers. She died at Columbine Manor on Saturday, May 16, 1998, at the age of 96.
Mrs. Popken came to America from Germany with her mother, father, and siblings when she was nine months old. Her family settled near Buck Grove and Denison, Iowa, where they farmed for many years. On May 26, 1920, in Manila Iowa, she married Lewis H. Popken. They had two children, Lillian and Lewis. Fulfilling their lifelong dream, in 1944, they retired from their farm, bought a 240-acre ranch near Ward, Colorado, and moved to Boulder where they lived for more than 35 years. After her husband's death in 1981, Ms. Hopkins lived with her daughter and her son-in-law Lillian and Vernon Beerman, in Broomfield, Colorado, Roswell, New Mexico, Canon City, Colorado and, since 1995, Howard, Colorado.
Mrs.Popken loved the mountains and nature. She was adored by all and will be greatly missed. She is survived by children Lillian Beerman and her husband, Vernon, of Howard, Colorado, and Lewis Popken and his wife, Shirley, of Arlington, Texas; a sister, Anna Glau of Mountain Home, Arkansas, and a brother, Herbert Sievers of Omaha, Nebraska; grandchildren Linda Brown, Deby Buchanan, Karen Cook, and David Popken. Grandson Larry Beerman preceded her in death. She is also survived by five great grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Memorial services were held at 10 AM, Thursday, June 4, 1998 at the Huebner funeral home in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. Daniel Gifford officiated the service and graveside rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens, Denison. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Larry Bock singing "My Hope is Built on Nothing Less" and "Abide with Me" and congregational hymm "I Know that My Redeemer Lives". The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the Zion Lutheran Church, served by the Dorcas Society. The Huebner funeral home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Alma Dorothea Preul (1914 - 2006)
Alma Dorothea Preul was born December 7,1914 the daughter of John and Christina Schroeder Ketelsen. She died Monday, July 17, 2006 at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa, at the age of ninety-one.Alma was born in Willow Township, Charter Oak, Iowa. She was baptized in Christ on January 28, 1915 at St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak and later confirmed there on April 1, 1928 by Rev. A. Amstein. She received her education in a rural school near her home and St. John's Lutheran School in Charter Oak. After completing her education, she assisted her parents on the farm and other local families that needed help.
On February 20, 1935, Alma was united in marriage to Edward Preul and to this union three children were born. They lived on various farms near Charter Oak. In 1961, the couple purchased the Theresa Jurgensen farm near Ricketts, where they lived until their retirement in 1972 when they moved to Charter Oak.
Alma was a devoted life long member of St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. In her leisure time she enjoyed working in her yard and quilting.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward; her parents; one grandson, Richard Buschmann in infancy; two sisters, Laura Ketelsen in infancy and Alice Lorensen and her husband, Frank and one brother, Walter Ketelsen.
Survivors include one son, Robert Preul and his wife, Cheryl of Ridgecrest, California; two daughters, Norma Buschmann and her husband, Henry of Ute; Betty Schmidt and her husband, Dennis of Denison; eight grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Eldora Ketelsen of Charter Oak; many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, July 20, 2006 at the St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. Rev. Richard Merrill officiated the service with grave side rites held at the St. Paul's Cemetery, Charter Oak.
Art Beeck provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns, "Just as I Am, Without One Plea", "What a Friend We Have in Jesus", "Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me" and "How Great Thou Art". Honorary pallbearers were: Brandon Throckmorton, Brittany Throckmorton, Kenleigh Buschmann, Kenton Buschmann, Jeremy Buschmann, Keagin Buschmann, Brady Buschmann, Justin Buschmann, Kallee Buschmann, Christopher Preul, Austin Shadden, Desirae Shadden, Jordan Schmidt, Taylor Schmidt, Randall Preul, Elijah Shadden, Corinne Preul, Jacob Schmidt and Lilly Shadden. Those serving as pallbearers were: Randy Buschmann, Patty Throckmorton, Terry Buschmann, Alan Buschmann, Brenda Schmidt, Brian Schmidt, Russell Preul and Rodney Preul. Rev. Eugene Ernst officiated at the 7:00 p.m. Prayer Service on Wednesday.
The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak was in charge of arrangements.

Alma O. (Meggers) Petersen (1909 - 1992)
Alma O. Petersen, the daughter of Frederick Sievers and Christine Meggers was born Jan. 29, 1907 in Hanover Twp., Crawford County, Ia. She was baptized June 13, 1909 and confirmed at age 16 from the Zion Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. She was educated in rural schools, Charter Oak.On Feb. 26, 1931, Alma was united in marriage to John D. Petersen at Zion Lutheran Parsonage, Denison. This this union, two children were born, Amos and Lois. They farmed in the Denison area and moved to Westside in 1943 and then to Lake View in 1963. Alma was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid Society, Lake View. She also enjoyed gardening.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John, in 1983; four brothers and three sisters.
Survivors include one son, Amos Petersen of Lake View; one daughter, Lois Mumm and her husband, George of Iowa Falls; grandchildren, Brad Mumm and his wife, Brenda of Iowa Falls; Bruce Mumm and his wife, Christie of Bronxville, N.Y., Christine Mumm of Iowa Falls; great granddaughters, Nicole Mumm of Iowa Falls and Ellen Mumm of Bronxville, N.Y.; two sisters, Edna Eckhoff of Lake View and Lena Neddermeyer of Denison; one brother, Herbert Sievers and his wife, Lola of Ute; one sister-in-law, Wilma Sievers of Kiron.
Alma passed away May 1, 1992 at Loring Hospital in Sac City, Ia. Services were held at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Lake View at 2 p.m. Monday, May 4 with Pastor H.W. Kramer officiating. Music was congregational singing with Mrs. Raymond Freese as organist. Flower committee was Mrs. James Stock and Mrs. Dave Coe. Pallbearers were Minard Petersen, Delano Petersen, Willis Petersen, Larry Sievers, Edward Eckhoff, and Chris Neddermeyer. Interment was in Westside Cemetery,

Alvin A. Petersen (1915 - 1995)
Alvin A. Petersen, 80, of Seaside, Calif., died Friday of cancer at his home. Born March 12, 1915, in Denison, he lived for the past 38 years in Seaside where he worked as a groundskeeper and maintenance employee for the school district. He was a member of the Senior Citizens Center council before his retirement.Surviving are his wife, Violet; two sons, Mervin of Kiron and Richard of Salinas, Calif.; a daughter, Mary Ellen Styer of Seaside; a brother, Elder; and 11 great grandchildren.

Funeral services for Amanda Bramstedt were held Monday morning, May 22, 1972, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig with Rev. F. A. Wiese officiating. Mrs. Ray Schmidt was the organist. The congregation sang "Asleep In Jesus" and the choir sang "Be Still, My Soul".Amanda Wilhelmine, daughter of Johann Holtorf and his wife Friedericke Peters was born at Lyons, Clinton County, Iowa or May 14, 1890. She was baptized December 13, 1890. The family moved to Crawford County. She was confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church of Charter Oak on the 4th of January 1911, by Rev. A. Milstein
She was married March 15, 1911 to Fred Bramstedt at Onawa, Iowa in the Lutheran Church The couple, farmed near Ute for some time. They moved to the Schleswig community in 1925 and farmed here. In 1960, the couple retired and made their home in Schleswig. Her husband Fred died in 1963. Since the death of her husband she lived in their home and for the past year stayed much of the time with her daughter Bernice.
Because of failing health, she entered the Crawford County Memorial Hospital at
Denison and underwent surgery. She died there on May 19, 1972. She attained to 82 years and 5 days. She held membership in the Lutheran Church all of her life.
She is survived by one daughter Bernice, wife of Everett Gronau of Kiron two sisters Rosa Knutzen of Ute and Ella, wife of Otto Keller of Schleswig, and one brother John of Denison.
Pallbearers were: Edgar Blume, Wilbert Jansen, Francis Quandt, Erwin Knutzen, Dad Borcherdt and Martin Schnoor. Interment was in Morgan Cemetery at Schleswig.

Funeral services for Mrs August Ambria Kastner nee Krohnke were held August 31, 1966 at the United Church of Christ, Schleswig, Iowa. with Rev. R. J. Ratzlaff officiating. Mrs Broder Petersen was the organist accompanying a duet by Barbara and Janet Buffum. The Hymns were "Beyond The Sunset" and "Abide with Me."Ambria Krohnke was born in Morgan Township August 29, 1883 to Claus Krohnke and Mary nee Heesch.
She was united in marriage to August Kastner March 1, 1905 in Denison, Iowa. They resided on a farm in Otter Creek Township from 1905 to 1913 then Morgan Township until 1951 when they moved to the town of Schleswig.
She was preceded in death by her husband August Kastner, two brothers, Julius and Adam Krohnke. She is survived by one son, Leonard of Schleswig, Mrs Anna Hamann and Edward Krohnke of Schleswig and Mrs Bertha Petersen of Sutherland, three grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
She passed away August 28, 1966, after a lingering illness. Interment was at the Morgan Township Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jacob Volkmann, Frank Peters, Loren Peters, Frank Jensen, Burdell Jensen and Fred Miller.

Andrew Clausen (1878 - 1963)
Funeral services for Andrew Clausen Sr. were held Saturday, January 26 (1963) at the United Church of Christ, Rev. Walter Baumgartner read the following obituary:Andrew Clausen, son of Frederick and Fredricka Clausen was born, August 21, 1878, on the island of Fehrmarn, Germany. At the age of 14 he came to America. For a few years he worked on a farm as a hired man. On June 2, 1904, he was united in marriage to Kathrine Iversen. To this union 5 sons and two daughters were born. Mr. and Mrs. Clausen were engaged in farming near Schleswig. In 1946, they moved to the town Schleswig. They observed their golden wedding anniversary in 1954.
After the death of his wife, in November 1959, Mr. Clausen and made his home with his sons, Herbert and Andrew. He enjoyed good health until about 10 days ago on Tuesday afternoon, he was taken to the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, where he passed away quietly, Thursday morning.
Mr. Clausen and was baptized in Germany and confirmed in the Grant Township Lutheran church and later became a member of the United Church of Christ.
He is survived by four sons; Herbert, Andrew, Leonard and Paul all of Schleswig and two daughters: Frieda, Mrs. Edgar Else of Schleswig and Anna, Mrs. Leonard Teut of Charter Oak, 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Catherine Gottburg of Charter Oak; one brother, Dan Clausen of Schleswig.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathrine, one son, Jürgen and one great-granddaughter, three brothers and one sister.
Burial was made in the Morgan Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Leon Clausen and, Verdell Clausen and, Delbert Clausen and, Larry Beeck, Lowell Teut, and Milford Schultz.

Anna Christina Else (1898 - 1987)
Anna Christina Else was born on March 21, 1898 near Buck Grove, Iowa the daughter of Jess Lorensen and Anna Tams Lorensen. She died on February 19, 1987 at the Hall Mark Care Center of Omaha, Neb., at the age of 88 years, 11 months and 30 days.Anna spent her early years on a farm near Buck Grove where she attended rural schools. She helped in the home caring for younger brothers and sisters. On August 8, 1923 she was united in marriage to Arthur Else of Schleswig, in Schleswig. To this union three children were born. They made their home in Schleswig until 1946. Anna then moved to Denison where she made her home with a sister until 1972 when she moved to Omaha, Nebraska. She lived in the Paxton Manor in Omaha for a number of years. She entered the Hall Mark Care Center in Omaha in April of 1986.
In addition to her parents, Anna was preceded in death by one son David Ellis, two sisters and two brothers.
Survivors include her daughters, Elaine and her husband John Cookson of Paramount, California and Phyllis and her husband, Dwayne Andresen of Omaha, Nebraska, three grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, three brothers, John Lorensen of Denison, Abel Lorensen of Charter Oak and Herman and his wife Marie Lorensen of Jefferson, and one sister Adelia Rosburg of Charter Oak
Funeral services were held February 23, at 10:30 AM at the Huebner funeral home in Denison. Dr. L Scott Woodworth officiated at the services. Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery at Denison. Serving as pallbearers were Scott Andresen, Michael McCutchen, Michael Kudym, James Pester, Herman Rosburg, and Michael Rosburg. Funeral services were under the direction of the Huebner funeral home of Denison.

"The Lord's My Shepherd" and "In the Garden." They were accompanied on the organ by Mrs Broder Petersen. Rev. R. J. Ratzlaff read the following obituary.Anna Emelia Friedrichsen was born May 24, 1887 in Hayes township, Ida county. She was the daughter of Claus Brockmann and his wife Kathrina (Lahrsen). She married Adolph Wellendorf or March 4, 1908. He died in 1919. she was remarried to Herman Friedrichsen, August 30, 1922. He died in 1951.
She died at her home in Schleswig on August 18th after a lingering illness. She was 78 years, two months and 24 days old. She lived her entire life in the Schleswig community, and it town for 31 years. She was a member of the United Church of Christ.
She is survived by a daughter, Lillian Grill, a son, Herman Wellendorf, two sisters, Fulda Petersen, Ella Friedrichsen, and a brother, Emil Brockmann, Ten grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Burial was made in the Morgan cemetery. The pallbearers were Elmer Wellendorf, Hans Wellendoff, Harvey Wellendorf, Henry Petersen. Emil Petersen and LeRoy Friedrichsen.

Anna Marie Rasmussen (1877 - 1974)
Funeral services for Anna Marie Rasmussen of Manilla were held on Saturday, May 11, at the Trinity Lutheran hurch, Manilla, Rev. Edward F. Heinicke officiated. Burial was at the Astor Cemetery, near Manilla.Anna Marie Rasmussen, was born on July 7,1877 in Denmark. She married John E. Rasmussen in Denmark in 1898 after which they came to the United States and settled near Astor, Iowa.
Her husband was employed by the Milwaukee Railroad and later they farmed until the death of her husband in 1932. Anna then moved to Manilla in 1941and had lived in her own home until November, 1973, when she moved in with her daughter and later made her home with her son in Manilla where she died Thursday morning, May 9, 1974.
Anna was a member of them Trinity Lutheran church in Manilla. Besides her husband, John, she was preceded in death by a son in infancy, two grandsons, her parents, three brothers and two sisters.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Olga Christensen of Manila, a son, Chris Rasmussen of Manila, seven grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and seven great great grandchildren.

Marie Margaret (Hargens) Steckelberg (1872 - 1962)
Manilla - Funeral services were held March 11 at the Trinity Lutheran church in Manilla for Mrs. Marie Margaret Steckelberg, who had lived in this vicinity since coming from Germany to America in 1891. Rev. R. W. Natzke officiated.Marie Margaret was second oldest child of Peter and Anna Hargens, born Dec. 26, 1872 at Marne, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. On April 5, 1889 her family came to America and settled at Denison.
On Nov. 2, 1891 she married Fritz William Steckelberg and this union was blessed with five sons and one daughter. Mrs. Steckelberg was one of the first members of the Ladies Aid Society of Trinity Lutheran church and remained a member throughout her life. Mr. and Mrs. Steckelberg lived in Walkertown until they moved to the Friendship home in Audubon in February 1959. Mrs. Steckelberg had been ill about three weeks before her death on March 9. She was 89 years, 2 months and 11 days at a time.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers, one grandchild and one great grandchild.
She is survived by three brothers, Chris and Herman Hargens of Manning, Henry Hargens of Sidney, Neb., three sisters, Annie Benninghas of Sidney, Neb., Mrs. Lena Meyers of Arcadia, Mrs. Bertha Jarvis of San Diego, Calif.; five sons, Henry of San Diego, Calif., Edward of Sioux City, Fred of Sioux City, William of Denison and Meinhardt of Manilla, and one daughter, Mrs. Don Champion of Denison; 18 grandchildren, 48 great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren besides other relatives and friends.

Martha Anna Marie (Koch) Christiansen (1898 - 1986)
Martha Anna Marie Christiansen was born April 10, 1898 in Charter Oak Township, Iowa, the daughter of Jurgen and Marie Thies Koch. She died September 19, 1986, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, at the age of 88 years, five months and nine days.Martha spent her early years on a farm near Charter Oak. After completing her early childhood education at St. John's Lutheran School, she went to Denison where she did domestic work for many families.
On September 12, 1917, Martha was united in marriage to Paul C. Christiansen at St. John's Lutheran Church. Together they made their home on a farm east of Charter Oak and later moved to a farm near Schleswig. In March 1967 they retired and moved to Charter Oak where they lived together for ten years. In December, 1977 her husband Paul died. Martha continued to live in Charter Oak until 1984 at which time she entered Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison where she has made her home.
Martha was baptized on May 8, 1898 and Confirmed on April 9, 1911 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak by the Rev. Amstein. She was a long time member of St. John's and St. John's Ladies Aid.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Martha was preceded in death by one son, Carol who died in 1954, and four sisters.
Survivors include her two sons: Paul and his wife Marge of Herman, Ne., La Verne and his wife Laverne of Denison; three grandchildren, three great grandchildren, two step grandchildren and five step great grandchildren; one sister, Esther, Mrs. Herbert Greene of Charter Oak and one brother Edgar Koch of Sioux City. Other relatives including many cousins from Denmark, nieces, nephews and many friends.
Funeral services were held September 22, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. Burial was in the St. John's Cemetery. The Rev. L. C. Gebhardt officiated at the services. Mrs. Paul Clausen served as organist with the St. John's Ladies Choir singing. Serving as pallbearers were: Howard Ahrenholtz, Norman E. Christiansen, Charles Greene, Ervin P. Kuhlmann, William Kunze, Edgar Koch Jr., Donald Koch, Duane A. Smith and James Platt. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Charter Oak.

Martha (Kusch) Bottger (1887 - 1965)
Funeral services were held for Martha Bottger on Saturday, August 21, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church. The choir sang "Be Still My Soul" and the congregation sang "The Lord's My Shepherd." Mrs Ray Schmidt accompanied them on the organ. Rev. F. A. Wiese read the following obituary:Martha Kusch, daughter of Mr and Mrs Albert Kusch was born on February 4, 1887 in West Prussia, Germany. As a child, she came to the United States with her parents and lived in Crawford County.
She was united in marriage to Johannes Bottger, November 28, 1912. The couple lived on a farm in Morgan Township until 1941, when they moved to Schleswig. The last few years, her health had been failing. She recently entered the Crawford County Memorial Hospital and died on Wednesday evening, August 18th (1965).
She is survived by the following children: Otto of Yucaipa, California, Raymond of Council Bluffs, Johannes and Irmgard Tibbs of Schleswig. One grandson Tom Tibbs of Schleswig. Two sisters: Ida, wife of William Averman of Gladbrook, Iowa and Mrs Greta Finnern of Omaha.
She was preceded in death by her husband Johannes who died in June, 1960. One sister and three brothers. One son Alfred and two daughters Olga and Hilda.
She attained 78 years, 6 months and 14 days.
Pallbearers were John Jakso, Reynold Johannsen, Henry Maak, Nick Wilken, Hugo Brodersen and Emil Thul. Interment was in Morgan cemetery.
Those attending the funeral from a distance were Mrs Albert Kusch, Mr and Mrs Hans Sievers, Mrs Fred Gust, Mrs Julius Finnern, Robert Finnern, Mr and Mrs Loren Dewey and granddaughter, Mrs Ida Bielenberg and Mrs Minnie Williams all of Omaha. Those from Gladbrook were Mr and Mrs William Averman, Mr and Mrs Charles King and Bill King, Raymond Bottger, Mr and Mrs Ben Trezeciak and Mrs Pete Trezeciak of Council Bluffs, Martha Gosch of Denison; Mr and Mrs Clifford Creese and granddaughter, and Mrs Albert Keller of Charter Oak; Mr and Mrs Charles Riley of Ute.

Martha Emily (Meyer) Claussen (1906 - 1980)
Martha Emily Claussen was born Feb. 23, 1906, at Soldier Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the daughter of August and Dora Hamann Meyer. She died Apr. 20, 1980 at the Bishop Clarkson Hospital, Omaha, Neb., at the age of 74.Martha was raised on a family farm in Soldier Township. She was baptized as an infant and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She received her formal education in the Immanuel Lutheran School at Soldier Township.
On May 10, 1931, Martha was united in marriage to Claus Claussen at Immanuel Lutheran Church at Soldier Township. They made their home in Schleswig. Martha was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig and a member of the Immanuel Ladies Aid.
In addition to her parents, Martha was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.
Survivors include her husband Claus of Schleswig, one son Ronald of Spirit Lake, one daughter, Laurene, Mrs. Roland Meeves, of Manning and five grandchildren. Also by one brother Henry Meyer of Ricketts and two sisters, Mrs. Dora Neubauer of Schleswig and Mrs. Minna Gosch of Ute.
Funeral services were held Apr. 23 at 10:30 a.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig, the Rev. Theodore Letzring officiated at the services. Pallbearers included Robert Bumann, Peter Pickel, Richard Meyer, Richard Clark, Neil Moeller and Lance Nelson. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Schleswig.

Martin Flanigan (1901 - 1971)
Funeral services for Martin Flanigan, 70, of Charter Oak, who died December 25, 1971, at his residence, were held on Monday, December 27, 1971, at the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Charter Oak with the Rev. Robert A. Thiele officiating. Burial was in the St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery at Danbury.Mr. Flanigan was born December 4, 1901, at Lisdeen, County Claire, Ireland. He moved to Crawford County, Iowa, in 1920, and was a farmer. Martin was married to Henrietta Murphy on May 17, 1930, in Sioux City. He was a Soldier Township School Board member for several years.
Survivors include: his widow; three sons, Joseph and Donald both of Mapleton, and Robert of Charter Oak; a daughter, Mrs. Joanne Seufert of Ute; three brothers, Simon and Tom both in Ireland and Patrick of New York City; a sister, Mrs. Nora Russell in Ireland and 11 grandchildren.

Marvin W. Schinkel (1921 - 1974)
Marvin W. Schinkel, son of Herman and Julie Christiansen Schinkel was born August 24, 1921 in Winnetoon, Nebraska. As a small child the family moved to rural Denison to make their home.He attended the Denison School System before entering the U.S. Marine Corp in 1941. While in the service he attended the Pratt Whitney Aeronautical Institute in Kansas City, and New Haven, Connecticut, and served in the Asiatic-Pacific area during World War Two.
He was united in marriage to Henrietta Lane in Santa Ana, California in January of 1944. After the War they returned to the Denison area to make their home until moving to Omaha, Nebraska. To this union was born the following children - Cheryl, Victoria, Phillip, Rebecca, Jami, Tammy, Robin and Ronald. Marvin passed away in Minneapolis, Minn., October 20, 1974.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and by a granddaughter, Jennifer Lynn Schinkel.
He is survived by his wife Henrietta, his children Cheryl, Mrs. Roger Rubel of Omaha, Victoria, Mrs. John Pierce of Anniston, Alabama, Phillip of Denison, Rebecca, Mrs. Kenneth Coon, Jami, Mrs. Howard Konken, Tammy, Robin and Ronald all of Omaha, Nebraska, eight grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Harold Weiss, of Charter Oak and Mrs. Francis Landgraf of Omaha, Nebraska, other relatives and many friends.

Mary Jane (Winthrow) Riley (1872 - 1963)
Mrs. Mary Jane Riley, daughter of John and Lovey Winthrow, was born Jan. 21, 1872 at Johnsonville, Ill.On July 23, 1897 she was united in marriage to William Riley. They lived in Illinois for 16 years before moving to Iowa. (Five daughters were born to this union.) Mrs. Riley lived in Denison until three years ago. At that time she came to Schleswig, where she made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Franzek. During the past year she was cared for by Mrs. Esther Crook in Kiron.
She died in the Crawford County hospital on Aug. 18, (1963) at the age of 91 years, six months and 26 days. Mrs. Riley united with the Christian church through baptism in 1912. She was received as a member of the United Church of Christ at Schleswig in April of 1962.
Survivors are four daughters, Mrs. Mayme Winey of Denison, Mrs. Charles Franzek of Schleswig, Mrs. Earl Andresen of Schleswig and Mrs. Godfrey Preuss of Vail. Three sons-in-law. Nine grandchildren. Seventeen great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her husband in 1956, one daughter, four sisters and one brother and her parents.
Funeral services were held Aug. 20, in the Huebner Funeral Home at 2 p. m.
Rev. Walter Baumgartner officiated. Mrs. Ernie Grell and Mrs. Donald Myers, soloist, accompanied by Mrs. John Evers, organist. Pallbearers were Robert Andresen, Stanley Bukacek, Duane Osterlund, Oral Riley, Norman Schoenfeldt and Bob Tellgren. Interment was in the Oakland cemetery.

Mary Sophie (Bendixen) Struck (1888 - 1968)
Funeral services for Mary Sophie Struck were held at the United Church of Christ at Schleswig on Tuesday, November 5, 1968 with Rev. R. J. Ratzlaff officiating. Music for the service was provided by Mrs. Ernie Grell and Mrs. Ray Martens with Mrs. John Evers as accompanist. The hymns which were sung were, "Abide With Me" and "The Lord Is My Shepherd".Mary Sophie Struck (nee Bendixen) was born on March 9, 1888 in Ida County, daughter of Fred and Maria Prosch Bendixen. She was baptized in September, 1889, and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in 1908 by Pastor Netzeler.
On February 16, 1910 she was married to Julius Struck. They farmed in the Schleswig area until 1941, when they moved into Schleswig. On February 16, 1960 they had the honor of celebrating their Golden Wedding anniversary. Mrs. Struck was a member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig.
She passed away at Claudia's Nursing Home at Denison on Saturday afternoon, November 2, 1968 at the age of eighty, after a lingering illness.
Survivors are her husband, Julius, three sons, Victor and Ralph of Schleswig, and Milton of Fresno, California, twelve grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, four sisters, Annie Baeth (Mrs. Hans), Valley City, North Dakota, Emma Dobbert of Valley City, North Dakota, Bertha Jessen of Corona, California and Martha Lochmiller of Denison. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, John Bendixen.
Pallbearers were Otto Kuehl, Ernie Grell, Frank Jensen, Roland Struck, Erwin Bendixen and Milton Wassgren. Interment was made at the Morgan Cemetery.

Mattie (Krohnke) Bielenberg (1882 - 1965)
Funeral services for Mrs. Mattie Bielenberg, who died Saturday, December 4, were held at the United Church of Christ on Monday, December 6. Rev. R J Ratzlaff officiated. Mrs John Evers organist accompanied Mrs Harlan Buffum and Mrs Donald Meyer who sang, "In The Garden" and "Rock of Ages."Mattie Bielenberg, nee Krohnke was a daughter of Henry and Ana Krohnke, born on September 5, 1882 in Crawford county. She was united in marriage to William H. Bielenberg on December 24, 1905. To this union was born three sons. Mattie was a member of the United Church of Christ. She was known as a kind, hardworking person. One who accepted life as it was and lived it to its fullest.
She died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison on December 4 (1965). She attained the age of 83 years and 3 months.
Survivors included three sons; Henry of Arnsas Pass, Texas, Ben of Marble Falls, Texas and Bart of Schleswig and 4 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, two sisters: Gustie, Mrs William Bumann and Amelia Krohnke and John H. Krohnke.
Pallbearers were Ray Abbe, John Evers, Albert Teut, Ed Reinking, Broder Petersen and E J Stoltenberg. Interment was in Morgan cemetery.

Maureen Elsie (Baak) Petersen (1941 - 2006)
Maureen Elsie Petersen was born August 13, 1941, the daughter of Edward and Elsie Hesse Baak. She died Sunday, April 9, 2006 at Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of sixty-four.Maureen was born on a farm near Charter Oak, Iowa and was baptized in Christ August 31, 1941 and confirmed April 3, 1955 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Soldier Township, Charter Oak. She received her elementary education in a rural school near her home in Soldier Township and attended Charter Oak High School, graduating with the class of 1959. After school, she began working as a bookkeeper at Farmers Savings Bank in Charter Oak.
On August 21, 1960, she was united in marriage to Larry Petersen at St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. The couple made their home in Charter Oak and were blessed with three children.
She later worked at Farmers State Bank in Ricketts until 1971, when the couple moved to Denver, Colorado. They returned to Charter Oak in January of 1976, and Maureen worked with her father as a bookkeeper. She and Larry purchased the Town & Country Cafe in Charter Oak and later, purchased the Oaks Lanes Lounge & Cafe, which they ran until 1984. She also worked as a bookkeeper for her husband at Petersen Motor & Repair.
In her spare time, Maureen enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She also enjoyed camping and her beloved dog, Honey. She was an excellent cook and an avid reader. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother and sister, Beverly and Richard in infancy; and one sister-in-law, Rhoda Petersen.
She is survived by her husband, Larry; two daughters, Victoria Ellwein and her husband, Bill of Omaha; and Robin of Charter Oak; one son, Dean of Lincoln, Nebraska; her stepmother, Phyllis Baak of Charter Oak; four sisters: Kathleen Schau and her husband, Ervin of Cedar Rapids; Drene Briggle and her husband, Paul of Ricketts; Pam Tripp and her husband, Tony of Charter Oak; and Tami Baak of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; four brothers: Ronald Gloede and his wife, Judith of Charter Oak; Roger Gloede and his wife, Tracy of North Sioux City, South Dakota; Allen Gloede of Ricketts; and Randy Gloede of Las Vegas, Nevada; her mother-in-law, Caroline Petersen of Charter Oak; one brother-in-law, Lloyd Petersen of Apple Valley, Minnesota; one sister-in-law, LaVonne Stamp and her husband, LeRoy of Elkhorn, Nebraska; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 12, 2006 at St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. Richard Merrill officiated the services and grave side rites held at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Soldier Township, Charter Oak, Iowa. Organist Art Beeck provided the organ accompaniment for the congregational hymns, "How Great Thou Art", "I'm But A Stranger Here" and "I Know that My Redeemer Lives". Those serving as pallbearers were: Cory Neddermeyer, Mark Heffernan, Jake Schneider, Allan Neddermeyer, John Heffernan, and Eric Schneider. A Prayer Service was held 6 p.m., Tuesday at the Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them in fellowship and lunch served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak was in charge of the arrangements.

Max Kropf (1880 - 1969)
Max Kropf was the son of Jacob and Louise (Boysen) Kropf. He was born in East Boyer township on April 25, 1880. His entire life was spent in Crawford county where he farmed for a number of years later moving to Denison and entered in the real estate and insurance business from which he retired several years ago.On Aug. 12, 1901 he married Agnes Grill. This union was blessed with two daughters, Ladona Kropf who made her home with her father and Mrs. Frances Evans of Otho. Mr. Kropf died at the Denison Hospital on March 11 at the age of 88 years.
He was preceded in death by his wife, two infant grandsons, his parents, four brothers, and four sisters.
Survivors include his daughters, two brothers, Harry of Coon Rapids and Walter of Carnarvon, three sisters, Mrs. Josephine Abbott of Omaha, Mrs. Lyle (Lizzie) Van Fleet of Gordon, Neb., and Mrs. Della Bartels of Council Bluffs.
Funeral services were held March 14 at 2 p. m. at the Huebner Funeral Home with Rev. Jerod Irvin officiating. Pallbearers were Lowell Vergith, F. J. Neubauer, Vincent Schneider, John Lorenzen, Merlin Nissen, and Lester Tenhulzen. Interment was in the Oakland cemetery with Huebner Funeral home in charge.

Melroy Ernst (1915 - 1977)
Melroy Ernst was born on Feb. 26, 1915 at Schleswig, the son of Rudolph and Helen Ernst. He died at his home in Schleswig on Saturday afternoon, June 4, 1977 at the age of 62. As a young boy he was raised on the family farm and received his education in the rural schools near Schleswig.On March 12, 1955 he was united in marriage to Anna Thomsen at Schleswig. Together they made their home on the farm where they were blessed with three daughters. Melroy continued to raise his family and live on the farm after his wife Anna died in 1966. Later he established a residence in Schleswig where he lived in the winter months returning to the farm in the spring and summer.
In addition to his wife, Melroy was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include, three daughters, Kandra, Mrs. Bill Kluver, Marcia, Mrs. Doug Laumbach and Rhonda Ernst, all of Schleswig. Also by one sister Mrs. Garnet Bruhn of Mapleton.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, June 7, at 10:00 A.M. at the United Church of Christ. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery, Schleswig. The Rev. Fred Moore officiated at the services. Pallbearers were Gary Thomsen, LaVerne Thomsen, Charles Thomsen, Victor Thomsen, Fred Thomsen and Pat McCaffery. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Sinn Huebner Funeral Home, Schleswig.

Merlin "Mert" Rusch (1936 - 1988)
Merlin "Mert" Rusch was born on a farm near Schleswig, Iowa, November 27, 1936, the son of Harvey and Helma Laumbach Rusch. He was baptized March 14, 1937, at Friedens Church in Schleswig and confirmed at the same church April 6, 1953. He was raised on the farm and received his education in the rural and Ida Grove Schools.After his schooling, he helped on the farm until beginning employment with the Ida County Road Department. For a period of eight years, from November 7, 1955, until being discharged November 6, 1963, Mert served in the Army National Guard of Iowa, Company C, 2nd Mechanical Battalion, 133rd Infantry at Ida Grove, Iowa, three years as a private and the last five years as a sergeant. In 1956, Mert began employment with the Iowa Department of Transportation in Denison where he was an inspector.
On July 10, 1958, Mert was united in marriage with Theonne Husted at St. John's Lutheran Church in Battle Creek. They made their home in Denison where he continued his employment with the D.O.T. until his death.
Mert died Saturday afternoon, January 9, 1988, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa, having attained the age of 51 years, 1 month and 12 days.
He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and the Voters Assembly of the church. During his lifetime, Mert enjoyed being outside and loved to hunt and fish. With that love of nature, he held memberships in the Denison chapters of Pheasants Forever, Ducks Unlimited, the National Rifleman's Association and the Izaak Walton League.
Mert was preceded in death by one daughter, Jean Ann Rusch, who died May 8, 1960, one brother, Larry Ray Rusch, and one sister, Lois Mae Rusch, both who died in infancy.
He is survived by his wife, Theonne Rusch of Denison, one son, Ross Rusch of Denison, one daughter, Raquel Rusch of Denison, his parents, Harvey and Helma Rusch of Denison, and two sisters, Beverly and her husband, Duane Wunschel of Wall Lake, and Janice and her husband, Ray Harris of Berryville, Arkansas. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, January 12, 1988, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, with the Rev. Kurt R. Kaiser officiating. Music for the service was provided by Mr. and Mrs. Henry Henningsen singing "Beautiful Savior" and "Take My Hand Precious Lord". The congregation sang "I Know That My Redeemer Lives" with Renee Miller and Julie Brown, descant. Karen Kahl served as organist.
Honorary bearers were Michael Nollan, Randy Nollan, Roger Rusch, Rick Wunschel, Jayme Bresnahan and Christopher Lee. Casket bearers included Darrell Moeller, Phil Sauvago, Keith Siefken, Allan Preul, Kenneth Davis, James Hart, Russell Bennigsdorf and Robert Rollefson. Interment with graveside military honors provided by the Ninus L. Hunt V.F.W. Post 2504, Denison, was in the Morgan Township Cemetery at Schleswig.

Merlin E. Voss (1919 - 1985)
Merlin E. Voss, 65, Onawa, Iowa died April 22, 1985 at Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa.He was born May 31, 1919, at Ricketts to Ernest and Emma Carstens Voss. On May 17, 1940 he was united in marriage to Hazel Pollock at Dakota City, Neb. During World War II he served with the U.S. Army in Europe. The couple lived at Denison and Ida Grove before moving to Onawa in 1963. He was a farmer and auto body repairman before retiring in 1969. He was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church, David McNeill American Legion Post No. 129, and Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie No. 2270, all of Onawa.
Survivors include his wife, Hazel; three sons, Randall of Cherokee, Terry of Des Moines and Bill of Onawa; one daughter, Jane Voss of Bloomington, Minn.; his mother, Mrs. Emma Voss of Denison; one sister, Mrs. James (Eunice) Buchholz of Carroll and 10 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father.
Services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 24, at Faith Lutheran Church in Onawa with Pastor Quentin Quanbeck officiating. Mrs. Syril Brown, the organist, accompanied Steve Johnson who sang, "How Great Thou Art" and "The Old Rugged Cross." Pallbearers were Don Loomis, Clifford "Butch" Harding, Roy Wakehouse, Jeff Bean, Keith Richardson and Bill Collison. Rosa (Hildebrandt) Jaacks (1884 - 1969)
Rosa Hildebrandt, the daughter of John and Sophie (Taggen) Hildebrandt, was born in Cook County, Ill. on June 21, 1884. In early infancy she was baptized and later affiliated with the Lutheran Church by the rite of Confirmation. At the age of 16 she came with her parents to live in Crawford County, making their home in Hanover Township.On March 22, 1905 she was married to Emil Jaacks and to this marriage three children were born. They farmed in Goodrich Township until retiring to make their home in Denison in 1933. Mr. Jaacks preceded her in death on Dec. 13, 1962.
Since Sept., 1965 she had been a resident at the Eventide Home for the aged. She had been in failing health in recent months and had been hospitalized at various times, coming to the Memorial Hospital on Dec. 29 where she passed away Friday morning, Jan. 3 (1969).
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Sophie Schroeder and a son Walter of Denison, eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her husband, one son, Henry Jaacks, one grandchild and four sisters.
Her funeral service was held at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison on Monday, Jan. 6 with the Rev. C. W. Schmidt in charge of the rites. Hymns were sung by the Ladies Choir with Mrs. Fred Rabie serving as organist. She was laid to rest in the Oakland Cemetery with the following serving as bearers: John Boettger, Henry Eggert, Edward Meggers, John Frank, Meinhardt Jaacks and Emil Meggers. Huebner Service.

Rose (Trinkelbach) Kollbaum (1890 - 1966)
Kiron - Funeral services were held Feb. 2, for Mrs. Fred Kollbaum, 76, the former Rose Trinkelbach, at the St. Paul's Lutheran church in Ida Grove with Rev. Alfred Pautsch officiating. Interment was in the Ida Grove cemetery. Pallbearers included Mark Kollbaum, Richard Kollbaum, Norman Boger, Douglas Kollbaum, Delmar Johnson and Jerry Wissink.Survivors include her husband, eight daughters, Marie (Mrs. Henry Prussing) of Schleswig, Hilda (Mrs. Andrew Paulson) of Oto, Esther (Mrs. Bernard Lackman) of Denison, Margaret (Mrs. Clifford Wissink) of Storm Lake, Berdena (Mrs. Earl Boger) of Arthur, Irene (Mrs. Alvin Johnson), Rose (Mrs. Melvin Nielson), and Mabel (Mrs. Herman Christiansens) all of Ida Grove; four sons, Fred, Jr., and Roy of Kiron, Alvin of Battle Creek and John of Storm Lake; 36 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and three sisters, Mrs. Herman Mildenstein of Ida Grove, Mrs. Ed Rehm of Lincoln, Neb., and Mrs. Edward Janke of Newell, S. D., as well as other relatives and friends.
Mrs. Rose (Trinkelbach) Kollbaum was born Jan. 25, 1890 in Sequin, Tex., and moved to Schleswig with her parents when a young girl.
On Feb. 5, 1908 she was united in marriage to Fred Kollbaum. To this union 14 children were born. A daughter, Viola, who died in infancy and a son Marvin (Dick) who died in 1958 preceded her in death.
The Kollbaums farmed in the Ida Grove community for several years before moving into town. Mrs. Kollbaum died at the Ida Grove hospital on Jan. 31 (1966) following a long lingering illness.

Rosina Maria Johanna (Thiede) Brockman (1885 - 1965)
Funeral services for Mrs Rosina M. Brockman were held Saturday morning at the Immanuel Lutheran church in Schleswig with Rev. F. A. Wiese officiating. Mrs Ray Schmidt, organist, accompanied the choir who sang "I'm But A Stranger Here, Heaven Is My Home" and the congregation sang "Just As I Am."Rosina Maria Johanna, daughter of August and Maria Thiede, was born September 30, 1885 in Sac County. She was baptized November 15, 1885 by Rev. Mueller at St. John's Lutheran Church, Stockholm Township.
On June 24th, 1914, she was united in marriage to Henry Brockman at St. John's, Stockholm Township. For three years the couple farmed in Ida County and near Boyer in Crawford County. Then they moved to Schleswig where Rosina has lived the past 48 years.
Mrs Brockman has been in failing health the past two years. She died Wednesday morning, November 17th (1965) at her home in Schleswig.
She is survived by her only child, a daughter Garnet, wife of Leroy Friedrichsen and a grand daughter Eileen, wife of Marvin Streck. Two sisters: Henrietta Baker of Schleswig and Frances Thiede of Clinton, Iowa. One brother: Gustav Stehr of Boyer.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry who died December 17, 1955. She attained to 80 years, one month and 17 days. Pallbearers were Henry Stehr, Palmer Moeller, Jurgen Petersen, Herman Wellendorf, Louis Thiede and Clement Thiede.
Interment was in Morgan Cemetery. Sinn's Funeral home was in charge of arrangements.

Roy J. Friedrichsen (1916 - 1979)
Roy J. Friedrichsen was born Aug. 21, 1916 near Schleswig, Iowa, the son of John and Frieda Neumann Friedrichsen. He died April 16, 1979 at Clarkson Hospital, Omaha, Nebr. at the age of 62.Roy was raised on a family farm near Schleswig. He received his formal education in the rural schools near his home. He was baptized and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith.
Roy was later united in marriage. To this union were born, two sons and a daughter. On Oct. 10, 1965 Roy was united in marriage to Jennie Colburn in Minnesota. They made their home in Denison where Roy was employed in the lumber and feed businesses. He retired several years ago due to health and has since continued to make his home in Denison.
He was preceded in death by his father. Survivors include, his wife Jennie of Denison, two sons, Dale of Deloit and Dennis of Denver, Colo., one daughter Faye, Mrs. Dale Kinney, his mother, Mrs. Frieda Friedrichsen and six grandchildren. Also by two step-daughters, Mrs. Barb Carlson of Manly and Mrs. Joyce Whitehurst of Denver, Colo.
Funeral services were held April 19, at 2:00 p.m. at the Huebner Funeral Home, Denison. Burial was in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens. The Rev. Jack Heck of Zion Lutheran Church officiated at the services. Pallbearers included Don Kuehnhold, Harold Gronau, Howard Qualheim, Albert Gronau, Ben Miller and Terry Kuehnhold. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Rudolph Ewoldt (1892 - 1978)
Rudolph, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ewoldt, was born Jan. 9, 1892, near Manilla, Iowa. He attended the rural schools near his home.He was united in marriage with Freda Bargenquast, Feb. 20, 1918. They farmed near Manilla until moving into town in 1937 where they operated the Ewoldt Cafe from 1944 to 1966. Following their retirement, they continued to live in Manilla and because of failing health moved to the Manilla Manor about one and a half years ago. Freda passed away on Jan. 9, 1978.
Rudy continued to make his home in the Manilla Manor where he passed away on Thursday, Dec. 28, 1978, at the age of 86 years, 11 months, and 19 days.
Beside his wife, he was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters. He is survived by his daughter, Ruby, Mrs. Vincent Kloewer of Manilla, 10 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren, by one brother, Hugo Ewoldt of Manilla and one sister, Mrs. Olga Schrum of Clark, S.D.
Funeral Services were held Saturday, Dec. 30, at 2:00 p.m. in the Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla. Officiating was Pastor Victor Hoyer. Interment was at the Nishnabotna Cemetery in Manilla. Honorary pallbearers were Merle Reinhardt, Ronald Franks, Phillip Gibbons and David Disburg. Pallbearers were James Kloewer, Edward Kloewer, Leo Kloewer, William Kloewer, Michael Kloewer and Dennis Ramsey. The Ohde Funeral Home in Manilla was in charge of the arrangements.

Rudolph G. Petersen (1913 - 1988)
Rudolph G. Petersen, the son of Jurgen and Minnie Hansen Petersen, was born in Paradise Township, Crawford County, Iowa, Jan. 21, 1913 and died Aug. 13, 1988 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, at the age of 75.Rudolph was educated in rural schools in Paradise Township and lived on the family farm with his parents where he helped with the farming.
On March 20, 1935, Rudolph and Lorena Fredericks of Hanover Township were united in marriage by Rev. William Freese in the parsonage at Denison and their lives together were blessed with one son and two daughters.
As a young couple and also as a family, they shared their lives on the family farm until 1964 when Rudolph retired from farming. He and Lorena moved to Dow City, where Rudolph worked for the Farmers Elevator and later, Nelsons Park and did carpenter work with his brothers-in-law. He retired in 1983 but he and Lorena remained in Dow City. He had a fondness for the out of doors and enjoyed fishing.
He was a 50 year member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Dow City and served on the church council for many years. He taught Sunday school there and served as their Sunday School superintendant.
Rudolph was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister and is survived by his wife, Lorena; one son, Glen and his wife Norma of Denison; two daughters, Gloria Federsen and her husband John of Dow City; Eunice Hollander and her husband Duane of Denison; ten grandchildren, four great grandchildren, his step father, Henry Maack of the Dunlap Care Center and one sister, Emma Garrett of Dow City.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, August 15, 1988 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Dow City. Pastor Kenneth Haydon officiated the service and the graveside rites at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Mrs. Darold Kahl served as organist for congregational singing of "Just As I Am" and "What A Friend We Have In Jesus." Those serving as pallbearers were Richard Fredericks, Raymond Fredericks Jr., Don E. Petersen, Gene Petersen, Beryl Garrett and Lyle Petersen.

Rudolph Herman Jensen (1887 - 1963)
Rudolph Herman Jensen, son of Peter and Fredericka Bruhn Jensen, was born Sept. 2, 1887 in Crawford County, Ia., and died at Mercy hospital, Clinton on Feb. 24, 1963.He was married to Caroline Johannsen, Jan. 7, 1914. After their marriage they farmed in Goodrich Township. Mrs. Jensen died in 1948. He lived in Crawford county until three years ago, when he went to live with his daughter Mrs. Lorraine Lueders near Clinton.
Surviving are two daughters Mrs. Lueders and Darlene, Mrs. William Richardson, of Richland, Wash., a son, Lon of Iowa City; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister Mrs. Malcolm Heiden of Denison; also many nieces and nephews.
Besides his wife and parents he was preceded in death by one son, Lester; one sister and three brothers.
Prayer services were held at the Pape Funeral home in Clinton, Monday afternoon, with Pastor M. E. Lesher officiating. Funeral services were held at the Huebner Funeral home on Feb. 27 at 2 p. m. Rev. William Peterson officiated. Pallbearers were Harry Petersen, Melvin Petersen, Kenneth Thams, John Gosch, Arlo Schmidt and Virgil Schmidt. Interment was made in Morgan Township cemetery.

Rudolph Peter Ferdinand Schramm (1891 - 1972)
Rudolph Peter Ferdinand Schramm, son of Henry and Matilda (Wulf) Schramm, was born March 6, 1891, in Crawford County, Iowa, was taken to the Crawford County Memorial Hospital on Friday and died on Saturday, June 24, 1972, at the age of 81 years 3 months and 18 days.Mr. Schramm was born on a farm and attended rural schools. Baptized and attended rural schools, baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and a Lutheran church.
On April 28, 1915, he was married to Emma Marie Moeller, of Denison, a union to which five children were born. They resided on a farm until moving to Denison in 1943. Then he was a mail messenger a number of years. Mrs. Schramm preceded him in death January 18, 1971.
Surviving are five children, Elizabeth, Mrs. Ray Lownes of Denison; Walter of Denison; Wilbert of Winter Haven, Florida; Ruth, Mrs. Willard Thompson, of Denison; and Sandra, Mrs. Curtis Stender of Denison; 18 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren; two brothers, Hugo of Denison and Robert of Chicago, Illinois; and two sisters, Mrs. Rosa Paulsen, of Denison and Mrs. Emma Daniels of Omaha, Nebraska.
Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife Emma, and two brothers, Edward and John.
His funeral service was held at the Zion Lutheran Church on Tuesday, June 27, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Carl W. Schmidt officiating at the service. Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist and accompanied Henry Henningsen as soloist. Interment was made in the Oakland Cemetery with the following serving as pall bearers: William Andresen, Alvin Dixon, Harold Eggert, Clarence Hopp, Neal Moeller, and Darrell Moeller. Huebner Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Rudolph Walter Christensen (1889 - 1965)
Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon, September 16 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church for R. W. Christensen, who died Tuesday. The choir sang, "Be Still My Soul" and the congregation sang "Nearer My God To Thee." Mrs Everett Gronau was organist. Rev. F. A. Wiese read the following obituary:Rudolph Walter Christensen, son of Hans Christensen and Johanna nee Petersen was born February 17, 1889 at Denison, Iowa. On August 4, 1915 he was united in marriage with Caroline Hollander. The couple made their home in Schleswig. For a number of years, Mr Christensen was in the painting and paper hanging business. Later on, he established a General Electric Appliance Store and also did house wiring. He later sold the store and retired. His illness was of short duration and he passed away early Tuesday morning, September 14 (1965) at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital.
He is survived by his wife Caroline of Schleswig; two daughters Alice of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Hilda, Mrs Richard Franks of Denison. One sister: Martha, wife of Charles Bristol of Long Beach and his son-in-law Richard Franks of Denison. He was preceded in death by two children that died in infancy, one brother William and one sister Hulda.
He was a long time member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. He attained to the age of 76 years, 8 months and 28 days. Pallbearers were L. D. Johns, L. T. Nahnsen, J. D. Schlimgen, Virgil Frank, Arlo Schultz and Lyle Schultz. Interment was in Morgan cemetery.

Ruth Eleanor (Gruber) Dodge (1911 - 1969)
Funeral services for Mrs. Donald Dodge were held August 9, 1969 at 10:30 a.m. at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Rev. R. J. Ratzlaff pastor of the United Church of Christ at Schleswig, officiated. Burial was in the Morgan Township Cemetery, Schleswig.Mrs. Dodge was killed in a two-car collision on August 6, 1969, south of Schleswig.
Mrs. Dodge was an assistant professor of mathematics at Midwestern College at Denison for the last three years. She previously taught mathematics at Schleswig for 10 years. Mrs. Dodge had received B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Minnesota, and she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
The former Ruth Eleanor Gruber, she was born Dec. 5, 1911, at Ann Lake, Minnesota.
On September 24, 1938 she married Donald Dodge in the Episcopal Cathedral in Minneapolis. To their marriage were born three children. Twenty years ago they moved to Schleswig having previously lived at Ida Grove and Sioux City.
Mrs. Dodge was a member of the Ida Grove (Iowa) Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star.
Survivors include the widower; a son, John Dodge of Ellsworth Wis.; two daughters, Mrs. Kenneth (Ruth) Lame of Minneapolis, Minn., and Mrs. Larry (Ann) Winans of Denison; her mother, Mrs. Gladys Nichols of Denver, Colo.; three brothers, Ralph, Paul and Clifford Gruber, all of Minneapolis; six sisters, Mrs. Verdi (Geneva) Burke of Minneapolis; Mrs. Norman (Vera) Haffey, Mrs. Vernon (Hope) Chitwood, and Mrs. Goodwin (Ruby) Burke, all of Denver; Miss Eva Gruber of Hutchinson, Kan., and Mrs. Constance (Faith) Driwianka of Red Wing, Minn., and four grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Byron Behrmann, Eldov Christensen, James Dodd, Kenneth Burnett, Dr. William Culmer, Wayne Streck.

Adelheid (Pautsch) Bielfeldt (1895 - 1987)
Adelheid Bielfeldt was born on October 8, 1895, on a farm in Hanover Township, the daughter of Emil and Anna Lill Pautsch. She died on Monday, March 30, 1987, at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa, at the age of 91 years, 5 months, and 22 days.Adelheid spent her early years on the family farm in Hanover Township. She was baptized on October 27, 1895, by Pastor Carl Runge at St. Paul's Lutheran Church and later was confirmed on April 4, 1909, at St. Paul's by Pastor Carl Runge. She attended St. Paul's Lutheran School in Hanover and graduated from the eighth grade.
On August 18, 1918, Adelheid was united in marriage to John Frederick Bielfeldt at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hanover Township. Together they made their home on a farm in Hanover. In 1952, John and Adelheid moved to Denison and made their home on an acreage west of Denison.
In June of 1962, John passed away. In August of 1973, Adelheid entered Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison. Adelheid was a long time member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and a member of the Dorcas Society.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Adelheid was preceded in death by one son, Bernhardt, who died in infancy; four brothers and one sister.
Survivors include her children, Emil Bielfeldt and his wife, Vernette of Charter Oak, John Bielfeldt and his wife, Dorothy of Arion, Ruth and her husband, Hans Jess of Schleswig, Ruby and her husband, Leroy Sass of Hampton, Fern and her husband, Clarence Held of Hinton, and Glen Bielfeldt and his wife, Phyllis of Perry; 19 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are one brother, Ferdinand Pautsch of Denison and two sisters, Elna Engelking of Battle Creek and Anna, Mrs. Melyin Bohlander of Sioux City.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, April 2, 1987, at 11:00 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Burial was in the Morgan Township Cemetery in Schleswig. The Rev. Donald Fraker and Rev. Kurt Kaiser officiated at the services. Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist. Serving as pallbearers were Jon Bielfeldt, James Bielfeldt, Bruce Held, Dennis L. Reimer, Richard Sass and Robert Henningsen.

Anna M. (Boysen) Reincke (1902 - 1981)
Anna M. Reincke was born on March 9, 1902, in Otter Creek Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the daughter of Nick and Helena Kuhl Boysen. She died April 19, 1981, at St. Joseph Hospital, Sioux City, at the age of 79.Anna was baptized on Sept. 14, 1902 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. She was later confirmed in the Lutheran faith on Dec. 24, 1922, at Trinity Lutheran Church at Grant Township. Anna spent her early years on a family farm. She received her formal education in the rural school near her home.
On July 26, 1922 she was united in marriage to Edward Reincke at Denison. They made their home on a farm near Schleswig. Later they farmed in the Ricketts community before farming near Charter Oak.
In addition to her parents, Anna was preceded in death by one son Vernon in 1965, one grandson, two sisters and three brothers.
Survivors include her husband, Edward of Charter Oak, two sons, Leonard of Omaha, Neb., and Roy of Longview, Tex., and one daughter, Mrs. Marcella Olson of Ute. Also by 12 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, two brothers, Eldore Boysen of Sioux City and Gilbert Boysen of Denison and two sisters, Mrs, Hedwig Naeve of Charter Oak and Mrs. Helen Kisling of Sioux City.
Funeral services were held April 22, at 2 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, Charter Oak. Burial was in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery near Charter Oak. The Rev. L.C. Gebhardt officiated at the services. Pallbearers included Laverne Strait, Ervin Kuhlmann, Andy Andresen, William Luth, Alfred Hageman, Harwin Jess. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Anna (Nemitz) Schultz (1883 - 1961)
Anna Schultz, the daughter of Ernest Nemitz and Wilhelmine Knuth Nemitz, was born Nov. 21, 1883 in Crawford County. She attended Hanover Township Lutheran school and was baptized in the Lutheran faith. She was confirmed on April 11, 1897 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hanover Township.On June 5, 1904 she was united in marriage to Carl J. Schultz at St. Paul's Lutheran church. To this union seven children were born and one daughter, Minnie, was adopted.
She died March 19, 1961 at the age of 77 years, 3 months and 28 days.
Survivors include her husband, Carl, seven children. Paul Schultz of Denison, Ben Schultz of Battle Creek, William Schultz of Charter Oak, Viola, Mrs., Martin Dorale of Ute, Erna, Mrs. Irvin Kastner of Kiron, Edgar Schultz of Schleswig and Minnie, Mrs. George Huebner of Yakima, Wash.. 32 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and one brother, Dan Nemitz, of Charter Oak.
Funeral services were held at St. John's Lutheran church March 23 at 2 p.m. Rev. O. R. Schlegelmilch officiated. Pallbearers were Kenneth Schultz, Norman Schultz, Arlo Schultz, Roger Petersen, Loren Kastner and Burdell Dorale. Interment was made in Hanover cemetery at Charter Oak.

Anna Caroline Wilhelmine (Krueger) Judy (1879 - 1967)
Mrs. Anna Judy died at the Claudia Rest home on Monday night, Feb. 6 (1967). She had been in poor health in recent years and had been a resident of the Claudia home over three years.Anna Caroline Wilhelmine Krueger was born April 16, 1879 in Germany. In 1882 she came with her parents to Crawford county, making their home in Stockholm township.
She was married to John Judy on Dec. 15, 1901 and to this union three children were born. They farmed in Stockholm and Goodrich townships until coming to make their home in Denison in 1944. The past three years were spent at Eventide where Mr. Judy died in January of 1965.
Baptized in infancy she affiliated with the Lutheran church by the rite of confirmation in St. John Lutheran church of Stockholm township. Since 1944 she was a member of Zion Lutheran church in Denison.
Her funeral service was held on Feb. 9 with Rev. Carl W. Schmidt officiating. Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist and hymns were sung by the Lutheran Ladies Choir. Interment was made in the Oakland cemetery with the following acting as pallbearers, Kenneth Aldag, Ervin Keesling, Edward Peters, Earl Keesling, Wayne Keesling and David Rameden.
Her death is survived by one daughter, , Mrs. Edna Keesling of Dension and one son, Eston Judy of Sioux City, six grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, a sister, Alma Krueger and a brother. John Krueger, both of Deloit.
Preceeding her in death were her husband, one son, Lester, one granddaughter, one great-granddaughter and a brother and sister.

Annie Sophia (Maack) Dorale (1846 - 1965)
Annie Sophia Dorale, the; daughter of Ernest Maack and: Mary Sachau Dorale, was born near Moline, Ill., on Feb. 28, 1876 and was also baptized there. Later she came to Hanover township with her parents and was confirmed in Hanover township on April 11, 1897 by Pastor Carl Runge.On 29, 1895 she was married to Henry Dorale. At that time the couple made its home in Hanover township on a farm. In 1900 they moved to Soldier township. For a short while they lived at Mapleton. In 1946 they retired from the farm and moved to Charter Oak.
During these years they became the parents of eight children: Elsa, Emma, Paul, Fred, Lula, Albert, Richard and Esther. Of these Paul died in infancy. The husband and father passed away in 1961. Emma and Elsa also have died.
Mrs. Dorale was hospitalized in 1960. Since that time she spent most of her time in a rest home in Denison. She passed away quietly on Thursday morning having reached, the age of 88 years, 11 months and 20 days. She outlived her four brothers: Henry, John, August and Chris, as well as her two sisters, Emma and Tillie.
Among the survivors are the following: Her five children, Fred Dorale of Milbank. S. D. Lula (Mrs. Irvin Bartels) of Ricketts. Albert Dorale of Mapleton, Richard Dorale of Ute, Esther (Mrs. Raymond Henningsen) of Ida Grove; and sister, Mary (Mrs. Herman Klinker) of Denison; 17 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held in St. John's Lutheran church in Charter Oak, with Pastor O. R. Schlegelmilch in charge. Pallbearers were Glen Bartels, Kenneth Dorale, Milfred Dorale, Richard Dorale, Gene Henningsen and Alvin Schwarz. Interment was in the Immanuel Lutheran cemetery in Soldier township.

Arthur Sahl (1884 - ?)
Note: No newspaper date or date of death in articleArthur Sahl, lifelong resident of Crawford County, died at the Memorial hospital on June 30. He had been admitted as a patient June 20.
Arthur Sahl, son of Christian Sahl and Caroline Bosche Sahl, was born Aug. 13, 1884, in Denison township.
On Feb. 12, 1912 he was married to Margaret Louise Lange and after their marriage they resided in Goodrich township until retiring to Denison in 1946.
He was a member of the Lutheran church having been baptized in infancy and later confirmed in Zion Lutheran church of Denison.
His funeral service was held al the Huebner Funeral home on July 2 with the Rev. Carl Schmidt officiating, interment was made in the Morgan township cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers: William L. Gehring. James Kragel, Lorenz Petersen, J. Henry Schroeder, Ervin Voss and Marvin Voss.
He is survived by his widow, by one son. Leslie, of Manilla, by two daughters, Mrs. Lilliam Haase of Denison and Mrs. Mildred Ronner or Eilmington, N. C., and by nine grandchildren.

August Steinkuehler (1891 - 1967)
August Steinkuehler died at the Denison hospital on Aug. 31 (1967). He had been patient there since Aug. 28.August Herman Steinkuehler was born July 12, 1891 in Nishnabotna Twnship, Crawford county, the son of Herman Steinkuehler and Anna (Loe?e) Steinkuehler. He was baptized in fancy and later affiliated with the Lutheran church by confirmation.
He was married to Martha Mundt on March 1, 1916 and to this union two children were born. They farmed the Manilla community until coming make their home in Denison in September of 1962.
Funeral services were held in the Zion Lutheran church in Denison on Sept. 4 with Rev. C. W. Schmidt officiating. Hymns were sung by the Lutheran Ladies Choir with Mrs. Carl Schmidt serving as organist. Interment was made in the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens. Pallbearers were Russell Boeck, El?on Brodersen, E. K. McCoid, Glen Comstock, Lyle Gruhn and Patrick Houston.
Survivors include his widow, one son, Wayne and one daughter, Mrs. Sandra Namanny of Denison, six grandchildren, two brothers, Fred, of Lake View and Henry of Omaha, two sisters, Mrs. Lora Lenz and Mrs. Al?a Steckelberg, both of San Diego. One brother, William, and two sisters, Edna and Minnie, preceded him in death.

Survivors: Widow; daughter, Mrs. Doreen Graham of Battle Creek; son, Arthur of Des Moines; step-sister, Mrs. Henry Rehse of Ida Grove; and three grandchildren.

August Ludwig Bohlmann (1882 - 1970)
August Ludwig Bohlmann, son of Michael and Welhelmine Bohlmann was born April 27, 1882 in Crawford County, Iowa near Hanover and died Saturday February 1, 1970 at the Maple Heights Nursing Home, having reached the age of 87 years, nine months and ten days.He grew up in the Hanover township area three miles east of Ricketts. He farmed his entire life in the Ricketts and Charter Oak area. For about the last year and a half he and his wife had been making their home at the Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton.
August was a member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Hanover Township. For the last 62 years he was member of the Immanual Lutheran Church at Soldier Township.
On March 5, 1908, he married Lydia Fester at Soldier Township.
Survivors include his wife, Lydia, one daughter, Mrs. Adolph (Irma) Maas of Charter Oak, Iowa; two sons, Carl of Charter Oak and Elmer of Schleswig, five grandchildren; two brothers, Otto of Charter Oak and Herman of Schleswig; three sisters; Mrs. Tillie Schoen of Ames, Iowa, Mrs. Rose Schwarz, Ricketts, Iowa, and, Mrs. Ben Carstensen of Ricketts .
He was preceded in death by his parents, two daughters, two sons, four sisters, and three grandchildren.
Services were held Tuesday, February 10, 1970 at 2:00 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Soldier Township with Rev. E. E. Greene officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Martin Wodtke, Herbert Bohlmann, Emil Peterson, Martin Hagemann, Marcus Wodtke and Gerhardt Meyer.

Ben Fretz (1881 - 1964)
Ben Fretz was born in Luxemburg; Germany on May 21, 1881; the son of Jacob and Katie Fretz and he died on July 5, 1964 at 83 years of age. He came to the United States in 1902 at the age of 21.In 1908 he was united in marriage to Rose Blum; and to this union seven children were born. He spent many years as an employee of Crawford County.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Rose, his parents, one son, Henry, who died in infancy and one granddaughter.
Survivors are five daughters and one son, Mrs. Angie Boslaugh, Mrs. Earl Hanrahan, Mrs. John Pelley, Leonard Fretz, Mrs. Lowell Campbell and Mrs. Dean Fouts, 20 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held July 8 at 9 a. m. in St. Rose of Lima Catholic church with Father Jerome Koenig officiating. Burial was in St. Rose of Lima cemetery. Pallbearers were Leo Hanrahan, Floyd Fretz. Gailen Christensen, Lawrence Pelley, Wesley Riley and Marvel Woebke. Huebner Funeral home was in charge of services.

Bernhard Fredrich Krueger (1888 - 1967)
Bernhard Fredrich Krueger, the son of Carl and Marie Krueger was born on January 14, 1888 in Crawford County near Charter Oak. He died May 5, 1967 at the age of 79 years, 3 months, and 21 days.He moved to South Dakota in about 1909 where he married Amelia Eichsteadt on February 25, 1909. They lived in South Dakota until 1914 when they moved back to Iowa settling in the Mapleton and Ute vicinity for one year. In 1915 they moved to the farm near Ricketts where he remained for the rest of his life. He died at Sioux City after a long illness. His wife preceded him in death in 1942.
After His retirement from farming he took up the trade of cabinet making. He was baptized into the Christian faith as an infant and confirmed into the Lutheran church as a youth in Soldier Township. He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran church of Soldier Township at the time of his death.
Survivors are his daughter, Mrs. William (Helma) Ladwig of Denison; 6 sons, Martin of Dow City, Adolph of Denison, Edward of Danbury, Arthur of Charter Oak, Lester of Dow City, and Loren of Dow City; one brother, Ernest of Mapleton; and 23 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, 4 brothers, and 1 sister.
Services were held May 8, 1967 in the Immanuel Lutheran church, Soldier Township, with Pastor E. E. Greene officiating. Pallbearers were Robert Krueger, DeWayne Krueger, Darrell Krueger, Larry Ladwig, Richard Krueger, and Edward Krueger, Jr. Burial was in the Soldier township Cemetery under the direction of the Walter Funeral Home.
