Ada Emma (Loeck) Weiss (1900 - 1993)

Ada Emma Weiss was born Nov. 13, 1900, the daughter of Robert and Heneritte Schultz Loeck. She died at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison on Tuesday, June 22, 1993 at the age of 92 years.

Ada was born on a farm near Charter Oak and was baptized at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hanover Township on Dec. 16, 1900. She received her education at St. Paul's Lutheran School and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith on March 28, 1915.

After receiving her education, Ada worked as a house girl until she was united in marriage to Arthur Weiss on April 22, 1923 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hanover Township. The couple settled on a farm north of Ft, Dodge where they lived until later purchasing a farm near Pomeroy, IA.

Arthur died on April 24, 1954 and Ada subsequently became employed at a nursing home in Ft. Dodge where she worked until moving to Ricketts in 1960.

While living in Pomeroy, Ada was active in the Lutheran church where she taught Sunday School for many years and sang in the church choir. After her retirement, she transferred her membership to St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Ricketts and was a member of their Ladies Aid. Additionally, she worked as the church custodian for 12 years before retiring and moving to the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison on Oct. 25, 1977.

Ada was a loving wife and sister whose Christian character is evidenced by the love she had for her Lord and Savior and the compassion she had for everyone. In her free time, she enjoyed baking, sewing and making crafts, and was a member of area sewing clubs.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Arthur, and one brother, Bernhard Loeck on Jan. 15, 1993.

Survivors include her brother, Raymond Loeck and his wife, Lesetta of Ricketts, several nieces, nephews and many friends.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday June 25, 1993 at the St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Ricketts, IA. Pastor Robert Hines officiated the service and grave side rites held at the North Lawn Cemetery in Fort Dodge, IA. Shirley Stull provided the organ accompaniment for Henry and Marge Henningsen singing "I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say" and "Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me" and congregational hymn "I Know that My Redeemer Lives." Pallbearers were Wayne Kuhlman, Paul Schwarz, Arlo Schwanz and Paul Briggle. The Walter A. Huebner and Sons Funeral Home in Charter Oak were in charge of arrangements.

Adela Charlotte (Johannsen) Jensen (1902 - 2002)

Adela Charlotte Johannsen Jensen was born to Peter W. And Anna Stier Johannsen on the family farm in Soldier Township, Crawford County, Iowa on October 27, 1902. She was called to her heavenly home on September 9, 2002. Adela resided alone in her home for many years. Recently, cancer required her to be hospitalized briefly and Hospice care was provided.

Her mother died on December 24, 1904 and she was raised by her father and step-mother, Mathilda Jochims Groth Johannsen. Adela was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith. She was a devoted lifetime member of the Frieden's Evangelical Lutheran Church (UCC) in Schleswig, Iowa. She attended a rural school and in 1919, moved into Schleswig with her parents. Adela graduated from the Schleswig High School in 1921 after which she attended. State Teacher's College at Cedar Falls, Iowa. She taught in rural schools for three years.

On September 23, 1924, Adela was united in marriage to Hugo Jacob Jensen at the Frieden's Evangelical Church in Schleswig. They moved to the family farm and were blessed with one daughter, Joyce Jean. In 1949, Hugo and Adela retired and moved into their new home in Schleswig. They enjoyed fifty-five years of marriage, celebrating many special days and events with family and friends.

She actively participated in numerous organizations including more than fifty years with the Dorcas Society (where she was lovingly referred to as "the peace maker"), the United Church of Christ School Superintendent for many years and also taught classes. She was a fervent community supporter and participated in the town's Centennial Celebration in 1999 by riding with her great-grandchildren in the parade, being honored as "Schleswig's Most Senior Citizen". Attending church activities, socializing with family and friends, needlework, reading, playing cards, and baking filled her days.

Adela traveled extensively to be part of her families lives. Her ninety-fifth birthday was noted in London, United Kingdom and France; her ninety-ninth anniversary was celebrated in California. In June and July of this year, she traveled east to participate in her great-grandchildren's festivities.

She will always be remembered for her remarkable memory, her humble unassuming manner, willing and kind deeds and her many delicacies, especially cookies, pies and futjens.

Adela was preceded in death by her husband, Hugo in 1980, her parents, sister and brother-in-law, Lillian Guda Johannsen Ehler and her husband, John of Ida Grove; step-brother and sister-in-law: Wilbert and Irene Krohnke Johannsen, of Schleswig; Hugo's siblings: Rudolph, Wilhelm, Edward, Bernhard, Frank, Delia and their spouses.

Those who remain to cherish her memory include her daughter, Joyce and much-loved son-in-law, William J. Petersen of Schleswig; three grandchildren: Timothy Hugh Petersen and his wife, Cynthia of Ashburnahm, Massachusetts; Joel William Petersen and his wife, Belinda of McKinney, Texas; and Roxanne Richards and her husband, Albert of Tiburon, California; seven great-grandchildren: Sara, Megan, and Daniel Petersen; Jessie Petersen; William, Lauren, and Jonathan Richards; nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 3:30 p.m., Sunday, September 15, 2002 at United Church of Christ in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Chris Burtnett officiated the services and grave side rites held at Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Organist Wendy Bumann and pianist William Richards provided selections accompaniment for vocalists Sara Petersen, Megan Petersen, Lauren Richards, Barbara Buffum, and Pam Gronau. Those serving as honorary pallbearers were: Jerry Struck, Burdell Jensen, Evelyn Johnson, Darlene Jensen, Barbara Buffum, Dr. K.M. Johannsen, Murlin Johannsen, DeWayne Ehler, John Ehler Jr. Elaine Ehler Sahl, and Irene Ehler Geerdes. Those serving as pallbearers were: Sara Petersen, Megan Petersen, Daniel Petersen, Jessie Petersen, William Richards, Lauren Richards, and Jonathan Richards. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of the arrangements.

Adela Henriette Marie (Thies) Schultz (1905 - 1999)

Adela Henriette Marie Schultz was born June 27, 1905, the daughter of Carl and Alvena Kuhlmann Thies. She died at the Indian Hills Nursing Home in Sioux City, Iowa, Friday, April 30, 1999 at the age of ninety-three.

Adela was born near Charter Oak, Iowa, on the family farm two miles north of Charter Oak. She was baptized in Christ on July 23, 1905 at St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak by Rev. A. Amstein and later confirmed there on June 1, 1919. Adela received her education at a rural school near her home and St. John's Lutheran School. After completing her education, she remained at home to help her parents care for the family.

On February 10, 1929, Adela was united in marriage to Elmer Schultz at St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak by Rev. A. Amstein. The coupled farmed in the Charter Oak area until 1949, when they purchased a farm one and one half miles north of Charter Oak. They lived there until 1983 when they moved to Charter Oak. Elmer died May 17, 1986 and Adela continued to live in Charter Oak, until September of 1994, when she moved to the Odebolt Rehab and Nursing Center in Odebolt.

Adela was a life-long member of St. John Lutheran Church, their Ladies Aid, Lutheran Laymen's League and served as a past officer for the Aid Association for Lutherans. She was also a member of the Charter Oak Clubettes, Friendly Chatter Sewing Club and the Crawford County Hospital Auxiliary. Adela was a very loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother. She loved cooking and working in her vegetable and flower gardens. In her leisure time, Adela enjoyed cross-stitching, crocheting and quilting.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. Survivors include one son, Loren Schultz and his wife, Carol of Denison, one daughter, Nadine Moran and her husband, Stephen of Carrollton, Texas, three grandchildren and four great-grand children; two brothers, Martin Thies and his wife, Juanita of Mapleton; Herbert Thies of Charter Oak; two sisters, Henrietta Schulz of Omaha; Helen Schulz and her husband, Hugo of Charter Oak; one sister-in-law, Rose Schultz of Charter Oak; many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, May 5, 1999 at the St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. L. C. Gebhardt officiated the service and grave side rites held at the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Charter Oak. Art Beeck provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "What a Friend We Have in Jesus", "How Great Thou Art" and "Be Still, My Soul". Pallbearers were: Arlyn Schulz, James Schultz, Alan Schulz, Donald Grap, Lyle Schulz and Jim Schultz. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Agnes (Meeves) Christiansen (1903 - 1999)

Agnes Christiansen was born January 28, 1903, the daughter of Henry and Matilda Ohl Meeves. She died at the Dunlap Care Center in Dunlap, Iowa on Monday, July 5, 1999 at the age of ninety-six.

Agnes was born on a farm north of Dunlap, Iowa and received her education in the Boyer Township School and the Dunlap High School. As a young girl, Agnes helped her family with their farming duties.

On September 14, 1921, Agnes was united in marriage to Herbert Christiansen at the Zion Lutheran Parsonage in Denison, Iowa by Rev. William Frese. Agnes was also confirmed on this date at the Zion Lutheran Church. The couple settled on a farm north of Dunlap in Boyer Township where they farmed, except for three years, when they farmed near Charter Oak. In the early 1970's, they retired and moved to the first senior citizen home in Dow City and spent several winters in Arizona.

Agnes was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Dow City, their Ladies Aid and also the Busy Neighbor's Club. She enjoyed gardening, canning and cooking. Agnes also enjoyed cleaning and was an immaculate house keeper.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Herbert in 1983; one daughter, Barbara; four brothers, Henry, Edward, Charles and Jerry Meeves; and one sister, Marie.

Survivors include one son, Arthur Christiansen of Dow City and his friend, Nadine Boell of Carroll; one daughter, Lorraine Brasel and her husband, Pat of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; eight grandsons; eleven great- grandchildren and one great-greatgrandson; three sisters-in-law, Velma Meeves of Dunlap; Emma Ohl of Denison; Sylvia Christiansen of Sioux City; also many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 1:00 P.M., Thursday, July 8, 1999 at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Dow City, Iowa. Rev. Larry Lemke officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Dunlap, Iowa. Sherry Ketelsen provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Ron Brasel singing "How Great Thou Art" and"Just as I Am, Without One Plea" and congregational hymn "I Know that My Redeemer Lives". Those serving as pallbearers were: Craig Christiansen, Harvey E. Meeves, Robert L. Meeves, Melvin Ronk, John Heller and Ron Brasel. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Alfred August Schultz (1901 - 1978)

Alfred August Schultz was born Dec. 14, 1901 near Schleswig, Iowa, the son of Herman and Bertha Schultz. He died April 5, 1978 at Fort Dodge Hospital at the age of 76.

Alfred received his formal education in the rural and parochial schools in Hanover Township. He was baptized and later confirmed into the Lutheran Faith at St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Hanover Township.

On Feb. 20, 1927, he was united in marriage to Anna Schau at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Together they made their first home on a farm near Ricketts where they continued to live until 1944 when they moved to Charter Oak, where Alfred established his own business. He retired in 1972 and continued to live in Charter Oak.

He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church where he served as an Elder, Bible School Superintendent and as a member of the Finance Board. He served as Mayor of Charter Oak and was a member of the City Council. He was also a member of the Charter Oak Commercial Club, Community Club and Golden Oaks.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters. Survivors include his wife, Anna of Charter Oak; one son Donald of Omaha, Nebr.; one daughter Darlene, Mrs. Paul Clausen of Charter Oak and five grandchildren. Also by two sisters, Mrs. Clara Kuhlmann of Charter Oak and Mrs. Irma Wisneski of Sauk Rapids, Minn.

Funeral services were held April 8, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, Charter Oak. Burial was in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery. The Rev. Henry W. Friedrich officiated at the services. Pallbearers included, Milford Schultz, Lorenz Schultz, Kenneth Schau, Allen Schau, Bob Har-baugh and Beryl Garrett. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Alfred Carstens (1903 - 1995)

Alfred Carstens was born August 14, 1903, the son of William and Dorthea Schiernbeck Carstens. He died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa on Friday, February 10, 1995 at the age of ninety-one years.

Alfred was born on a farm near Schleswig and began his education in a rural school near his home. He completed his education at the Zion Lutheran School in Denison and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Zion Lutheran Church.

After completing his education, Alfred helped his family on the farm until he was united in marriage to Meta Greder at the Zion Lutheran Parsonage in Denison by Rev. William Frese on September 3, 1924. The couple farmed in the Buck Grove area where they were blessed with the birth of two children. Alfred and Meta purchased the farm from her parents in 1944, and remained there until retiring from farming in 1965 when they moved to Denison.

In 1963, Alfred began a career in the insurance industry when he was elected to the board of directors of the Farmers Mutual Insurance Company in Schleswig and remained with the firm until retiring in February of 1983. He enjoyed fishing and was particularly fond of Spring Lake, a lake he developed on his home farm in the mid-fifties. He enjoyed occupying his free time there for many years and in more recent years he continued speaking of his pride and enjoyment of the time he spent at the lake. Alfred was a past member of the Washington Township board of Trustees and a member of the Golden K Kiwanis Club in Denison.

He was a loving husband and a devoted father whose Christian faith is evidenced in the kindness and consideration he had for his family and friends. He was a faithful member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Buck Grove before transferring his membership to the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.

Alfred was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Wilbert, Emil and Irwin who died in infancy.

Survivors include his wife, Meta of Denison; two sons, Lloyd and his wife, Vera of Defiance and Gilbert and his wife, Ruth of Loveland, Colorado; six grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren; two sisters, Hilda Fuller of Manilla and Irma Bromert and her husband, Herb of Manning and one sister-in-law, Irene Carstens of Watertown, South Dakota.


Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, February 13 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison with Pastor Kurt Kaiser and Pastor Philip Block officiating. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for vocalist Larry Boeck, who sang "Nearer My God to Thee" and the congregational hymns "How Great Thou Art" and "I Know That My Redeemer Lives." Casketbearers were the six grandchildren: Gary Carstens, Ross Carstens, Dale Carstens, Gordon Carstens, Don Carstens, and Sandra Carstens. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Alfred Carl Hagemann (1908 - 2006)

Alfred Carl Hagemann was born November 28, 1908, the son of Carl and Johanna Bohlmann Hagemann. He died Saturday, March 25, 2006 at the Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of ninety-seven.

Alfred was born on a farm near Ricketts and was baptized in Christ as an infant at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hanover Township, Charter Oak and later confirmed there. He received his education at St. Paul's Lutheran School, Hanover Township, Charter Oak.

On February 14, 1937, Alfred was united in marriage to Emgard Timm. They made their home on a farm in Crawford County, where they farmed until moving to Ricketts. While living in Ricketts, Alfred had a trucking business and a portable grinder. Subsequently returning to farming, until the couple retired and made their home in Charter Oak, where Alfred did painting and yard work. In November of 2005 they made their home at the Denison Care Center.

He was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather. Alfred loved his pets and in his leisure time, he enjoyed fishing. He was a life long member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hanover Township, Charter Oak.

Alfred was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Arnold, Harry and Paul Hagemann.

Survivors include his wife, Emgard of Denison; one daughter, Marlene O'Meara and her husband, Herb of Denison; one son, Allan Hagemann and his wife, Tammy of Wakefield, Nebraska; five grandchildren, Mark O'Meara and his wife, Lori of West Des Moines; Tami O'Meara of Glidden; Jeff Hagemann of Omaha, Nebraska; Nikki Hagemann of Detroit, Michigan; and Dawn Hagemann of Denison; five greatgrandchildren and one great-greatgrandchild; two sisters, Frieda Jeschke; and Elsie Norman, both of Denison; daughter-in-law, Dixie Hagemann of Denison; one sister-in-law, Jane Hagemann of Ricketts; and one brother-in-law, Ernie Plough of Denison; many other relatives and friends.


Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 29, 2006 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hanover Township, Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. Eugene Ernst officiated the service and grave side rites held at the St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery. Shirley Stull provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound", The Old Rugged Cross" and "Just as I Am, Without One Plea". Honorary Pallbearers were: Nikki Hagemann, Dawn Hagemann, Jeff Hagemann, Tami O'Meara and Mark O'Meara. Those serving as pallbearers were: Randy Bohlmann, Gailen Meseck, Richard Spiegel, Mark Spiegel, Randy Plough and Earl Staley. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak was in charge of arrangements.

Alfred Peter Sievertsen (1900 - 1996)

Alfred Peter Sievertsen was born January 17, 1900, the son of Peter and Sophia Jensen Sievertsen. He died Sunday, February 11, 1996 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison at the age of ninety-six.

Alfred was born in Manning, Iowa and received his education in Manning, Dedham, Milford and St. James, Minnesota, where he lived with his family. In 1914, his family returned to Denison and Al continued his education at the Denison Community School.

In 1925, Al was united in marriage to Leota Hendricksen. The couple settled on a farm south of Denison and were blessed with the birth of two children. Leota passed away in 1931 and Al continued to care for their children and farm until retiring to Denison in 1948. Al was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Denison and was a resident of Eventide since 1964. He enjoyed walking and would often walk five or six miles in the country.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Leota; six brothers and one sister.

Survivors include one daughter, Lois Bliesman and her husband, Lee of Denison; one son, Dale Sievertsen and his wife, Georgine of Omaha; one grandson, Tedd Bliesman and his wife, Nancy of Denison; one granddaughter, Rebecca Lavelle and her husband Larry of Omaha; Nebraska; four greatgrandchildren, Ann Thomas and her husband, John of Cedar Falls, IA; Chris Bliesman and his wife, Julie of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Anne Lavelle and Pat Lavelle, both of Omaha, and two great great-grandchildren, Zachary and Jordan Bliesman of Colorado Springs; also four nieces.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, February 13, 1996 at the Oakland Chapel in Denison, Iowa with Dr. Edward Peterson officiating the service and graveside rites held at the Oakland Cemetery. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Alfrieda Maria Ida Woest (1903 - 1954)

Manilla - Alfrieda Maria Ida Woest, the daughter of John Woest and his wife Anna Hollander, was born June 20, 1903 in Hayes township, Crawford county and died on June 8 (1954) at Crawford County Memorial hospital at the age of 50 years.

She lived with her parents on a farm in Hayes township until the year 1912 when they moved to the town of Aspinwall. In the year 1930, she and her parents moved to Manilla.

When her father and mother died, she began working for Mr. and Mrs. Jim McCracken. Since the year 1934 she had been in that home, first caring for Mrs. McCracken, and then caring for Mr. McCracken after the death of his wife.

On June 12, 1935, she was confirmed in Trinity Lutheran church by the Rev. F. C. Israel. She remained a member of her church until her death. Frieda was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Priscilla Guild for nearly 20 years and was also a member of the American Legion auxiliary.

In January of this year she went to Iowa City for observation and treatment. While in Iowa City she underwent surgery. After some time she returned home again and seemed to show some improvement. She returned again to Iowa City for a check-up and after a few days returned to her home. However her health did not improve and on May 23 she was taken to the Memorial hospital in Denison. After being there for a few days, she went to the home of her half-brother, Otto Schmielau. She remained there for a few days and then returned to the hospital. From that time on her condition continued to grow more serious until she died Tuesday morning.

Survivors are a brother, Hugo of Rock Island, Ill., two half-brothers, Otto and John, of Manilla; two half sisters, Laura of Milwaukee and Emma of Rock Island, Ill. Two half-sisters, Katie and Annie, preceded her in death.

The minister was Rev. L. W. Nutzmann. Burial was in Iowa Township cemetery.

Alice Lizzie Marie (Jepsen) Jensen (1909 - 2003)

Alice Lizzie Marie Jepsen the daughter of J. Peter and Lizzie (Naeve) Jepsen was born on July 16, 1909 in Schleswig, Iowa. She passed away Monday, May 12 at Avera Holy Family Hospital in Estherville, Iowa at the age of 93 years. She received her education in the rural school system in Schleswig.

On December 16, 1930, Alice was united in marriage to Harvey J. Jensen in Frieden's Evangelical Church in Schleswig. The couple made their home in Estherville. Alice was employed by Balmer Nursing Home, Gardston Hotel and Lyon's Bakery. Alice was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Estherville. For hobbies, she enjoyed crocheting and making quilts.

She is survived by her children, Norma Williams of Nazareth, Pennsylvania; Glen Jensen and his wife, Bernice of Estherville; Mary Lou Spoo and her husband, Donald of Estherville; Walter Jensen and his wife, Lois of Estherville; Linda Lindquist and her husband, Jon of Lafayette, Minnesota; Elaine Jensen of Estherville; Alice Jensen of Estherville and Janice Button and her husband, Donald of Estherville; 18 grandchildren, 6 step-grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

She has been preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Jensen on December 7, 1974; son-in-law Donald Williams on November 21, 1996, and one great-grandchild.

Funeral service was held at First Presbyterian Church, Estherville, Iowa on Thursday, May 15, 2003. Reverend Mark Gabbard officiated. Music selections included congregational hymns "Rock of Ages", "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Amazing Grace". Janet Murphy served as organist. Honorary casketbearers were Dale Williams, Donald Williams Jr., Eugene Jensen, Dion Spoo, Kenny Jensen, and Devin Spoo. Active casketbearers were Jerry Jensen, David Spoo, Wayne Williams, Jim Jensen, Karl Lindquist. and Dennis Spoo. Interment was held at East Side Cemetery, Estherville, Iowa. Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Bayard Johnson (1909 - 2000)

Bayard Johnson was born at Orsjo, SmaLand, Sweden, May 26, 1909, the son of Karl and Emelia Johansson Johnson. His early life was spent in Sweden where he received most of his formal education, spending his spare time swimming in the lake and going to the woods to pick berries for his mother.

In September of 1923, at the age of 14, Bayard began his journey to the United States, being sponsored by Swan and Selma Johnson. Boarding the train at Orsiahe said good-bye to his parents, never to see them again. He traveled by train to Gothenberg, Sweden, where he boarded the ship for New York, an eight day journey. Arriving in the United States as a minor, he spent six days at Ellis Island before boarding the train for Odebolt, Iowa where his two brothers met him.

He attended one semester of school at Wheeler Township Number 8 where he learned the English language, and was known to read the dictionary rather than go out and play. After his schooling his first jobs were working the wheat fields across the Mid-West. On October 1, 1928 he became a United States Citizen at Sioux City, Iowa.

On December 18, 1935, Bayard was united in marriage with Lillie Schultz at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Their union was blessed with four children, Kenneth, Beverly, Sharon and Karin. They farmed in the Battle Creek and Schleswig areas before purchasing their farm north of Kiron in 1949. Bayard devoted his life to farming and was the first farmer in Sac County to implement terracing. In 1979, Bayard and Lillie retired and moved to Kiron.

Their retirement years were spent at Kiron where Bayard enjoyed bike riding, camping and fishing. He was an active member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Kiron having served on their board, was an usher for many years and a member of the men's club, Lutheran Brotherhood. In January of 1997, due to failing health, Bayard and Lillie moved to the Assisted Living Unit at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison.

Lillie died January 3, 1999 and Bayard continued to reside at Eventide where his death occurred Thursday evening, August 3, 2000. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 91 years, 2 months and 7 days.

Including his parents and his wife, Bayard was preceded in death by one sister, Karin and four brothers, Gunnar, Herman, Harry and Herbert Johnson.

Those who remain to cherish his memory include his four children, Kenneth Johnson of Lake City, Florida, Beverly and husband, Larry Jaksoniak of Littleton, Colorado, Sharon and husband, Lyle Marquardt of Denison, Iowa and Karen and husband, Ed Wilkinson of Shelby, Montana, six grandchildren, David Johnson of Lake City, Florida, Lynnea Solomon of Littleton, Colorado, Lawrence Jaksoniak of Littleton, Colorado, Toni Marquardt of Denison, Iowa, Paula Hoffman of Fayetteville, North Carolina and Melissa Jones of Missoula, Montana, 3 great grandchildren, one sister-in-law, Leona and husband, Ted Aldag of Schleswig, Iowa, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., Monday, August 7, 2000, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Kiron, Iowa with the Rev. Victor N. Johnson officiating. Music for the service included Jerry Peterman singing "Old Rugged Cross" and "Amazing Grace" and the congregation singing, "Children Of The Heavenly Father" and "How Great Thou Art". Margaret Ann Buller served as organist. Casket bearers included Brad Lundell, Tim Lundell, John Lantz, Roy Johnson, Roger Hunt and Ervin Neddermeyer. Interment was at Bethel Lutheran Cemetery at Kiron, Iowa. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Bernhard E. Saggau (1902 - 1992)

Bernhard E. Saggau was born the son of Martin and Caroline Jepsen Saggau on September 28, 1902. He died Wednesday, March 25, 1992 at the Iowa Methodist Hospital at Des Moines, Iowa at the age of 89 years.

Bernie was born in Denison where he grew up and received his education in the Denison Community Schools and graduating from the Denison Community High School with the class of 1924. While in high school, Bernie was active in many athletic sports, but excelled in football. In 1924, he was honored for his excellence in football as evidenced in having been selected as a member of the all state football team.

After graduation, he was employed at Denison Auto for a few years, also running the gas wagon before subsequently purchasing the bulk plant he operated for nearly forty years before retiring.

On April 14, 1925, Bernie was united in marriage to Angie Satterlee by Rev. Wm. Frese at the Zion Lutheran Parsonage in Denison. The couple remained in Denison and were blessed with the birth of three children.

Bernie was particularly proud of his active membership in the volunteer fire department in Denison and was a member of their softball team and was involved with many fund raising events in the department for community affairs. Through the years, Bernie enjoyed sports of all kinds, but remained active in fishing and hunting and always anticipated the routine hunting trips he made with his son. In recent years, he occupied his free time gardening and caring for the quail he raised at his home.

In 1987, Bernie and Angie were blessed with the privilege of having celebrated their sixty-second wedding anniversary together before her death in 1988. Others preceding him in death are his parents; one grandson; two brothers and five sisters.

Survivors include one son, Bernie Saggau Jr. and his wife, Lois of Boone, Iowa; and two daughters, Norma Jean and her husband Dr. Wayne Schultz of El Dorado, Arkansas and Lydia Ann and her husband Dr. John Goode of Rancho Palos Verdes, California; nine granchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 28, 1992, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa with Rev. Kurt Kaiser officiating the service and grave side rites held at the Oakland Cemetery in Denison, Iowa. Karen Kahl provided the organ" accompaniment for soloist Henry Henningsen singing "Take My Hand, Precious Lord" and congregation singing "Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me" and "Just As I Am, Without One Plea". Honorary Pallbearers were Robert Goode and Tom Goode. Pallbearers were Michael Bitsche, Eric Schmidt, David Saggau, Ray Bitsche, Earl Schmidt and Rick Mellon. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Walter A. Huebner and Sons' Huebner Funeral Home in Denison.

Bernice (Eyer) Grell (1905 - 1992)

Bernice Grell was bom on Dec. 16, 1905, the daughter of John and Mary Squibbs Eyer. She died on Friday, Sept. 18, 1992 at the Eventide Nursing Home in Denison at the age of 86 years. Bernice was born on a farm near Charter Oak where she grew up and received her education in a rural school near her home.

On June 27, 1928, Bernice was united in marriage to Edlef Grell at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Soldier Township, Crawford County, Iowa. The couple settled on a farm near Ricketts where they farmed for many years in addition to operating Grells Store in Ricketts. She was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Ricketts. In her free time she enjoyed tatting and caring for her plants and also enjoyed the peacefulness of birds. She worked for many years part time for Whips Lanes in Ricketts.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Ed on Feb. 5, 1972; three brothers, Claude, Sam, Leslie; five sisters, Jessie, Maud, Mary, Hazel and Tracey. Bernice is survived by many relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, 1992 at the St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Ricketts with Pastor Robert Hines officiating the service and graveside rites held in the Garden of Gethsemane at the Crawford County Memory Gardens in Denison. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for soloist Henry Henningsen singing "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and congregational hymns, "I Fall Asleep in Jesus' Wounds" and "I'm But a Stranger Here." Pallbearers were Chris Hennings, Verdeen Hennings, Earl Hennings, Gordon Moeller, Paul Briggle and Alvin Eyer. The Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak was in charge of arrangements.

Bernice Hannah Etta Stegemann (1909 - 1976)

Bernice Hannah Etta Stegemann, daughter of Frank and Augusta Stegemann nee Mohr, was born in Otter Creek Township, Crawford County, Iowa July 17, 1909. She attended the country school that was located a mile east of Schleswig, Iowa.

Bernice Stegemann was confirmed in and a member of the Schleswig United Church of Christ. She grew up and spent her time caring for her parents until they both passed away. She then worked for Kloewer Brothers for ten years, for the Ben Stegemann family, and several other families as the housekeeper and nurse. She then moved to Denison, Iowa to help her sister in the operation of the Highway Cafe, until it closed. Bernice and her sister then moved to the Meyers Trailer Court to make their home.

Bernice entered the Crawford County Memorial Hospital. on Friday, April 30, and passed away on May 4, 1976.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother Frank Jr., one sister Amanda, and one nephew, Clarence Weise.

Bernice is survived by her sister Geneva Andresen of Denison, a sister-in-law, Mrs. Edna Stegemann, Schleswig, two nephews, Burdell Andresen of Waverly, Iowa and Dwight Andresen of Eagle Point, Oregon, one niece Dorothy, Mrs. Ronald Schneller of Camanche, Iowa, other relatives and many friends.

Her memorial service was held in the Schleswig United Church of Christ May 7, 1976. The committal service was in Morgan Cemetery. Officiating was Pastor Fred Moore. Music was provided by Evelyn Johnson, Jeanette Grell and Malinda Evers. Hymns of praise were "A Closer Walk With Thee" and "The Old Rugged Cross". Pallbearers were Harvey Ehlers, John Meyers D.C., Albert Mohr, Ervin Mohr, Harvey Mohr and Robert Paup.

Bernice M. (Doakes) Quandt (1906 - 1988)

Bernice M. Quandt, the daughter of William and Bessie Lee Nichols Doakes, was born on July 10, 1906 at Newport, Indiana. She died on December 14, 1988 at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison at the age of 82 years.

Bernice attended school in Newport, before moving to Mitchell, South Dakota where she resided for a few years. She came to Iowa in 1919 where she was employed as a housekeeper in various homes where help was needed.

On February 26, 1928, Bernice and Elmer Quandt of Hinton, Iowa were united in marriage at the Lutheran Parsonage in Denison. This union was blessed with three children. They made their home in Hinton before moving to a farm near Kenwood, Iowa in 1932. They moved to Charter Oak in 1939. Elmer died on July 13,1973 and Bernice continued to make her home in Charter Oak until August 11, 1987 when she moved to the Eventide Lutheran Home due to failing health.

She worked as a cook in the Charter Oak Community School for a number of years in the 1960's. She enjoyed the outside. She was Baptized on April 29, 1916 and later Confirmed on April 14, 1935. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison at the time of her death.

Preceding Bernice in death were: her husband Elmer; her parents and a step father, Henry Keincke.

Survivors include her children: Mary Lou and her husband Irwin Denker of Denison, Donald E. Quandt of Bremerton, Washington and Bonnie Jean Johannsen of Deloit. Also surviving are 5 grandchildren; Cynthia and her husband Jeff Eby of Adel, Iowa; Sandra Denker of Urbandale, Iowa; Jefiery Johannsen and his wife Janet of Schaller, Iowa; Jenelle Johannsen of Deloit, Iowa and Joel Johannsen and his wife Melissa of Storm Lake, Iowa: 4 great-grandchildren; one brother Raymond Reinke and his wife Selma of Buena Park, California; 6 sisters: Marian Kluver of Charter Oak, Gladys Smart of Cold Water, Ohio, Dorothy Fredericks of Denison, Esther and her husband Merrill Meseck of Charter Oak; Frances and her husband Roy Wiegel of Charter Oak and Leanna and her husband Ed Crowder of Mounment, Colorado.

Bertha Elizabeth (Kessel) Campbell (1904 - 2006)

Bertha Elizabeth Campbell was born August 14, 1904, to Charles and Ellen Taylor Kessel. She died January 3, 2006 at the Manilla Manor in Manilla, Iowa at the age of 101, 4 months, and 21 days.

Bertha was born in Romley, West Virginia and moved to Iowa with her family. Later, her family decided to return to West Virginia, but Bertha, two of her sisters, and two of her brothers decided to stay in Iowa.

Bertha married Sabine Campbell on August 21, 1926, in Kiron, Iowa. They lived all their married life in Deloit, except for one year. The couple were blessed with the birth of eight children.

She was a loving mother and grandmother who enjoyed planting a , large garden every year and canning for her family. Bertna always had a flower garden and enjoyed mowing her own yard until she was in her late nineties. She also loved to go fishing and make rugs out of bread wrappers. She loved dogs and had a favorite dog named Lucy, which she dearly loved.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, three sisters, two, sons, her husband in 1956, her daughter at age five, three grandsons, one granddaughter, one great-grandson, two great-great-granddaughters, and one great-great grandson.

Survivors include four daughters: Lois Hale of Humbolt, Iowa; Viola Brown and her husband, Don of Deloit; Alice Parsley of California; and Catherine Anderson and her husband, Richard of Denison; one son, Leslie and his wife, Deanna of Dow City; twenty-seven grandchildren, sixty great-grandchildren; twenty great-great-grandchildren; two sisters: Alma Corbin and Helen Nicholson, both of Romley, West Virginia; and one daughter-in-law, Ina Knop of Denison, many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, January 6, 2006 at the First United Methodist Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Judy Deweber officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Deloit Cemetery in Deloit. Organist Nancy Miles provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns, "The Old Rugged Cross", "Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound" and "Because He Lives". Those serving as pallbearers were: Kenneth Hutchinson, Rodney Hutchinson, Leonard Campbell, Nathan Campbell, Donald Brown Jr., Trent Campbell, Russel Pinyan, Ronald Pinyan and Rick Campbell. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the United Methodist Women. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Bertha (Hansohn) Stone (1901 - 1992)

Bertha Hansohn Stone, 91, of 2610 30th St. S.W., died Wednesday (sometime in 1992) at St. Luke's Hospital following a long illness. Services were held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church with burial in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.

Bertha was born Jan. 28, 1901 in Denison, Ia. and had been employed at Killian's Department Store for 25 years, prior to her retirement in 1972. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the Killian's Retirees Club.

Surviving are four daughters, LaVerna Hanson and Leatrice Bean, Both of Cedar Rapids, Lorraine McQueen of Fresco, Calif., and Lois DeVoss of Dodgeville, Wis.; 17 grandchildren and many great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, L.O. Stone in 1965. Also surviving are two son-in-laws, Darrell Hanson and Clyde Bean.

Rev. Wayne C. Schroeder of Trinity Lutheran Church officiated at the service. Contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church.

Bessie (Creese) Wilken (1902 - 1974)

Mrs. Carl Wilken, 71, Denison, died January 11, 1974, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital. Services were held at 11 a.m. January 15, 1974, at the Zion Lutheran Church, Denison, with the Rev. Robert Maschke officiating. Burial was in Morgan Township Cemetery at Schleswig.

Mrs. Wilken, the former Bessie Creese, was born October 9, 1902, in Crawford County. She was married July 21, 1920, to Hans Hendrichsen at Charter Oak. They farmed until 1945 when they moved to Denison. They owned and operated the lunchroom at the Denison Sales Barn for many years.

Mr. Hendrichsen died ]uly 13, 1952. She married Mr. Wilken June 13, 1954.

Survivors include the widower; two sons, Ralph Hendrichsen of Waukegan, Illinois and Kenneth Hendrichsen of Albambra, California; a stepson, Vernie Wilken of Denison; three stepdaughters, Mrs. Carl (Florence) Kyle of Sioux City, Mrs. Irene Broom of Omaha and Mrs. Jack (Lou) Wabschall of North Canton, Ohio; three brothers, Raymond and Clifford, both of Charter Oak, and William of Lake Havasu., Arizona; 22 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren.

B. Faye (Waggoner) Anderson (1900 - 1993)

B. Faye Anderson, 93, of Arthur died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1993, at the Morningside Care Center in Ida Grove. Services were held Saturday at the Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Odebolt with the Rev. W. Michael Biklen, of the, Arthur United Methodist Church officiating. Burial was in the Odebolt Cemetery.

Mrs. Anderson was born Oct. 10, 1900, in Odebolt, the daughter of Albert and Jessie (Gunn) Waggoner.

She married Levi A. Anderson on November 28, 1923, in Odebolt. She taught country school in the Kiron and Schleswig areas, and also did babysitting and sewing. The couple lived in Kiron until 1947 when they moved to Schleswig. He preceded her in death. She moved to Arthur in 1980 and entered the care center in 1986.

Mrs. Anderson was a member of the Arthur United Methodist Church, Kiron American Legion Auxiliary, and the Rural Letter Carriers Auxiliary.

Survivors include a son, Duane "Andy" Anderson of Ames; a daughter, Norma Schwarz of Dunlap; 20 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Lea and his wife, Vivian Waggoner of Arthur.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Levi, one son, Ronald; a great-grandson, Joshua Blask; an infant sister, Helen; three sisters, Ruby Nelson, Lettie Smith and Alice Boerner; and two brothers, Charlie and Russell Waggoner.

Blanche (Krohnke) Firnhaber (1901 - 1996)

Blanche K. Firnhaber, age 94, of Boone, Iowa, and formerly of Schleswig, died at the Evangelical Free Church Home in Boone on Monday, January 22, 1996, due to heart failure.

Services were held 10:30 Wednesday at the Stark-Welin Chapel in Boone with Revs. Michael Bremer and David Farmer officiating. Burial was in the Squire Boone Cemetery, south of Boone.

Blanche was born October 6, 1901, in Schleswig, Iowa, the daughter of Herman and Mamie (Voss) Krohnke.

On February 1, 1922, she married Victor K. Firnhaber at Schleswig, Iowa. Mr. Firnhaber died in 1971. She was a homemaker. She had been a resident of the Evangelical Free Church Home since December of 1993. She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Boone.

Survivors include one daughter, Arlea Johnson of Boone, Iowa; three sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Pat Firnhaber and Robert and Bertha Firnhaber, both of Boone and Lowell Firnhaber of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; 12 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one step-great-grandson; one great-great-grandson; and one sister, Hazel Koepke of Fairfield, California.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one daughter, Phyllis Ante in July 1987 and one step-great-grandson.

Byron J. Moeller (1912 - 1987)

Byron J. Moeller, 76, Loveland, Colo., died Sept. 10 at his home.

He was born Nov. 17, 1912, in Crawford County, Kiron, Ia., to William H. Moeller and Minnie Kastner Moeller.

He married Lena Wellendorf on Dec. 21, 1934, in Schleswig, Ia. He moved to Loveland 26 years ago from Ida Grove, Ia.

He farmed in Iowa and owned a Coast to Coast Store in Ida Grove. He was also a heavy equipment operator in Iowa and in Loveland. He then became superintendent of Best Way Paving in Greeley, before retiring in 1976. He also operated a car wash for many years.

He was chairman of Tri-County Area March of Dimes in Ida Grove, Mason Lodge Kane No. 377 A.F. & A.M., Ida Grove, and with the Masonic organization a member of the Knights of Templer, Scottish Rites, Shriners, and also with the Rebekahs and Past Patron of the Order of Eastern Star. He was a member of the Loveland Lodge No. 36 I.O.O.F. Odd Fellows, Past Trustee of the Moose Lodge, member and past president of both the Good Sams and Airstreamers and a Red Cross First Aid instructor for 20 years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Loveland.

He is survived by his wife, Lena Moeller, Loveland; sons, William L. Moeller and Wayne L. Moeller and wife, Margery of Loveland, and James B. Moeller and wife, Ann of White Sands, N.M.; a daughter, Jane A. Burns and husband, William of Adrian, Mich.; grandchildren, Michael, Jill and Jena Pullem, Christina and William Moeller and Kelley and Timothy Moeller. He was preceded in death by brothers, Carl and Alvin.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church. The Reverend Anthony Ashworth and the Reverend Ted Nutting officiated. Burial was in Loveland Burial Park with Masonic Graveside Services. Allnutt Funeral Service-Hunter Chapel was in charge of services and arrangements.

Carl B. Holtman (1908 - 1984)

Carl B. Holtman was born on Oct. 8,1908 at Fairfield, S. D., the son of Chris and Regina Schultz Holtman. He died April 2, 1984, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison at the age of 75.

At an early age, Carl moved with his family to Twin Valley, Minn. It was there that he received his formal education in the rural schools near his home. He was baptized as an infant and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith. After the completion of his education he later moved to Crawford County, Iowa where he was employed by several farmers in the area.

On Jan. 8, 1939, Carl was united in marriage to Adela Zage at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Together they made their home on a farm near Schleswig for 17 years. In 1955 they moved into Denison. Until his retirement in 1979, Carl worked as a carpenter.

Carl was a voting member of Zion Lutheran Church. During the years he lived on the farm he was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. He also was a member of the Golden K Kiwanis.

In addition to his parents, Carl was preceded in death by five brothers.

Suriviors include, his wife Adela of Denison, two daughters, Dorothy, Mrs. Delaine Listamann and Beverly, Mrs. Kenneth Nelson Jr., both of Denison and four grandchildren, Debra Listamann, David Nelson, Nelaine Nelson, and Darla Nelson. Also surviving are two sisters, Martha McLees of Genoa, Wis. and Marie Gunderson of Virginia, Minn., three sisters in law, Mrs. Goldie Holtman of Twin Valley, Minn., Mrs. Agnes Holtman of East Grand Forks, Minn., and Mrs. Lucille Holtman of Virginia, Minn as well as other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held April 16, at 2:00 p.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Burial was in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens. The Rev. Jack D. Heck officiated at the services. Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist with Henry Henningsen as soloist. Hymns included, How Great Thou Art, The Old Rugged Cross and I'm But A Stranger Here. Pallbearers were Dwight Kepford, Harvey Neumann, Merlin Schroeder, Earl Keim, Harry Schwans and Fred Carstensen. Honorary Bearers were Bill Jeschke, Harry Kohles, Bryce Tucker, Wilfred Fishcer, Henry Olderog, Ford Hawley, Frank Schmitz and J. Henry Schroeder. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Carl A. Schreiber (1900 - 1997)

Carl A. Schreiber was born July 9, 1900, the son of Karl and Augusta Dumke Schreiber. He died at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Wednesday, February 19, 1997, at the age of ninety-six.

Carl was born in Chicago, Illinois and soon after his birth moved with his parents to Charter Oak. He was baptized in Christ July 15, 1900 in Chicago, Illinois and later confirmed March 28, 1915 at St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak.

He received his education at St. John's Lutheran School in Charter Oak. In 1921, Carl opened the Schreiber Implement Company in Ricketts and operated it until 1935.

On January 24, 1929, Carl was united in marriage to Elsie Schwarz at the home of Rev. Ott in Morningside, Iowa. The couple made their home in Ricketts until 1935, when they moved to a farm north of Ricketts. Retiring in 1961 they returned to Ricketts to make their home.

Carl was a devoted member of St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak and was very faithful to his country. He was a very loving and caring father who in his leisure time enjoyed fishing and attending farm sales.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie in 1985, his parents, two brothers and seven sisters.

Survivors include three sons, Carl Schreiber Jr. of Algona, Iowa, Edwin Schreiber and his wife, Don's of Reno, Nevada; Robert Schreiber and his wife, Lana of Ricketts; six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; and one brother, Herman Schreiber of San Diego, California.

Funeral services were held at 10 A.M., Saturday, February 22, 1997 at the St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. L.C. Gebhardt and Vicar Jon Winterfeldt officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Soldier Township, Charter Oak. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Henry Henningsen singing "The Lord's Prayer" and "Abide With Me" and congregational hymn "I Know that My Redeemer Lives". Those serving as pallbearers were: Carl Schreiber Jr., Randall Schreiber, Robert Schreiber, Denise Schreiber, Edwin Schreiber, Mark Schreiber and Michael Lee. The Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak was in charge of arrangements.

Carl D. Lehman (1900 - 1980)

Carl D. Lehman was born on May 12, 1900, at Denison, Ia., the son of Ernest and Amelia Burmeister Lehman. He died Sept. 28, 1980 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison at the age of 80.

Carl was raised in Denison. He received his formal education in the Zion Lutheran School at Denison. He was baptized as an infant and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Zion Lutheran Church.

On June 17, 1922, Carl was united in marriage to Laura Ebsen at Denison. They made their first home in Nebraska. After returning to Iowa they made their home near Odebolt, later returning to the Denison area where Carl worked on a farm south of Denison. Carl was later employed with the City of Denison in the maintenance department for a number of years before his retirement in 1959.

In addition to his parents, Carl was preceded in death by his wife in April of 1970 and one brother in infancy.

Survivors include one brother, Ernest of Mapleton, two sisters Mrs. Helen Woebke of Denison and Mrs. Frieda Behm of Florida and by a number of nieces; nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Oct. 1 at 10:30 a.m. at the Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak. Burial was in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery near Charter Oak. Vicar Stephen Vogt of St. John's Lutheran Church, Charter Oak, officiated at the services. Pallbearers included Wilbert Groth, Marvin Zage, Marvin Woebke, Malvin Ladwig, Walter Woebke and John Poggensee. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Carl E. Brandenburg (1906 - 1999)

Carl E. Brandenburg was born November 15,1906, the son of Fred and LouiseTimm Brandenburg. He died at the Manilla Manor in Manilla, Iowa, Wednesday, May 19, 1999 at the age of ninety-two.

Carl was born near Charter Oak, Iowa and was baptized in Christ on December 2, 1906 at the St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak and later confirmed there on April 11, 1920. He received his education in a rural, school near his home.

On February 21, 1928, Carl was united in marriage to Hertha F. Kuhlmann in Charter Oak, Iowa and made their home in Turin, Iowa. The couple were blessed with seventy-one years of marriage.

Carl was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Dow City. He was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed spending time with his family. He also enjoyed fishing, playing cards and traveling.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three sons, Donald, Ronald and Robert, two sisters, Adela and Welhamina and two brothers, Fred and Henry.

Survivors include his wife, Hertha of Manilla; four sons, Kenneth Brandenburg of Miami, Florida; Eugene Brandenburg and his wife, Judy of Manilla; Delbert Brandenburg and his wife, Linda of Hillsboro, Ohio; David Brandenburg and his wife, Marilyn of Dallas, Texas; one daughter-in-law, Ida Mae Fake and her husband, Dr. Thomas Fake of Denison; fifteen grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren; four sisters, Louise Scherff of Denison; Marie Bastmann of Worthington, Minnesota; Esther Christiansen and her husband, Earl of Denison, Frieda Selva and her husband, Anthony of Vallejo, California ; one brother, John Brandenburg and his wife, Shirley of Yucaipa, California, many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, May 22, 1999 at the Bethlehem Lutherarn Church in Dow City, Iowa. Rev. Larry Lemke officiated the service and the grave side rites held at the Westside Cemetery. Sherry Ketelsen provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "Who Knows when Death May Overtake Me", "I Fall Asleep in Jesus' Wounds" and "Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound". Pallbearers were: Randy Brandenburg, Josh Brandenburg, Donald Pedersen, Ronald Lohrmann, Wayne Kuhlman, Marvin Vennink, Darrell Kuhlman, Lance Hanson, Delmer Clausen and Chris McKinj; Honorary Pallbearers were: Jeram Brandenburg, Dr. Stephen Brandenburg, John Jensen, Freddie Brandenburg, Virgil Hast, Beryl Garrett and Pete Reitz. Carl G. Korner (1904 - 2002)

Carl G. Korner was born January 29, 1904, the son of Herman and Louise Miller Korner. He died Sunday, December 29, 2002 at the Denison Care Center in Denison, Iowa at the age of ninety-eight.

Carl was born on a farm near Schleswig, Iowa and was baptized in Christ on April 17, 1904. He received his education in a rural school near Schleswig and also the Schleswig High School. After completing his education, Carl farmed in the region and worked for other area farmers.

On January 4, 1922, Carl was united in marriage to Marie Stodden in Denison. The couple made their home on a farm near Battle Creek. In 1934, they purchased a farm west of Ricketts, retiring in 1964 and moving to Charter Oak. Marie died in 1982 and Carl continued to live in Charter Oak until moving to Denison in 1992 to live with his daughter. Due to failing health, Carl entered the Denison Care Center this last May.

Carl enjoyed working with wood and carpentry around his farm. He occupied his leisure time with a myriad of things, but was not one to sit still, he enjoyed work.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, five brothers, Arthur, Harry, Walter, Leo and Bernhard Korner, and two sisters, Esther and one in infancy.

Survivors include one daughter, Elvira Riessen of Denison; one granddaughter, Lois Johnson and her husband, Alan of Buck Grove; two great-grandchildren, Mark Johnson of Des Moines and Michelle Means and her husband, Lance of Ida Grove; and one great-great-grandson, Dominique.

Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m., Thursday, January 2, 2003, at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Rev. David Loeschen officiated the services and grave side rites held at St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery in Charter Oak, Iowa. Art Beeck served as organist and soloist, singing "Beyond the Sunset", and "Rock of Ages". Those serving as pallbearers were: Mark Johnson, Wayne Korner, Marc Meyer, Lodean Korner, Lance Means, and Art Beeck. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Carl William Schmidt (1905 - 1986)

Carl William Schmidt, the son of William and Katherine Reith Schmidt, was born on Dec. 29, 1905 near Blackburn, Mo. He was baptized in infancy and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Winfield, Kan.

In 1909 Carl moved with his family to Nashville, Kan. Here he attended the parochial and public schools. He moved with his family to Winfield, Kan., in 1920 where he was confirmed in Baden Memorial Lutheran Church in 1920. He attended St. John's Academy and later St. John's College in Winfield, graduating in 1926. Later that same year he enrolled as a student at Concordia Seminary at St. Louis, Mo. Following graduation from the seminar in 1929 he was assigned to Peace Lutheran Church at Kinsley, Kan.

On July 31, 1929 Carl was united in marriage to Ernestine Sieckmann at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in St. Louis, Mo. To this union two daughters Irene and Barbara Ann were born.

In 1932 Pastor Schmidt accepted a call to Trinity Lutheran Church at Ida Grove where he served for five years. In 1937 he accepted a call to Zion Lutheran Church in Denison where he served as full-time pastor until 1972 when he became part-time pastor of the congregation. Since 1975 he served as chaplain of the Eventide Lutheran Home for the Aged in Denison.

Pastor Schmidt died Friday afternoon, May 16, 1986 at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison at the age of 80 years, four months, and 17 days.

Pastor Schmidt was active in civic affairs, serving on the Carnegie Library Board for over thirty years and also served nearly thirty years in the Kiwanis club of Denison. He was a member of the Golden "K" Club for a number of years.

During his ministry at Zion the present educational wing was built adjoining the church. He was also very active in the effort to build the Eventide Lutheran Home and was instrumental in organizing the daughter congregation at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Denison. He was also involved in the planning and development of the construction of the present Crawford County Memorial Hospital.

In addition to his parents, Pastor Schmidt was preceded in death by three brothers William, Richard, and Alvin, one sister Velma, and one granddaughter Rebecca Sue Petersen.

Surviving his death are his widow Ernestine, two daughters, Irene, Mrs. Dale Kruthoff of Arion, and Barbara Ann, Mrs. Earl Petersen of Lake Park, Minn. He is further survived by eleven grandchildren, one great grandson, three brothers, Herbert of Denver, Colo., Edward of Mattoon, Ill., and Earnest of Goodland, Kan., and one sister Mrs. Clara Savage of Corvallis, Ore., as well other realtives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Monday, May 19, at 2:00 p.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Interment was in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery near Denison. The Rev. Richard Kapfer, President Iowa District West Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, and the Rev. Kurt Kaiser officiated at the services. Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist for the services with Henry Henningsen serving as soloist. The soloist selection was Nearer My God To Thee. The congregational hymns included Drawn To The Cross, and For All The Saints who From Their Labors Rest. Serving as honorary pallbearers for the services were Bryce Tucker, Albert Ordal, Ralph Marten, Martin Runge, Henry Olderog, and Walter Kruthoff. Serving as pallbearers for the services were Ray Frank, Joel Maupin, John Hogan, Dennis Schmidt, Donald Waderich, and Melvin Osterlund.

Catharina Marna (Gosch) Hoist (1900 - 1990)

Catharina Marna (Tena) Hoist, the daughter of Heinrich and Emma Pahl Gosch was born Sept. 16, 1900 in Ellingstadt, Germany, and died on Jan. 9, 1990 at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Ia., at the age of 89 years.

Tena was baptized and later confirmed in the Evangelical Free Church in Ellingstadt, Germany. She came to the United States as a young girl and in 1921, was united in marriage to Herman Hoist. To this union one son was born. He died in infancy.

Tena was a member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig; the Women's Guild and the Dorcas Society. She made her home in Schleswig until entering Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison in 1983.

Preceding her in death were: her parents; her husband, Herman; her infant son; brothers and sisters.

Surviving her are: one sister, Margaretha Brumm of Germany; two sisters-in-law; Gretchen Gosch of Nebraska City, Neb., and Anna Gosch of Eventide Lutheran Home. Also surviving are nieces an nephews.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., Friday, at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. Rev. Harold E. Schaible officiated at the services with interment in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. Mrs. Dorothy Jessen was organist. The congregational hymns were "What a Friend we have in Jesus" and "Just As I am Without One Plea". Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig, Iowa.

Catharine (Timmsen) Jensen (1906 - 1999)

Catharine Jensen was born June 11, 1906, the daughter of Henry and Christine Carstensen Timmsen. She died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa, on Sunday, July 11, 1999 at the age of ninety-three.

Catharine was born in Langstedt, Germany and as a young lady, she immigrated to the United States settling in Clinton County.

On September 28, 1927, she was united in marriage to William Jensen at the Friedens Evangelical Manse in Schleswig. The couple made their home in the Schleswig area, where Catharine lived until just recently moving to the Denison Care Center.

She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. Her family was very important to her and attending family events were a highlight of her life. She was very interested in other people and introduced herself to one and all as "Gramma Jensen". Catharine had a heart of gold and was very giving of her time, garden produce and baked goods. She believed in and stressed to her family the need to study hard, work hard and do your best at whatever you do. Catharine loved gardening, quilting and was well-known for her cookies, German chocolate cake and rye bread. In her leisure time, she enjoyed fishing and sewing.

Catharine was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, William and daughter, Gladys Hedstrom, both in 1965.

Survivors include one son-in-law, Gerald Hedstrom and his wife, Shirley of Ida Grove; three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, Glenda Larsen and her husband, Irvin and their children, Ann, Eric and Amy of Waukee, Iowa; Gail Lacey and her husband, Douglas and their children, Benjamin, Jennifer and Jill of Hinton; Glee Crippin and her husband, David, and their sons, Alexander and Nicholas of Storm Lake; one sister-in-law, Adela Jensen of Schleswig; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., Thursday, July 15, 1999 at the United Church of Christ, Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Gordon Hoyt officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Organist, Dorothy Jessen provided the service music and accompaniment for congregational hymn "Rock of Ages". Gail Lacey provided the piano accompaniment for Glenda Larsen and Glee Crippin singing "Day by Day" and Jenny Lacey provided the piano accompaniment for Gail and Doug Lacey singing "The Lord is My Shepherd". Those serving as pallbearers were: David Crippin, Doug Lacey, Nick Crippin, Alex Crippin, Irv Larsen, Ben Lacey and Eric Larsen.

Catherine M. (Claussen) Knop (1905 - 1988)

Catherine M. Knop was born on a farm in Soldier Township, Crawford County, Ia., Feb. 6, 1905, the daughter of Hinrich and Marie Peterson Claussen. She was baptized June 30, 1907, at Soldier Township Lutheran Church by the Rev. Hansen and confirmed at home, Nov. 6, 1923, by the Rev. C. Runge.

In 1910, Catherine moved with her parents to Ricketts and received her education in the rural and Ricketts schools. Following her schooling she was employed as an operator for the Ricketts Telephone Co. for several years.

On Dec. 29, 1926, Catherine was united in marriage with Paul Knop at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Charter Oak. They made their home on a farm near Battle Creek several years before returning to the Ricketts area where they operated a trucking business for twelve years and a cornshelling business for six years.

In 1956, they moved to Sunland, Calif., to make their home where they managed a motel and mobile home parks in Paramount and Westminster. In 1970, they retired and moved to Rancho Huntington Mobile Park in Huntington Beach, Calif., where Paul died Feb. 1, 1971. In June of 1980, Catherine returned to Iowa and made her home in the Senior Citizen's Apartments in Charter Oak.

Catherine died early Sunday morning, Jan. 3, 1988, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison. after suffering an apparent heart attack at her home. She was a member of the St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Ricketts, where, in earlier years she was a member of the Ladies Aid and was church custodian for a time.

Including her parents and husband, Catherine was preceded in death by seven brothers and eight sisters.

She is survived by her two sons and their wives, Earl and Helen Knop of Murdock, Neb., and Richard and Evelyn Knop of Ricketts; six grandchildren, three great grandchildren; one brother, Ben Carstensen and his wife, Marie of Ricketts; one sister, Emma Muhs of Hartley; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Schultz of Schleswig, and Dorothy Claussen of Sun City, Calif. Also surviving are nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 5, 1988, at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Ricketts, with Vicar Robert D. Hines officiating. Music for the service included the congregation siging "What A Friend We Have in Jesus," "The Lord's My Shepherd, I'll Mot Want" and "Lift High The Cross," with Marlene Hight serving as organist. Pallbearers were Kenneth Dorale, Loren Lee, Edwin Rusch, Julius Knop, Lorenz Schultz and Darold Lee. Interment was in the Morgan Township Cemetery at Schleswig. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Daniel Reinhoid Henkel (1903 - 1984)

Daniel Reinhoid Henkel was born on March 16, 1903 in Wynne, Ark., the son of Herman and Augusta Borkeherke Henkel. He died June 2, 1984, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa at the age of 81.

Daniel moved with his family at an early age to Burne, Iowa. He attended rural schools as well as St. John's Lutheran School in Charter Oak. He was baptized as an infant and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith at St. John's in Charter Oak.

On June 25, 1939, Daniel was united in marriage to Dorothea Hargens at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison Together they made their home on a farm in the area of Dow City. After their retirement in 1976, they moved to Ricketts. Mrs. Henkel died in 1979. Since that time, Daniel has continued to make his home in Ricketts where he was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church.

In addition to his parents and his wife, Daniel was preceded in death by two brothers, Bernard and Robert and three sisters, Frieda, Amanda and Amelia.

Survivors include, his three sons, Dale Henkel of Denison, Glen Henkel of Council Bluffs and Shirlee Henkel of Denver, Colo. Also surviving are three granddaughters and two sisters, Minnie Hamaker of Denison and Laura Hargens of Carroll.

Funeral services were held June 6, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Lukes Lutheran Church in Ricketts. Burial was in St. Clair Cemetery at Ute. The Rev. L.C. Gebhardt officiated at the services. Mrs. Loren Lee served as organist with Henry Henningsen as soloist. Hymns included, How Great Thou Art and Have Thine Own Way Lord. Pallbearers were Vernon Jepsen, Roger Henkel, John Hargens, Dean Hargens, Louie Hargens, Jr., and Richard Knop. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Dora Wilhelmine (Kuehl) Korner (1904 - 1972)

Funeral services for Mrs. Harry Korner were held Monday, November 27, 1972, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig with the Rev. F. A. Wiese officiating. Mrs. Ray Schmidt was the organist. The congregation sang "I'm But a Stranger Here" and the choir sang "There is an Hour of Peaceful Rest".

Dora Wilhelmine, the daughter of William Kuehl and Wilhelmine nee Wiedemann, was born on October 15, 1904, in Morgan Township. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church. She grew up in this community, attending the local schools.

She was joined in marriage to Harry Korner the 29th of October, 1924, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig. The couple farmed in the Schleswig community until 1956. They then moved to Mapleton, where they lived for 13 years. They moved back to Schleswig in 1969. Mrs. Korner's health had been failing the past year, and she died on Saturday, November 25, 1972, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital. She attained to 68 years, 1 month and 10 days. She was a life-long member of the Lutheran Church.

She is survived by her husband, Harry; two children, Willie of Odebolt and Wilhelmine, wife of Edward Edsen of Ida Grove; seven grandchildren and one greatgrandchild; three brothers Hans and Art of Schleswig and Julius of Sioux City; one sister, Belva Partridge of Marion, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by one brother William, who was killed, in the Normandy invasion in July 1944.

Pallbearers were: Leon Edsen, Dale Edsen, Lynn Blume, Jim Spotts, Dennis Gierstorf and Dale Petersen. Interment was in Morgan Cemetery.

Dora L. (Backhause) Wiebers (1900 - 1991)

Dora L. Wiebers was born on Feb. 20, 1900, the daughter of Otto and Annie Libler Backhause. She died on Dec. 8, 1991 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison at the age of 91 years. Dora was brought up on the farm near Schleswig and received her education in the Grant Lutheran School.

As a young girl, she helped her family on the farm until she was united in marriage to Otto Wiebers on Feb. 19, 1919. The couple settled on a farm near Deloit, Iowa and were blessed with the birth of three sons. They farmed, near Deloit for fifteen years before moving to the Schleswig area to farm. In 1950, the couple retired and moved to Schleswig.

Caring for her family was her principal concern. She was a devoted wife and loving mother who earnestly provided her family with love and affection.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Otto in 1966, one son Ernest in 1977, six brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include: her sons Robert and his wife Dorothy of Charter Oak, Donald and his wife Elaine of Sac City; eight grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren. Also surviving is her daughter in-law, Levina Wiebers of Schleswig and one sister Clara Jensen of Eventide.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11, 1991 at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. The Rev. James Schatz officiated the service and graveside rites held at the Morgan Cemetary in Schleswig. Evelyn Johnson provided the organ accompaniment for soloist Rubie Kastner singing "Heaven Is My Home" and "Take My Home and Lead Me." Pallbearers were Curtis Wiebers, Larry Wiebers, Allen Wiebers, Dale Wiebers, Gary Wiebers, Rick Wiebers and Ron Wiebers. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Walter A. Huebner and Sons' Funeral Home of Schlewsig.

Doretta Sarah Agusta (Lafrentz) Wellendorf (1908 - 1996)

Doretta Sarah Agusta Lafrentz Wellendorf was born February 16, 1908, the daughter of Christian D. and Anna Marie Lenz Lafrentz. She died at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison on Sunday, June 2, 1996 at the age of eighty-eight.

Doretta was born in Schleswig, Iowa, receiving her education at the Schleswig Public School, graduating with the class of 1927. She was baptized in Christ by Pastor Frese and confirmed in 1921 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig by Pastor Firnhaber.

On November 24, 1927, Doretta was united in marriage to Harry Wellendorf at the Immanuel Lutheran Parsonage. The couple settled on a farm five miles south of Schleswig and were blessed with the birth of one daughter. In December of 1946, the couple retired from farming and moved to Schleswig where Doretta was involved in the design and planning of the home that they occupied for the next forty-four years.

Doretta enjoyed decorating her home and delighted in many kinds of hand work, especially crocheting fashions for small dolls. She was an avid photographer and compiled extensive family photo albums, as well as scrap books about community, church and school affairs. Additionally, Doretta enjoyed playing cards with friends in the community and traveling with her husband.

Doretta was a life long member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. Her devotion to her Lord was evidenced by her volunteer efforts at Immanuel where she was a member of the Ladies Aid for sixty-seven years, taught Sunday School and served on Immanuel's Cradle Roll for 25 years. In January of 1992, she and her husband, Harry moved to the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison.

Doretta was preceded in death by one infant sister, Vernid, her parents; her husband, Harry, in 1992; one sister-in-law, Helen Kastner, three brothers-in-law, William, Albert and Edwin Wellendorf, two stepbrothers-in-law, Marvin and Walter Wellendorf, and one stepsister-in-law, Rose Jurgensen.

She is survived by her daughter, Dorothy Enslen of Dyer, Indiana; one grandson, Bradford Enslen of Merrillville, Indiana; one sister-in-law, Bernice Wellendorf of Ames, Iowa; and one stepbrother-in-law, Harvey Wellendorf and his wife, Ruth of Schleswig.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 5, 1996 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Patrick Sparling officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Henry Henningsen singing "How Great Thou Art" and "Amazing Grace" and congregational singing "Just as I Am, Without One Plea" and "I Know that My Redeemer Lives." Pallbearers were: Harlan Wellendorf; Brian Wellendorf, James Wellendorf, Larry Wellendorf, Dale Wellendorf and Bill Wellendorf. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of arrangements.

Earl Adolph Schelldorf (1905 - 1981)

Earl Adolph Schelldorf, son of Adolph and Bertha (Gehlsen) Schelldorf, was born on July 2, 1905 in Westside in Crawford County, Iowa. His early years were spent in Westside, Kiron, Schleswig and Holstein. He received his education in rural schools in Crawford County.

He was united in marriage to Ella Cathrina Wellendorf at Schleswig, Iowa, on April 11, 1943 and they became the parents of one daughter.

Mr. Schelldorf worked as a farm laborer in the Westside, Kiron and Schleswig areas. He spent some 3 years in the army from 1942 to 1945. Following this he was employed at the Holstein Elevator. Then Earl for several years owned and operated Schelly's Cafe and Motel in Schleswig. Mr. Schelldorf also drove a school bus for the Schleswig Community School and was caretaker for Morgan Cemetery at Schleswig before moving to Holstein in 1977 for retirement.

Earl enjoyed fishing, playing cards, bowling and gardening. He was a member of the Holstein United Methodist Church, United Methodist Men, American Legion and the Senior Citizens Club - and was Commander of the Schleswig American Legion, Sec'y of the Senior Citizens Bowling Team in Schleswig, and at one time was a member of the Finance Committee of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig.

He died on Tuesday, May 19, 1981 at Des Moines. Mr. Schelldorf was preceded in death by his parents, Adolph and Bertha Schelldorf and is survived by his wife, Ella; daughter, Donna Marie Baker; son-in-law, Thomas E. Baker and granddaughter, Ann Marie Baker of Holstein; step mother, Ida Mae Clevenger of Carter Lake, Omaha, Nebraska, twin sisters, Mrs. Clarence (Vera) Kracht of Coon Rapids; Mrs. Victor (Velma) Kracht of Coronado, California; a sister Mrs. Earling (Evelyn) Kracht of Hornet, California; two half-sisters, Mrs. Warren (Kathryn) Slick of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and Mrs. Joseph (Dorothy) Huegerich of Carter Lake, Iowa.

Funeral services were held Saturday May 23, 1981, at the United Methodist Church in Holstein. The Rev. Charles Henry officiated. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery Schleswig.

Earl Defoy Ransom (1908 - 1990)

Earl Defoy Ransom, the son of Clarence and Elizabeth Bowen Ransom, was born July 23, 1908, at Denison. He died June 10, 1990, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison at the age of 81 years, 10 months and 18 days.

Earl was a graduate of the Dow City High School, and was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith in 1938, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison where he has maintained his membership.

June 16, 1935, Earl and Sophia M. Thomsen were united in marriage, and their union was blessed with a son, Edward, Lee and a daughter, Jolene who died in infancy. Earl and Sophia farmed in the Denison area and he was also a auctioneer. After moving to Denison he continued his auctioneer career. He entered the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Dec. 26, 1989.

Preceding him in death were his parents; infant daughter, Jolene; two brothers, George and William.

Survivors include his wife, Sophia of Denison; his son, Edward Ransom and his wife, Carol of Walnut; one granddaughter, Debbie and her husband, Kevin Brix of Walnut; one great grandson, Trey Brix; one sister, Vera and her husband, William Jentzen of Westside; brothers, Clarence Ransom and his wife, Betty of Manning and Denison, and Kenneth Ransom and his wife Beulah of Denison; sisters-in-law, Lucille Ransom and Arlyce Ransom; half sisters and half brothers.

Funeral services were held at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Wednesday at 2 p.m. Pastor Kurt Kaiser officiated at the services with interment in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Denison. Mrs. Karen Kahl was organist and Henry Henningsen, soloist. Solo selections were "The, Lord's Prayer" and "How Great Thou Art." The congregational hymn was "I'm But a Stranger, Here." Serving as pallbearers were Alvin Beck, Joe Griffin, Chuck Martin, Loren North, Ray Pollock and Robert Schraeder.

Earl Lloyd Hennings (1909 - 1999)

Earl Lloyd Hennings was born August 12, 1909, the son of Peter Chris and Jesse Mabel Eyer Hennings. He died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa, Sunday, March 28, 1999 at the age of eighty-nine.

Earl was born in Soldier Township, Crawford County, Iowa. He was baptized in Christ on September 11, 1910 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Soldier Township, Charter Oak, Iowa and was later confirmed at the St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak. Earl received his education in a rural school near his home.

On October 23, 1935, Earl was united in marriage to Mabel Jurgensen at the St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak. The couple made their home north of Charter Oak in Soldier Township. Earl owned and operated a trucking business for three years, before farming at various locations. In 1960, they moved to Denison, where Earl was employed by IBP until retiring in 1975. After his retirement, Earl worked for Crawford County for three years in the summer, mowing and helping area farmers.

Earl was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Denison, where he served as President, Elder and made coffee for the Sunday Morning Bible Class for 17 years. He was a member of the Lutheran Laymen's League since 1938, where he served as President. Earl also served as treasurer and board member of the Denison Zone Lutheran Laymen's League, and Iowa District West Lutheran Laymen's League. He served on the St. John's Lutheran School Board and was a member of the Silver Spurs Saddle Club and President of the Senior Center.

He was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather; who always had a friendly smile on his face; always had time to talk and to lend a helping hand wherever he was needed. He enjoyed dartball, bird watching and baseball. In his leisure time, Earl loved fishing and going to auctions. Whenever you saw Mabel you would see Earl, always helping each other.

Earl was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Arthur, Chris Jr. and Virgil, one sister, Mae and one daughter-in-law, Judy Hennings.

He leaves to mourn, his wife of 63 years, Mabel; three sons, Valgene Hennings and his wife, Maedelle of Denison; Verdeen Hennings and his wife, Georgia of Charter Oak; Verle Hennings and his wife, Charlotte of Otley, Iowa; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Edna Johannsen of Charter Oak; many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., Wednesday March 31, 1999 at the Zion Lutheran Church, Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. Daniel Gifford officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "What a Friend We Have in Jesus", "Just as I Am, Without One Plea" and "I Know that My Redeemer Lives". Honorary pallbearers were Earl A. Hennings, Bruce Hennings, Brent Hennings, Kelly Hennings and Jeri Laubscher. Pallbearers were: Donald Petersen, Arlen Hennings, Milford Nemitz, Bob Schraeder, Clayton Meyer and Jim Beymer. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Earnest Carl Wilhelm Jr. Miller (1901 - 1990)

Earnest Carl Wilhelm Miller, Jr., was born Feb. 18, 1901, the son of Earnest and Mary Volbrecht Miller, and died May 1, 1990, at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison at the age of 89 years.

Earnest was born on a farm in Howard County near Riceville, la., where he was baptized a Christian in St. Peter's Lutheran Church. He lived with his parents as a child, and received his education in a rural school near his home.

As a young man, he moved to Crawford County where he continued working on the family farm. While in Crawford County, he was confirmed in the Lutheran Faith by the Reverend William Frese on April 13, 1919, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.

Earnest continued to farm on the family farm until December 20, 1922, when he was united in marriage to Minnie Kahl. They made their home on Minnie's family farm where Earnest continued his farming career until 1966 when they retired. While on the farm, the Lord blessed their lives with the birth of one daughter, Mary. In 1972, Earnest and Minnie moved to Denison where they lived at the time of Minnie's death. Earnest remained living there until moving to Eventide Lutheran Home in August, 1982.

Preceding Earnest in death were his parents; his wife, Minnie; three brothers, Harry, Julius and Walter; and one sister, Milda Bandow.

Survivors are his daughter, Mary and her husband, Gerald Hulsebus of Denison; four grandchildren: Jerry Hulsebus of Denison, Janet Miller of Norfolk, Neb., Terry Hulsebus of Harlan, and Ernie Hulsebus of Denison; six great- grandchildren: Mary Jo and David Miller, and Jennifer, Sherry, Joey and Shelly Hulsebus; one sister, Selma and her husband, George Wright of Phoenix, Ariz.; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Mamie Miller of Alta Vista, Ia., and Mrs. Hattie Kahl of Denison.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison with Pastor Kurt Kaiser officiating. Interment was in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Mrs. Karen Kahl was organist and the congregational hymns were "Just As I Am, Without One Plea," "I'm But a Stranger Here" and "I Know That My Redeemer Lives." Serving as pallbearers were Roy Dethmann, Wernes Dethmann, Arden Amman, Edward Wigg, Fred Strissel and William L. Mullenger. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Walter A. Huebner & Sons' Funeral Service in Denison.

Dorothy Edith Marie (Knop) Schultz (1908 - 2000)

Dorothy Edith Marie Schultz was born December 5, 1908, the daughter of Julius and Rosa Detmers Knop. She died Thursday, August 10, 2000 at the Eventide Nursing Home in Denison, Iowa at the age of ninety-one.

Dorothy was born in O'Neill, Nebraska and was baptized in Christ at the Lutheran Church in O'Neill. She was confirmed on May 6, 1923 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Soldier Township, Charter Oak by Rev. O. Lossner and received her education at the Immanuel Lutheran School, Soldier Township.

On May 19,1929, Dorothy was united in marriage to Leonard F. Schultz at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Soldier Township. The couple made their home on the Schultz family farm near Schleswig until moving to town in 1954.

Dorothy was a devoted member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig and their Ladies Aid, where she served as president for two years. She also served as past president of the St. Paul's Ladies Aid in Hanover Township. She was a very loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother who was devoted to her family. Dorothy enjoyed needlework and in her leisure time, she enjoyed fishing, bingo and socializing in cards. In her younger years, she was very active and enjoyed bowling.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son, Milford, three brothers Fred, Arthur and Paul Knop and one sister, Marie Ullerich.

Survivors include two sons, Lorenz Schultz and his wife, Joydine of Schleswig; Roger Schultz and his wife, Maria of Sioux City; one daughter, Jolene Sievers and her husband, Harlow of Branson, Missouri; one daughter-in-law, Delores Schultz of Charter Oak; ten grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m.. Saturday, August, 12, 2000 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Merle Mahnken officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "Asleep in Jesus", "The Lord's My Shepherd" and "I'm But a Stranger Here". Those serving as pallbearers were: Rhonda Puls, Sherry Hornung, Randall Schultz, Bradley Schultz, Royce Schultz, Kelly Pruneau, Sheila Schultz, Rebecca Unzicker, Zachary Schultz and Jordan Schultz. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of arrangements.

Ernest Keesling (1900 - 1997)

Ernest Keesling was born September 18, 1900, the son of William and Alice Rader Keesling. He died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison at the age of ninety-seven.

Ernest was born on a farm in Webster County, near Niangua, Missouri. His early years were spent in a one room log cabin shared by his parents and four other brothers and sisters. At the age of four, he moved with his family to a new home that had two rooms. He received his education in a rural public school near his home and later attended the Lutheran Parochial School, which was started by his maternal grandfather, the Rev. Rader Ernest was confirmed on March 28, 1915 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Rader, Missouri by Rev. Roger.

His father originally farmed a sixty-acre farm and later purchased an adjacent sixty acres to add to the farming business. In his youth, Ernest helped the family on the farm and later worked also at the local tomato canning factory. Additionally, he was employed by the saw mill at Morgan, Missouri where he learned to saw trees and make ax handles.

In 1920, Ernest moved to Crawford County and was employed by the Newcom farms in Stockholm Township. Additionally, he worked for Dan Fink on a daily basis and for other farms in the region as needed. He was also employed by the railroad and helped build Armours Creamery in Denison.

On November 21, 1921, Ernest was united in marriage to Edna Mae Judy at the Methodist Parsonage in Deloit, Iowa. The couple were blessed with seven children. In the spring of 1922, the couple settled on the Lingle farm and a year later, they moved to the Marion Hutchinson farm, where they lived for four years. The family subsequently lived with his wife's parents and then in 1930, they returned to the Hutchinson farm to live, until 1943, when they moved to the Judy farm.

After the death of his wife in 1978, Ernest remained on the farm until 1992 when ill health forced him to move to the Colonial Manor nursing home in Odebolt. On September 3, 1993, he moved to Eventide.

Ernest was a loving husband and father who worked diligently all his life to provide for his family. He was a charter member of Faith Lutheran Church in Deloit, served as church treasurer, elder and Sunday School Superintendent. Ernest was privileged and honored to have shoveled the first earth on the new addition to the Faith Lutheran Church in Deloit.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, four sisters, his wife, Edna, in 1978, one daughter, Alice and one granddaughter.

Survivors include three sons, Earl and his wife, Margaret of Denison; Ervin of Springfield, Missouri; Wayne and his wife, Pearl of Shenandoah, Iowa; three daughters, Cleo Peters and her husband, Edward of Denison; Ema Mae Aldag and her husband, Kenneth of Deloit; and Frances Rameden and her husband, David of Sioux City, Iowa; twenty grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren; ten great great-grand-children; and one sister, Freda Smith of Springfield, Missouri.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, December 16, 1997 at the Faith Lutheran Church, Deloit, Iowa. Rev. Hilmer Hafner and Rev. Merle Mahnken officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Denison, Iowa. Mary Ellen Haffier provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "What a Friend We have in Jesus", "Nearer, My God, to Thee', "I'm But a Stranger Here" and "Crown Him with Many Crowns". Pallbearers were: Stephen Keesling, Douglas Peters, Loren Keesling, Kevin Keesling, Gary Keesling, Keith Keesling, Mark Keesling, Tom Keesling, Lee Keesling, Roger Peters, Gene Aldag and Glen Aldag. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.
