Erma H. (Salomon) Greinke (1902 - 1984)

Erma H. Greinke was born on June 27, 1902 at Denison, Iowa the daughter of Claus and Caroline Schnoor Salomon. She died July 28, 1984 at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, at the age of 82.

Erma was raised in the Denison community. She received her early education at the Zion Lutheran School. After graduating from the Denison High School she attended Iowa State University and Rockford College in Rockford, Ill. where she received her under graduate degree.

On June 8, 1929, Erma was united in marriage to Fred Greinke at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Together they made their home in Denison all of their married life. Erma was a life long member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison where she was baptized and confirmed.

In addition to her parents, Erma was preceded in death by one sister, Marie and one brother in infancy.

Survivors include her husband Fred of Denison, one son David and his wife Betty of Bradenton, Flor., and by one daughter, Carolyn, Mrs. Ernest Stenberg of Kailua, Hawaii. Also surviving are four grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held July 31, at 10:30 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Burial was in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens. The Rev. Donald Fraker of Zion Lutheran Church officiated at the services. Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist with the congregation singing hymns, "Abide With Me" and "For all the Saints". Pallbearers were Clarence Denker, Gilbert Moeller, Walter Denker, Curt Hugg, Robert Logan and Ennis Bergstadt. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Erma Leona (Henningsen) Wellendorf (1907 - 2001)

Erma Leona Wellendorf was born April 8, 1907, the daughter of William and Bertha Schroeder Henningsen. She died Saturday, April 21, 2001 at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa at the age of ninety-four.

Erma was born in Schleswig, Iowa and was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith. She received her education at the Schleswig Community School and graduated from the Schleswig High School. After completing her education she helped on the family farm.

On January 6, 1932, Erma was united in marriage to Mangnus Wellendorf at the Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Church in Schleswig. The couple made their home on a farm south of Vail until 1992, when they moved to the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison.

Erma was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. She enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, cooking and baking for her family. Emma also enjoyed fishing with her husband on lakes and ponds in the area. In her leisure time, Erma loved cross stitching and tatting.

Erma was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter Ruth in 1989, her husband, Mangnus in 1992; and one brother, Raymond Henningsen and his wife, Esther.

Survivors include one son, Leonard Walde and his wife, Shirley of Westside; nieces, nephews; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, April 24, 2001 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. David Sewing officiating the service with burial at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig, Iowa. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "Lift High the Cross", "How Great Thou Art" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus". Those serving as pallbearers were: Mario Henningsen. Glen Wellendorf, Joe Schierbrock, Roger Meehan, Gerald Beck and Dick Hugg. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Erna B. (Kutschinski) Friedrichs (1901 - 1998)

Erna B. Friedrichs was born November 10, 1901, the daughter of Carl and Louise Jahn Kutschinski. She died on Wednesday, May 27, 1998 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa at the age of ninety-six.

Erna was born near Charter Oak, Iowa and was baptized in Christ on December 6, 1901 at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hanover Township, Charter Oak and confirmed on March 28, 1915 at the St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak. She received her education in a rural school and later, the Fiene Sister's Sewing Class. Erna became a fine seamstress and sewed clothing for her family and did sewing, alternations, mending and quilting for many in the community.

On December 6,1922, Erna was united in marriage to William Friedrichs and spent the first ten years of their married life on various farms in South Dakota. In 1932, the couple moved to Iowa, where they made their home on a farm in Crawford County, until moving to Charter Oak 1969.

Erna was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, their Ladies Aid, serving as past president, vice president and Christian Growth Chairman. She was also past vice president of the Denison Zone LWML and past president of the Golden Oak in Charter Oak. Erna was honored by St. John's Education Department for twenty-six years of caring for the Nursery Roll Program. She was in charge of the Stamps for Missions Program and was affectionately known as the "stamp lady". She was also very active in making quilts for World Relief.

Erna was very devoted to her Lord and Savior and in her later years spent much of her time in devotion and prayers. She loved to bake bread, coffee cake and cookies for her family and guests. Erna also loved to do tatting work and quilting. She enjoyed gardening, canning, preserving and always had a sewing project close at hand, never idle.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1982, one brother, Art Kutschinski and one sister, Olinda Schultz.

Survivors include, one son,. Don Friedrichs and his wife, Nadine of Charter Oak; three daughters. Lavaughn Schultz and her husband, Irvin of Kiron; Dolores Suhr and her husband, Raymond of Luverne, Minnesota; Rita Lafrentz and her husband, Delbert of Mapleton; eleven grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren; two brothers, Alvin Kutschinski and his wife, Dorothy; Elmer Kutschinski; and one sister, Irene Lee and her husband, Francis, all of Charter Oak; many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, May 30,1998 at the St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. L.C. Gebhardt and Vicar Kent Pierce officiated the service and grave side rites held at the St. John Lutheran Cemetery, Charter Oak. Art Beeck provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "Let Us Ever Walk with Jesus", "Abide with Me" and "The Lord's My Shepherd, I'll Not Want". Those serving as pallbearers were: Norman Christensen, Allen Nepper, Kyle Schultz, Kreg Schultz, Earl Schultz and Bruce Lee. The Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak was in charge of arrangements.

Erna (Popken) Ruberg (1900 - 1984)

Erna Ruberg was born on a farm in Goodrich Township, Crawford County, Iowa, Aug. 12, 1900, the daughter of Herman and Ernestine Lutz Popken.

She was baptized when she was an infant at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and was later confirmed into the Lutheran Faith at the same church. Erna was raised on the family farm and received her formal education at the local rural school near their home. After her schooling she was employed in Denison until her marriage.

On Feb. 23, 1921, Erna was married to John Ruberg at Denison. To this union four children were born; Ray, Betty, Jean and Dorothy. They made their home on a farm south of Denison until 1944 when they moved to Denison. John died Nov. 1, 1977, and Erna continued to make Denison her home.

Erna suffered a heart attack at her home, Sept. 28, 1984, and was hospitalized at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison. She died at the hospital Oct. 5, 1984 At the time of her death she had attained the age of 84 years, 1 month, and 23 days.

She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and the Ladies Aid of the Church. In later years one of Erna's fondest interests was meeting her friends and actively participating in events at the Crawford County Senior Center in Denison.

Erna was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Ernestine Popken, her husband, John Ruberg, two brothers, Arthur and Louis Popken, one sister, Emma Haase, and one infant granddaughter, Carol Ruberg.

She is survived by four children, Ray and his wife Arlene Ruberg of Moville, Betty and her husband, Joe Griffin of Denison, Jean and her husband Marvin Jensen of Audubon, and Dorothy and her husband, Keith Jensen of Irwin; 14 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, two sisters, Elsie Thomsen and Anna Rath, both of Denison, and one sister-in-law, Adela Popken of Rosewell, N.M. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Oct. 8, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison with the Rev. Jack D. Heck officiating. Music for the service was provided by Judy, Mrs. Robert Griffin, singing "How Great Thou Art", Melinda, Mrs. Mitch Jensen, singing "What A Friend We Have In Jesus", and the congregation singing "I'm But A Stranger Here". Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist. Pallbearers were grandsons of Erna and included Ron Ruberg, Bob Griffin, Mark Jensen, Ken Ruberg, Mitchell Jensen, and Jim Jensen. Interment was in the Oakland Cemetery in Denison. The Pfannebecker-Maxwell Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Ernest Stegemann (1908 - 1994)

ANTHON, Iowa - Ernest A. Stegemann, 86, of Anthon died Saturday, Sept. 10, 1994, at Indian Hills Care Center in Sioux City.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Anthon with the Rev. Michael Harman officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Anthon. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the Walter-Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon.

Mr. Stegemann was born June 29, 1908, in Washington Township, Buck Grove, the son of Albert and Minnie (Pepper) Stegemann.

He married Mary Lucille Wingrove June 29, 1939, in Cherokee. The couple lived in the Buck Grove area where he did day work and was a mechanic. They later moved to Danbury, where he worked for Lloyd Creswell and Reimer Implement. In 1953, they moved to Anthon and later to Kingsley where he worked for Anderson Implement. They then moved to Le Mars, where he worked for Pews International. In 1975 he retired and they returned to Anthon. Mrs. Stegemann died Nov. 4, 1990.

Mr. Stegemann was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. A musician, he played the guitar, accordion and harmonica with bands at house warmings and barn dances.

Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Mary and Chris Ketelsen of Anthon and Ernene and Duane Pokett of South Sioux City; a son, Clifford of Anthon; two brothers, Ben of Carroll and Robert and his wife, Jennie of Des Moines; two sisters, Freda Savors of Tampa, Fla., and Helma and her husband, Don Grahan of Mitchellville; a sister-in-law, Elsie Wingrove of Denison; 16 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Ernst C. Huebner (1909 - 1998)

Ernst C. (Johann) Huebner, 88, passed away Saturday, September 12, 1998 at Riverview Manor in Selah. Ernie was born September 26, 1909 in Crawford County, Iowa to Otto and Willamena (Nemitz) Huebner.

Ernie grew up with, and eventually married, his wife of fifty-seven years, Laura Fredericks, in Crawford County, Iowa. They moved to the Yakima area, with their family, in 1951 and made it their home for forty-seven years. He worked for Yakima Cement for several years before retiring. He was a member of the Teamsters Union. They were longtime members of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Yakima.

He was a devoted family man with an undying passion for his wife. He was a dedicated caregiver to Laura, tending to her every need and refusing to place her in a nursing home.

He was also an avid Seattle Mariner fan, never missing a game on TV or radio. Ernst enjoyed gardening and kept a wonderful looking garden. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. He was known to almost everyone as Ernie, and to his sons and grandsons as "Big Ern".

Ernst is preceded in death by his parents; his wife Laura Huebner; one son, Erlin E. Huebner; one granddaughter, Cara Adams; one brother, George Huebner and two sisters, Bertha Timm and Louise Ebert. He is survived by three sons, Richard, Gene and Myron Huebner, all of Yakima; one daughter, Sharon Owen of St. Paul, Minnesota; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A committal service was held Thursday, September 17th at 1:00 p.m. at Terrace Heights Memorial Park and followed at 2:00 p.m. by the funeral service at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 801 Tieton Drive, in Yakima. Arrangements were made under the direction of Shaw and Sons Funeral Directors.

Ernest F. Lehmann (1904 - 1984)

Ernest F. Lehmann, 80, of Mapleton died March 17, 1984, at his home in Mapleton of an apparent heart attack.

Mr. Lehmann was born Feb. 17, 1904, in Crawford County, near Denison, the son of Ernest and Emelie Burmeister Lehmann.

He married Emma Grell March 7, 1928, in Denison. They farmed in the Denison, Schleswig, Deloit and Danbury communities until 1969 when they retired and moved into Mapleton. He was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Dorothy Lehmann of Mapleton and Mrs. Wilbert (Donna) Groth of Denison; one son, Dale of St. Louis, Mo; two sisters, Mrs. Elfrieda Behm of Cape Coral, Fla., and Mrs. Helen Woebke of Dension: eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m. March 20 in St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton. The Rev. Philip Ritter officiated. Burial was in Crawford Heights Cemetery in Denison. Organist was Hazel Burning, with the congregation singing "Nearer My God to Thee" and "Heaven Is My Home." Pallbearers were Walter Woebke, Marvin Woebke, David Johnson, Arnold Grell Jr., Tom Grell and Leon Johnson.

Ernestine (Sieckmann) Schmidt (1908 - 1993)

Ernestine Schmidt was born October 23, 1908, the daughter of J. Henry and Bertha nee Riesner Sieckmann. She died on Wednesday, may 12,1993 at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison at the age of eighty-four years.

Ernestine was born in St. Louis, Missouri where she was baptized in Christ and later confirmed at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in St. Louis.

On July 31, 1929, Ernestine was united in marriage to Rev. Carl W. Schmidt and were blessed with the birth of two daughters. For two and one half years, they lived in Kinsley, Kansas where she served as an organist for Peace Lutheran Church. In 1932, they moved to Grant Township, Iowa where her husband became pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church. In August of 1937, they settled in Denison to serve in the Zion congregation.

Ernestine was active in every aspect of her husband's congregation, serving as a member of Ladies Aid, Dorcas Society, Evening Guild, Wedding Ring Club, choir and served the church for several years as an organist. For more than thirty years, Ernestine served the Sunday School as an organist and taught the Senior High Bible class. She was an active worker for the founding of the Eventide Lutheran Nursing Home and served as the first president of the Eventide Auxiliary in addition to volunteering her efforts at the local hospital. Throughout her life, she remained devoted to her Lord and her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carl; and one granddaughter, Rebecca Petersen.

Survivors include two daughters, Irene (Mrs. Dale) Kruthoff of Arion and Barbara (Mrs. Earl) Petersen of Lake Park, MN; also eleven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 14, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Pastor Kurt Kaiser and Pastor Philip E. Bloch officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Denison. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Henry Henningsen singing "Nearer, My God to Thee" and con-gregational hymns "Drawn to the Cross" and "The Lord's My Shepherd, I'll Not Want". Pallbearers were: Timothy Petersen, Derrick R. Franck, Dennis Huebner, Mark Kruthoff, Joel E. Maupin, Carol Kruthoff and John Hogan. The Walter A. Huebner and Sons' Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Erwin F. Bendixen (1908 - 1996)

Erwin Fred Bendixen was born June 27, 1908, the son of John and Dora Bielenberg Bendixen. He died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison on Thursday, November 7, 1996 at the age of eighty-eight.

Erwin was born on a farm near Ricketts, Iowa and received his education in the Schleswig Community Schools. After completing his education, he drove a truck for several years, before he began farming.

On April 24, 1929, Erwin was united in marriage to Rose Mohr at the Friedens Evangelical Church in Schleswig, Iowa. The couple settled on a farm near Ricketts, before moving to Rose's family farm. Shortly after moving to Schleswig for a short time and returning to farm north of Schleswig for five years and subsequently returning to Schleswig.

Erwin was a loving and caring husband who enjoyed working and traveling in their motor home. He was a member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig.

He is preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Raynard Bendixen. Survivors include his wife, Rose of Schleswig; one brother, Raymond Bendixen of Odebolt; also many friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 11, 1996, at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Gordon Hoyt officiated the service and graveside rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Dorothy Jessen provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Rubie Kastner singing, "Nearer, My God To Thee" and "Just A Closer Walk With Thee". Pallbearers were Burdell Jensen, Jerry Bendixen, Palmer Moeller, Leslie Grell, James Else and Craig Todd. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of arrangements.

Esther E. (Briggle) Kortmann (1904 - 1991)

Esther E. Kortmann was born on March 1, 1904, the daughter of William and Mary Jones Briggle. She died on Wednesday, Dec. 25, 1991 at the Denison Care Center in Denison at the age of 87 years.

Esther was born in Des Moines. At the age of three, she lived with her foster parents until the age of fifteen when she worked for and lived with William and Mary Kortmann. She was baptized on May 11, 1913 and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith on March 24, 1918.

Esther was united in marriage to Walter Kortmann on Nov. 30, 1921 and the couple settled on the home farm and were blessed with the birth of six children.

She was an independent lady who worked hard and cared for her families needs. She was a devoted member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hanover Township and enjoyed many social events at the church with the various organizations including the Ladies Aid. She also enjoyed helping with activities at the nursing homes in the area as well as sewing and crocheting.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Walter in 1967; one daughter, La Vera Wiegel; one son Walter Kortmann Jr.; four brothers; one sister; and one grandson.

Survivors include four daughters: Alice Alberts of Hooper, Neb., Paula Ruchti and her husband Carl of Ida Grove, Dorothy Lutz of Denison, Wilma Gundy and her friend Gilbert Lasley of Nevada, Mo.; and one daughter-in-law, Elaine Kortmann of Denison. Other survivors include twenty-one grandchildren; thirty-seven great-grandchildren; and fiye great great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 28, 1991 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church Hanover Township in Charter Oak. Rev. Robert Hines officiated the service and grave side rites held at the St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery Hanover Township in Charter Oak. Rachel Greene provided the organ accompaniment for the soloist Penny Ewoldt; who sang "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and "How Great Thou Art" and congregation singing "The Old Rugged Cross." Pallbearers were Joe Ewoldt, Larry Wiegel, Gary Reimer, Paul Briggle, Jeff Kloewer and Robert Alberts. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Walter A. Huebner and Sons' Funeral Home.

Esther J. (Sciford) Ebsen (1901 - 1989)

Esther J. Ebsen, the daughter of Charles and Wilhelmina Brandenberg Sciford, was. born near Charter Oak, Ia., on June 21, 1901 and died on April 17, 1989, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, at the age of 87 years.

Esther grew up near Charter Oak and attended rural schools. She helped in the home after her education.

On Dec. 10, 1919, she and John W. Ebsen of Charter Oak, were united in marriage at the home where she was born. This union was blessed with three children. After marriage they farmed in the Boyer, Herring and Charter Oak areas. They moved to Cedar Rapids in 1943, returning to Schleswig in 1962. They continued to make their home there until John died in August, 1985. In 1986, Esther went to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Leila and Marvin Zage in Schleswig. She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig.

Preceding Esther in death were her parents; her husband, John; one daughter, Wilma Peterson and one granddaughter.

Survivors include her daughter, Leila and husband, Marvin Zage of Schleswig; and her son, John C. Ebsen and his wife, Eva Marie of Cedar Rapids; one son-in-law, Donald Peterson of Savannah, Ga.; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and one sister, Nellie Bohlmann of Schleswig.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 21, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. Pastor Richard Nelson officiated at the services with interment in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. Mrs. Marlene Hight was organist for the church quartet. Selections were "Rock of Ages" and "The Lord Is My Shepherd." The congregational hymn was " Just As I Am, Without One Plea." Serving as pallbearers were Emerson Crampton, Robert Skarin, Emil Petersen, John Meggers and Lloyd Bumsted. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig.

Evan L. Anderson (1903 - 1996)

Evan L. Anderson was born December 6, 1903, the son of John and Augusta Nelson Anderson. He died at the Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa on Wednesday, January 10, 1996 at the age of ninety-two.

Evan was born on a farm near Old Kiron, Iowa and moved with his family at an early age to Ells, not far from Kiron. While still in school, he moved with his family to Vail and completed his education there. After receiving his education he helped his father on the family farm.

On February 14, 1942, Evan was united in marriage to Helen Amman at Rockport, Missouri. The couple made their home on a farm near Vail, and were blessed with the birth of three children.

Evan continued his career in farming and hired out to do thrashing jobs for farmers in the region. He once had as many as twenty-two thrashing jobs at one time.

He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Denison, the Kiwanis Golden Keys and the Farm Bureau. He was a loving husband and father who cared for his family with diligence. He was kind and considerate of others and was always happy and greeted people with a smile. He enjoyed all of the time he spent with his family and loved the many happy events they shared together. Especially, this past Christmas. He occupied his leisure time reading, fishing and traveling and loved attending the Iowa State and Spencer Fairs.

Evan was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Helen in 1985, two brothers, Emil and Edward and one sister, Esther Abbott.

Survivors include one son, Donald Berry of Vail; two daughters, Arlene Wiederstein and her husband, Kendall of Audubon and Jean Birney and her husband, Lloyd of Denison; five grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Margaret Anderson of Odebolt and Hazel Lapel and her husband, Ray of Vail, one brother-in-law, Arden Amman and his wife, Catherine of Denison; also many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Saturday, January 13, 1996 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Thomas Buzbee officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison, Iowa. Marilyn Jepsen provided the organ accompaniment for vocalists Eric Bretey and Scott Wiederstein singing "Beyond the Sunset", "How Great Thou Art" and "In the Garden". Those serving as pallbearers were: Leon Thompson, Gaylord Johnson, Dennis Dozark, Monte Lapel, Bill Bretey and Jim Quandt. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Evelyn M. (Baer) Griffith (1906 - 1999)

Evelyn M. Griffith was born at Denison, Iowa July 19, 1906 the daughter of Richard G. and Alice Riddle Baer. She received her education in Crawford County Schools and was graduated from Denison High School with the class of 1925. She then furthered her education at Drake University, University Of Northern Iowa and Midwestern College from which she was graduated in 1970.

On January 24, 1942 Evelyn was united in marriage to Victor F. Griffith at Blair, Nebraska. Their union was blessed with one daughter, Vicki. They resided on an acreage in Coon Grove just south of Denison, Iowa where Evelyn continued to reside after Victor's death November 14, 1971.

Evelyn's love of children was evidenced by her 36 years of teaching, first in rural schools of Crawford and Shelby Counties and the last 14 years of her career teaching 4th grade at Denison Public School. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Denison, Iowa and the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed gardening and wildlife.

Due to failing health, Evelyn resided at the Denison Care Center for the past several years and it was there her death occurred on December 31, 1999. At the time of her death she had attained the age of 93 years, 5 months and 12 days.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Victor, seven sisters, Lillian Hugg, Jetta Frahm, Laura Walrod, Florence Savery, Pearl Savery, Verne James and Elsie Fuller, two brothers, Rover and Paul Baer.

Those remaining to cherish her memory include her daughter, Vicki, who lovingly cared for her, one brother, Ted Baer of California, nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Memorial services were held at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, January 8, 2000 at Wesleyan Church in Denison, Iowa with Dan C. Pfannebecker and Dennis Bell officiating. Music for the service included Mitch Carlyle and Alishia Adams singing two duets, "Take These Wings" and "In His Time" with Pat Menegay serving as pianist. A solo selection of "How Great Thou Art" was sung by Gladys Palencia with Rene Aguilar serving and instrumentalist. Honorary bearers included Kenneth and Maxine Buchanan, Lois Bliesman, James Laubscher, Vernon Lueck, Leslie Rath, Duane Neppl, Betty Griffin and Urban Neppl. A private interment was held Monday, January 3, 2000 at Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Everett Glen Graham (1909 - 1981)

Everett Glen Graham was born on Jan. 6, 1909, at Cameron, Missouri, the son of Thomas and Lillian Leona Rounds Graham. He died Aug, 6, 1981, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, at the age of 72.

Everett moved with his family to Iowa when he was nine years old. They made their home in the Deloit community, where he received his formal education.

On Jan. 31, 1935, Everett was united in marriage to Marion Comstock at Deloit. Together they made their home in Denison where Everett was employed, and owned various businesses. For many years he was known for his shoe repair business. At the time of his death he was operating his shoe business at his home.

In addition to his parents, Everett was preceded in death by three brothers, Gordon, Mearl and Earl.

Survivors include his wife, Marion of Denison; one daughter, Bonnie (Mrs. Ed) Frazier of Deloit; two sons, Donald of Manning, and Everett Allen and his future wife Terri Jansen of Manilla. Also by eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, one brother Bus of Independence, Mo., and three sisters, Lola (Mrs. Bill) Petersen of Denison, Verna (Mrs. Tom) Graham and Mrs. Inez Hansen both of Independence, Mo.

Funeral services were Aug. 8 at 10:30 a.m. at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Burial was in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens at Denison. Elder John Jones officiated at the services. Pallbearers were Jim Graham, Jack Wolfe, Ersdel Graham, Jim Petersen, Max Graham and Fred Bachman. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Fannie Elizabeth (Van Fleet) Kropf (1901 - 1990)

Fannie Elizabeth Kropf was born June 11, 1901, the daughter of John A. and Florence Kessel Van Fleet. She died Aug. 18, 1990 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Ia., at the age of 89.

Fannie was born on a farm in Grant County near Maysville, West Virginia where she grew up, and received her education in a rural school near her home. At the age of 15, she moved with her parents to a farm near Deloit, Ia., where her family continued farming.

Nov. 1, 1916, Fannie was united in marriage to Jake Kropf at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, by the Rev. Wm. Frese. They made their home on a farm where they were blessed with two daughters. Together they farmed in the area until in the early 1940's when they retired from farming and moved to Denison where they owned and operated "The Casino," a tavern located in Denison. In 1952, they sold the tavern and retired, enjoying their lives together and with their grandchildren. While retired they traveled to many parts of the United States, and also into Canada. They owned a summer cottage at Black Hawk Lake and spent time there enjoying family, friends and fishing.

Fannie was a loving and devoted wife and mother who cared for her family, insuring their health and well being. She made clothes for her children, wove rugs on a loom, canned foods, cooked and baked for them. She had a deep affection for her family especially her grandchildren. She occupied her spare time in her garden and enjoyed her flowers. She had many friends who themselves enjoyed her friendship, and special ones whose lives have been touched by her in a way they shall remember for a long while.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband Jake; brothers: Guy, Ronald, John, Lyle, Hershal and Paron; and one sister, Beatrice Riggleman.

Survivors include her daughters: Viola Cowlham and her husband, George of Odebolt and Awanna Hanson and her husband, Charles of Malvern; six grandchildren: Deloris and her husband, Sunny Coulter of Evergreen, Colo., Don Cowlham of Odebolt, Neil Hanson and his wife, Cheryl of Lakewood, Colo., Nancy Wite of Lincoln, Neb., James Hanson and his wife, Marsha of Wahoo, Neb., and Julie and her husband, Rick Wirth of Malvern; also nine great grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy Riggleman of Lahmansville, W. Va., and one sister-in-law, Alice Van Fleet of Fontanelle.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, at 10 a.m. at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Dr. James Cramer officiated at services with interment in the Garden of Devotion, Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Mrs. Karen Kahl was organist and Henry Henningsen was soloist. Solo selections were "Beyond the Sunset" and "In the Garden." Serving as pallbearers were La Verne Boyens, Jim Hugg, John O'Brien, Lyle Kropf, Edward Kropf and Lauren A. Miller. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Walter A. Huebner and Sons' Funeral Service in Denison.

Ferd K. Knutson (1901 - 1984)

Ferd K. Knutson was born on Nov. 28, 1901 at Inwood, Iowa, the son of Frank and Ambjor Jellum Knutson. He died June 30, 1984 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison at the age of 82.

Ferd was baptized as an infant and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Inwood. He was raised on a family farm and attended the rural schools near his home. He later attended Inwood High School.

On Sept. 21, 1929, Ferd was united in marriage to Julia Krohnke in Sioux City. Together they farmed near Inwood and later Larchwood, before moving to a farm near Schleswig in 1933. After their retirement in 1977 they moved into Schleswig where they were members of Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Ferd was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and one brother.

Survivors include his wife Julia of Schleswig, one brother, Lawrence Knutson of Sioux Falls, SD, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held July 3, at 10:30 a.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. The Rev. Paul Wiegert officiated at the services. Mrs. Don Thompson served as organist with the Immanuel Ladies Choir. Hymns included I'm But A Stranger Here and Amazing Grace. Pallbearers were Leon Gosch, Francis Krohnke, Gaylen Bahnsen, Edmund Hamann, Ralph Struck, and Alfred Schoenfeld. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Schleswig.

Florence (Hamann) Krohnke (1908 - 1975)

Mrs. Florence Krohnke was born to Mr. Henry Hamann and his wife Anna Janssen on the 28th of October in 1908 in Corwin Township of Ida County, Iowa. She was baptized into the Christian faith in the Grant Township Lutheran Church on January 24, 1909.

On March 25, 1923 she confirmed her faith in the same church where she was also married later on to Mr. Vernon H. Krohnke on December 15, 1927. One son, Verdelle, was born to this couple. Mrs. Krohnke lived with her husband in the Schleswig community all her life also following the death of her husband on the 3rd of November, 1958.

She passed away Thursday afternoon, May 22, 1975, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison at the age of 66 years, 3 months and 28 days. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon, and her parents.

She is survived by her son, Verdelle Krohnke of Janesville, Wisconsin, his wife Marilyn, also their two sons, her grandsons David and Eric as well as a number of distant relatives and close friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday, May 24, 1975, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig, Iowa with Rev. Theo. A. Letzring officiating. The congregation sang "We Now Implore God the Holy Ghost" and the choir sang "Draw Us to Thee". Bearers were Walter Davis, Leon Petersen, Bernard Hamann, Bart Bielenberg, Dr. D.L. Schmidt and Edwin Schmadeke. Interment was in the Morgan Cemetery.

Florence Mae (Johnson) Hedstrom (1903 - 1996)

Florence Mae Hedstrom was born on a farm in Hayes Township, Ida County, Iowa, May 14, 1903, the daughter of Oscar Carl and Maggie Anderson Johnson. The family soon moved to a farm in Crawford County near Kiron where she was raised. She received her education in the rural school near her home and attended the Kiron High School.

On February 17, 1926, Florence was united in marriage with Jubel F. Hedstrom at her parents' home. Their union was blessed with six children, Gerald, Evangeline, Bueal, Burdette, Maydelle and Evelyn. They made their home on a farm north of Kiron where they farmed until 1963 when they retired and moved to Kiron.

Florence was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family and participating in her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren's activities. Other, interests throughout her life included crocheting, sewing, flower and vegetable gardening, baking, sharing the results of her culinary skills with all she knew, and traveling every opportunity she had, both near and far. Her faith in Christ, church and daily Bible reading were of utmost importance in Florence's life. She was a prayerful, faithful and active member of First Baptist Church in Kiron having served as a Deaconess. She enjoyed many fellowship opportunities in her community and was a member of the Kiron American Legion Auxiliary.

Jubel died December 31, 1985 and Florence continued to reside in their home in Kiron. She was blessed to have spent this past Christmas with her family.

Florence died, following a brief illness, Tuesday morning, December 31,1996 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa. At the time of her death she had attained the age of 93 years, 7 months and 17 days.

Including her parents and husband, Florence was preceded in death by one son, Burdette Hedstrom, one great grandson, Dustin Ryan Allen, one brother, Russell Johnson and one sister, Bernice Wilson.

Those who remain to cherish her memory include five children and their spouses, Gerald and Shirley Hedstrom of Ida Grove, Iowa, Evangeline and William Webster of Kiron, Iowa, Bueal and DeLoise Hedstrom of Denison, Iowa, Maydelle and Harvey Oslund of Golden, Colorado and Evelyn and James Moller of Denison, Iowa, 14 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren, three sisters, Myrtle Larson and Ferne Wilson both of Denison, Iowa and Dorothy and her husband, Irving Mellin of Greeley, Colorado, nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, January 3, 1997 at the First Baptist Church in Kiron, Iowa with the Rev, Larry Odle officiating. Congregational hymns for the service included "Blessed Assurance" and "Because He Lives" with Mrs. John W. Larson serving as organist. Special selections included "Heirlooms" sung by her granddaughters, "Bless God" offered by Glenda Larsen, Gail Lacey and Glee Crippin and a duet "Just A Closer Walk With Thee" sung by Brent and Debi Lindgren. Debi Lindgren served as pianist. Grandson Dawson Oslund read the scriptures and offered prayer and Florence's son-in-law, Harvey Oslund was Eulogist. Casket bearers were Irvin Larsen, Douglas Lacey, David Crippin, Carl Ulshafer, Alan Hedstrom, Paul Hedstrom Kevin Appier, Dawson Oslund, Brent Lindgren and Brett Moller. Interment was in the Kiron Cemetery at Kiron, Iowa. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Francis John Lingle (1901 - 1988)

Francis John Lingle was born on May 18, 1901 at Denison, Ia., the son of Noah Lingle and Bertha Habel Lingle. He died on Jan. 9, 1988 at the Dunlap Care Center in Dunlap, Ia., having attained the age of 86 years.

In 1906, Francis moved with his family to Bay City, Texas. They lived there for five years, moving to South Dakota for two years and then back to the Denison area. Francis was a section foreman for the Chicago-Northwestern Railroad for many years.

Francis and Freida Mesenbrink were united in marriage at Elk Point, S.D., on Dec. 24, 1930. To this union four children were born. Francis and Freida were both residents of the Dunlap Care Center.

In addition to his parents, Francis was preceded in death by one brother, Albert Lingle and one sister, Ada Powers.

Survivors include his wife Freida of Dunlap Care Center; two daughters, Frances Marie and her husband, Richard McGhghy of Clear Water, Fla., and Patricia Buss of Sioux City; and two sons: Alfred Lingle of Stockton, Calif., and Allen Lingle and his wife Marita of Denison. Also surviving are two step-children, William Oldfield and his wife Irene of Dow City, and Laura and her husband Virgil Johnson of Beloit, Wis.; fifteen grandchildren and two sisters: Catherine O'Connell of Denison and Edna Hickey of Des Moines.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Rev. James W. Ristvedt officiated. Mrs. Darold Kahl served as organist for Mr. and Mrs. Henry Henningsen, duet. Pallbearers were Larry Berner, Jeffery Lingle, Brian Lingle, Robert Schrader, Jerry Speake and Dennis L. Huebner. Interment was in the Oakland Cemetery at Denison. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison.

Francis William Doidge (1905 - 1995)

Francis William Doidge was born on a farm in East Boyer Township near Denison, Iowa, February 21, 1905, the son of William Roger and Sophie Marie Plough Doidge. He was raised on the farm and received his formal education in the local rural schools. Following his schooling he was employed by area farmers.

On April 27, 1942 Francis entered the United States Army and served his country during World War II with Company B, 736th Tank Battalion in the European, African and Middle Eastern Theaters. Upon his discharge, October 2, 1945, he returned to Denison where he was employed as a carpenter for area contractors, including Walter Hass and Max Waldo. Francis spent his retirement years in Denison nost recently residing at the Denison Care Center.

Francis died Wednesday morning, June 7,1995 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 90 years, 3 months and 16 days.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Denison, American Legion Post 8, Denison, Iowa, Ninus L. Hunt V.F.W. Post 2504, Denison, Iowa and in earlier years he enjoyed repairing televisions and radios.

Including his parents, Francis was preceded in death by four brothers, Edward, Leon, Roy and Walter Doidge and one sister, Marie Davis.

Those who remain to cherish his memory include two sisters, Irene and Edna Doidge both of Denison, sister-in-law Helen Doidge of Castana, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, great great niece, Melanie Radcliffe of Denison, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, June 10, 1995 at the First United Methodist Church in Denison, Iowa with Dr. Edward R. Peterson officiating. Ann Voggesser served as organist playing "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" and "How Great Thou Art". Casket bearers included Robert Crampton, Emil Bielfeldt, Gene Champion, Howard McMinimee, Vince Keating and Wayne Petersen. Military Honors were provided by the American Legion Post 8, Denison, Iowa. Interment was in the Oakland Cemetery in Denison.The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Frank B. Lorensen (1906 - 1982)

Frank B. Lorensen was born on Sept. 1, 1906 near Buck Grove, Iowa, the son of Jess and Anna Thoem Lorensen. He died Dec. 17, 1982 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, at the age of 76.

Frank was baptized and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He spent his early years on a family farm near Buck Grove. After completing his education in the rural schools he started a career of farming.

On Feb. 9, 1938, Frank was united in marriage to Alice Ketelsen at Charter Oak. Together they made their first home on a farm south of Charter Oak. They continued to farm south of Charter Oak until 1972, when they retired and moved into Charter Oak. Frank was a longtime member of St. John's Lutheran Church.

In addition to his parents, Frank was preceded in death by two sisters, Rosa and Emma and one brother, Louie Ludwig.

Survivors include, his wife Alice of Charter Oak, two daughters, Jeanette Lorensen of Omaha, Kevin and Karlyn, both at home in Charter Oak. Also surviving are three brothers, John Lorensen of Denison, Emil Lorensen of Charter Oak and Herman Lorensen of Jefferson, and two sisters, Anna Else of Omaha, Neb. and Adelia Rosburg of Charter Oak, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Dec. 20, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church.

Frank Julius Jensen (1901 - 1981)

Frank Julius Jensen was born Oct. 6, 1901, on a farm near Dunlap, the son of Christian and Grace Cowdery Jensen.

At an early age he moved with his family to Carroll and then to Denison. He attended the Denison Schools, graduating from high school with the class of 1920. Frank then furthered his education at the Iowa State University at Ames for two years. Upon completing his education he was employed at the Express Company in Denison.

On March 2, 1927, Frank was united in marriage with Leona Rolls at Logan. To this union, one son, Russell, was born. They made their home on a farm in Crawford County where they resided for the next 25 years.

In 1952, they moved to Denison where they operated the Denison Bowling Alley until. 1957, Frank was then employed by the City of Denison, first as a Street Commissioner, a position he held for several years, and later as a Denison Police officer. He then served as a Crawford County Deputy Sheriff for a few years. He was later employed as Bailiff for the Crawford County District Court, a job from which he retired from in 1976 due to ill health.

Frank continued to reside in Denison and most recently at the Denison Care Center and it was there he died Dec. 26, 1981. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 80 years, 2 months, and 20 days. Frank was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Denison, the Sylvan Lodge No. 507, A.F. & A.M., Denison. The Abu-Bekr Shrine, and the Consistory, Scottish Rite Of Free Masonary in Sioux City.

Frank was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Doris Jensen.

He is survived by his wife, Leona of Denison; one son Russell and his wife Jenevie Jensen of Thiensville, Wis.; two grandchildren, Chris and Tina Jensen of Thiensville, Wis.; and one brother, Perry Jensen of Denison. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Dec. 29 at the United Presbyterian Church in Denison with the Rev. James D. Cobb officiating Comfort in music was provided by Henry Henningsen as soloist and Mrs. Roy Voggesser as organist.

Pallbearers included Chris Jensen, Henry Rolls III, Wesley Brandenburg, Allen Brandenburg, Paul Ackerman, Kenneth Peterson and Edward Blackman. Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery in Denison. A Masonic Service was held at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 28 at the Maxwell Funeral Home in Denison with the Sylvan Lodge No. 507 A.F. & A.M. of Denison conducting the service. The Maxwell Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Fred C. Berndt (1903 - 2001)

Fred C. Berndt was born July 1, 1903 the son of William and Anna Mathies Berndt. He died Wednesday, April 25, 2001 at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa at the age of ninety-seven.

Fred was born on a farm near Dunlap, Iowa and was baptized in Christ in Earling, Iowa. He received his education at the Mantino Rural School. After receiving his education, Fred helped on the family farm west of Dunlap and was married to Fay Burger.

On June 24, 1942, Fred was united in marriage to Olga Jensen at the Lutheran Parsonage in Laurel, Nebraska. The couple settled on a farm near Dunlap, Iowa and were blessed with the birth of two sons, Charles and Ronald. They farmed until 1970 and later moved to Denison where Fred worked as a mechanic.

On April 16, 1993, his wife, Olga died and Fred subsequently was married to Vanita Winter on June 14, 1995 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. They made their home at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison. Fred was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. He enjoyed mechanical work and remodeling old homes. In his leisure time Fred enjoyed fishing, hunting and trapping.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Olga in 1993; his wife, Vanita in 1996; one grandchild; three brothers, William in infancy, Charlie, John; five sisters, Sophie, Mary, Stella, Bertha and Clara.

Survivors include two sons, Charles Berndt and his wife, Barbara of Nixa, Missouri; Ronald Berndt and his wife, Claudia of Thornton, Colorado; one step-daughter, Marlene Berndt and her husband, Frank of Denison; two step-sons, Marvin Jensen and his wife, Shirley of Denison; Robert Jensen of Omaha; sixteen grandchildren and fourteen greatgrandchildren; one brother, Frank Berndt and his wife, Marlene of Denison; two sisters-in-law, Enid Berndt and Alice Berndt, both of Denison; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, April 28, 2001 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa with burial at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Denison. Rev. David Sewing officiated the service and Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "How Great Thou Art", "The Old Rugged Cross" and "I Know that My Redeemer Lives". Pallbearers were: Sean Lambeth, Brock Grimm, Todd Berndt, Terry Berndt, Scott Kilker and Mike Linn. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to return to Zion Lutheran Church for fellowship and lunch, served by the Ladies Aid and Evening Guild. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Fred Brockman (1906 - 2000)

Fred Brockman was born on April 11, 1906, the son of Henry and Bertha Frahm Brockman. He died Sunday, May 28, 2000 at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa at the age of ninety-four.

Fred was born on a farm northwest of Berne, Iowa and was baptized in Christ at St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak on November 28, 1909 by Rev. Amstein and later confirmed there on August 2, 1925.

He received his education in a rural school near his home and helped his family on the farm. In 1933, Fred began farming on his own.

On May 5, 1937, he was united in marriage to Esther Gosch in Morningside, Iowa by Rev. Otten. After their marriage, Fred and Esther continued to farm in Hanover Township. In 1946, because of health reasons, Fred and Esther retired from farming and moved to Charter Oak, where the couple remained for twenty-six years. In 1947, Fred became the area agent for the Lutheran Brotherhood, selling insurance for twenty years.

Fred enjoyed reading, playing cards with friends and working with wood, making clocks, end tables and other items. Fred was very proud of his very first car purchased in 1917, but had a fondness for the 1926 Ford Model T Roadster. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, serving as the church treasurer for several years and of the Lutheran Laymen's League, serving as chairman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his loving, wife, Esther in 1994, his brothers: Frank, Clarence, William and Carl and one sister, Sadie.

Survivors include his sister Mabel Nelson of Denison, Iowa; his brother-in-law, Lawrence Gosch and his wife, Marie of Ida Grove; several nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 2 P.M. Friday, June 2, 2000 at the St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. L.C. Gebhardt officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Art Beeck provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "How Great Thou Art" and "I'm But a Stranger Here". Those serving as pallbearers were: Virtus Brockman, Ken Thompson, Wilbur Reimers, Robert Carritt, Wayne Gosch and Robert Lahr. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak was in charge of arrangements.

Fred C. Miller (1909 - 1990)

Fred C. Miller, known to all as Fritz, was born the son of Ferdinand and Caroline Henrichsen Miller, Feb. 21, 1909, and died April 1, 1990, at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison at the age of 81 years.

The formative years of his youth were spent on the family farm in Monona County near Soldier, Ia., and at the age of seven, moved with his family to a farm near Schleswig, where he received his education in rural schools and helped on his family farm. As a young man, he worked on his uncle's ranch in Colorado and Wyoming before enlisting in the Armed Services in 1942. While in service, Fritz served his country in Panama for some time before receiving his discharge in 1945.

After completing his military obligation, Fritz returned to Schleswig where he operated a bowling alley and worked for the VFW. In 1980, he moved to Eventide where he lived until his death, and occupied his time with the residents. Throughout his life Fritz enjoyed working and being with people which is particularly evident as a resident of Eventide. All the residents anticipated a visit with Fritz as much as he enjoyed his visits with them. He was a member of the United Church of Christ and the American Legion in Schleswig.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a baby sister, Frieda; three brothers, Julius, Alfred and Raymond, known also as Buster.

Survivors include his sister, Viola Carstens of Battle Creek; one sister-in-law, LaMae Miller of Ida Grove, many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig. Rev. Harold E. Schaible officiated at the services with interment in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. Mrs. Evelyn Johnson was organist and Mrs. Rubie Kastner was soloist. Solo selections were "Rock of Ages" and "Asleep in Jesus." The American Legion and VFW Post No. 3930 of Schleswig were pallbearers. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Walter A. Huebner and Sons' Funeral Service of Schleswig.

Pastor Frederick A. Wiese (1906 - 1989)

Pastor Frederick A. Wiese was born November 22, 1906, at Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He died December 1, 1989 at the age of 83, while residing at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison. He was the son of Theodore Laurentius and Ingeborg Janet Peterson Wiese.

Pastor Wiese was Baptized in the Christian Faith as an infant December 30, 1906 by his grandfather Pastor M. F. Wiese and later Confirmed in the Lutheran Faith by Pastor John Schmidtt.

As a young boy, he received his early education in Milwaukee, and attended Parochial School there. He continued his education at Concordia College in St. Paul, Minnesota, and then Concordia Theological Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri where he graduated in 1931. He served his Vicarage at Waynesboro, Virginia from 1929 to 1930 and also taught in their Parochial School.

In 1931 Pastor Wiese was ordained and installed at Emmanuel Lutheran Chruch in Lake View, Iowa by the Rev. Adolph Schwidder and began his service for the Lord.

Pastor Wiese and Alma Luckow of Lake View, Iowa were united in marriage April 18, 1933 by Pastor Adolph Schwidder at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Lake View. Their lives together were blessed with four children. He was a devoted husband and loving father who shared his time with God, Country, and family. While serving in World War II, he did not see his youngest child Mary until she was two years old.

From 1942 to 1946, Pastor Wiese received a leave of absence from his Christian Community in Lake View to serve as Chaplain in the Army Air Corps. The service to his Lord and Country during World War II took his overseas for two and one half years where he was decorated with nine Battle Stars and three Medals. For eighteen months, he served with the 927th Combat Signal Corps Battalion which became his favorite outfit.

After having served his Country, he returned to his Congregation remaining there until 1948 when the Lord guided him to Immanuel in Schleswig. He was installed in August, by Pastor C.W. Schmidt of Denison, and began a service to the Lord that saw the Congregation grow from 400 to 750, the construction of a new Church and an education unit having 24 class rooms. Pastor Wiese was also pastor of St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Ricketts from 1949 to 1972.

During his service as Pastor of Immanuel in Schleswig, he also served as a member of: the Board of Lutheran Home Finding which is now called the Lutheran Family Services: the Synods Board of Braille Work: Chaplain in the V.F.W. and American Legion; and Councelor of the Denison Circut. Pastor Wiese retired on Easter 1975. He received the St. Martens of Tours Medal of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod in 1984.

He is preceded in death by: his parents; one brother Theodore; and a grandson Dana Wiese. Survivors include: his wife, Alma; two sons; Arland of Fort Dodge; Lawrence and his wife Alpha of Kearney, Missouri; two daughters; Ardeth Neumann and her husband Edmund of Visalia, California; Mary Barth and her husband Leonard of Worburn, Massachusetts; eleven grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and a sister-in-law Charolette Wiese of Indianapolis, Indiana.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 6, 1989, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Pastor Richard E. Nelson and Pastor Kenneth Hessel officiated at the services with interment in the Morgan Cemetery at Schleswig. Mrs. Marlene Hight was organist. The Congregational Hyms were "Abide With Me" and "How Great Thou Art". The American Legion and V.F.W. Post 3930 of Schleswig conducted Military services and served as pallbearers. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig, Iowa.

Frieda (Jacobs) Hinrichsen (1906 - 1987)

Frieda Hinrichsen was born on September 11, 1906 in Morgan Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the daughter of Friedrich Jacobs and Emilie Geisler Jacobs. She died at the Sunrise Manor in Sioux City on July 5, 1987 at the age of 80 years.

Frieda attended rural schools. On September 14, 1928 she and Elmer Hinrichsen of Charter Oak, Ia. were united in marriage in Denison, Ia. To this union two children were born. They farmed near Charter Oak until 1969 when they moved to Schleswig, Ia. Elmer died July 28, 1969.

Frieda was baptized and confirmed at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig and was a life long member of the church. She was a member of the Ladies Guild and Homemakers Club of Schleswig.

In addition to her parents and husband Elmer, Frieda was preceded in death by an infant son and four brothers.

Survivors include her son La Wayne and his wife Patricia Hinrichsen of Sioux City, Ia., six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Alvina Streck of Ida Grove and Hedwig and her husband, Richard Dorale of Schleswig, Ia.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 9, 1987 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig with burial in the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens near Denison, Ia. Reverend Darrell Bailey officiated. Mrs. Dorothy Jessen served as organist for Mrs. Barbara Buffum. Selections were "How Great Thou Art" and "The Lord is My Shepherd." Serving as pallbearers were Larry Baak, Fred Jacobs, William Brockman, James Schultz, Lowell Hinrichsen and Byron Weiss. Huebner Funeral Home of Schleswig was in charge of arrangements.

Frieda (Clausen) Else (1908 - 2005)

Frieda Else was born January 24, 1908, the daughter of Andrew and Kathrine Iversen Clausen. She died Friday, February 25, 2005 at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa at the age of ninety-seven.

Frieda was born on the family farm south of Ida Grove, Iowa. She was baptized in Christ and confirmed at the Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Church in Schleswig as a young adult in 1929. She received her education in a rural school.

On February 26, 1930, Frieda was united in marriage to Edgar Else at Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Church in Schleswig. The couple settled on a farm near Schleswig and were blessed with the birth of a daughter, Delores.

Together, Frieda and Edgar farmed for seventeen years near the Schleswig area. After their retirement in 1947, the couple moved to Schleswig and Frieda helped Edgar with the custodial duties at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. Frieda devoted her life to taking care of her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Whenever possible, she spent time quilting, crocheting, cooking, baking and flower gardening. She also enjoyed playing cards and was a member of several card clubs. She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig and their Women's Guild for over fifty years. Frieda moved into Eventide on November 10, 2000.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edgar in 1985; five brothers, Jurgen, Herbert and his wife Sylvia, Andrew, Leonard, and Paul and his wife, Irene; one brother-in-law, Lenhardt Teut; and her son-in-law, Milford Schultz.

She is survived by her daughter, Delores of Charter Oak; three grandchildren, Sheila Schultz of Independence, Missouri; Brad Schultz and his wife, Judy of Schleswig; and Sherry Hornung and her husband, Phil of Union City, California; five great-grandchildren, Amanda and Kimberly Hornung of Union City, California, and Kyle, Kellen and Tanner Schultz of Schleswig; one sister, Anna Teut of Schleswig; two sisters-in-law, Bernice Clausen of Schleswig and Mildred Clausen of Denison; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, March 1, 2005 at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Chris Burtnett officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Wendy Bumann provided the congregational hymns "How Great Thou Art", "Beautiful Savior" and "Nearer, My God, to Thee". Those serving as pallbearers were: Delmer Clausen, Delbert Clausen, Kellen Schultz, Tanner Schultz, Wayne Miller, Larry Clausen, Kyle Schultz and Brad Schultz. Frieda (Meyer) Lee (1909 - 1991)

Frieda Lee was born May 22, 1909, the daughter of Whilhelm and Dora Claussen Meyer of Mapleton, Iowa. She died April 25, 1991, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa, at the age of 81 years.

Frieda was baptized July 11, 1909, and Confirmed May 6, 1923, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Soldier Township. She received her education in Immanuel's Lutheran School.

On April 12, 1939 Frieda was united in marriage to Darold W. Lee at Onawa, Iowa. The couple were blessed with the birth of three sons.

She was active in Ladies Aid and Church Choir at Immanuel Lutheran in Soldier Township, St. Luke's Lutheran in Ricketts, and Immanuel Lutheran in Schleswig. Frieda was preceded in death by her parents, three infant brothers, and one infant sister.

Survivors include her husband Darold of Schleswig, son Lowell, wife Judy and children Kristin, Karla and Kathy at home; son Loren, wife Marlene and children Evan of Chadron, Nebraska, Andrea at Northwest Missouri State University of Maryville, Missouri, and Ryan at home; son Dwayne, wife Connie, and children Darren of Sioux City, Derek in the U.S. Air Force based at Lowry Air Force Base, Denver, Colorado, and Dane at home; and great-grand-son Spencer, Son of Evan Lee.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, April 29, 1991 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa, with Rev. Donald R. Wagner officiating the service and the grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Mrs. Marlene Hight served as organ accompanist for solist Ruble Kastner singing "Take My Hand Precious Lord" and the congregational hymn "Lift High The Cross". Honorary pallbearers include Evan Lee, Derek Lee, Ryan Lee, Herman Bockelmann, Harvey Lafrentz, Louis Kuehl and Donald Teut. Pallbearers were Darren Lee, Dane Lee, John O'Brien, John Jorgensen, David Claussen and Earl Knop. Walter A. Huebner and Sons' Funeral Home of Schleswig was in charge of the arrangements.

Friedrich B. Carstensen (1909 - 1998)

Friedrich Broder Carstensen was born July 26, 1909 the son of Jens and Margaretha Petersen Carstensen. He died at the Willow Dale Care Center in Battle Creek, Iowa, Sunday, December 20, 1998 at the age of eighty-nine.

Friedrich was bom in Bordelum, Germany. He was baptized in Christ in the Evangelical Church in Bordelum, August 22, 1909 by Pastor Toedt and later confirmed on April 13, 1924. He received his education and farmed with his family in Germany, before moving to America in 1930. He also farmed with his family in America and then entered the United States Army, serving his country for five years.

On February 25, 1949, Friedrich was united in marriage to Elsie Petersen Schroeder In Schleswig, Iowa by Rev. Friedrich Weise. The couple settled on a farm four miles north of Schleswig.

Friedrich was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig. He was a very loving husband, father and grandfather, who enjoyed spending time with his family. Friedrich will always be remembered by his saying, "Always go forward, never go backwards".

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Johann and Hans, and two sisters, Lena Carstensen and Anna Harder.

Survivors include his wife, Elsie of Ida Grove; two sons, Wayne Schroeder and his wife, Carolyn of Ida Grove; Jens Carstensen of Sioux City; one daughter, Janice Nemitz and her husband, David of Denison; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; one brother, Carsten Carstensen; one sister, Inge Carstensen, both of Ida Grove; many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 23, 1998 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa, with Rev. Merle Mahnken officiating. Interment was in the Morgan Cemetery, Schleswig. Sharon Thompson was the organist with congregational hymns being "What A Friend We Have In Jesus", "Let All Together Praise Our God" and "I Know That My Redeemer Lives". Pallbearers were Daniel Schroeder, Dean Schroeder, Gaylord Boeck, Timothy Stoppel, Darryl Petersen and Alan Nemitz. Arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Schleswig.

Geneva E. M. (Stegemann) Andresen (1904 - 1993)

Geneva E.M. Andresen was born on a farm near Schleswig, Ia., Jan. 20, 1904 the daughter of Frank and Augusta Mohr Stegemann. She was raised in the Schleswig area where she received her education in the local rural schools.

On Feb. 14, 1924, Geneva was united in marriage with Henry Andresen. Their union was blessed with two sons, Burdell and Dwight. They farmed in the Schleswig and Ida Grove area for several years. Following their divorce she farmed with her son, Dwight, in the Crawford and Monona County areas. Geneva then moved to Denison where she and Dwight owned and operated the Highway Cafe for a number of years. In later years she was employed as a housekeeper and babysitter for the John Meyer family.

Geneva moved to the Manilla Manor, Manilla, Ia., Dec. 7, 1988 and it was there her death occurred Thursday evening, March 4, 1993. At the time of her death she had attained the age of 89 years, one month and 14 days.

She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig and in her spare time enjoyed fishing.

Including her parents, Geneva was preceded in death by one brother, Frank Stegemann, one sister, Bernice Stegemann, and two great granddaughters, Crystal Damge and Sonya Cuvelier.

Those left to cherish her memory include two sons and their wives, Burdell and Irene Andresen of Waverly, la., and Dwight and Betty Andresen of Lafayette, Colo, three grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, one great great granddaughter, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., Monday, March 8, 1993, at the Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison, Ia., with the Rev. James M. Schatz officiating. Music for the service was provided by soloist and organist Suzi Swarthout singing "Old Rugged Cross" and "Just A Closer Walk With Thee." Pallbearers included Dan C. Pfannebecker, Anthony B. Hinners, Joseph Griffin, and Cyrenus Knief. Interment was in the Morgan Township Cemetery at Schleswig, Ia. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

George Theodore Herbert Spahn (1906 - 1985)

George Theodore Herbert Spahn of Boone, Ia., formerly of Denison, died at Boone County Hospital on Dec. 27, 1985 at 2 p.m. His funeral was Dec. 31, 1985 at the Trinity Lutheran Church at Boone.

He was born in Hanover Township, Denison, May 11, 1906, the son of Jurgen Spahn and Sophia Spahn (nee Jensen) and reached the age of 79 years, 7 months and 16 days.

On Feb. 28, 1955 he was united in marriage to Ruth Nadine Hardesty of Boone at Trinity Lutheran Church. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Boone. He farmed until he moved to Boone and then was employed at Rolfers Manufacturing until he retired. He was baptized into the Lutheran faith as an infant and confirmed in 1920 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. George was a World War II veteran and was stationed in Germany for two years.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth; daughter Nickie Burgoon of Cedar Rapids; two step-daughters, Barbara Smith and Pat Van Pelt of Boone; one step-son, Clarence Hardesty of Boone; one brother, Leonard Spahn of Dow City and one sister, Anna Spahn of Denison; 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren and many friends.

Pallbearers were Shelly Gurland, Coleen Martin, Patty Burkheimer, Terry Musgrove, Juli Van Pelt, Kay Robertson. Soloist was Jana Baily who sang "How Great Thou Art", "The Lord's Prayer" and "An Old Rugged Cross." Officating minister was Rev. William Shupe of Trinity Lutheran Church, Boone. Burial was in the Boone Memorial Garden in Boone with veterans' graveside services, firing squad and flag folders.

Gertrude (Nemitz) Schultz (1905 - 1994)

Gertrude Schultz, the daughter of Fred F. and Louise Nemitz, was born on March 12, 1905. She died on Wednesday, May 25, 1994 at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison at the age of eighty-nine years.

Gertrude was born on a family farm in Hanover Township. She was baptized as an infant and later confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hanover Township. She received her education in a rural school near her home and at St. Paul Lutheran School.

As a young woman, Gertrude helped her family on the farm until she was united in marriage to Fred W. Schultz on February 4, 1956 when they moved to Denison.

Gertrude was employed as a cook at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital for twelve years and at the Zion Lutheran School for ten years. After her retirement she took care of elderly people and her daughter Judy. Gertrude was a loving wife and a caring mother and grandmother. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, their Ladies Aid, Evening Guild, V.F.W., Denison Legion Auxiliary and the Crawford County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed cooking, sewing and making quilts for her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Fred in 1960; one daughter, Judy in 1985; a great-granddaughter, Jessica Linn in 1984; one brother, Harold Schultz and one sister, Lydia Hollander.

Survivors include: one daughter, Ima Jean Hansohn and her husband, LeRoy of Kiron; one son, Wayne and his wife, Betty of Denison; fourteen grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson; also three sisters, Edna Kastner of Schleswig; Leona Aldag and her husband, Ted of Schleswig and Lillie Johnson and her husband, Bayard of Kiron; two sisters-in-law, Vernette Schultz and Lillie Schultz, both of Eventide and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Saturday, May 28, 1994 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, with Rev. Kurt Kaiser officiating the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Henery Henningsen singing "Let Us Ever Walk With Jesus" and "I'm But a Stranger Here" and congregational hymn "What a Friend We Have in Jesus''. Pallbearers were: Jim Steinkuehler, Brent Hennings, Steve Hansohn, Mike McKee, David McKee and Jeff Schultz. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Gilbert Kastner (1902 - 1973)

Funeral services for Gilbert H. Kastner were held Monday morning, April 9, 1973, at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, with the Rev. R.J. Ratzlaff officiating. Mrs. John Evers was the organist. Mrs. Ernie Grell and Mrs. G.M. Johnson sang "How Great Thou Art" and "Rock of Ages".

Gilbert H. Kastner was born to Ed Kastner and his wife, Lene nee Friedrichsen, on July 2, 1902, in Otter Creek Township, Crawford County, Iowa. He passed away at the family farm at 5 p.m. April 5, 1973, having attained the age of 70 years, 9 months and 3 days.

He was baptized and confirmed in the United Church of Christ and served as a member of the Church Board in the early 1950's.

On January 28, 1925, he married Rose Schug in Ida County. They farmed until moving to Schleswig in 1952 and resided at 209 Elm Street. From 1951 until 1966, Mr. Kastner served as an adjustor for Farmers Mutual Insurance of Schleswig.

Besides his wife, Rose, Mr. Kastner is survived by two sons, Verdell and Rawlo, five grandchildren, one brother Louie of Schleswig, one sister, Leota, Mrs. Lyle Worley, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Robert Kastner.

Pallbearers were Leslie Schug, Arlynn Schug, Keith Worley, Ronnie Hemer, Orben Kastner and Burness Kastner. Interment took place Tuesday, April 10, at Morgan Cemetery.

Hans B. Carstensen (1906 - 1998)

Hans B. Carstensen was born December 24, 1906, the son of Jens and Margaretha Petersen Carstensen. He died Sunday, October 4, 1998 at the Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, Iowa at the age of ninety-one.

Hans was born in Ostbordelum, Germany where he was baptized and confirmed in Christ. He received his elementary education in Germany and subsequently attended agricultural school there. After completing his education, he farmed with his father. In 1930, he moved to America with his family.

In 1932, Hans farmed with his brother, Johann near Deloit, Westside, Manning, Arthur and Schleswig. In 1947, they bought the farm eight miles north east of Schleswig where he farmed with his brother, Johann and his sister, Lena.

Hans was a kind, considerate and loving man with a quiet but deep faith in his Lord and Savior from whom he received his wisdom. He was a peace keeper, a soft spoken and gentle man who loved his family dearly.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Johann; and two sisters, Lena and Anna Harder. Survivors include two brothers, Carsten, Friedrich and his wife, Elsie and one sister, Inga all of Ida Grove, Iowa.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., Thursday, October 8, 1998 at the United Church of Christ, Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Gordon Hoyt officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Dorothy Jessen provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Nancy Krueger singing "How Great Thou Art" and "Take Thou My Hand and Lead Me" and congregational hymn "He Leadeth Me". Those serving as pallbearers were: Jens Peter Carstensen, Thomas Senhen, Wayne Schroeder, Grover Senhen, Merle Lansink and Dave Nemitz. Hans Carl Schnoor (1903 - 1985)

Hans Carl Schnoor was born on Aug. 12, 1903, in Willow Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the son of Jacob and Ida Schnoor. He died Tuesday, Feb. 19 (1985) ,in San Dimas, Calif, at the age of 81.

Carl spent his early years on a family farm in Crawford County. He received bis formal education in the rural schools near his home. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak.

On Jan. 8, 1945, he was united in marriage to the former Esther Swarz in Woodbine. Together they farmed in the Ute and Charter Oak areas. In 1966, they purchased an acreage where they semi-retired from farming. They moved into the Ricketts community in 1967.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, Ernie and Vernon and one daughter, Arlene and one brother, Ferd.

Survivors include his wife, Esther of Ricketts; one daughter, Betty Jean Gress and son-in-law Ira of Charter Oak; and one son, Delbert Creese, and daughter-in-law Betty of Glendora, Calif. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, one niece and two nephews, as well as a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Ricketts. Burial was in the St. Paul's Cemetery near Ricketts. The Vicar John Laatsch officiated at the services and graveside rites. The St. John's Ladies' Choir with Mrs. L. C. Gebhardt as organist provided music for the services. Hymns for the services included, How Great Thou Art and Asleep In Jesus. Serving as pallbearers were Dale Creese, Craig Creese, Jim Reitz, Darvin Landgraf, Ron Grove and Warren Henning. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Charter Oak.

Hans Detlefsen (1903 - 1993)

Hans Detlefsen was born at Neukrug, Germany, a province of Schleswig-Holsteln, December 17, 1903, one of four children of Heinrich and Augusta Lyss Detlefsen. He was raised in Germany where he was baptized and later confirmed in the Lutheran Faith. Hans attended school at Schuby and upon completion of his education he worked on the telegraph.

On October 30, 1923, he came to the United States and worked on a farm near Denison, Iowa, with his brother for a year and for a neighbor, Albert Schmidt for five years. In 1929, Hans started carpentering on his own. On December 8, 1934 he returned to Germany and was employed for two years by Mr. and Mrs. Henry Matzen at their seed nursery and artificial cattle breeding station.

On October 24, 1936 Hans returned to Denison, Iowa and was employed at the Hotel Denison. In July of 1937 the Matzens, with their daughter, Erna, came to Denison to visit.

Having become engaged in Germany but unable to marry there, Hans and Erna were united in marriage by the Rev. Schwedder at Schleswig, Iowa, July 12, 1937. The couple returned to Germany with her parents and Hans worked for his father-in-law for the next nine years.

Their union was blessed with one daughter Erika, and one son Guenter while they resided at Flensburg, Germany. On October 21, 1946, Hans returned to Schleswig, Iowa, to retain his United States Citizenship. Due to emmigration restrictions during World War II his family could not join him until January 24, 1948. After returning to Schleswig Hans was employed as a carpenter for five years for Ted Jepsen before beginning his own business. In 1956 Hans purchased the 29 room Governor Shaw home in Denison and converted it into six apartments, and in 1966 constructed the Detlefsen Apartment House in Denison.

In 1967 Hans and his son Guenter formed a partnership known as Detlefsen Construction Co. which they operated for many years working on several area projects.

Erna died April 20, 1980, and Hans continued to reside at their home in Schleswig until June of 1989 when he moved to the Denison Care Center.

Hans died early Thursday, April 29, 1993, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 89 years, 4 months, and 12 days.

Including his parents and his wife, Hans was preceded in death by one brother, one half brother, and two sisters.

Those left to cherish his memory include one daughter and her husband, Erika and Robert Ragsdell of Millington, Tennessee, one son and his wife, Guenter and Joyce Detlefsen of Schleswig, Iowa, five grandchildren, Scott Detlefsen and his wife Kathleen of Omaha, Nebraska, Brad Detlefsen of Schleswig, Iowa, Jeffrey Ragsdell, Heidi and her husband Curtis Gott, and Samantha Ragsdell all of Millington, Tennessee, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at the Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa, at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 1, 1993, with the Rev. Donald A. Wagner officiating. Music for the service was provided by Henry Henningsen singing "On Eagle's Wings" with Karen Kahl serving as organist. Honorary bearers included Scott Detlefsen, Brad Detlefsen, Jeffrey Ragsdell, Jim Miller, Larry Miller, Gary Preul, and Howard Christiansen. Casket bearers were Loren Jepsen, Rick Preul, Kelly Curtis, Roger Schneider, LeRoy Bumann, and Dale Reese. Interment was in the Morgan Township Cemetery at Schleswig, Iowa. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Hans D. H. Schneider (1904 - 1994)

Hans Detlef Heinrick Schneider, a resident of the Willow Dale Care Center in Battle Creek, Iowa, died on Saturday, December 31, 1994, at the age of 90 years.

Mr. Schneider was born on March 13, 1904 in Schleswig, Iowa, the son of Emll and Marie Knudsen Schneider.

He was married to Helen Schiernbeck in 1930 who passed away in 1937. On June 23, 1940, Hans was united In marriage to Jenny Kiertzner in Ida Grove, Iowa.

Hans was a lifelong farmer in the Ricketts, Schleswig and Battle Creek areas. He also sold seed corn while farming and later after retiring from farming he continued in the seed corn business. The couple moved into Battle Creek in 1965.

Hans was a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church in Battle Creek. He was a former member of the Soldier and Grant Towhship Lutheran Churchs and St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove. He served as the school superintendent for Soldier Township School for a number of years. He was also an avid pinochle player.

Survivors include his wife, Jenny; one son, Gene Schneider and special friend, Dorothy Kron of Battle Creek; one daughter, Janice and her husband, Duane Bridges of Atlanta, Ga.; 3 grandchildren, Rodney and Roy Schneider and Helen Hamaj; one great-granddaughter, Rachel Schneider; 1 sister, Dorothea Lynn of Chicago, Ill., and one brother, Albert Schneider of Schleswig.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, one brother, Edward Schneider and one sister, Katherine Schneider.

Funeral services were held at St. John's Lutheran Church in Battle Creek on Wednesday, January 4, 1995 with Rev. Donald H. Winterrowd officiating. Burial was at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Battle Creek. Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home of Battle Creek was in charge of arrangements.

Hans Henry Clausen (1905 - 1992)

Hans Henry Clausen was born on April 10, 1905, the son of Wilhelm and Emma Schroder Clausen. He died on Wednesday, October 7, 1992 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa at the age of eighty-seven years.

Hans was born in Pulveholz, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany and received his education in a German school in Pulveholz. After completing his formal education, he continued with his training in cabinet making which he studied for two years as an apprentice.

In 1924, Hans immigrated to the United States from his mother land in Germany. He subsequently settled in the Schleswig and Ida Grove areas and attended a rural school, to learn English. He received his U.S. citizenship, and in 1942, he entered the United States Army. Serving his country in 1943, he returned to Iowa where he settled in the Ida and Crawford County areas and farmed on various farms until his retirement in 1980. After his retirement, he made his home with Bernice Gronau and remained there until the time of his death.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, William, Frans, Ernst and one sister, Kater.

He is survived by a special friend, Bernice Gronau of Schleswig; one sister-in-law, Alberta Clausen of Denison; one sister Hertha Clausen of Schleswig, Germany; nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 9, 1992, at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, Iowa with Pastor James Schatz officiating; the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig, Iowa. Evelyn Johnson provided the organ accompaniment for soloist Rubie Kastner singing "Rock of Ages" and congregational hymn "What a Friend We Have in Jesus". Honorary Pallbearers were: Ronald Paulsen, Dewain Clausen, Donald Ullrich, Dudley Ullrich, Dyle Ullrich, Chris Ullrich and Dale Clausen. Pallbearers and Military Honors were V.F.W. Post 3930 and American Legion Post 645, Schleswig, Iowa. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Walter A. Huebner and Sons' Funeral Home in Schleswig.

Harley Thomas Jepsen (1903 - 1978)

Harley Thomas Jepsen, 74, of Ida Grove, died Saturday, Feb. 18, 1978, at Horn Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. Services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Christensen Funeral Home in Ida Grove. The Rev. Dennis Schultz officiated, with burial in the Ida Grove Cemetery.

Mr. Jepsen was born Feb. 21, 1903 in Otter Creek Township near Schleswig. He married Mildred Elizabeth Hanks March 24, 1940, in Denison. They lived in Ida Grove for 36 years, and he worked for Ida County. He was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Survivors include the widow; four sons, Thomas, Roger, LeRoy and Terry, all of Ida Grove; a daughter, Elizabeth Ann Key of Omaha, Nebr.; a sister Alice Jensen of Estherville; and 12 grandchildren.
